(Business in Cameroon) - Lyrebird Capital Company Limited (LCCL) will no longer receive 400,000 hectares for industrial cassava production in Nanga-Eboko
The presidency has blocked the process of acquiring this land
according to a confidential letter from Minister of Domains
"Based on the information from the letter dated April 5
from the Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Presidency
I inform you that following high-level instructions
the terms of my correspondence from December 12
granting you a special waiver for a provisional concession on approximately 400,000 hectares in Nanga-Eboko have been retracted," Eyébé Ayissi wrote
This government decision comes after the project was revealed on March 27
the prefect of the Haute Sanaga department
and municipal leaders from Nanga-Eboko and Minta to a meeting on April 2
to discuss the cassava project and the special waivers granted to LCCL
The leaked letter from Eyébé Ayissi raised concerns about the company's legitimacy and its lack of public recognition
The project sparked public outrage due to the vast land area intended for LCCL
and traditional authorities of Nanga-Eboko
it is unacceptable to approve a project that cedes 400,000 hectares of our 700,000-hectare district to a fictitious or any company
The people are closely watching the outcomes of the April 2 meeting
Social peace is a hallmark of this administrative unit."
The government's reversal aims to prevent public unrest and opposition from environmental NGOs
such as Neo Industry's cocoa project in the South Region and Herakles Farms' oil palm project in the South-West Region
highlighted the local population's determination to protect their land with the help of international NGOs
Neo Industry’s provisional concession of 26,000 hectares was canceled in 2021 after a five-year struggle
and Herakles Farms abandoned its 20,000-hectare palm oil project due to NGO pressure
the Lyrebird project involved a land area twenty times larger

and referencing the findings of an investigative mission conducted on November 22
which confirmed the traditional authorities' consent for the project
Minister Eyebe Ayissi expressed his preliminary agreement
He noted this consent is for the provisional concession procedure requested on a national land parcel of approximately 400,000 hectares

sharing the full name of Lyrebird Capital Company Limited involved in the Cameroonian project
but no direct connection to Jean Baptiste Nganda has been established
Nganda Jean Baptiste has a notable background in agriculture in the region
having served as a regional delegate of the Chamber of Agriculture for the Center and later as the departmental president of the National Association of Cocoa and Coffee Producers (ANPCC) in 2012
In an interview five years ago with Agri TV
he discussed a large-scale cassava production project with partners
mentioning that his cooperative controls 25,000 hectares and the industrial project could generate 10,000 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs
This revelation about the cassava production project
recalls past controversies over industrial projects by Neo Industry (cacao) in the Southern region and Herakles Farms (palm oil) in the Southwest region
The former's temporary concession of 26,000 hectares was canceled in 2021 after a five-year struggle between the community and the state
while the latter withdrew under pressure from environmental NGOs and advocacy for local community interests after starting its palm oil plantations in the Southwest region
based on a 20,000-hectare concession from the State of Cameroon
The current project involves an area 20 times larger
