Flood warnings were in place at over 200 locations across the Czech Republic at 12pm today
with the highest threat level 3 designated at 44 locations on more than 30 rivers and waterways
River levels have been rising since Friday evening and the situation is getting worse as the rain continues
the Central Flood Commission called on the governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region to declare a state of emergency
The situation is also still serious in the Jeseniky area of Olomouc and the Frydlant area of Liberec
but there are problems in several other regions as well
Trains are not running on dozens of lines across the country since this morning due to extreme weather – some because of fallen trees
Railway managers are trying to get the lines back up and running as soon as possible
but heavy rain and strong winds have continued to complicate the situation since the morning
“The extreme weather is complicating rail traffic
The railway administration is working intensively to remove obstacles
and at the moment traffic is stopped on several dozen lines
We advise passengers to postpone their weekend journey unless absolutely necessary,” CD said
Railway firefighters intervened in 28 incidents from Friday evening until 6am this morning
mostly in the Liberec and Hradec Kralove regions
a spokesman for the Railway Administration’s firefighters
told reporters that the service was preparing for a demanding weekend
more than 60,000 households in the Czech Republic were left without electricity this morning due to extreme rain and wind
CEZ spokeswoman Sona Holingerova and E.ON spokesman Roman Spernak told journalists
CEZ said the most failures (more than 20,000) were in the Usti nad Labem Region
while over 13,000 were without power in the Liberec and Hradec Kralove regions
Several thousand households were also without power in the Central Bohemia and Karlovy Vary Regions
it is calmer in Moravia,” Holingerova said
Several rivers in the Moravia-Silesia Region reached extreme flood threat this afternoon
including the Opava river at Karlovice and the Cerna Opava river in Mnichov
according to data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMU)
the situation improved and the level dropped slightly
Severely raised water levels are expected to make their way to South Moravia by tomorrow
where preparations are underway to mitigate the damage
Around 180 patients were evacuated from the Hospital of the Merciful Brothers in Brno
as water rising through the sewer system put technical facilities at risk
including the hospital’s alternative power sources
“Even though the hospital probably won’t be flooded
technical facilities and alternative sources of electricity through the lower sewer
the hospital would not be able to function
which is why we are evacuating it to be safe,” said South Moravian Governor Jan Grolich
mainly to the Brno faculty hospitals in Bohunice and St
Today we are continuing mainly with follow-up care patients
We will transport them to hospitals in Blansko
Hustopeče and Boskovice,” said Pavel Piler
director of the hospital of the Merciful Brothers
Staff from the evacuated hospital will reinforce teams at these hospitals
The river Svratka reached the third stage of flood warning at Brno-Židlochovice this afternoon
exceeding four metres with a flow rate of 140 cubic metres per second
it was in a dry state with less than five cubic metres
which flows through several Brno city districts
rose by tens of centimetres in the last 24 hours
water managers explained that the rises in water levels are mainly controlled
as part of the preventive draining of reservoirs
the worst of the situation should be seen on Sunday
“If heavy water and floods really come
and we will have time to prepare for it,” said South Moravian Governor Jan Grolich

Scott Burt wasn’t exactly sure what he was getting when he went to meet Filip Kral in Spokane
Kral had just driven from his home in Blansko
before boarding a flight that had stopped over in Amsterdam and Seattle en route to Spokane
Upon Kral’s arrival in Spokane 22 hours after his journey began
Burt and the rest of the Spokane Chiefs coaching staff were prepared to give their new defenceman
But when Burt met the left-shot defenceman in the early hours of Oct
Kral made his WHL debut later that evening
“As soon as he stepped on the ice, you just could tell he had the poise,” then-Chiefs head coach and current Nashville Predators assistant coach Dan Lambert recalled about Kral’s first morning skate
So we said ‘Let’s throw him into the fire.’”
Several months later, Kral was selected by the Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft
he signed a three-year entry-level deal with the club
And the 20-year-old Kral has every intention of continuing to surprise people all the way to the NHL
Until Kral was 14, he was a forward. He idolized Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin
But the coach of the under-16 side at his Czech club
saw potential in Kral’s puck-moving skills and decided to move him to the blue line
he had graduated to the Kometa senior team and was a Czech first-division champion at 17
His coach promised him increased ice time the next season
Kral was languishing as a bottom-pairing defenceman
Lambert had been tipped off by a friend in Europe about the young defenceman
With the 78th pick in the 2017 CHL Import Draft
So Kral asked himself a question: Should he continue playing at the top of the hockey ladder in the Czech Republic
or should he start fresh lower down the totem pole
Some close to him wondered whether he should walk away from pursuing a pro career
even if that meant taking what many perceived to be a step backward
“(Some players) want everything right now and after that
they are stressed and mad,” Kral told The Athletic over the phone recently from his home in Blansko
In his rookie WHL season, Kral finished first in points among rookie defenceman, far exceeding the expectations of his coaching staff. When star defenceman Ty Smith missed time
the Chiefs coaching staff gave Kral more special-teams duties
Fil would really pick up his game,” Lambert said
And working with a coach who had experience playing in Europe and coaching in the NHL and AHL benefitted Kral
Lambert worked with Kral to get him to move the puck quicker than he was accustomed to in Europe
Lambert recalled how often European defencemen would bring the puck behind their net
look up the ice and then begin a set breakout play
“Don’t do it here,” Kral remembered being told
Those words stuck with Kral as he developed his best tool: his ability to move the puck quickly when breaking out of his own zone
The strength of Kral’s first pass came up with every one of his coaches contacted for this story
Delivering the puck quickly and effectively to forwards may end up being the tool that keeps him progressing with the Leafs
he has the ability to make a quick little head fake to get away from somebody and then find that first pass,” said Lambert
also worked with Kral on how to close his gaps quicker and apply more effective pressure to opposition forwards
instead of sitting attentively by his laptop and following the draft results
Kral attended a music festival with friends in Blansko
Standing in the middle of Zamecky Park in his hometown
he was surprised when he got a call from his agent
“And then I went back to the music festival,” said Kral
It’d be fair to describe the Maple Leafs’ expectations for Kral as modest. His stock took a hit late in the 2018-19 season when he suffered a labral tear in his shoulder
Burt and Lambert stressed how Kral continued to play through the pain
eventually playing in 12 of the Chiefs’ 15 playoff games that spring
“Especially at that age when he had that injury
it’s not common that players want to play through that and maybe jeopardize their next season,” said Lambert
“But he was adamant that he wanted to help his teammates.”
When Kral returned for the 2019-20 campaign, he showed no signs of rust. And just as Kral’s game had shown notable improvement over his first two WHL seasons, in March, current Chiefs head coach Manny Viveiros, who had previously served as an assistant coach for the Edmonton Oilers
referred to Kral as “one of the best D-men in the league all year.”
And he finished the year 10th in the WHL in points per game among defencemen (0.92)
the Leafs’ senior director of player development
Pellerin said Leafs director of player development Stéphane Robidas and skills development consultant Adam Nichols have put a “lot of research” into finding areas of his game to help him improve. They believe they can fine-tune him and Kral can become yet another gem who otherwise would’ve gone overlooked, like a Justin Holl
And I think that’s the benefit of him coming into our program,” said Pellerin
Burt saw strides in Kral’s defensive game once Robidas began visiting him in Spokane and drilling him in the essentials of a sound defensive game: Making contact with the opposition player
His coaches were surprised by how quickly he began putting those lessons into practice
Viveiros noted how this past season the 6-foot-1 and 175-pound Kral didn’t lose many one-on-one battles and constantly came out of the corner with the puck
The Leafs are impressed by how well Kral receives feedback
“He has a really open mindset for that,” said Pellerin
the Leafs continue to try to stock their organization with players who can be relied on
Pellerin says he likes the fact that Karl has two younger brothers and how it forced him to be a “role model,” adding kind words for his maturity and humility
“Those are the types of players that you just want to continue to work with,” said Pellerin
“We’re really happy that he’s going to be in our fold and for him to continue to develop his game
only nine defencemen taken in the fifth round or later have signed entry-level deals
Only two of those nine defencemen have yet to reach the NHL
Perhaps a start with the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers next season is possible
surprise some people and instead land with the Toronto Marlies
“I don’t see him spending too much time in the ECHL,” said Burt
now an assistant coach with ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads
Wherever Kral suits up next season, he’ll have to learn to play quicker and harder on more experienced forwards in the defensive zone. But his entry-level deal is a sign that the Leafs hope they can mould him into a reliable all-around defenceman, perhaps in the same vein as Kristians Rubins
who can break the puck out well and push for a top-four spot on the blue line
He might not even enter the discussion for a spot on the Leafs roster until 2023, at the earliest. But the Leafs have just two defencemen besides Kral (Jake Muzzin and Justin Holl) signed beyond 2021-22
And Lambert noted how Kral already possesses the high-level hockey sense and passion for the game that NHL coaches want to see
“Some players get a lot of anxiety from the game,” said Lambert
And he’s a pretty low-key guy in the sense that he doesn’t take things too hard yet he continues to work at it
“If he’s willing to work at his game and his craft,” added Lambert, “then he could for sure play in the National Hockey League.”

Fortum’s 10MW hydropower plant at Vassinkoski, Sweden, is now successfully operating with Thordon Bearings’ polymer SXL turbine guide bearing following the completion of the plant’s extensive renovation and recommissioning work
Thordon’s involvement in the project followed the retrofit installation in 2013 of its water-lubricated bearings to the slightly larger Noppikoski plant
Both refurbishment projects were overseen by ČKD Blansko Holding
the largest turbine manufacturer based in the Czech Republic
ČKD Blansko specified Thordon’s SXL polymer bearings
in addition to SXL axial sealing face rings
Thordon Bearings’ Hydro & Clean Power Business Unit Manager
said: “When we were first approached by ČKD Blansko to supply the new turbine guide bearing for the 1967-commissioned Noppikoski turbine
we were faced with a particular design challenge: the Francis turbine is connected to the generator by a 45m long shaft supported by seven individual bearing positions
it made sense for ČKD Blansko to replace all of these bearings to achieve the best control of shaft position and vibration.”
While the six original oil lubricated bearings were replaced with new oil lubricated assemblies
only the one closest to the water was replaced with an SXL water lubricated guide bearing to support the 420mm (16.53”) diameter shaft
Thordon also supplied a longer wearing SXL seal face material for the axial seal assembly that was installed
This was Fortum’s first experience with Thordon’s water-lubricated guide bearings supplied as part of a major upgrade project
Based on the success of the retrofit and subsequent five-years of seamless operation
Fortum and ČKD Blansko specified a similar scope of supply for the Vässinkoski plant
which also operates a 1967-commisioned Francis turbine and generator
“Aside from the obvious environmental advantages
the Thordon solution provides for a longer operating life and
optimises in-service maintenance since the SXL polymer can be removed without having to split the bearing’s metal housing,” added Auger
Working with ČKD Blansko to help design and build all the metal components
the companies were able to use parts of the original bearing casing but replaced the rubber element with the Thordon SXL polymer
the bearing was submerged in liquid nitrogen at -196°C (-321°F) to ensure a perfect fit into the housing
but this meant engineers had only about ten minutes to install the bearing in its housing
"We anticipate the Noppikoski and Vässinkoski plants will now be operating for another 30-years before their bearings need to be replaced
During the commisioning ČKD Blansko technicians confirmed very negligible water leakage through the axial seal – even less than Thordon calculated during the design stage
The Vässinkoski and Noppikoski hydropower plants
each operate one 10MW vertical Francis unit rated at 333rpm and connected to the turbine runner by a 45m long shaft. Following extensive tests
the Vässinkoski plant upgrade was commissioned in March 2018

Film crews from BBC have wrapped episodes of the series “Great Railway Journeys” and “Getaways” in Brno
“Great Continental Railway Journeys” is based on George Bradshaw’s Continental Railway Guide
host Michael Portillo retraces the journeys featured Bradshaw’s guide
The book gave the timetables of the Continental railways and eventually grew to over a thousand pages
encompassing a guidebook and hotel directory
In 1914 following the outbreak of the First World War
Cover of: Bradshaw’s Continental Railway Guide
“Getaways” is broadcast on BBC1 in Northern Ireland and Scotland and features destinations that can be reached directly from those locations
will be seen by millions of viewers across the UK,” said Jan Herget
“The British come to us most often for recreation
more than half a million arrived,” he added
In its half-hour episode devoted to the Czech Republic
“Getaways” compares the advantages of the South Moravian capital and the capital
Brno is depicted as a modern lively city with an excellent gastronomic scene
and Prague as a traditional tourist destination full of historical monuments
The Czech episode of the “Great Continental Railway Journeys” series will take viewers to Brno
to show how the Czech Republic has changed over the past hundred years
The episode will be aired next winter and should be watched by an estimated two million viewers
Both shows address the growing interest in train travel across Europe
“Despite the fact that rail travel is not an inexpensive business in the UK
there is a growing year-on-year interest in rail transport
The British love to go by train and it is no wonder they sent the first steam locomotive to the rails,” said Kateřina Hobbs

The digitalizing team of Museum SNP (Slovak National Uprising) in Banská Bystrica together with experts from Blansko in the Czech Republic finished a unique project
“Reconstruction of a cave lion skeleton via 3D printer.”
“We succeeded in completing a cave lion skeleton after two months of intense printing on several 3D printers,” said Ján Šperka
head technologist of the Digitalization Centre (DC) of Museum SNP in Banská Bytrica
More than 12 kilograms of material – filament - was needed for printing
The unique exhibit has already been transported to the museum in the Blansko region of Morava
The idea of constructing a complete skeleton of an individual rose during the project “Digital Museum”
when paleontological discoveries of a lion from the Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology in Liptovský Mikuláš were scanned
“The museum in Blansko showed an interest in having a model to use as an exhibit based on the digitalization of the skeleton,” said Stanislav Mičev
It is a novelty within exhibition management
Melis Karabulut has everything you need to know when visiting the natural wonder of Macocha and the Punkva Caves
just half an hour drive from Brno… Credit: MK / BD
Oct 24 (BD) – Brno is a pretty interesting and fun city lately
with tons of events going on and the Halloween spirit surrounding us as well
But if you are getting a bit tired of the city buzz
let me take you to discover the natural beauty lying just a few kilometers out of the city to get some real spook going on – the Punkva Caves
We have long heard about the beauty of the region surrounding the Punkva Caves and the Blansko region
which makes it even more of a great addition to your go-to list
we are limiting ourselves to the Punkva Caves and Macocha
Punkva Caves are the most famous caves in the Moravian Karst
mainly due to the romantic-yet-scary cruise on underground River Punkva that passes through the caves
and also the opportunity to be at the bottom of the Macocha Abyss
The caves are a part of the largest and longest cave system in the Czech Republic
Punkva Caves are highly popular with Czechs and foreigners. Especially in summer, getting a ticket to visit the caves can be challenging. It is a friendly suggestion to book your ticket at least a few days before you go there to make sure that you secure your spot. Online booking information can be found here
It is possible to reserve your ticket by email or phone
Each tour takes approximately 65-70 minutes and involves around 1.2 kilometers of walking
but it is definitely worth a visit even if you don’t understand one word of it
The temperature inside the caves is a maximum of 8 degrees
It is a good idea to wrap up warm before you start your journey
Reaching there by public transport is a tiny adventure
take the train from Brno Hlavni Nadrazi to Blansko
take bus 226 from Blankso to Skalní Mlýn – you will need to pay the driver for the ticket
where you can either walk to the cave entrance
The prices of the tickets may have changed
so it is a good idea to take around CZK 150 to make sure that you are covered
By following the highway from Brno to Blansko
and then cutting through the curved paths leading to the Moravian Karst region; in about 35 minutes you would reach the car park near the Punkva Caves and complete your journey
you reach the starting point that welcomes you with a few gift shops
and a panoramic view of the Macocha Abbys and the breathtaking nature
you will also find the information desk and the ticket office
where you can get some informative brochures
There are several ways to walk down to the entrance of the caves
I suggest the visitors take the telfer going down through the massive rocks and autumn-colored forests
A return ticket for the telfer costs CZK 70
There is only one path that will lead you to the telfer (Lanova Draha)
The telfer will take you down to the Canyon of Pustý Žleb
the national natural reservation of the Punkva in the protected landscape area called the Moravian Karst
This is where you will start your journey to the deep cave world
Even the starting point is absolutely stunning
especially in this season covered with all the autumn colors and an atmosphere out of the movies
As you follow the instructions of the tourist guide
spooky yet beautiful depths of the Punkva Caves entering the Přední dóm
We learn that the caves were discovered in stages in the years 1909–1933
and have been damaged by several natural disasters through the years
decorated with stalactites and stalagmites
The tour guide may shut down the lights or play dramatic songs a few times as you walk through the passages
The Czechs like to make up tales about the shapes of the rocks; such as angels
Legend has it that there is this one unique stalactite and stalagmite couple that is being acknowledged as Romeo and Juliet; not being able to make their ways meet as they are not able to grow taller
The cave rooms lead the visitors to the world-famous Macocha Abyss
which is simply an otherworldly view that cameras cannot capture adequately
You may feel that you are feasting your eyes on heaven
or that you are on the set of Lord of the Rings
The legend says that the abyss received its name after a malevolent stepmother who married a widowed man from the region
The man had a son from his dead wife and his new wife decided to throw him into the abyss to make sure that she inherited the wealth from her husband
the villagers threw the stepmother into the abyss after finding out what she had done to the poor boy
Approximately one kilometer of the walk is over now
and the visitors follow the motorboat ride along the underground river that is still surrounded by the cave ceilings
which allows you to really take the magical atmosphere in and enjoy the ride to the fullest
The journey includes a visit to the Masaryk Dome
which has one of the most impressive views of the whole trip
you have the option to take a nice long hike in the area on one of the many great hiking routes
or you can take the telfer back up to the car park and have lunch or coffee at the Chata Macocha
there is a warm environment that will surround you with much spookiness and beauty
and there is a varied menu for every taste
You can also keep enjoying the spectacular views around the place
or discovering nearby villages and caves for more
