Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News
2024 — In a tragic escalation of the ongoing conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions
CPDM Councillor Mathias Bang of the Zhoa Council was brutally assassinated by separatist fighters
The ambush occurred as Bang was traveling from Wum
He was intercepted by the fighters and shot to death
The motorcycle rider accompanying him is currently in critical condition at a health facility in Befang
The harrowing attack underscores the persistent violence that has plagued the North West and South West regions of Cameroon for seven years
resulting in over 6,000 deaths and countless missing persons
Mathias Bang was not just a political figure but a beloved leader in his community
He was a titled man from Weh village in the North West
revered for his efforts to foster harmony in a region torn apart by strife
Eyewitnesses recount that Bang and his motorcycle rider were attempting to cross from Wum to Bamenda when they encountered separatist fighters enforcing a roadblock
The fighters insisted that no one could cross into Bamenda
additional gunmen lay in wait further along the route
As Bang and his rider proceeded without authorization
Bang was shot from behind and succumbed to his injuries at the scene
The assassination of Mathias Bang highlights the dire situation in the North West region
where separatist violence continues unabated
Political leaders are increasingly questioning whether the president of Cameroon has neglected his duty to end the conflict
marks another somber chapter in the ongoing crisis
His death has sent shockwaves through his community and beyond
raising urgent calls for renewed efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict
the motorcycle rider who survived the attack continues to fight for his life
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the human toll of the conflict
with ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire of a struggle that has devastated communities and disrupted countless lives
the need for effective intervention and a sustainable peace process becomes ever more critical
The assassination of Mathias Bang stands as a stark testament to the urgency of resolving the conflict and restoring stability to the afflicted regions

(LAVALAVA Records)
WUM is an album that seems to have just appeared into existence
Packed full of industrial rhythm and intensity
Rhys Delany implores you to listen to one of his albums of the year
Yao Bobby and Simon Grab’s debut album
which is made up of waves of feedback and low-end synth rhythms perfectly compliments the all-out intensity that is Yao Bobby’s vocals
The duo have only released a handful of songs on the Bristol-based record label LAVALAVA Records and WUM is a powerful statement as far as full-length releases go
The album is a collection of 20 beat-heavy tracks that span almost an hour and a half
My only criticism of the album would be its length
but I challenge you to turn it off once you get going
The marathon of music just keeps coming and coming and coming
The lyrics are a combination of Éwé
French and English all wrapped into a polyglottic collage of sound
The music feels militaristic and having songs previously titled Black Revolution it is safe to say this music wants to ignite that fire that exists in the mind of every human
The album has been a labour of attrition and part of the reason I feel compelled to write about it
It was released on September 14th with little to no fanfare
but it deserves all of the praise in the world
I first heard the duo when one of their songs was aired on BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and then I read about the upcoming album in an issue of The Wire and every time I have seen or heard something by the pair
The release date had been left to hang in the ether for quite some time
issues with the Togolese government and visa complications
Add on top of that the way that life has been going in these recent months
WUM is undoubtedly one of the key albums of the year
It feels reductive to even consider it an ‘album of the year’
but it so acutely reflects the current social and political climate that it just makes sense
There is a communal sense of anger that everyone is feeling at the moment and this music will allow you to find catharsis in that anger
WUM is released via LAVALAVA records on September 14th 2022 and can be purchased here

Cameroon (MNN) — The Fulani herdsmen are known to frequent Nigeria
their nomadic lifestyle recently brought them to Cameroon
a Bible translator was killed in his home during an attack by the Fulani herdsmen
a village located in the Northwest of the country
The attackers used a machete to dismember Angus Abraham Fung. The Christian Post reports Fung’s wife
she and another person who was staying in their home did manage to escape
Eveline is currently receiving a blood transfusion
It is likely related to the escalating conflict in Cameroon related to the Anglophone crisis
Cameroon is split into two major areas known as Anglophone regions and Francophone regions. The conflict between these regions stems from colonial times with regards to the British-controlled areas of Cameroon and the French-controlled areas of Cameroon. (Read more on this history here.)

Fast forward to the present day, when separatists in the Anglophone region are fighting for independence
this does appear to have played a role in the recent attack which claimed Fung’s life
“One of the big issues there is that the government
with a more international pressure getting [put on the] Cameron government
they have been trying to provoke a religious war to just create chaos
Create division between the local people,” says Efi Tembon of Oasis Network for Community Transformation
regardless of the definite “why” behind this attack
the Christian community in Cameroon is hurting

“Pray that God will help intervene to resolve the conflict…many people…are suffering…The government had burned more than 200 villages
This [has] been going on for three years now
many villages have been burned and this is not getting into the Western media,” Tembon says
pray for the people who are suffering that more than 700,000 people have been displaced
some have crossed over to Nigeria…Pray that God will help all these people.”

A Bible translator in Cameroon was butchered to death on Sunday morning during an overnight attack while his wife’s arm was cut off
Bible translator Angus Abraham Fung was among seven people said to have been killed during an attack carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen sometime during the early hours of Sunday morning in the town of Wum
who leads a ministry called Oasis Network for Community Transformation
Located in Cameroon’s violence-ridden Anglophone region where separatists are fighting for independence
Wum is among several localities where youth from the nomadic Fulani herding community are being encouraged by government actors to carry out attacks against local farming communities that support the separatist rebels
who at times worked on projects in Wum before he was forced to flee the country after speaking to the U.S
said he was told by sources in the town that Fulani herders stormed five homes Saturday night into Sunday morning
“They went into houses and pulled out the people,” Tembon explained to The Christian Post
“They attacked in the night and nobody was expecting
Tembon said that he was not informed as to how many people were injured in the attack
had her arm cut off and is receiving a blood transfusion at a local hospital
Tembon was told that Fung was cut to death with a machete
They just came in and killed people at the home,” Tembon added
stating that most of the victims were older men
Fung was in his 60s and served for years with the Aghem Bible translation project in Cameroon
working on a New Testament translation in the Aghem language
“He was one of the key community leaders in the whole tribe and he was part of the translation services and also coordinated literacy efforts,” Tembon explained
he was a huge part of the literacy work because their language had never been written before
he was the one coordinating it and teaching the language
So many people now can read and write the language as a result of Angus’ work.”
Although the New Testament translation for the Aghem language was completed and over 3,000 copies have been published
Tembon said that distribution has not happened because of the war in the region
“This war is a complete disruption of what has been going on,” Tembon stated
“We haven’t been able to dedicate it because of the war
We are doing what we call listening groups
We have done the recording and started listening groups where people come and listen to scriptures together in the community.”
Wum is a rural town of no more than 5,000 people
About 90 percent of the town’s people consider themselves to be Christian but also practice traditional religions
While the local people live and farm in the town
Muslim Fulani herders live and graze their cattle on a hill outside the town
But because the area is controlled by separatists
he claimed the government has encouraged and even armed Fulani to carry out attacks against the separatist-supporting communities as a way of pushing a “religious twist” to the conflict
“The government knows that the local people are supporting the local forces,” he explained
“The Fulani are Muslim and they are a minority in the area
And they always have a farmer-grazer problem between the local people and the Fulani
The government uses that now to get the Fulani on their side as an ally to fight the local people
So they have been armed and protected by the government and terrorize the local people.”
Tembon noted that not all Fulanis are a party to such attacks
adding that some Fulani have even joined the separatist rebels and some Fulani live in the town with the rest of the local community
Tembon stressed that Sunday’s attack is not the first to have happened in Wum. In June, villagers in Wum were reportedly attacked and several homes were burned down
“They have burned churches and have killed people in several areas,” he said
“The local people have killed their cows as revenge.”
a graduate of Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary in Ndu and served at Bitu Baptist Church
was reported to have been among many people killed during a military invasion in the Mfumte area
“Many other people were killed in the area,” Tembon said at the time
“The military has search and lotted homes and burnt down several houses.”
The Anglophone conflict began in 2016 as separatists began protesting for autonomy because they felt underrepresented in the majority-French-speaking central government. Since then, tens of thousands of people have fled from their homes as a result of the violence
As many as 50,000 people have fled from Cameroon in Nigeria
and other neighboring countries while as many 700,000 are internally displaced
“The international community puts the number of those killed at 2,000
But I believe they are intentionally keeping the numbers low so as not to be accused of looking away,” he contended
I do think the number of those killed cannot be lower than 7,000 people during the last three years.”
A previous version of this article said Tembon spoke to Congress in 2016
It also reported that Fung worked with Wycliffe Bible Translators
He did not work with Wycliffe Bible Translators
but he did work with the Aghem Bible translation project in Cameroon

but the channel always maintains the upbeat
Now that What’s Up Moms has surpassed one million subscribers
Tubefilter: How does it feel to have one million subscribers
we want to say “Thank You!” Our community’s feedback through comments
suggestions and words of encouragement got us to this point and we could not be more grateful
Reaching a million validates that moms need the type of content we are creating
TF: What inspired you to start What’s Up Moms
WUM: We weren’t really motivated by numbers. We simply wanted to create content that we wanted to see and couldn’t find elsewhere. When we were first time moms, there were a million videos on how to apply mascara, but very few videos focused on parenting tips, like how to fly with a baby
TF: Would you say the tips you provide are universal
or are they only targeting a certain class of mom
WUM: There is so much that’s universal to parenting
Not every mom experiences motherhood in the exact same way
but we all try to be the best we can in our roles
We hope that What’s Up Moms gives some tools to help moms get there
even if it’s a much-needed laugh along the way
TF: Do you have subscribers and viewers who are not moms
why do you think they find your channel appealing
we get comments from dads and from other viewers who provide child care
We try to keep things light-hearted in addition to informative
If we can teach someone something and make them laugh in under 2 minutes
TF: How long does it take to create one of your music video parodies from start to finish
WUM: We have so much fun with the video parodies that we’re often up trading lyrics via e-mail though the middle of the night
Our video “I’m So Pregnant” was completed in 6 days from inception to edit
We had to wrap that one before Meg actually went into labor
TF: What is the number one tip you would give to a new mother
TF: How do your children feel about your channel
WUM: The only people as passionate about the channel as we are are our families
They’re proud to be part of the team and it’s not unusual to find them watching old videos on repeat
TF: Do you ever plan to expand your team of on-air creators
We feel like every mom is an expert in something and our plans for 2016 focus on harnessing that knowledge to make What’s Up Moms an even more robust resource for parents
WUM: We are working on a community-based project and can’t wait to tell you more about it this Summer
we will continue to make content that moms need and want

The programme features a mechanism to continue degassing the lake
through a Deep Water Solar Energy pumping system
putting in place a permanent control mechanism to monitor trends in the lake and maintain surveillance equipment
It also proposed more holistic prevention plans instead of security a perimeter around Lake Nyos
It also features actions to prepare the return of the survivors to Nyos
support to persons who decide not to return
construction of new roads, rehabilitation of existing roads
It also emerged from the event in Wum that the 2017 work plan of the National Programme to secure and rehabilitate Lake Nyos focuses on the demarcation and marking out of the security zone around Lake Nyos, support for the rehabilitation of school infrastructure
provision of inputs and agro-pastoral materials etc
Yap Mariatou: “Need to Align With Existing Realities”
Coordinator National Programme to secure and rehabilitate Lake Nyos
What motivated the review of the programme to secure and rehabilitate Lake Nyos
The Lake Nyos disaster remains the worst ever in the history of Cameroon and the government’s National Programme to secure and rehabilitate the Lake area is a response to check any future gas explosion and any risk linked with the collapse of the retention dam
Survivors were also resettled in some seven camps spread over Menchum and Boyo Divisions
The survivors continue to dream towards the return to their land and it has been the commitment of the government and its partners to work towards acceptable conditions before their return
This is to avoid a situation where they will be exposed to other risks if they are allowed to return in disorder
It is against this backdrop that the degassing process was accelerated with more pipes planted and a system to alert of any threats
The lake area also features some risks of floods when the rains are heavy and the population needs to be sensitized and trained on how to respond to such disasters
How far has the programme gone in the execution of conceived respective components
Perhaps; I should say that the first component which had to do with the securement of the lake’s site has been achieved and survivors could return to Nyos but not before
the security perimeter has been planted or marked out
It is necessary to have this aspect achieved to distinguish
risk areas from farming and settlement land
There will be need for the resettled population to carry out their activities in a biodiversity friendly manner and above all’ the need for the population to take ownership of preventive and operational actions while back in the land
Basic social facilities are also required before survivors can return to give them a chance in life without more problems
It is for this reason that we were in Wum to address some anthropological and socio-political issues that could arise from the return and rehabilitation of the displaced persons
It must be noted that times have changed since the disaster occurred and there is a need to update the programme to existing realities and facilitate the return of the survivors
