South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) has revealed plans to launch fifth freedom flights from Cape Town International (South Africa) via Accra (Ghana) to the United States by the end of 2026 as part of its West African expansion strategy
CEO John Lamola made the announcement during a meeting with Ghana's travel industry and media on April 8
the Ghanaian radio station Joy FM reported
Lamola highlighted Accra's importance as a strategic hub for SAA
"We are evaluating the possibility of starting a route directly between Ghana and Cape Town
as a connector to East Coast of the United States cities
certainly before the end of the next calendar year," he said
but our biggest challenge that we have in SAA
we will want to start flying to the United States East Coast from Accra," he added
SAA currently does not serve the US, but before entering its business rescue process in December 2019 it operated non-stop flights to New York JFK from Johannesburg; and Washington Dulles from Johannesburg via either Accra or Dakar Blaise Diagne International
SAA is also keen to increase its Johannesburg O.R. Tambo-Accra flights from 4x to 7x weekly once the necessary equipment is secured
and discussions with Ghana’s transport minister
have taken place on enhancing connectivity between the two countries
Lamola also said that SAA is financially stable
"We have restructured South African Airways to where it is fairly financially sustainable," he said
noting the airline's mission to reclaim its status as a leading global brand
SAA announced its fleet had grown to 20 aircraft
after it emerged from business rescue with six aircraft in 2021
The airline is rolling out a plan to add five aircraft to its fleet during 2025
Lamola said that the carrier is expanding its fleet while focusing on consolidating its operations
increasing frequencies on existing routes to provide more direct access to key African cities

“We’ve done a murder mystery event for the past few years
and it has always been a success that students love,” Poiroux said
“It is good for students to have a casual night and enjoy an interactive show with their friends.”
SAA Special Events Co-Director Hannah Hoang — a junior journalism major from Amory

“A lot of people are feeling stressed right now
so we wanted to have a fun and free event for students on campus,” Hoang said
“We wanted everyone to have a night of laughs and escape from end of the semester stress.”

but the calendar will soon turn to November
which means we are three weeks away from the end of the NCAA Division III regular season
Considering the DIII teams in Texas are split into three separate conferences
this is an excellent time to discuss how the American Southwest Conference and the Southern Athletic Association will determine who gets its automatic bids should two or three teams end the season tied atop the standings
increasing the likelihood that both teams will claim the SCAC title this year
If the season were to end after last week, Hardin-Simmons would claim the ASC title outright for the second consecutive season and the conference’s automatic bid to the playoffs
But who would be the champion if Mary Hardin-Baylor upsets the Cowboys when they meet again in two weeks in Abilene
the Cowboys and Crusaders would finish 2-0 against both teams
The third tiebreaker is when things get interesting
the ASC’s tiebreaker policy resembles that of most Texas high school football districts
Point differentials determine the automatic bid
and the point differential is capped at a maximum of 21 points
Considering HSU won its first meeting against the Cru by a score of 44-21
UMHB must defeat the Cowboys by at least 21 points when they meet in Abilene
Any victory of less than 21 points by the Cru will result in HSU receiving the ASC’s automatic bid
Should the Crusaders defeat HSU by 21 or more points
the next tiebreaker is the point differential against each team within the conference in descending order
That means ETBU and HPU play a significant role in determining which team earns the automatic bid
UMHB defeated ETBU by 14 in their first meeting and HSU earned a 16-point victory over the Tigers last Saturday
HSU and UMHB were at home for their first game against ETBU and will travel to Marshall for the second meeting against the Tigers
With HSU and UMHB maxing out the point differential in their first meeting against HPU
the ASC’s automatic bid could be determined by who wins and by how many points against ETBU
HSU holds a two-point edge in that tiebreaker
Should the Cowboys and Crusaders remain tied after the first four tiebreakers, ASC Commissioner David Flores will conduct a coin toss to determine who will receive the automatic bid to the playoffs
Before we break down the SAA’s tiebreaker policy
should three teams end the season tied in the standings
it’s important to note that this scenario only occurs if Berry defeats Centre next week and both the Vikings and Trinity beat Millsaps when they meet later in November
including Millsaps defeating Berry or Trinity
will result in Centre claiming the SAA title and automatic bid
with the Colonels owning wins over the Tigers and Majors earlier this season
According to the SAA Operations Manual
the following tiebreakers would determine who receives the automatic bid if Centre
and Trinity are tied at the end of the regular season
each team is awarded two points for each victory against the other conference co-champions
which would result in the teams remaining tied
each team is awarded one point for each win against the other teams in the conference who do not share the title
which would leave the teams tied for the playoff bid
The next tiebreaker considers the team’s overall records
giving the team with the fewest losses the automatic bid
all three teams will end the season with two losses and remain tied in this scenario
the SAA turns to the opponent’s overall record
The team whose opponents have the highest win/loss percentage will earn the conference’s automatic bid to the playoffs
Centre currently holds a slight edge in this category (65.9 percent)
followed by Trinity (64.3 percent) and Berry (62.8 percent)
Berry has the most challenging remaining schedule
Trinity’s remaining opponents are 10-11
while Centre’s remaining foes are a combined 9-12.
The bottom line is that if Berry defeats Centre next week
the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs will be determined by around two percentage points
leaving those teams tied with Trinity at the conclusion of the regular season
then the head-to-head result will determine who receives the playoff bid

which previously sought to form a pan-African airline group with South African Airways
is still keen to explore an MRO partnership with its maintenance subsidiary SAA Technical
In 2021, Kenya Airways and South African Airways (SAA) detailed plans to co-start a pan-African airline group by 2023. However, post-pandemic restructuring at both carriers stalled the project. “I would say, until the end of 2021, we were in pure survival mode,” Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka told Aviation Week Network
Now that Kenya Airways has returned to profitability and its Project Kifaru turnaround plan is 95% complete
Kilavuka sees a strong opportunity to partner with SAA
We want to go one step further and look at their technical [business] because they have a very good technical unit there,” he said
“They have the tools and the personnel to help us really scale up.”
Kenya Airways currently has its own internal maintenance division
where the workload is split roughly 65% for Kenya Airways and 15% for third-party airlines
such as Kenyan cargo carrier Astral Aviation
Through a partnership with SAA Technical (SAAT)
Kilavuka sees potential for Kenya Airways to turn maintenance into “a standalone business unit” and take on additional third-party work
we need tools and space and even more personnel
if we work collaboratively with South African Airways
“We're not working with them at the moment.”
He added that diversification is one of Kenya Airways’ key pillars for business sustainability
That collaboration is one of the many that we actually need,” SAA Technical CEO Wellington Nyuswa said during a recent webinar. “The businesses themselves
but because of their ownership and the laws that apply in each country
Nyuswa said SAAT has “spare capacity” and he sees partnerships as the way forward
SAAT lost a substantial amount of work when SAA radically downsized its fleet
we started with 60% of our revenue coming from third parties and only 40% coming from the airline,” Nyuswa said
but we still have more than 40% coming from third parties.”
Kilavuka is hoping to resume wider strategic partnership talks with SAA imminently
or roll out a strategic cooperation with another African carrier by 2027
The Kenyan government also is ultimately looking to dilute its majority stake and bring in an equity partner to provide capitalization for Kenya Airways’ growth

WINTERSVILLE — The Steubenville Art Association has rescheduled its Jan. 18 Pen and Ink Drawing workshop which will now take place on Saturday.
President Judy Schmidt explained an emergency had caused the class to be postposed. Those interested in participating will now meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Center of Music and Art in Wintersville.
This will be the first workshop of the year, Schmidt said. The class will be led by Debra Kimball.
The cost to attend will be $40 per person.
Anyone who enjoys drawing or is interested in learning more about the workshop, can contact the SAA through its Facebook page prior to class.
Those attending can let officials know through the social media site so the necessary supplies can be prepared.
Schmidt said all are welcome, including non-members.
She then announced she is in the process of applying for a grant from the Ohio Arts Council in order to help support the group throughout the next four years.
Schmidt expressed her appreciation to the council for the two “nice grants” the SAA previously received from the organization.
“I would just like to thank the Ohio Arts Council for making our art shows possible,” she concluded, saying the grant funding has afforded the SAA an opportunity for members to continue showcasing their works to the public and allowing area artists the chance to continue following their dreams.

Kenya Airways (KQ, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta) is exploring a partnership with SAA Technical (SAAT), the maintenance arm of South African Airways
according to Group Managing Director and CEO
Kilavuka disclosed that he sees an opportunity to collaborate with SAA on MRO services
aiming to scale up Kenya Airways' maintenance capabilities and potentially make it a standalone business unit
He said that around 65% of Kenya Airways' internal MRO division currently handles the airline's own maintenance needs, while third-party carriers account for some 15%. The unit services aircraft of airlines such as LAM - Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique, RwandAir, and Kenya's Astral Aviation
Kilavuka believes that partnering with SAA

but for us to grow we need tools and space and even more personnel
So if we work collaboratively with South African Airways
We're not working with them at the moment."
He added that diversification is one of Kenya Airways’ key pillars for business sustainability
SAA Technical CEO Wellington Nyuswa also expressed interest in such a collaboration
noting that SAA's capacity for third-party work had grown post-COVID after downsizing the fleet
That collaboration is one of the many that we actually need," he said
Kilavuka is hoping to resume strategic partnership talks with SAA imminently or roll out strategic cooperation with another African carrier by 2027

South African Airways (SAA) has announced that its pilots have accepted a revised salary and benefits package
effectively ending the work-to-rule industrial action that had been in place
This agreement marks the successful conclusion of the 2024 wage negotiations for the pilots’ bargaining unit
John Lamola expressed satisfaction with the pilots’ decision
“We are pleased to see the pilots recommit to their roles and return to the flight deck
Their resolution aligns with the airline’s best interests
the thousands of customers who depend on SAA to connect them to destinations across South Africa
involved pilots adhering strictly to their contractual obligations without undertaking additional duties
which impacted the airline’s operations
The resolution of this industrial action is seen as a pivotal moment for SAA
as it aims to restore stability and enhance cooperation between management and pilots
While specific details of the revised salary and benefits package have not been publicly disclosed
the agreement is understood to include enhanced salary increments and benefit adjustments that acknowledge the pilots’ contributions while ensuring the airline’s financial sustainability
This development follows previous industrial actions
including a strike in December 2024 that led to the cancellation of flights to destinations such as Perth and São Paulo
The resolution of the current wage negotiations is expected to prevent similar disruptions and support SAA’s ongoing recovery efforts

South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) aims to grow its fleet from 20 to 50 aircraft in the next three years as it shifts from recovery to growth and deepens its regional footprint
We are repositioning and rebuilding the airline to survive on its own together with our strategic partners
We have a five-year corporate plan of going through the renewal and modernisation of our fleet and elevating our customer experience grounded on our African uniqueness
The aim is to have 50 aircraft in the next three years
and we are expanding carefully,” Lamola said at an event with travel trade and cargo industry partners in Lagos
The airline is also consolidating its route network, he said, increasing frequencies and prioritising key markets. "Lagos is not just one piece in our network but a very strategic route," he said
noting that daily flights to Nigeria’s commercial hub are set for March 2026
Nigeria's The Sun and The Guardian newspapers reported
Plans are also afoot to link West Africa directly with Cape Town International in response to market demand
"The future ahead is one of cooperation and partnership," Lamola said
During an earlier travel trade roadshow to Ghana, Lamola revealed plans for fifth freedom flights from Cape Town International via Accra
to the United States by the end of 2026 as part of SAA's West African expansion strategy
The Trinity Tigers kept its hopes for a fourth consecutive Southern Athletic Association championship with a 38-35 overtime victory over the preseason favorite Berry Vikings. Tyler Huettel (McKinney) nailed a 33-yard field goal in the first overtime to start the Tigers celebration
The Tigers will be fans of Berry next week when the Vikings meet Centre in a critical contest for the SAA title. Centre defeated Trinity 24-12 on the first Saturday in October. The Colonels defeated Southwestern 38-28 earlier in the day to remain undefeated against SAA teams
A Centre win at Berry next week would give the Colonels the tiebreaker edge over the following three teams in the standings: Trinity
The contest between the Tigers and Vikings featured nine lead changes
Berry converted a two-point conversion following its first touchdown in the first quarter
and it appeared that decision would be the difference in the contest until BJ Rainey blocked the Viking's extra point attempt after Berry tied the game at 35 with 9:11 remaining in regulation
Huettel nearly sent the Tigers to victory in regulation
but his 57-yard field goal attempt as time expired sailed wide left
the two-time All-American didn’t miss his next opportunity to seal the win
Berry opened the extra session with the ball, but Quenton Joseph (Richmond Foster) intercepted a pass by the Vikings during their second play from scrimmage in overtime
Trinity ran the ball twice for nine yards before sending Huettel on the field on third down and one
Berry’s attempt to ice the senior kicker with a timeout before the kick was for naught
Two of Trinity’s final three contests are on the road
beginning with a trip to Hendrix next week before hosting rival Southwestern
The Tigers conclude the season against Millsaps in a game that could determine who earns a share of the SAA title and possibly the conference’s automatic bid to the playoffs
South Africa's independent corruption watchdog, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), announced it had formally added South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) to a list of state institutions to be investigated on allegations of "serious maladministration
the SIU said President Cyril Ramaphosa had signed amendments to proclamations authorising the unit to expand the scope of its investigations into SAA with the aim of recovering financial losses suffered by the state
R.206 of 2024 substitutes the heading and first paragraph of the original proclamation to "formally add South African Airways as a state institution which will be subjected to an investigation of allegations of serious maladministration
and unlawful conduct in the affairs of these state institutions," the SIU said
ch-aviation has reached out to SAA and the SIU for comment
In March 2024
South Africa's public enterprises parliamentary portfolio committee asked the SIU to investigate the failed sale of 51% of SAA to the Takatso Consortium
This followed complaints from former Department of Public Enterprises director-general Kgathatso Thlakudi
who alleged wrongdoing in the Takatso deal and questioned the valuation of the national airline
In 2021, ch-aviation reported that the SIU was investigating 84 SAA contracts and 44 of its aircraft leases
having unearthed contractual irregularities such as inflated pricing; fronting; conflicts of interest on the part of SAA staff; fictitious vendors
and bank accounts; over-payments; non-delivery; and non-performance
Among the most high-profile cases was when the late SAA chairwoman Dudu Myeni tried to involve a third-party leasing company in a 2015 deal with Airbus
blocked by then finance minister Nhlanhla Nene
known as "Nene Gate," which was also examined by the Zondo Commission on State Capture
Other state-owned entities currently under investigation by the SIU include the South African Broadcasting Corporation
and the South African Council for Educators

South African Airways pilots have accepted a pay and conditions package, ending the industrial action initiated a week ago
Two pilot unions imposed a work-to-rule at the carrier on 19 March after the two sides reached an impasse during salary and benefits talks
But SAA stated on 25 March that the pilots had “accepted” the package
“effectively concluding” the industrial action
SAA says the decision is a “pivotal moment” for the airline because it ends negotiations which date back to May last year
Pilots at the carrier commenced a work-to-rule on 19 March
“[The pilots’] resolution aligns with the airline’s best interest
the thousands of customers who depend on SAA to connect them to destinations,” says SAA group chief John Lamola
