(Business in Cameroon) - The Cassava processing unit Sotramas finally started operations this month
which is expected to produce 120 tons of starch and flour per day
this industrial unit has never been able to effectively start production due to misunderstandings regarding the appointment of the general manager
the absence of raw materials to supply the plant
the municipality of Sangmelima and the Chamber of Commerce
have announced the establishment of a cassava cluster around the city of Sangmelima
This cluster will be established on a seed field of 150 hectares to ensure that cassava producers have access to plant materials
According to 2015 estimates by the Ministry of Agriculture
over 4,000 hectares of cassava will have to be cultivated over five years for Sotramas to reach full capacity
a goal that is still far from being achieved

the 65-km Sangmélina-Bikoula road section (in Southern Cameroon) is 83% completed
The completion rate was estimated during the field visit carried out earlier this week by Minister of Public Works Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi
According to executives of the Iranian company Kayson Inc
the road will be delivered by end-September 2021
provided the problems related to the compensation of residents along this road section are addressed
the compensations still pending before competent authorities
along with the Iranian companies’ technical failures and difficulties have been the main reasons delaying the construction of that road section connecting Cameroon to the Republic of Congo
Even if the road section is delivered on September 30
Kayson Inc has already taken close to nine years just to build this 65-km road section
the Iranian company started construction works for this section on October 12
The completion of Sangmélina-Bikoula will boost trades between Cameroon and Congo since it is a section of the Sangmelima-Ouesso cross-border road
(Business in Cameroon) - Road transport company United Express launched Monday the first direct route between Cameroon and Congo
the company only operated air-conditioned bus services between the Cameroonian cities of Yaoundé and Douala
The new route is the very first experience of road passenger transport between two countries in the CEMAC region
the 24-hour trips will first only take place on Mondays with a stop in the southern region of Sangmélima and a transfer at the border between Cameroon and Congo in the town of Ntam (Eastern Cameroon)
The project is made possible through a partnership with Saint Denis Voyages (SDV)
the Congolese transport company which will be responsible for picking up passengers at the border between the two countries and taking them to Brazzaville
Fares for a Douala-Brazza trip are CFA75,000 for one-way and CFA130,000 for a round-trip while those for a trip between Yaoundé and Brazzaville are CFA70,000 (one-way) and CFA120,000 (round-trip)
and those for a trip between Sangmélima and Brazzaville are CFA65,000 and CFA115,000
This transport option is a more affordable alternative to air transport
and contributes to better networking within the Cemac countries
It follows the completion of the Cameroonian section of the transborder road between Sangmelima in Cameroon and Ouesso in Congo in 2021
This section was considered the missing link in the Yaoundé-Brazzaville corridor
which is a crucial component of the alternative route from Windhoek (Namibia) to Tripoli (Libya)
connecting the Central African Republic to Cameroon
and facilitating interconnection with the Brazzaville-Pointe-Noire road in Congo
was co-financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB)
the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA)
and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development
(Business in Cameroon) - The Cameroonian sections of the Sangmelima-Ouesso corridor connecting Cameroon and Congo will soon be inaugurated
Minister of Public Works Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi announced in a release signed on December 20
The sections concerned are Sangmelima-Bikoula (85 km)
Mintom-Lélé (67.50 km) and Lélé-Ntam-Mbalam (53 km)
“The logistics chain improvement project in Africa aims to connect the two countries [Cameroon and Congo] by road and boost trade
This is now possible,” the release informs
the roads will contribute to both countries’ development goals by facilitating sub-regional integration
and easing access from Yaoundé to Brazzaville
The Sangmelima-Ouesso road costs XAF119.8 billion
The funds were raised from several financial partners including the BADEA
and the two countries involved in the project
(Business in Cameroon) - The Cameroonian government has just awarded to the Egyptian civil engineering company
for the construction of a stretch of the Sangmélima-Ouesso cross-border road which is meant to link Cameroon to the Republic of Congo
which should be carried out over a 20-months period
is also about the construction of 32 kilometres of road between Bikoula and Djoum
to complete the 65 km of road between Sangmélima and Djoum
for which only 25% of the construction works was achieved (3 years after their launch)
The contract for this first stretch had been awarded to the Iranian company Kayson Company
whose bid for the construction of the Bikoula-Djoum road has just been rejected by the Cameroonian government
officially due to “insufficient references on performances in similar project”
Officially presented as “the missing link between the capitals Yaoundé and Brazzaville”
the Sangmélima (Cameroon)-Ouesso (Congo) cross-border road construction project will consist in paving 651 km
including 316 km on the Cameroonian side and 335 on the Congolese side (including the first 169 km commissioned on 11 February 2016)
the Kuwaiti Fund and the two states involved in the project
four road sections connecting to Congo are scheduled to be completed in November 2020
These are the Sangmelima-Bikoula (65 km)
Mintom-Lélé (67.50 km) and Lélé-Ntam-Mbalam (53 km) sections
The completion schedule was revealed in a briefing note
about a 4-day visit being carried out by Minister Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi since March 4
the visit is to inspect the completion rate of all the sections at the Cameroonian side of the trans-border road Sangmelima-Ouesso
the road connecting Congolese towns of Sembé and Souanké to the Cameroonian border is scheduled to be inaugurated today March 6
only one of the five sections Cameroon had to build in the framework of the trans-border road has been completed
This completed section is Djoum-Mintom (98 km)
and Lélé-Ntam-Mbalam) are expected to be completed in November
All those road sections are part of the trans-border road Sangmélima-Ouesso
This road project consists of the asphalting of about 700 km of road to facilitate trade between Cameroon and Congo
financing was raised by the two countries with the support of the AfDB
the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa
the Saudi Fund for Development and the Kuwait Fund
(Business in Cameroon) - Cassava producers in Sangmelima
will soon be dotted with a cassava processing plant
After a meeting of stakeholders of the project in the locality recently
a company to pilot the affairs of the soon-to-be-created plant was set up
“Société de transformation industrielle de manioc (SOTRAMAS)” or Industrial Cassava Processing Company
would process about 120 metric tonnes of cassava per day (48,000 metric tonnes per year) and generate about 180 direct jobs
Focus of the plant will be the production of starch which is said to be selling like hot cake in the national and international markets
Industries and Crafts of Cameroon and the Sangmelima council to the tune of FCFA 1.2 billion
the plant is almost at the stage of finishing and the project is to boost the industrialisation process undertaken by public authorities in Cameroon

(Business in Cameroon) - During the evaluation meeting for the construction of the Mengong-Sangmelima road of 73.658 km
declared himself satisfied with the works undertaken on this important road
From the presentation made by the monitoring mission
we can mention that significant progress were noted in the execution of the works
The global progress for May 2016 is estimated at 12% for 31.93% of the time allocated
The main completed works are the general worksite installation
the monitoring mission noted that the rate of progress of the completed works would be higher if some constraints had not delayed the work developments
There is for example the total release of the Esse-Akak quarry where the equipment of the former dismissed company is still on site and the full release of the expropriated lands in the project areas
Several actions have been carried out to solve these different situations and
the company has started removing its equipment to enable the company Arab Contractors start work
The Mvila prefectoral commission is working hard to finalise the expropriation process on the project
(Business in Cameroon) - Cameroon will experiment with the Emulsion Enhanced Recycling (EER) technique for the renovation of the 115-kilometer road connecting Mbalmayo (Center) and Sangmélima (South). "The technique involves reusing worn-out in-place material and improving its performance by recycling it..
The result is an in-place material that can withstand traffic for ten to fifteen years," explains Blaise Simo
technical manager at Razel Cameroun.
It is expected to reduce road rehabilitation costs in the country
"Pavement recycling projects are less costly than conventional approaches," says the Ministry of Public Works
Recycling reduces the number of quarry materials to be imported
It also reduces the need to set up crushing plants or open new quarries
It helps save transport costs as there will be fewer materials to supply from outside and also saves execution times.
To facilitate the execution of these works
the project has been divided into three lots
for an about CFAF7.7 billion contract, has been completed
financed to the tune of CFAF7.5 billion FCFA
Arab Contractors has completed 7% of the works
entrusted to Razel for nearly CFAF5.103 billion
the country is expected to spend CFAF20.3 billion to renovate the 115-kilometer road
That is an average of CFAF176 million per kilometer of road.
Cameroon has been known as one of the African countries with the most expensive roads
during a meeting of the focal points of the National Road Council (Conaroute)
it was revealed that the average price per kilometer of paved road in Cameroon is estimated at around CFAF205 million while the African average is CFAF100 million
the World Bank revealed that certain road infrastructures in Cameroon are 2 to 6 times more expensive than African projects of the same scale
Cameroon’s Minister of Public Works Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi inaugurated a total of 321.5km of newly constructed and previously missing sections of the Sangmelina-Ouesso Road Corridor that links Cameroon and the neighboring republic of Congo

Constructed under the Central African Consensual Transport Development Master Plan (PDCT-AC)
the said sections are the 85km long Sangmelima-Bikoula
Owing to these newly constructed sections of sangmelina-ouesso road corridor
can now make the whole journey within seven hours
is a significant reduction in traveling time considering that previously travelers would spend at least four days on the same route reason been the road was in a terrible condition especially after Sangmelina
the African Development Bank (AfDB) representative for the Central African region
explained that he worked as an expert on the project
“At one time, I hit the road to get a feel of the real conditions. This road you are seeing now was just a track, but I’m proud to see that now two Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) capitals are connected by a real road
It is the AfDB’s ambition to see similar initiatives implemented in more countries in the Central African region,” said Mr
AfDB is the main donor of the Sangmelina-Ouesso Road Corridor project, the cost of which was close to US$ 354bn. Other contributors were the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa
and the two beneficiary countries (Congo and Cameroon)

the right of way on this section allowed them to increase the rate of execution of works to more than 94%
The 65 km long Sangmélima-Bikoula section on the other hand achieved a rate of 83% in May. The Iranian company Kayson Inc
which will have spent 9 years on this site for various technical and financial difficulties
is the date announced for the delivery of the 53 km line between Lele
had it not been for the constraints linked to compensation for the populations affected by the project
of which 95% of the works are already completed
should have been provisionally accepted in January 2021
the section 67.5 km separating the localities of Mintom and Lélé
have been completed for several months now
the Sangmélima-Ouesso Road project consists of asphalting of approximately 700 km of road
of which 321 km lie on the Cameroonian side

According to the officials of the Iranian company
the site will be delivered subject to the resolution of some compensation problems for residents of KP 63 to KP 64.5
which are still pending before the administration of Cameroon
Noteworthy, these compensations coupled with the difficulties and technical failures of Kayson Inc, were moreover the main reasons for the delay in the construction of this road project which begun back in October 2012 according to data from the Ministry of Public Works of Cameroon (Ministère des Travaux Publics de Cameroun)
the project implementation will have taken approximately 9 years to complete
