A rather intimidating video that shows a silverback gorilla strolling about on his hind legs evokes the sci-fi film Planet of the Apes
a 21-year-old silverback gorilla at Britain's Port Lympne Wild Animal Park
has startled his keepers and the internet by teaching himself to walk upright like a human
6-foot-tall Ambam strutting his stuff with purpose has quickly racked up more than 300,000 YouTube views
(Watch below.) Experts suspect the gorilla adjusted his stance in order to carry larger amounts of food and peer over his pen's walls
While other gorillas have been known to stand upright
but it's only a matter of time before the gorillas take over and we humans are overrun
"This guy is just hoping that if he keeps quiet about it for now he will get some kind of supervisory role in the new regime
Consider yourselves warned." Watch Ambam walk:

Soon, this upright walking gorilla at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent
will become a familiar sight for internet users
The zoo has posted recorded footage of Ambam
and his video has already been viewed more than 250,000 times on YouTube
His keeper, Phil Ridges, told Sky News: "His father Bitam used to display the same behaviour if he had handfuls of food to carry
and a half-sister who also sometimes stand and walk in the same way."
While all gorillas and many other primates have the ability to walk upright
"We haven't got any who do it like Ambam," Ridges said
We think he might use it to get a height advantage to look over the wall when keepers come to feed him and standing up can also help him in looking for food generally
Ambam was born at Port Lympne's sister park

showing a gorilla named Ambam walking upright
Ambam’s odd posture may be learned simply from observing and copying his keepers
but no matter the reason he can do what he does
a gorilla that walks like a human is eerie to watch
Yet at some point in our evolutionary history
our ancestors may have had a lot in common with Ambam
Walking upright happened before we developed the big brains that made us fully human — that much was made clear back in 1974 with the discovery in Ethiopia of 3.2-million-year-old Lucy (formally know as Australopithecus afarensis)
who walked on two legs but had a relatively tiny skull and long
paleo-anthropologists are convinced that two-legged walking is what eventually led to bigger brains
as opposed to things working the other way around
Exactly which of our ancestors started walking in a human rather than apelike fashion has long been a matter of debate
Based on the remarkably rich collection of bones Lucy left behind
plus some fossilized footprints from about the same period in about the same region
she has long been the best candidate for that honor
But there’s always been at least some uncertainty
because even Lucy’s skeletal remains are missing key bones — critically
which could go a long way toward settling the matter
And those bones haven’t been found among the scores of other A
afarensis found over the intervening years
(See the horniest dinosaur that ever lived in TIME’s Top 10 of Everything 2010.)
a team that includes Lucy’s original discoverer
now at the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University
is announcing they’ve found one of these bones — not from Lucy herself
one of the long bones that connects the toes to the ankles — and it very strongly suggests
that Lucy and her kin walked in a modern way
“It’s a really crucial piece of information,” says lead author Carol Ward
“It lays to rest the idea that Lucy walked with an intermediate
What makes the bone so informative is its shape
The feet of apes are more like hands — pretty much flat when splayed on a flat surface
not only from front to back but from side to side
The arching makes our feet natural shock-absorbers — crucial for animals that spend so much time with their weight on just two limbs
The stiffness lets us push off firmly to take the next step
(See if humans killed the neanderthals.)
Johanson and their co-author Bill Kimbel (also of the Institute of Human Origins) describe is clearly arched from front to back
and the bone itself is twisted on its long axis” — evidence of a side-to-side arch as well
“The bone is also very stiff and strong,” she says
The structure of the foot not only tells researchers that Lucy and her cousins walked like us
but also that they’d lost the ability to climb trees easily
since prehensile feet — those that can grasp like hands — are critical to good climbing
“was committed to life on the ground.”
That would have given our ancestor a distinct advantage over other hominids
and the lush forests of eastern Africa were changing into a mixed landscape of trees and grasslands in which tree-climbing would have been less useful than walking
afarensis also had very strong jaws and teeth
so they could eat a wider variety of foods
“The combination opened up opportunities,” says Ward
and Lucy’s species had the physical traits that let them take maximum advantage
Lucy’s role as a transitional creature between the more apelike and the more human of our ancestors hasn’t seriously been in doubt
it’s become clear that her stride belongs on the human end of that spectrum

A gorilla that was caught on camera walking like a human has become an internet hit
The animal’s keepers say Ambam’s behaviour has made him quite a celebrity
The gorilla lives at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent
Ambam was captured on camera by an animal researcher and the footage has had around 200,000 hits on YouTube
The 21-year old western lowland gorilla weighs around 220kg and stands at 6ft tall
Ambam was hand raised for a few months when he was a year old because he became very ill and as a last resort he had to be taken away from his mother Shumba
Animal Park staff say Ambam’s behaviour is not new
Gorilla keeper Phil Ridges said: “Ambam’s father Bitam used to display the same behaviour if he had handfuls of food to carry
who also sometimes stand and walk in the same way
“All gorillas can do it to some extent but we haven’t got any who do it like Ambam and he is quite a celebrity at the park
“We think he might use it to get a height advantage to look over the wall when keepers come to feed him and standing up can also help him in looking for food generally in his enclosure as it gives him a better vantage point
“Ambam can also carry a lot more food if he stands and uses both hands and walking on two feet also means he doesn’t get his hands wet when it is raining!”

apparently has decided that it's more fun to walk upright
The video shows Ambam walking around the gorilla enclosure with the song "Walk Like a Man" by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons playing in the background
Said Phil Ridges of the Port Lympne Wild Animal Park: "He walks just like us."

Wildlife charity Aspinall Foundation investigated over possible financial mismanagement
The Charity Commission has begun an investigation into potential financial mismanagement at a wildlife conservation foundation that appointed the prime minister’s partner
The voluntary sector watchdog said it had opened a statutory inquiry into the Aspinall Foundation charity
It is believed it will focus on possible trustee conflicts of interest and possible misuse of charitable resources
The timing of the inquiry will be embarrassing for Symonds
an animal lover and former Conservative party spin doctor
whose appointment to the foundation as head of communications was announced just two months ago
The charity is chaired by Damian Aspinall
and its board of trustees includes members of the prominent Goldsmith and Aspinall families
The commission opened a pre-inquiry regulatory compliance case into the charity in November with the co-operation of trustees
After identifying “further questions regarding the charity’s governance”
it has now decided to escalate its involvement to identify any possible misconduct
The commission is keen to stress that the opening of an inquiry is not a finding of wrongdoing; a statutory inquiry is its most serious form of investigation
undertaken only where it is seriously concerned that a charity is at risk of wrongdoing and abuse
Where the commission concludes serious wrongdoing has taken place it has powers to remove trustees from the board
A separate statutory inquiry has also been announced into the management of Howlett’s Wild Animal Trust
and whose trustees include Aspinall’s daughter Tansy
The charity runs Port Lympne and Howletts wildlife parks in Kent
The Aspinall Foundation’s last set of accounts (to the end of December 2019) show the 30-room Howletts mansion in Kent owned by the charity was rented to Aspinall for £2,500 a month
The foundation paid a firm called Alvarium £64,000 for accounting services in 2019
The foundation trustee Charles Filmer is a director of Alvarium
A spokesman for the foundation said: “The Aspinall Foundation remains firmly committed to its ethical and legal duties as a charitable body
Our trustees will continue to work openly and transparently with the Charity Commission to ensure best practice governance and compliance.”
The foundation is understood to have commissioned an independent internal governance review last autumn
The matters being investigated by the commission pre-date Symonds’ appointment as an employee at the foundation
and there is no suggestion she is subject to its investigation
zoo owner and friend of Lord Lucan and Sir James Goldsmith
the late financier and founder of the short-lived UK Referendum party in the mid 1990s
several months before the commission first contacted the charity with its concerns
The commission undertook 67 statutory inquiries in 2019-20, a period in which it completed two high-profile investigations into Oxfam and Save the Children
A six-year-old statutory inquiry into Kids Company has yet to make a report

Ambam shares his birthday with stars including actresses Julie Christie and Sarah Michelle Gellar
cellist Julian Lloyd Webber and actor Robert Carlyle
whose lifespan can stretch from 30 to 50 years
He was hand-raised for a few months when he was a year old after falling ill
meaning he had to be taken away from his mother Shumba
The precise number of western lowland gorillas is unclear because they inhabit some of the most dense and remote rainforests in Africa
But wildlife experts say that due to poaching and disease
their numbers have declined by more than 60% over the past 20 to 25 years

But humans are astounded by the 21-year-old Silverback ambling on his hind legs and have turned him into a YouTube celebrity in just two days
“As far back as I remember, he’s been able to do it,” Phil Ridges, a gorilla keeper at the Port Lympne Wild Animal Park just south of Dover in England tells the Star
Ambam’s dad could walk upright and two sisters can as well
but none of them are quite as good or adventurous at it as Ambam

But he’s not trained and doesn’t stand up on cue
to the chagrin of camera crews lined up Thursday to film his feat
Rather than being a notch up the evolutionary scale
Ambam is likely just a very good example of his family’s “standing-up gene,” says Ridges
something he may well pass on to his offspring

A critically-endangered silverback gorilla who walks like a man has become a big attraction at a wild animal park
Footage on YouTube of Western lowland gorilla Ambam aping humans with his walk has been viewed more than 250,000 times

Normally gorillas are used to getting around on all fours but 21-year-old male Ambam has managed to perfect his balance on his two hind legs
He has become something of a celebrity at Port Lympne wild animal park near Hythe
A park spokeswoman said: "He is not the first gorilla ever to walk like this but he seems to do it much better than others
and he can pick up quite a bit of speed once he gets going
Ambam is Port Lympne's biggest gorilla and he was born at the park's sister site
He was hand-raised for a few months when he was a year old after falling ill
meaning he had to be taken away from his mother Shumba as a last resort
Gorilla keeper Phil Ridges said his walking technique gives him certain advantages over his fellow apes at the park
He said: "We think he might use it to get a height advantage to look over the wall when keepers come to feed him and standing up can also help him in looking for food generally in his enclosure as it gives him a better vantage point
"Ambam can also carry a lot more food if he stands and uses both hands and walking on two feet also means he doesn't get his hands wet when it is raining."
