Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News
May 3 – Journalists gathered Friday in Bamenda under the banner of the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) to mark World Press Freedom Day
even as the country continues to rank among the most repressive environments for media in sub-Saharan Africa
Held under the theme “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” the event brought together reporters and editors for speeches
a panel discussion and a comedy performance at Up Station Bamenda
But the celebration stood in sharp contrast to the grim realities facing many media workers across the country
Cameroon has long been criticised for its authoritarian control of the press under President Paul Biya
The government routinely targets journalists with surveillance
was arrested and held incommunicado by military authorities
The government later admitted he had died in custody
though journalists and rights groups believe he was tortured to death
radio host Bibi Ngota died in prison while awaiting trial on charges critics say were politically motivated
His death sparked international condemnation
with watchdogs blaming poor prison conditions and the government's increasing use of pretrial detention to muzzle dissent
widely believed to have been linked to his investigative work into corruption and embezzlement by state-linked elites
"The very act of celebrating press freedom here in Bamenda is itself an act of courage," said one CAMASEJ member who requested anonymity due to fears of reprisal
Freedom House and Reporters Without Borders consistently rank Cameroon among the most hostile countries for journalists
Reporters Without Borders placed Cameroon 138th out of 180
citing a climate of fear and state censorship
As conversations in Bamenda turn toward the implications of artificial intelligence for journalism
many reporters say they are still fighting for the basics — the right to report freely
“There’s no real AI revolution for us yet,” said a local editor
The eight-year conflict between the country’s French- and English-speaking populations has its roots in the colonial past and modern injustice
a separatist fighter shot by government troops in Bamenda in 2022
“I didn’t want him to join the struggle but separatist fighters threatened to kill him and his entire family if he didn’t join,” Ngum says
apologising and saying he joined the struggle for our sake
and would get up in the night shouting ‘Daddy
Afuh joined the army of Cameroon’s francophone president
to quash the secessionist revolt in English-speaking areas
“I felt like my world collapsed around me when my husband died,” says Kum
“I could barely recognise his legs in the coffin – the rest of his body had been shattered
Life is meaningless without him,” she says
Kum feels her husband died for a “just cause”
although she struggles financially to care for their four children
an anglophone separatist movement emerged calling for the independence of the region they called “Ambazonia”
Demonstrators from the English-speaking parts of Cameroon protest in Bamenda against discrimination in favour of the country’s francophone majority
The war has left more than 6,000 people dead and at least a million displaced internally, while more than 80,000 have fled to neighbouring Nigeria. Children have been deprived of school and the economy is in freefall
Broken and pitted roads have become a trademark of Bamenda – a symptom of the economic inequality anglophone activists are protesting over
When authorities imposed a curfew on motorbikes in May to curb rising insecurity in the city
separatists responded by ordering drivers to respray taxis white and blue – colours of the flag of the revolt
Those who failed to comply had their cabs torched
The eight-year conflict stems from Cameroon’s colonial past: first occupied by Germany from 1884 to 1916
the country was then a spoil of the first world war
French Cameroon gained independence in 1960
joined by English-speaking Cameroon through a federation a year later
We try to make separatist fighters understand that we are one … together
we can build a better nationGovernment soldierIn terms of territory and population
the francophone section represents 80% of the country while the remainder is English speaking
But a referendum in 1972 abolished the federal structure which had guaranteed rights of the anglophone minority
In the rolling hills of the Menchum area of north-west Cameroon
“General Stone” commands 78 separatist fighters
Stone voices the anger that drove him to abandon farming to fight: “The francophone government has enslaved us for too long: we have many university graduates roaming the streets; people spend up to six years to obtain simple ID cards; elections are around the corner but we already know who will win
Stone says he has repeatedly rejected his family’s requests to lay down his weapon – he is ready to die a “hero”
is challenging – with only plants to treat wounds
Anglophone separatist fighters during reconnaissance training
The English-speaking part of Cameroon accounts for about 20% of the country
“Our objective is always to kill as many Cameroonian soldiers as possible,” Stone says
We have enough ammunition sent in from abroad
Countless numbers have already been killed
“I know we will defeat them militarily one day
Alabukam is a separatist area outside Bamenda where self-styled “Commander Striker” is in charge
The 27-year-old justifies the rebellion on several fronts: francophones “manipulate” the brains of anglophones; francophones squeeze their regions “dry” economically; and francophones deprive them of “lucrative jobs”
Striker is cagey about his unit’s tactics but says: “What we want is separation and nothing else
We trap Cameroonian soldiers with bombs we fabricate
“We blocked the road in Mbengwi for two good years
We also chased the military from their base at Commercial Avenue in Bamenda
Members of the Bataillon d’Intervention Rapide (BIR)

If the separatists feel that the war is tilting in their favour
The staff sergeant has fought in Bamenda and in the volatile Bamessing and Balikumbat areas in the north-west
he acknowledges he’s fighting against his “brothers and sisters”
but maintains “the army is there to do the job”
“The army enjoys the collaboration of the population to put out the separatist fighters,” he says
“The only sensible solution to this conflict is dialogue
Violence can never satisfy nor benefit either side.”
Another soldier of the Cameroonian military now serving in the relatively peaceful southern Tiko area claims they often overpower the enemy in their encounters
“The separatist fighters are poorly trained,” he says
we don’t consider it a war but rather a misunderstanding between brothers
“We try to make separatist fighters understand that we are one,” he says
“I advise them to give up fighting so that
two motorbikes rush past at breakneck speed
“Those are the boys [separatist fighters],” Josiah
They are heading to the bush to consume it
People see the state of the highways as symptomatic of the inequality that affects English-speaking regions of Cameroon
Rebel fighters move freely here – under the nose of Cameroonian soldiers
Most young men joined the war out of desperation to escape the grind of their everyday life
formerly of the Coalition of Cameroon Federalist Groups and Activists (CCFGA) and previously the UN secretary-general’s deputy special representative in Ivory Coast
identifies two factors behind the present conflict
assimilation and takeover” of anglophone Cameroon by successive francophone-led regimes in Yaoundé and “excessive concentration of governmental power
Protesters display the Ambazonia flag during a demonstration in London calling on world leaders to act on the conflict in the region known as Southern Cameroons
He says: “Only federalism can address both of these root causes and pave the way to a durable peace and normalcy in all the 10 regions of Cameroon
Neither a decentralised unitary state nor the breakaway of parts of Cameroon can adequately address these root causes.”
Cameroonians are trapped in a forgotten standoff
Both sides have been accused of engaging in village raids
and the use of torture and sexual violence
The military wants us to report the separatist fighters to them which is a risky thing to do. We live in constant fearMa-Shey Margaret, massacre survivorLast year on 6 November, anglophone rebels killed at least 30 unarmed civilians in a south-west village in Mamfe
the separatists were accused of killing 32 civilians during a bloody attack in the Akwaya district
Cameroon military and the Ambazonia secessionist leaders traded accusations after the killing of schoolchildren in 2020 and 2021. The government later admitted the army’s role in 21 deaths in February 2020 in Ngarbuh
in the north-west – a rare occurrence in a war where denial is commonplace
Witnesses say the soldiers accused villagers of sheltering terrorists
Survivors of massacres accuse both sides of ignoring allegations of civilian harm
the people of Ngarbuh visit the graves of the 21 who died in 2020
and have left a row of burned-out buildings standing as a memorial to the tragedy
“I weep each time I set eyes on the mass graves of the innocent people,” says Ma-Shey Margaret
I believe those people are in heaven because they were unjustly killed
we are still not safe: the military wants us to report the presence of the separatist fighters to them which is a risky thing to do
View image in fullscreenIn Mamfe, where the November 2023 massacre took place, Franca Ojong still lives with the trauma. Armed men broke into her house at about 3am. “They shot my husband in the head and set the house on fire.”
By dawn, all that was left of her home and more than a dozen others was smoke and ashes. “I have nothing to eat. I have nowhere to stay. I need help,” she says.
“My son’s death pains me to this day; he was the pillar of my family,” he says
Many young men with nothing to do with the rebels have been arrested or killed
“The military considers every English-speaking person a separatist fighter
soldiers disguise themselves in civilian attire to arrest anyone they suspect has links with the separatists
The military torments rather than protects us.”
Separatist kidnappings and killings are crippling social
economic and cultural activities and disrupting livelihoods
The strategy has attracted harsh criticism even from within the secessionist leadership
organiser of the Aspire movement pushing for the peaceful recognition of the sovereignty of Ambazonia

“Fighters who kidnap, take ransom and kill fellow Ambazonians have lost the grace and support of Ambazonians and their ancestors,” says Achobang, who recently resigned from the Ambazonia governing council in protest over the public killing of two civilians in Guzang
“These victims have friends and family who cannot embrace the struggle knowing that their loved ones would be subjected to such treatment,” says Achobang
leader of the interim Ambazonia government
“Leaders ordering such conditions that exacerbate the suffering of Ambazonians cannot be for Ambazonia

Cameroon did not expect war to last eight years

After the drug destruction by the MINAT earlier this month, another major drug busting of cannabis has been stopped
officers intercepted a truck heavily loaded with crates of beer at Ndamukong
A deeper inspection revealed that hidden under the crates were 25 tightly packed bags of cannabis
According to the senior superintendent Emmanuel Mbock
the drugs were smuggled and it was through tip off and public collaboration the smugglers were caught
The driver and his assistant were immediately arrested as authorities launched a broader investigation into what they suspect is part of a more extensive trafficking network
Disguising illegal cargo with everyday deliveries
With this new arrest the police authorities are hoping the community will be of more help as the fight against drug trafficking isn’t something the police can do on their own

Julien is a 36-year-old single mother of four from Ndu in the Northwest region
She was forced to flee with her children due to unprecedented violence in 2020
where she had lived peacefully with her community for decades
Having lost her livelihood and facing constant security threats
she had no choice but to seek refuge in the regional capital of Bamenda in the hope of finding a solution
“Things have turned upside down for us so quickly,” says Julien
“I was pregnant with my fourth child and had to flee with my children when they came to burn down our house
and the journey was so long that I miscarried on the way
They arrived in Bamenda after a long and tortured journey
sensing their distress and the gravity of their situation
was kind enough to offer them shelter in a small room
they could not only find rest but also momentarily escape the stress of their recent ordeal
“I continue to believe that this gentleman was sent by God to save us,” she says
I don't know what would have become of us.”
the family eventually had to leave their temporary accommodation
Left without employment or a source of income
Her burden was further compounded when she discovered she was pregnant again in late 2022
prompting her to seek odd jobs wherever she could
in a desperate attempt to secure even the barest essentials for her family
“My children couldn’t even go to school anymore,” she says
“Who was going to pay for their schooling
Sometimes we couldn’t even afford to eat
but then there were stretches of three months where I couldn’t make ends meet.”
her neighbours told her that she could get help from the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)
She reached out to NRC and shared her story
After a few weeks of extensive interviews and a review of her situation
Julien received XAF 150,000 (USD 247) in cash assistance to support her basic needs and kickstart a business
I was able to cover my rent for 10 months,” says Julien
I told myself that instead of spending it all on consumables
I bought firewood and soap to sell and save money
I was able to send my children to school and buy their books.”
Vadèse is another displaced young woman from the Northwest region of the country
Vadèse has already undergone severely traumatic ordeals
Vadèse was living peacefully with her fiancé in Nkambe
where she owned a small restaurant that provided enough income to cover their necessities
brutally murdering her fiancé before her eyes and taking her hostage
“I still remember it like it was yesterday,” she says
“They didn't even give me time to realise what was happening to me
They pulled me out of bed and marched me out of the house
We walked in the bush for I don’t know how long
Vadèse felt as though she were trapped in hell
hoping that God would look upon me and aid my escape,” she says
Her prayers were answered when she seized an opportunity to flee while her captors were momentarily distracted
"I ran like I'd never run before," she remembers
Vadèse found herself in Bamenda after several days walking
She was welcomed by a member of her family
Vadèse did not go out and consequently had no means of making an income
she was selected to receive cash assistance by NRC’s livelihood and food security programme
which is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida)
Vadèse took the opportunity to return to what she knew best: cooking
She opened a small restaurant that sells local food
Her story is one of resilience and courage
"The support I received has transformed my life
It gave me hope and stability in challenging times,” she says
Clashes in the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon have displaced hundreds of thousands of people
the majority of whom are women and children
The general security situation in these regions deteriorated in 2023. By August 2023, some 4,787 security incidents had been recorded
rape or other protection-related incidents
Women and girls are particularly vulnerable
The loss of livelihoods and lack of access to basic needs such as water
are forcing women to live in extremely precarious conditions
Married women are especially at risk of domestic violence
many women are resorting to negative coping strategies to survive
including collecting firewood in dangerous areas
It is essential that the authorities and aid agencies take steps to better protect women and their families from the impact of conflict

recently freed after being kidnapped in Cameroon’s conflict-ridden Northwest region
has broken his silence with a moving and reflective message shared on his Facebook page
His words reveal not only relief but also a profound sense of gratitude and a renewed mission to spread joy and positivity
Nchang expressed awe at the experience:“Being liberated from custody is very fascinating
especially if done by ‘judges’ who don’t have the capacity to detain or liberate you
It is even more fascinating when the person liberated is a professional judge who has been exercising such powers for more than three decades.”
The magistrate also shared an intriguing anecdote about one of his captors calling to reveal the mastermind behind the kidnapping
Nchang said he “begged him not to tell me” to preserve his joy:“The happiness of my release was welcomed by all and sundry
and I want to spread that happiness instead of poisoning people’s minds about the evil people who orchestrated it.”
Nchang expressed profound gratitude to his family
and all who supported him throughout the ordeal
He likened the overwhelming solidarity he experienced to witnessing his own funeral while still alive
humorously quoting his late father-in-law:“The day I die
you people can go to your farms because all of you have already mourned my death.”
The magistrate credited his survival to divine mercy
describing it as exceeding human understanding:“The God we serve is bigger than the one portrayed to us by Christians
Declaring 2025 as his “mission year for happiness,” he urged those who had been saddened by his ordeal to reclaim their joy and celebrate:“For those who could not enjoy their New Year’s Day because of my demise
I urge all of you to declare today as New Year’s Day and celebrate it.”
Nchang declared his commitment to spreading positivity as an “ambassador for happiness” in 2025
ending his message with warm wishes for the New Year:“Happy New Year to all of you.”
stands out as a beacon of hope in a region plagued by violence and insecurity
His resilience and faith offer an inspiring narrative amid the ongoing challenges in Cameroon’s Northwest and Southwest regions
the capital of Cameroon’s North-West region
This is notably lower than the national average of 4.7%

Bamenda is one of the three cities least affected by inflation in the country
other cities experienced higher inflation rates in 2024
Buea has been particularly impacted by the ongoing socio-political crisis that began in late 2016
which has had significant effects on its economy
The INS attributes these regional differences in inflation to factors such as varying transportation costs
and the specific challenges posed by local supply chains

the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) asked clubs in the professional league to submit their preferred home stadiums for the ongoing Elite One season
the implementation of this policy has led to controversy
particularly regarding the Yong Sport Academy (Yosa) of Bamenda and PWD Bamenda
Despite the poor condition of the Yong Francis Arena
Fecafoot allowed it to host Yong Sport's match against AS Fortuna de Mfou on Sunday
securing their first victory of the 2024/2025 season
Fans were hopeful that playing at home would provide a significant advantage
"Maybe playing home matches will change things," said PWD’s assistant coach
after their 1-1 draw against Astres FC of Douala
while this initial trial provided a morale boost for the teams
it was far from a success for the league organizers and the overall image of the Elite One championship
formally requested the Transitional Council for Professional Football (CTFP) to move the matches away from Bamenda
"Colombe approached the federation to request a match postponement
citing security reasons," explained a club official from Colombe du Sud
Aigle Royal du Moungo justified its request on multiple grounds:
the CTFP decided to relocate the matches initially scheduled at Yong Francis Arena
this decision has provoked anger and frustration among supporters of Yosa and PWD
the management of both clubs issued statements urging fans to remain calm
while reassuring them that renovation work is underway to improve Bamenda’s sports infrastructure
the relocation of matches remains a major disappointment for local supporters
who see home advantage as crucial to their teams' success
with growing concerns over security and venue conditions
the question remains: Will Bamenda’s teams get another chance to play at home this season

Bamenda is on track to become a host city for Cameroon's professional football championships
as significant progress is being made to prepare the local stadiums for the competition
A delegation from the Transitional Council for Professional Football
visited the city to assess the readiness and compliance of the facilities with professional standards
The delegation inspected three stadiums in Bamenda
where renovation work is reportedly advancing at a rapid pace
While specific details of the upgrades have not been disclosed
officials emphasized that the improvements are focused on meeting both structural and operational standards for hosting high-profile matches
The visit comes amid ongoing security concerns in the North West region
authorities have reassured the public and football clubs that comprehensive security measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of players
Faustin Mbida and his team expressed optimism about Bamenda’s readiness
citing the dedication of local authorities and stakeholders to bring professional football back to the region
“This effort goes beyond sports; it’s about restoring a sense of normalcy and pride in the community,” Mbida noted
The return of professional football to Bamenda marks a significant milestone for the region
which has long been excluded from hosting major sporting events due to security concerns
it could pave the way for greater regional inclusion in Cameroon's sporting landscape
Further updates are expected as the renovation work progresses and security preparations are finalized
(Business in Cameroon) - Construction of the Bamenda domestic gas filling center in Cameroon’s North-West region is now 85% complete
During a recent visit by Cameroonian parliamentarians
officials confirmed that the remaining equipment had already arrived at Douala Port
Director General of the Hydrocarbon Price Stabilization Fund (CSPH)
which is investing CFA6 billion in the project
reassured that the center will be operational by the end of 2024
This facility is expected to make domestic gas more accessible to Bamenda and surrounding areas
the regulated price for a 12-kg gas cylinder is CFA6,500
but due to transportation costs from Bafoussam
In times of political tension in the Anglophone regions since 2016
prices have spiked to as much as CFA15,000
The center aims to reduce these costs and improve the supply of gas
It will also promote environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on firewood for cooking
With a daily filling capacity of 200 metric tons
the center will ensure a steady supply of gas to the region

Cameroon – The city of Bamenda is reeling after a series of violent incidents that have left two police officers and a bike rider dead within the past 24 hours
The violence began with a brutal attack on a popular commercial bank and continued with a tense encounter between police and a bike rider near the Grandstand area on Commercial Avenue
separatist fighters launched a coordinated attack on a commercial bank on Commercial Avenue
claimed by the Ambazonian Defense Forces (ADF)
involved over ten heavily armed gunmen who arrived in two cars
Eyewitnesses reported intense gunfire lasting several minutes
"I saw one of the attackers pull a police officer outside and slap him before shooting him," recounted a kiosk owner near the bank to Star TV
The gunmen shattered windows and left bullet holes in the bank's walls
Nearby buildings and vehicles also sustained damage from the gunfire
The ADF released a video showing rifles taken from the slain officers
further heightening tensions and fear among local law enforcement
tensions boiled over the next morning when police officers opened fire on a bike rider near the Grandstand area of Commercial Avenue
The rider was part of a group of bikers parading in memory of a colleague who died in an accident the previous Friday
the bike rider ignored police orders to stop and approached the officers aggressively
The incident has sparked further outrage and anxiety among the local population and police force alike
Police officers in Bamenda are reportedly furious and demoralized following the death of their colleagues
Many officers have expressed dissatisfaction with their working conditions and the perceived lack of support from their superiors
The recent violence underscores the ongoing instability in the North West Region
where separatist movements have been fighting for independence since 2016
The conflict has resulted in numerous deaths and widespread displacement
with both security forces and civilians caught in the crossfire
Star TV provided extensive coverage of the aftermath of the bank attack
including eyewitness accounts and footage of the damage
The kiosk owner described the chaos as the gunmen opened fire: "They started shooting and I fell to the ground

committed by fighters advocating for Ambazonian restoration
spotlights the underlying volatility in a region where allegiance can mark one as a target
The issue begs questions about the methods used in this struggle for Ambazonia’s statehood
Advocates often reference historical documentation
like the 1961 Federal Constitution and rulings such as HCB/28/92
arguing for self-determination based on the distinct histories of former French Cameroon and British Southern Cameroons
Yet the violence inflicted on both civilians and political figures shows how divided loyalties and governmental allegiances deepen the risks for everyday residents
The ambivalence felt by many citizens in Bamenda and beyond—torn between governmental loyalty and the call for restored statehood—suggests that peace talks incorporating both historical context and security considerations are essential to prevent further civilian tragedies
a city already grappling with ongoing insecurity
witnessed another chilling incident as an unspecified number of civilians were kidnapped last night in the Nchobo neighborhood
carried out the abduction and transported the victims towards Alabukam
According to information gathered from the Cameroon News Agency (CNA)
The victims were reportedly rounded up in front of their homes
While no group has claimed responsibility for the act
CNA sources revealed that the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of 1.5 million CFA francs for the release of the hostages
This incident adds to the increasing wave of insecurity that has plagued the North West region ever since the Anglophone crisis began
with some attributing the kidnapping to Ambazonian separatists
although the group has not claimed responsibility
Authorities are yet to comment on the matter
but calls for intensified security measures and thorough investigations are growing louder

Responding to incidents of violence during protests with unnecessary or excessive force threatens to further enflame an already tense situation and could put more lives at risk
According to information received by Amnesty International
in various neighbourhoods of Bamenda security forces attempted to prevent the gatherings and used tear gas and water-canon to disperse protesters
At about 10.30 am the police barricaded the entrance to the commercial avenue where people were gathering
A police station was burnt by protesters yesterday afternoon
Security forces also reportedly fired tear gas onto the main Bamenda market where no one was protesting
“Market sellers were sitting at the main gate leading to the market when the police came and decided to break windscreen and put down bikes parked there and firing teargas”
“Sellers were saying: we don’t know what we have done wrong
sellers and bystanders ran into the market and locked the main gate and you could see all the smoke and vapours from the tear gas [inside].”

tension escalates as taxi drivers and residents navigate a new directive from the Ambazonian separatists
led by the notorious Norway-based leader Lucas Ayaba Cho
has mandated that all taxis change their colors from yellow to blue and white
reflecting the colors of the self-declared Republic of Ambazonia
This directive has sparked significant unrest and resistance among the taxi drivers and broader community
culminating in a dramatic rally organized by the Bamenda City Council Mayor
brandishing tree branches as symbols of their plight
They denounced him as the public enemy number one
attributing much of their suffering and the ongoing strife to his unyielding stance
The rally underscored the growing frustration among residents who are caught between the separatist forces and the Cameroonian government
The struggle for the independence of Ambazonia
comprising the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon
has been marked by intense violence and a deepening humanitarian crisis
has resulted in the deaths of an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 people
especially public service personnel and traditional leaders
find themselves targeted by both sides in this brutal conflict
Schools have been closed by separatists to enforce their political demands
and attacks on teachers and students have been reported
The roots of this conflict lie in the colonial past of Cameroon
German Kamerun was divided between the French and British Empires
which gained independence later than French Cameroon
opted to join the latter to form a federal nation
the dissolution of the federal government shortly after has led many in the Anglophone regions to feel marginalized
The directive to change taxi colors is part of a broader strategy by Ambazonian leaders to assert control and signal resistance against the Cameroonian government
the Ambazonian Defense Forces (ADF) justified the color change as a "strategic resistance move," drawing parallels to resistance tactics seen in other global conflicts
this move has not been universally accepted even within the Ambazonian leadership
Prominent figures like Mark Bareta have openly criticized the policy
calling it impractical and damaging to the revolution's credibility
He condemned the burning of a taxi as a misguided act of resistance
highlighting the deepening rifts within the separatist movement
other activists like Tapang Ivo have defended the policy
arguing that it is a necessary step to distinguish the Ambazonian struggle and weaken the Cameroonian government's control
They insist that adherence to such policies is essential for maintaining the momentum of the resistance
The ongoing crisis shows no signs of abating
the Cameroonian government and separatist militias remain entrenched in a combative approach
This latest conflict over taxi colors symbolizes the broader struggle for control and the deep divisions within the movement itself
leaders on both sides must prioritize dialogue over violence
The continued militarization and punitive measures will only deepen the crisis and prolong the suffering
As Bamenda and the rest of the Anglophone regions grapple with these challenges
the international community's attention and intervention may also be crucial in steering the conflict towards a peaceful resolution
Without a concerted effort to address the root causes and grievances
the cycle of violence and retribution is likely to continue

which brought together the nation’s top religious leaders
took place against the backdrop of Cameroon’s ongoing sociopolitical challenges

united the faithful in prayers for peace and prosperity in Cameroon
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent civil and religious figures
including South-West Governor Bernard OKALIA Bilaï and Buea Mayor David Mafany
Both highlighted the seminar’s importance to the region and the nation as a whole
commending the Catholic Church for its role as a mediator and unifying force during turbulent times
he urged the bishops to foster constructive dialogue among all sectors of Cameroonian society
He also called on citizens to take responsibility and advocate for change in the upcoming elections
Many interpreted his remarks as the Church’s official stance against President Paul Biya’s candidacy
echoing similar sentiments previously expressed by bishops such as Mgrs

as well as strategies to promote national unity and cohesion
The seminar will culminate in a final statement outlining the bishops’ recommendations and vision for the future of the Church and the nation

including a deadly explosion at a local bar
this order prohibits the circulation of motorcycles from 6:30 PM to 6:30 AM within Bamenda I
The order emphasizes that anyone violating these provisions will face penalties as per the existing rules and regulations
This decision comes just two days after an explosion at a bar in Bamenda killed two people and injured many others
The attack has been claimed by Ambazonian forces
The North West (NW) and South West (SW) regions of Cameroon have been plagued by ongoing conflicts between separatist groups and government forces
have enforced lockdowns and "ghost town" strikes
These strikes have delayed school reopenings and threatened farming activities
the Ambazonia Defence Force burned dozens of motorbikes in April as punishment for non-compliance with their strikes
detonating around a dozen roadside bombs in the NW region
Government forces responded by killing several notorious separatist fighters
including two in Bafut and Batibo areas on April 8
and two more near Kumba city in the SW on April 24
and the Inspector of Basic Education for Belo were killed in an ambush while on their way to the National Day celebration
two prominent repentant separatist fighters publicly criticized the government's demobilization program in mid-April
The recent restriction on motorbike circulation in Bamenda is part of the broader effort to curb violence and restore order in these troubled regions.
