Nanaimo-Ladysmith constituents had factors like Trump and strategic voting in mind as they went to the polls earlier this week
Tamara Kronis of the Conservatives won the riding with 26,081 votes
Michelle Corfield representing the Liberals received 20,693 (27.9 per cent); Lisa Marie Barron of the New Democratic Party saw 13,591 (18.3 per cent); Paul Manly of the Greens 13,486 (18.2 per cent) and Stephen Welton of the People's Party of Canada received 294 votes (0.4 per cent).
Tariff and annexation talk from President Trump and the United States were hot election topics and David Livingstone
a Vancouver Island University political studies professor
said while Nanaimo-Ladysmith was previously NDP territory
allegiances may have changed due to that threat
He pointed to comments from Barron at the all-candidates' forum at VIU the week before the election
"She said the thing she consistently heard [while] door-knocking was
‘What do we have to do to stop the Conservatives from winning?' So there seemed to be not so much of
but ‘Who are we voting against?' So there was definitely that strategic voting idea," said Livingstone
The Conservative Party's promises to address affordability and other aspects of the economy
"What's interesting is to see a younger generation starting to drift towards the Conservatives
"But I think that signals to me that the message is getting through to those individuals who are very worried about what jobs they're going to get in the future and how secure those jobs are
That is resonating with young people like it's not resonated before … the Conservatives
have done a pretty good job speaking to those issues."
a perception that the Conservatives didn't sufficiently distance themselves from U.S
Republicans was detrimental federally
who said the Tories instead seemed to continue to push the policies that had served them well in the election's lead-up
The prof suggested that Liberal leader Mark Carney presented himself well during the campaign
and may have benefited from exceeding some people's expectations
"I think a lot of people thought a guy that [has] lots of other experience
and he came across as competent and unflustered," said Livingstone
"His experience on the world stage seemed to help … I think people are also evaluating who is best to confront Trump. They were watching the demeanour of these two individuals and I think it seemed to a lot of people that Carney seemed to appear very prime ministerial very quickly."
The prof said he couldn't say whether the Greens and NDP siphoned votes from each other, but did note that partway through the campaign
the NDP seemingly pivoted to a strategy with messaging stating "Here on the Island
we vote NDP to stop the Conservatives," but it wasn't enough
they were campaigning on the goal of vote-splitting,” said Livingstone
"What's interesting is that it seemed that the people that may have normally voted for the NDP decided to park their vote with the Liberals … so we ended up with gains for the Liberals and gains for the Conservatives and the NDP losing quite a few seats."
Voter turnout in Nanaimo-Ladysmith was 72.3 per cent
and Livingstone felt high voter turnout had everything to do with the U.S
is Trump and rise of this new nationalism in Canada … There was an emotional uplift about Canada [meaning] something and that drove people to be very interested in this election," he said
"They could see it as a as a vital election about who's going to take us through this next very difficult few years."

AACC students who admitted in a survey that they use artificial intelligence apps to help them with their schoolwork said they are “very confident” that they are not violating the college’s academic integrity policies
In a March survey of more than 300 students by AACC’s Center for the Stuy of Local Issues
students said their most frequent use of AI is to brainstorm ideas and to check their grammar and spelling
said a surprising finding of the survey is that 33% of the students said they have never used AI tools
More than 50% said they find AI helpful with schoolwork and 12% said it is not useful
“My take is that we’re still in an early spot in students’ appreciation for what AI can and can’t do or shouldn’t do,” Nataf said
trying to figure out how much they should use it without either on the one hand
violating policies about academic integrity
using it … so that they can bounce ideas off of it.”
some students said using the tool in that way could cheat them out of their education
“I believe that the whole point of higher education places such as AACC are there to help an individual to learn how to think on their own as well as teaching them the tools to document those thoughts,” one student wrote in the segment for anonymous notes
“By introducing AI into assignments for higher education institutions
I believe that is defeating their purpose.”
AI seems to undermine the intellectual and creative process.”
some in the poll said they ask AI for help understanding concepts and textbook readings and to check their work or create outlines for essays and presentations

Florida House District 84 incumbent Dana Trabulsy beat Democratic challenger Andi Poli to win her third term in office
Trabulsy will continue to represent most of St. Lucie County, including Fort Pierce and part of Port St. Lucie
She first won as a political newcomer in 2020 after she turned the seat from blue to red and was reelected in 2022
Trabulsy is a Tampa native who grew up near Atlanta
and she first moved to Fort Pierce in 1991
her background was in marketing and owning an online advertising firm
Florida elections results: Complete but unofficial returns
Indian River County: Complete but unofficial elections results
St. Lucie County: Complete but unofficial elections results
When Trabulsy reflects on her time in office
one of her crowning achievements is a bill regarding inmate medical care for St
The law caps the amount the county pays when inmates receive medical care at outside hospitals
She believes this bill could be her legacy if it sets a precedent for the state
Trabulsy said in a pre-election interview with TCPalm
the county could have at least $11 million to be spent elsewhere starting this year
Another top issue for Trabulsy is education
One area she focused on in her previous terms were chronic absenteeism
Some schools have a 68% rate of kids missing more than 10% of school
she plans to direct time and resources toward finding out why so many students aren't in the classroom
Also included in her education agenda is school safety. After she toured Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, she worked on a school safety bill to address things like unlocked doors and authorizing more guardian programs
“These simple best practices being put into law

Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information

She speaks with Vonnie Quinn on "Bloomberg Markets." (Source: Bloomberg)
Salem Lakes has seen some dramatic changes in the last two years from the spring election of 2023. Four incumbents were defeated in their bid for re-election
the new trustees ushered in the change they promised
Numerous employees left for a variety of reasons after improper conduct was discovered. The new board was forced to take immediate action on a plethora of problems
Internal and external investigations took place that brought forth new employees
and procedures to safeguard against unfair targeting
many changes have taken place that have allowed the village to be modernized and function more effectively
during all of the change that was taking place
trustee Kelly Sweeting passed away battling cancer
she endorsed now Pete Poli to take her place on the board
is trying to figure out a new direction for the village
Some people are worried about this because with change there is always a step into the unknown
Change is however necessary in the pursuit of progress
That does not mean change is always productive though
a well-informed board and active citizen body is the most effective way to direct that change in a manner in accordance with Salem Lakes’ values
That is why you need someone like Trustee Barhyte to be re-elected because he has been a Salem Lakes resident for his entire life
it is imperative that someone like Trustee Poli (resident for decades) continues to ask probing questions and challenge staff on the important issues
Trustee Barhyte too is not afraid to question where funds are being directed and if the village is operating in a proper manner
Those two notably were the board members who have given the most push back by raising significant questions and concerns in the budget workshop
Notice where Pete Poli and Bill Barhyte are sitting during budget talks
their push back was evident and fostered debate over the proper allocation of village funds
but that is definitely not true for the majority of village expenditures
The reality is the village needs to operate more frugally where it is feasible to do so
Salem Lakes will be asking for a referendum or borrowing money to keep its head above the water
Poli and Barhyte are true guardians to taxpayers’ funds
They do not just rubber stamp additional expenditures. Does any voter want their elected officials to just rubber stamp policies and expenditures without asking questions
You might as well let unelected bureaucrats make all of the decisions
That is why it is imperative Poli and Barhyte are elected to take two out of the three available board seats
but we do not know how those candidates would govern
they could elect candidates that could worsen the village’s financial situation
To fight back against over spending the village needs trustees with a backbone that are willing to push back on unresponsible financial plans
Any candidate or board member that says Pete Poli or Bill Barhyte ask too many questions are part of the problem
It has become clear that Trustee Hopkins and Trustee Gandt
are more willing to trust the villages staff to lead Salem Lakes in the right direction
This doesn’t infer that the staff is doing anything wrong
it was done in the past that had led to so many problems in the Village
I’ve heard the statement too many times to count “I didn’t know that was going on” This is why you need a board to ask questions
not that you don’t trust your employee’s but they may be taking an approach you don’t agree with
finding out after the fact ,is sometimes difficult to undo
The board is elected and expected to ask question for their constituents
Without the common-sense approach that Pete Poli and Bill Barhyte seek
we could be right back to square one with another crisis
Poli and Barhyte and many other board members have asked for the Agenda by Wednesday before the meeting
so that they have time to research the issues. Currently they receive the agenda at 3.00pm Friday before the meeting on Monday. This doesn’t allow enough time for members of the board to ask staff about their questions and concerns which has to happen on Monday. In many cases their question(s) isn’t answered until the board meeting
certain members of the board are willing to go with staffs’ recommendation
then get upset when other board members have questions
Certain board members like Poli and Barhyte want answers before they vote
at the last board meeting Poli and Barhyte wanted questions answered about Flock camera’s
yes this is a data collection camera that shares data nationwide. This is not a camera on somebody’s business
this collects and store’s data for law enforcement nationwide and you must trust a private company with your data. Nobody wants to hinder law enforcement
But there are legitimate 4th amendment rights concerns
Young and Faber had concerns with and want to look into it further
Now we have two board members saying Poli and Barhyte are Anti Police
beyond stupid. Watch the meeting on March 10th and you decide
if a budget amendment was needed to pay more than what was appropriated in the budget
the Village was purchasing a special cutter for the excavator which Poli and Barhyte questioned whether this piece equipment was the right piece of equipment for this machine
questions about hydraulic flow requirements and safety were asked
a few members of the board got upset again because they just want to vote
no questions asked. What I find interesting
is that Poli and Barhyte pushed back on this equipment in a previous meeting which forced the Village to get multiple bids that saved the Village about 4 grand on a 25k purchase,” hmm” asking questions saved the Village money. Going back to asking no questions can’t be the future of this Village
The questions Poli and Barhyte asked at the last meeting upset two board members so much
they are actively campaigning against these two board members
it not hard to figure out what these members of the board want
did a lot of rubber stamping on important issues regarding businesses and residents
The old board allowed the employees rule without any real supervision
That led to significant issues throughout the village with property owners
When the village employees had more control
it was just easier to say “no” or to demand unreasonable requirements before moving forward
everyone knows this can be a trend in government
Trustee Poli and Trustee Barhyte are the opposite of “no.” They want to help create a path towards telling residents
and taxpayers “yes” when it is reasonable to do so.
The can of the village’s financial woes cannot be kicked down the road
Kicking the can down the road is how we ended up where we are now
Now is not the time to change up the board
Trustee Barhyte has only served one term and Trustee Poli has only served half a term
They have done a good job so far and should be given more time to continue fostering a better future for the village
Monumental progress does not happen overnight
but re-electing them is a step in the right direction
Pete Poli in particular has set additional time aside to help the village avoid a disastrous sewer project that could have cost the citizens an additional $5-10 million
For that alone he deserves to win his bid for village trustee
Has any other trustee accomplished anything else so monumental
If the wrong candidates are elected the progress that has been achieved could be lost
With Pete Poli and Bill Barhyte Salem Lakes can know that will not happen
Pete Poli in this photo is getting talked down to by an old board member asking why they should listen to him
This did not deter his efforts as he pushed back and ultimately was proven right saving the village millions of dollars! When board members are not open minded to others’ views wasteful spending can occur
The village truly owes Trustee Poli a huge thank you
Pete Poli and Amanda Nedweski at the village hall
Bill Barhyte listening to the facts so he can ask the important questions
Something some of the board members think is not necessary
does the board really want to go backwards? Vote Bill Barhyte and protect Salem Lakes
Trustee Poli has also taken time to become a member on the newly formed Economic Development Committee or “EDC” for short
His vast experience in construction and sewer development will undoubtedly be of great value
His only goal is to try and persuade the board on effective changes the citizens want
it appears this committee is not currently loved by the village staff
The EDC will operate based on what the taxpayers want
Strong leadership will be required and Pete Poli will be up to the task
Trustee Poli and Trustee Barhyte will do the right thing for the citizens
Those that say they have an agenda are right
Their agenda is to protect the taxpayers from unwanted progress and stop tax hikes
then by all means vote against Pete Poli and Bill Barhyte
then it is common sense to support these strong proven leaders as trustees as they have shown themselves to be for the betterment of Salem Lakes
Who is the best choice for the third trustee should be left up to the voters
Salem Lakes residents should do their homework and decide
for the future of Salem Lakes to be bright it is imperative that Bill Barhyte and Pete Poli are re-elected on April 1st
Please remember to vote and tell your friends and family in Salem Lakes to vote as well

Here are the responses I received from Pete Poli and Bill Barhyte:
AGE: 52
EDUCATION: College of Lake County – Associate Degree Building Construction Technology
and excavating – currently own my own business
PAST/ CURRENT PUBLIC OFFICES HELD: past Chairperson Village of Salem Lakes Zoning Board of Appeals
current member of the Village of Salem Lakes Economic Development Committee
PROFESSIONAL/ NONPROFIT MEMBERSHIPS: past president Northern Illinois Conservation Club
past president of the Racine Kenosha Beekeepers Association
Why am I thebest candidate for Salem Lakes Trustee
I answered the call when the Village was looking for a new Chairperson to lead the Board of Appeals
Then I stepped up to serve the remaining term of Kelly Sweeting
lead the effort along with the Village president to create a more fair and appropriate property maintenance ordinance and to weed out lawfare/weaponization of the previous version of the property maintenance ordinance
I am one of a few board members that have worked hard to attempt to keep spending under control. Given the opportunity I would be honored to continue to serve my community as Village Trustee
I am running for Village Trustee because I believe it is important to be of public service
and to represent the citizens with honesty and integrity
I have a strong background in public sewer collection
These experiences are beneficial in leading the village now and into the future
This experience helped the Village save millions on the Yaws/Valmar project. I’m glad
I was there to serve at the right time for the Village
There is no question we need affordable housing and there are potential changes/updates that can be made to the village ordinances which could help make starter homes more affordable to young families. Young families will hopefully help support our declining school enrollment numbers. These numbers affect the supported cost from the state
there are existing non-conforming lots that have been previously platted in the town that the village could alter the ordinances to make these lots conforming which would potentially encourage new single-family homes to be built on these lots
We also can create a Planned Unit Development in given area that will support one area but not the entire village with changes. I don’t believe in sweeping changes
instead I am in favor of more of an individual area approach that the residents will support
What is the best way to encourage development in our community? Because of this question
I stepped forward to serve on the Economic Development Committee
I hope to offer guidance with my life experiences and skill sets. I want to protect our community from unwanted development that won’t necessarily make our quality of life any better. Keeping taxes low is very important to me
but our quality of life is also important. Let’s consider what will be best for Salem Lakes together
I’m all ears to what my constituents want and need. I would encourage all residents and business owners to get involved
it’s our community. I’m very lucky to be serving on a committee that has very similar views
as a committee member I will try to bring to fruition our residents requests
I intend to put more weight on what our residents are asking for before any outsider.
voting record related to budget control and accountability
and my desire to continue to represent the village residents by applying common sense and fiscal responsibility
I am the candidate best suited for Salem Lakes Village Trustee
Find more out about Peter Poli at http: www.keepsalemlakesboard.com
I have been part of the Salem Lakes Community for my entire life
I have been married for 41 years and has four children and five grandchildren
I have always given back to his country and community through public service
I also have spent 41 years as a Volunteer/Paid-on-Call Fireman at the Trevor/Salem Lakes Fire Department as a Lieutenant
I was elected to the Trevor/Wilmot Consolidated School District Board for approximately 25 years
I was also on the Salem Township Parks Board for 20 years
I serve the Village as a trustee and with your support will continue to support the Village with another term as your Trustee
Why am I the best candidate for Salem Lakes Trustee?
I believe I am the best candidate for several reasons. I have served my country and my community always putting others in front of me at many levels. Whether my Military service
Parks board service and most recently a Trustee board member of the Village of Salem Lakes. I’m a people person
and I’m driven by offering help where I can. I truly care about my community and want to serve
to make my constituent’s lives better. I clearly have the experience and the knowledge to best serve our community and would be honored to serve another term as your Village trustee. The change I want is the change residents want
I have no agenda; I just want to find common ground and protect our community
I will strive to operate as frugal as the Village can and still offer the services they need and hopefully improve residents’ quality of life in our community
I’m running again because there is more work to do. The Village has had many changes in the last two years
but we must be very aware of our budget and how it can affect our community. I want the development you want; I’m not in favor of mass development in our community; I love the country-rural feel
I feel this is what makes our community unique and special. I will be the voice of common sense on all issues
I’m very committed to the Fire Department and helping our department members lead effective change
I want to help where I can. Ems and the Fire Department needs to be respected and admired by residents and other community Fire departments; we can do this again
we need to make our Public Works Department be the envy to our community
our citizens are happy. We need to look at ways to fix our roads and do steps to make them last longer
they are expensive and really put a big dent in our budget. This is critical infrastructure we need to be smart about
to determine how and when they need resurfacing or replacement
I would be in favor of offering my expertise in the starting some type of Capital committee. We have some really exceptional people in our community that could offer their expertise in how we spend money on equipment and the best way to reduce cost on our roads
I believe with our great employees in public works
working with a committee would offer the best chance of operating the public works department in the best way possible. As we have seen with Pete Poli
saving the Village Millions on ONE sewer project
I would like to see that expand to other areas of the Village; we owe it to the taxpayer
A lot of money is spent in the Fire Dept
we should strive to operate at a level that best serves the community and still maintaining a reasonable budget
I think the new EDC committee is a great idea
these committee members have made a commitment to the needs and wants to the residents. Every one of the committee members have lived in our community for decades and I believe they will protect the Village from unwanted development
I would be honor to serve the community for another two years

is that I was considering voting for someone else
It’s always good when people do their own research and make an informed decision
Too bad Gandt and Hopkins weren’t on the chopping block
Hopkin’s hasn’t done shit for Silver lake but bitch about dirt bikes and golf carts
He must stand by his window all day so he can bitch about the kids in the neighbor hood having fun
He sucks as a representative of Silver lake
Maybe this development group can focus on our forgotten little town
Village of Silver Lakes should never have sold our land to those vampires in Salem
Hopkin doesn’t like to be challenged
Both Hopkins and Gandt didn’t listen to the Sheriff on the ATV ordinance
they still rejected the Sheriff’s recommendation not to allow ATVs on the roads
Now I see Hopkin’s and Gandt are upset that someone asked questions about flock cameras the Sheriff is recommending
a few questions over concerns about our 4th Amendment
I’m getting dizzy with the hypocrisy
or anything else that might drive down the road here in Silver Lake
can you please spend your time on real issues in our Silver Lake
I wonder if he has visited any of the local businesses that have opened recently in downtown Silverlake.
I hope you represent Silver Lake better than Hopkins
The new board simply shifted who to target
Still spending like drunken sailors to grow government
Divided government better than a divided people
The goal is to weight the board with more rubber stamping spenders
What do you think is going to happen when you hire a bureaucrat from Illinois
There’s something in the water out there
That’s what happens when you have a bunch of hamlet’s
Lake County Illinois is a nightmare to deal with
they take and give nothing in return except millions of acres of parks
This board is either tying to ruin the village or ignorant
I hear hopkins and gandt are tight with the administrator
They want a police state as well as the administrator
Time to send all three of them back to Illinois
Poli and Barhyte will protect us from these radicals liberals
It didn’t help that their form needed to be printed and sent in
hoping it changed as people requested and it did not
Can’t expect people without access to a printer
I can’t understand these pricks fleeing Illinois
coming here and then trying to replicate what they just left

She then became president of the organization and served three years
Poli said she learned a lot while working candidate forums
she decided to pick a side and went with the party that wanted to uphold democracy
She was unopposed in the Democratic primary in August
She remembered when Florida used to be a welcoming state and said book bans or culture war bills like the “Don’t Say Gay” law aren’t what the state is about
She wants to create jobs locally for climate change mitigation to bring young people back to the area after college because younger generations want to give back in their careers
Since it’s become unaffordable to live in St
her idea is to create starter-home neighborhoods
She would help develop a program at the state level to allow local municipalities to establish the neighborhoods made of homes that can’t be rented or bought by corporations
she would address homeowners insurance because the cost affects everyone
She said the Legislature has written insurance laws in a way that has helped insurance companies but hurt people
“The laws that have been written need to be revised so that people have the power to get their claims paid out
that the premiums that they pay go down a little bit
and that they potentially get insurance in a crisis,” Poli said
It’s nearly financially impossible for a homeowner to sue an insurance company for not paying out claims
so people could have to pay their own legal fees
“Under the circumstances that you can’t afford to rebuild
how are you going to afford to pay for the attorneys’ fees on top of it?” Poli said
“It makes it cost prohibitive to the vast majority of people
which makes it easy for insurance companies to just play the odds.”
Trabulsy voted yes for Senate Bill 2A in 2022 as part of “a rubber stamp Legislature” Republican majority that does as it’s told
When Trabulsy talks about the money she's brought to area
“You have to be incredibly corrupt to get that done in Tallahassee right now,” Poli said
you have to agree to sacrifice the rights and welfare and finances of your constituents because you had to agree to vote for all these terrible things that people don’t like.”
Poli also cited how Trabulsy voted in favor of both abortions bans, voted yes for a school choice bill that strips money from public education, voted for the bathroom vigilante bill and voted for restrictions on gender-affirming care
“Basically everything that people are up in arms about
She turned the District 84 seat from blue to red in 2020 and was reelected in 2022
I feel like I have made a positive impact on our community financially,” Trabulsy said
“I also feel like personally I’ve run some really great legislation.”
Trabulsy was unopposed in the Republican primary after her opponent
His decision came after a meeting between the two candidates
and I have some things I want to finish before I leave,” Trabulsy said
using a similar rate to what state prisons already pay
and could become a model for other counties
That savings means at least $11 million will be reallocated elsewhere in the county budget year after year
“Our taxpayers are still going to have to pay those taxes,” Trabulsy said
“but now that money can be spent more responsibly than to inflated medical costs
and our inmates will still get the same quality care.”
Trabulsy wants to continue her work with children and childhood education
She wants to create a system to identify those students and find out why
She’s worked on a school safety bill every year after she toured Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland
She learned simple things like doors weren't being closed and locked
She also worked on an adoption bill to protect foster children who used to be exploited with their photos online for people to be able to flip through like they’re shopping for puppies
The law required a home study to get a password to view photos of the children
Some companies were mad because their views were down
“This is just a prescription for human trafficking,” Trabulsy said
“If they’re not really prospective parents
they shouldn’t be going through the website.”
A personal victory was the passage of a bill related to post-exposure HIV medication
The drug needed to be taken within 72 hours to be effective
The new law allows pharmacists to administer the drug for short-term use and secures $1 million annually for research at the University of Miami Center for AIDS Research
She was surprised when it passed on the floor with her brother’s name: the John W
“My brother died of HIV almost 30 years ago
so any time that I have the opportunity to advocate in this space I do.”

With his stellar résumé and extensive international experience, Ryan Poli could have written his own ticket to captain any kitchen in the world. Instead, the Chicago native chose Nashville — where he gained local attention and acclaim during his three years at the helm of The Catbird Seat — to open Iggy’s with his brother Matthew Poli
The two took a vacant space on the street level of a former industrial building in Wedgewood-Houston and turned it into a swanky yet approachable trattoria with multiple seating options
including a bar overlooking the busy kitchen
who merges a hands-on approach with a K.I.S.S
culinary ethos that results in a succinct menu regularly refreshed by seasonality
Meals start with an introduction by four or five starters — led by the famous Iggy’s garlic bread — and the entrees are built upon fresh pasta made daily in its own glass-enclosed room
Poli creates elevated executions of Italian home-kitchen standbys like spaghetti pomodoro and rigatoni Bolognese and masterful interpretations of classics like cacio e pepe
His stuffed pastas — tortellini and agnolotti — are otherworldly
Poli regularly posts short cooking demos on the restaurant’s lively Instagram account
A recent one captured over a pot of boiling pasta offers this sage advice: “Here’s the point where everybody asks me how long to cook it
Nashville’s best — and least assuming — chef

Election season is in high gear: Campaign signs litter front yards
texts from candidates blow up phones and in a new class
learning the realities of being a candidate as they go.
taught by social policy analysis lecturer Elizabeth Vann
walks students through running for election
Rather than a readings and lectured-based syllabus
Vann said she wanted to craft an experiential course
“I wanted Rice students in the course to be able to imagine future pathways for themselves,” Vann said
“If they really are interested in working in the space
having personal connections is great.”
Class speakers range from Annise Parker ’78
former White House press secretary and current university trustee
Vann said the first visitors were Rice alumni who ran for office in Texas
and they discussed the motivations behind their candidacies
… These [questions] engage students in the conversation of why they might be interested in running for office,” Vann said
These discussions help students build their own candidate biographies
“[The] candidate biography is a way for them to think about the person who has big ambitions
and they run initially because they’re thinking about what’s next
versus someone who runs because they’re committed to maybe an issue space or a particular community,” Vann said
students work on identifying potential voters and increasing voter turnout
“But he shared with the students early on some regrets he had about how that played out and maybe what he would do differently
This is an opportunity at a sort of high level.”
students have the freedom to make decisions about aspects of their campaign after hearing insights from speakers like Salhotra
“The class design is really unique,” Nina Wallach
“We’ve had a lot of autonomy to decide what we want to run for and our strategies
“The guests that we’ve had have been really cool to learn about why people run for office
what makes a more successful campaign and what it’s like to be in office.”
not all students want to run for office.
“I did think most students would have political ambitions of their own,” Vann said
“I would say fewer than 50% of the class is interested in running for office
The class is a prime opportunity for students interested in working behind the scenes on political campaigns
so they get a sense of the collaborative work that goes on beyond the candidate.
Even if students have no interest in political work, Vann believes students can gain valuable knowledge about elections — and said students in the class are much more likely to recognize the importance of primary elections, races with exceedingly low turnout
“If [students] have zero interest in running [for office]

In statements to the program Tiempo de Juego, Poli Rincón couldn't hide his indignation: "What I just saw hurts my soul..
I find it disgraceful," he stated forcefully on COPE's microphones.
Vinícius Júnior | Getty ImagesRincón's criticism didn't stop at the specific detail of that play. The former player made it clear that attitudes like Vinícius's can't be allowed in a club like Real Madrid
a footballer of Vinícius's caliber must set an example of commitment and effort
The Brazilian was one of the offensive protagonists for Real Madrid in the match...but his behavior in actions like the one pointed out by Poli Rincón has sparked a debate among fans and the white club's environment
Is Vinícius too weak in pressing and alert to other matters?
The truth is that Poli Rincón's anger reflects the feelings of many Madridists
disappointed by the image Vinícius conveyed at certain points
The former footballer publicly called for a change in the Brazilian's attitude if he wants to become a true legend of Real Madrid.
Real Madrid hasn't spared any effort in negotiating a new contract with Vinícius Júnior
The Brazilian has definitively rejected the proposal from Saudi Arabia and is about to renew his bond with the white club
he will surpass Mbappé and have the highest salary on the team
Miguel Martín Talavera has assured on SER that "in the salary scale
Mbappé neither took it nor knew how to take it
and the renewal brings that figure closer to Vinicius."
what they are clear about on SER is that Vinícius Júnior will once again be the figure of Real Madrid in the present and future
Speaking about leadership in the white team
Talavera pointed out: "Kylian Mbappé neither took it nor knew how to take it
and the renewal brings that figure closer to Vinícius."

Georgia Southern University’s Statesboro Campus is a diverse campus with lots of joyous energy
Ranging from the students who skate to class to students who participate in intramural sports for fun
This amazing campus features students from all walks of life
the questions that should be asked are: Do we really know each other
Introducing a familiar face among the students of Statesboro is none other than Natassia Mason
Natassia is a freshman at GSU on the Statesboro campus
majoring in Political Science with a concentration in law in politics
George Anne Staff: “Could you go into detail about your major and the focus of concentration in law revolving around politics?”
it’s more of a study of behaviors within the government
my concentration in law and politics explores more of the judicial branches
and then I’m projected to hopefully go to law school
So that is kind of the reason behind my concentration.”
I am currently part of this program called the “Honors College Global Scholars”
and in the spring of 25 we’re going to Wexford Ireland for six weeks
Georgia Southern has offered so much potential and it’s just very positive
and I feel like I’m learning so much.”
George Anne Staff: “As a freshman coming fresh into college
do you feel Georgia Southern has met your expectations?”
Natassia M.: “100% I feel as though I didn’t have a clear grasp on the college experience
you just don’t know what you don’t have
and I was really hoping for engagement within other students and professors
and I feel like those expectations have really been met
Georgia Southern also offered so many different events on campus
They really convey their want for participation
There’s definitely a blend of people who will come up and approach you first and then people who you have to approach
I think there’s a lot of subtle ways that you can open up communicating.”
George Anne Staff: “Do you have any pets?”
I know what everybody says about Chihuahuas
I am very open to exploring future opportunities with orchestra
I think it’s very difficult to look into the future and see where you can fit time in different areas
I want to continue taking the classes and taking the lessons and then potentially possibly minoring
if that is where I feel most strongly towards.”

As a captain of the Chicago Luvabull dancers in the late 1990s
Natalie Poli gasped for air after performing elaborate dances on the basketball court for Chicago Bulls fans
Poli had danced her whole life – she started at age 3
her answer to "What do you want to be when you grow up?" was "Dance for the Chicago Bulls." She joined both her high school and college dance teams
the feeling of gasping for air on the Bulls' court was familiar
during runs and circuit training with her University of Iowa dance team
she got so out of breath it brought her to tears
21-year-old Poli came off the court huffing and puffing more than ever before
A fellow dancer with asthma had an inhaler
She was told she might have athlete-induced asthma and
She went back to the Luvabulls and the day job she had at a law firm
went back to school to get a master of arts and teaching degree and her professional educators license
Natalie – then 29 – gave Cole a bath
she went to get a diaper from his bookshelf
Natalie crawled into the hallway and shouted for her then-husband
"I think I'm having a stroke!" Natalie said
It was true the couple wasn't sleeping well
Natalie got the phone and punched in the number
planning to ask to speak with the doctor on call
they thought Cole accidentally called them on speed dial
"I need an ambulance," she thought she said
Natalie knew she needed to get her husband's help
She tried to return the cordless phone to its base
but it fell and cracked on the bathroom floor
It was a police officer responding to her 911 call
He handed Natalie a pen and paper and told her to write down what was going on
The officer recognized the signs and symptoms of a stroke
Natalie had lost all feeling on her right side and all speech
EMTs arrived and rushed her to the hospital
meaning that blood flow to her brain had been temporarily blocked
The cause appeared to be a blood clot that traveled from her heart to her brain
she underwent multiple tests to assess her brain and heart function
She had a rare heart defect called atrial septal aneurysm that had been there since birth
People with the condition have extra tissue on the wall between the heart's two upper chambers
It's associated with a higher risk of blood clots and stroke
She also didn't have any permanent damage to her brain
She was only a few months from earning her master's degree
Natalie had a procedure to close the holes in her heart with mesh-like discs
She'd need regular checkups with her cardiologist
She also divorced and remarried; her new husband
Tony had unknowingly watched Natalie dance at Bulls games when he attended them through a police-run charity event
Tony had experience responding to calls for people having a stroke
"It's amazing that Natalie was able to fully recover after having a stroke at such a young age," he said
Natalie dealt with anxiety about having another stroke
"That's something no one should be ashamed of," she said
She used her platform to share her story and educate the public about heart disease
"Natalie is always advocating for people," Tony said
Natalie works as an elementary school principal
She is six classes and a dissertation shy of her doctorate degree in education
She's written a children's book about congenital heart defects and regularly shares her story
She's also a passionate advocate for patients to have resources to allow heart defects to be caught early
"I use my voice because others can't," Natalie said
This is my opportunity to make a difference."

The Government hopes open banking will spur more competition in the banking sector
Open banking is a step closer to gaining scale in New Zealand
with ASB signing a major deal with established payment provider POLi
they’ll be able to authorise payments via their ASB banking apps
The deal is significant because of the sheer number of merchants and government departments
including Air New Zealand and the New Zealand Transport Agency
that use POLi to give customers the option of making payments for free
The alternative is to use another payment provider or credit card
POLi processed 5.5 million transactions worth nearly $2 billion last year
Banks typically don’t like POLi getting people in the habit of sharing their bank details with third parties
fearing that making people comfortable doing so makes them more susceptible to being scammed
banks have been slow to allow financial technology companies to officially plug into their systems using application programming interfaces (APIs) to enable “open banking”
Banks worry this enables fintechs that offer banking services to compete with them
It also means banks have to invest in ensuring the transfer of information required to process transactions
when the Government put real pressure on banks to facilitate open banking to enhance competition in the sector
banks have put high hurdles in front of fintechs seeking partnerships
Innovation and Employment (MBIE) will soon require ANZ
BNZ and Westpac (in the initial instance) to partner with fintechs it accredits
like enabling customers to consolidate their financial information from various institutions in one place
hoped the ASB deal would help inform the standardised terms and conditions being created for the MBIE-administered regime
Commerce Commission and MBIE for pushing banks to get open banking up and running
said the bank wasn’t charging POLi transaction fees for at least the first year of its partnership
The Government wants to cap the fees banks charge fintechs that plug into their systems at 5 cents per transaction
Maclean said this was too low to make it worth ASB’s while charging POLi
Simmonds said the price cap was a gamechanger
as POLi had been quoted uneconomic fees from banks in the past
some of which surpassed the fees POLi charged the merchants who used its service
Simmonds hoped POLi would be able to strike deals with the other major Australian-owned banks before the end of the year
This way more POLi customers would be able to authorise payments from within their banks’ systems
Smaller banks are still working towards readying their systems for open banking
Pinch points to date have included figuring out how to share risk and liability between banks and fintechs
Banks are also mindful of ensuring the transactions made via third parties don’t breach anti-money laundering rules or sanctions

something many members of the cast and creative team are dealing with
Playwright Olavarria shared why she wrote the play
I needed to talk about what is happening to me and so many others
by seeing how unjust this process is and wanting to do something about it
which are obviously things that are on my mind but the truth is I wasn't thinking about that while I wrote
and Chilean immigrant Mona is coming up on her Visa deadline
a Mexican actor and playwright who has more in common with Mona than she might think
Mona tries to navigate her upcoming deadlines
and the 'endless loneliness that comes with being alive'
poses the question: how does it feel when the one thing you want doesn't want you back
The cast features Sophie Morrison (The Banality of Evil/The Brick) as Someone, Poli Olavarria (August: Osage County at Finis Terrae) as Mona, Vincent Rame (Broadway World Award for best performance in the play 9/10) as Vicho, and Lauryn Savela (Hearts Like Planets by Adam Szymkowicz at AADA) as Maggie
The creative/Production Team includes Micah Carlsen (sound design)
Goran Popovich (scenic and properties designer)
The Coffee House Club and the Salmagundi Club will present a reading of A Thousand Shapes by Barrie Kreinik, directed by Caitlin Davies. The performance is set for this month.

Aligned with Boucheron's vision within the Kering group, this initiative champions creativity and responsible innovation while driving positive transformation across the jewelry sector. This new “Kering Generation Award X Jewelry” seeks to recognize visionary talent demonstrating excellence in sustainable design and jewelry-making practices, by building an international community of young students and start-uppers committed to transforming the industry.
Kering, alongside its jewelry brands —Boucheron, Pomellato and Qeelin— and with the scientific coordination of Poli.Design - Politecnico di Milano, will organize an international contest featuring 10 world-renowned universities and academies specializing in jewelry and sustainability, as well as established start-ups in the jewelry sector:
Among all the projects submitted, 4 finalists - 2 for the student’s category and 2 for the start-up category - will be presented to the jury next June 2025 at JCK, one of the world’s largest jewelry industry trade events.
Following this bold initiative, the award invites students and start-ups to reimagine waste as a resource, creating jewelry that turns discarded materials into valuable pieces. This initiative challenges the traditional concept of waste by exploring the potential of creative reuse. Participants are encouraged to design a jewel—whether a single piece or a collection—that transforms waste into something valuable, showcasing the intangible power of creativity.
