In a second public letter released today, April 18, the club disclosed that it had held discussions with representatives of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), but the talks ended in failure. While the initial letter expressed the club’s willingness to engage in dialogue with the federation to resolve the conflict
this new update paints a different picture of the supposed negotiation
Bamboutos accused the Fecafoot of attempting to manipulate public opinion by claiming that the federation tried to pay 8 million FCFA to motorcyclists commonly known as “benskineurs” to disrupt public order in order to put pressure on the club’s management
the club’s leadership has reiterated its decision to pull out of the competition unless a meaningful and plausible agreement is reached
This latest development has shaken the local football community
with fans and analysts now anxiously awaiting an official response from Fecafoot regarding the serious allegations

and family members at open casket viewing in Pa Jean’s old house
Close family members dressed in gold and orange traditional clothing
Pierre and I made an unplanned trip back to his home village of Baligham
and the red clay mud on the road to Baligham village
my welcome by the family and village brought tears to my eyes
More people than I can count took my hand and said
We hope you are good.” A true homecoming
Most of these people speak little English or French–a local dialect is the primary language and totally unintelligible to me
the widow and close family members of the deceased are never left alone during the first weeks and months following the death
That I had accompanied Pierre home solidified last year’s initiation into the family
the decision to accompany Pierre was instinct: how could I let him–a son to me–travel alone for two days when he was so deeply grieving his father’s passing
Pa Jean’s body had been held in a morgue in Mbouda so that the funeral could be delayed until Pierre arrived
Several cars and motorbikes followed the hearse on the drive into the village
signs announcing Pa Jean’s death and funeral were placed at forks
Our first stop was to see the village chief
The Chief of Baligham village in his courtyard
playing with his young child; the other man is the Chief’s assistant
the pointed metal roof indicates a high position in the community
The chief had asked that Pierre and his eldest brother
Pa Jean was a respected elder in the village and
a man who had believed in educating all children
had often found a way to sew for village children who were too poor to buy the required school uniforms
Pierre had warned me that there might be 1,000 people at the gathering
I estimated somewhere close to that number on funeral day; and there were hundreds on the following day
People fill the family compound on funeral day
Note the blue and white t-shirt on the woman at far right
These were designed as a tribute to Pa Jean by Pierre’s younger brother
There was very little in the way of a formal service
The coffin was set up in Pa Jean’s old mud brick house and close family members stood nearby as hundreds of people filed past the open casket
the casket was closed and brought outside where a prominent family member and religious leader said a few words
Pierre is just to his right holding a portrait of his father
Close family members all dressed in the burnt orange traditional clothing
PIerre spends time with nieces and nephews
Tradition in the village calls for burial immediately adjacent to the dwelling place
men dug a deep hole right in front of Pa Jean’s old house and then buried the casket
Casket about to be lowered into grave dug beside Pa Jean’s front door
Note t-shirts made to honor Pa Jean at his funeral
There were brief interludes of what seemed like spontaneous singing and dancing
men and women sing and dance a mourning song
Among the most moving moments for me was watching Pierre’s mother
stand up every so often and begin singing and dancing what I intuited was an expression of mourning
Other women always stood with her–never letting her feel alone in her grief
children–like children everywhere–found a way to be a part of my video
members of the family gathered at their late grandfather’s home to honor their ancestor and share more remembrances and food
and some of his siblings gather at their late grandfather’s home
Pierre and his mother (seated on ground) in front of her house
I took a plane back to JFK that night; Pierre stayed on to spend more time with family and friends before returning to the north country later this summer
Most of the cargo space beneath the bus was filled with bags of produce like those shown here
People transport produce to Douala to sell at street markets there
So many unfinished construction projects in Cameroon–this one

If you missed the multi-media story Brit Hanson and I collaborated on last year after my first trip to Cameroon
you’ll find in it more about Pierre and how I came to be Mama Ellen to him
We’re very proud that the piece was recognized with a national Gabriel Award

The federation pressed further stating that the reasons advanced by Bamboutos FC to justify their withdrawal from the MTN Elite One Championship are unfounded
as they accused the club’s management of attempting to sabotage ongoing reforms aimed at restructuring and developing Cameroonian football
FECAFOOT explained that all eligible clubs in the MTN Elite One and Two championships have regularly received state subsidies
however Bamboutos FC is yet to receive hers due to documents they are to submit which are proof required for the payment of players’ salaries needed to finalize their transfer order
FECAFOOT’s President reassured the football community of their commitment to continue with their reform and modernization agenda for Cameroonian football
Bamboutos of Mbouda won a first trophy worth note against Cotonsport of Garoua
in Cameroon's Super Cup played on Saturday
The trophy was being played for the first time in 3 years after recess
with Stade Renard emerging victorious over UMS the last time the trophy was played
For a team that pride's itself as the most popular in the country in terms of her fan base
as the Mangwa Boys gulped down defeat to Cotonsport in the Cameroon Cup final played some three weeks ago
In the presence of Africafa's most decorated player now turned FECAFOOT boss
'Les Rythmeurs' completely illuminated the night
The trophy was presented at the start by Indomitable Lions coach
Rigobert Song just before serious business began at a near-full house in the kouekong Omnisport Stadium
Ina Ngassa kept faith in goalkeeper Leonel Kibyen between the sticks despite his howler that cost the team the game in the Cameroon cup final
Atsiga Nyegue carelessly attempted a back flick to Che Malone
which was latched upon and struck home by Eugene Enjenguele
Cotonsport looked rattled and lost the ball on numerous occasions
trying to play their way out from the back
The Cotonnites however settled towards the half hour mark
but it was Bamboutos that had more clear cut chances
Koupit Mani hit the side netting after a free flowing attack from Bamboutos in added on time towards the end of the first half
and goalkeeper Nyeck was a happy man seeing the ball hit the wrong side of the net
Bamboutos resorted to the dark arts and game management
and stopping any attempt of free flowing football
Goalkeeper Kibyen didn't take any chances and he looked like a man who really wanted to redeem himself after defeat in the Cameroon cup final
The former U23 Lions keeper pulled a superb save at the end of the game
matching Komo Atangana's header with great reflexes
with these set of Bamboutos FC players making history
Cotonsport will start their Elite One campaign midweek
while Bamboutos already started on October 16 with a win against YOSA in group B

almost had her education terminated in primary school for want of a birth certificate
Thanks largely to her dogged determination while still in elementary and secondary school
Growing up out of her home village with an illiterate aunt in Mbouda
Florence’s education almost ended prematurely after primary school for want of a birth certificate
“I discovered that I had misplaced my birth certificate when I was about to register the entrance examination into secondary school and the “Cerftificat d’etudes primaires” CEP (the Francophone equivalent of the First School Leaving Certificate
“The school authorities sent word to my aunt to accompany me to the Mayor’s office to get a new birth certificate
saying she didn’t want any problem with the authorities!” Florence recollected with a tone of regret
my education looked set to end after elementary school,” Florence remembered with a tinge of scare
Florence’s aunt did not see the importance of owning a birth certificate
It was then left to the little girl of less than 10 years to take her destiny into her hands
while the huge risk of ending six years of elementary education without sitting certificate examinations stared her in the face
I still had a photocopy of the misplaced birth certificate
The school directed me to the Mbouda Mayor’s office where a certified-true copy of the birth certificate was issued to me
I didn’t bother to complete the process and used it in registering the entrance examination into secondary school and the CEP
Still without the assistance of my aunt,” Florence said
she passed and went to secondary school - still in Mbouda
But Florence’s birth certificate woes were to haunt her again in fourth year of secondary school
Naively thinking that she had resolved the problem in primary school
she promptly included the certified-true copy of the birth certificate as part of registration papers for the “Brevet d'études du premier cycle,” BEPC (Junior Cambridge or Junior Secondary Certificate) examination
the school authorities said she did not have a birth certificate
That the certified-true copy of birth certificate she had could not take the place of the original
Florence was then advised to take the document to the Mbouda Magistrate’s Court for a special authorisation to be given to Mbouda Mayor’s office to issue her another birth certificate
explaining that she did not want anything to do with the authorities
I had to go from one office to another until a new birth certificate was issued me
I have been the proud owner of a birth certificate because I was determined to do so
my education would have ended abruptly after elementary school
And I will not be a journalist today,” Florence M

The information was made known in a letter addressed to the President of FECAFOOT and made public on April 14
where the club expressed deep frustration over what it described as a systematic marginalization and administrative failure within Cameroonian football governance
A shocking development that is causing confusion in the Cameroon football community
the decision to pull out is rooted in multiple grievances
notably financial neglect and persistent bias in officiating
The club equally made shocking revelation that has left Cameroonian football fans in shock which is the fact that it has not received the several financial rewards owed by the federation
Bamboutos FC highlighted the absence of the 50% share from gate fees
which the club claims have not been remitted as per agreement
The club also alleges a well-coordinated scheme aimed at sabotaging its progress
pointing fingers at FECAFOOT officials and referees for recurrent decisions that have directly impacted the outcomes of its matches
“All our appeals to the federation have either been ignored or responded to with unproductive measures,” the letter states
Bamboutos FC views its withdrawal as a necessary act of protest against what it calls “a path of self-destruction” for Cameroonian football
The club’s leadership maintains that its commitment to the growth and promotion of football remains strong
but that the current climate makes continued participation untenable
With this latest development that is yet another sign of ongoing tensions within the football federation
it is increasingly becoming aware that something has to be done and the Fecafoot has to quickly address the situation
