Los Angeles private members club San Vicente debuts next door to the Jane Hotel in the West Village If you buy something from an Eater link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics policy The ultra-exclusive San Vicente opened on Friday in the West Village at 115 Jane Street at West Street, next door to what was formerly legendary party spot of the early aughts, the Jane Hotel (at 113 Jane Street) The debut marks a New York peak members club moment San Vincente arrives by way of Los Angeles and it's where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been said to hide out This one, just like other Manhattan clubs — including Jean-Georges’s Chez Margaux; London import the Twenty Two; ZZ’s from Carbone; Tao’s Crane Club open since 2021 — keeps out the general public The Jane’s hotel customers do not have access to the club and vice versa the “directrice of global membership” and a former assistant to Anna Wintour and Tina Brown steers membership that’s decided by a committee Unlike ZZ’s which reaches $20,000 to $30,000 for their club’s initiation the initiation fees at San Vicente range from $3,000 to $15,000 while annual dues ring in between $1,800 and $4,200 Chef Nicholas Ugliarolo runs the San Vicente kitchen, which funnels food to the ground floor restaurant and the roof restaurant — though food is served throughout the building, in the drawing room, the billiards room, and the disco, too. Ugliarolo was the former culinary director of Jean-Georges management and chef de cuisine at ABC Kitchen as well as Jean-Georges in Philadelphia Klein apparently spent years picking the correct chef he supposedly tells his employees: “This is like Harvard: You need to be the best to work here.” fried zucchini chips with halloumi and tzatziki and stracciatella with bread and jam ($24) A fish of the day is a showcase of the mains — salmon Other mains include a $35 burger with Russian dressing served with fries or a salad along with nostalgic dishes like spicy rigatoni ($29) There’s also a sushi section, overseen by Kitkat, formerly of LA’s Katsuya who has worked under Jun Ichikawa and Shoji Takahashi Look for items like spicy tuna or rainbow rolls ($19 and sashimi including otoro and bluefin ($28 Running the bar program is Aaron Thorpe, former wine director at Raoul’s in Soho, and opening beverage director for Le Coucou, Veronika, and the Clocktower for Stephen Starr before the pandemic. He most recently was at Roman and Williams Guild at La Mercerie coming from NYC restaurants on boats such as Grand Banks She’d also been a VP of operations for UrbanSpace building the bar program for Urban Hawker; and had stints working for Stephen Starr It’s not certain that New Yorkers will accept San Vicente without a bit of side-eye Klein was overheard by Eater saying that everything needs to be “absolutely perfect,” in particular as “it’s not an easy town to be successful.” Klein is apparently a stickler for details: As Ford noted to the Times “You feel Jeff’s presence in every way.” In the Times piece Klein is likened to the late Joe Allen — of the namesake New York Theater District restaurant — in terms of his command of the room and how he’s helped the careers Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Barnes scores by 5 1/2 lengths in the San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita Park and he and Barnes vied for favoritism right up to the post time Barnes went off as the even-money favorite When the gate opened, multiple graded stakes-placed McKinzie Street  flew to the front He stepped through swift fractions of :22.65 for a quarter-mile and :45.10 for a half-mile racing head and head with the pacesetter for jockey Juan Hernandez Though the quick fractions would eventually tell on McKinzie Street, Barnes was just getting into gear. Angeles are betting they can turn belonging into the next hot social signifier But in a city where trends fade as quickly as they appear can these clubs sustain Manhattanites’ interest A number of new members clubs have opened in Manhattan this year many the offspring of London-based hospitality groups where members’ clubs are deeply embedded in the local culture opened Maxime’s on the Upper East Side in March Clubs with roots in LA and Miami are also flocking to the city West Hollywood entertainment mogul meeting ground San Vicente Bungalows took root in the West Village in March and Miami’s Casa Tua opened in The Surrey Hotel last October These new entrants follow on the heels of the likes of Casa Cipriani don’t carry much cachet with Millennials and Gen-Z who are schooled in signalling status by sharing experiences on social media and want clubs with an atmosphere more suited to their generation But New York City may prove hard for this new wave of members clubs to crack because “in New York paying for something isn’t cool,” said Annabel Schwartz founder of hospitality agency House of Talana who previously managed member relations for San Vicente Bungalows and Soho House and we demand way more than just a good dinner and a beautiful space with a celebrity in the corner you’re pretty much on your way to success.” locals are more nostalgic for a time when you had to earn the respect of the maître d’ to get a table at one of the city’s hot restaurants influencers and celebrities have easy access to free drinks and meals access carries more social clout than money experimented with bringing the London model overseas in the early 2000s the need for spaces beyond home and office sent the members club trend skyrocketing in New York And as hospitality professionals picked up on the membership model’s ability to keep charging throughout the pandemic while hotels and restaurants suffered more started looking to it as a reliable revenue stream Hotels like Aman NYC and Fasano Fifth Avenue opened members-only sections as did hospitality groups including Tao Group Major Food Group with ZZ’s and Jean-Georges Restaurants with Chez Margaux the new clubs are entering the city in such rapid succession that they’re attracting more attention which is helping to cement membership as a new status symbol Social media has added further momentum; having the ability to post and geotag their location online is just another way for members to signal clout There appears to be appetite for the rush of new openings — Scott Sartiano founder of five-year-old Zero Bond said that over 14,000 people have applied for membership and not gotten in and it’s not just any space that can successfully bring the model to life nor combat New Yorkers’ attraction to all things shiny and new “Yes … it’s a saturated market,” said Schwartz “But if we have incredible places that come onto the market that really deliver the experience that a membership club should be I think that there’s a huge longevity still available for them.” many clubs have fallen victim to New Yorkers’ high standards short attention spans and distaste for the hoi polloi it lost cachet as it sought to satisfy shareholders with a growing number of global franchises and by offering memberships to those outside creative fields while its original purpose was to serve those who had historically been left out of members’ clubs It became “for the masses,” according to Ariela Kiradjian co-founder and chief operating officer at the Boutique & Luxury Lodging Association getting a table at the clubs became just as challenging as any other popular restaurant eliminating the convenience members expected Charging exorbitant fees can be just as harmful as scaling too fast charged up to half a million dollars to join as an investor-member but a large part of the townhouse soon opened to the public with certain sections staying members-only When luxury content creator Julia Hackman Chafé visited the club at the peak of its popularity in 2022 hottest place and [we] worked very hard to get that reservation … and it was filled with old white guys,” she said clubs need to be thoughtful about targeting and cultivating a specific tribe with shared interests — not just those with the most money “The proliferation of clubs kind of creates a ‘choose your sports team’ mentality,” said Nadine Choe founder of hospitality newsletter and podcast The Stanza I probably divide my time between New York and Milan and have to do business with Italian people.” But in a city that’s heavily career-driven members’ rapport should go above and beyond their professions and be rooted in their ability to engage and have fun together — providing a respite from work and capturing the essence of a memorable night out in New York Schwartz elaborated that teams need to ask themselves whether groups sitting at neighbouring tables will be interested in talking to one another and consider their role in facilitating connections She highlighted one LA club that asked potential members to tell them a funny story in the interview process to get a sense of their personality Sartiano personally reviews every application the club receives and is thoughtful about how people from different walks of life will come together He thinks of it like “having a dinner party at your house and you’re trying to bring old friends with new friends and put them together and form new relationships for people,” he said Getting the crowd right can even prompt convenience-minded New Yorkers to go out of their way for a visit Hackman Chafé pointed to Casa Cipriani’s crowd as one of the reasons it manages to get members to consistently make the journey there even if its lower Manhattan location can be out of the way for many community is particularly important in a city that can feel “lonely,” said Kiradjian “Running into people you know” in the city is a clear value proposition because “from a psychological standpoint you feel important… So people will 100 percent pay a premium to find that belonging in that community,” she said Having a go-to restaurant in New York where you are known is a rare feat in a city of eight million and comes with spending considerable time in the city So in addition to understanding their broader community investing time in getting to know their individual guests and their preferences can help clubs make their members feel seen “The ownership of the club needs to have this local maître d’ mentality,” said Choe “Think about your favourite corner restaurant that you go to all the time They know how you like to drink your martini.” This type of attention to detail that makes members feel at home gives them a reason to pick a specific club over the other options available to them in an expensive city where they’re likely to be choosy Consistency in staff is one way for clubs to build relationships with their members — Zero Bond and Sartiano spends 10 to 12 hours there every day Convenience is another non-negotiable in a city notorious for difficult reservations Being greeted by a host who knows your name is important but the ability to drop by for spontaneous dinners and drinks can eliminate a lot of stress from an otherwise high-octane city Rather than being faced with an hour-long wait for a restaurant that’s at capacity “the biggest positive thing about members clubs is knowing that when they come here on a Friday night we’re going to welcome them through the doors,” said Eric Freitas Orford But to ensure a membership opportunity’s longevity teams need to ensure they can deliver the unique creative crossover and spontaneity that New Yorkers love about their city “You have to really understand the landscape because they have access to anything they want at any time they want it,” said Sartiano “So how do you build something unique and special enough that they want to pay to be a part of it long term?” fashion ARCADIA, Calif. -- Barnes defeated stablemate Romanesque by 5½ lengths to win the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert in a field of Kentucky Derby hopefuls on Saturday at Santa Anita. Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Barnes ran seven furlongs in 1:22.15 and paid $4, $2.80 and $2.10 as the slight even-money favorite. The 3-year-old colt had $307 more in the win pool than Bullard. "I knew he would run well," Baffert said. "I was watching Juan, he knows the horse well, and he said he was a little green. But everyone who has worked him says he has another gear. They are all a little green. The second (race) out is the most important for all these horses." Barnes improved to 2-0. He was purchased for $3.2 million as a 2-year-old by owner Amr Zedan. "He had to really stretch to get this horse," Baffert said. "When you have clientele like that, it is everything." Romanesque, also trained by Baffert, returned $5.20 and $2.40. Bullard was another half-length back in third and paid $2.10 to show. Making his second career start and first in a stakes race, Barnes dueled on the lead with McKinzie Street in the opening half-mile. Barnes spurted away midway through the second turn and ran strongly through the stretch to close out the win. "He's really good. I love him," said Hernandez, who was riding Barnes for the first time. "He was aggressive down the backside but he's still learning how to run. I like him because around the quarter pole, he got off the bridle and was kind of looking around a little bit. But when I corrected him, he came back to me. I was really surprised how he finished today." Baffert said Barnes reminded him of his 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Barnes is named after Baffert's longtime assistant, Jimmy Barnes. "They surprised me and I was honored," Barnes said. "I was a little nervous, but it is working out well so far. I had a little bit of a knot in my stomach, but it will only get better after this." A hybrid of ballet flat and low-profile sneaker, the Sneakerina is this season’s answer to the sleek, celeb-approved alternative to bulky soles. On the feet of tastemakers like Courtney Trop, Tashi Rodriguez, and Charlotte Lawrence, the shoe made its fashionable debut, while DJs Ladies of Leisure spun tracks into the night. Each guest styled the silhouette in their own way: Devon Ross opted for silver grained calf leather, Phoebe Dynevor kept things crisp in bright white, and the ever-coordinated Haim sisters—Este, Danielle, and Alana—stepped out in matching forest green. “We’re always telling the same story in different ways,” Danielle told Vogue, describing the sisters’ fashion chemistry. “I lean into casual, menswear vibes. You’ll probably always catch me in pants.” “I love dresses and skirts,” Este chimed in. “I like knowing I can cartwheel or throw in a high kick if the moment calls for it.” As for Alana? “I was never into the bulky sneaker trend—sorry, it just wasn’t for me,” she said. “We’ve been into sleek sneakers like these for a while. I love the kind of squared-off toe.” Guests—including stylists Jamie Mizrahi and Elizabeth Stewart, plus Vogue cover star Elaine Irwin—drifted to the starlit terrace, wrapping themselves in LV-monogrammed blankets as conversation turned to weekend plans. While the Haim sisters have long been Coachella mainstays, they were skipping the festival this year. Instead, talk turned nostalgic. “We used to get everything from thrift stores like Out of the Closet,” Alana recalled. “We’d cut things up, wear sailor pants as shorts or a skirt as a tube dress.” That irreverent DIY spirit—equal parts practicality and punk—still informs their sensibility today, even when clad in head-to-toe Vuitton. “It’s so full circle,” Danielle added with a laugh. “Back then, I just wanted to look like a Nicolas Ghesquière girl at Coachella. I was trying to emulate his vision. And now, almost 20 years later, I’m still obsessed.” Marc Patrick/BFA.com2/12Jamie Mizrahi, Babs Burchfield Marc Patrick/BFA.com3/12Lauren Kassen, Laura Love Santa Monicans forced out of their homes by the Palisades Fire were able to return on Monday after the last evacuation order in the city was lifted traffic into the city backed up as residents flocked back to the Northern portion of the city that has been evacuated since the fire broke out last week they are still under an evacuation warning Evacuation orders require residents to leave and violations of the zone are punishable by law Residents under an evacuation warning should be prepared to leave in an emergency but are allowed to remain in their homes While the area north of San Vicente has been under an order since the start of the fire the area between Montana and San Vicente went from a warning to an order and then back to a warning before having that warning lifted Monday morning Residents who do return to their homes north of San Vicente are still under a boil water order North of San Vicente Boulevard: Evacuation Warning  All areas north of San Vicente Boulevard are under an Evacuation Warning. Residents may voluntarily return to this area but should remain prepared with gathered essentials and be ready to leave the area if conditions worsen This area was previously under Evacuation Order.  North of Montana Avenue to San Vicente Boulevard: Evacuation Lifted  The evacuation zone has been lifted for this area There are no active fire threats to this area. This area was previously under Evacuation Warning.  Santa Monica officials have stressed that while residents can return to their Santa Monica homes all entry points into the city of Los Angeles from Santa Monica and Pacific Coast Highway remain closed The public is not allowed to enter Los Angeles evacuation zones "Thank you to all Santa Monica residents who were impacted by the evacuations for your patience and understanding as we worked in coordination with public safety and Palisades Fire incident leaders to protect the community amid a dynamic emergency situation," said the city in announcing the change "We are grateful that Santa Monica did not experience any damage to homes and that our community is safe Countries & Areas Bureaus & Offices About Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program REWARD FOR INFORMATION: GIOVANNY SAN VICENTE Department of State is offering three rewards totaling up to $12,000,000 for information leading to the arrests and/or convictions of three leaders of Tren de Aragua transnational criminal organization including up to $3,000,000 for Giovanny San Vicente The reward offers are in support of the FBI’s joint effort with the Colombian National Police (CNP) to target leaders of Tren de Aragua originally a prison gang in the Aragua state of Venezuela has grown into a transnational criminal organization a/k/a “Niño Guerrero,” one of his trusted Tren de Aragua associates who was in charge of Tren de Aragua finances in San Vicente attempted to put pressure on the Venezuelan government to help control Tren de Aragua leaders at the Tocorón prison she requested the assistance of the Venezuelan government specifically requesting they isolate the two leaders of Tren de Aragua Please direct information in response to the reward offer to FBI and CNP by telephone (voice ALL IDENTITIES ARE KEPT STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL Government officials and employees are not eligible for rewards We use cookies to make our website work better and improve your experience Barnes earns his maiden win at Churchill Downs Barnes will take a step toward seeing whether he can return to Churchill on the first Saturday in May KING: Barnes Delivers in Baffert's Return to Churchill Downs Go back into the entire history of the race and you'll find San Vicente/Derby double winners Majestic Prince in 1969 Barnes gets the services of Juan Hernandez from post 2 "He had every reason to get beat that day," Baffert said of Barnes "And 5 1/2 furlongs is probably a little short for him He shipped (to Churchill Downs) and handled everything well He was in a bad post and got jostled around a little bit .. Barnes  He improved from a 98 to a 99 Equibase Speed Figure and from an 87 to a 94 Beyer Speed Figure in the seven-furlong San Vicente so he's fast in addition to the mental maturation he showed in his stakes debut I still have my doubts about how he will handle 1 1/4 miles in May and I wouldn't be inclined to bet him in any Kentucky Derby Futures pool at the odds he's now listed but my overall perspective shifted significantly and I now consider Barnes a legitimate Derby contender 2. Built  Built won the Gun Runner Stakes on the first day of winter Dec. 21 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots for trainer Wayne Catalano He impressed me in winning by 6 3/4 lengths and boosted his Beyer Speed Figure 15 points to a 92 and his Equibase Speed Figure seven points to a 95 Built completed his final five-sixteenths of a mile in :29.76 with a final sixteenth in 6.26 seconds in his first try in a race around two turns Built is in the hands of a terrific horseman in Catalano who has more than 3,000 wins as a trainer and more than 1,500 wins as a jockey on his résumé Built has a very strong chance to excel with added distance on the Derby trail The one obvious concern coming out of the Gun Runner was that Built was allowed to set a criminally slow pace in that race but he isn't a need-the-lead type as he won his previous race from a length off the pace after the opening half-mile I'm optimistic about the chances of Built to make an impact on the Derby trail and perhaps the first jewel of the 2025 Triple Crown Photo: Hodges Photography / Jan BrubakerBuilt wins the Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course 3. Rodriguez  If you've read this blog over the past decade-plus you know I very rarely include maiden winners in the Heating Up section. I made an exception for Rodriguez a colt that fellow America's Best Racing editor Patrick Reed alerted me to 4 win in a two-turn mile race at Santa Anita was just ultra-impressive Rodriguez set a solid pace through a half-mile in :46.33 and still finished well with a final eighth of a mile in :12.91 to win by seven lengths Daily Racing Form gave Rodriguez a 101 Beyer Speed Figure (revised from a 93) and he boosted his Equibase Speed Figure to a 96 That Beyer number is particularly eye-catching for a 3-year-old colt in January The last few years we've only seen a handful of 3-year-olds per class reach triple digits before Kentucky Derby day so that sharp improvement from a 79 to a 101 while stretching out from 6 1/2 furlongs to one mile serves as a promising indicator a runner-up finish flattered when Romanesque finished second to Barnes later
