That’s why Tim Mbanga chooses to come to Nutrien’s Potash mine in Rocanville, Saskatchewan each day.
Tim began his career at Nutrien in 2015 as a Process Engineer, and he served in a variety of roles across the operation before being promoted to his current role of Chief Metallurgical Engineer in 2019.
In this position, Tim provides expertise and technical support for the plant’s recovery improvements, experimental development, process control and capital and investment projects. He also works on many environmental, mechanical, process and continuous improvement initiatives at the site. The best part of his day? Collaboration and mentorship.
“What drives me is the level of commitment and teamwork at Rocanville. We always work as a team, which is something I lacked at several of the mines I worked at before,” Tim explains. “My passion is to mentor young, upcoming engineers, so I’m grateful for the opportunity to support a team of six engineers in training in the metallurgical engineering department.”
When he’s not at work, Tim gives back to his community in much the same way. He volunteers with the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Saskatchewan’s (APEGS) Kindergarten to Grade 12 Program and the Canadian Mineral Processors’ (CMP) Mentorship Program and serves as a judge at a Regina high school science fair.
On top of that, his involvement with CMP – a branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) – includes previous positions as Co-Chair (2020), Technical Chair (2018-2019) and a member of the National Executive Committee. Tim also provides consulting support for engineering applicants from outside Canada and engineering candidates applying for their professional designation.
As a result of his dedication to the engineering profession and his community, Tim achieved the 2021 CIM Presidents’ Role Model Medal, which is awarded to individuals for setting an outstanding example and recognizing their early career accomplishments as a role model within CIM.
“I’m proud to be recognized for this award and to work at Nutrien,” he says. “When I first started at Rocanville, I met a lot of employees who had been working at the site for 30 years, and I wondered how they did it – now on my sixth year with the company, I get it. At Nutrien, we are one team, all looking out for each other under our culture of care, and that’s the best part about working here.”
In my role I track the global agricultural fundamentals that help in predicting short to long-term trends driving the future direction of the global agriculture industry. (Business in Cameroon) - The Douala Urban Community (CUD) is planning to build an affordable housing development on a 9-hectare site in Mbanga-Bakoko
located in the third district of the economic capital
The project will be situated on remaining land dedicated to social housing in the area
and the site can be accessed via two entrances—one to the north from the Chirac neighborhood
and a southern entrance (currently under development) connecting directly to National Route No
The development will consist of 10 buildings
each with six floors above ground and one basement
offering a total of 360 medium- and high-standard housing units
The plan also includes a multi-sport gymnasium for indoor football
and basketball; a swimming pool with surrounding commercial spaces; a party hall complex; three office buildings; landscaped areas; a drainage system; and parking spaces
"We are currently working on a call for tenders to secure financing
and management for the project," said an official from the CUD
This suggests that a public-private partnership (PPP) will likely be the preferred financing model for the development
The initiative aims to provide new housing in a city with nearly 4 million residents
with about 10,000 newcomers arriving each month
This new urban development complements government efforts to address the country's housing deficit
Official figures show that Cameroon has a shortfall of around 2.5 million social housing units
the government launched a program in 2009 to build 10,000 social housing units
along with the development of 50,000 buildable plots
nearly 2,000 units have been completed in cities such as Yaoundé

The transition from transportation to energy efficiency was a natural progression
sparked by my work on electrified mobility and exposure to the broader energy sector
particularly the appliance standards and labelling programme
intrigued me due to the significant energy-saving potential in this sector
my interest in local protection regulation and international trade
further motivated me to take on this challenge
The energy efficiency standards and labeling (S&L) programme has achieved several milestones
We successfully transitioned from a voluntary to a mandatory program
enforcing compliance with minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) and energy efficiency labelling for appliances
This has maximised energy savings and helped us meet national energy conservation goals
We've also expanded MEPS to include general service lamps and electric motors
Another significant achievement is the upcoming redesign of the South African Energy Efficiency Label
This redesign is necessary to reflect advancements in technology and higher efficiency levels of modern appliances
We are also exploring the replication of this success in other sectors
Developing water efficiency labels for plumbing fixtures and water-consuming devices is a promising area of opportunity
The S&L programme has a strong focus on awareness creation and capacity building
We actively engage young people by appointing and training them as promoters to educate the public about energy efficiency labels
I mentor young talents like Motlatsi Litabe and Kwena Matlwa
whose innovative approaches align with our mission.Sanedi's ongoing internship programme further provides opportunities for young professionals to gain experience and contribute to the energy sector's future
Our internship program typically spans 12-24 months and targets graduates in various fields
We also welcome graduates in supporting functions like legal
The programme offers a balanced blend of applying academic knowledge to real-world challenges and providing further education and development through tailored plans
This approach equips interns with the skills and experience needed to thrive in the broader energy sector
SAFEE focuses on promoting and exposing more women to the energy management field through coaching
influencing conversations on key energy platforms
and aligning our actions with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy's Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Strategy
The globalisation of electric mobility presents an interesting challenge for South Africa
as we currently rely on exports of internal combustion engine vehicles
As international markets shift towards electric vehicles (EVs)
we will need to adapt to meet the demands of this convergence between electricity and mobility
Households also have a unique opportunity to contribute by generating power from sources like rooftop solar
and potentially even transferring excess energy back to the grid
This could be revolutionary for a country facing electricity shortages
While these concepts have been explored in South Africa before
and uncertainties around energy supply have slowed progress
globalisation may force the necessary changes in the future
Having energy efficiency specialists with diverse backgrounds
will be an asset in navigating these complex issues
Energy efficiency is a collective responsibility
and we must all strive to use scarce resources wisely

Lapiro de Mbanga was a musical “freedom fighter” who articulated the daily injustices he witnessed in his songs – and was punished hard for his right to express them
the country which gave him asylum in 2012 at a time when he had to leave Cameroon under dramatic circumstances
“Authorities in Cameroon continued to harass and threaten Lapiro even after he was released
and we needed to find an urgent solution,” told Freemuse Director Ole Reitov
Lapiro was given refugee asylum in the United States
“Lapiro said that Freemuse ‘saved his life’
He often told us that he ‘was ready to die’
but we never felt we were ready to loose him,” said Ole Reitov
He will always be remembered as ‘the people’s voice’ against corruption and power abuse.”
newspapers in Cameroon described his death as “a huge loss to Cameroonian music.”
Lapiro’s crime allegedly was that amid nationwide strikes and mass demonstrations in 2008
he had composed and recorded the song ‘Constitution Constipée’
in which he describes the country’s president
as “caught in the trap of networks that oblige him to stay in power even though he is tired.” The song became an unofficial anthem of the protests
and Lapiro was arrested and charged of inciting youth unrest
“My struggle has always been to denounce inequalities
and danger is part of that mission,” said Lapiro de Mbanga when he was interviewed in 2010 during his unfair imprisonment where he shared a cell with 50 other prisoners
The news was conveyed to Lapiro in his prison cell in Cameroon a few hours before the prize ceremony took place at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum in attendance of international luminaries such as the celebrated Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf
Time Out founder Tony Elliot and Human rights activist Bianca Jagger
Lapiro contracted typhoid fever and nearly died of that disorder and respiratory complications
In addition to Freemuse’s world-wide campaign for his release
Mondomix compiled a CD in support of Lapiro and campaigned actively in France for his release
the U.S.-based lawyers’ organization Freedom Now monitored Mbanga’s case throughout his incarceration
the Writers in Prison Committee of International PEN also launched a campaign to help win Mbanga’s freedom
the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention declared that Mbanga’s arrest was an infringement of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
He was released from prison on 8 April 2011
one day before the official end of his sentence
and three of their children left Cameroon for the United States
where they had been granted asylum after receiving threats on this life
His exile was described by one newspaper as a major loss for the Cameroonian music scene
Lapiro de Mbanga – his real name was Lambo Sandjo Pierre Roger – composed and recorded what Index on Censorship has described as “a long list of biting texts on the socio-economic realities in his beleaguered country.”
His hit songs during the 1980s and 1990s were regularly censored by the Cameroonian government
and he was seen as a spokesman for the youth of his country
using the power of popular music to campaign for social reforms in his native Cameroon during three decades
a book detailing Mbanga’s trial and the reasons for his exile (Cabale Politico-Judiciaire Ou La Mort Programmée D’Un Combatant De La Liberté) has been said to be “due for release soon”
Cameroon has still not paid compensation to Lapiro and his family
Nasilele Mbanga is a 27-year-old nurse at Nankudu District Hospital
located approximately 120 kilometres west of Rundu
who exemplifies that genuine community service transcends fame and recognition
She is a devoted civil servant who personifies care
compassion and unwavering commitment to the noble profession
Her journey into nursing was motivated by a profound aspiration to positively impact the lives of others.
After earning her nursing certificate from Welwitchia Health Training Centre in 2022
opting to work as a nurse in a rural healthcare facility where medical services are frequently needed
“It has always been my dream to be a nurse as I love caring for people
and it has always been my dream to work for the government,” she noted.
Numerous rural communities in Namibia face challenges in accessing health education and preventive healthcare services.
nurses such as Mbanga are essential in closing this gap
“I don’t just focus on treating diseases; I also focus on empowering people to understand how to avoid getting sick in the first place,” she stated
Mbanga’s passion and expertise have proven invaluable to the Ministry of Health and Social Services
Her contribution to healthcare in the rural region cannot be overstated
“Being part of a team dedicated to healing and recovery is truly fulfilling
especially when it comes to the joy of helping women through normal childbirth,” she shared
she faces numerous challenges in her daily life as a nurse
One of the most difficult aspects of her job is the emotional toll of losing patients.
although I would have done everything I can to save the person,” she observed.
she frequently encounters the threat of infectious diseases and injuries in her profession
Working in a rural hospital requires her to remain vigilant and ready for any circumstances that may arise
The conditions of numerous healthcare institutions
further complicate her role as many of these facilities are old and lack sufficient funding
resulting in a sub-optimal working environment for healthcare professionals
she derives fulfilment from the positive difference she makes in her patients’ lives
“What I find most satisfying about my job is making a real difference in people’s lives
providing comfort and offering support during vulnerable times,” she said.
When asked about memorable moments in her career
she reflected on the times when she was able to provide life-saving treatment or offer emotional support to patients during their most difficult moments.
“There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you helped someone through a tough time,” she continued
She believes that working for the public sector allows her to serve the community in a way that truly makes a difference.
“What I like most about working for the government is the ability to be part of something bigger than myself
It’s about serving the people and helping improve their lives,” she beamed
Mbanga is aware of the misconceptions that some people have about public servants.
“There is a big misconception that people like me
I work hard every day to provide the best care possible for my patients
and we take pride in our work,” she countered.
she wants to remain committed and be in public service for as long as she can
Her goal is to continue making a difference in people’s lives
and to improve the healthcare system in rural areas
I would like to pursue further education in nursing
and specialise in areas such as maternal health or infectious diseases
I hope to continue growing as an individual and contribute even more to the community that has supported me
I wish to make an even greater impact on the lives of the people I serve
and to inspire others to join the healthcare profession,” she emphasised
Mbanga added that working for the government is rewarding
as there’s stability and a fair working balance
and ensures that you have an income for the rest of your life.

Lapiro de MbangaInternational organization Freemuse, which advocates freedom of expression for musicians, announced today that Cameroonian vocalist Lapiro de Mbanga has been granted asylum in the USA and arrived safely with his family yesterday.
Lapiro de Mbanga was imprisoned in Cameroon for three years for a song criticizing President Biya. In his song ‘Constipated Constitution’ Mbanga criticized President Paul Biya for changing the constitution in his own favor. The song became an anthem for demonstrators in Cameroon in 2008 and in order to silence de Mbanga, false charges were made against him. The singer was charged for inciting demonstrators to burn down a banana plantation.
Freemuse and other freedom of expression organizations launched several international campaigns for his release and in 2009 initiated a partnership with Freedom Now, a US based advocacy organization.
Earlier this year The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention issued a legal opinion declaring that the detention of Lapiro de Mbanga, one of Cameroon’s most famous singers, by the Cameroonian Government was completely arbitrary and a violation of international law, specifically the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
In spite of this the government in Cameroon has made no attempts to compensate the singer, who has continued to receive anonymous threats. Last week Lapiro and his family managed to leave Cameroon and stayed in a neighboring country waiting for all papers to be cleared. This morning he told Freemuse that the family has now arrived safely in USA.

Lapiro de Mbanga
known as Ndinga Man meaning Guitar Man
died of cancer in the United States on March 16
political activist and general spokesperson of the downtrodden had been granted political asylum there in September 2012 after serving a three-year sentence in Cameroon for his alleged role in the anti-government riots in February 2008 – charges that were widely considered to be politically motivated
News of de Mbanga’s passing began as an online rumor
it was confirmed that he had died in in a hospital in Buffalo

This information was confirmed by Jacob Nguni, de Mbanga’s close friend and former guitarist with the late Prince Nico Mbarga’s Rocafill Jazz band, who was quoted [fr] saying:
This is a criminal act carried out by Cameroonian authorities
Lapiro died from an illness that was detected as early as his first year in prison… An explicit order was given not to give him treatment
Lapiro was informed of this while he was behind bars… By the time he came out of prison and finally made it to the US
it was already too late to save him… Incidentally
Lapiro was set free because Cameroonian authorities knew the truth about his illness and did not want him to die in prison
Nguni’s claim was not new. In fact, de Mbanga himself had said as much during a May 2013 interview [fr]
To former Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV) journalist Boh Herbert
his death was more than just a case of negligence:
that the government of Cameroon has specialized in administering death to its most formidable political opponents and dissidents
using prison as the slaughter house or as the transit station “en route” to the grave
We also now know that denying medical care to prisoners is not just negligence
Cameroonians were already pointing an accusing finger at Biya regime

— Citizens Initiatives (@IGC_Cameroon) March 16, 2014
Christopher Fomunyoh, regional director for Central and West Africa at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, wrote:
Today a mighty giant in the fight for political space and freedoms is fallen and more so on foreign shores without the opportunity to wave a last farewell to his fellow compatriots — a people to whom he had given so much and meant so much in his youthful activist days
Our ancestors must be asking: what have we become
vivacity and sense of patriotism endure forever
De Mbanga did not just die in exile; he will not be buried in Cameroon, and instead his body will be cremated [fr]. These were his last wishes – a major blow to his fans in Cameroon who, according to the state-owned CRTV
“have been crying out for the remains to be brought back to Cameroon so their hero can be given a befitting burial”
As one fan commented [fr] on an article about his May 29 funeral service in Buffalo
Lapiro’s greatest error was to demand he should be buried in the United States
Lapiro was our hero and the Cameroonian people needed to see and receive his corpse at home
The collection of his body from the Douala airport would have brought out the masses
and probably the entire population of Douala and other towns…
the refusal to take Ndinga Man’s corpse home is shocking
This was de Mbanga’s last act of defiance against a regime noted for hijacking the funerals of its staunchest opponents – some whom it pushed to an early grave – and using them as platforms to garner political legitimacy. As Boh Herbert pointed out:
After decades of never-ending police harassment
including the sabotage of his means of livelihood such as the burning down of his nightclub in Mbanga… after three years in prison… it is instead “Ngatta Man” [prisoner]
as Lapiro renamed himself after his time in the big house… who
by denying the regime in Yaounde the never-ending affixing of medals of honor on those it kills
In the end, the “sheriff of the backyards” who drew his strength from the warmth of the downtrodden in Cameroon will paradoxically end up in the distant US – without the massive farewell that his “complices” or partners-in-crime in the streets had hoped for

There is limited information on the comparative genomic diversity of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli from wastewater
coli isolates belonging to various pathotypes obtained from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and its receiving waters using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and an array of bioinformatics tools to elucidate the resistomes
Twelve multidrug-resistant (MDR) diarrheagenic E
coli isolates were obtained from the final effluent of a WWTP
and the receiving river upstream and downstream of the WWTP were sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq machine
The multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis revealed that multiple sequence types (STs)
the most common of which was ST69 (n = 4) and ST10 (n = 2)
One isolate was assigned to a novel ST ST11351
A total of 66.7% isolates were positive for β-lactamase genes with 58.3% harboring the blaTEM1B gene and a single isolate the blaCTX−M−14 and blaCTX−M−55 extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes
One isolate was positive for the mcr-9 mobilized colistin resistance gene
Most antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were associated with mobile genetic support: class 1 integrons (In22
A total of 31 virulence genes were identified across the study isolates
including those responsible for adhesion (lpfA
The virulence genes were mostly associated with IS (IS1
antibiotics were evident in several isolates
The phylogenomic analysis with South African E
coli isolates from different sources (animals
and humans) revealed that isolates from this study mostly clustered with clinical isolates
Phylogenetics linked with metadata revealed that isolates did not cluster according to source but according to ST
The occurrence of pathogenic and MDR isolates in the WWTP effluent and the associated river is a public health concern
The role of the environment in the spread of antibiotic resistance is an evolving issue (1)
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have received a lot of attention because of the central role they play in reducing pollutant loads that include antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB)
and their associated mobile genetic elements to acceptable limits before the discharge of treated effluent into receiving water bodies
With inadequately maintained sanitation infrastructure, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and emerging economies like South Africa face challenges with the release of untreated or poorly treated effluent into the environment, which may be a driver for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance in these settings (2)
Constant monitoring of WWTPs for the release of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria into receiving waters via their effluents is important as it indicates what is disseminated to the environment
Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli pathotypes are a public health concern (5). Pathogenic MDR E. coli that affects humans and animals have been reported in the water environment (6–8)
studies that employ sequencing technologies to investigate environmental E
coli or any other bacteria are rare in Africa
there is little information regarding environmental isolates and their association with other isolates from clinical and agricultural sources
We sought to compare the genomics of MDR environmental E
coli isolates belonging to various pathotypes obtained from a WWTP and its receiving waters using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatics tools in terms of their lineages
and phylogenies to determine associations/correlations with clinical
Ethical approval was received from the Biomedical Research Ethics Committee (Reference: BCA444/16) of the University of KwaZulu-Natal
Permission to collect water samples was sought and granted by Umgeni Water
which owns and operates the investigated WWTP
A longitudinal antibiotic resistance surveillance study was undertaken in the uMgungundlovu District, one of 11 districts in the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Water samples were collected fortnightly for 7 months from May to November 2018 at the largest urban WWTP in the district. Manual grab water samples were collected in sterile 500-ml containers according to Kalkhajeh et al. (9)
upstream (29°36′10.73″S and 30°25′29.97″E)
downstream (29°36′27.54″S 30°27′0.76″E)
and from the influent (29°36′3.70″S 30°25′41.71″E) and final effluent (29°35′49.97″S 30°26′19.74″E) of the WWTP
The WGS study sample consisted of a subset of 12 MDR diarrhoeagenic isolates obtained from the upstream
The selection of isolates was based on their antibiograms and pathotypes
The assembled genomes were analyzed for multilocus sequence typing (MLST) sequence types (STs) on the MLST 1.8 database hosted by the Center for Genomic Epidemiology (CGE) (http://cge.cbs.dtu.dk/services/MLST/). Isolates without STs were submitted to the EnteroBase Escherichia/Shigella database (https://enterobase.warwick.ac.uk/species/index/ecoli) and assigned novel STs
Mutations conferring resistance to fluoroquinolones were determined from the assembled genomes using BLASTN (https://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi?PAGE_TYPE=BlastSearch)
DNA gyrase (gyrA and gyrB) and DNA topoisomerase IV (parC and parE) genes and the reference strain E
coli ATCC 25922 (Accession number: CP009072) were aligned with the genomes of this study using BLASTN
The mutations in the isolate of the genomes of this study were manually curated and tabulated
or bird) or from the environment were highlighted with the same color
The 12 E. coli isolates investigated in this study were obtained from the WWTP and its associated waters. Seven isolates were from the downstream site, four were from the upstream site, and one isolate was obtained from the final effluent. The isolates belonged to the diarrheagenic group of E. coli; seven were EAEC, three were EIEC, with one EHEC, and one EPEC (Supplementary Table 2)
The remaining four isolates had unique resistance profiles AMP–TET–AZM–SXT
and AMP–AMC–LEX–CTX–CAZ–CRO–FEP–SXT but were all resistant to AMP
and mobile genetic elements found in the Escherichia coli isolates
The genomic characteristics of the E. coli sequences are presented in Supplementary Table 2. The total assembled genome size ranged from 4.7 to 6.1 MB; the GC content ranged from 50.4 to 51.2; and the N50, L50, and the total number of contigs are also shown in Supplementary Table 2
The quinolone resistance determinant regions (QRDRs) were investigated for mutations in all isolates. The QRDR consists of DNA gyrase (gyrA and gyrB) and DNA topoisomerase IV (parC and parE) genes. The gyrA gene (S83L, D678E, L447M, A828S, and D87N), the gyrB gene (E703D, A618T, E185D, E58D, and I60V), and the parC gene (E62K, D475E, M241I, T718A, and S80I) all had five mutations while the parE had four mutations (V136I*, K146T, D475E, and L416F) (Table 2)
Isolate U69 had known mutations gyrA (S83L and D87N) that confers resistance to NAL and CIP
and parC (S80I) and parE (L416F) that confer resistance to CIP
which contained unique mutations gyrA (D678E* and A828S*)
and D475E*) was susceptible to all investigated quinolones
Point mutation table for gyrA/B and parC/E genes of environmental E
The IncFII was the most detected plasmid replicon, with 10 (83.3%) isolates harboring it (Table 1). The IncFIA (25%), IncFIB (50%), IncQ1 (33.3%), IncI1 (16.7%), Col156 (25%), and Col440I (16.7%) plasmid replicons were also detected in some isolates. Most isolates (83.3%) had more than one plasmid replicon; however, no plasmids were detected in one isolate, U88 (Table 1)
there was no unique pattern with respect to the replicon type
coli isolates were closely related (98–100% similarity) with target sequences in the GenBank database
The rich diversity of ISs and transposons attests to the plasticity of the bacterial genomes and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs within and between different isolates
Mobile genetic elements associated with antibiotic resistance genes in environmental E
A total of 45 IS families were detected across the isolates (Supplementary Table 3)
There was a great diversity of IS families
A total of 19 intact prophages were found across all the investigated isolates (Supplementary Table 3). The Entero_mEp460 and Shigel_sfII were the most common prophages occurring in four different isolates each. The Entero_PsP3 (n = 3), Salmon_Fels_2 (n = 3), and Entero_fAA91_ss (n = 2) also occurred in several isolates. None of the prophages carried ARGs; however, some prophages carried virulence genes (Table 4)
The abundance of ISs and prophages in environmental E
coli isolates is evidence of a very flexible genome that is constantly gaining and losing genetic elements through mobilizable regions of the genome
Mobile genetic elements associated with virulence genes in environmental E
Most of the virulence genes and their associated MGEs were similar (98–100%) to target sequences in GenBank
with the most hits being for chromosomal sequences
coli virulence genes may mostly be carried on chromosomes
The somatic (O) and flagellar (H) antigens were used for serotyping environmental E. coli isolates where nine different O antigens and 11 different H types were identified across all isolates. No O type was detected for isolate D18, which only had the H31 antigen (Supplementary Table 2)
The complexity and diversity of the virulome coupled with the range of identified capsule types are worrying as they are associated with virulence
Environmental isolates have a rich repertoire of virulence genes mobilized mostly by ISs contributing to the dynamic milieu of resistance
Figure 1. The phylogenetic branch and metadata [demographics, molecular typing, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)] coupled by the use of Phandango (https://github.com/jameshadfield/phandango/wiki) in isolated multidrug resistant Escherichia coli strains (n = 12) from wastewater sources in South Africa
were more closely related to each other and did not cluster with any isolates from animals
or humans and may be considered a unique aquatic lineage
Circular phylogenomic tree with color annotations depicting the relationship between E
coli isolates from this study and South African isolates from diverse sources in the one-health continuum
The strains used in this study (from environmental source colored in purple) were basically related to strains from human sources (colored in green)
Genomic insights reported in this study revealed the complexity and diversity of lineages
coli found in wastewater and river water in Kwazulu Natal
intimating that the aquatic environment contains a fluid and dynamic milieu of ARB and ARGs
The virulence genes were mostly associated with IS
which are probably central in their rearrangement and transfer
and ARGs in bacterial isolates is a cause for concern as it may lead to co-selection of ARB
this is the second report of the mcr-9 positive isolate in Africa and the first in Southern Africa
Isolate U117 had tet(B) and tet(C) flanked by an insertion sequence IS4 (SVa5)
which may be important in mobilizing these resistance genes
these results revealed that ARGs carried on plasmids predominate the investigated water resistome; however
and integrons accentuate the mobility of the plasmid-encoded ARGs and HMRGs
The virulome of the environmental isolates investigated in this study revealed a diverse assemblage of virulence genes that are mobilizable and not clone specific
The EPEC isolate from this study probably originated from an animal host
This study focused on a small subset of MDR and diarrheagenic E
its findings may not be generalized for all E
Similar studies employing a larger sample size and covering greater geographical area and diversity of E
this study adds to the knowledge that pathogenic E
coli can survive and be disseminated in the water environment
coli isolates have a wealth of ARGs and virulence genes that have been mobilized on diverse MGEs as evident from the different permutations and combinations of ARGs
coli STs and pathotypes from the different water sources
The findings of this study may not be typical of all WWTPs and river systems in South Africa or beyond but form a basis of the need for surveillance systems that employ high-throughput technologies like WGS to gain genomic insights into the environmental dimensions of AMR
Surveillance of ARB in wastewater and associated surface waters could serve as a proxy for local antibiotic resistance and how this changes over time

companies working on the construction of the social housing at Mbanga-Bakoko are ordered to deliver the houses before end 2020
This order was instructed by Ahmadou Sardaouna (photo)
Director-General of Société immobilière du Cameroun (SIC) during his visit in Douala last February 20
the officer noticed that the execution rate of the construction contracts launched 10 years ago is no more than 50%
This glaring lateness in the project aimed at providing additional 10,000 social houses to the government is the fault of companies in charge
Many missions conducted on the field over the 10 years revealed that many of those companies do not have good financial standing
The contracts with many of them have been canceled but never reattributed
COMEDIAN Alexei Sayle celebrated his 61st birthday with the “best ever” present after his missing cat was returned home safe and sound
Named after Zimbabwean political exile Wilf Mbanga
long-haired cat vanished three weeks ago after running out of the front door at Mr Sayle’s home in Doughty Street
Mr Sayle contacted the New Journal after putting up missing cat posters around Bloomsbury
The story was picked up by The Independent and The Times newspapers and even discussed on the BBC World Service
The good news of Wilf’s return finally came on Monday after a Kuwaiti family staying in Prince Albert Road
found the bedraggled cat cowering on their doorstep
Somehow he had managed to cross Euston Road during his three weeks on the run
The family contacted Mr Sayle and his wife Linda on Monday morning after finding details on the internet
Mr Sayle said: “I’m 61 today but this has put 10 years on me.”
The family gave him lots of treats and things and seemed really nice.”
Wilf Mbanga – believed to be a Maine Coon – was a stray cat who originally turned up without explanation in the garden of Mr Sayle’s friend John Humphrys
the BBC journalist and famously fearsome Today programme interviewer
Mr Sayle said: “John is not an animal lover
He was going to call him ‘Lion’ but we wanted to call him Wilf Mbanga
He said he knew Wilf Mbanga because he used to be the Rhodesia [Zimbabwe] correspondent.”
a journalist critical of the Mugabe regime who lives in London
told the New Journal three weeks ago he was “tickled pink” after hearing Mr Sayle had named his cat after him
But he said he would not join the hunt because he was allergic to cats and suffered from severe hay fever
Wilf Mbanga said: “I am delighted Wilf Mbanga has been found
With world debate focused on the outcome of the Zimbabwean elections and the reinstatement of Robert Mugabe as leader
Mr Mbanga appeared on the BBC World Service on Saturday
a newsreader also discussed the missing cat named in his honour
Ms Sayle’s wife Linda said: “It’s Lexi’s birthday so this is the best present ever.”
she said: “God knows what he’s been up to – or how he got across the Euston Road
We are all recovering because it has been a very difficult time
We’re all really pleased it’s turned out well.”
(Business in Cameroon) - The social houses built by the State in Mbanga Bakoko
Housing Minister Célestine Ketcha Courtès denounced in a release published on December 20
“It has come to my attention that the Mbanga Bakoko social houses in Douala are leased and subleased at outrageous costs,” the government official wrote
She insisted that such practice likely to undermine the Head of State’s efforts to provide decent and affordable houses to every Cameroonian would not be tolerated
the contracts signed by buyers prohibit them from renting or subletting those social houses
Anyone caught doing so will be prosecuted and lose ownership of the house acquired
"I recently instructed my teams to investigate the rumor
establish facts and sanction in accordance with the rules in force," Célestine Ketcha Courtès added in her release
This denunciation comes over a year after Ahmadou Sardaouna
director-general of Cameroon Real Estate Corporation (SIC) informed about similar situations
during a campaign launched in September 2020
to identify tenants of houses managed by the SIC
it appeared that over 50% of those living in the Mbanga Bakoko social houses had no contracts with the state real estate corporation
"This shows that the state has been plundered by many people
This is why we want the law to be enforced,” he concluded
"We met with some subtenants concerned about this irregularity
We worked with them through a commission we set up and validated some cases
We allowed some others two months to register with the commission
we will take legal actions and drive them out of our homes,” he added
the government has launched a ten-year construction program to build 56 condominiums
only 33 were effectively built consisting of 660 apartments.
(Business in Cameroon) - Some of the 3,000 employees of Société des plantations de Mbanga (SPM)
an agro-industrial factory which produces the banana dessert in the Moungo department
2014 before the offices of the Directorate General of the company in Douala
The workers are demanding the payment of 15 months of back pay
the agro-industrial company has been virtually at a standstill
only the administrative personnel continue to work two or three days per week
This is due to the cash flow tensions that the company has been experiencing for at least two years
difficulties have finally led to a halt in production and banana exports
The agro-industrial company has been very criticised by civil society
the people and local elites such as the late Lapiro from Mbanga
who was imprisoned officially for participating in the pillaging of the SPM in February 2008 (he always considered this case to be the settling of a score orchestrated by the SPM)
The company is generally accused of exploitation and especially for not paying its taxes thanks to certain privileges with some local authorities
These accusations have been picked-up and amplified by Paul Eric Kingué
(localities in which SPM also has banana plantations) currently incarcerated for misuse of public funds and always saw the hand of the SPM behind its legal woes
“All the societies which produce bananas in the localities of Njombe-Penja make 100 billion FCFA in sales per annum and employees between 8,000 and 10,000 persons whose salaries do not pass 200 million FCFA per annum,” he has decried in numerous open letters written from his prison cell
After these claims and a documentary broadcast last year by France 2 on the slave working conditions on Moungo banana plantations
a head of the France-Cameroon Chamber of Commerce had announced at its last RSE meeting held by the Competitiveness Committee in Yaoundé
that the SPM bananas had been boycotted on the Rungis market in France which is one of the major fruit markets in Europe
this information has not been confirmed by the Rungis press relations officer
Touching story of 'Wilf Mbanga' is told on Bloomsbury comedian's Radio 4 show
Saturday, 2nd December 2017 — By Tom Foot
ALEXEI Sayle talked about the Extra’s role in reuniting him with his lost cat
on his popular BBC 4 radio show last night (Thursday)
Named after a political exile from Zimbabwe
the massive Maine Coone was given to Alexei by the Today programme’s John Humphrys after it turned up in the garden and would not leave
He was lost for three weeks in 2013 and was found
after an appeal by the Extra and our stablemate
said: “It’s my last show and I’m going to talk about Wilf Mbanga
one of Wilf and one of the real Wilf Mbanga
You found out the real Wilf was living in London and got in touch with him about it.”
the real Mr Mbanga said he was “tickled pink” to know that Mr Sayle had named his cat after him but would not join the hunt because he was allergic to cat hair
He has featured in the press this week following the collapse of the Robert Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe
He has written about how he plans to return to his homeland and visit his mother’s grave for the first time
Mr Sayle said: “That part of things is a coincidence really
But I do feel a sense of parental pride when I see an article by Wilf
I feel like my Wilf wrote it.” Wilf is no longer allowed outside because “he really doesn’t know where he is”
Mr Sayle’s Imaginary Sandwich Bar show is available on iPlayer

THIS week we induct only the second ever animal to feature in the Character slot by remembering the runaway pussycat Wilf Mbanga
If you think that’s an unusual name for a pet
then know that he belonged to Alexei Sayle
the comedian who 10 years ago this month used our pages to issue a “have you seen my cat” appeal
The big stripey Maine Coone cat – see picture for proof on bigness and stripiness – had gone missing from his Bloomsbury home
originally been found as a stray by John Humphrys
the former BBC newscaster and Mastermind host
and then handed on to Mr Sayle – who explained: “John is not an animal lover so we went around and picked him up.”
The real Wilf Mbanga is a campaigning newspaper editor who fled Zimbabwe after being targeted by Robert Mugabe
A family in Primrose Hill had found him and
Wilf Mbanga (the cat) had managed to cross the Euston Road
the Extra had phoned Wilf Mbanga (the journalist) and told him that a cat named after him was missing and we were helping to lead the search
He was rather touched that somebody had given his name to a cat
But he then drew breath and explained drily that he could not help on the ground as… he was allergic to cats
Now retired and living in Mauritius Mbanga
said the removal of Mugabe from power had opened the way for him to return safely to the country of his birth
He will arrive on the British Airways flight from Johannesburg at 1105 today for a brief visit
Wish you all the best and thank you for all you have done for Zimbabwe
