Fabian Staudenmann starts the federal year as one of the big favorites for the title of king. A somewhat different look back and ahead with the best wrestler of the last two years. Fabian Staudenmann won the final round classification in both 2023 and 2024, making him de facto the best wrestler of the past two years. It goes without saying that he is one of the firm favorites for the Swiss National Championships in Mollis at the end of August. Ahead of the wreath festival season, which begins on Sunday, the 25-year-old from Bern looks back on his career to date with the Keystone-SDA news agency and looks ahead to the highlight of the season. July 18, 2021, Zollikofen: A powerful short move by Staudenmann throws King Kilian Wenger off balance and backwards. The man from the Central Plateau doesn't miss this opportunity and puts the 2010 king in the sawdust. The few spectators witness a historic moment. The victory in the final round of the Mittelländischer in Zollikofen is the first wreath victory for the then 21-year-old Fabian Staudenmann. "I was very nervous before the final round," says Staudenmann. "And all the more relieved afterwards. To have achieved my first wreath victory at my home festival of all places fills me with pride." September 25, 2021, Kilchberg: The highlight of the season seems to be over after the morning. Staudenmann had to settle for a share of the points twice in the morning. In the second half of the competition, however, the athlete from Berne blows to catch up, earns the maximum score three times and is finally proclaimed co-winner of the Kilchberg competition alongside Samuel Giger and Damian Ott from Eastern Switzerland. "I let my anger out in the dressing room at lunchtime and realized that I definitely had nothing left to lose. In the afternoon I was a bit frustrated, but swung very freely. In the end, I no longer even sensed the slightest chance of being able to swing for victory again. I was correspondingly overwhelmed when I realized, at least to some extent, what I had achieved." August 26/27, 2022, Pratteln: Three years earlier in Zug, Staudenmann was not among the top contenders, but in Pratteln he was one of the firm favorites. He follows up his opening defeat against Samuel Giger with five victories. A single defeat against Wicki, who would later become king, meant he was out of the final round. In the end, 3rd place remains. "I felt very honored that I was allowed to compete in the last pairing of the first round against the favourite Samuel Giger. It was a great two days with good to very good performances from me. The only thing I wasn't completely satisfied with was the seventh course against Joel Wicki. I had the feeling that I didn't get everything out of myself." "In hindsight, I had to admit that I went into the first course a bit haphazardly. I made technical mistakes and clearly had to acknowledge that a competitor was stronger than me that day. Of course, defeats like that hurt at first. On the other hand, you can also draw motivation from it to continue training intensively and improve." "I started a bit cautiously, but then got into the festival very well. A wonderful victory that was characterized by an incredible team spirit. At this festival, we came even closer together as a Bernese team after the first course didn't go our way and got into a flow together." August 30/31, 2025, Mollis: The highlight of the season is the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival in Glarus at the end of August. If everything goes as expected, Fabian Staudenmann will be among the favourites for his third participation. "Two days and lots of wrestlers with the same goal: I want to be able to look in the mirror on Sunday evening and say that I pushed myself to the limit in each round and got the maximum out of myself at that particular moment. That alone can and will influence me." A team of architects from Basel and Belgium wins the competition and impresses with its resource-saving concept. The winning project for the new storage building for the Swiss Federal Archives SFA in Zollikofen has been chosen. The jury unanimously awarded first place to the "R2D2" project by Neume Architekten from Basel and WV Architecten from Antwerp. The Swiss Federal Archives require additional storage space. The project competition launched by the Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics FOBL set economic efficiency and functionality as well as low greenhouse gas emissions and the use of all suitable roof and façade surfaces for the production of electricity as high priorities. 23 teams took part in the open one-stage project competition. Seven projects were ranked. The winning project is characterized, among other things, by the minimal use of concrete, resource-saving materials and the use of existing structural components from the existing parking garage on site. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027. The funding will be used to promote cage-free housing for laying hens and improve their health and welfare through new breeding approaches The project, which involves genetics companies Hendrix Genetics in the Netherlands and Lohmann Breeders in Germany aims to use the latest findings from behavioural research on hens kept in cage-free housing with and without outdoor areas to incorporate them into breeding programmes for laying hens The 5-year project, known as HenTrack 2.0, will include 4 of the world’s most common high-performance hybrids, which lay particularly high numbers of eggs. Toscano, from the University of Bern’s Veterinary Public Health Institute said he wanted to find out the traits relating to the welfare and health of the laying hens to breed more robust and resistant chickens for cage-free housing The project is being carried out in an experimental barn used by the Centre for Proper Housing of Poultry and Rabbits in Zollikofen said the funding underlined the high quality of animal health and welfare research Switzerland is a world leader in animal welfare standards having been the first nation to ban battery cages in 1993 and transition entirely to cage-free housing Although chicken welfare remains a national priority problems such as keel bone fractures persist and the situation is compounded by imports of eggs from birds reared to lower welfare standards genetic selection is done almost exclusively abroad with caged hens so many of the problems that arise cannot be directly targeted The HenTrack project will monitor the behaviour health and welfare of individual laying hens during the laying period Combining behavioural patterns with indicators of animal health and welfare will allow new traits (phenotypes) to be incorporated into breeding programmes of industrial partners This will help to breed healthier and more robust laying hens for cage-free housing while maintaining their productivity The birds will be subject to state-of-the-art tracking methods with a major focus on behavioural research to develop a better understanding of poultry welfare These include a measurement system using radio frequency and mini receivers worn on the chickens’ legs This allows the assessment of relevant traits without disturbing the hens – a major advantage over current breeding programmes product manager at Hendrix Genetics and project member of HenTrack said: “The research done in Switzerland allows us to learn more on chicken behaviour and how to integrate the new traits related to hen welfare in our day-to-day breeding programmes and the preliminary studies done before gave us the confidence to continue the research collaboration and support HenTrack 2.0.” 24/12/2020 By Snow on Christmas day is fairly rare across most of Switzerland Meteo Suisse has compiled a list of snowy Christmas periods (24/25/26 December) at various locations over the 80 years to 2016 so the range is significant in Alpine Switzerland which lies just outside the city of Bern and sits at 557m has been white 1 out of 4 Christmas periods At higher altitudes the odds of a white Christmas rise significantly in Switzerland 3 in 4 Christmases were white over the 80 year period In the winter resort of Davos (1,600m) there has been only one year since 1931 when there was not snow on the ground from 24 to 26 December there was no snow on the ground on the 24th Snow only arrived on the 25th and remained on the ground on the 26th For snow lovers there is a possibility of some snow on Christmas day this year even in some lower altitude locations.
