have petitioned the Vatican over an alleged “desecration of their culture by the Church”
In a letter addressed to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith dated 17 July
Wimbum leaders said their heritage was threatened by the Church’s “cultural appropriation” of their rituals
“Recent actions by the Catholic Church have incorporated elements from our secret societies … into their processions
These processions are outright copyrights of our traditional sacred societies and artefacts,” they said
“By appropriating our sacred practices within Church premises
Catholic priests inadvertently usurp the authorities of our kings.”
The appeal came days after the Nso people of the same diocese complained to Bishop George Nkuo of Kumbo of similar practices in their community
Videos on social media show church groups in the Wimbum and Nso communities employing traditional masquerades in their processions
a former pastor and who now practises traditional religion
said that the Church had had lived peaceably with traditional culture until recently
“What’s happening right now is that the African traditionalists are protesting that the Church is overstepping their bounds in the practice of inculturation,” he said
the director of communications for Cameroon’s bishops’ conference
told The Tablet that bringing practices such as masquerades into churches was not inculturation but “syncretism”
“I don’t think we have even started applying inculturation,” he said
communications director for the Diocese of Mamfe in south-west Cameroon
said the inculturation of Christianity had several facets
“Inculturation means that we let the Gospel values shed light on culture,” he told The Tablet
He said this can only happen when Church leaders understand both Gospel values and the values of a particular culture
“For instance, in the Nso culture, we need to ask the question: what is the use of masquerades? If we are to practise good inculturation in Nso
we are supposed to know what the masquerade means for the Nso man
so that if we must bring masquerades to Church in the name of inculturation
we should know what message we are passing across.”
He said Catholic priests were taught about African traditional religions in their training and formation

Benjamin Strick is a digital investigator with a background in law
military and technology and is the Director of Investigations for the Centre for Information Resilience
He specialises in open source intelligence (OSINT)
Geolocation is crucial in open source investigations
In countries in conflict and/or countries under dictatorship
verifying evidence on the ground can be difficult
Video and photographic materials make it possible to have a working knowledge of events occurring out of reach — and it is always important to geolocate such materials
Cameroon, for example, has a history of government-led attacks on villages. Fighting between military and separatists has seen many Cameroonians displaced or killed. The BBC showed in an open source investigation evidence of villages being burned to the ground by government forces earlier this year
and acts of violence towards civilians caught in the middle of fighting
While we can’t right the wrongs committed against people on the ground
open source investigators are able to analyse the video content to assist reporting and verification of such violent
two videos of attacks on Cameroonian villages surfaced on the internet
They showed clear signs of deliberate arson
as there was no indication of surrounding vegetation burning — just individual buildings ablaze
showed compounds where people were trapped and burned inside
Both videos were narrated by the people doing the actual filming
as a means of explaining what the video authors were seeing
The case study below explains how we geolocated this grim footage
The first video was filmed in Kumbo, Cameroon, at this location
The video, as seen below, was provided by investigative journalist Emmanuel Freudenthal
who was been documenting ongoing violence in Cameroon
— Benjamin Strick (@BenDoBrown) November 16, 2018
Freudenthal approached both Bellingcat and independent open source analysts for assistance in verifying the video
The one clue he immediately had as to the location was that it was filmed recently in the city of Kumbo
knowing that the video was filmed in this specific area would be enough
and to help with investigating what occurred
a geolocation of the video is a priority task
The key markers that stood out in the video
those that would reflect on satellite imagery
These shops and an unfinished building on the other side of the road from the red roof:
After an initial scan through Google Earth, it was clear that with a long red building on one side of the road and shops on the other side, this could be the exact location, as found by open source analyst Sector035
To further verify the location as an exact match
the name of one of the stores seen in the video is “GPS Bookshop.”
Performing a simple Google Search for “GPS Bookshop” in Kumbo does not yield definitive results, but it does appear that the business is listed on a business registry site
and the only other attached information is “Squars.” In viewing other listings
we conclude that Squars must refer to a geographic location
With open source analysis, an important rule of thumb is to “test” information just to see what can come up. In the case of “Squars” in Kumbo, punching it into Google provides the autocorrected search version for Kumbo Squares — a specific area in Kumbo
The thumbnail of one of those yields an interesting result — the long red building from the original video
In this video
we can see a type of dance being performed in front of the long red building
Here is a comparison between the building we saw in the video of the torched ruins
and the one we have found via a Google search
It is apparent that the two buildings are very similar in design
In the second YouTube video from a simple Google search
we can see the same costumed dancer in the same area
but this time from an alternative view — where we can see the other side of the street
The businesses in the backdrop were filmed with this view of the long red building:
the view from the businesses was parallel to the long red building here:
In the video of the burned down businesses
we were shown the long red building from this viewpoint:
Which means the businesses that were destroyed were under this roof:
we have these features from that exact viewpoint:
We can verify their presence on Google Earth from here:
Since I posted these findings on Twitter
a number of Cameroonians have come forward with video and photo evidence of damage to nearby buildings
It is clear that the torching of these stores was not an isolated instance
Another video that surfaced recently was that of the village of Kumfutu
While the previous video did not include evidence of human casualties
the video from Kumfutu came with disturbing photos of charred bodies and injured villagers
The long version of the second video was a documentation of many buildings that had been destroyed
The narrator talks about what was done to each building
The narrator also says that one of the compounds had human remains in it
we see a family whose members had been left homeless
Here is the video, which was uploaded to a public Cameroonian social group on Facebook (click on embedded tweet to view):
— Benjamin Strick (@BenDoBrown) November 19, 2018
Along with the post came two images of unique building designs:
and were allegedly located near each other
these buildings can be matched to the following scenes:
We can confirm that they are next to each other from the video
as the video author walks up a small hill to film the second house
and proceeds to again show the roof of the first here
Because of the unique design of the first house, and the fact that it has a shed on the left and a long shelter at the rear, it was easy to find a match on Google satellite imagery
The red-roofed house next door is also visible on the map
Open source analyst Jura Luga verified the other buildings that were destroyed in the video
These destroyed buildings were shown here:
They can be geolocated to here on Google Maps:
Jura also verified buildings that were destroyed in Kumfutu here and here
the narrator said people were trapped in the burned buildings shown here:
These buildings are located here on Google Maps:
Having taken into consideration the locations of the buildings, and with the differences between the buildings (pre and post-destruction) on available satellite imagery from Digital Globe, open source analyst Nathan Ruser demonstrated that these villages had been destroyed in Kumfutu between October 26 and November 11
In Kumfutu, the houses highlighted in red were destroyed or damaged in fire between Oct 26th and Nov 11th. pic.twitter.com/DHXZCPznfj
— Nathan Ruser (@Nrg8000) November 20, 2018
The red indicates buildings which were either completely
destroyed in the near-complete destruction of Kumfutu
Previous open source investigations have shown that the Cameroon military has systematically burned villages to the ground in Cameroon’s anglophone region, as you can see in the video Cameroon Burning
Further proof of atrocities committed by the military can be seen in another open source investigation on Cameroonian extra-judicial killings
which also involved many of the analysts and investigators in this case study

Kumbo Town is the second largest town in the North West Region of Cameroon
one of the restive English-speaking regions clamouring for autonomy
In recent times it has become an epicentre in the on-going conflict between Cameroon military forces and restorationist forces of the putative Republic of Ambazonia
An unprecedented wave of violence has taken the town captive and is rooted in the New Year's message of President Paul Biya as he approaches his 86th birthday
to use crude military force to quell the uprising if the terrorist/rebels do not lay down their arms.In the early hours of January 1st
to show allegiance to Biya (now in power for over 26 years)
there was a deafening and frightful salvo of gunshots in all military facilities in the town causing the inhabitants flee to safety
In this month of January 2019 areas of the town such as Mbev
and Meluf have been deprived of the right to own and live in decent houses
The conflagration of military fire has reduced many houses to ashes and forced many people to flee to unknown destinations
paving the way for mass looting from the forces of lawlessness and disorder
Many doors of houses are standing ajar after their crude acts
Soldiers come in waves and depart with looted material
especially Android appliances and food items
This probably is a well orchestrated and planned tool and strategy in this war of attrition
disappearances and abductions have become the hallmark of their presence
a pregnant nurse on her way to resume work at Shisong General Hospital was mercilessly gunned down by soldier from a rooftop
Two days later an early dawn raid was effected by the military within the premises of Shisong Hospital causing double trauma for the hospital patients as well as the Cardiac Unit
A young Internally Displaced boy of 17 who had never witnessed heavy military presence ran into the house where he was hosted for safety
but was unfortunately pulled out and riddled with bullets beyond recognition
There is almost daily military presence and shooting around the hospital in the night and the IDPs plus their hosts have all flocked into the wards
The military units making their entry from the West Region into Kumbo are leaving behind a trail of destruction of houses beyond imagination
Food stuff for people's consumption is set ablaze
January 21st a young bike rider at Squares-Kumbo round-about
ran into a military convoy returning from Shisong and was pulled off his bike and slaughtered with impunity
the story was no different; two young boys in their teens had their throats slit open by the military on allegations of being Amba affiliates
Minutes later military canisters were directed to another quarter
Goats and chickens have equally paid a price with their lives for roaming freely in town
They are shot and packed into military vans possibly for consumption
Beer parlours with stocks of beer that have been locked are invaded by these unfriendly visitors who consume the stock to excess and then shatter the remains into bits and pieces
thereby ruining the business of a proprietor
Kumbo Town which used to be bustling with activity has become a dead town
About seven out of every ten houses have been abandoned
Frequent electricity black-outs or cuts are alarming
The cost of petrol and diesel has risen to absurd heights
The prices of basic foodstuffs have risen considerably
Getting water for use and consumption has become a Herculean task
Many people die in homes because they cannot afford the means to reach hospital
Many pregnant women have escaped into the bushes and far off villages for safety
disregarding anti-natal checks and clinics
with a gross shortage of basic commodities - even those that are available are sold at unbearable prices
Educational facilities are completely shut down and unemployment has soared
Dead IDPs are buried in the absence of relations by people of good will
Houses along the main road in the town are branded with bullet holes
Civilian farms within the precincts of military facilities have been torched and destroyed in order to create a buffer zone
Fugitives and IDPs moving into other regions are not free from harassment and death-threats
IDPs are forced to pay a tax before being accommodated
Some are demeaned through innuendo and ethnic slurs
Many people wearing clothing of certain colours have become targets for the military
and red the emblematic insignia of Amba Boys
have become targets for elimination by the military
Bike Riders have not been spared from this fate
Amba Boys that shoot for restoration forces
though defending and fighting for the marginalised
Government sympathisers and those critical of them are whisked-off to unknown destinations where they are tortured beyond recognition and released only when a ransom is paid
They have frequently interrupted the little attempted commercial activity with death threats
Any Amba critic or sell-out receives the crown of brutality from the Amba Fist of Fury
Transit fees/fares demanded by Amba affiliates are heartbreaking
Moving from one Administrative Division to another is a nightmare with numerous check-points for both Amba and military forces
Having identity papers with a Cameroon Government Logo is nauseating and acrimonious to Amba Boys and a lack of them at Cameroon Government checkpoints is an occasion for arrest
This is the predicament of the inhabitants of Kumbo
Reflection: "Actions that are designed for the methodical extermination of an entire people
nation or ethnic minority are always to be condemned as horrendous crimes" (Gaudium et Spes 79)
"Any act of war aimed indiscriminately at the destruction of entire cities or of extensive areas along with their population is a crime against God and man himself
It merits unequivocal and unhesitating condemnation" (Gaudium et Spes 80)
The obligation of preventing war lies on all nations
A world organisation that has Supreme legitimacy and authority seem to be the most apt means of preventing war and promoting peace. Conclusion: Pride which is the spurious feeling of superiority leads to errors of judgement with the consequences of disgrace
There is the need for upgrading the call to the international community to intervene and force the warring parties to the bargaining table in an inclusive dialogue; for the pen is mightier than the sword
If the present trend of events continues unabated
there will surely be a replay of the Rwandan episode
plunging the entire Central African Sub-region into a morass
"as wanton boys are to the flies so are we to the gods

A suspected drunken driver was arraigned Monday after he allegedly slammed into a stopped car this weekend in Fraser
killing an 18-year-old Roseville High School student and injuring three other people
was charged with operating while intoxicated causing death and two counts operating while intoxicated causing serious injury
He was given a bond of $100,000 cash or surety
which he posted before being released on a GPS tether
Kumbo is accused of driving drunk and crashing into the back of a 1996 Lincoln Mark VIII at a “high rate of speed,” police said
The Lincoln was stopped at a red light around 1:40 a.m
Saturday on northbound Groesbeck Highway at 14 Mile
A 20-year-old also seated in the backseat with Jones was hospitalized in critical condition and on life support
“I know he was very well-liked by other students,” Pettyes said of Jones
Jones initially was reported by police to be 19 years old
“They were not doing anything wrong and this guy came in and we don’t think he ever touched his brakes,” Pettyes said of the crash
It remains unclear exactly how fast the suspect was traveling at the time of impact
“We’re still looking into that; we’re getting a search warrant on the car,” he said
“The black box will give us some information
We’ll obtain all the information that the vehicle has.”
It is not believed either back-seat passenger was wearing a seat belt
The 18-year-old driver of the Lincoln remained hospitalized Monday in stable condition while the 17-year-old front-seat passenger was treated and released
but imagine waiting 40 minutes to connect to the internet
“We grumble about our connectivity sometimes,” says Honesdale High School student Arjun Fulp
“but we have it made compared to the kids in Kumbo
rallied members to get behind a project to bring up-to-date computers and connectivity to the young people of this West African community
with help from the middle-school Rotary Club Early Act
have raised $11,000 and need $4,000 more to hit their goal
Arjun got the idea for the project after visiting a Kumbo community center and library built in part by Honesdale Rotary more than a decade ago
“I was really struck by how many kids crowded around the old computers
Arjun added that the computers not only took forever to boot up
That program outdates even us; we didn’t know what it was.”
Interact Club members have spent the past nine months presenting their project to 15 Rotary clubs in northeast Pennsylvania and at the Rotary District 7410 Conference in Scranton last April
Honesdale High School senior Miranda Fritz said the club is committed to raising the last of the funds necessary to complete the project
“We know we only have a few months before we graduate
but we started it and we are going to finish it
and Rotarians around the district and around the world
we can pull together and make our goal a reality for the kids and families of Kumbo.”
Honesdale Rotarian Lisa Champeau said her club was proud to support the project
but it’s a big continent with young people just like our kids yearning to learn and advance themselves in the world,” she said
“Bravo to these Honesdale Interact students for wanting to give their counterparts in Africa the chance to expand their horizons and access something they enjoy here in the United States everyday — the internet.”
Arjun said he initially went to Kumbo because Honesdale Rotary
a sustainable-farm coffee company based in Honesdale have connections there
and he wanted to see if he could help in some way
“All we need to do now is make it happen.”

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The father of a 19-year-old Roseville High School student who died in a crash on Groesbeck Highway in March said Thursday that he is forcing himself to forgive the drunk driver who caused it, because it's the only way he can move forward.
"I'm going to have to forgive you ... it's going to be hard, but I have to, because I have to move on," Julius Jones Sr. said, speaking to Kyle Kumbo at Kumbo's sentencing on Thursday.
Jones said he hopes Kumbo turns his life around.
"I just hope you take this day and honor yourself and do right," Jones said.
Jones' son, Julius Jr., was killed March 12 when Kumbo rear-ended the car the 19-year-old and three other friends were sitting in at a red light on Groesbeck Highway near 14 Mile Road in Fraser.
"I have to hold onto memories when I really want to just hold onto him," the 19-year-old's mother, Vicki Jones, said.
Police said Kumbo's blood alcohol at the time of the crash was 0.134. The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08.
Kumbo pleaded guilty to operating under the influence of alcohol causing death and operating while intoxicated causing an incapacitating injury.
"I will never forget what I did, and I will never repeat my mistake," Kumbo said in a statement, which was read in court by his attorney. "I was the only person who deserved to be hurt that night."
The mothers of two of the other victims who were in the car fought back tears during their victim impact statements.
"As a mother, there is no justice in the world for taking the life of one boy and injuring three others," said Tena Malone, whose 17-year-old son, Dante Carson, called her from the crash scene. "I ran through the police vehicles and ambulances to find my son. I found him crying hysterically."
Malone said her son has survivor's guilt.
“How can I forgive him when my son is waking up in the middle of the night screaming with nightmares?" she said.
Kenyata Davis, mother of 18-year-old Keyon Simmons, said her son suffered a brain injury as a result of the crash.
"My son suffers drastically ... he feels like he shouldn't be here any more," Davis said. "His dreams are crushed. Every day is struggle for him."
Judge Diane Druzinski sentenced Kumbo to 7 to 15 years in prison.

Cameroon could lose the funding of the African Development Bank (AfDB) related to the Ring Road (the 365km Kumbo-Nkambe-Misaje axis)
and Bogo-Pouss (63.17 km) whose procurement procedures have not been completed for over a year now.
AfDB regional director for the Central African region
revealed his concerns to Minister of Public Works (MINTP) Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi
"This incomprehensible situation affects the performance of our portfolio and changes the status of those two operations [Ntui-Mankim and Bogo-Pouss] to the category of risky projects
Our concern is even greater because the remaining funds for the Road Sector Support Project (RSSP) 1 and 2 could be canceled if nothing is done to change their current status by November 15
2021(...) At less than 16 months to the deadline for the last disbursement in the framework of RSSP 1 and 2
construction work on the Ntui-Mankim-Yoko and Bogo-Pouss roads is still pending,” the letter informed.
As far as the Ring Road project is concerned
Serge N’Guessan explains that commitments were made when signing the AfDB’s loan agreement (ed
note: in June 2021) that specific measures would be taken to relaunch the tender process for the Kumbo-Nkambe-Misaje road section and construction works would start before end 2021
there has been no answer to the proposal submitted by the AfDB teams in that regard
"In light of the development in the procurement case
we would like to express our concerns about those commitments,” he wrote asking the MINTP to take urgent measures to avoid the cancellation of those funding lines.
The overall funds that could be pulled out are estimated at XAF188 billion
XAF106 billion is for the Ring Road formed by the Bamenda-Bambui-Ndop-Babessi-Kumbo-Nkambe-Misaje-Nyos-Wum-Bafut-Bamenda road loop with several connections to the Nigerian border
from Misaje notably. At the same time
XAF50 billion is for the Ntui-Mankim road and XAF32 billion for the Bogo-Pouss road project.
China Railway was awarded the construction contract but
which took part in the tender procedure launched on May 15
filed an appeal before the public procurement regulator ARMP (on August 1
ARMP asked the contract to be awarded to Sinohydro
the AfDB had already issued a no-objection certificate to China Railway as the selected contractor
the MINTP is requesting another certificate of no-objection for Sinohydro
As far as the Bogo-Pouss road project is concerned
the public procurement authority CCCM-TR opposed the selection of Tunisian firm Soroubat as the preferred bidder
Soroubat’s bid (XAF50 billion) is higher than the XAF32 billion bid submitted by its immediate competitor Gitto Costruzioni Generali Nigeria
believing that Gitto is underbid and is not financially capable to handle the project
the MINTP decided to declare the tender process unsuccessful.
(Business in Cameroon) - A divisional handicrafts exhibition for Bui division organized by the Divisional Delegation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises
was one of the fleet-footed attackers who propelled Kumbo Strikers into the limelight of African soccer last year
Currently playing for a Yaounde – based division III side A.S
he says he decided to leave Kumbo because of his ambition to play professional football
He further intimates that the Strikers are having problems today because players quit the club to play in other clubs where they could be easily seen and contacted
He spoke to Douglas Achingale and began by naming the clubs he played for before joining Kumbo Strikers
Were you a happy player while playing for Kumbo
My stay in Kumbo permitted me to discover many things
It enabled me to reach and play the semi finals of the African Cup Winners Cup competition last year
Financially were you comfortable in that club
I can’t say I was financially comfortable because in Cameroon we can’t really talk of money when talking football
We play local football essentially to keep fit
Kumbo Strikers are currently not finding their feet in the elite championship
The club faces problems today because players are leaving it
They fear that they would not be exposed if they continue to play for that club since the town (Kumbo) is in the hinterland
players now prefer to play in clubs where they would easily be seen and contacted by bigger and why not foreign clubs
Was that the reason for your departure from the club
Why not play for the national team or go professional
We are currently topping our league table and we’re very sure to ascend to Division II
I’ve had a provincial selection with the club which makes me a potential national team player
Can one conclude that you left Kumbo for a 3rd Division club because you were not solicited by another big club
I was contacted by clubs like Bamboutos Mbouda
But I preferred to go to Alaves because my manager wished that I stay in Yaounde
And I can assure you that my stay here is bearing fruits
I’ve already been contacted by some clubs in Germany
All things being equal I’ll travel to these countries for trails soon
But if by some misfortune I don’t do so
I still remain at the disposal of big home-based clubs

Just hours after a Bishop in Cameroon’s volatile North West region called for an end to the ongoing civil conflict
the director of youth ministry for the Diocese of Kumbo
and Father Patrick Atang of Mbessa Parish were taken late at night on Thursday when they were travelling to the town of Elak-Oku
Bishop George Nkuo of Kumbo had publicly denounced the atrocities committed by government soldiers and separatists in the area
“Kumbo has had its fair share of suffering,” the bishop said during the Assumption Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus
“We have seen innocent people brutally killed
A lot of people have lost their homes and property
Violence and all forms of torture and cruelty have become so common that we now consider it normal to kill
“We continue to hear gruesome stories of people kidnapped or arrested
tortured and asked to pay huge ransoms before they are released.”
the diocese issued a statement calling for their immediate and unconditional release
The police are on the search for the abducted priests whose whereabouts are still unknown
The Catholic Church has been vocal about speaking out for justice for Anglophone Cameroonians
as well as calling out the human rights abuses of the security forces; at the same time
they have condemned the tactics of the separatists
This has led the clergy to be targeted by both sides
and priests are often kidnapped for ransom by the separatists
The Archbishop Fontem Esua of Bamenda was himself held by rebels for hours after being stopped at a separatist checkpoint
The separatists have made a school boycott a cornerstone of their secessionist strategy
with over 80 percent of children forced out of classes
Schools that tried to defy the boycott were burned down and students and teachers kidnapped
“It is a crime against humanity to deny our children the right to go to school in the name of a struggle
no matter how legitimate our case may be,” the bishop said
He also said that children fleeing Kumbo to seek schooling elsewhere have been “mercilessly exploited.”
for our children to leave Kumbo and pay 250,000 francs [about $500] as day students in Yaoundé or Douala
you can sponsor five to ten students in Kumbo
The bishop appealed to a sense of empathy from both separatists and government soldiers
and called on the people of his diocese to fight evil
“History will stand to judge us,” he warned
He said only an abiding faith in God and the love of Christ can bring peace back to Kumbo
to Cameroon’s North West and South West regions
Nkuo said that although he is worried about the situation
“I am fully aware that anyone who speaks about these things stands the risk of being kidnapped or being killed
