As reported by the local newspaper La Nación
FIFA has raised concerns about a possible rigging of a first-division match played last season in the Costa Rican Liga Promerica soccer tournament
to launch an investigation into the match between Santos de Guápiles and Asociación Deportiva Guanacasteca
which took place on October 20 at the Ebal Rodríguez Aguilar Stadium in Guápiles
participants in that match have been summoned for interviews
The clubs have not yet been officially notified of the process
but it is likely that this will happen shortly
At the end of the regular stage of that championship
Guanacasteca finished in fifth place with 35 points
which qualified for the semifinals on goal difference
A draw in Guápiles would have secured Guanacasteca’s place in the semifinals
Santos finished in tenth place with 21 points
ahead of Santa Ana (20 points) and Puntarenas F.C
enduring an 18-game winless streak spanning the summer and winter 2024 tournaments
Their first victory of the semester came in October with the 4-0 win over Guanacasteca
remaining undefeated in eight matches while competing for a playoff spot
This is not the first time match-fixing has been investigated in Costa Rican soccer. In March 2024, Costa Rica saw its first official punishment for match manipulation. At that time, the Disciplinary Committee of the Costa Rican Football Federation imposed a 10-year sanction on the Puerto Golfito team and three officials.
The case led FIFA’s Integrity Officer in Costa Rica to submit a report to the Federation’s Disciplinary Committee, which ultimately issued the resolution.

New York City FC will face Costa Rican club Santos de Guápiles Fútbol Club across two legs in the Round of 16 of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League following a draw conducted by the federation earlier tonight.
This will be NYCFC’s second involvement in the tournament after previously qualifying for the 2020 edition of the competition. On that occasion, the Club reached the quarterfinal stage before falling to Mexican side Tigres.
NYCFC qualified alongside 15 other teams after securing MLS Cup last week against Portland Timbers and will now face off in a two-legged tie against Santos de Guápiles in February.
Dates and times for the matches will be released in the coming days.
Santos de Guápiles qualified for the competition as the second best-ranked losing quarterfinalist in the 2021 Concacaf League. They also finished second in the Costa Rican Primera Division Clausura in 2021.
NYCFC will look to become the first American team to win the competition since the format changed in 2008.

The advent of the Scotiabank CONCACAF League (SCL) this year
has given hope that another team from the Central American nation can join the exclusive assemblage
Santos de Guapiles is looking to take another step in that process on Wednesday
when it faces host Arabe Unido in the first leg of their SCL semifinal series
“The truth is that winning the tournament would be a prize for the group’s work,” said defender Marvin Obando
who played in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League with Herediano
“To be among the strongest teams in the area -- not only nationally
but also internationally -- and being champion
which has never won a title in the Costa Rican top flight
“We would leave the name of Costa Rica and Santos de Guapiles high,” the 35-year-old Obando finished
“That is why this is so important to us as a group.”
Santos de Guapiles is the only semifinalist to have a perfect 4-0-0 overall record in the competition

Austin State University study abroad course sponsored by the Rusche College of Business is introducing incoming first-year students and non-business majors to business concepts and principles as well as other cultures over the summer
that student will most likely either work for someone else’s business
start their own or both,” said Drew Thornley
SFA associate professor of legal studies and a co-instructor for the course
“We want to better equip these students for their professional lives
Unlike SFA’s other business study abroad trips
the “Discovering Business” course requires no previous knowledge of business
SFA associate professor of economics and a co-instructor for the course
students also conduct interviews with the founding entrepreneurs of several local businesses.
“Business intersects with all of our lives
Understanding the ways that interacting with businesses improves our lives and potentially stalls our progress is vital in today’s technology-driven world,” Phelps said
“This course is designed to help students see the world from the perspective of a business and to enable them to be more sophisticated consumers and more strategic entrepreneurs.”
8-14 trip started their first year of college at the end of August
who studied abroad before his first year of college
wanted to help create the same opportunity for SFA’s incoming first-year students
studying abroad before starting college can ease one’s transition from high school to college,” he said
“It allows students to meet faculty and other students with whom they can form a bond prior to stepping foot on campus in the fall
it can be an invaluable tool for student recruitment and retention.”
the students traveled to Costa Rican sites
the Tirimbina Biological Reserve and Rainforest Lodge in Sarapiquí
“These transformational study abroad experiences accelerate the learning process and are at the heart of SFA’s vision,” Phelps said
“The world is a big place and being able to experience more of it instills a sense of freedom
This growth-oriented mindset is an indispensable asset for personal development.”

“There were endless opportunities for me to learn about different cuisine
homemaking and hospitality skills,” Benit said
“I can truly say this trip impacted my future career choices
I look forward to studying abroad again.”
another incoming first-year student during the trip
discovered the tenacity business owners need to be successful.
“I learned that businesses are formed through the determination of the founders,” Hordge said
“Each business owner started from the bottom and found creative ways to build their business.”
These types of reflections by students in the course have ensured it will be offered annually at a new destination each year right before the fall semester begins
“Studying abroad creates opportunities for students to respond to challenges in positive ways and to become more adaptable,” Thornley said

with Forge needing to pull out a gutsy 2-0 win in Panama City after a scoreless draw at home the week before
That particular victory was not without cost
with Mo Babouli’s controversial red card just before halftime meaning he’s suspended for this first leg
Babouli has two goals in this competition this year
so that’ll be a serious blow to their attack
Forge enter Costa Rica with plenty of confidence
and they’ve won four of their last five — including a 2-0 triumph over Atlético Ottawa on Saturday afternoon
meanwhile — a 60-year-old club from the Limón region of Costa Rica — are also in decent form
They’re currently second in their domestic league’s Apertura season
and they won 3-1 on the road against eighth-place Guanacasteca on Sunday
They qualified for this competition as the third Costa Rican team
being the side with the best record from the 2021 Clausura campaign aside from champions Saprissa
Santos entered this tournament in the preliminary round
where they trounced Belizean club Verdes 6-1 on aggregate
keeping two clean sheets in a 3-0 aggregate victory
This is the Costa Rican side’s third appearance in the Concacaf League
losing on penalties to Jamaican club Portmore United
Santos went all the way to the final of the competition
where they lost in heartbreaking fashion to CD Olimpia of Honduras — again on penalty kicks
Forge will be very keen on putting one or two in the back of the net in this first leg before they return home for the return fixture
This match will be played at Costa Rica’s national stadium
rather than Santos’ home ground Estadio Ebal Rodríguez
likely due to Concacaf regulations on facility conditions
The current forecast in San José is calling for thunderstorms and humidity on Wednesday — not necessarily welcome news to Forge
but also nothing the Hammers haven’t dealt with successfully before

New York City FC can confirm today that the Club’s upcoming Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League (SCCL) home leg against Costa Rican club Santos de Guápiles Fútbol Club will be held at LAFC’s Banc of California Stadium on February 23
prior to the start of the MLS regular season
The Club’s primary and secondary home venues
is the only Concacaf-approved venue in the immediate New York City metropolitan area
but is also unavailable due to stadium and pitch renovations
the Club has needed to look outside the NYC area and settled on Banc of California Stadium due to the Club’s away game against LA Galaxy being played nearby just four days later
said: “We’re extremely proud to compete in the Concacaf Champions League following our triumph in Portland to win our first MLS Cup Championship last season
This Club belongs on the biggest stage possible and although finding home venues for the home legs of any Champions League matches are challenging to us
we are excited to compete against the best teams in North and Central America for another piece of silverware
“It is frustrating that this home game will be played on the other side of the country
with our season opener at LA Galaxy only a few days later and our inability to play at Yankee Stadium or one of our alternative home venues
we felt that this arrangement gave our Club the best possible chance for two positive results that week as we look to do well in SCCL and begin the defense of the title
The first leg of NYCFC’s tie against Santos de Guápiles Fútbol Club will take place on February 15 at 8:00pm ET
That game has been relocated from Guapiles to the Costa Rican Capital
San Jose since Santos’ home stadium is not Concacaf approved
The second leg in LA will kick off at 3:00pm PST / 6:00pm ET
NYCFC will play its first game of the MLS regular season as defending MLS Cup Champions against LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park on February 27
This will be NYCFC’s second involvement in the SCCL tournament after previously qualifying for the 2020 edition of the competition
the Club reached the quarterfinal stage before falling to Mexican side Tigres

The National Meteorological Institute (IMN) issued a warning regarding heavy rains looming over the Northern Zone and the Caribbean
The institute emphasized that the country is transitioning into the rainy season
Six flooding incidents have already been reported in the cantons of Matina and Limón center
as confirmed by the National Emergency Commission (CNE)
“Residents have reported heavy rains leading to several flooded homes,” stated the CNE
reports have surfaced indicating that Limon International Airport reported damages
as its runway and facilities were submerged
The consistent influx of humidity from the Caribbean Sea coupled with the unstable atmospheric conditions over Costa Rica has triggered rainfall in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone in recent days
rainfall ranging between 50 mm and 75 mm was recorded in the province of Limón and the San Carlos plain
with maximum values approaching 100 mm in Guápiles
early Tuesday morning witnessed downpours primarily in Guápiles and Limón
with precipitation measuring between 30 mm and 40 mm
“Rains are anticipated to persist in these regions throughout the morning
with a reduction in intensity expected by afternoon
mainly focusing on mountainous areas,” elucidated the IMN
localized downpours accompanied by thunderstorms are forecasted for the Central and South Pacific regions Tuesday afternoon
According to IMN’s projections for this week
the Central and South Pacific regions will witness the gradual establishment of the transition period from the dry season to the rainy season
resulting in afternoon rainfall occurring sporadically
“Occasional rains are anticipated in the North Pacific
predominantly concentrated in the south of the Nicoya Peninsula
while the Central Valley is expected to experience showers along the Central Volcanic Mountain Range,” the institution stated
The IMN is urging heightened vigilance in the Caribbean and Northern Zone regions due to increased water flow in streams and rivers stemming from recent rainfall
Caution is also advised in flood-prone areas
Forge FC delivered another magical night in the Concacaf League on Tuesday at Tim Hortons Field
as their attack exploded for a 3-0 win over Costa Rican outfit Santos de Guápiles
handing the CPL team a 4-3 win on aggregate in the quarterfinal tie to advance to the semis and also book themselves a ticket for next year’s Concacaf Champions League
Forge scored just before the half-hour mark as Omar Browne fired a long-distance screamer off the crossbar and in to pull them within one of Santos’ lead
Babouli made it 2-0 (evening the score on aggregate) by volleying home a perfect cross by Browne
Costa Rica native Joshua Navarro sealed it for Forge by finishing a well-worked team attack to make it 3-0 on the night and put the Hamiltonians firmly — and permanently — in front
RELATED READING: RECAP: Forge FC advance to SF, qualify for Concacaf Champions League with resounding Leg 2 win vs. Santos
It’s genuinely incredible how this three-year-old club from Hamilton
In each of their forays into this Concacaf League competition
they’ve improved on the previous; their run to the round of 16 in year one was remarkable
and their campaign into the quarter-finals (playing each match away from home) last year even more so
they took yet another massive step forward
Forge FC will participate in the 2022 Concacaf Champions League
They’ll enter a competition alongside Mexican giants like Cruz Azul
there will be two Canadian sides in the tournament — whoever wins the Canadian Championship later this month will join Forge
Any kind of continental football is special — that much has been evident from the magical nights Forge have delivered in the Concacaf League — but the Champions League
Or host a Mexican opponent in Hamilton in the snow
it’ll build even further upon the name Forge have already established for themselves in just three years in the Concacaf region
Head coach Bobby Smyrniotis certainly deserves particular credit
as the architect of this incredible success
having built Forge into this powerhouse so quickly
and he — usually a very measured person — allowed himself to get a little emotional this time
“I think for the first time in three years I showed a little bit more emotion after the game and celebrating with our fans,” Smyrniotis told reporters postmatch
you’ve probably seen us win two North Star Shields
and we’ve got two trophies in a case and of course we’re gonna go for a third
but there’s something different about these games
There’s something different about the challenge
everything that goes into it… “We’re making one step each year
There were a lot of guys in this room and everyone wanted it
it comes with being champion of the Canadian Premier League; it’s not your right to compete in Concacaf League
we’ll know down the line in the future but I think for a club
and what we’ve accomplished year after year
It’s been a great ride and we keep on going.” Forge’s Emery Welshman also heaped praise on Smyrniotis and the rest of the staff behind the scenes
and he tried to collect his thoughts on the occasion
and being here from the beginning — I was here for the first leg of our Concacaf journey
and to see them go out the way that they did was heartbreaking
But now everything’s coming kind of full circle
What a special moment not just for this club but for Canadian football
regardless of if rivals out there might be a little resentful to it
This is a big moment for everybody; we’ve done it
and that’s special.” The true magnitude of what Forge accomplished on Tuesday — coming back from two goals down on aggregate
and delivering in that way to achieve something they’ve wanted so badly — might not sink in until months
but it is abundantly clear: Something special happened at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton
Elimane Cisse played at right-back for the third straight match
and his defensive workrate helped a lot with at least a few key tackles to cut out a Santos charge
staying deeper to cut things off and remain in position when Santos started coming at them
Even Forge’s more attacking players — especially Tristan Borges as a number 10 — did a lot of work to slow Santos down at the source
Forge seemed better able to get numbers back and behind the ball when Santos took possession
That’s not to say the visitors didn’t have counter-attacking chances; they had quite a few in the second half especially
but timely last-ditch defending combined with far less clinical finishing than Santos showed in Leg 1 kept Forge safe
It’s possible the colder weather (about three degrees Celsius) had an effect on the Costa Rican side and hurt their composure
but Forge deserve all the credit for identifying a problem from the previous encounter and addressing it so successfully
Smyrniotis pointed out postmatch that his side had learned a lot from their trip to San Jose for Leg 1; they encountered things (like that transition speed) against Santos they hadn’t really seen before
so when they returned for the second leg they had a far better idea of how to trap them
of course not the result we wanted down there
but we were sure we knew where we could go and be positive on the field
where we could find our opportunities and how we can create those opportunities
And I thought the guys were excellent at doing that
There may be one game out of the 12 or 13 we’ve played at home where maybe we haven’t been at our best
but we’ve played fantastic football here and that was the message
probably the best one that we’ve played in all these years because they can do so many different things
But when you look at the game today the guys were fantastic
the chances we created — just a complete performance.”
Not only did Forge get the job done on Tuesday
they did so in wonderfully entertaining fashion
If last week against CF Montreal they were missing that last piece of individual quality to put them over the edge and score
There’s probably never been a moment of individual quality from a CPL player quite like Omar Browne’s goal in the first half — that’s a strike that belongs on every highlight reel in the world — but beyond that
Forge’s players stepped up to the plate in this game
and the buildup play to create Josh Navarro’s late insurance marker (particularly the weighted pass from Kyle Bekker and Emery Welshman’s run into the box) was phenomenal
Forge’s tactical awareness and chemistry really helped them dominate so much of the game and create so many opportunities
Case in point: the lead-up to Browne’s goal
Alexander Achinioti-Jonsson and Kwame Awuah did so well to close down the Santos player on the touchline
and Awuah seemed to spot Babouli’s run immediately after they’d won the ball
Even Welshman trusted his teammate enough to allow Babouli’s pass to go through him to Browne
Forge looked ferociously hungry for 90-plus minutes
looking like a side that knew full well what the stakes were and what they needed to do
This team has looked ruthless and energetic before
that’s the vision I have for this team,” Smyrniotis said
and the trick is finding a way to keep it consistent
With new players coming in and how quickly they’ve rolled into playing
I’m obviously involved in the game as a coach
but as a neutral I think it’s quite good to watch
is the teams are out there and playing football that entertains
but that’s Forge football today.” If that’s what Forge football looks like consistently
Now that they’re in the semifinal (against a Honduran club
they’ll be eyeing the Concacaf League trophy
demonstrating just why Forge were so keen to get him into the squad this season
His goal was as incredible a strike as you’ll see anywhere
and he followed it up with an perfect cross to Mo Babouli for the second marker
Forge’s next match will be back in CPL action, as they head across the Greater Toronto Area to take on 905 Derby rivals York United this Saturday, November 6 (1 pm ET). The Concacaf League semifinal, against either Motagua or Marathón of Honduras, will likely kick off in late November. Watch all matches live on OneSoccer

Costa Rica Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) Director Walter Espinoza announced Tuesday that four suspects have been arrested for allegedly killing a California man and defrauding him of several properties. OIJ identified the victim as Brian Lynn Hogue, 64, who had been missing since June 2015.
According to Espinoza, the four suspects – two men and two women – learned that Hogue had several properties in Paquera, Puntarenas, listed under an anonymous corporation, known as an S.A. in Costa Rica, and allegedly conspired to commit identity fraud to gain control of the corporation.
The suspects are two sisters surnamed Gaitán Ramírez, and two men with the last names Corrales Vargas and López Corrales, according to a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday. The four allegedly presented false documents to a notary and tricked the registry into transferring control of the S.A. and its assets to them.
“When Brian Lynn [Hogue] became aware of the criminal acts, they decided to kill him” on June 2, 2015, Espinoza said during a Tuesday news conference.
The prime suspects in the killing of Hogue are the Gaitán sisters, according to Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Tatiana Vargas. A criminal court in Pococí ordered the sisters held in six months preventive detention.
Corrales and López allegedly committed the fraud. Corrales may have assisted in the killing, Vargas said, but there is not sufficient evidence at this time to request preventive detention. Both men are not in jail but are required to regularly sign in with authorities and not communicate with the Gaitán sisters.
Police carried out five raids across Costa Rica this week in Aguas Zarcas, San Carlos; Coronado, San José; Garabito, Puntarenas; and two near Moín, Limón. None of the four suspects had criminal records, according to the OIJ.
Hogue was last seen in San José on June 1, 2015, driving a gold-colored Suzuki Grand Vitara. When he did not arrive home in Guápiles, a neighbor filed a missing-persons report with the OIJ on June 12, according to the OIJ delegation in Pococí.
The Tico Times previously reported that Hogue planned to retire in Costa Rica and was involved in reforestation efforts on properties he owned, including a farm in Guápiles where he lived with his wife and one of his children.
Hogue is survived by his four children, his wife and his former wife.

Reggae Boy Javon East scored his 9th goal of the season for Costa Rican club Santos de Guapiles in a 3-1 victory over Sporting San Jose in the Costa Rican top flight on Wednesday
The 26 year old scored in the second minute of second half stoppage time to propel Santos de Guapiles to second in the table

A crowd of 4,162 fans took in an entertaining and historic Concacaf League affair at Tim Hortons Field tonight
with Forge surpassing expectations to record a 3-0 win that sees the side advance to the semi-final stage of the continental competition
The result also means that Forge has qualified for the Concacaf Champions League
Tonight saw an absolute wondergoal from Omar Browne open the scoresheet early
with additional goals from Molham Babouli and Josh Navarro sinking Costa Rican visitors Santos de Guapiles as the series ended 4-3 in Forge’s favour
The hammers stepped onto the field at Tim Hortons Field knowing that it needed a big turnaround win in front of a home crowd, with the reigning CPL champions having lost the first leg by a scoreline of 3-1
Both sides fielded very similar lineups to that leg, with Bobby Smyrniotis replacing Dominic Samuel with Haiti-tapped defender Garven Metusala
and Santos naming one replacement with Michael Umana stepping in for Michael Barquero
It was a breathless start for the Santos defense
with Forge probing early and perhaps being unlucky not to score in the sixteenth minute after a sequence of play saw three desperate blocks keep Forge out of the net
with Cisse and Welshman unlucky to see their efforts stopped
The hammers nearly struck again minutes later
with Awuah sending in a sharp cross to Tristan Borges
with the midfielder taking a quick touch to launch a strike that went just over the crossbar
The moment of magic for Forge came in some fashion, with the hammers building up play with a sharp dummied pass from Babouli that allowed Omar Browne to fire an absolute right-footed rocket that went bar-down to bring the hosts up 1-0:
The visitors looked likely to equalize not long after
with Osvaldo Rodriguez sending in a beautiful pass to free Javon East
with Cisse coming to the rescue with a big block on the lone Jamaican forward
Alexander Achinioti-Jonsson would pick up a yellow near the end of the first half
meaning he’ll miss the club’s semi-final
The scoreline remained unchanged throughout the first half
with a Forge squad buoyed by a home crowd looking the better team
the visitors came inches from an equalizer to open the second half
nearly capitalizing on a mistake from Garven Metusala to sneak in a long-range shot in the fiftieth minute
Forge nearly procured a series equalizer after Welshman did well to keep possession on the turn in the sixtieth minute
but his pass went just behind the run of Kyle Bekker with Babouli sending the follow-up effort high
The former Toronto FC striker would get it right on his next opportunity
perfectly volleying home a right-footed ball into the back of the net after a pinpoint cross from Omar Browne that snuck in behind the run of the Santos defenders:
The goal sent Tim Hortons Field into raptures
with the crowd knowing that a 2-0 scoreline would catapult the side into the semi-finals this year and the Champions League next year
Related: Bekker Aiming For Champions League Heights With Forge FC
Luis Paradela could (and maybe should) have silenced the crowd in the 73rd minute
firing a close range effort will high in a moment the Cuban international will want back
Forge head coach Bobby Smyrniotis – who had called this the biggest match of Forge’s history – then made some defensive adjustments
bringing on Maxim Tissot for Tristan Borges as David Choiniere replaced Omar Browne
with Welshman trouncing down the right flank to send in a cross that Navarro was able to finish from close range
Santos was unable to get themselves on the scoresheet in the game’s closing minutes, which would have forced a penalty shootout – something which Forge already did earlier this week
the hammers came out straight 4-3 victors on aggregate
The result marks a significant milestone in Canadian football history
with Forge’s advancement to the semi-final stage of the Concacaf League also meaning that the club becomes the first Canadian Premier League side to qualify for the Champions League
With the club having also qualified for its domestic league playoffs with five games left to play, it’s going to be a busy November for the back-to-back CPL champions
The hammers’ previous two stints in the Concacaf League saw the team exit in the quarter-final stage and round of 16
