The Barracuda (1-for-6) and Eagles (1-for-5) earned 11 total power-play opportunities in the game between the two teams
"That game was kind of the series," said Collin Graf
" We didn't want to go to Colorado down 0-2.”
Bystedt successfully fed the puck across to Schuldt but Miner stood tall to keep the game scoreless
and then flattening Polin again as he regained control of the puck
The Barracuda outshot Colorado 14-6 in the period
"[Regenda] had one shift where he had those two big hits," said Barracuda Head Coach John McCarthy
going in first for loose pucks type of physicality that he's shown
He's willing to go to the net-front and get inside
obviously he's the power-play net front guy
Has done a lot of good things from a physical standpoint."
who picked the top corner past Askarov to break the stalemate
But with less than two minutes left in the middle period and the Eagles enjoying their third power play, Pavol Regenda forced former Shark Jacob MacDonald into a turnover
That led to a two-on-none give and go with Colin White
who deftly fed the puck back to Regenda and he buried it top shelf past Miner
both teams traded chances with the shot count in favor of the Barracuda 13-8
Colorado nearly had the go-ahead goal from a shot by MacDonald
the puck was deemed not to have crossed the line
and the Barracuda earned their sixth power-play of the evening
Askarov made one save on the man-advantage to keep the game even at one and helped force overtime
The overtime game was the first time San Jose needed the extra frames to settle the score
2019 at San Diego in the Division Semifinals
San Jose started on the power-play with 1:12 left from the penalty by Stephens and just 27 seconds in the extra frame
Gushchin sealed the game with the team’s lone power-play strike to even the series
passed across the slot to Graf who gave it right back to him and with a backhanded shot at the top of the crease
the puck squeezed by Miner after glancing off of Wagner's skate
who registered his fifth point in the playoffs
love that we got the two points," said McCarthy
"Power-play stepped up big there at the end."

a monthly forum in which readers can ask me anything hockey related and I try my best to deliver an insightful answer
Note: the questions below were lightly edited for clarity and brevity
phonyspoon asks: If my Sharks win the draft lottery again
I've heard of the offensive prowess of players like Michael Misa and James Hagens
which finished last in 2024-25 with 52 points
has a league-high 25.5% chance of landing the top pick in Monday's draft lottery
Chicago (13.5%) and Nashville (11.5%) are the others with double-digit odds
Schaefer's the obvious choice for two basic reasons
the Canadian defenseman is arguably the best player in the 2025 class
The Sharks already have a franchise center in 2024 first overall pick Macklin Celebrini
get yourself a complementary cornerstone blue-liner
Schaefer's an extremely intelligent player and elite skater who's capable of controlling the game like prime Drew Doughty
The OHL sophomore hasn't played in months after breaking his collarbone at the December world juniors
San Jose used its second 2024 first on defenseman Sam Dickinson
Dickinson brings a little bit of everything to the table
and projects to be a top-pair guy in the NHL
is "one of the 10 best defensemen on the planet." His meh outcome
Dickinson and Shakir Mukhamadullin are San Jose's only exciting D-men 22 or under right now
whereas the forward group of the future is headlined by Celebrini (18)
asks: When a trailing team has pulled their goalie and the leading team has a breakaway to score an empty-net goal
why doesn't the trailing team's player on the heels of the puck carrier just tackle the guy
That way the trailing team could bring their goalie back in for the penalty shot and at least have a chance of not giving up another goal
but if the puck carrier's tackled under these circumstances
The NHL's official rulebook lays it out clearly in Rule 25.1:
A goal will be awarded to the attacking team when the opposing team has taken their goalkeeper off the ice and an attacking player has possession and control of the puck (or would have gained possession and control) in the neutral or attacking zone
without a defending player between himself and the opposing goal
and he is prevented from scoring as a result of an infraction committed by the defending team
asks: What's the most common statistical trait of a Stanley Cup-winning team
My best guess is playoff goaltending with a save percentage above .910
but perhaps that's not the most unique stat to review when considering playoff success
The Stanley Cup winner has finished with a team save percentage above .910 in 13 of 19 seasons in the salary cap era
Three others narrowly missed the cut: the 2013-14 Kings had a .910 SV%
while the 2008-09 Penguins and 2018-19 Blues were .908 and .907 clubs
A penalty kill rate of 80% or higher also correlates well
Only four cap-era champions dipped below 80% (and the 2014-15 Blackhawks were at 79%)
I think the strongest signal of a Cup champ is an ability to bounce back in the middle of playoff games
All but four cap-era Cup winners were credited with at least four comeback wins during their respective runs
Four comebacks is an average of one per round.)
no matter how talented on paper and dominant shift-to-shift
is bound to trail for stretches on the road to 16 wins
Five champs averaged two or more comebacks per round: the 2005-06 Hurricanes (nine)
Florida's the consensus Cup favorite right now
The defending champs look unstoppable partly because nobody's counterpunch is as strong as theirs
ebeck02893 asks: How do you foresee the new NCAA eligibility rule changing players' paths through the Canadian Hockey League
17-year-olds play in the CHL and all the best 18 or older players go to the NCAA or NHL
I think there's no way the USHL doesn't get ruined by this
Some context: the NCAA announced last November that it's lifting a longtime ban on players who've played major-junior hockey in Canada. As noted in the question, the landmark decision has opened the door for high-end teens to play in the CHL and NCAA
A total of 133 players from the CHL's three leagues - WHL, OHL, QMJHL - have committed to American colleges, according to Sportsnet's signing tracker
but keep in mind most of the commits are older and not considered serious NHL prospects
Flames third-round pick Henry Mews is probably the biggest name to make the list so far
While the amateur hockey landscape is changing
I don't think "all" the best North American teens will follow the same path of Canadian junior at 16 and 17 and American college at 18 and onwards
One NHLPA player agent with a few clients still debating next steps told me that while the eligibility change creates more options
some players are simply far better suited for one of the routes
and also may offer six-figure NIL deals in some cases
"Most players on the fence are going to want to wait to see which NHL team drafts them before committing to any kind of change," the agent said
"They want to get a feel for what their team thinks is best for their development."
A major NCAA headline may soon be on the way
the consensus top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft
The Canadian has nothing left to prove in junior after posting 1.8 points per game over three WHL seasons
It makes sense for him to play his draft year at a major college like the University of Michigan
ddoroy39224 asks: What's wrong with the Buffalo Sabres
I like a lot of the individual pieces in Buffalo
But they haven't clicked cohesively on the ice
the roster ranks as one of the league's youngest
The group desperately needs to add some useful veterans with playoff pedigree this offseason
The Sabres aren't just in a rut; they've failed to make the playoffs for a record 14th straight year
what GM Kevyn Adams said earlier this season is true: there are no palm trees in Buffalo and New York taxes are high
The cap is going to rise exponentially over the next few years and Buffalo better flip the spending switch soon or the gap between it and playoff teams will further widen

When it comes to the Bay Area’s air quality report card
The American Lung Association has ranked the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area among the nation’s worst for air pollution: 14th for ozone pollution
11th for short-term particle pollution and sixth for year-round particle pollution
Unhealthy air is making Bay Area residents sicker
damaging lungs and worsening respiratory illnesses such as asthma
The impacts of worsening air quality disproportionately impact low-income Black and brown communities who are often left behind
This alarming health risk demands strong and decisive action
which contributes to the formation of smog
These rules are necessary for achieving legally binding air quality standards that protect health and wellbeing
They must be implemented affordably and on schedule to ensure cleaner air for all Bay Area residents
and ensure households aren’t stuck with a polluting appliance for another 15 or 20 years
That means more money for lifesaving medications or to put food on the table
a trend likely to continue as more households choose to electrify
The health benefits associated with greater heat pump adoption also come with cost savings
Upgrading to heat pumps slashes health-harming air pollution that can worsen respiratory illnesses such as asthma
Fewer visits to the doctor’s office or hospital room mean saving families money from costly medical bills
homes in the Bay Area will begin the transition from polluting
lung-damaging gas equipment to state-of-the-art
more affordable future for families in the region
A future in which every Bay Area resident and child can breathe clean air and live healthy

Once again California residents are being forced into a flawed vision electrification
Electric heat pumps are expensive to install because houses need to upgrade their electrical panels
Old house weren’t built for this type of demand
the fact is those funds run out quite frequently and plumbers are caught in the middle
most electric heat pumps have a ready port for PG&E to dial down your usage
If you’re looking at the numbers for Santa Clara county
don’t forget SJC is right in the middle of the city which is horribly dirty and skews any number
Oh but they will force us to move to electric
I will not even mention the problems PG&E has with supplying electricity today let alone in 2027
Tankless should be an option along with electric heat pumps
How much do they cost and if I have a gas stove and gas furnace do we also have to replace our water heater when the stove breaks down
This could cost thousands and if you are not low income what do you do
I feel the truck traffic running through my neighborhood at 280 and S
7th and Alma this will only increase traffic for us that live in poor neighborhoods
Nobody talks about the pollution from Reid-Hillview airport and all the private planes that go and come and cause noise and air pollution
Seems like someone is going to make money off of this and so many people are struggling right now
My understanding is PG&E is working with our state to not give solar credit to schools and others because they don’t want to lose any profits so again residents in California are always made to paid for things they can’t afford

Aku’s BBQ brings a new level of high-end izakaya standards
What really makes his skewers excellent is that
they are juicy and tender on the inside instead of drying out
He adds his own flare through his toppings and marinades
is made with Sichuan tare and balanced with a bright
“Yakitori is something I’ve made all my life,” says Ku
“My family loved to do backyard barbecues.”
There’s also a rotating izakaya menu with options like prawn toast and onigiri
the menu features Japanese beef curry bowls and Taiwanese lu rou fan
Warm months feature salads and fermentations
He also tailors the menu around events — for example
a pop-up at a hot and loud nightclub was matched with a bold
spicy dish of smoked pork belly with pickled plums and grilled
pickled Jimmy Nardello peppers along with a frisée salad for a cooling contrast
“The menu is a little bit seasonal and also depends on the mood that I’m in,” says Ku
a seared ball of sushi rice topped with tamago furikake and ikura (salmon roe)
It’s a chewy umami bomb with a slight crunch on the outside from the scorched rice
a slice of shokupan stacked with tiger prawns
and showcases a fun dynamic between the opposing textures of the crunchy toast and the creamy topping
Ku’s decision to start Aku’s BBQ is tied to his fond memories of making yakitori as a child — he recalls these meals as one of the few opportunities he had to slow down and enjoy a meal with the people he loved
He learned to make yakitori by watching Japanese cooking shows with his mom
He also found inspiration on his yearly visits to Taiwan where he fell in love with the night markets and the smoky meats grilled over charcoal
He still sees yakitori as a way to connect with others
He sets the vibe by putting on a cooking show of his own with puffs of smoke and dancing flames
Although Ku has been making yakitori for years
Aku’s BBQ is very much just getting started
He’s looking forward to embarking on this new journey and introducing his style of yakitori to people across the Bay
“I don’t have plans on being tied to a brick and mortar any time soon,” says Ku
but a little more sustainably on my health and the business — it’s a little bit of a pirate ship.”

earning unanimous All-American honors in a year where he caught an FBS-leading 16 touchdowns
He hauled in 104 passes for 1382 yards during his standout season
But SJSU did retain key pieces on its offense and defense
Starting quarterback Walker Eget is still in San Jose and is set to embark on his redshirt senior season with the Spartans without Emmett Brown there to create competition
Eget took the reins and finished the year with 2504 yards and 13 touchdowns
While he’s not going to be on a draft board anytime soon
keeping some level of continuity at the QB position is a decent-sized victory at the Group of Five level
With him returns leading rusher Floyd Chalk, who rushed for 721 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

– Colorado forward Jayson Megna notched two goals and an assist
while goaltender Trent Miner made 25 saves on 28 shots
as the Eagles defeated the San Jose Barracuda 6-3 in Game One of their Pacific Division Semifinal Series
Four different Eagles finished the night with multi-point performances
with five different Colorado skaters finding the back of the net
The Eagles dominated the battle on specialty teams
finishing 2-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill
After shutting down the game’s first power play
Colorado would go on to net the game’s first goal
A bit of transition set up Megna to dish the puck to the slot
where defenseman Calle Rosen hammered it home
giving the Eagles a 1-0 edge with 3:44 remaining in the first period
The Barracuda would go on to outshoot Colorado 12-6 in the opening 20 minutes
but the Eagles would head to the first intermission still leading
A power play early in the second period would allow Colorado forward Chris Wagner to slice to the top of the crease
before deflecting a shot from the point into the back of the net
putting the Eagles up 2-0 at the 3:02 mark
Another opportunity on the man-advantage would lead to another goal
as Megna swatted a rebound in the crease past goalie Yaroslav Askarov
extending Colorado’s advantage to 3-0 with 12:41 still to play in the middle frame
San Jose would then flip the script on the penalty kill
as forward Filip Bystedt capped off a shorthanded breakaway with a wrister from the slot
trimming the deficit to 3-1 at the 8:25 mark of the second stanza
A delayed penalty against the Barracuda would allow Eagles defenseman John Ludvig an opportunity to light the lamp with a shot from the top of the right-wing circle
giving Colorado a 4-1 lead with 2:05 remaining in the period
Still trailing 4-1 as the puck dropped on the third period
San Jose would inch back when forward Collin Graf buried a shot from the right-wing corner
slicing the Eagles advantage to 4-2 at the 13:16 mark
With Askarov on the bench in favor of the extra attacker
Barracuda forward Collin White would capitalize when he beat Miner from the slot with a wrister
pulling the score to 4-3 with 2:19 still left to play
Askarov would again head to the bench to bring out an additional attacker
but it would be Colorado who would take advantage with an empty-netter from Megna at the 18:29 mark and fellow forward Tye Felhaber just 1:01 later
The Eagles will be back in action when they take on the San Jose Barracuda in Game Two of the Pacific Division Semifinals on Sunday
May 4th at 7:05pm MT at Tech CU Arena in San Jose

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan is endorsing Anthony Tordillos in the upcoming runoff election for the District 3 seat on the City Council
“I look forward to helping him over the next 53 days
and I’m excited to see him assume that seat,” Mahan said Friday
“We may have different emphases on exactly which lever is going to move the needle faster
but I actually think that’s a feature
Mahan said he hoped to build a coalition in City Hall centered around more data
technological advances and less “ideology.”
“I truly do believe we are building a coalition,” Tordillos said Friday. “We also share a belief that elected officials need to be held accountable for delivering results as they progress, and that just like in the private sector, elected officials shouldn’t be given automatic pay raises.”
A tech worker with Google by day and chair of the San Jose Planning Commission by night, Tordillos fashioned his political campaign as a white-collar worker continuing the legacy and dreams of his working-class family background
Tordillos’ role as planning commission chair is overseeing the first line of approval for many of San Jose’s largest housing proposals — most of which he has supported
He told San José Spotlight he shares Mahan’s sense of urgency in building up the city’s temporary shelter capacity
But housing advocates have been concerned the prioritization of “interim housing” in San Jose could lead to an indefinite redirecting of funds meant for permanent affordable housing
“Sometimes that (focus) aligns with the mayor
But my commitment to a D3-centered agenda hasn’t wavered
and it won’t,” she told San José Spotlight
fueled by the trust and support of residents across the district.”
Tordillos will face off against Chavez-Lopez in a June 24 runoff election
Original story published May 2 at 8:35 a.m
Contact Nick Preciado at [email protected]. Contact Vicente Vera at [email protected] or follow @VicenteJVera on X
Anthony Tordillos didn’t abruptly move into the district once it became apparent that a seat in D3 would become open
Gabby Chavez-Lopez is an opportunist carpetbagger
Gabby bought a house & moved to District 6 in 2022
she should have run for the District 6 seat in 2024
While the difference between the two mayors’ style and competence is glaring
Mahan’s endorsement will result in casting the notorious curse of Chuck Reed on Tordillos
> “Mayor Mahan and I don’t agree on every issue
we share a belief that data should drive policy discussions
and elected officials should be evaluated by the results they deliver on housing
homelessness and crime,” Tordillos previously told San José Spotlight
so obviously we make smart choices based on evidence” messaging
LOOK at Mahan’s actual tech experience — did he ever invent anything that actually brought any value to anyone
or did he create a failed app in the early 2010’s when it was en vogue to do that kind of thing
and everyone just agreed to treat it like he was a successful entrepreneur
Mahan got a scholarship to a Harvard feeder school for boys based on his uncle
and pretty much all of his life has been him riding on the prestige that those circumstances of birth afforded him
If Tordillos looks at this guy and relates to him
maybe he’s not as impressive of a guy as I first thought
I was wondering whether Tordillos was a potential counter to Mahan’s techno-fascist approach to the many social problems in San Jose
one of the biggest being the issue of housing for the unhoused
But his cozying up to Mahan and the “we SV types” is a real eye-opener and a reason to look a lot more carefully
Too many people have tried to benefit from the Silicon Valley “brand” without looking under the hood or even demonstrating that they have any critique of the negatives of Silicon Valley (and there are many.) Tordillos just dropped several notches in my estimation
If he was politically more critical and if he had more leadership capability
thank you” to Mahan and he could have done it without burning too many bridges
Like Gabby wouldn’t have taken the Mayor’s endorsement if he offered it to her

The San Jose Barracuda tied the series against the Colorado Eagles after a 2-1 win in a game that went to overtime on Sunday
The teams meet again for Game 3 on Tuesday
he revealed on Friday in a social media post
Once a 4-star prospect and considered one of the headliners of Kalen DeBoer's 2023 UW recruiting class
177-pound sophomore defensive back from Seattle exited three weeks into spring practice
apparently figuring he needed to go somewhere else to draw meaningful playing time
against Weber State in last season's opener
Presley wasn't going to unseat Tacario Davis or Ephesians Prysock
who are the projected first-teamers at corner and set to become three-year starters counting their time spent at Arizona and the UW
Let’s Work⌛️💯 pic.twitter.com/prCqGa9Hww
While injuries seemed to slow him early on at the UW
Presley otherwise just got bogged down on the depth chart
He originally committed to Oregon when coming out of Rainier Beach High School
set to follow former Vikings teammate and vaunted offensive lineman Josh Conerly Jr
to the Ducks before the Huskies flipped Presley and convinced him to stay home and play
Yet it didn't happen for him with two different UW coaching staffs for any number of reasons so he'll head to San Jose State
which sent linebacker Bryun Parham to the Huskies last year
Presley is one of three UW players who have entered the transfer portal during this window with redshirt freshman offensive lineman Michael Levelle Watkins going to San Diego State and long snapper Cameron Warchuck still looking

The second phase of one of Los Gatos’ largest and most controversial development projects is one step closer to a vote after years of delays and revisions
It also proposes about 8 acres of open space and 768 parking spaces on the site’s approximately 15.6 acres
The planning commission will review the project again at a later date once its environmental review is finished
before the development heads to Town Council
Commissioner Rob Stump wanted to ensure developers didn’t go back on the promised affordable housing if the town council approves the project — a sticking point for the commission because previous proposals included more affordable homes
The well-heeled town doesn’t have many affordable housing options
The average annual household income was $207,891 between 2019 and 2023
“We need more affordable housing,” Stump said at the meeting
Wouldn’t it be great if it could yield a few more
Grosvenor senior vice president of development of American properties
said the developer included as much affordable housing as possible while keeping the project financially feasible
“My hopes are that we can start as soon as possible and get housing built and delivered to town,” Buster told San José Spotlight
“There’s definitely a need for renters and for new buyers and new owners that want to live in Los Gatos
The project site is a prime development location in Los Gatos’ housing plan
The town must build nearly 2,000 homes by 2031 to comply with state mandates
847 of which must be affordable to low-income residents
A few residents voiced concerns about the effects the development could have on the surrounding neighborhoods at the commission meeting
but more than a dozen people spoke in support of it
That support was largely because of the affordable housing for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Los Gatos resident Katherine Mancuso said she’d love if her 28-year-old son
He’s lived in a supportive apartment in Santa Clara for about a year
But he doesn’t drive and Mancuso wants him closer to his support network
Pamela Emanuel lives in one of those homes and supports the second phase of development
She said more affordable housing creates more opportunities for Black and brown residents like her to move there and diversify the predominantly white town
She’s been part of the community for 20 years and couldn’t afford to live in Los Gatos without the affordable apartment
“(It’s) total relief… knowing that I can be able to afford to pay my rent and not have to move out of the community that I’ve raised my kids in all these years,” Emanuel told San José Spotlight

Can anyone tell me why the State is continuing to push for new housing to be built when the forecast is for ZERO population growth in the State thru 2050
There isn’t enough housing for who’s already here
Homelessness is like the #1 issue in Santa Clara County

The Happy Hound in Los Gatos has served a menu of classic American diner fare: assorted hamburgers
as attested by the loyalty of longtime customers such as Gary Snyder
who said he only needs to wave his hand to workers at the counter to place his regular order of two mustard dogs
“I’ve been coming here for over 40 years,” he told San José Spotlight
but the employees are what keeps me coming back — there are some wonderful people here.”
Not much has changed at the 23-seat diner since it first opened. The Happy Hound is still family owned
and the hot dogs are still all-beef and eight inches long
co-owner and grandson of founder Hugh Dresslar
“We’ve added things here and there to accommodate vegetarians,” Quinet told San José Spotlight
“But we haven’t changed where we get our food
The diner has its roots in the successful Hound Dog Restaurant in Danville
She had no experience in the restaurant business and financed it by borrowing against her car
banker and now-ex-husband Hugh Dresslar glanced through her books and spotted potential
So he took from what she was doing and opened this place
took it over in 1987 and gave nephew Quinet a job when he had personal difficulties
but he absorbed everything he could from his uncle
“He was the most kind-hearted person I’ve ever met,” Quinet said
and few quick-serve restaurants can say that about their people.”
the menu’s lead-off is different takes on all-beef hot dogs
which are steamed but can be grilled on request
Other variations include hot dogs with chili or sauerkraut
corn dogs (with a vegetarian version available)
jalapeños and Angry Sauce — a kicked-up must-try version of Thousand Island dressing that can be substituted on request with any item or ordered separately
The Mexi-Hound is the sleeper on the menu: a hot dog
and the meat and bean chili carries just enough heat to register without being overbearing
Quinet said the diner’s mainstay is its burgers
said she appreciates the burgers as much as she does the “family-oriented vibe.”
“They are terrific,” she told San José Spotlight
Quinet works closely with vendors to ensure the meat is delivered frequently
He periodically has his employees and regular customers do taste tests to ensure everyone is happy with the food
“I think we’re one of the few places still offering that kind of quality,” he said
“It’s a big portion-size burger at about the same price as what our competitors are getting for a fast-food burger
which can be ordered as singles or doubles
A tortilla-wrapped Mexi-Burger matches the Mexi-Hound in style and ingredients
and turkey and chicken burgers are also available
A BLT with six slices of bacon on a French roll is available
is the go-to for 16-year veteran employee Sarai Mejia
Side orders include beautifully prepared beer-battered onion rings
golden-brown tater tots and shoestring fries that beat any that a famous chain makes
cheese and Parmesan cheese are available as add-ons
Milkshakes include all the standards and offer specialties like blackberry
The Happy Hound is as old-fashioned as you can get
and Quinet is determined to please them every way he can with the diner’s food and service
“You see the same faces a couple of times a week or with their parents on weekends
We greet them with a smile and bring their food out instead of calling their number
That’s the personal experience I would want when I go out to eat.”

President Donald Trump’s latest attack on housing comes as he proposes major overhauls to rental assistance programs meant to help people from falling into homelessness
Trump wants to impose a two-year cap on rental assistance for people who don’t have a disability
“The reduction in funds is problematic,” Sandy Perry
board vice president of South Bay Community Land Trust
“There’s a lot of these states (where) I don’t trust them to have effective programs
A lot of (them) are controlled by legislators and legislatures who literally don’t care if people live or die.”
Trump’s proposals provide a guide for congressional negotiations on what policies to implement when the new federal fiscal year starts Oct
he also proposed major cuts to the housing voucher program
and currently evaluating the devastating impact this will have on our community if Congress passes such a draconian budget that includes a significant reduction in funding to (HUD) for rental assistance programs,” Preston Prince
executive director of Santa Clara County Housing Authority
which administers Section-8 housing vouchers
The agency has 20,000 households enrolled in its housing voucher programs
investing $45 million each month to keep families and individuals housed
These Section-8 vouchers are vital for low-income families
as they allow them to only pay 30% of their income for rent while the federal government subsidizes the rest
cuts to the (housing voucher) program hurt landlords
property owners and the larger economy by reducing reliable income
reducing property values and undermining the financial stability of properties that rely on predictable housing payments to meet mortgage and maintenance obligations,” Preston said
property owners and neighborhoods would suffer without these vital rental payments.”
It’s unclear what budget changes will happen at HUD
but advocates said Trump’s policies mirror an attack on the Housing First model
The philosophy behind this model is housing should be offered to homeless people without strings attached to provide immediate stability
whereas previous models like Treatment First required sobriety or employment before obtaining permanent housing
The idea is that once people are stably housed
they can then have the capacity to address other issues
In March, Trump ordered the dismantling of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, which coordinates policies and federal agencies to end homelessness largely through a housing first approach. The 20 staff members were put on administrative leave last month, according to NPR
Gutting the Interagency Council on Homelessness provides one less way for local governments to receive information from the federal government, Ray Bramson, chief operating officer of Destination: Home and San José Spotlight columnist
“There is an assault on housing first,” Tristia Bauman
directing attorney of housing at Law Foundation of Silicon Valley
“What that assault seems to look like is … not only has housing first failed and we should use our resources otherwise
but (Trump’s policies) also include a really strong criminalization component and divestment of housing solutions.”
Contact Joyce Chu at [email protected] or @joyce_speaks on X
Housing first has been shown to be completely ineffective the way it’s been implemented todate
We must get people into treatment centers and off the street then into temp and permanent housing
It completely illogical to do it the other way(current) way
There isn’t an assault on Housing First
There is simply a growing acknowledgment that the model just doesn’t work for certain subpopulations – particularly those with severe mental illness and addiction who need actual treatment – not an empty apartment and a HomeFirst case manager
the elderly and those with intellectual disabilities
where affordability is root cause of homelessness
The County Behavioral Health system needs to step in and step up for the thousands who need actual treatment and Housing First vouchers/options should be prioritized for families
elderly and those without severe mental illness/addiction
This is glaringly obvious for those of us who live downtown and in other impacted areas – not so much for those living out of impacted areas who have been parroting the same ideas for 15+ years

SAN JOSE BARRACUDA (36-26-5-4, 81 pts., 6th PAC) vs. COLORADO EAGLES (43-21-5-3, 94 pts., 1st PAC)
FRI, MAY 2, 2025 | 7:00 PM | TECH CU ARENA | SAN JOSE, CA
Familiar Face: Eagles defenseman and former Sharks/Barracuda blueliner Jacob MacDonald had a record-breaking 2024-25 campaign, scoring 31 goals—the most by a defenseman in the AHL’s 89-year history. He led all AHL defensemen in points (55), goals, power-play goals (13), and game-winning goals (5). He also ranked second in shots (197), shooting percentage (15.7%), and fourth in power-play points (23). MacDonald was named the league's Eddie Shore winner as top defenseman.
Asky Basky: Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov was stellar in the opening round, going 2-0 with a 0.50 goals-against average, a .979 save percentage, and one shutout. On Thursday, he became the first Barracuda goalie to record a Calder Cup Playoff shutout since Troy Grosenick on May 13, 2017, in San Diego. In 19 career AHL appearances, the 22-year-old is 10-9 with a 2.61 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Askarov went 0-4 versus the Eagles during the regular season but is 2-5 lifetime.
Playoff Punch: The Barracuda are back in the playoffs for the first time since the 2020–21 season and return to the Calder Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2018–19. SJB’s sweep of the Reign was the first sweep in franchise history.
Powering Up: The Barracuda finished the regular season with a league-best 24.0% success rate on the power play. Danil Gushchin led the AHL in power-play goals (14), while Andrew Poturalski finished tied for second (13). Luca Cagnoni led the league in power-play points (34). The Barracuda also led the league in power plays drawn (287) and total power-play goals (69)—a new single-season franchise record. During the regular season against Colorado, the Barracuda went 8-for-28 on the PP.
Bursting Pipes: The Barracuda used eight players during the 2024–25 season who were drafted by the organization, including four picks in the last two years (Luca Cagnoni, Filip Bystedt, Igor Chernyshov, and Quentin Musty). Seventeen players split time between the Sharks and Barracuda, including U23 skaters Yaroslav Askarov (G), Ethan Cardwell (F), Luca Cagnoni (D), Jack Thompson (D), and Collin Graf (F).

It was the first overtime playoff goal in San Jose since Apr
when the San Jose Sharks’ Barclay Goodrow eliminated the Vegas Golden Knights in Game Seven double OT
but it’s nice to have playoff hockey back in San Jose
And Cuda wins the game as soon as OT starts! 2-1 pic.twitter.com/4U4DpvRfQP

the Barracuda can bring it back to San Jose for another round: Their second-round series is now 1-1
all in Colorado to decide the five-game set
Game Three is at Blue Arena on Tuesday at 6 PM PT
and Pavol Regenda potted a pivotal short-handed goal
this looked like a game that Barracuda special teams might be responsible for losing
They had already given up a Calle Rosen power play goal
and the Cuda power play was 0-4 up to this point
including blowing a double-minor PP to start the second period
And they were in the midst of killing a Luca Cagnoni cross-checking penalty
Pavol Regenda made an outstanding individual play
taking the puck from ex-San Jose Sharks defenseman Jacob MacDonald
this year’s Eddie Shore Award winner for the AHL’s best blueliner
— FloHockey (@FloHockey) May 5, 2025
That’s what [PK coach Louis Mass] wants from us
“We were lucky that Whitey was right there
because my breakaways this year are not really good.”
Instead of being down 1-0 or worse headed into the final frame
Regenda has been an under-the-radar great acquisition by Barracuda GM Joe Will
acquired from the San Diego Gulls in January for Justin Bailey
in his first pro playoff action in North America
has become a net front power play staple and handled the post-season’s greater speed and physicality with zest
Captain Jimmy Schuldt says the Barracuda medical staff has been preparing them for the Colorado altitude: “Beet juice
which is more than even Shore Award winner MacDonald
Ahcan was helped off the ice during the first intermission
but an Ahcan injury could be a series-changer
San Jose had a 16-14 Home Plate Shot Attempts edge
Colorado thumped them in that scoring chance category
So Askarov still had his work cut out for him
a testament to his importance to the Barracuda in all situations
Barracuda head coach John McCarthy didn’t rule out Thomas Bordeleau and Andrew Poturalskil traveling to Loveland with the team tomorrow
but McCarthy didn’t rule out a return for either in this series
Top San Jose Sharks prospect Quentin Musty impressed in his AHL playoff debut
using his size and skating to be a constant forechecking pest in his 11:29 of playing time
“He’s an important part of our organization and wanted to expose him to a playoff game,” McCarthy said
has an ability to finish which was the thinking behind putting him in.”
McCarthy also had lots of praise for Walker Duehr
who stepped in for healthy scratch Ethan Cardwell
While the power play only went 1-for-6 — they’re 2-for-18 in the playoffs so far
disappointing for the top PP in the AHL — Collin Graf saw signs of life
“That first power play really set the tone for us
So while they struggled at times until the Gushchin winner
their revival could be a difference-maker in this series
leading both teams with 11 shot attempts and hitting a crossbar too
but the Barracuda did a better job of protecting him than they did in Game One
“Making sure that we didn’t give them any easy offense [with turnovers].”

Regenda really has stood out in both games
I didn’t even know they’d traded for him
but yeah he looks way better than Bailey did in the couple games I saw him in earlier in the year
Curious if he’s an AHL lifer or if he might ever get a shot in the NHL
Two big days in a row for the future of the franchise
featuring Quentin Musty in his first ever pro playoff action
Leave work early and get your teal margaritas ready
Don’t forget Askarov with the win in OT
Definitely another good reason to sip a teal marg
Every game this team plays in the playoffs is investment in the Sharks future
but that bad decision on the PK in game 1 — I guess that needed a message
Good that this team is competing well against a very good Colorado team
Guys like Cagnoni and Graf need to experience the dog fight of AHL playoff hockey
Guys like Giles and Askarov can build on AHL playoff success as major steps towards an NHL career
He’s made some questionable decisions coming out of the rebuild
but it feels like he’s a casualty of the divisional playoff format to some extent
They’ve effectively stalled (something the Sharks must avoid)
credit to their players and coaching (though that bad challenge was so costly in the series)
More competitive than the roster would suggest
Kopitar and Doughty will start to really age and I’m not sure the next generation is going to be enough
Even if Byfield and Clarke are going… Read more »
they’ll have to make a significant play to add talent on the open market as a result
Never great to be doing that from a position of genuine need
the Sharks are probably going to get a firsthand lesson in that reality this summer when they’re trying to revamp the defense
They’ll want to be in Marner bidding
Their cap space is going to be a challenge
at least one good asset might need to leave in order to pull that off
I’d disagree and say the kings should have
and would have won that series with different coaching
and his decision to turtle and shorten the bench gassed out and killed his team
Oilers took some games to gel and they missed the boat due to his coaching decisions
That’s my take on that series anyway
I don’t think GMs who get the job on the basis of being the best former player for the same team who wants the job tend to be in demand
Mostly because all the other teams are giving their jobs to the best retired player they have who wants the job
Can the Sharks know their lottery spot before the 3rd overall pick is revealed
depending on certain events which happen earlier in it
The world’s largest sporting event — the FIFA World Cup — is coming to the United States in 2026
and Santa Clara is one of the only cities not breaking the bank to prepare
a data analysis by San José Spotlight shows
“You have these other places that are taking some risks (and) we’re taking a much more conservative approach,” Santa Clara Councilmember Karen Hardy told San José Spotlight
“That means (our) profit may be lower because of that
Santa Clara has not spent any general fund money on Levi’s Stadium, but the city is looking into marketing and revenue generation opportunities for 2026, while hosting Super Bowl 60 and the World Cup
The Bay Area Host Committee is paying $25 million to modify the stadium’s field per FIFA regulations
The Santa Clara City Council approved a reimbursement agreement with the host committee in February for most World Cup-related expenses
Zaileen Janmohamed
president and CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee
said they have multiple partnerships with local businesses
She’s confident the committee will meet its financial targets to host the Super Bowl and World Cup games in 2026
Every host committee submitted a joint federal funding request of $625 million
the Bay Area Host Committee partnered with FIFA World Cup 26 Los Angeles to submit a joint funding request to the state
“We’re proud to have worked collaboratively to establish a ‘no risk
all reward’ agreement for the city of Santa Clara
ensuring that costs related to public safety will be considered approved expenses and covered by the Bay Area Host Committee,” Janmohamed told San José Spotlight
!function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("iframe");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";r.style.height=d}}}))}();
Most other host cities lack a similar agreement
the Georgia Legislature sent $29.25 million to the Georgia World Congress Center Authority to cover World Cup costs relating to “public safety
transportation and infrastructure expenses and implementation” at Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta
Some stadiums are in need of repairs separate from the World Cup, such as NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, where the Houston Chronicle reported the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation is spending $35 million on a new roof
including the World Cup and the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics
Victor Matheson, professor of economics at the College of the Holy Cross, questioned the justification for some expenditures. For example, Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts is privately owned by the Kraft Group, and the Boston Globe reported that World Cup Boston 2026 host committee is looking for $170 million from local governments and private investors
is skeptical they’ll get the full cost from government funding
as the state has been reluctant to use public money to fund private events
“There’s no reason that a $5 billion nonprofit company from Switzerland should be receiving a bunch of handouts from Massachusetts taxpayers,” Matheson told San José Spotlight
a Temple University professor who specializes in sports economics
said he isn’t against government spending on mega sports events so long as officials are honest about the real benefits
hosting brings thousands of people from around the world for entertainment and fun — not a large economic boost
“A dollar spent on one thing is a dollar not spent on another,” Knecht told San José Spotlight
“If you’re going to spend a dollar on the stadium
that’s a dollar not spent on police or schools.”

The San Jose Sharks prospect did not have a Game One to remember for the Barracuda

FFS quit with the sign and trade back stuff
I don’t mind out of the box thinking like this
although I also hate this particular idea for two reasons
it uses a significant chunk of cap space to make another team better for this season
The team we want to get better for next year is the Sharks
is that this out of the box thinking unfortunately is coming out of the butt with zero research going into the idea
If the Leafs are going to send the Sharks a 1st for what amounts to $11M of money,… Read more »
Even a cursory examination says it won’t happen
He keeps acting like Hasso wants to pay players to play for other teams which won’t happen
burns was the biggest retain they done right
Not close to 50% and not even close to the 8 years proposed
Love many of his proposals but this was concept is dumb and he keeps going back to it
How about stick to ideas that have at least a snow balls chance in hell of happening
As far as big UFAs Wilson just missed out on
Niedermeyer and Shea Weber were both players Wilson made a huge push to sign as UFAs
There have been others but those were 2 of the biggest other than Tavares
Looks like Neidermayer wanted to play with his brother and Weber signed the biggest albatross contract in league history
so I can live with missing out on those two guys
The money is going to be silly this offseason
but it’s not getting any less silly in the future
and I think today’s silly numbers are going to seem tame two years from now
which is why something silly like 7/$16M AAV for Marner is something the team can do
I would go after Marner and trade Eklund for Defensive help
That is a really tough first round match up…think maybe the next level might also be/been the roster construction since playoff/contention phase…the PLD saga
Another way to view the Sharks rebuild is to look at the teams we need to dislodge on the way to the top
The Kings are probably the first team on that list
the Avs and Stars are two teams that absolutely annihilated the Sharks this year and I thought they were two of the top 5 teams in the league (both better than Edmonton)
The Avs are now going home with nothing but questions and they have peak MacKinnon and Makar
especially if it’s like a 6-7yr x $8-10M
I’ll let the people who get paid to make those decisions figure it out
Bennett and Dahlin or Dobson would be my dream off season
Brock Boeser is exactly the type of player you don’t sign if you’re Mike Grier right now
I don’t follow him enough to have an opinion
like a 5yr by 8mil was offered but sounds like he will leave Vancouver
I do wonder if the drama there added impetus
think plays pretty heavy game and is a goal scorer
Seems a good fit for… Read more »
there’s a reason nobody came to Vancouver with a good offer at the deadline
Someone starved for scoring will give him big term and money
There are so many better options for the Sharks
which IMO is not what a team should add at the early stages of a build
Yeah he wasn’t really on my want list but the Sharks may have to sign a guy like this if they really want to improve
Hard no IMO on Boeser(too one dimensional – we already have Toffoli in this role) and hard no on Marner (not a good fit for the Sharks – we need more size – we have the skill)
We just need a top six fill in for the next two years that is defensively responsible and can put up 50 – 60 points (i.e
On the D-side we need a two top line D-men
Bottom four can be filled out by Shakir – Liljegren and Cagnoni – Desjarnais
Top line needs a stud anchor like Dobson or Dahlin
Marner is fine (highly unlikely) if you’re also trading Eklund for defensive help
Marner is likely light years better than Eklund will ever be
next season is likely a failure if Cags is an NHL regular
Getting Dickinson ramped up needs to be a major priority Also
but re-signing him just means the team is basically as good as January
I happen to think the Sharks could get it done with Marner because he wants money and the Sharks have money
I’m trying to think of what aggressive moves would take the team to the next tier and help slingshot through the mushy middle
Joseph recently listed future UFAs and assuming McDavid isn’t coming here
I think Marner would be very good for the duration of… Read more »

I’ve seen Evander Kane get his wrist cut open in a game
it was still shitty to see happen to someone
But thankfully he recovered fully after surgery and it doesn’t seem to affect his game so hopefully Eklund makes a quick recovery and gets back to hockey with no lasting ill effects as well
A buddy got his wrist slashed during a game and you could see the tendon sticking out
Good sign for Eklund that the ice wasn’t instantly covered in blood
Idk from that club they put in him it looks like he had surgery

Silicon Valley school district educators and politicians are emphasizing how federal funding cuts will hurt vulnerable students and lead to a loss of teachers
Liccardo and congressional Democrats are challenging the executive order to eliminate the U.S
Department of Education and a proposed $330 billion in cuts to key educational programs over the next 10 years
“Rosemary Elementary has a very effective program for special needs students,” Liccardo told San José Spotlight
“Pulling the rug out on this kind of opportunity for children is just criminal.”
Viramontez said the loss of federal funds would affect the district’s general budget as about 9% comes from the federal government
about 34% of the budget comes from federal dollars
aiding English language learner students and students with disabilities
Students with disabilities make up 9% of the student population and 81% are socioeconomically disadvantaged
“It’s impacting our most marginalized students the most,” Viramontez told San José Spotlight
“Our special education budget is $26 million right now
so that would have a pretty significant impact on us.”
Viramontez said the district provides a preventative
“We don’t have enough funding as it is,” she said
The idea of losing what we currently have … we can’t tolerate that
We can either invest wisely in developing the students so they have skills to be productive
contributing citizens or we can deprive that system and then … we’re going to have to pay in a big way on the back end.”
Clark said in addition to funding cuts to Head Start
Title I and school nutrition programs are threatened due to their sizable budgets
“This is a school that is heavily reliant on Title 1 funding,” Clark said
The difference that can make in a child’s life … in a family’s budget
We should be adding more funding … not taking it away.”
a kindergarten teacher at Rosemary Elementary School

instructional aides and special education staff who support children with learning disabilities and provide behavioral support and speech services
president of the California Teachers Association
said cuts to Department of Education programs affect 800,000 special education students statewide
hundreds of thousands of students who rely on free lunch programs and $2.1 billion in Title I grants
California receives about $16.3 billion in federal funding
including $1.33 billion for students with disabilities
It’s a whole ecosystem of programs,” he told San José Spotlight
Special ed students are not going to get the services they need.”
Goldberg said the threatened loss of $600 million in federal teaching training grants and other financial help for teacher candidates could cause a shortage
“It’s going to be harder and harder to fill positions if you cut these programs that are targeted to bring people into a profession that is already underpaid,” he said
“We’re going to continue to push on the federal government to stop creating … this constant threat of cuts that is just devastating public education
It leads to people leaving this profession.”

The San Jose Barracuda dropped Game One of their five-game series against the Colorado Eagles 6-3 on Friday night
The San Jose Sharks’ AHL affiliate dug themselves a 4-1 hole through two periods because of sloppy turnovers and penalties
Filip Bystedt did get the Cuda on the board with an electrifying short-handed strike
Bystedt! First playoff goal in San Jose in 6 years! pic.twitter.com/7CcO2wnD9d

But Bystedt couldn’t deliver after the Barracuda got close — Collin Graf and Colin White scored late goals — shanking a Grade-A opportunity in front of the net
fanned on it a little bit,” the San Jose Sharks’ 2022 first-round pick admitted
stamping out the San Jose comeback with back-to-back empty netters
The Barracuda look to even up the series at Tech CU Arena on Sunday at 6 PM PT
The rest of the series will be in Colorado: The Pacific Division’s No
1 seed will host the last three games of the series
getting pucks out and getting pucks in is huge,” Patrick Giles said
“Or a team like this will capitalize on them.”
Calle Rosen opened the scoring in the first period off an Ethan Cardwell area pass into the middle of the ice that Wyatt Aamodt stepped in front of
penalty killers Cardwell and White jumped out on what appeared to be a 2-on-2 attack
the San Jose Sharks prospect made an ill-advised cross-ice pass to White that a backchecking Jack Ahcan intercepted with ease
a now-disorganized PK couldn’t pick up Jacob MacDonald’s shot from the high slot
which Chris Wagner tipped home to make it 2-0
these weren’t the only examples of the Barracuda not valuing the puck tonight
There were too many three-quarter ice pucks that they were able to transition fast [on the counterattack]
That’s the strength of their team,” head coach John McCarthy said
“Have a little more composure with the puck
Take better care of it through the neutral zone.”
This was a veteran Eagles side taking advantage of the more immature Barracuda
they’ve had a full year [of experience],” McCarthy said
A playoff game in San Jose was a long time coming

noting that the game was mostly evenly-played
A difference-maker was an anemic Cuda power play
San Jose led the AHL with a 24.0 Power Play % in the regular season
While they’re still missing AHL MVP Andrew Poturalski
the returns of Danil Gushchin and Lucas Carlsson should’ve provided more of a spark
with 1:21 of power play time to start the third period
McCarthy opted to go with his second power play unit
and not his top group that features Cagnoni
“We got to connect on more plays,” the Barracuda bench boss said
I didn’t think the execution was as sharp as it could be.”

Barracuda Head Coach John McCarthy didn’t sugarcoat his thoughts after Friday’s 6–3 game one loss to the Eagles. Speaking postgame, McCarthy emphasized urgency, discipline, and belief in his group.
“It’s May, it’s playoffs. We can’t be having these breakdowns now,” McCarthy said.
Despite a strong start in terms of puck possession, the Barracuda struggled with execution and gave the Eagles too many high-quality chances.
McCarthy made it clear that the team didn’t come into the game just hoping to compete, it expected to win.
“We’re coming here expecting to win the game. We know what we can do in that locker room, and we gotta come out and show it on Sunday,” he stated.
A recurring theme in McCarthy’s message was the importance of building momentum one shift at a time, especially when trailing.
“When we go down four-one, you’re not going to score three goals in one shift,” he explained. “It’s got to be more. You go out, you win your shift. Next line over the wall, they win their shift. And you build momentum that way.”
Discipline, or the lack thereof, was another area of focus. With the team taking untimely penalties and giving up two power-play goals, McCarthy didn’t hesitate.
“Stay out of the penalty box. Take better care of the puck, line changes,” he said, underlining the small details that can swing tight games.
McCarthy’s tone reflected the stakes of playoff hockey.
Something that seemed heading into another tie turned into exciting victory
a 17-year-old defender who logged her first pro goal with an header in stoppage time
San Diego Wave defeated Bay FC 2-1 at Snapdragon Stadium in a game literally determined in the last play
María Sánchez hit a clinical corner onto Kennedy Wesley's head
and from the beginning it was clear what San Diego had come to do: attack
and finished low into the bottom right corner with no chance for keeper Kailen Sheridan
It was the second goal of the season for Lema and the first assist for Kundananji
her second direct goal involvement in two games
Wave responded immediately. Perle Morroni hit the post with a strong shot at 20 minutes after a loose ball on the box edge. Six minutes later, the home team could go ahead once more after a penalty was awarded inside the area. Sánchez stepped up, but Jordan Silkowitz made the save. It was her first NWSL penalty save
and she becomes the dozen goalkeepers in league history to save their first penalty against them
A score there would have totally changed the character of the game
Bay FC threatened again with a ball crossed by Alyssa Malonson
with Wave having a slight attacking ascendancy
though the other team's defense held up
San Diego had possession at 60% throughout the entire match but was unable to turn this domination into tangible scoring chances
Only two shots on target were available for the second half
The visiting side also seemed content to be held by the draw since Wave's invasion was stemmed by it and counter-attack attempts were attempted through Kundananji and Lema
Wave was trying to make space through switches and combinations on the other side
Delphine Cascarino hit the right post and nearly had the winner
San Diego was saved by the woodwork for the second time
the match's final ball came after a corner kick by Kenza Dali
headed it higher than anybody and in to seal the win
