Sridhar Kollareddy walks between thousands of imported marbled granite slabs
slated to become countertops or gravestones
has sold the slabs across the Bay Area for 20 years from his San Jose facility
he’s being forced to vacate the property in less than 72 hours to make way for a yearslong transit project
The Santa Clara County Superior Court issued a court order Monday stating Kollareddy must vacate the site at 125 N
The order also ruled inventory left after Wednesday will be deemed “abandoned,” meaning Kollareddy isn’t entitled to compensation for potentially millions of dollars of inventory he can’t move in time
an expansion decades in the making with ballooning budget costs
Kollareddy’s business is caught in the crosshairs
located where the 28th Street and Little Portugal station is planned
He supports the project and was ready to leave after settling for moving costs and other expenses
He said VTA went back and forth for years on the settlement
and in early April offered to cover moving costs if he was out in three weeks
Kollareddy said he was hit with the court order
after he requested at least 90 working days to move his inventory
Kollareddy said he’s been looking for a new site since last year
but has been unable to find one he can afford
“They want to just throw me out on the street,” Kollareddy told San José Spotlight
A VTA spokesperson disputed Kollareddy’s claims
saying the public transit agency informed businesses they may have to move in 2020
and Silicon Valley Granite agreed to move out by March 2024
The spokesperson said VTA extended the moving deadline to this April 30 and Silicon Valley Granite agreed to that date
They added VTA does not discuss settlement negotiations
“The business owner was given two separate deadlines
and chose not to leave the property or file for relocation reimbursement,” the spokesperson told San José Spotlight
The order states the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office will evict Kollareddy if he doesn’t comply
said the office hasn’t received notice of a court-ordered eviction yet
but will have to comply with it if it does
“We remain committed to handling all enforcement actions with professionalism and respect,” he told San José Spotlight
VTA’s eminent domain legal action, which began in 2021, is displacing numerous downtown San Jose businesses to make way for ventilation systems and an emergency exit from the BART tunnels
“I never thought this was going to happen in this country.”

Aku’s BBQ brings a new level of high-end izakaya standards
What really makes his skewers excellent is that
they are juicy and tender on the inside instead of drying out
He adds his own flare through his toppings and marinades
is made with Sichuan tare and balanced with a bright
“Yakitori is something I’ve made all my life,” says Ku
“My family loved to do backyard barbecues.”
There’s also a rotating izakaya menu with options like prawn toast and onigiri
the menu features Japanese beef curry bowls and Taiwanese lu rou fan
Warm months feature salads and fermentations
He also tailors the menu around events — for example
a pop-up at a hot and loud nightclub was matched with a bold
spicy dish of smoked pork belly with pickled plums and grilled
pickled Jimmy Nardello peppers along with a frisée salad for a cooling contrast
“The menu is a little bit seasonal and also depends on the mood that I’m in,” says Ku
a seared ball of sushi rice topped with tamago furikake and ikura (salmon roe)
It’s a chewy umami bomb with a slight crunch on the outside from the scorched rice
a slice of shokupan stacked with tiger prawns
and showcases a fun dynamic between the opposing textures of the crunchy toast and the creamy topping
Ku’s decision to start Aku’s BBQ is tied to his fond memories of making yakitori as a child — he recalls these meals as one of the few opportunities he had to slow down and enjoy a meal with the people he loved
He learned to make yakitori by watching Japanese cooking shows with his mom
He also found inspiration on his yearly visits to Taiwan where he fell in love with the night markets and the smoky meats grilled over charcoal
He still sees yakitori as a way to connect with others
He sets the vibe by putting on a cooking show of his own with puffs of smoke and dancing flames
Although Ku has been making yakitori for years
Aku’s BBQ is very much just getting started
He’s looking forward to embarking on this new journey and introducing his style of yakitori to people across the Bay
“I don’t have plans on being tied to a brick and mortar any time soon,” says Ku
but a little more sustainably on my health and the business — it’s a little bit of a pirate ship.”

San Jose’s premier hockey arenas are receiving security upgrades to improve fan safety as attendance steadily increases
as well as key card access and detection systems
Of the $1 million being allocated from the general fund
$515,000 will go toward Sharks Ice and the remaining $485,000 will benefit SAP Center
Improvements are set to benefit the 2025-26 hockey season
said security and safety are at the top of the list when he meets with the arena authority board of directors
“The Sharks do an excellent job right now of keeping people secure,” Morrisey told San José Spotlight
To see that they’ve decided to make this kind of investment to upgrade what they already have is forward thinking
You always have to think about safety.”
The city also ramped up a vendor cart-impoundment pilot program outside SAP Center earlier this year to address unpermitted vendors
A San Jose Sharks spokesperson declined a request to comment on the planned security upgrades
With both the SAP Center and Sharks Ice at San Jose being in prominent areas of the city
Morrisey said the improvements are important not only for fans to feel safe — but also to keep danger far away
As executive director of the arena authority for more than 25 years
Morrisey said he grew up in an era where a stadium was surrounded by a sea of parking away from the street
who represents where SAP Center is located
“This action reflects the city’s continued collaboration with the San Jose Sharks to prioritize a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors to SAP Center and Sharks Ice,” he told San José Spotlight
“Strengthening security measures is a shared responsibility
reinforcing our mutual commitment to public safety and a positive fan and customer experience.”

It didn't take long for former Washington Huskies reserve cornerback Caleb Presley to find a new home in the transfer portal

Politically-active landlords are coordinating a campaign to stop a proposal from California lawmakers to slash yearly rent control caps — and it appears to have worked
Kalra’s bill would permanently lower the existing rent control and cost-of-living rate in California from a 15% maximum increase per year
“I am grateful my colleagues on the Assembly Housing Committee acknowledged the pressing need to take action to support tenants statewide and stabilize the rental market,” Kalra said in a statement
the robust debate coupled with subsequent discussions with Judiciary Committee members signaled more time is needed to work on the bill.”
Kalra said AB 1157 will become a two-year bill — meaning it can be continued to be discussed and considered into next year
The California Apartment Association has been at the forefront of opposition to AB 1157
including groups such as the California Chamber of Commerce and California Mortgage Bankers Association
according to an April 1 letter shared with San José Spotlight by Mike Nemeth
spokesperson for the California Apartment Association
“During (Thursday’s) committee debate
assembly members acknowledged the severe housing affordability crisis but remained divided on whether AB 1157 provided an appropriate solution,” he said
“The discussion centered on balancing immediate tenant stability against concerns that stricter rent caps could hinder housing production.”
Kalra said landlord interest groups like the California Apartment Association are trying to create the perception of widespread opposition to the bill in an effort to stir up division
“If you look at the list of those opposed to my bill
they’re all apartment or realtors associations
but we have the support of renters and over 150 organizations statewide,” Kalra told San José Spotlight before he withdrew the bill
“(Thursday’s action) is a reflection that my legislative colleagues understand more needs to be done to protect California renters.”
who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation
said their respective organizations have been hesitant to take a position on the Affordable Rent Act because they suspected the bill would be withdrawn early in the legislative process — as it was Tuesday
Many landlords in San Jose who rent to low-income tenants don’t even raise rents high enough to be affected by the Affordable Rent Act
since these renters are on a fixed incomes
said their group of statewide advocacy organizations support Kalra’s bill
She said opponents of the bill are recycling the same talking points from the Tenant Protection Act discussions during COVID-19
Chen Huang said mobilizing support early and fast is key
“The state has only put 0.5% of its budget toward housing and homelessness … yet (Speaker of the Assembly) Robert Rivas said housing is the biggest human rights issue of our time,” she told San José Spotlight
“It’s amazing that a lot of our elected (officials) are not necessarily working to make that a reality in our state
especially when we are considered a progressive democratic state.”
As the San Francisco Standard recently reported the California Apartment Association hired gig workers to speak in opposition to rent control measures
Chen Huang said detractors of the bill are using heavy-handed tactics to get their messages across
Kalra said even at Thursday’s Housing and Community Development Committee hearing
some people looked like they didn’t exactly know what they were doing there
real estate is among the richest industries in California
and we have to impress upon state legislators how hard it is to pay the rent,” she told San José Spotlight
particularly over the course of the pandemic
inflation was bonkers and every year rent was going up 10% consistently
No one’s wages are going up that fast.”

The reason housing is not affordable is bad policy
https://www.brookings.edu/articles/what-does-economic-evidence-tell-us-about-the-effects-of-rent-control/
The Legislature may be slowly realizing that
having distorted and badly damaged the housing and energy markets over the last 30 years
it may be time to stop digging deeper into the holes it’s created for 40 million Californians
Newsom is alarmed about the Valero refinery closure proposed here in the Bay Area
he’s worried about his presidential prospects
or at least the kind one finds in some California jurisdictions
an unconstitutional taking under the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments
The right way to keep people of modest means in residences they’ve rented for decades is for society to bear the burden rather than a small cohort of property owners
some of whom themselves may not be that well-off

FFS quit with the sign and trade back stuff
I don’t mind out of the box thinking like this
although I also hate this particular idea for two reasons
it uses a significant chunk of cap space to make another team better for this season
The team we want to get better for next year is the Sharks
is that this out of the box thinking unfortunately is coming out of the butt with zero research going into the idea
If the Leafs are going to send the Sharks a 1st for what amounts to $11M of money,… Read more »
Even a cursory examination says it won’t happen
He keeps acting like Hasso wants to pay players to play for other teams which won’t happen
burns was the biggest retain they done right
Not close to 50% and not even close to the 8 years proposed
Love many of his proposals but this was concept is dumb and he keeps going back to it
How about stick to ideas that have at least a snow balls chance in hell of happening
As far as big UFAs Wilson just missed out on
Niedermeyer and Shea Weber were both players Wilson made a huge push to sign as UFAs
There have been others but those were 2 of the biggest other than Tavares
Looks like Neidermayer wanted to play with his brother and Weber signed the biggest albatross contract in league history
so I can live with missing out on those two guys
The money is going to be silly this offseason
but it’s not getting any less silly in the future
and I think today’s silly numbers are going to seem tame two years from now
which is why something silly like 7/$16M AAV for Marner is something the team can do
I would go after Marner and trade Eklund for Defensive help
That is a really tough first round match up…think maybe the next level might also be/been the roster construction since playoff/contention phase…the PLD saga
Another way to view the Sharks rebuild is to look at the teams we need to dislodge on the way to the top
The Kings are probably the first team on that list
the Avs and Stars are two teams that absolutely annihilated the Sharks this year and I thought they were two of the top 5 teams in the league (both better than Edmonton)
The Avs are now going home with nothing but questions and they have peak MacKinnon and Makar
especially if it’s like a 6-7yr x $8-10M
I’ll let the people who get paid to make those decisions figure it out
Bennett and Dahlin or Dobson would be my dream off season
Brock Boeser is exactly the type of player you don’t sign if you’re Mike Grier right now
I don’t follow him enough to have an opinion
like a 5yr by 8mil was offered but sounds like he will leave Vancouver
I do wonder if the drama there added impetus
think plays pretty heavy game and is a goal scorer
Seems a good fit for… Read more »
there’s a reason nobody came to Vancouver with a good offer at the deadline
Someone starved for scoring will give him big term and money
There are so many better options for the Sharks
which IMO is not what a team should add at the early stages of a build
Yeah he wasn’t really on my want list but the Sharks may have to sign a guy like this if they really want to improve
Hard no IMO on Boeser(too one dimensional – we already have Toffoli in this role) and hard no on Marner (not a good fit for the Sharks – we need more size – we have the skill)
We just need a top six fill in for the next two years that is defensively responsible and can put up 50 – 60 points (i.e
On the D-side we need a two top line D-men
Bottom four can be filled out by Shakir – Liljegren and Cagnoni – Desjarnais
Top line needs a stud anchor like Dobson or Dahlin
Marner is fine (highly unlikely) if you’re also trading Eklund for defensive help
Marner is likely light years better than Eklund will ever be
next season is likely a failure if Cags is an NHL regular
Getting Dickinson ramped up needs to be a major priority Also
but re-signing him just means the team is basically as good as January
I happen to think the Sharks could get it done with Marner because he wants money and the Sharks have money
I’m trying to think of what aggressive moves would take the team to the next tier and help slingshot through the mushy middle
Joseph recently listed future UFAs and assuming McDavid isn’t coming here
I think Marner would be very good for the duration of… Read more »
I would also like to specifically push back on the “we have the skill

A couple players who didn’t get mentioned that I think will be high on Grier’s list are Trent Frederic and Dmitry Orlov
and can fill a protector role without giving up skill

“We have close to 600 small business owners that are undocumented
so they face double the impact — loss of revenue and fear for their own (immigration) situation.”
As the Rapid Response Network of Santa Clara County remobilized to look out for ICE activity
Flores said he gathered dozens of business owners who said profits have gone down almost 40%
runs his supermarket across the street from the Target associated with previous ICE activity
With legitimate reports of ICE already scaring potential customers
Ibarra said he’s frustrated by false reports keeping people from going to the Tropicana Shopping Center
“Most of our neighbors sharing supposed immigration enforcement sightings are acting in good faith
but some folks think about getting things on social media quickly before verifying.” Ibarra told San José Spotlight in Spanish
“We haven’t seen ICE officers around since the operation with Colombian nationals earlier this year
I hope people aren’t discouraged from coming to the market
because we’re all here to protect each other and this is a safe community.”
Ibarra is either checking in with his deli and bakery workers

His customers affectionately call him by his Spanish nickname “Chava.”
Once a booming business, he told San José Spotlight foot traffic hasn’t picked up since immigration enforcement landed on the local news at the start of the year
“I’m hoping folks will come back to Tropicana because we need them
not just for their business — we miss seeing our regulars in the community.”
Flores, the Mexican Consulate and Councilmembers Bien Doan and Peter Ortiz hosted a business showcase event at the Tropicana Shopping Center earlier this month that included numerous business owners in the area
Doan said his office also co-hosted and led evens in the Latino community including Negocios Unidos and Comunidad Segura
said she wants to see more business showcase events because they need a financial boost
and customers need more reasons to come out in numbers
She said city officials can help by hosting more events and considering rent assistance for East San Jose small business owners
“We’ve been treading water since COVID-19,” Renderos told San José Spotlight in Spanish

A few weeks ago some neighbors of mine seem to have stopped sending their kids to the nearby public school
I suspect it’s because they’re worried about ICE questioning them (the parents) on their walk there or back
I doubt that they’re being home-schooled or that there are a lot of books in their house
I don’t want to raise the subject with them

and one matchup is more glaring than the rest
The Spartans are very happy with their conference schedule
and getting to play rivals Fresno State at home
It seems like the Spartans truly have a shot at the Mountain West
But one non-conference game sticks out more than the rest: the road trip to Texas in Week Two
The Longhorns are coming off a College Football Playoff Semifinal appearance
where they fell to the future national champions Ohio State
the Longhorns took down ranked Vanderbilt and Michigan
as well as rivals Oklahoma and Texas A&M
and a very successful third season under head coach Steve Sarkisian
The Longhorns are losing their starting quarterback
most notably incumbent starting quarterback Arch Manning
who has been waiting his turn to be the star of college football
but have notably lost star receiver Nick Nash to the NFL
bringing back quarterback Walker Eget and running back Floyd Chalk IV are huge for San Jose State
San Jose State opens the season against Central Michigan at home
a MAC team who finished 4-8 the season prior
the defending national champion who knocked them out of the playoff
The Spartans should theoretically build momentum after an expected easy win over Central Michigan
will be coming out of what the college football public hopes will be a slugfest
the Horns will be heavy favorites going into the matchup
and Manning is having a poor start to his career
the great Spartan defense could give the Longhorns a ballgame
San Jose State has expectations of competing for a Mountain West title
and will be fighting with all of their might to give themselves a chance against the top dogs
before proving themselves against other Mountain West opponents

A Silicon Valley politician wants to create California State University’s first public law school and is eyeing San Jose
State Sen. Dave Cortese’s Senate Bill 550 proposes establishing a law school at San Jose State University by integrating it with state-accredited
it would be San Jose’s first public law school
The CSU board of trustees would also need to approve the plan
The bill has passed the Senate Education Committee and is headed to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday
Cortese said creating the public law school would lower barriers to entry
as cost and location can turn people away from entering careers in public service — including first generation students and other underrepresented demographics
The expense and lack of public law schools make law careers out of reach
Asians and Latinos are underrepresented among licensed attorneys statewide
As the average law school debt exceeds $130,000
creating an affordable law school would help diversify Silicon Valley’s legal pipeline
“We had all sides saying they’re willing to come to the table and try to negotiate a deal,” Cortese told San José Spotlight
“You need a bill to do something like this
“The more we can help contribute to legal representation
legal services and legal opportunities being available to more folks in this community … the better,” Amezcua told San José Spotlight
“It’s critical because the traditional law school path is expensive
What we see is people that would not even consider attending a law school … that’s one of the barriers it breaks down.”
San Jose State University representatives declined to comment
Cortese said the bill has a good chance of going to the governor’s desk
as the Senate Judiciary Committee is poised to approve it with some technical changes
But SB 550 is not without funding concerns, as Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing cutting $375 million from the CSU system
Cortese said tuition and fundraising could help support a new law school — and the financial situation could change in the years it may take to close the deal
“It didn’t scare away the chancellor and the president yet,” Cortese said
“Let’s see if there’s a marriage here first
Then we can figure out how to handle the cost of the administration.”
president of the San Jose State University Pre-Law Society
said the university gaining an affordable and accessible law school would encourage more people of color to pursue a law degree
“SJSU having a law school … will inspire people and tell them their dream can be achieved,” Herrlin told San José Spotlight.” It’s not unrealistic to think that you can attain a quality and affordable legal education.”
Contact Lorraine Gabbert at [email protected]
I wish instead of trying to create a law program at SJSU that the state focused on establishing a school for Physician assistants or a school that would give us more doctors
registered nurses or doctors in the mental health field
My niece is a Physician Assistant and the universities dropped the program years ago so she had to go to a private program that was really expensive
Just something to think about since we need more people in the medical field than lawyers

Tempers flared at a recent community meeting when Latino residents in San Jose’s northside neighborhood advocated for design approval of a Chicano-themed mural
Critics of the proposed mural at Backesto Park, including the members of the 13th Street Neighborhood Advisory Committee
turned out Wednesday evening for a meeting arranged by City Hall officials
hosted by District 3 Councilmember Carl Salas
The committee criticized the proposed mural
saying they already had art planned for the wall at the park’s handball court before the pandemic
even though they had yet to come up with a design
Project coordinator Ramon Castillo said support from residents, cultural advocates and, most importantly, the San Jose arts community, proved there’s a huge demand for public art representing Northside and its Chicano community
Castillo said he discussed the mural proposal with city officials starting last year and followed the process expecting the mural design to be approved at the Arts Commission April 1 meeting
It was then met with unexpected opposition at the meeting
“People against the mural said nothing but negative things about it on social media
Things have been heating up over this potential project,” Castillo told San José Spotlight
“I was inspired to do this mural to commemorate the Mexican American culture
something to give back to my community and to my people.”
Weeks-long arguments on social media over the mural spilled into Wednesday’s community meeting when neighborhood critics dismissed the mural for numerous reasons — including lack of communication about the project
disagreement over the mural’s theme and not wanting the mural at all
Shouting matches ensued after a neighbor criticized the mural’s design being exclusively Chicano themed when the neighborhood’s history includes Italian and Asian cultures
a 13th Street Neighborhood Advisory Committee representative
said they would like to see city officials pump the brakes on the mural proposal to allow the committee more time for creative input on any future project
He said city officials should have contacted the advisory committee as soon as they found out about the mural
“We don’t want to just be a checkbox that can be ignored once the meeting has been held
and that’s how it feels,” he told San José Spotlight
“We understand the artists and organizations have put in a lot of work
it makes it seem like they’re trying to get this done before we can even exercise our opinion.”
Alfonso Salazar and John Garcia designed the art concept for the mural to be preserved on a handball court wall
San Jose public art director Michael Ogilvie recommended the Arts Commission approve the mural’s concept and design at the April 21 meeting
“The mural will incorporate elements of local indigenous culture
the Chicano movement and community life,” Ogilvie said
Salazar said the mural is meant to highlight the Chicano culture that’s grown in the neighborhood over recent years. San Jose’s lowrider community was among the largest group of supporters for the mural
Salazar said it was important to express the culture’s history on community members who weren’t around during the early years of San Jose’s Chicano boom
“I really want to make sure that this mural talks about ourselves
our present and our future,” he told San José Spotlight
“This is one good place that they can learn in their own neighborhood.”

so shouldn’t the discussion really center on what corner the city is planning to place the homeless encampment
Perhaps pull out the tennis courts and place the encampment there
Make your legacy the legacy of San Jose’s homeless encampments at parks
Kind of like the permanent stain Sam left on the city parks
reminding us of the ridiculous covid lockdowns he so embraced by painting line-up footprints on the sidewalks where kids were supposed to wait before using the swings
It is very clear that the opposition has zero clue about who Sopia Mendoza was
She is the reason the Roosevelt Junior High WALKED OUT
THATS CORRECT – ROOSEVELT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL HAD A STUDENT WALK OUT
THE STUDENTS WERE FED UP WITH BEING PUNISHED BY A STAFF THAT WAS NOT CONDUCIVE WITH OUR COMMUNITY
IT SHOES THAT QUITE POSSIBLY THAT THERE ARE THOSE NEW COMING RESIDENTS WANT TO KEEP OUR MINORITY COMMUNITY AND THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN A SHOEBOX UNDER OUR BED
I believe Michael Oglivie has a pretty good handle on the Artist and Community-Minded issues regarding the Mural
He did a great job for our Plata Arroyo Park Mural
The Key is for the whole Community to stay involved
We see what happens at the HIGHEST LEVELS POSSIBLE OF GOVERNMENT
THAT NEGATIVE APPROACH IS GOING TO CRUMBLE THE COMMUNITY INTO TO SIDES
Maybe write to the President and ask for an executive order on it
Things have been heating up over this potential project,” Castillo told San José Spotlight
many voices were left out of the design process
Backesto Park and its environs has a rich history that deserves to be told
I wonder what the design would have looked like if more community had been included
kudos to Craig Chivatero who thoughtfully and respectfully articulated many community voices for this article
This has unfortunately become a divisive situation with many feeling uncomfortable to even share their opinions
It doesn’t seem like a good beginning for permanent ‘community’ artwork
there is a history in the area of the Amusement Park days that included the Bakesto Park lands
Nobody cared enough to complain until the MEXICANS CAME UP WITH AN IDEA

San Jose’s Vietnamese Catholic Lunar New Year festival appeared to be all smiles this year
But a recently-obtained report alleges verbal abuse
safety concerns and political weight-throwing caused misery behind the scenes
The report — submitted by History San Jose to multiple City Hall officials in February — was kept hush for months until San José Spotlight obtained it through a Public Records Act request
History San Jose is the nonprofit organization stewarding the historic homes
which hosted the festival in February and sits within the 14-acre Kelley Park
The 36-page document raises questions about the festival’s future on the property
It alleges festival organizers repeatedly shrugged off major safety and traffic concerns
berated History San Jose employees for raising them and “severely” damaged the sensitive park grounds with unauthorized firecrackers despite multiple requests to stop
When confronted by History San Jose employees
festival organizers — including a prominent Catholic clergyman — claimed Mayor Matt Mahan told them it was okay to set off firecrackers
Mahan’s spokesperson Tasha Dean denied this happened
“Neither the mayor nor anyone else in our office sanctioned an unpermitted fireworks or firecrackers display,” Dean told San José Spotlight
“San Jose is one of the most diverse cities in the nation and that diversity deserves to be celebrated at our shared public spaces — safely
Regardless of whether the festival relocates
we should expect all events to abide by the rules in place to protect the community.”
District 7 Councilmember Bien Doan and Congressmembers Sam Liccardo and Zoe Lofgren
(History San Jose) staff stopped trying to stop firecrackers when guests became more emboldened from the night
a festival organizer and retired deacon with the Diocese of San Jose
where he still assists with Mass every week
allegedly claimed to have Mahan’s approval for the firecrackers
The report also said Ho “verbally berated” a History San Jose employee who shut off unsupervised inflatables for safety reasons
The yelling was so bad the employee didn’t come to work the next day
and called her a racist,” the report said
“Following a series of abuses by organizing staff
HSJ Leadership sent (the staff member) home for her own protection.”
The report lists more incidents that allegedly put History San Jose employees through the wringer
including being screamed at by vendors and almost getting run over by trucks
“We understand that History San Jose may be feeling hesitant about continuing to host the Tet festival
especially after how successful and peaceful the last two years have been,” Cao told San José Spotlight
respected the venue and cleaned up thoroughly after every event
But if there’s a loss of trust or openness
then we may have to explore other venues that truly welcome and support the spirit of the Tet Festival.”
Cao said History San Jose and the Catholic festival organizers came to an understanding after city officials received the report
calling him a respected leader in the Vietnamese community
“He’s devoted decades to humanitarian and religious service
and I can confidently say he treats everyone with professionalism and kindness,” Cao said
“If there were any misunderstandings
I’m sure they weren’t intended as disrespectful.”
It’s another instance of History Park being caught in a political crossfire
“Tet festivals have been a tradition here for over 20 years
but these past two years at History Park have taken it to a new level,” Cao said

The Portland Timbers look to continue their excellent road form on Saturday when they visit a San Jose Earthquakes side that feels it has been playing better than the results have shown
18 points) have already won three times on the road
one reason they’ve been able to generate a seven-match unbeaten run
Antony racked up three assists to three different goal-scorers in a 4-2 victory at the Los Angeles Galaxy last Sunday
All three away wins have featured at least three Timbers goals
And coach Phil Neville believes that the success is becoming a mental edge
“The away performances and the away games in this league are so difficult,” Neville said
“But it feels like we actually raise our game a little bit more away from home than we do at home
We play with a little bit more freedom away from home than we do at home
So they’re enjoying that challenge.”
and Felipe Mora and Kevin Kelsy have also scored four times
Portland has 20 goals – tied with San Jose and Vancouver for the league lead – and 17 have come in its last six matches
including a 2-1 defeat at the Columbus Crew on Saturday
Josef Martinez scored his sixth goal to pull even for the team lead with Cristian Arango
But the defensive issues from a year ago — when the Quakes set an MLS record for most goals conceded — have returned
Bruce Arena’s squad has allowed 15 goals in its last six matches
even though they’ve had some encouraging performances in that stretch
That includes narrow defeats to Columbus and LAFC
two teams that have played multiple Cup finals in the last couple seasons
“It was just frustrating not to get a result there,” San Jose defender Dave Romney said of the trip to Columbus
“I think we’ve played well in a lot of games where we haven’t gotten points
and it’s just a matter of us being better defensively in our own 18 and kind of finishing those chances.”

Last week, the San Jose Planning Commission approved the proposal for another data center located at 1657 Alviso Way in the Alviso neighborhood of Northern San Jose
The plan originally brought by the Microsoft Corporation in 2019 was previously stalled but has now been processed alongside a 2022 request for parking exemptions
The site comprises two parcels spanning 64.59 gross acres of land
along highway 237 and immediately adjacent to the Los Estoros Energy Center
The new data center’s construction will require the removal of 79 trees
to be replaced with 273 newly planted trees
it will include demolition and relocation of an existing 1,440-square-foot Valley Water Purification Visitors Center
1657 Alviso Way Site Map and Current Conditions
The project will consist of two single-story data center buildings with ancillary office use
The data center will be broken into two buildings of 244,000 square feet and 152,000 square feet
both including approximately 13,500 square feet for office usage
the remainder allocated for the data facilities
Building plans will include 224 natural gas emergency generators to power the facilities in the event of utility failure
the buildings will have a maximum electrical load of 99 MW
Also to be constructed are a 54,000 square foot water storage tank
The new facility will provide a total of 122 parking spaces and 34 bicycle parking spaces for employee usage
The new development is one of a recent trend in data center construction for the South Bay. SF Yimby reported last week on another center proposed at 4701 N First Street
The San Jose Barracuda dropped Game One of their five-game series against the Colorado Eagles 6-3 on Friday night
The San Jose Sharks’ AHL affiliate dug themselves a 4-1 hole through two periods because of sloppy turnovers and penalties

But Bystedt couldn’t deliver after the Barracuda got close — Collin Graf and Colin White scored late goals — shanking a Grade-A opportunity in front of the net
fanned on it a little bit,” the San Jose Sharks’ 2022 first-round pick admitted
stamping out the San Jose comeback with back-to-back empty netters
The Barracuda look to even up the series at Tech CU Arena on Sunday at 6 PM PT
The rest of the series will be in Colorado: The Pacific Division’s No
1 seed will host the last three games of the series
getting pucks out and getting pucks in is huge,” Patrick Giles said
“Or a team like this will capitalize on them.”
Calle Rosen opened the scoring in the first period off an Ethan Cardwell area pass into the middle of the ice that Wyatt Aamodt stepped in front of
penalty killers Cardwell and White jumped out on what appeared to be a 2-on-2 attack
the San Jose Sharks prospect made an ill-advised cross-ice pass to White that a backchecking Jack Ahcan intercepted with ease
a now-disorganized PK couldn’t pick up Jacob MacDonald’s shot from the high slot
which Chris Wagner tipped home to make it 2-0
these weren’t the only examples of the Barracuda not valuing the puck tonight
There were too many three-quarter ice pucks that they were able to transition fast [on the counterattack]
That’s the strength of their team,” head coach John McCarthy said
“Have a little more composure with the puck
Take better care of it through the neutral zone.”
This was a veteran Eagles side taking advantage of the more immature Barracuda
they’ve had a full year [of experience],” McCarthy said

noting that the game was mostly evenly-played
A difference-maker was an anemic Cuda power play
San Jose led the AHL with a 24.0 Power Play % in the regular season
While they’re still missing AHL MVP Andrew Poturalski
the returns of Danil Gushchin and Lucas Carlsson should’ve provided more of a spark
with 1:21 of power play time to start the third period
McCarthy opted to go with his second power play unit
and not his top group that features Cagnoni

Two candidates are headed to a June runoff election to decide who will represent downtown District 3 on the San Jose City Council — and Mayor Matt Mahan’s pick has been shut out
The outcome of the race could tip the scales of power at a time where Mahan needs council support to push a controversial arrest-the-homeless agenda that’s made national headlines
Tordillos and the mayor look to be finding common ground — especially now that Chavez-Lopez is a mutual rival
“Mayor Mahan and I don’t agree on every issue
we share a belief that data should drive policy discussions
and elected officials should be evaluated by the results they deliver on housing
homelessness and crime,” Tordillos told San José Spotlight
“This election was not a referendum on the Mayor or any given policy
I’m glad that our message of real solutions on housing
homelessness and public safety cut through the noise of hundreds of thousands of dollars in special interest spending by Big Oil and PG&E.”
Chavez-Lopez said she’s focused on building a broad coalition rooted in “real community leadership.”
“I see this race as a clear reflection of District 3’s desire for real solutions that work — not slogans or shortcuts,” Chavez-Lopez told San José Spotlight
“District 3 deserves a representative who knows the neighborhoods
understands the challenges firsthand and has a track record of delivering real results
I’m going to continue to meet voters where they are
and offer the proven leadership they’re looking for.”
Tordillos declared victory for second place over the weekend
after the one-day recount affirmed his six vote lead
A total of 9,105 ballots were cast in the special election
It’s the fourth San Jose race to trigger a recount in eight years — highlighting the unique political environment around the nation’s tech capital
which has become a microcosm for American politics in the digital age and heated issues such as homelessness and affordable housing
The outcome of the June 24 runoff could impact Mahan’s agenda to end homeless encampments and appeal to California’s moderate and more conservative political spheres
But his efforts hinge on the city council’s help to pass his policies and some question whether Quevedo’s elimination has exposed cracks in that support
Mahan said he’s not letting up on his platform and he’ll be watching the race to see whose ideas align with his
“The people have told us again and again — the status quo on homelessness is failing
Anyone who has run for office knows that and it is their duty to respond and offer concrete solutions for change,” Mahan’s spokesperson Tasha Dean told San José Spotlight
“Mayor Mahan has met with all major candidates in this race
and will continue listening to debates and forums to determine who has the best ideas for making District 3 safer and ending our era of encampments.”

NEW YORK — The NHL will hold its draft lottery next Monday with the San Jose Sharks holding the best chance of getting the top pick for the second straight season
The lottery to determine the top 16 picks in the June draft will be held at the NHL Network’s studio in New Jersey
The lottery is conducted in two phases with the first to determine the No
Teams can only move up 10 spots in the order
meaning only the bottom 11 teams have a chance at the first pick
This draft is not considered to be one of the stronger ones in recent years at the top with defenseman Matthew Schaefer and center Michael Misa of the Ontario Hockey League ranked by the league’s central scouting bureau as the top two North American skaters available
The Sharks won the lottery last year and picked Macklin Celebrini first overall
Celebrini had 25 goals and 38 assists in an impressive rookie season but San Jose still finished with the worst record in the NHL
That gives the Sharks a 25.5% chance of getting the No
either by winning the lottery or if the teams in the 12th through 16th spots win and can’t move up to No
The Blackhawks won the lottery in 2023 and picked Connor Bedard with the first pick

while Denis Bouanga scored his first league goal of 2025 to lead the Black & Gold to victory
LAFC is now 4W-L4-0D on the season for 12 points

Following a tight first half in which each team had chances to break the deadlock
LAFC was able to claw in front in the 65th minute thanks to Palencia
Bouanga’s powerful shot from the left was parried by San Jose goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr.
but the rebound fell to Palencia at the top of the box and the Spanish defender’s right-footed shot flew into the net
It was Plencia's first professional first-division goal of his career
LAFC doubled its lead in the 86th minute when Timothy Tillman intercepted a San Jose clearance and quickly played in Olivier Giroud

and he can’t afford to open a new location elsewhere to continue his passion
I never thought in my life that they (would) not renew my lease,” he told San José Spotlight
A Redtree Partners representative said the company has had a long
but can’t comment on their lease or future tenants
started Chef Li with his partner Lawrence Li in 1997 after running a restaurant in Saratoga for 10 years
He began selling the magenta orchids lining the restaurant’s tables soon after
trying to serve customers when they were 4- and 5-years-old
Most of Chef Li’s employees have been there since the beginning
She’s sad the restaurant is closing after its decadeslong run
“(It’s) like a family for all the people and the customers here,” Wang told San José Spotlight
The restaurant offers a variety of Chinese dishes
from sesame chicken fried in a light batter and coated in garlic sauce to pineapple basil fried rice with prawns and chicken
Chef Li’s delicacies have built a loyal customer base that goes out of its way to help Diec
including fundraising to replace glass after the restaurant was broken into
Customer Daniel Garcia has been going to the restaurant every Friday for six years
he’s spent four hours eating and chatting with Diec and his workers
He orders the mu shu pork marinated in plum sauce and wrapped in spring pancakes
Garcia said he doesn’t know where he’ll grab dinner Fridays after Chef Li closes
“How can the management just have that power to destroy a restaurant that the community loves?” he told San José Spotlight
“We have to leave, (that’s) the saddest thing,” Diec said. “But overall, the customers are very nice here, very loyal and they (kept) me surviving during the pandemic … From the bottom of my heart

San Jose’s newest temporary housing site will be a litmus test as to whether using private land to build shelter will be a good model for reducing homelessness
The Via Del Oro tiny home site, which can house up to 150 people and allows pets, opened Thursday. San Francisco-based nonprofit DignityMoves built the homes on land owned by philanthropist John A. Sobrato, who is leasing the property to San Jose for $1 annually for the next decade
The 135 individual rooms are each equipped with a bed and nightstand
The village will have shared bathrooms and kitchen space
Nonprofit HomeFirst will provide case management and three daily meals
Via Del Oro cost $17.2 million to build on the 2.5-acre site
It will take $2.7 million a year to operate
“This site is really our first test case of using private land and showing that these kinds of innovative partnerships can work,” Mayor Matt Mahan said at the opening
“We have to keep innovating to make sure that every public dollar goes further and has more impact
There’s a lot of underutilized private land
Sobrato has donated millions of dollars to local temporary housing projects, including $5 million for the 204-room multi-story modular housing site at Monterey Road and Branham Lane
He said if the Via Del Oro project turns out well
more land is available to expand the facility
“We can double the amount of units on the remaining land,” Sobrato said
and I’m delighted to have a part in that.”
Formerly homeless resident Zachary Plumeau
said he’s been given a second chance in life by being offered housing at Via Del Oro
Drug addiction caused him to spiral into homelessness four years ago
moving from one street to the next whenever a sweep happened
Rescuing a dog half a year ago made him realize he needed to get his life together
He’s looking at getting his electrical training card reinstated so he can start working as an electrician again
“I feel comfortable enough to attack the addiction,” Plumeau told San José Spotlight
There is a point at which we have enough beds for everyone in San Jose,” DignityMoves CEO Elizabeth Funk said

2025) – Chicago Fire FC defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 5-1 in the third match of the Coachella Valley Invitational Wednesday morning at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio
Jonathan Bamba and Brian Gutiérrez each scored their first two goals of the preseason
while Philip Zinckernagel tallied his first and added a pair of assists in the first half
Chicago got on the board quickly from the penalty spot
After a fourth minute give-and-go from Gutiérrez
Bamba was tackled in the box as he threatened to get behind the San Jose defense
the Ivorian winger tucked a well-placed shot near the right post to put the Fire in the lead
Despite some pressure from the Earthquakes
the Fire doubled the lead just eight minutes later
After receiving the ball off a turnover in the San Jose box
who laid it up for Gutiérrez to blast into the San Jose goal
The Men in Red would not ease off the accelerator
and added another goal just three minutes later when Zinckernagel found an open Bamba on a counter down the left wing
The winger dribbled past midfield and into the final third
where he gave it right back to Zinckernagel in an open position on the right flank
He rounded the goalkeeper and scored on an empty goal to tally his first with the Fire
Zinckernagel made San Jose pay with a counter down the right side
where he found himself on the end of a through ball from Gutiérrez
handing the ball to Gutiérrez to earn his own brace with a penalty kick conversion in the 27th minute
Zinckernagel got his second assist of the match in impressive manner
the winger spotted Bamba streaking unmarked into the box
He curled a perfect pass into his path to give the Ivorian a brace of his own and cap the scoring in the first half
Both teams made wholesale changes from the onset of the second half
but the Quakes kept their front three intact to get one back
San Jose won the ball back off an errant throw-in
working the ball to MLS All-Star Chicho Arango
The Colombian forward then rifled a shot into the upper corner of the goal to round out the scoring for the day

Two major housing developments in San Jose are the first to be approved as part of Mayor Matt Mahan’s latest initiative to expedite projects that provide “extraordinary benefits” to the city
“We don’t want our zoning and current land use designations to get in the way of innovation that might pencil today
We understand how hard it is to attract investment into our downtown,” Mahan said at the meeting
“We have approved a lot of housing that has sat on the shelf and hasn’t gotten built because it doesn’t get financing.”
City leaders launched initiatives like the Innovative Project Pathway Program after the housing department revealed it saw zero multifamily housing projects start construction last year
The construction of a 99-megawatt data center would provide an estimated $3.5 million to $6.4 million annually in new property and utility-user taxes, city officials discovered
But Mahan and Foley noted data centers aren’t necessarily compatible with downtown and the city’s goal of beautifying the area and making it more dynamic
“Data centers are low employment uses that don’t generate foot traffic or create vibrancy
that’s what we want,” Foley said at the meeting
“It’s critical that we demand certain conditions in order to stay true to the spirit of the general plan — the reason we’re considering data centers in downtown is because (this project) accompanies high-density housing.”
The 18-story apartment complex with 345 homes is planned at 323 Terraine St
with an 11-story data center and a 10-story parking garage with 621 parking spaces incorporated into the design
The three high-rise towers will be 30-stories tall each
five levels of underground parking and more than 18,000 square feet of ground floor retail space
said data centers are going to be at the forefront of the artificial intelligence economy and San Jose has an opportunity to capitalize on the trend
“We all know the struggles here in the Bay Area and of tech companies actually having enough housing
which is driving people out of our communities,” he said at the meeting
“We think the data centers and the housing are very complimentary … We’ll capture the waste heat from the data center and feed that into the housing project next door.”
Councilmember Peter Ortiz asked Jacobson the number of affordable homes expected for both projects. The Westbank representative said they are still working with city officials to satisfy the affordable homes requirement
Mahan said the residential buildings will be constructed first, recognizing that data centers are easier to finance amid the AI economy
Because data centers won’t bring foot traffic to downtown
city officials will explore tying a percentage of the data center’s future revenue to arts
we do ask in our multi-signature memo that the builder ensure the ground floor of the data center is creatively activated above and beyond a public art installment,” Mahan said
“(We’re) inviting the applicant to be really creative in how we activate that space.”
City Planning Director Chris Burton said both projects will likely come back to the city council for final approval after plans are finalized with Westbank
He doesn’t want the city to make policy changes that would impact downtown more broadly
“We’ve been working hard to entice new residential development
especially high rise residential development throughout our downtown,” Burton said at the meeting
“The idea here was to … give council the opportunity to give us early feedback on individual projects that we could then craft a process that would follow on the back end.”

San Jose is breaking ground on its first sanctioned homeless encampment
which will allow 56 people to sleep in tents without fear of being swept this summer
“We need a spectrum of solutions,” Mayor Matt Mahan said Monday
And you really have to think of these solutions on a continuum
and what we’ve done for far too long
is embrace a status quo approach that has left thousands of people with no options
thousands of people to live (outside) with no sanitation
The city will implement a no encampment zone near the site on both sides of Coyote Creek from Mabury Road to East Empire Street
Outreach teams have already created a list of people encamped around the vicinity who will move to the safe sleeping site once it opens
city Housing Director Erik Soliván told San José Spotlight
The site is fashioned after a similar safe sleeping site in San Diego
though Mahan said San Jose is starting smaller to ensure it can manage the site properly
Mahan said last year the safe sleeping site would open in March
but Public Works Director Matt Loesch said the plan has always been to open the site in June
“Our plan has always been this schedule,” Loesch told San José Spotlight
Residents have raised concerns about the site’s proximity to Empire Gardens Elementary School and Watson Park
Homeless people set up camp along nearby Coyote Creek
and the city in recent weeks began sweeping the area and setting up no encampment zones
Neighbors are worried about increased crime and drug dealing in their neighborhood due to the safe sleeping site
The city will track data on the number of 911 and 311 calls
how active residents are with case management
as well as whether the city is meeting its goal of moving people out within 30 days
The city will also conduct background checks on participants to ensure sex offenders won’t live at the site
city officials previously told residents at a community meeting last year
Resident Jefferey Hare said he’s happy to see the city taking this step to restore the park and trails for public use
He said it’s up to residents to keep the city accountable on its promises
“The city can’t just put up the tents and lay down the water lines and do these structures here and then walk away,” Hare said at the groundbreaking
“They’re going to have to keep on this thing and make sure that it works.”
a 69-year-old homeless man hanging out at nearby Watson Park
thinks the safe sleeping site is a good idea
He’s staying at an overnight warming shelter
he doesn’t know where he’ll go
He said he’s been homeless on and off for the past three decades and hasn’t been offered a space at the site
“I would want it,” he told San José Spotlight

Can anyone explain why we always put our homeless encampments at the parks for our youngest children
is at Watson Park where thousands of small boys and girls play soccer and flag football year-round
We already have to deal with the smell of pot and trash fires burning in the encampments
Remember when city leaders tried to put FEMA trailers in the parking lot of Happy Hollow
Is the city intentionally working to drive families away
Am I the only one in the city who loves their children enough to know and state that this is wrong
I’m really wondering why everyone votes for the people they do
Why doesn’t the city use imminent domain on abandoned buildings and properties that already are connected to the infrastructure
I think the city is on the right track to help people who want a safe place to be and hopefully receive services to find them a permanent home
There are too many people on our streets and creeks and some are working and some are disabled and probably will never be employed
the Mayor is trying to clear our city’s street and they have control on who is eligible for these sites
Supportive housing applicants are placed by Santa Clara County and these people might not be from our city but other cities and the county decides who we get
Having said all of this my hope is that our Mayor and Council develop a policy for supportive housing like they have for these safe sites
Second Street Studios needs help and a similar policy would improve living conditions there and for our neighborhood Spartan Keyes

Registered nurses at HCA’s Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose
to highlight their patient safety concerns
and the lack of a dedicated management team in the emergency room
Nurses at Good Samaritan are represented by California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU)
“The volume of patients in our ER is extremely high
largely due to HCA cutting vital services at Regional Medical Center nearby,” said Maria Luisa Diaz
RN in the Good Samaritan emergency room since 2005
“We lack resources to handle HCA’s self-inflicted problem
which causes massive safety issues for patients
but management refuses to provide adequate staffing
even though there are nurses available and willing to work.”
and nurses are ringing alarm bells,” Luisa Diaz added
“When we are forced to provide care to patients in a waiting room
it is extremely dangerous and unfair to those seeking help
HCA can and should do better for our community.”

“My family has worked in this hospital for generations,” said Kylie Garcia
RN in the emergency department and a third-generation nurse at Good Samaritan
I've watched our hospitals deteriorate under HCA's management to a new low
But HCA just refuses to work with us to guarantee safe patient care.”
I witnessed the hospital management constantly doing things to jeopardize patient safety in order to make more profit,” Garcia added
“This culture is disheartening and deeply upsetting
and it weighs heavily on my heart and mental state to walk into ER every shift when I don’t know what to expect and what kind of dangerous situations I will be forced to deal with
which could have been avoided if HCA put patients first.”

apparently Ken Niumatalolo really can do more than coach option attacks.Good football coaches are good football coaches - they figure it out. After doing the nearly impossible and winning 192 games in 16 seasons at Navy - everyone forgets just how different the talent level is across the board at the service academies - and despite the ridiculous narrative that he might not be able to adjust
Niumatalolo wasn’t exactly the hottest coaching prospect in the mix
he took over a team that needed a total overhaul

"DeJuan Jones is a welcomed addition to our team
He is an experienced player in the league and has the versatility to play in both our backline and midfield," Arena said
"I look forward to again working with DeJuan and welcome him to the San Jose Earthquakes."
Now in his seventh MLS season, Jones has 8g/18a in 157 regular-season appearances. Last June, he was traded from New England to Columbus

A new proposal plans to transform a lot with several small retail buildings into more than 400 affordable housing units at 1099 South Bascom Avenue in San Jose
The entire project would consist solely of affordable housing
with a focus on access to local transportation
b9 Architects is responsible for the preliminary plans and renderings
The South Bascom lot is one of the Urban Village-designated zones in the San Jose 2040 Envision Plan
The San Jose Planning Department describes Urban Villages as areas growing into medium to high density
with increased walkability and access to both housing and employment
These districts are specifically focused along commercial corridors and areas of high public transportation
City of San Jose Zoning Districts with Urban Villages in Red and 1099 South Bascom Avenue Site Location Marked by Star
the new proposal will only allot 191 parking spaces for the proposed 474 residential units
although they will include 457 bike stalls as well
Because of the zoning designation and size of the development
the application has also indicated that the developer will seek a density bonus that will allow it to waive other commercial and design standards as well
The current site is occupied by a Round Table Pizza and a vacant business previously home to Kelly-Moore Paints
This project is one of several large affordable housing projects to be proposed in Santa Clara County recently
many of which are on similarly vacant or underutilized parcels
1099 South Bascom Avenue Site Location Marked in Blue as Seen South of Interstate 280 in San Jose
Someday I hope developments like this get built as point access blocks instead of these double loaded corridor blocks
The units would be better and there would be more open space while housing the same number of people
like how much more traffic is all that gonna cause ??
Didn’t hear anything about expanding any lanes EXPAND THESE LANES SAN JOSE IS CONGESTED AS IT IS !!!!!

San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) captain Logan Couture announced today that he will step away from professional hockey
Couture has been dealing with symptoms related to Osteitis Pubis
which has resulted in him missing the majority of the previous two seasons
He will remain under contract with the San Jose Sharks through the 2026-27 season
I am no longer able to play hockey,” said Couture
“I’m extremely grateful and proud to have played 16 years in the best league in the world
I want to thank the Sharks organization and all of my teammates over the course of my career
thank you to the Sharks and hockey fans around the world for your continued support
I will continue to root for the Sharks as they look to get back to annually competing for the Stanley Cup as we did for so many years.”
has authored one of the most prolific playing careers in the history of the San Jose Sharks
He ranks in the team’s top five all-time in multiple categories
short-handed goals (14; T-2nd) and power play goals (83; 4th)
Couture is one of only 59 players in NHL history to amass 900 games
and is one of three to do so with the Sharks (Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski)
Couture helped the Sharks earn nine playoff berths across ten seasons from 2009-10 through 2018-19
the franchise’s first-ever Western Conference championship and Stanley Cup appearance in 2015-16
and two division titles (2009-10 and 2010-11)
Between his first season in 2009-10 and the 2018-19 season
the Sharks won 441 regular season games and 60 Stanley Cup Playoff games – both of which are fourth-most in the NHL during that span
Couture assumed the role of Captain in the 2019-20 season
serving as the 10th full-time captain and 13th overall captain in team history
He had previously served as an alternate captain from 2015-16 through 2018-19
“From the first time he set foot on the ice with a Sharks sweater on
Logan has been the consummate professional,” said Sharks General Manager Mike Grier
“He has been a great leader on and off the ice and always led by example through his work ethic and by his play
Logan is the rare player who excelled at every facet of the game - he scored goals
was excellent on both sides of special teams
If you needed a goal late in the game or were defending a one-goal lead
Logan was the player you wanted out on the ice
What I admire most about Logan is when the games mattered the most
he always elevated his game to a whole new level
His performances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs speak for themselves
his health and quality of life with his family must be the top priority but we have been extremely fortunate to have had Logan as our captain and as a leader in our organization for the past 16 seasons.”
From the start of his first full season in 2010-11 through his last game played on Jan
Couture ranked tied for 19th in the NHL with 318 goals
He is one of only three players in team history with 10 or more 20-goal seasons and one of three to score 300 goals with the team
is one of four to tally 700 or more points with the franchise and is one of five in club history with five or more 60-point campaigns
Couture finished in the top three in scoring for San Jose in nine different seasons and each of his last three full campaigns on the ice
He recorded three hat tricks over his career and tallied a career-high five points (two goals
Logan “Clutchure” was known for his consistent playoff performances
elevating his play when the games demanded it the most
he ranks second in team history with 53 Stanley Cup Playoff assists

San Jose police continue to issue handwritten tickets to homeless people even after the department switched to electronic citations — a practice that is raising questions
Four homeless residents encamped near Cherry Avenue along the Guadalupe River said police regularly patrol the area and give out tickets for trespassing and littering
The behavior has those helping the unhoused residents wondering if the information is being logged or used as a scare tactic on an already vulnerable population
Santa Clara County Deputy Public Defender Jake Rhodes
who makes regular trips to homeless encampments
said the citations he’s seen tend to be handwritten
and he’s seen more than 20 over the past few years for violations like trespassing
“I have been wondering for a long time about this practice
I have no idea what the (police) are doing,” Rhodes told San José Spotlight
Winds are definitely changing about the homeless population in San Jose
so there’s ways that the court system can be used to arrest people.”
He showed this news organization a picture of an illegible ticket given to a homeless person that appeared to be from January of this year — with no court date information
Failure to show up to a court date could result in a bench warrant leading to an arrest. However, when cited homeless residents ask Rhodes to check their court date or if they have a warrant
Rhodes said he’s been unable to find corresponding court dates
“I don’t know if the DA is declining filing,” he said
“I don’t know if the city attorney is declining filing
I don’t know if the officers aren’t turning in a name
I don’t know what’s going on.”
nuisance and littering are handled by the city attorney’s office since the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office only prosecutes misdemeanor and felony offenses
Supervising Deputy District Attorney Brandon Cabrera said
city ordinances and citations are handled by the respective city attorney’s office,” Cabrera told San José Spotlight
my office does not currently prosecute these offenses
nor do we have any relevant data to provide.”
However, his office is in talks with the city on how to handle the new policy pushed by Mayor Matt Mahan that would arrest homeless people for trespassing if they refuse shelter after three offers
City Attorney Nora Frimann did not respond to requests for comment on how her office handles trespassing and littering citations
Officers with the San Jose Police Department are required to issue electronic citations
They acknowledged there are certain instances where paper citations may be given out
A copy is given to the individual and the original is filed away at the records unit
A final approved copy is sent to the court liaison
“Paper citations are eventually entered into the records management system
but the process is not expedient,” the spokesperson told San José Spotlight
“Paper citations are tracked in an internal management system that is not accessible to the crime analysis unit who fulfilled your initial data request inquiry.”
A records request from this news organization to SJPD asking for the number of citations around Cherry Avenue for trespassing
littering and noise from the end of last year to date came back with no results
“It is very likely the individual who you first spoke with that provided you with this info alleging they were issued a trespass citation was in fact actually issued a citation for something other than trespassing,” the spokesperson said
The spokesperson reiterated handwritten citations don’t “fall through the cracks.”
“All paper citations still get processed and sent to (a) court liaison
regardless if the original recipient loses their copy or not,” the spokesperson said
A search on the county court website for the people San José Spotlight interviewed showed no recent citations
A worker at the police records unit told San José Spotlight all paper citations are stored in the records unit
and should be entered electronically so courts are aware of the violation before the scheduled hearing — which is normally 45 days from the date of citation
If the citation is not entered electronically and the person shows up for court
the courts turn that person away and a new court date will be issued via mail
Since homeless people don’t have addresses
a bench warrant will be issued and police will see it the next time they encounter the person’s name
The records department prioritizes entering handwritten citations for homeless people
Though he no longer handles that type of work
he used to see about six to seven citations for homeless people every week
ranging from trespassing to being drunk in public
One homeless resident who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons told San José Spotlight police showed up at his tent around February and handed him a handwritten ticket for trespassing
The homeless resident said he threw the ticket away
“They can’t force money out of you if you don’t have it,” he told San José Spotlight
a homeless resident who didn’t want his last name printed for privacy reasons
said police come to Cherry Avenue regularly
He’s said he’s gotten three tickets for trespassing
When he showed up to court one time on a trespassing citation
he said his case wasn’t even on the docket
“(Police) come in and just start taking everything
they take our clothes,” he told San José Spotlight
“They just give us tickets for no reason.”

littering and drunk in public should be issued citations
The person that threw away the ticket is displaying the behavior San Jose residents are tired of
total disrespect for laws and the expectation that the laws should not apply to them
Every business near Cherry Avenue has signs warning about increased crime and many have even been forced to hired extra security so their patrons and property is not damaged
It is very sad to see the unhoused terrorize our community
“San Jose homeless people say police citations are harassment”
I say mentally ill and drug-addicted homeless people need treatment in institutions until they can care for themselves and rejoin the general population
so there’s ways that the court system can be used to arrest people.”
but many homeless are not signing up for treatment or institutionalization
the citations may not “force money out of you if you don’t have it” but will result in jail time if they don’t pay
Getting people off the streets is the priority
Make it free to all if we think it should be free
The laws apply to everyone and unhoused people that believe they are above the law should not be rewarded with free housing
Prioritize housing for the people without citations
I’ve lived here since 2000 and watched the evolution of this encampment first hand
an older 50 something year old couple that had weathered the streets for years in pursuit of their substance abuse
At one point Darren was assaulted and had cauliflower ears
Rasheeda’s family was able to talk her into treatment
I used to give Darren a few bucks now and then until one day I realized I had been giving him money since before my then 14 year old daughter was born
I know countless social workers had been out there to talk to him
I can tell she’s not going to last much longer out here
The lowlifes that have moved in are much more vicious than her or Darren ever were
Bathrooms here used to be open to the public
Stores used to keep everything out in the open
Now Walmart and Safeway lock up the most common items
These folks need to be forcefully committed to psychiatric care
They’re willing to die out there for a lifestyle choice that allows them to monopolize and trash up public space for themselves as well as be an inconvenient burden for the neighborhood
get a failure to appear and have the sheriff take them to jail
It’s the only legal way we can force them to take shelter
I thought Highest & Best Use principals were being followed in the 21st century – s/
