On Friday, the San Antonio Spurs announced that Gregg Popovich will no longer coach the team and is transitioning to a full-time role as president of basketball operations
Popovich, 76, ends his coaching tenure as the league's career wins leader with 1,422 regular-season victories and has five championships and an NBA record-tying three Coach of the Year awards. Enter Mitch Johnson, who was named acting head coach after Popovich suffered a mild stroke in November and will now take over coaching duties on a permanent basis
The Spurs were determined that Popovich had earned the right to decide when the time was right to step away
Popovich was adamant that he would come back only if he felt he could physically do the job
saying in recent years that he felt invigorated by working with young players eager to learn
Popovich decided he needed to shift into a supportive role with Johnson
whom he was very fond of and high on as his successor
There is relief and clarity. Popovich was definitely mulling continuing to coach these past few months, which is why his announcement that he wouldn't return during the season didn't say anything about his future. But he is NBA royalty and there was concern about the legendary coach's health. After an incident recently that required a trip to the hospital
there was even more concern for Popovich's well-being
The Spurs have been left in an excellent place by Popovich
but it is also fair to say one of his greatest accomplishments was leaving the position with a clean contingency plan
"He took a lot of losses over the last few years that he didn't have to take; it was a very unselfish act," one veteran league executive told ESPN
but the next generation of the team has his fingerprints on it."
In addition to being willing to take the hardest steps in a rebuild in his last years in the job
Popovich helped create and maintain a renowned culture
Many organizations over the years tried to duplicate it by raiding Popovich's front office and coaching staff
That culture will carry on long after his departure from the position
as Johnson steadily got more responsibilities in his time on the bench
even before Johnson was named acting head coach
that Popovich would have him draw up late-game strategy in huddles
Over the years there were many assistants who were viewed as some undefined "head coach in waiting" in San Antonio
That's because Popovich believed in developing assistants like he developed young players
by identifying them and nurturing those who he felt had high potential
and it never was because the Spurs handled all their business cleanly and quietly
it would've been viewed as one of the best in the league
As soon as word got out that Popovich was stepping down as coach but staying on as president
the league knew Johnson was very likely going to be the pick
Sometimes keeping things in the family in the NBA is problematic
Popovich has always valued that and protected that
when the Spurs started vetting Murray during the draft process (2016)
Johnson quickly caught the organization's attention for his coaching and communication acumen and brought him aboard as an assistant with the club's G League affiliate Austin Spurs
"One thing we said when he came and got me out of juvenile when I was 15 was
'We are in this together,'" Murray told ESPN of Johnson
we're going to put in all this damned work and we're going to see where the work takes us
we never knew all these things were going to happen or how things would happen
Johnson advanced quickly through the organization and has spent the past six seasons as an assistant under Popovich
including five years at the front of the bench after a 2020 promotion
The son of former two-time NBA All-Star and 1979 champion John "J.J." Johnson, Mitch Johnson was an accomplished player in high school (two state championships at O'Dea High School in Seattle, where he averaged 22 points and eight assists as a senior) and college at Stanford, where he was a four-year starter playing alongside Brook Lopez
they nicknamed Johnson "Maestro" due to the "the way he conducts and runs the show."
"Seeing him in the position he's in now is not a shock
"[He's] such an intelligent basketball player
the highest basketball IQ I've ever played with or been around."
Gregg Popovich has stepped down as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs
Here's everything you need to know about his legendary career
Within the Spurs organization, Johnson impressed Popovich, Spurs CEO RC Buford and GM Brian Wright with the way he navigated a tumultuous season in the wake of Popovich's stroke and the club shelving Wembanyama due to a blood clot issue in his shoulder
Johnson's leadership never wavered in adverse situations during weeklong trips to New York and Paris
not to mention Los Angeles during the wildfires
His words always resonated in the locker room
San Antonio's players consistently competed for Johnson
and it didn't go unnoticed among the franchise's decision-makers
"I trust the organization," Wembanyama said
"I also trust Mitch to grow into that role
I think we are in good hands supporting each other throughout the organization."
Getting clarity at head coach was the top priority on the Spurs' to-do list
The focus now shifts to the lottery. The Spurs not only have their own first-round pick but also a first from Atlanta. (San Antonio has a 6% chance of moving up from No. 8 to the top spot, while Atlanta's is 0.7%.) As for the roster, 10 players are under contract, led by back-to-back Rookies of the Year in Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle
From the play-in tournament to the NBA Finals
ESPN has you covered throughout the playoffs
One date to circle on the Spurs' calendar is Aug. 3. That is the first day Fox can sign a four-year $229 million max extension. And keep an eye on Chris Paul's future
After signing a one-year deal last offseason
Paul played all 82 games for the second time in his career and is set to enter free agency
The 2026 postseason is a reasonable expectation
and falling short of the playoffs might be something of a disappointment
The Spurs were 21-25 this season in the 46 games Wembanyama played
just five of which came alongside Fox between San Antonio's blockbuster midseason trade and Wembanyama being sidelined with deep vein thrombosis
Slow-playing Wembanyama's development allowed the Spurs to add Castle with the No
4 pick last June and another lottery pick this year
but with the arrival of Fox and the future picks San Antonio has stockpiled
now is the time to start getting those young players experience in high-intensity games
Only Kobe Bryant, Luka Doncic, Dwight Howard and LeBron James have been voted All-NBA before age 21.5
something Wembanyama was on track to achieve before falling short of the 65-game minimum due to his absence
All of those players made their playoff debuts by their third seasons in the league
with Howard and James both breaking through in Year 3
amassed 1,422 wins as head coach of the Spurs
Gregg Popovich stepped down as coach of the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, ending a three-decade run that saw him lead the team to five NBA championships, become the league’s all-time wins leader and earn induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame
“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” Popovich said

Popovich, 76, missed all but five games this season after having a stroke at the team’s arena on Nov. 2. He has not spoken publicly since, though he had addressed his team at least once and released a statement in late March saying that he hoped to return to coaching
“I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players
staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization
community and city that are so meaningful to me,” Popovich said
Popovich’s career ends with a record of 1,422-869
which does include the 77 games — 32 wins and 45 losses — that were coached by Johnson this season
He also won 170 playoff games with the Spurs
the most by any coach with any one team and the third-most overall behind only Phil Jackson’s 229 and Pat Riley’s 171
“The best there ever was,” Spurs great Manu Ginobili said last year of Popovich
Popovich was a three-time NBA Coach of the Year
to a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and coached six Hall of Famers in San Antonio — Ginobili
He went up against 170 different coaches during his time in the NBA and there have been 303 coaching changes made in the league
who played for the Spurs this past season — going there
because of the lure of playing for Popovich
All these years I’ve always seen Pop coaching in a suit
but I didn’t know how hard of a worker he was when it comes to training.”
carried over into this year after the stroke and Popovich’s commitment to his rehabilitation process
“I was the first one to get to the arena for games
and I would walk past the training room and Pop would be on the treadmill,” Paul said
“I actually had a chance to be in there while Pop is doing rehab or whatnot
that’s what I’m glad I got a chance to see

in his role as general manager of the Spurs
made the move to fire coach Bob Hill and promote himself into that job on Dec
having played all 18 of those games without Robinson
who was just about to come back from injury
Popovich took over on the day that Robinson returned to the lineup
“A change in direction was necessary,” Popovich said that day
The Spurs hadn’t changed direction again since
“Coach Pop’s extraordinary impact on our family
the Spurs and the game of basketball is profound,” Spurs managing partner Peter J
“His accolades and awards don’t do justice to the impact he has had on so many people
are grateful for his remarkable 29-year run as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.”
As Gregg Popovich's legendary coaching career comes to a close
take a look back at his iconic 29 seasons with San Antonio
The fortunes changed — Duncan was picked No. 1 overall in the 1997 Draft — but the direction under Popovich always stayed the same
The first championship came in 1999; others followed in 2003
the first 20 of those seasons winning at least 60% of the time
His decision to step away now comes with the Spurs having just completed the second year of a rebuild around French star Victor Wembanyama
who arrived touted as the next San Antonio great and has done nothing to suggest he won’t live up to that billing
famously wasn’t picked in a bid to make the 1972 U.S
Olympic team — some still say he merited a spot on that team — and wound up becoming a coach who might have been perfectly content to run Pomona-Pitzer
That school had lost 88 consecutive conference games when he arrived; it didn’t take long for Popovich to deliver a conference championship
then the patriarch of a dynasty fueled by Duncan
Popovich put together a career like none other
“Everyone knows the amazing job he’s done and all the accomplishments,” longtime coach Larry Brown said in 2021
“I wish more people really could know the type of person that he is.”
rarely offered any details of his basketball or private life other than what was necessary
It was simultaneously real and an act; Popovich has a much softer side as well — he quietly championed causes like the San Antonio Food Bank for years and wasn’t afraid to make his political views known
And those lucky enough to know him find him hilarious
“He has an amazing sense of humor,” Boston forward Jayson Tatum said while playing for Popovich during the Tokyo Olympics four years ago
“I guess the casual fan sees the person who does those interviews postgame
but that’s not the case of who he is at all
I absolutely love spending time with him.”
A loss in the 2013 NBA Finals crushed Popovich
whose Spurs were in position to close out the Miami Heat in six games
lost Game 6 in overtime after Ray Allen’s 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation kept the Heat alive
as Miami coach Erik Spoelstra embraced his staff
Thank you, Coach Pop, for your brilliance on and off the court. We look forward to our next chapter together. pic.twitter.com/4x6AFpSmQM

becomes the league’s longest-tenured in his current position
“He’s always just been an incredible example of class
“To be able to do that after wins or losses
I just think it’s a great example that you can still have class regardless of how the outcome comes during a game.”
When the Spurs beat the Heat for the title in a finals rematch in 2014
it was Spoelstra who felt the sting of losing
it was Popovich who sent congratulations on a job well done
“There is no one out there like Pop,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said
Connie Mack managed the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 years
George Halas coached the Chicago Bears for 40 years and John McGraw managed the New York Giants for 31 years
Those three tenures — all wrapping up well over a half-century ago — are the only ones exceeding the length of Popovich’s coaching run with the Spurs; his 29-year era in San Antonio was matched by the Dallas Cowboys’ Tom Landry and the Green Bay Packers’ Curly Lambeau
“It means I’m old,” Popovich said last year
Popovich broke a gender barrier of sorts in the league when he hired Becky Hammon as the league’s first female full-time paid assistant coach
would also become the first female head Summer League coach in the NBA and first female acting head coach when she replaced Popovich for a game in 2020
“Basketball is basketball,” South Carolina women’s coach Dawn Staley said when asked about Popovich in 2017
You need more people like Coach Popovich to give them opportunities to learn
I think he sees someone that has a great basketball mind
Popovich spoke about wine whenever he could and offered his views on politics and current events but rarely offered much insight into coaching decisions or personnel matters
which made sense given that Popovich was a graduate of the U.S
Look back at the legendary career of Gregg Popovich
a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
His love of country led to him taking a small side job during his San Antonio tenure — that being coaching USA Basketball for the 2019 World Cup and the Tokyo Olympics two years later
“It’s impossible to separate it if you have been in the military,” Popovich said when asked about the parallels of being at the Air Force Academy and coaching the country’s national team
“I’ve had classmates that have fought in wars — I have not — and some of them are no longer with us
You get an appreciation for people who have sacrificed
when you have an opportunity to do this for your country

Basketball Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich will no longer coach the San Antonio Spurs and is transitioning to a full-time role as the team's president of basketball operations
Mitch Johnson, who was named acting head coach after Popovich suffered a mild stroke in November
takes over head coaching duties permanently
Popovich has been involved with the team and present at San Antonio's facility in recent days
and will continue to be a vital member of the franchise's day-to-day operations
As much as he wanted to return to the sideline
he decided that he no longer could move forward with the taxing grind of being an NBA head coach
He has been making steady progress with his health in recovery from the November stroke
"While my love and passion for the game remain
I've decided it's time to step away as head coach," Popovich said in a statement
"I'm forever grateful to the wonderful players
community and city that are so meaningful to me."
Johnson, who led San Antonio to a 31-45 record in Popovich's absence, spent the past decade as an assistant with the Spurs organization. After a standout collegiate career at Stanford, he played for the Oklahoma City Thunder's NBA G League affiliate and went on to play professionally for three years in the G League and abroad
He then joined the Spurs as an assistant coach for the team's Austin G League team in 2016
the Spurs maintain the continuity and through line laid out by Popovich and CEO RC Buford
who was hired in the same 2016 offseason as Johnson
who gained tremendous support from the franchise's top officials and players
"I am truly grateful and honored to receive this incredible opportunity," Johnson said in the team's statement
Holt] trusting me to carry on our culture and I promise to give this responsibility everything I have to make Spurs fans proud."
Popovich, 76, began his Spurs career as an assistant coach under Larry Brown in 1988, serving in that role for four seasons before a brief stint under Don Nelson with the Golden State Warriors
He joined San Antonio's front office in 1994 and took over as head coach in December 1996
he fired Bob Hill after a 3-15 start and took over on the bench
After San Antonio missed the playoffs that season and landed the No
Popovich led the Spurs to 22 consecutive playoff seasons from 1998 to 2019

The legendary coach is the NBA's career wins leader with 1,422 regular-season victories and guided the team to five NBA championships
He is also a three-time NBA Coach of the Year winner
tied with Nelson and Pat Riley for the most in league history
Popovich ranks third in career playoff wins and is one of five coaches to win at least five titles
Popovich is credited as a pillar of the Spurs, partnering with Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard across a dynasty era of championships in 1999
Popovich seemed poised to again have a superstar player under his tutelage with the Spurs' selection of Victor Wembanyama with the top overall pick in the 2023 draft
He took to social media to thank his coach
for the culture you created...But most importantly for being a great and inspiring person
It was an honor to be a part of those 29 years🙏🏽 Wishing you the best on your new chapter.🐐
Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon spent seven seasons as an assistant under Popovich in San Antonio and praised him for the impact he had on her coaching career
"He's a huge reason why I have this job," Hammon said Friday
and I think what was always so amazing about Pop was just how he led," Hammon said
But I thought he always got the absolute most out of his roster
Popovich had an emotional meeting with Spurs players Feb. 27, and he issued a statement at that time that he wouldn't be returning this season but hoped to be back in the future. He was hospitalized April 15 after a medical incident at a San Antonio restaurant
but he returned home within days and reportedly has been feeling much better
Popovich was the oldest coach in NBA history
He agreed to a five-year contract extension with the team in 2023
He also served as the head coach of the United States men's national basketball team for the 2019 FIBA World Championships and the Tokyo Olympics
With Popovich stepping aside as coach, the title of longest-tenured active NBA head coach falls to Erik Spoelstra, who has led the Miami Heat since the 2008-09 season
Spoelstra and Popovich faced off in back-to-back NBA Finals in 2013 and 2014
The next-longest-tenured coach is Steve Kerr
who won the last two of his five championships as a player under Popovich before embarking on a successful coaching career with the Warriors in 2014

When the wine first pours at the table of Gregg Popovich
nobody takes a sip until the San Antonio Spurs coach raises his glass and makes a toast.
and he’ll say it … every time,” said Golden State coach Steve Kerr
Popovich retires with a record of 1,422-869 (.621 winning percentage)
His 170 playoff victories rank third all-time behind Phil Jackson and Pat Riley
He was a three-time NBA Coach of the Year and had 22 consecutive seasons with a winning record
he fulfilled a dream by coaching Team USA to the gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (which were held in 2021)
His decorated career was reinforced by the most basic of foundations: honesty
“Pop is a generational leader,” said Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra
his culture of accountability and team-first thinking was forged through full-throated challenges of his players
Players said his fiery and direct approach worked because he also showed unwavering compassion and care about them as people
“Players believed Pop cared about them individually before he cared about them as basketball players,” said Terry Porter
“It was never just about basketball for Pop
your wife — and that helps with the buy-in
Peers lauded him as a trendsetter who was willing to take risks
and a coach who continually adapted his playing style to fit his roster
His first title in 1999 was forged through the defense of twin towers
was defined by a dynamic offense that spaced the floor and toyed with chasing defenses with precision passing
“Part of his brilliance is he has always been able to adapt,” said Spoelstra
who squared off against Popovich in back-to-back NBA Finals
“The Spurs were always at the forefront of whatever that next style of play would be
they pounded you with two bigs and controlled the game defensively
when the 3-point line started to have more of an impact
Popovich’s vision was often unconventional
He first introduced what is now known as “load management” in 2012 when he sent home four of his starters before a marquee matchup against LeBron James and Miami
Popovich was irritated that the Spurs were thrust on national television while playing for the fourth time in five nights
The stunt incensed NBA commissioner David Stern
who slapped the Spurs with a $250,000 fine for “disservice to the league and fans.”
Popovich moved All-Star Manu Ginóbili from starter to reserve to create more balanced scoring
It was a move that initially stung Ginóbili
but after understanding his coach’s vision
which sparked the Spurs’ to their fourth title while underscoring Popovich’s overriding message that team goes before individual
Popovich has deflected credit for his success
or publicly in curmudgeonly interactions with the media
“He will be the first to say he doesn’t want to write a book
and he doesn’t want to do interviews to talk about himself,” said Houston Rockets coach Ime Udoka
“He says that nobody wants to hear what he does
that’s the beauty of Pop: the simplicity.”
Steve Kerr’s second year in San Antonio and 12th in the NBA
when Popovich took the sharp-shooter out of the rotation
“So I did the thing for a few games where I sat on the floor instead of on the bench,” Kerr said
it’s a subtle F-you as a player when you do that
‘One of the reasons we signed you is because we know who you are
and what you can mean to the fabric of the team with your work ethic and energy
I understand you are pissed about not being in the rotation
He never sat on the floor for the rest of his career
but we’re all human and have those moments,” Kerr said
“So what’s the best way to approach that as a coach
But he didn’t do it in a threatening manner
His film sessions during the Robinson-Duncan era were legendary for how pointed and forceful Popovich was
coaches give leeway to stars in film sessions
either because they understand the stars are shouldering bigger responsibilities
or because they want to keep a harmonious relationship
“He used to go at Timmy and David in film sessions
like yell at the top of his lungs,” Kerr said
who ranks ninth in all-time NBA wins and is the only coach to win titles at the college and NBA level
Popovich in 1986 was on sabbatical from his job as coach of Division III Pomona-Pitzer
and he spent the year as an unpaid assistant for Brown at the University of Kansas
When Brown was hired by San Antonio in 1988
Popovich was the best man at Brown’s wedding
“The thing Pop and I would talk about a lot
is that there’s a big difference between coaching and criticism,” Brown said
And all the great coaches have had this knack of not being afraid to tell players something when they truly believe they are right
he was never so stubborn that he demanded his way or the highway
Kevin Durant said during Team USA’s run to the gold medal in 2021
he pulled Popovich aside and pleaded to the coach to change the way the team defended
we need to start switching everything,'” Durant said
telling Durant he felt switching would cause the team to fall into lazy habits
Durant estimates the two went back and forth for nearly an hour until finally Popovich relented
“That’s one of the things I learned about him: He will get out of the way,” Durant said
“I had to spend an hour talking to him about it
Popovich’s ability to balance being a stern and direct perfectionist
yet also be willing to listen to ideas and make changes
was important for those who played under him
but he’s not like Riles,” Porter said of fellow legendary coach Pat Riley
Pop is very strong and vocal about his beliefs — very much into this is what we are
“He was willing to bend or wrinkle or pivot
the players would often be greeted by a world map
and he would ask us … Where is Italy at?” Miami forward Bam Adebayo said
Popovich called it “Where In the World?” — a tool to both educate and expand the conversation beyond basketball
he would often bring in guest speakers from outside of the basketball world
Porter — who played for him from 1999-2002 — said he would often begin practices with discussions about current events around the world
It’s why he first established what are now his renowned team dinners on the road
many teams around the NBA arrange for team dinners at some point in the season
“He just loved the idea of let’s go break bread and get away from the game,” Kerr said
“He even went to the point where he would have seating arrangements because he wanted certain guys sitting next to each other
Nobody else did that before Pop came along
Durant said his Olympic experience taught him why Popovich was so successful in San Antonio
and most of that understanding came away from the court
and just shoot the breeze about life,” Durant said
a person who cares about all those things on top of wanting you to be the best player you can be
then you want to go to work with that person
someone where things just flow organically
Said Brown: “I’ll give you this saying I live by: The greatest leaders
And the people they lead know the caring is genuine
Popovich’s fingerprints are all over the NBA today
with one game remaining on a six-game trip
he sent home to San Antonio the core of his team: Tony Parker
and TNT was broadcasting the game to a national audience
Instead of a marquee matchup of teams that would eventually clash in an epic seven-game Finals
TNT and commissioner David Stern watched as Popovich sent out a starting lineup of Patty Mills
I knew it was immediately two-pronged,” Kerr said
don’t schedule this game and make us play our fourth game in five nights
said Popovich’s decision to send players home was “unacceptable” and “substantial sanctions would be forthcoming.” The next day
Never mind that the Spurs nearly beat LeBron James
Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade — they were within one with 13 seconds before losing 105-100 — Popovich had made his point
“It was groundbreaking because fast-forward to today and we don’t do four games in five nights anymore,” Kerr said
“The league has really refined the schedule
The Miami game — fine be damned — was the start of a larger movement by Popovich to conserve his aging stars for the playoffs
He would hold out players during taxing stretches of the season to make sure they were fresh for April
The approach didn’t always work — in 2017-18
star Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs couldn’t agree on the proper balance between rehabilitation and returning to play
resulting in a standoff that saw Leonard play only nine games
Popovich was always an advocate for allowing players time to heal and play when ready
“Rest was a big thing with him,” Udoka said
He always talks about the best team he had was the one when Tim hurt his knee and sat out the ’99-00 playoffs
but that probably extended Tim’s career five years
he saw the big picture ahead of everyone else
load management or resting is common in the league
so much so that individual awards now have a 65-game criterion attached to discourage players from missing games to rest
Popovich is ironically known for a part of the game for which he is not fond: the 3-point shot
calling it “boring” and claiming “it’s not basketball.” But he knew he had to adapt and became known for two aspects of the 3-point shot: taking advantage of the corner 3 (think Bruce Bowen
Matt Bonner) and devising ways to defend the corner 3
“He was cutting edge,” longtime NBA coach and player Nate McMillan said
“Analytics weren’t really big until Pop started telling Bruce Bowen to only shoot in the corner
That’s the offense he created — if you are going to double-team Tim (Duncan)
whose career was resurrected after he came to San Antonio
shot 84 percent of his attempts from the corner during his time in San Antonio
says Popovich’s brilliance was really in how to defend the corner 3
we are not leaving the strong-side corner,” Kerr said
you held off the corner because it was only a 2-point shot
and you didn’t worry about a guy hitting a 2
But once the 3 really started coming into play
he recognized immediately that was the easiest one
and that it would be much more challenging to make players try to hit a 2 over Robinson or Duncan than it was to shoot an open 3
So I think he revolutionized corner 3-point defense more than anything.”
2024 suffered what the Spurs called a “mild stroke.” He did not return for the rest of the season as assistant Mitch Johnson led the team to a 32-45 record the remainder of the way (34-48 overall)
with his announcement to step away from coaching
the game has lost what many of his peers consider one of — if not the — greatest coach in NBA history
but they are things everyone struggles with
Current NBA coaches who either played for or coached under Popovich include Udoka in Houston
Brian Keefe in Washington and Quin Snyder in Atlanta
Notable former NBA coaches who mentored under Popovich include Mike Budenholzer
“I apply what he does to what I do; it’s the foundation of who I am as a coach,” Udoka said
you learn with Pop that either you are going to hold guys accountable or not
or are you going to sweep things under the rug
Popovich will once again raise his wine glass and toast to the player who helped him win five rings
but rather a reflection of how coach and player need to be one
(the toast) is his humility to deflect the praise and recognize that none of it happens without Tim,” Kerr said
but if they don’t win the lottery and get Tim Duncan
none of the philosophies really pan out and turn into championships

THE DRIVE FROM Keldon Johnson's ranch in Boerne
to the Frost Bank Center used to be predictable
But these days he has to leave early to account for the construction on seemingly every major highway in the area
Everything about the city and the San Antonio Spurs feels like it's growing -- bursting with new energy and residents who've come here to fill in all the wide-open space that used to define this part of Texas
Even before the Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama
that energy was inspiring to coach Gregg Popovich
"What's most enjoyable is they are like young
You start at the bottom and teach," he said in 2022
after years of leading a veteran-laden team
who at 25 is somehow the Spurs' longest-tenured player
Which is why they both arrived at the arena so early on the afternoon of Nov
Johnson was there to get extra work and treatment before a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves
was there to go through the pregame workout routine that had become essential as he made his way through the grind of an NBA season
But shortly after stepping away from his workout next to the team's locker room
Team staffers who were around while he was lifting weights knew something was off and grabbed him
according to sources with knowledge of the situation
Johnson heard the commotion as the coach began receiving medical attention
"But to see how everybody was talking about it was scary."
but Popovich was already being attended to by team staffers who would eventually lead him to an ambulance out of the arena to a nearby hospital
staffers and arena employees had any sense of what had happened
"Nobody really wanted to say anything," Johnson said
"Nobody wanted to let us in and tell us what was really going on
reporters gathered in the interview room for Popovich's pregame news conference
it wasn't completely out of the ordinary for Popovich to be late or miss one of these availabilities
he got caught in traffic on his way from the team's new practice facility
he has missed games for minor medical procedures or personal reasons
The assistant coach who had run the scouting on the night's opponent was usually appointed to fill in
So it didn't raise any eyebrows when Spurs longtime spokesman Tom James came into the room around 5:30 to announce that Popovich was "under the weather" and assistant coach Mitch Johnson would lead the team that night
word had begun to spread among the team that what had happened to Popovich -- the rock upon which one of the NBA's most successful franchises has been built -- was serious and perhaps life-threatening
It would take time for doctors to determine the extent of the damage Popovich suffered after what was deemed a mild stroke
Players weren't able to talk to him for weeks
It was several months before he was strong enough to walk and then stand in front of the team and speak directly to them
"It's been pretty tough for me," Johnson said
"He's been our role model since I got here
So much has happened in the five months since. The Spurs made a blockbuster trade to land All-NBA guard De'Aaron Fox. Stephon Castle has blossomed into the presumptive Rookie of the Year
Wembanyama looked every bit like the generational superstar he was billed to be before he was lost for the season with a blood clot in his arm
But Popovich hasn't coached since that night and won't coach again this season. Veteran Harrison Barnes said Popovich is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery
Another source said the coach has advanced in five months of rehab to the point where many who suffer strokes progress over nine months
no one knows yet whether he can return to the sidelines next season
The bond between Popovich and the Spurs has been so solid
that it fueled the rise of this proud franchise
Until Popovich stopped in his tracks that afternoon in November

a restaurant in Southtown featuring American fare
Over the next five years that he played for him
he invited Johnson to the national team camp
"I need you to be ready because I'm going out on a limb telling everybody you're ready." Johnson just assumed he was being invited to the junior team camp
But Popovich thought he was capable of more
choosing him for the Olympic team that competed in the Summer Olympics
"He's really shaped who I am as a young man," Johnson said
He's one of the best human beings I've ever been around
He treats everybody really well and puts everyone before himself."

although Popovich would have you believe he has played just a small role in establishing it
"I was tasked with the job to create an environment so we could have some success," he said at his Hall of Fame ceremony in 2023
a ceremony he delayed until the Hall of Fame players he coached -- David Robinson
Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker -- had been inducted
But the truth is Popovich's impact on basketball
"Pop is as good a coach as there has ever been in any sport," former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewzski
The two coaching lions have grown closer later in their professional lives
"We really got to know each other when he was named the national coach and I was still the national coach," Krzyzewski says
"We became real close and I wished I was that close with him my entire career."
He admired how Popovich had led his teams and tried to use his platform outside of coaching
Krzyzewski had the luxury of planning his retirement and choosing his successor [Jon Scheyer] when he retired in 2022 at age 75
He was ready to be done with all the travel and recruiting and demands of coaching a top college program
And he had a role with Duke and family life all set up and waiting for him
especially for this young team with Wembanyama as its leader
"It's Pop's decision," one person close to the situation told ESPN
THAT HAS BEEN the Spurs' succession plan for the better part of a decade
Popovich would take some time to digest the season and see if the fire still burned inside of him
trusting that Popovich would always be honest enough with himself to do what was best for the organization
Over the years, a half dozen assistant coaches were talked about as potential successors. First it was Mike Brown, Mike Budenholzer and Brett Brown
but they eventually got head coaching positions elsewhere
So it was Johnson who was named interim head coach in November
Compared to others who have been mentioned as possible successors
came up through the Spurs system and had earned a strong reputation in coaching circles after interviewing for a head coaching job last summer in Toronto

a former teammate of Johnson's at Stanford
the highest basketball IQ I've ever played with or been around," Lopez said
We actually called him "maestro" because of the way he conducts and runs the show."
Still, James, who has been the Spurs top communications official for 30 years after first joining the organization in 1988 as an intern, knew most of the media in Los Angeles weren't familiar with him before the team's game against the LA Clippers on November 4
our coach tonight is Mitch Johnson," James said in front of the room
a few minutes before Johnson stepped to the podium
The full extent of Popovich's situation was still coming into focus
officials revealed to the team that Popovich had suffered a stroke

It was an impossible update for the team to swallow
They'd spent the past two days not knowing what had happened

just a few steps away from the locker room

Mitch Johnson delivered his own heartfelt statement about Popovich before the game

to say he'd suffered a mild stroke and was expected to make a complete recovery
Popovich released a statement thanking everyone for the outpouring of support he'd received

They've quickly learned that I'm less than coachable."
Popovich announced that he would not return to the sidelines this season but hoped that he could return to coaching in the future
sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN
