A River Rouge factory that converts coal into coke for use in steelmaking is seeking state regulators' permission to expand its processes and its air pollution despite currently being sued by the U.S
Environmental Protection Agency for ongoing Clean Air Act violations and being cited by Michigan regulators for breaking air pollution rules as recently as November
"I think it’s a horrible idea," said state Sen
operates 85 ovens at its Zug Island facility
coal is heated in an oxygen-free atmosphere until all its volatile components evaporate
The coke is then used in steelmaking to heat iron ore and remove its oxygen content
The process leads to the release of potentially health-harming sulfur dioxide
and EES Coke Battery is one of the largest emitters of sulfur dioxide pollution in Michigan — about 3,600 tons of the pollutant into the atmosphere in 2021
EES Coke Battery is seeking to install a secondary screener and associated equipment in its factory to process coke there rather than at another site on Zug Island
The project requires a "permit to install" from the Michigan Department of Environment
Great Lakes and Energy's Air Quality Division
the project would increase emissions of particulate matter — dust — into the atmosphere by 1.6 tons per year
Finer dust particles less than 10 microns in diameter or smaller
would increase by 0.82 tons per year and 0.23 tons per year
Those are considered a significant health risk because their tiny size can bypass humans' protective respiratory hairs and mucous layers and lodge deeply into lungs
in their review of EES Coke Battery's permit request
found that the increased particulate emissions would not violate state air pollution rules or the federal National Ambient Air Quality Standards
a nonprofit group that seeks to reduce industrial emissions
that found pollution from EES Coke alone already causes more than 15,000 asthma attacks and up to 57 deaths per year
Those numbers were arrived at through modeling using data from EPA's CO-Benefits Risk Assessment (COBRA) tool and 2020 EPA NationalEmissions Inventory data
According to a 2021 study by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services
the rate of hospitalizations for asthma was at least four times greater for Detroit residents than for Michigan residents as a whole from 2016 to 2019
who’ve already endured thousands of tons of illegal toxic emissions
are being asked to accept even more pollution — while EES Coke continues trying to dodge accountability," Smigielski said

responded to the Free Press with an emailed statement:"For more than a century
DTE has been committed to protecting the environment and the health and safety of the communities where we live and serve
The pending permit is to install a secondary screener that will be operated within an enclosed building and use foam suppressant to prevent particulate from becoming airborne
The permit is unrelated to the pending litigation
EES Coke’s operation is governed by regulations aimed at protecting public health
and the plant is dedicated to responsibly operating under those regulations while it continues to serve crucial industrial and civic functions through the production of coke to fuel the steel industry and the provision of over 170 jobs."
air pollution jumpedAccording to the EPA's lawsuit
the Sierra Club and others have joined as plaintiffs
the owner of the coke oven battery in the late 1980s sought a rebuild
assuring state officials that it would not increase air pollution and thus would not require a "New Source Review" permit
tougher pollution standards and require newer
more advanced and expensive pollution control equipment
State regulators issued a permit in 1990 that included certain limits to ensure that New Source Review was not triggered
EES Coke Battery then in 2014 sought to remove limits on "underfire combustion" — the use of gases released in the coking process as on-site fuel
company officials predicted the factory's future pollution levels and told regulators that there would not be a significant emissions increase of sulfur dioxide or PM2.5
EES Coke Battery's sulfur dioxide and PM2.5 emissions have exceeded their predicted levels to state regulators by hundreds of tons a year
The increased pollution means the changes should have been considered a major modification and fallen under stricter permitting standards
EGLE's air permitting process "broken," advocate contendsEES Coke Battery's permit request to allow additional air pollution isn’t just a failure by the company and DTE
"It highlights a broken air permitting process at EGLE
which seems poised to rubber-stamp a new permit without meaningfully considering cumulative pollutant impacts and the disproportionately high health risks facing these communities," he said
"The neighborhoods surrounding EES Coke have some of the highest rates of asthma
cancer and heart disease in the state — factors that make these residents particularly vulnerable to any added pollution — and yet EGLE doesn’t consider any of this when deciding to approve or deny new permits
a Democrat whose district includes River Rouge
said his office "is monitoring these developments."
"Manufacturing remains a pillar of Michigan’s economy
providing well-paying union jobs and driving local prosperity
economic benefits cannot come at the expense of the health and safety of working families," he said
"It is critical that existing regulations are strong enough to protect the people of metro Detroit and that corporations are held accountable for complying with these critical safeguards
The well-being of our communities must always come first."
EGLE is accepting public comment on EES Coke Battery's permit request until Feb
and Geiss said her office plans to issue a comment in opposition to the plan
"Just because you can doesn’t mean you should," she said
"There is already enough industrial pollution in that area
which already suffers from increased respiratory illnesses and other comorbidities
I don’t think it makes sense to be trying to expand when there are already violations against them."

health and environmental advocates are rallying against a DTE subsidiary's proposal to add equipment at EES Coke Battery
its Zug Island factory that turns coal into metallurgical coke
Opponents of the plan say it could increase emissions in communities that already face the health and environmental impacts of pollution
"The community surrounding EES Coke is disproportionately vulnerable to the emissions that will be coming not only from this facility but (those from) the added screener," said Bryan Smigielski
Michigan campaign organizer for the Sierra Club
DTE applied to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy for a permit to install a secondary screener at EES Coke, a River Rouge factory built in 1992 that shares a site with U.S. Steel. It is owned by DTE Vantage, a subsidiary of DTE Energy, and the target of an ongoing federal Clean Air Act lawsuit
The screener will sort pieces of coke into different sizes
It would allow EES Coke to process the material on its own instead of trucking it to a contractor — Dynamic Resources Company
EES Coke's plan would increase the amount of particulate matter released at EES Coke
Particulate matter is the term for air pollutants like dust
smoke and soot that can be various sizes and cause health problems such as asthma flare-ups and heart attacks
The company said it will limit pollution by building the new screener indoors and applying foam to the material to stop it from drifting into the air
the process is done outdoors by Dynamic Resources
EES Coke "intends to stop using the contractor for the sorting of coke," EGLE spokesperson Hugh McDiarmid said in an email
and would not be allowed to process additional material
"We cannot legally stop the contractor from processing other materials currently allowed under their permit and cannot say definitively that (overall) emissions would decrease
or increase" as a result of a permit approval
Smigielski also voiced concern that the overall amount of pollution from steelmaking or other industries could increase as a result of the permit approval
"There's nothing stopping it from being used
If EES Coke was able to increase their coke production (someday)
maybe that other screener becomes useful again," he said
DTE's press office did not answer questions from The News
apparently directing the query to EES Coke
said in the statement that screening coke in-house also will reduce the emissions caused by trucking the material to Dynamic Resources
"EES Coke has complied with all regulations governing the site at the state and federal level that protect public health," he wrote
"We remain committed to responsibly operating under those regulations while our plant serves a critical function
producing coke to fuel the steel industry and supporting more than 170 jobs in the community."
State records show EGLE last wrote EES Coke a violation notice on Nov
stating the facility had repeatedly violated its permit and environmental laws in 2023 and 2024
Inspectors said the facility allowed visible emissions to release from its bypass and bleeder flares roughly 200 times in those years
EES Coke said it uses bleeder flares when there is a potential for a dangerous buildup of gas and pressure at the facility
The events are not routine and needed to protect worker safety
according to a letter environmental engineer Laura Harris wrote to EGLE staff on Dec
"EES Coke has taken measures to reduce the frequency and duration of bleeder events through system improvements and increased maintenance
but bleeding over pressurized gas will always be a crucial and necessary step to the safe operation of the facility," Harris wrote
State regulators are poised to approve the permit, they said in a factsheet released in January
which states the project would not violate state or federal pollution laws and would be subject to requirements about monitoring
Smigielski criticized EGLE for not accounting for the health issues and pollution burden faced by Zug Island neighbors in the department's permitting decisions
The area surrounding Zug Island ranks among the state's most burdened communities in EGLE's environmental justice screening tool
which accounts for things like respiratory illness
which Smigielski said shows the current regulatory system is flawed
Activists and some lawmakers from southeast Michigan have called on regulators to consider the "cumulative impacts" of pollution from different sources when determining whether to approve air quality permits
More: Michigan activists seek policies to curb pollution in industrial neighborhoods
"We have this highly overburdened community
and none of those burdens make it into the decisionmaking process for the permit," Smigielski said
"We see this as being part of the reason why EES Coke has a legacy of causing harm to these communities."
EGLE said the additional pollution released at EES Coke won't be enough to kick the surrounding area above federal standards for the amount of particulate matter allowed in the air, according to a summary of the proposed project
The portion of Wayne County around Zug Island does not meet federal air quality standards for sulfur dioxide
a pollutant that results from burning fossil fuels such as coal
petroleum and diesel and can cause health issues such as shortness of breath and asthma attacks
Steel facility is considered a "major source" of sulfur dioxide
DTE's proposed addition of a secondary screener at EES Coke would not increase sulfur dioxide emissions
sulfur dioxide remains a problem for the facility
according to a 2022 lawsuit filed by the U.S
Environmental Protection Agency against DTE and the EES Coke Battery plant
The agency alleges EES Coke violated the Clean Air Act by increasing the facility's sulfur dioxide emissions beyond allowable limits
which endangered the health of people living in River Rouge
More: Feds add DTE as defendants in Clean Air Act lawsuit against EES Coke
The Michigan chapter of the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America criticized EES Coke in a Feb
alleging the plant pollutes the surrounding air and exacerbates respiratory illnesses for neighbors
Detroit has long had higher rates of asthma than the rest of Michigan
The EES Coke facility's emissions compound the problem
the Asthma & Allergy Foundation's Michigan chapter said
It called for stricter enforcement of the facility
more robust air quality monitoring and DTE's investment in cleaner technology
"Folks have a right to breathe clean air," said Kathleen Slonager
"DTE's EES Coke facility is jeopardizing the health of our community
contributing to some of the worse asthma rates in the state and creating a cumulative burden on residents already facing environmental injustices
We cannot stand by while our families suffer."
EGLE is accepting comments about EES Coke's proposal to add a secondary screening facility through Feb

Formula Swiss AG has initiated legal proceedings against the Office for Consumer Protection of the Canton of Zug (AVS) at the Swiss Federal Supreme Court
The company is seeking a legal ruling on whether cannabidiol (CBD) products can be classified and sold as cosmetics in Switzerland and is claiming CHF 5 million in damages related to the authorities’ actions
Formula Swiss had registered its CBD products as cosmetics under the guidance of the Zug consumer protection office
following requirements including third-party lab testing
The AVS later accused the company of non-compliance and ordered the halt of product sales
Formula Swiss argues that other companies in the region have continued selling similar CBD cosmetics without facing regulatory action
The company’s CBD products remain legally classified as cosmetics in the UK and EU
The case highlights ongoing regulatory uncertainty surrounding CBD cosmetics in Switzerland
particularly in relation to how local enforcement compares with broader European standards
The outcome could clarify the legal treatment of CBD in Swiss personal care products and influence how such products are regulated in the future

the financial landscape is being reshuffled - including in Australia
Zug-based wealth manager Tramondo also sees opportunities in this market
Australia – a dream destination for many holidaymakers
but also a lucrative market for asset managers
Down Under is one of the regions in the Asia-Pacific region with the highest proportion of millionaires
It is estimated that €1.87 trillion will change hands over the next two decades.
Competition in the Australian asset management industry is fierce
Morgan Stanley and HSBC are increasingly vying for the attention of Australia's wealthiest families
the number of Australian family offices is growing
Swiss financial institutions have also tried their luck in Australia
UBS made two attempts before finally withdrawing in 2015
serving as the undisputed market leader among Swiss banks in the Australian market
the business was transferred to its former competitor
UBS aims to perform better and has expanded its services to include family offices and wealthy women
Another Swiss player, Tramondo
The Zug-based wealth advisor seized the opportunity and secured the services of Christian Wolperth in December 2023
As a Senior Relationship Manager in Wealth Management at Credit Suisse
he looked after the Australian market for 16 years
he found a new platform for looking after Australian clients
which also includes the Mulit-Family office Dr
Tramondo pursues a strategy of tailor-made solutions
this is a decisive advantage: «Many institutions overlook this,» he says
Tramondo does not engage in active acquisition
«Our customers come to us through recommendations
This organic growth has created a strong dynamic that further strengthens our success,» he says
a key advantage of this network is the presence of Dr
which relies heavily on personal relationships
as Swiss financial service providers enjoy a strong reputation in Australia
Many of Wolperth's clients have maintained accounts with Credit Suisse for 40 to 50 years
«A trustworthy and flexible partner is important to our clients – someone who offers continuity and independence
unaffected by the strategic uncertainties of individual banks,» says Wolperth
«Switzerland's security features and political stability are repeatedly cited as key factors.»
He adds that the strength of the Swiss franc further enhances this advantage
especially as political uncertainties in Australia and increasing geopolitical tensions with China are prompting investors to seek even more diversification

Switzerland has made headlines for many years
Donald Trump will move into the White House for the second term
the Crypto Valley will be closely monitoring the US President’s policies
Trump's plans could cause a major upheaval in Switzerland
In addition to introducing massive tariffs and tightening immigration policies
Trump has also announced his intention to overhaul the previously restrictive policy on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies
aiming to implement crypto-friendly regulations
US Plans to Hold a National Bitcoin Reserve
Trump wants to attract mining companies: «Bitcoin made in the USA»
This will involve massively expanding the energy-producing economy to ensure that enough cheap energy is available at all times
Trump aims to promote stablecoins and bitcoins and establish a strategic national Bitcoin reserve
Trump’s promises have sparked a surge in cryptocurrency prices in recent months
Bitcoin’s price briefly surpassed the magical threshold of $100,000
«If the US President delivers on his promises
This would not go unnoticed in Crypto Valley»
says a senior manager at a crypto company based in Zug
Cryptocurrencies and Switzerland have long been a success story
Switzerland set up attractive conditions for the industry
The region came to be known as Crypto Valley
But the honeymoon is over. A sense of unease is spreading within the industry. Bitcoin pioneer Niklas Nikolajsen
a Danish national who moved to Switzerland in 2011 and now lives in Zug
recently told the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) that Switzerland is no longer an attractive location for crypto businesses
even a Federal Councilor visited the offices of crypto companies
the Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) even granted two crypto companies a banking license
One point of contention is the treatment of stablecoins
which are crypto-assets pegged to a currency like the dollar
FINMA now requires that all parties involved in stablecoin transactions be identified and has set concrete requirements for stablecoin issuers and the banks that provide backup guarantees
This has caused an outcry within crypto companies
If conditions for the crypto industry are relaxed under Trump while tightening in Switzerland
many companies are likely to leave the country
but if Switzerland doesn't take action soon
One such move could be for the Swiss National Bank to be mandated to invest in Bitcoin
«If Switzerland only offers what everyone else does
The Swiss market simply doesn’t offer enough»

The canton of Zug recently tightened its citizenship laws
the rules for applying to become Swiss in the canton are more strict
In the months before these changes came into force
The requirements for becoming Swiss have federal
This means that citizenship is easier to obtain in some parts of Switzerland than in others
The canton of Zug has raised the citizenship bar in three areas
applicants had to have not received welfare payments for a full 3 years before applying
which is the level most high school children achieve in second languages upon school graduation at around 18
The minimum level of written German has also been increased
minors can only apply as part of a family application until they reach 16
It is too soon to know how much impact the new rules will have
it is clear that many wannabe Swiss in the canton were not keen to take any chances
a figure that will rise further when the number for December is added – it has not yet been released
The rule tightening was implemented quickly
The canton’s parliament voted on it during the summer of 2024 based on a motion put forward earlier by the Swiss People’s Party (UDC/SVP)
By 1 January 2025 the changes were in force

As many residents of the other 25 Swiss cantons struggle to keep up with the steadily rising health insurance rates — 6 percent on average in 2025
after substantial hikes in previous years as well — Zug’s population will see their premiums… drop by a staggering 18 percent
The wealthy canton can afford to be generous: its coffers overflow with money
the canton will use its surpluses to cover 99 percent of hospital costs for its approximately 130,000 residents
This is a really generous gesture because in other cantons this coverage amounts to 55 percent of costs
As Zug’s health insurance companies won't have to cover hospital costs
they will have fewer out-of-pocket expenses
which means premiums will fall by 18 percent — about 700 francs per person in 2026 and 2027
Zug residents will not only benefit from lower health insurance costs
but are already taking advantage of the lowest tax rate in the country
“a married couple with two children and a gross annual income of 125,000 francs will pay 15,447 francs per year in taxes in Neuchâtel

Only one: scarcity of affordable housing
Zug is a victim of its own success: because of its low taxes
it has become an in-demand place to live for individuals
and an attractive location for company headquarters as well
As the potential for building new apartments in and around the canton’s 11 municipalities is being exhausted
it has become increasingly more difficult to find reasonably- priced rental housing

The estimated 130,000 residents of Zug are among the luckiest people in Switzerland
Not only are their tax rates lowest in the country
but their health insurance will also cost — at least temporarily — less than elsewhere
That is because their government has decided to use surpluses in their public coffers to significantly reduce health insurance premiums paid by the local population
“In recent years, Zug's public finances have developed very favourably,” the canton announced on July 11th. “Part of the surplus generated will flow directly back to the population."
The aim is for the canton to cover “almost all of the costs” — 99 percent— of inpatient hospital treatment for Zug patients in 2026 and 2027
“This will mean that the 2026/2027 premiums for compulsory health insurance in the canton will be around 18 percent lower on average."
The Health Insurance Act stipulates that the cantons cover at least 55 percent of residents’ hospital bills
Almost all the cantons base their calculations on this minimum amount
the canton's share will be increased to 99 percent for two years
The remaining 1 percent will be paid for by health insurers

“If the canton covers 99 percent of the costs for inpatient health services for two years
health insurers will have to take this into account when calculating premiums for 2026 and 2027," according to the press release
“The average premium will then be around 18 percent lower
or around 700 francs per person per year.”
with the actual reduction based on the insurance model
The details of this measure must be worked out by spring 2025
so that the premiums can be reduced accordingly for 2026/2027
when the cantonal financing of hospital care will be made uniform across Switzerland
The cantonal parliament will decide whether or not to continue this policy based on the outcome
It is the only one so far to lower health insurance rates
bucking the trend seen in many states around the world
all Swiss cantons reported more or less significant budget surpluses in 2022
recorded a budget surplus of nearly 1.4 million francs and will put this money to a good use from August 2024

"We love you Canada but you need to come up with your own scenery"
BY Megan LaPierrePublished May 24
I've honestly been loving Jack White's becoming-too-online character arc. Now he's really given us a look inside the four lobes of his brain: music, politics, Snoop Dogg's cereal, and, finally, the Canada–United States border.
In his latest Instagram post, the musician has opened up about a concern that seems to be keeping him up at night, and that's the impending completion of the Gordie Howe bridge across the Detroit River. After beginning construction in 2018, the new cable-stayed bridge connecting Windsor, ON, and Detroit, MI, is expected to be completed next year.
This worries Jack White. For, you see, the view from the bridge for Canadians crossing the bridge to visit Detroit will be a stunning panorama of Zug Island — the private industrial site (and major environmental hazard) within the city of River Rouge.
"They will become jealous of our Zug Island and then attempt to build their OWN copy of it on the Canadian side of the river so as not to be outdone by us," White wrote, even going so far as to map out where Canada's imitation Zug Island would go.
He continued hypothesizing, "This 'fake' Zug Island will displace hundreds of businesses and homes and also upset local birdlife and all for what? Some petty beauty contest? We have to figure out a way for this not to happen y'all. We love you Canada but you need to come up with your own scenery."
Unfortunately for White, he's simply managed to make the inevitable happen sooner. Thanks to him, now we don't have to wait until the bridge (maybe) gets finished in 2025; we can start getting jealous of Zug Island and developing a plot to make a better, nicer version of it immediately!
