the PS5 Pro achieves 16.7 TFLOPs compared to the PS5's 10 TFLOPs
one of the accurate pre-release leaks pointed toward the PS5 Pro achieving 300 TOPS when performing 8-bit calculations
uses many RDNA 3 features but maintains enough of the original architecture to not force code rewrites on the new hardware
the biggest improvements of PS5 Pro are considered to be its new Ray Acceleration structure using BVH8 (Bounding Volume Hierarchy) and leveraging improved "Stack management in hardware," which means that graphics shader code is now better-managed

Celebrating a goal should be a joyous thing, but occasionally footballers court controversy doing so – as men from Arsenal, Liverpool and Rangers have found out
Scoring a goal generates the strongest emotion in football

Tyler Cerny flung his bat into the air in celebration
Devin Taylor grinned and held both arms above his head.
Indiana baseball’s dugout hollered as Cerny removed his batting gloves and leg guard.
In the fourth inning of Indiana’s 7-5 victory over Ball State University on Tuesday night at Bart Kaufman Field
Cerny was hit by a pitch for the 39th time in his career
breaking a program record set by Chris Hervey in 2009.
“Kudos to him for being more about the team than his body,” head coach Jeff Mercer said postgame with a chuckle.
A highly touted prospect out of Center Grove High School in Greenwood
He earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2023 and a year later finished in the top five in the conference in hits
The junior shortstop has always had a knack for drawing contact from pitches
He was plunked 13 times as a freshman and 12 times as a sophomore
and with over a month left in this regular season
he’s already been hit by 14 pitches.
After he was struck on the left thigh Tuesday night on an erratic pitch from Ball State junior righty Zach Leduc
the Hoosiers’ dugout pleaded for the home plate umpire to pass the ball.
so it was pretty cool,” Indiana redshirt sophomore Joey Brenczewski said
“Everyone in the dugout was pretty much yelling for the ball.”
Cerny made sure to let Mercer know of his record after the inning
He was hoping for an announcement to be made over the PA system — “And there’s a school record for hit by pitches,” Mercer imitated in a classic radio voice — but no such declaration was made.
“I don’t know if they’re going to give you the Rickey Henderson stolen base treatment,” Mercer said he told Cerny.
Cerny’s 39th hit by pitch matched his career walk total
It’s a testament to his ability to stand firm in the batter's box and embrace pitches
In Monday’s doubleheader against Michigan State
“A lesser man would have asked to come out of the game,” Mercer said
But he’s gritty and tough and competitive and fiery.”
Cerny was hit four times in the Hoosiers’ first five games of the season
and he’s added another four to his tally in just the last three contests
Mercer said his hit by pitch numbers have become a running joke within the team.
His bat has been strong — Cerny’s hitting .289 with seven homers and 26 RBIs — but his penchant for inducing plunks has become a viable way of getting on base.
Following a three-game sweep in which Indiana outscored Michigan State 38-8
the Hoosiers extended their winning streak to four with Tuesday’s victory
As Mercer’s squad aims to continue its mid-season revitalization
consistent pitching and defending will be crucial.
so too will Cerny being hit by pitches.

After studying painting and printmaking at Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts
Pursuing her master’s degree in fine arts in New York
she focused on sculpture instead of printmaking.
“I thought I had no history with sculpture,” said Cerny, an adjunct professor at Seattle University and recipient of the Betty Bowen Award and the Bonnie Bronson Visual Arts Fellowship
because sculpture is just ‘stuff,’ and I had a long history with ‘stuff.’ ”
Cerny worked in Cornish’s print studio before starting her MFA
She was making art that doesn’t “have the same kind of place in the art world as painting or sculpture or photography,” Cerny said
“Sculpture fit the set of ideas I was most interested in,” the artist said
“It is this way of thinking about a singular expressive object within an architectural space as not just an object — like a painting on a wall that you look at — but taking into account how the person looking at it dictates or brings meaning to it.”
These considerations weave throughout “Portmeirion,” Cerny’s forthcoming show at the Frye Art Museum (Jan
primarily Cerny’s signature colorful sculptural pieces
which houses more than 100 paintings from the museum’s Founding Collection
furniture-esque sculptures of “Portmeirion” will sit in bold contrast to the traditional
“The (Founding) collection was not meant for a museum,” Cerny said
“it was meant for a home,” namely founders Charles and Emma Frye’s First Hill home
which housed the historical works floor-to-ceiling in the late 1800s.
Domesticity intrigues Cerny: the ways in which family or motherhood can trap us or make us thrive; how the things we collect and live with reflect who we are; and how art
leading one to consider how we imbue objects with meaning
“Dawn’s work looks at the theater and economics of the home,” said Erger
“She’s so intentional about the materials she uses
which are mostly readily available things that you would characterize as ‘junk drawer’ items
But she also engages with the theories and aesthetics of abstraction and modernism
melding all of these things together in interesting ways.”
The finished pieces take on the recognizable forms of functional
mundane household items that take the “threat” out of the art — magazine holders
color and proportion consider the context of art and design history — and the human body.
And while some may find an abstract painting or sculpture unrelatable
a grassy-green shelving unit or a blue side table is familiar
Cerny invites museumgoers to physically interact with the art
“But people don’t tend to have that same sense of assuredness about their taste when they come into a museum
the industry has alienated people from feeling like they can use their memories and intellect to navigate things in an interesting or meaningful way.”
the work isn’t finished once visitors leave the Frye
She suggests a little homework assignment after checking out “Portmeirion.”
“I would love people to think about how they make meaning and then take that inquiry into their homes,” the artist said
“I hope they can take some pleasure in thinking about how choosing and arranging objects says something about who they are in fascinating and complicated ways.”

75% of PS5 players pick performance over fidelity
PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny says PlayStation developers' highest ambitions are too big to be contained in 60 frames per second
and that's why we have different graphics mods for visual fidelity and performance
Cerny also shared his insight into the relatable struggle of deciding between fidelity and performance mode when playing a game that offers players that choice
75% of PS5 players choose to optimize frame rates in performance mode instead of shooting for the sharpest image
faster GPU crammed into the PS5 Pro is designed to eliminate that choice
"Creators have made amazing use of the hardware capabilities, but when I talk to them I do hear about their desire for more graphics performance," Cerny says in the PS5 Pro announcement video (timestamped here)
"The dreams of the developers are bigger than can be supported at 60 FPS
and that leads to an aspect of modern gaming that we're all familiar with: graphics modes
It can be a difficult choice for players."
Cerny all but chose a side in the fidelity vs
admitting the former often leads to "choppier" visuals and "less responsive" controls
the 60 FPS sweet spot often found in performance modes comes at the cost of visual fidelity
or at least narrowing that divide is one of the key targets for PlayStation 5 Pro."
"We want to give players the graphics that the game creators aspire to at the high frame rates that players typically prefer," Cerny says
pointing to the updated hardware's more powerful GPU
so it won't be long before we find out how this will all manifest in settings menus
The coolest part of the PS5 Pro is PlayStation doubling down on one of PC gaming's best FPS boosters with PSSR.

Just before Mark Cerny jumped onstage to reveal the PlayStation 4 during a 2013 press event
he was introduced by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House as the console’s lead system architect and a games industry veteran
House didn’t mention that Cerny had never designed a gaming system until he started working on the PlayStation 4 roughly five years earlier
House also omitted the fact that Cerny wasn’t a Sony employee
and never has been throughout his weird 35-year career

Cerny is arguably the most reputable contractor in video games
Although he doesn’t work for any other company
he occupies a unique position outside Sony’s chain of command
allowing him to follow his interests across projects and avoid bureaucratic roadblocks
Beyond just helming Sony’s flagship game console
which launched on the PlayStation 4 last month
Cerny says he seldom even thinks about full-time employment
The high-level contractor role is mutually beneficial
“It’s clear organizationally that this is welcome,” he says
and arranged to get a PlayStation development kit before any other U.S
he was the president of Universal Interactive Studios
which he describes as a “boutique publisher,” despite the Hollywood affiliation
Universal was more focused on movies and music than games
and although the studio had found some success with games like Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot
the company as a whole was struggling financially
and Cerny’s group bore the brunt of a hiring freeze

They had gone 2-0 up in the first half but conceded twice after the break
the momentum was on Celtic's side and it would not be a surprise if they went on and won the game
that did not turn out to be the case as Rangers were the ones to find the winning goal on the day
According to Glasgow Times
Vaclav Cerny sprinted down the touchline towards the travelling supporters at Parkhead following Hamza Igamane's late winner
he sprayed Celtic fans with water from his bottle
Celtic fans were not happy with the incident and it could end up landing Cerny in some hot water in the aftermath
According to the Daily Record, Cerny could cop a ban of anything from two to eight games for getting involved with supporters under the SFA rules.
Cerny's behaviour after Rangers' winner did not fit that of a professional football and if he ends up being handed a ban, it would not come as a surprise.
The only silver lining for Rangers would be the fact that they have nothing else left to play for at the domestic level this season, if that can ever be viewed as any sort of a positive. So, Cerny missing games would not come as a major blow for the Ibrox club even if it is not ideal.

Well-known Czech sculptor David Černý's recent addition to the landscape in the South Moravian town of Veselí nad Moravou has stirred up local controversy
has unveiled a new sculpture by Černý depicting three dogs
portrays three dogs crafted from steel with mirrored surfaces
Viewers are treated to a type of optical illusion where only two dogs are visible from any given angle
adding an element of playfulness to the artwork
expressed enthusiasm for challenging conventional norms through art
She also said she envisioned Veselí nad Moravou as a global tourist destination
the very intention behind commissioning Černý's artwork was to provoke emotions and ignite conversations
Critics argue that the sculpture depicts the dogs engaged in sexual activity
deeming it inappropriate for public display
A petition calling for its removal has garnered around 50 signatures
with petitioners expressing concerns about the artwork's placement at the entrance to Veselí nad Moravou
The controversy has sparked debate about the role of art in public spaces and the subjective nature of interpretation
While some residents find the sculpture thought-provoking and engaging
others view it as distasteful and embarrassing for the town
the Trigema investment group remains steadfast in its support of the artwork
Boušková noted that the sculpture has succeeded in attracting attention and enhancing the character of the Dog in Dock
Local authorities have not yet made an official comment on the sculpture

Mark Cerny talks about the promise of system's 825GB SSD and Tempest 3D Audio Tech
offers details on backwards compatibility and expanded storage
PlayStation 5 system architect Mark Cerny today delivered a presentation on "The Road to PS5," talking in detail about Sony's philosophy in putting together the hardware and some of the specs it believes will be key for developers and players alike
Cerny began his talk by laying out the three guiding principles Sony followed in designing the PS5: listening to developers
Cerny said he makes a point every couple of years of touring roughly two dozen developers and publishers around the world to find out what they want out of new hardware
The most requested feature he heard from them was one of the first Sony revealed when it announced the PS5
saying "boot times and load times can get pretty grim" on the system
with developers able to load about 1GB of data in 20 seconds
Beyond the potential for reducing loading screens
Cerny said using an SSD could change the way game designers think about games
Cerny said developers have had to mask loading screens
pointing to Spider-Man's subway cutscenes when using fast travel as one example
or lengthy winding corridors between large areas in Jak 2's open world as another
Cerny said it's possible to load things in the world as quickly as the player turns around
he said the SSD should remove the necessity for a lengthy patch installation process after downloading
and should allow developers to get much more use out of the system's RAM
Cerny said there are options for customers who want to expand that
The PS4 had 8GB of RAM that Cerny said would often be needed to store everything that might be needed in the next 30 seconds of gameplay
but the SSD allows data to be moved to and out of it so quickly that it would only need to store everything the game might need in the next second or so
They can use a large external hard disk drive (HDD) that would be suitable for storing PS4 titles
but PS5 games would need the faster transfer speeds of an SSD
Sony will support certain M.2 SSDs that can be installed in a bay in the PS5
but Cerny said the PS5 needs them to support the system's features as well as physical dimensions
Sony will be doing compatibility testing to find out which M.2 drives will be suitable once PS5 launch games reach beta testing
and he believes an official list of compatible options won't be ready until after the hardware's launch
On the topic of balancing evolution and revolution
Cerny said Sony wanted to add new features and improve the efficiency of development
but at the same time it was important to feature backward compatibility with the PS4 and provide a familiar environment for developers
Cerny believes "almost all" of the top 100 PS4 games will be playable in boosted mode on PS5 at launch
Cerny said it was important that all of the system's new features like ray-tracing and primitive shaders would be optional
the PS5 GPU has the ability to run in legacy modes for the PS4 Pro and standard PS4
PS5 backward compatibility will also allow some PS4 titles to run in a "boosted" mode
some titles simply won't work in boosted mode and testing on those is being done on a title-by-title basis
Cerny said he expects "almost all" of the top 100 PS4 titles to be playable on PS5 systems in boosted mode at launch
Cerny wrapped up by talking about the final guiding principle of PS5 development
that's the catch-all category for things that developers didn't necessarily ask for but Sony believes could be important to them in the years to come
One example of such a feature for the PS5 has been a focus on 3D audio
Cerny talked about the company's Tempest 3D Audio Tech
which he said aims to give players a sense of "presence and locality."
The idea behind Tempest is that people know where sounds are coming from because of how sounds are changed by the specific acoustics of their own ears and heads
and that those changes can be mathematically mapped out in a head-related transfer function (HRTF)
PS5 will have five different 3D audio profiles to choose from at launch
Cerny said the PS5 can then reproduce more convincing 3D surround sound
He testified to the effectiveness of the technology
saying that when using headphones and his own custom-mapped HRTF
he has been fooled and enjoyed moments of the presence and locality feeling he's pursuing
The equipment used to properly map a person's HRTF is pricey and impractical to roll out for a console's consumer base
but Cerny said the PS5 will offer five different HRTF profiles at launch that users can quickly test themselves to find out which works best for them
He added that the technology is working well on headphones at the moment and that will be the gold standard for PS5 audio
Sony also has a virtual surround sound version of the technology up and running on TV speakers if users are sitting directly in the "sweet spot," but it is working to increase the size of that spot and improve the effect
Once Sony gets Tempest 3D Audio Tech working on standard TV speakers
it plans to start working on surround sound set-ups
Cerny called Tempest "a journey we'll all be taking together over the next few years," suggesting that it might be possible for people to get more customized HRTF profiles for users by having machine learning algorithms create them based on photos or videos of users' ears
"Now comes the fun part," Cerny said in closing
"We get to see how the development community takes advantage of that feature set."
This article originally stated that Cerny expected most top PS4 titles to be playable on PS5 at launch
Cerny was specifically referring to those games being playable in boosted mode on PS5

One of Prague’s neglected corners will get a new look
The bus terminal at the Černý Most metro stop will be transformed into a comfortable and modern transportation hub
Prague City Hall this week approved a conceptual study by the studio re:architekti together with other experts
The biggest change will be the removal of footbridges and the filling in of the terminal area
The planning of the transformation is still in the early stages and it will be at least 10 years before the results are visible
Assessing the plan’s impact on traffic in the surrounding area is the next step
and architecturally unsuitable for current needs
the transport hub serves up to 100,000 inhabitants per day
over 15,000 residents live in the housing estate around the terminal
They all deserve a quality public space,” he said
The concept study addresses the terminal’s current shortcomings and proposes a simpler and clearer space for users
The aim is to create an attractive place with a square
and a transport terminal that will be pleasant for area residents
and visitors to shopping centers near the terminal
Before the renovation starts, some temporary measures will take place such as repairs to the bridge structure and the addition of a new information system
The study was created in cooperation with Prague residents and passengers who use the terminal
“People could ask the authors about specific changes and at the same time submit comments that were incorporated into the final draft,” Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Praha) director Ondřej Boháč said
and the city’s Department of Transport were all consulted on the plan

2019 8:00 AMExclusive: A Deeper Look at the PlayStation 5Now that the name is official
we've got more details about Sony's next-gen console—from the haptics-packed controller to UI improvements.Sony's PlayStation 5 might just meet this generation's need for immediacy.Photograph: Chris Ratcliffe/Getty ImagesSave this storySaveSave this storySaveEver since the original PlayStation hit the market in 1994
Sony's series of videogame consoles has stuck to the numbers
No "Super," no "Max," no "Code Red Xtreme"; just PlayStations 2
the name of the next iteration has been a question only in the most technical sense—but Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan is still ready to answer it
"It's nice to be able to say it," he says
"Like a giant burden has been lifted from my shoulders."
Sony hasn't said too much about the console since April, when WIRED broke the story about development efforts on what was then known only as the "next-gen console." In fact
a void during which Microsoft unveiled details about its own next-gen console
a successor to the Xbox One referred to only as Project Scarlett
Scarlett will boast a CPU based on AMD’s Ryzen line and a GPU based on its Navi family; like the PS5
it will ditch the spinning hard drive for a solid-state drive
in a conference room at Sony’s US headquarters
Ryan and system architect Mark Cerny are eager to share specifics
When we last discussed the forthcoming console
he spoke about its ability to support ray-tracing
a technique that can enable complex lighting and sound effects in 3D environments
Given the many questions he’s received since
he fears he may have been ambiguous about how the PS5 would accomplish this—and confirms that it’s not a software-level fix
“There is ray-tracing acceleration in the GPU hardware,” he says
“which I believe is the statement that people were looking for.” (A belief born out by my own Twitter mentions
which for a couple of weeks in April made a graphics-rendering technique seem like the only thing the internet had ever cared about.)
which Cerny first extolled for the way it can turn loading time from a hassle to a blink
It’s not just the speed that makes the SSD formidable
Think about the hard drive in a game console
For the console to read a piece of information off the drive
it first has to send out the disk head—like a turntable needle—to find it
may entail only a scant handful of milliseconds
developers will often duplicate certain game assets in order to form contiguous data blocks
We’re talking common stuff here: lampposts
"If you look at a game like Marvel's Spider-Man," Cerny says
"there are some pieces of data duplicated 400 times on the hard drive." The SSD sweeps away the need for all that duping—so not only is its raw read speed dramatically faster than a hard drive
How developers will take advantage of that space will likely differ; some may opt to build a larger or more detailed game world
others may be content to shrink the size of the games or patches
physical games for the PS5 will use 100-GB optical disks
inserted into an optical drive that doubles as a 4K Blu-ray player
given the speed difference between the SSD and the optical drive) will be a bit different than in the PS4
aided in part by the simplified game data possible with the SSD
making for a more configurable installation—and removal—process
"Rather than treating games like a big block of data," Cerny says
"we're allowing finer-grained access to the data." That could mean the ability to install just a game's multiplayer campaign
leaving the single-player campaign for another time
or just installing the whole thing and then deleting the single-player campaign once you've finished it
Regardless of what parts of a game you choose to install and play
you'll be able to stay abreast of it via a completely revamped user interface
The PS4's bare-bones home screen at times feels frozen in amber; you can see what your friends have recently done or even what game title they might be playing at the moment
but without launching an individual title there's no way to tell what single-player missions you could do or what multiplayer matches you can join
"Even though it will be fairly fast to boot games
we don't want the player to have to boot the game
"Multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of joinable activities in real time
Single-player games will provide information like what missions you could do and what rewards you might receive for completing them—and all of those choices will be visible in the UI
As a player you just jump right into whatever you like."
"We'll talk more about it another time." ("We file patents on a regular basis," a spokesperson tells me later
some of those patents end up in our products
The controller (which history suggests will one day be called the DualShock 5
though Cerny just says "it doesn't have a name yet") does have some features Cerny's more interested in acknowledging
One is "adaptive triggers" that can offer varying levels of resistance to make shooting a bow and arrow feel like the real thing—the tension increasing as you pull the arrow back—or make a machine gun feel far different from a shotgun
It also boasts haptic feedback far more capable than the rumble motor console gamers are used to
with highly programmable voice-coil actuators located in the left and right grips of the controller
Combined with an improved speaker on the controller
the haptics can enable some astonishing effects

I ran a character through a platform level featuring a number of different surfaces
all of which gave distinct—and surprisingly immersive—tactile experiences
Sand felt slow and sloggy; mud felt slow and soggy
a high-frequency response made the thumbsticks really feel like my character was gliding

(The company refused to comment on questions about how the devkit's form factor might compare to what's being considered for the consumer product.) Driving on the border between the track and the dirt
Doing the same thing on the same track using a DualShock 4 on a PS4
It wasn't that the old style rumble feedback paled in comparison
User tests found that rumble feedback was too tiring to use continuously
so the released version of GT Sport simply didn't use it
Sony rigged Gran Turismo Sport to demonstrate the haptics in its next-gen controller
That doesn't mean they're not exploring. "The SSD has me really excited," Thrush says. "You don't need to do gameplay hacks anymore to artificially slow players down—lock them behind doors, anything like that. Back in the cartridge days, games used to load instantly; we're kind of going back to what consoles used to be."
That sort of tackle gets a lot easier, Jim Ryan knows, when a burden has been lifted from your shoulders. So say hello to the PlayStation 5, officially. Maybe one of these days we'll all learn what the thing actually looks like.

the construction of the Panattoni Park Unterfranken has officially started
now running at the the Playcrafters Barn Theatre
since I started reviewing a little less than a year ago
this was certainly the most enjoyable night of theatre I've yet had
I sat on the edge of my seat from beginning to end at September 10's performance
as director Patti Flaherty has assembled a stellar cast for this thriller by Ira Levin
who was responsible for such other heart-stoppers as Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives
Aside from hearing its title many times in the past
I knew nothing about Levin's play when I entered the theatre on Saturday
Deathtrap takes you on so many twists and turns
you can’t possibly know what's coming next unless you've seen it before
Playcrafters' latest opens with well-known playwright Sidney Bruhl (the impressive Jason Platt) searching for new script ideas and reading an outline from a former seminar student
one for the type of stage thriller Bruhl is known for
and while discussing it with wife Myra (Pamela Briggs)
Sidney makes a remark about murdering this student and stealing his idea – and thus
Platt does a masterful job of teetering on the edge of sanity to make the audience question
far-off stares are so well played that Platt gives the distinct impression that much more is going on than meets the eye
Adam Cerny plays the wide-eyed student Clifford Anderson
Cerny’s range is beautifully displayed in this show
Clifford proves to be just as crazy as Sidney is about the idea of writing theatre's next great thriller
and Cerny’s acting abilities shine through in his performance
you can truly see Clifford's intensity through the believability of Cerny's performance and especially his focus
she plays the quiet moments shared between Myra and Clifford quite commendably
her facial expressions communicating hurt and worry for Clifford
considering that he may (or may not) be murdered
Deathtrap also features some really funny moments
The comic relief of the play is the Bruhls' neighbor Helga ten Dorp
whom the audience is treated to in the hilarious persona of Nancy Teerlinck
Arriving on-stage with a thick Russian accent and nylons that rise to just below her knees
Teerlinck displays a wonderful comfort with breaking the pre-existing tension
going around the house touching numerous items saying the word “pain” over and over again
Teerlinck had Saturday's crowd in the palm of her hand
and Jason Dlouhy nicely completes the cast as Bruhl’s jittery lawyer
bringing some important information to light later in the second act
The design and construction team of Bob Hanske
and Craig Cohoon have put up an incredibly ominous set complete with deadly weapons lining the walls (many of which are used during the production)
making you wonder if you're in a home office or a torture chamber
did a great job of making the eventual physical confrontations look realistic
This production offers so many twists that if you're a fan of thrillers
then Deathtrap is certainly for you; this was definitely one of the best productions I've seen at Playcrafters
Flaherty and her cast do such magnificent work in building the suspense and tension that at the performance my wife and I were at
an audience member sitting behind us suddenly sneezed
and my wife instantly jumped and grabbed my arm
If that doesn’t tell you that Deathtrap is doing something right
Deathtrap runs at the Playcrafters Barn Theatre (4950 35th Avenue, Moline) through September 18, and more information and tickets are available by calling (309)762-0330 or visiting Playcrafters.com

it's not all going to be rainbows and path tracing."
so while the topics covered are very extensive
elements like the variable nature of PSSR implementations across different titles weren't apparent at the time of the conversation
The discussion also touches on where Sony is looking to go in the future. As Rich postulated in his PS5 Pro review
as well as being a powerful machine in the here and now
this console is also a great opportunity for Sony and game developers alike to get to grips with the RT and ML tech that will define the next generation of games - and that's echoed in the conversation here
If you're looking for some hints as to the direction Sony is taking in PlayStation 6
there's plenty to think about in this piece
the text has been lightly edited for length and clarity
Mark Cerny: My preference is that the game developers do what they feel is best for their titles
Mike Fitzgerald: When we make a game and we work as a whole studio and team on delivering it
we're making some really tough trade-offs between what we want to present at a higher frame rate and what we can present at 30fps
The nice thing about being approached with new hardware is that suddenly those compromises we made while shipping the game go away
We're able to bring together a lot of what made the fidelity mode the fidelity mode and what made the performance mode the performance mode on the PS5 Pro
After spending some time doing that and having a really nice performance pro mode together
maybe some people still want to play at 30fps and we do have this nice new piece of hardware
so what other fun things can we do with it
I knew there would be a lot of different strategies
I was upfront about this in that first video I did
with six games that were shown and the first three do the "almighty" mode and the other three titles do something completely different
Mark Cerny: I'll talk a little bit about the tech we're developing and then Mike can talk about how they're using it
We support one mode that covers a range of 2.5:1 to 1:1
And whether that's an ideal long-term strategy or not
We're looking at the low end of the range and the issues we see there versus the high end of the range
So I really wouldn't take that current 2.5:1 as any sort of indication about where we'll be years from now
I would say a lot of it depends too on what you're moving from
So the TAA that we had been leveraging as a studio - and still do - was really well suited for about 1440p up to 4K
but really struggled when it got down closer to the 1080p to 1280p range
it's a big improvement and gives us an opportunity to spend our time differently there
It really struggled for me playing at home in the performance modes that we had on the base PS5
Mark Cerny: We're definitely continuing with development of these ML-based libraries for game graphics
It's just that there's so many targets to go up against
complicating this is that we announced Project Amethyst with AMD today
So it's not just us developing the networks; we have a partner that we're doing it with
what the partner feels about that technology direction and where the focus should be is also very important
it wouldn't be PSSR - PSSR is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution
Spectral is our branding for the ML libraries for graphics
just like Tempest is our branding for our 3D audio
And so it's going to be Spectral something for all of that
we're definitely looking at what it would be that would be that Spectral something
But Super Resolution is a very good place to start
there are a lot of interesting possibilities there
It's wonderful to think that the game could say it's okay to update or a user could make a decision to update
Mike Fitzgerald: From a developer perspective
I think we can look at our games differently a lot of the time
"I don't want the system to touch what I have confirmed looks good to me and players." Other developers would say
your system is going to go and make my game look better for people without me having to do anything
Mark Cerny: You're not part of the problem
But I've heard you talk about how you really shouldn't be looking at internal rendering resolution and drawing too much in the way of conclusions from that
You really need to be looking at image quality
And I was trying to communicate exactly the same message today
that we need to change the way we're talking about resolution
Maybe we shouldn't be talking about it at all
The difficulty is if you don't have a number
Mike Fitzgerald: Ray-traced reflections are an interesting challenge because they are a composite of multiple images in the frame
And so with the information you feed into an algorithm like PSSR
you're limited in how much you can describe about each pixel
An example would be if you're passing the depth buffer in to tell PSSR how far things are from the camera
it can't tell it how far the window is and how far the reflecting thing is and how far the thing behind the window
you have some velocity information about how the window is changing
but maybe not information about how the reflecting thing in the mirror is changing
This can be really hard to encapsulate in an analytical algorithm like TAA
so that's one of the areas we were hoping to see improvement in PSSR as it potentially has more capability to recognise that type of situation or adapt to it
So really the target is better graphics and it felt like the big three were the right things to go after: larger GPU
it's been just great digging into the ML aspects of this and gaining some knowledge there
Because we know that's the future we're heading into
And so what an opportunity to gain all that knowledge with the Pro
rather than waiting for the start of a true generation and having to get everything right with no experience whatsoever
Mark Cerny: It's really just a question of where you put your resources
And I wasn't seeing - and I didn't think I would see - that many titles that couldn't run at 60
"do all the games run at 120?" at this point in time
"do all the games run at 60?" You can count the AAA exceptions on one hand
for games that didn't eventually run at 60
And so it seemed if we threw pretty much all of our resources into the graphics
we want to give you guys a presentation about what we're thinking about for the next hardware." That's a fun meeting for everyone and we were very happy with where the focus was here
The strategies that we had up through PS4 Pro or the like..
but mostly it's about making the GPU bigger or memory faster
I think we're going to see a lot happening there
And then everything we can get done with ML
which I did not talk about today because it's just such a distraction
I don't want anybody doing flop math based on 2.35GHz because
we tune the set design so that the games are running at about 2.17GHz
We don't want to have the fan have to be too large or the like
I don't think too many games will get up to that too often
The Pro consoles are very tightly targeted around GPU
then it gets opened up - what are we doing with the CPU
What are we doing with the amount of memory
It's a whole new experience for developers
even if we drop words like "revolution" from the conversation
but how can it be a different creature for each of those?" Not gameplay-wise
it's not all going to be rainbows and path tracing
Because you had a moderate boost for the raw graphics performance
and then you had a much better boost for the ray tracing
the nice part was that those things stacked together in a really constructive way
So we were able to use the faster RT performance to get some time to spend to drive the upscaler further
The more sizable GPU came back to cut frame-times down
So I think they stacked well for a game that was designed for the base PS5 and already had little bits of each of those pieces
I liked it because very simplistically looking at it
And so why not spend them on improving your RT or adding a new widget or whatever
"you now have 5ms to do whatever you want to do that's just gravy." Right
Don't expect some massive hardware announcement immediately coming out of this
One target is more optimal architectures for machine learning
And I look at that through a very narrow lens because we're making a console
does it support these lightweight CNNs that we need for the graphics
people want to do their AI or something on it
Because you never want to lock people into just one hardware architecture when they make that stuff
So working on this generalised architecture that's particularly good at the ML needs of consoles
I suspect AMD might frame it slightly differently [laughter]
is incredibly broad and they have big machinery out in the cloud and they have laptops
And the other part of it is for these neural networks
PSSR is the toughest technical project I've ever been in in my life
And it's just marvelous to have a partner who also has resources and expertise that can be going into very much the same targets
I guarantee it's possible to do better than PSSR
And that's just scratching the surface of where we can head
but there are uses I know are out there that we haven't even started talking about yet
Because our customers are different and when it comes down to it
I hope it rung true when I was saying super resolution on PCs is a little bit different from consoles
because we tend to use a variable upscaling ratio and PCs tend be fixed upscaling ratios
So having this ability to grab those co-developed algorithms and then integrate them separately is really going to be a boost across the board
We learned a lot from PS4 Pro - going into that
I thought we had to replicate pretty much the exact timing that the game was running..
The timing can drift a bit and the game will still work
though there's a limit to how far that can go
out of thousands - that wouldn't respond well when did PS4 Pro to the radically different timing
the games are pretty robust when it comes to the timing
So the shorter answer is that on PS5 Pro we just didn't worry about it
We still need binary compatibility - all of the registers that the game was hitting need to be there
But we don't need whatever was taking a thousand cycles before to still take a thousand cycles
It's okay if it takes 600 or 900 or even occasionally 1100
We've already seen that consistency of ray tracing performance pay off even in the Spider-Man 2 patch we've done
We have some RT shadows in there and places where we were bumping up against those divergence limits
we cheated them all so that they were less divergent than would be physically accurate in the water to sort of scrape that performance back
And so we're already seeing opportunities where it's paying off for us
Mark Cerny: I think path tracing on PS5 Pro would be a little tricky to do
There are some amazing engineers out there
Mike Fitzgerald: It sounds like a challenge
Mark Cerny: I'm happy with the launch line-up
We view it very simply - we're just making tools for the developers
We've seen a couple different ways of doing it
there will be a lot more different ways to use these tools that we hadn't anticipated

ShareSaveLeadershipCMO NetworkAmanda Cerny: Not Just Another Pretty FaceByTom Ward
She’s more than just a funny girl who looks good on camera
she’s build her own multimillion-dollar business through brand deals with companies like Paramount Pictures
and Guess Jeans and will continue to grow her empire with her upcoming lines of supplements and merch
she frequently travels to areas affected by natural disasters
Tom Ward: Let’s take it back to the beginning
You were going to Florida State and studying business
(Laughs.) My mom has done Taekwondo her whole life
I want to be like my mom.” That was my goal
but then I got some opportunities out in LA so I decided to stay in the entertainment space
Once you did that you got some exposure and some money
Was it tough to go from that to traditional acting roles
I was at Florida State and the opportunity I got was to test to be a Playboy centerfold
Some of the biggest people were in the magazine
so that’s really cool.” I’ve never been to California before
I was nervous at first (to be naked on set) but then I realized that everyone there had been doing it for like 50 years
with all the stuff going on in Hollywood right now
Every day there’s a new sexual harassment thing
yet the people at Playboy were the most professional and the least creepy
I think that’s why he (Hugh Hefner) was in business for so long
Hollywood loves stereotyping people and putting them in a box
it had the opposite effect of what I thought it’d have
“I’m still going to do acting; I’m just going to do my own stuff.” And it worked out for me because people were actually enjoying my content of comedy videos
Ward: So when you came out to LA were you laser-focused like
“I’m going to give this a shot for six months
Cerny: For me it was acting because I didn’t know social media was a thing then
So it could be a good case study when I go to the agents.” And it wasn’t for like another year and a half
I started Vine because I wanted to do more YouTube
who does a lot of YouTube stuff and has a show on Netflix now — I'm so proud of him — I reached out to him
“Jimmy if you ever need any actors for any of your stuff
just reach out to me.” But he was going to New Orleans to film 22 Jump Street
“OK this is making six-second comedy skits
Ward: Just saying that out loud sounds ludicrous
Cerny: (Laughs.) And people wonder why Vine has so much slapstick in it
you don’t have a lot of time to set up a joke
(Laughs.) You just have to punch somebody at the end of it
Ward: What made you think you were funny or have enough faith in your skills
I mean you don’t come from a comedy background
“I’m going to make people laugh in six seconds.” Why even comedy
Cerny: You have to stick with what you enjoy and what you’re good at
I would feel fake doing it because that’s not me
I was always surrounded by comedians and joking around
Ward: What advice do you have for aspiring YouTubers out there
it was so beneficial to have so many characters to choose from when I was making my videos
If you’re trying to do comedy or short-term videos
find a videographer who’s trying to get into the space so you don’t have to self teach yourself everything
the quality of your content isn’t going to be that great
Find people to collaborate with who have expertise in a certain area
Because nowadays there’s so much content out there that you need to make something that stands out
Ward: Do you know exactly who’s watching this video interview
which they say is the “lost boys.” Because advertising to that age group is really difficult for brands
So that’s why influencer marketing is really effective
because you’re getting direct marketing to that age group
I have to be selective in the brand deals I choose because my fans will know if it’s a brand that I don’t like or use
Ward: Like you’re not going to sell beef jerky because you’re a vegan
You lied to us!” (Laughs.) What I’ve noticed about social media too is that if you’re trying to create a piece of content that is super-entertaining and creative
and not try to hide from your fans that it’s an ad; then they’re going to appreciate it so much
(Laughs.) I want to time it when I’m releasing all my products
is that it’s easy to get caught up in the social media following
but they don’t realize the importance of growing an email list
Cerny: Because there’s new IP that helps you take all of the phone numbers of your customers
where you can send them a direct text for information they want to receive
Even for kids when they want to buy a hoodie or merch from their favorite influencer
who’s now their favorite celebrity; which is what they are
Because there’s still a pecking order: Hollywood actors are up here
I don’t think people realize the engagement of an influencer versus a traditional TV star who’s not active on social media
and a lot of people are going to understand it more
If you take advantage of social media marketing early
you’re going to get the best investment of your life because a lot of people don’t understand it yet
So be the one that does and take advantage of these moments while you can
That doesn’t sound like talk from a random Playmate does it
An early adopter of social media platforms
She has the ability to command an audience while still being able to talk shop with the marketing departments of Fortune 500 companies
Because social media can be so fickle — you’re here today and gone tomorrow — Amanda is already hedging her bets and is looking to help the next generation of influencers grow their careers
Maybe she can help a bald, 39-year-old guy like me blow up on Instagram. If anyone can do it

Luminary has had slightly more mundane jobs than designing the PS4
the executive hasn’t always had such exciting jobs
“But as a part-time consultant on those games
it was very hard to come in externally and do something significant for each.”
He continued: “Whereas on Crash Bandicoot 2
I essentially laid out the entire game – if you picked up an apple
you have very talented full-time designers – several of them
[So] I ended up doing things like usability testing
Despite working for SEGA and Atari in his earlier years, Cerny is very much a PlayStation man, having contributed to the brand’s success in one way or another since its inception. Asked for his favourite memory during that period, the developer responded that it was the release of Crash Bandicoot and PaRappa the Rapper on the PSone
they were being used internationally to express the fun of [the console],” he said
[source officialplaystationmagazine.co.uk]
Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation
from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between
He’s an expert on PS Studios and industry matters
He also enjoys RPGs when he has the time to dedicate to them
I've got a bone to pick with Cerny over the placement of some of those wumpa fruit
@ShogunRok I always thought that they were apples
This is the reason I moved away from the Playstation console series because of the lack of fun game like Crash Bandicoot and many others
I will only go back to them if they do make a remake of them or go back to it's glory days just like old times and do it from scratch
@Qeuix "fun" is a subjective term
Just because something isn't fun in your eyes
The PlayStation may not still be pushing the games that made it a household name
I love the fact that Sony never relies on the "same old
same old" to be successful and instead introduce new
@Qeuix Indie titles now fill this void
@Qeuix there are plenty of games like this
@get2sammyb Always thought they were Mangos
so he was the reason i could never get them all
Sony needs to buy Crash Bandicoot back and put him back in the hands of Naughty Dog and maybe even get Cerny in on it again
@ThreadShadow Never was on xbox...
@ShogunRok @get2sammyb They're not apples?!
I read the TITLE of the article and instantly knew the fruit was mislabeled
Wumpa fruit it is...I suppose a complicating factor is that there's no such thing as Wumpa fruit IRL
@Sanquine Wrath of Cortex and Twinsanity were both on Xbox according to Gamefaqs data
It may have been that Crash of the Titans one on 360

David Cerny's "London Booster" sculpture – a 1957 Routemaster which does push-ups while groaning – has raised a big
transport-related smile from the capital's commuters during the Olympics
Situated outside the Czech HQ in Islington
working-out vehicle is one of many tongue-in-cheek installations from the Prague-born artist
A rebellious mix of Antony Gormley and Damien Hirst
the enfant terrible is as controversial as he is amusing
he was supposed to collaborate with 26 artists on a piece promoting the EU
he faked the names of the other sculptors and made the giant collage himself
perpetuating crude stereotypes of its member states: Bulgaria was shown as a squat toilet; Italy was a football pitch of masturbating footballers
but his larger-than-life social comment pieces are certainly intriguing
Many of his most famous creations lurk tantalisingly in Prague's historic crevices
providing a refreshing and quirky way to explore the capital's centre
Horse statue by David Cerny in Lucerna Pasaz. Photograph: Peter Erik Forsberg/AlamyA perfect starting point is the middle of Wenceslas Square, inside Lucerna Pasaz on Vodickova
bastardised version of the imposing kingly statue situated in the square behind you
from a lime-tiled dome ceiling sits Wenceslas
Though Cerny never comments publicly on his work
the piece is seen to be a damning attack on current Czech President
Václav Klaus – a frequent subject for Cerny derision
Next, head down Spalena towards Old Town Square. When you reach U Medvidku beer hall on Na Perstyne
Colonel Sanders-esque figure dangles suicidally from a rooftop
bearded figure of "Hanging Out" is
casually swinging from a beam with his hand in his pocket
it is Cerny's ambiguous response to the question of what role the intellectual would play in the new millennium; an absorbing sight regularly missed by tourists watching their footing on the cobbles
The Piss Sculpture in front of the Franz Kafka museum. Photograph: Serge Bogomyako/AlamyOver Charles Bridge, the Franz Kafka museum immediately to the right (Cihelná 2b) harbours one of Cerny's most humorous creations
mechanical men urinating on a map of the Czech Republic
Text a personal message to the number next to the exhibit and these chaps will happily waggle their bronze penises around to spell it out for you
Skip past the gorgeous Malostranske namesti (Lesser Town Square) and head up Trziste
into Vlasska – a cobbled hill lined with large
stands "Quo Vadis" (walk 100m past the embassy
left into a children's playground and peer through the railings)
is a tribute to the 4,000 East German asylum seekers who
stationed themselves here until they were granted political asylum back into West Germany
Look beyond the museum into the distance and you will see the result: swarms of these weird mutants scaling the futuristic eyesore
with atmospheric red and blue neon lighting them at night
For the last stop, head south past the funicular railway, and turn right up Holeckova street. A brisk 10-minute walk and you'll reach Futura
which hosts the permanent Cerny installation
Weave through the underground vaults to the tiny garden at the back to find it – two giant pairs of legs bent over and moulded into the wall
Viewers are invited to climb up the ladders and stare into the fibreglass anus
a video of Cerny's old adversary President Klaus is shown
in which he and the Head of the National Gallery are spoon-feeding each other slop to the sound of Queen's "We Are The Champions"
it is yet another example of Cerny's displeasure with post-revolution democracy; the fates of the Czech people
A fitting, relaxing, antidote to the day's walking would be to catch a band at Cerny's very own club, Meet Factory (Ke sklarne 15)
it is a converted glass warehouse in the Smichov district
with two melted red cars nonchalantly hanging on pegs outside ("Meat")
The club regularly hosts electro and indie
and you can regularly find the floppy-haired man in question
EasyJet (easyjet.co.uk) flies to Prague from London Gatwick from £52 return
artist David Černý has a way of keeping himself consistently visible
Černý’s climb to the title of Czech enfant terrible began in 1991 when he
decided to paint a Soviet tank – a memorial to the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945 – pink
Černý made international headlines with his “Entropa” sculpture in 2009
Commissioned to mark the start of the Czech Republic’s EU presidency
which was meant to be a collaboration between Černý and artists from the 27 EU countries
was revealed to be a solo project created by Černý and two friends
which depicted the member countries through satirical stereotypes including Bulgaria as a Turkish toilet and Italy as a field full of masturbating football players
His most recent piece, created for this year’s summer Olympics, didn’t ruffle any feathers, but did manage to garner the artist worldwide attention. Fashioned from an old double-decker bus, “London Booster” saw the repurposed Routemaster get a workout via its two gigantic arms doing push-ups
Along with Černý’s ability to entice people and also infuriate them
part of his visibility factor is that the majority of his sculptures can be found in public spaces
Quietly tucked into corners or curiously climbing up towers
many of his works can be found on Prague streets
Černý’s pieces provide points of interest throughout the city that can be stumbled upon
perhaps contemplated or just enjoyed as part of the scenery
this piece is another inanimate object with human features
One of his earliest works – created post-revolution
in 1990 – “Quo Vadis” is a bronzed Trabant car with four legs
Originally exhibited on Old Town Square as part of the “Old Town Courtyards” exhibition in 1991
Quo Vadis was then permanently placed in the gardens of the German Embassy in 2001 where it continues to reside today
the piece marks the mass exodus of East Germans who camped out in the gardens of the embassy before being granted permission to travel freely to West Germany in ‘89
Among the 4000 Germans who stationed themselves there
Černý’s Trabant also has its own pair of balls
it was written of Černý’s thoughts on the piece “To Mr
Černý [the figures] are an apt commentary on the self-deprecating Czechs
who he contends have gritted their teeth through centuries of invasion and occupation
barely resisting and seldom winning at anything.” Piss is located in Malá Strana by the Kafka museum at the Herget Brickyard (Hergetova Cihelna)
“Horse” is that massive structure hanging from the ceiling in Lucerna passage
often surrounded by tourists taking pictures of it
the polystyrene sculpture was originally meant to hang in the hall of the main post office on Jindřišská street
the director of the Czech post office said it ‘was way too much,’ not specifying exactly what he meant
which the piece has called home since 2000
Wenceslas equestrian statute of which it is a parody
You can almost touch the tongue of the upside down
dead horse on top of which (on the horse’s belly) sits the patron saint
“Hanging Out” happened to unexpectedly catch my attention years ago
I was actually further surprised when I heard it was Černý’s
it seemed to be a bit of a departure from his other works
it has proved to have the same shock value of some of his pieces; when Viselec was displayed in Grand Rapids
many panicked phone calls were placed as the people thought the sculpture was someone attempting suicide
who hangs by his right arm and has the hand of the other in his left pocket
is said to reflect Černý’s thoughts about the role the intellectual would play in the new millennium
Located on Husova street near Betlémské náměstí
the bearded figure has made the rounds to Malá Strana
Crawling up one of the city’s most prominent landmarks
Černý’s “Tower Babies” are without a doubt his most visible work in Prague
alien-like little ones have been permanently installed on the Žižkov TV Tower
were first presented in 1994 at the Chicago Museum of Modern Art
followed by appearances in various other cities including London
The tower project came about in 2000 – the year Prague was a Cultural Capital of Europe
was asked to create a temporary project to honor the occasion
Due to the public’s appreciation of the babies
there are three bronze babies crawling in a corner next to Museum Kampa
One of Černý’s lesser-known public art works in Prague is entitled “Embryo”
The pink blob hangs on a drainpipe on the façade of Divadlo Na Zábradlí
the piece was placed there to mark the 50th anniversary of the theater
The following four Prague-based Černý pieces are connected to galleries – so they’re not wholeheartedly public space pieces – but they’re still worth mentioning
Located in the garden of the Futura Centre for Contemporary Art in Smíchov
Černý’s “Brownnosing” is comprised of two gigantic lower body halves of which you can climb up ladders to stick your head into their anuses to watch videos of (Černý’s so-called nemeses) Václav Klaus and former director of the National Gallery Milan Knížák feeding one another to the tune “We Are the Champions”
which face one another and make various sounds other than shooting noises
are on long-term display in the courtyard of AMoYa (Artbanka Museum of Young Art)
the piece was installed in the former World Trade Center in New York
another controversial piece said to be a direct parody of Damien Hirst’s “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living”
is also on long-term display in AMoYa’s courtyard
Czech artist David Černý has unveiled yet another sculpture in Prague
based on the shape of the Porsche 911 automobile
can be seen from the beginning of April in BB Centrum in Prague 4
eight-meter-long and three-and-a-half-meter-wide sculpture is located by the Alpha office building of BB Centrum in Prague 4 on Vyskočilova Street near the exit from 5
It took nearly two years to make and the investor is Passerinvest Group
It depicts a Porsche 911 impaled on a large pin like an insect in a collection
The opalescent color is mean to mimic beetles living in nature
The sculpture has 11 moving segments that move with the help of hydraulics
my ambivalent relation to the car on one hand
on the other hand a heavy addiction to the iconic Porsche 911 automobile since my childhood,” Černý said
is the spiritual father of the popular VW Beetle
But few people know that he found inspiration for this fundamental design in the work of another constructor
the Austrian chief design engineer for Tatra
who lived and worked in Kopřivnice for many long years,” he said
“His Tatra V 570 was even the subject of litigation between Tatra and VW after the war
So it is kind of a Czech/German automotive jumble,” he added
Art based on vehicles is theme throughout Černý’s career. His first widely known work was the Pink Tank in 1991, originally located at náměstí Kinských
a bronze image of a Trabant car on legs that is a tribute to the thousands of people who occupied the garden of the West German Embassy in Prague in 1989 in hopes of escaping the Eastern bloc
It can be seen in the German Embassy’s garden
a red double-decker bus doing push-ups on hydraulic arms
Ot was originally exhibited in London for the 2012 Olympics
He has also proposed a giant crashed ship that would lean against the planned tallest building in the Czech Republic near Prague’s Nové Butovice metro stop
David Černý and Passerinvest’s Radim Passer
Beetle took nearly two years to make and the investor is Passerinvest Group
“I’m very glad that almost two years from the initial designs
We all want life to return to normal as soon as possible
and I am sure that the Beetle from Mr Černý will help a bit to dilute what is currently a generally negative flood of information
the Beetle will become another interesting cultural and tourist sight in Prague,” Radim Passer
He added that his company has been developing BB Centrum for more than 20 years
we have invested almost 1.6 billion CZK into non-profit projects such as parks
David Černý and others at the unveiling of Beetle
“The idea to also have an untraditional work of art here originated a few years ago
We ultimately liked the idea for an installation with a car from Mr Černý the most
especially with regard to the theme and the chosen position,” he added
More of Černý’s art can be seen throughout Prague. His most visible pieces are the rotating head of Franz Kafka, located behind the Quadrio shopping center, and Babies, a series of black fiberglass infants crawling up the Žižkov Television Tower
Bronze versions of Babies can be seen on Kampa
Aside from the crashed ship on a skyscraper, projects for the future include a train-shaped walkway between two Prague buildings in Vysočany and a giant sculpture supporting a residential building in Karlín
Digital Foundry face to face with PS4 chief architect Mark Cerny
The arrival of the next generation in console systems is hugely exciting for Digital Foundry
Sony and Microsoft are effectively pressing a giant button that resets everything we know about consoles and
the race is on to find out exactly what's inside the new hardware
how it compares with the current state-of-the-art in gaming technology
and how the platform holders have customised their designs to give their machines the edge over the competition
but the thirst for hard data on the performance of the new consoles is unquenchable
what would happen if we had the opportunity to talk face-to-face with the man who holds all the answers about PlayStation 4
when we had the chance to meet up with chief architect Mark Cerny at the Develop conference in Brighton
This was an opportunity to sit down and chat with the man who not only knows the final hardware design inside out
but who would also be able to talk at length about the entire developmental process - the thinking behind the hardware
the decisions behind the balance of the components
and the alternative designs that never came to be
This is also the man best-placed to tell us how Sony managed to cram 8GB of GDDR5 into the PlayStation 4
in what is believed to be a last-minute yet massive addition to the spec of the new console
Despite a 23-year career writing about the games business
it's fair to say that I went into this meeting with a mixture of excitement
but as the interview began to unfold those sensations began to fade
as it became clear that there would be no grand revelations
Acutely aware that he was on the record - with all that represents - Cerny was guarded in some areas
and in terms of the 8GB GDDR5 discussion in particular
what remains is a fascinating insight into the processes and thinking behind the PlayStation 4
the vision behind the architecture and some of the latent potential of GPU compute - something Cerny identifies as an area that may only start reaching anything like its true potential several years into the lifecycle of the hardware
And bearing in mind that Sony carried out a post-mortem on PS3 a year after launch
and actively started development on its successor way back in 2008
will Mark Cerny return to develop PlayStation 5
it was not possible to duplicate his approach
We had to find a different way of making console hardware."
We had to find a different way of making console hardware
In 2007 we started to do a post-mortem on PlayStation 3 to figure out what worked and what didn't and PlayStation 4 didn't really get kicked off until 2008
So at the time that I had my epiphany - that perhaps I had the right skillset for the job - there wasn't much active development
so I work with whatever organisation that Sony has in place
I made my pitch just as they were starting to get going
I think that right now is the best time in the history of gaming to be a gamer
And if you look at it in terms of percentage
you conclude immediately that consoles are small
But that's a consequence of so many more people playing games than have ever played games before
Thanks to tablets and thanks to smartphones
we have this huge audience that now enjoys games
that heavy content I was talking about - Skyrim and Assassin's Creed - is of course key to the appeal and I think on top of that we're now going to have the richness of the smaller
What I was looking at on my holiday was just the instruction set of the CPUs and it really seemed to me that things had been changing recently and maybe we were on the verge of a transformation in the x86 architecture and how it would be used
That didn't mean that we would necessarily use an x86 architecture - all that happened as a result of that was that I wondered if we could add it to our list of options
when our hardware project kicked off for real in 2008
I and the ICE team and a number of other technology people within Sony did a very detailed analysis of x86 and how code would work on that versus other processors
So we looked at the kinds of things we'd been doing on SPUs
We looked at writing in assembly for that platform versus others
We looked at compiled code and did about 15 different presentations showing off various aspects of the x86 architecture
and our first big meeting on PlayStation 4 was with the first-party teams
We spent most of the day going through our learnings on x86
we'd come to the conclusion that it was useful in a console but we had to ask them if they thought it could be useful in a console
There are 140 titles in development for PlayStation 4 right now and we have the strongest launch line-up in the history of Sony Computer Entertainment."
This probably doesn't quite answer your question
but there are so many issues involved in working with a vendor
The business relationship is very important
because you might be working with the brightest people in the business but if their product doesn't come out in the specific year that you need it
There were a tremendous number of considerations and the choice of AMD came out of that
Consoles hit above their weight when you look at the price/performance
One is that the software layer in-between the game creators and the hardware is much thinner than it is on PC
Another reason is that because the hardware doesn't change
you can focus in just on that one particular architecture and learn a lot about it and then the games over the years..
You'll see the benefits in terms of the graphics and the quality of the world simulation and the like
On top of that we did significant customisation of the GPU to make sure that there was that extra target for people to go after in 2016/2017
I think the future's looking very bright for PlayStation 4
I think of it a super-charged PC architecture
and that's because we have gone in and altered it in a number of ways to make it better for gaming
We have unified memory which certainly makes creating a game easier - that was the number one feature requested by the games companies
Because of that you don't have to worry about splitting your programmatical assets from your graphical assets because they are never in the ratios that the hardware designers chose for the memory
And then for the GPU we went in and made sure if would work better for asynchronous fine-grain compute because I believe that with regards to the GPU
we'll get in a couple of years into the hardware cycle and it'll be used for a lot more than graphics
It turns out that they're not incompatible
If you look at how the GPU and its various sub-components are utilised throughout the frame
there are many portions throughout the frame - for example during the rendering of opaque shadowmaps - that the bulk of the GPU is unused
And so if you're doing compute for collision detection
physics or ray-casting for audio during those times you're not really affecting the graphics
You're utilising portions of the GPU that at that instant are otherwise under-utilised
And if you look through the frame you can see that depending on what phase it is
what portion is really available to use for compute
"The point is the hardware is intentionally not 100 per cent round
It has a little bit more ALU in it than it would if you were thinking strictly about graphics."
Knack is a small title. Knack will not be leading the way in terms of utilisation. We'll be looking much more towards teams that have done that in the past like Ubisoft with Assassin's Creed and Watch_Dogs, Naughty Dog with their next titles or Sony Santa Monica with theirs. I think Killzone is going to be doing that
All we are doing ultimately is setting it up so that developers can take it any way that they want go
So if increased visual fidelity is what is most interesting to that team
We just wanted to be sure that they could also dig in on GPGPU [general purpose computing on GPU] as well
it is true that performance per watt is quite good for Jaguar - that has been helping us out in general
We knew that our design space would accommodate either four or eight so we proceeded accordingly
we heard absolutely every answer you could think of
One developer even told me their technology could accommodate a thousand cores
But for us it was very important to find out what the mainstream would be
what the overwhelming majority of the games industry would need
That comes from a leak and is not any form of formal evangelisation
The point is the hardware is intentionally not 100 per cent round
It has a little bit more ALU in it than it would if you were thinking strictly about graphics
As a result of that you have an opportunity
Such a toolchain does exist. It's AMD's HSA [Heterogeneous System Architecture]
That's very exciting but our current strategies are about exposing the low-level aspects of the GPU to a higher-level language
We think that's where the greatest benefit is in year one
The principal thing that it does is that it compresses and decompresses audio streams
So some of that is for the games - you'll have many
many audio streams in MP3 or another format and the hardware will take care of that for you
audio chat - the compression and decompression of that
"Latency in GDDR5 isn't particularly higher than the latency in DDR3
GPUs are designed to be extraordinarily latency tolerant so I can't imagine that being much of a factor."
So the GPU is a natural place to do a number of different types of audio processing
It really does come down though to the amount of parallelisation that is natural to perform for that algorithm
and that does vary greatly depending on what you are doing specifically in your audio processing
I think that as you go forward we will see a hybrid approach in a couple of years where certain aspects of the audio are being done on GPU
Actually the audio ray-casting I was talking about it much simpler
We'll cast rays to see if you can shoot something
You really need to know because it affects the reticule
It'll be a different colour if you can shoot an enemy or not shoot an enemy
you need to check whether you can hear a source or not
It's actually quite time-consuming to do those calculations and it turns out to be a pretty natural fit for the GPU
have them processed in bundles of 64 on the GPU and then the game designers get to make up new and more creative ways to use that ray-casting
That was really a case where our developer-driven process worked
actually what you're seeing there is just the developers were very
very good about keeping information confidential
As near as I can tell that all came from one rogue hacker
how managed to hack into a developer and extract both the Microsoft and Sony documentation
Latency in GDDR5 isn't particularly higher than the latency in DDR3
GPUs are designed to be extraordinarily latency tolerant so I can't imagine that being much of a factor
the target bandwidth required depends on the length of the game
the less bandwidth you'll need to be loading in the later stages of the game
Are you playing continuously as a download or do you play for a few hours and then put the system on standby for the rest of the evening where it can continue to download and then resume the next day
Certainly the broadband infrastructure - not just for the user
but for the country - is relevant when you are designing systems
Our focus has been primarily on coming up with the over-arching concept that will be compelling to users
[Laughs] Can you just put "Mark laughs" in there

Athens - Greek veterinarians are fighting to save a white tiger cub abandoned in a rubbish bin at an Athens zoo
believed to be a victim of the illegal wildlife trade
The three-month-old white tiger was found on Feb
28 under a garbage bin in the parking lot of the Attica Zoological Park by a cleaner
"It is the first time ever we had such an animal dumped outside our zoo," said zoo founder Jean-Jacques Lesueur
"I mean we had a number of cases of animals dumped
but usually these are abandoned pets - puppies
The zoo's security camera video shows a vehicle driving up to the bins before midnight the previous night
Authorities were trying to trace the license plates
I couldn't believe what I was seeing in front of me
I honestly couldn't believe that an animal was in such a state," said zoo veterinarian Noi Psaroudaki
and she is severely deficient in vitamins and minerals
and this makes her bones extremely fragile."
X-rays also showed a metal pin has been placed in one of the cub's back legs
Lesueur said if the tiger survives it will have to be relocated to a sanctuary
as the zoo has no other animals of its kind
International wildlife and animal welfare organizations have already contacted the zoo to help
with a very big killing instinct," said Cerny
"Most of these pet tigers are going to be abandoned or killed."
Wildlife trade in Europe is a billion euro business
and Asia and Africa are common origins of exotic animals being sold to European buyers
"We know that animals enter Greece illegally - snakes
it is not the first time a tiger has entered," said Maria Ganoti
head of the Greek wildlife rescue association ANIMA
which has often cared for wild animals that have been abandoned
"These usually come from entry points like Turkey or Cyprus
but Greece has started to become an entry gate for the rest of Europe."

Dogs are allowed on Prague’s public transit system
One condition though is that a human has to tag along with them
a female dog named Misi decided to have an adventure of her own and took a trip from Jinonice and Černý Most
but her plan seems to have ended there as she didn’t know where to go next
dogs no longer need tickets in the metro so she was not fined
but the police were willing to overlook that
as she didn’t get “ruff” with her fellow passengers
“Four-legged Misi arrived yesterday by herself by metro to Černý Most
She was brought to a security guard by fellow passengers
and he called the [Metropolitan Police] officers
the owner picked her up,” the Metropolitan Police announced on social media
Misi had a GPS tag on her collar along with the name and contact details of her human
dogs have to be taken to have their identity chip scanned
The police reported that she was friendly while waiting for her human to come and get her
then jumped up on a chair and at one point seemed to take commands,” the police said
But this may have been a stealth reconnaissance mission for an even longer trip
“She was very interested in the map on the monitor
Misi reportedly broke free from her leash while on a walk, at least according to her owner. The exact details are not clear. Dogs are required to be on the leash on sidewalks and even most public green areas
unless they are specifically designated as places where dogs can run free
They also must be registered and have identity chips
though some older dogs still have identity tattoos from when that was an option
Many dog experts recommend tags or collars with contact info
as this makes finding the responsible human easier
The previous time she escaped via metro she made it as far as the Karlovo náměstí stop
“The owner cannot explain why she always runs to the metro,” the police said
as Misi is clearly an unreformed recidivist who has yet to learn her lessons
she is a “good girl” despite her wanderlust
She is an amateur, however, compared to Eclipse, a dog in Seattle who for years has ridden the bus solo to a dog park
The black Labrador grew tired of waiting for her human to take her
leading her to become an internet sensation
With Christmas markets opening around the capital

Speaking on The Ref’s View podcast
Conroy stated that disciplinary action is inevitable
even if the refereeing team did not deal with the incident at the time
The former official explained that match officials would have been focused on the pitch and ensuring the goal was legitimate rather than monitoring player celebrations in the technical areas
though he is unsure what the punishment will be
He said: “You wonder what would be the sanction – something will happen to him, obviously,” as quoted by RecordSport
but that wasn’t the refereeing teams calls
“I doubt very much that Don was looking over there
When the goal is scored the first instinct is that all the team is going to be checking that everything is alright on the pitch
it was nothing to do with us (there referees)
“But the SFA will have to do something
Cerny’s antics have already sparked police and SFA investigations
with growing calls for disciplinary action
Celtic have launched their own review of the incident
and it remains to be seen what punishment—if any—the Czech winger will face
He has spoken out after the incident
making the excuse that the stands were close and his bottle happened to be open
all while saying he couldn’t speak too much about it
For those who think it’s wrong that the winger is punished
I ask one thing: what would happen if the shoe was on the other foot and a fan sprayed water on Cerny
Celtic plc do nothing practically ever when it comes to shitco

many of whom also added comments on their area – some singing praises and others giving strong criticism
One was location – many answers attributed a place's quality to how close it was to the center and the nearby transport options
Several responses featured complaints that a neighborhood was too noisy (or received praise due to its tranquility)
Many of you expressed your displeasure at the amount of litter and graffiti in neighborhoods
with multiple people also complaining about dog mess in their area
Read on to see Expats.cz's readers' honest opinions on Prague neighborhoods
Answers have been edited for length and clarity
Just 5 percent of you said you lived in Prague 1
likely because the district is more of a tourist zone than a residential area
who is from the Netherlands and lives in Malá Strana (very close to the John Lennon Wall) says that living there “is very good and safe.” Paul said that prices are high
Reader Leslie said that she enjoyed being near the "hubbub" of the center
but often found the high noise levels coming from tourists frustrating
She also said that the rental prices are markedly more expensive than in other parts of Prague

According to our poll, the majority of you live in Prague 2, with 19 percent of readers calling this sprawling district encompassing Vyšehrad, Karlovo náměstí, Vinohrady, and other neighborhoods, home. Prague 2 also drew the highest amount of responses – some critical, others full of praise.
Tanya, a Prague 2 resident, said she loves living in the district “because of the easy access to trams and trains, close proximity to restaurants, good nightlife options, and closeness to the river." She added: “What I do miss are bigger supermarkets and living around fewer tourists."
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jan Votýpka (@votypka.photo)
Andrew said that what he loves about living here “is being outside the center
but still feeling connected to everything.” He also remarks that “the river is close by and the fortress itself is a gem for running and picnics.”
Another reader similarly said that the area was “quiet and close to the center
One reader who lives here described the neighborhood as being nice
but not particularly family-friendly due to the ongoing loitering and drinking in Karlovo náměstí (Charles Square).
They also complained about people in the area smoking pot or soliciting prostitutes
“Everybody knows these issues,” wrote the resident
who believes the police should do more to monitor these activities.
This picturesque enclave of Prague was mentioned the most by our readers
One resident had mixed feelings about the area: “Although the apartments are expensive
family-friendly neighborhood with a pleasant park [Riegrovy Sady] nearby
Other parts of Prague are easily reachable on foot or by public transport
and the area has several nice cafes and restaurants.”
said that a large disadvantage is that Riegrovy Sady “is not sufficiently regulated in the evening hours,” causing mess and noise
They mentioned “the lack of rules against alcohol consumption in the park" that "often leads to disorderly behavior and lots of littering
If you live near the park and sleep with the window open
you are often awakened by noisy people going home after midnight – especially following a concert.”
Reader Natalia was more positive about the area: “The Vinohrady neighborhood has a nice vibe
making it easier to form friendships.” She thought that the area “is kept very clean by the municipality” and that Vinohrady is “very aesthetically pleasing and well-connected to the rest of Prague.”
Natalia also praised the regular markets in Jiřího z Poděbrad Square
who said he enjoys “the cool occasional festivals” and farmers’ markets in the area
Casey also listed other positives of Vinohrady
such as having “lots of shops and restaurants
and a short walking distance to the center.” He also noted that Vinohrady has “easy access to cycling trails
Reader Alex praised Vinohrady in a very similar vein to Casey
noting that he was a fan of the frequent farmers’ markets
and the short distance to the city center. He did
agree with a previous reader by saying that “rent prices are too high.” He also criticized the sheer amount of dog mess in the area.
There is too much dog excrement on the pavements in Vinohrady
and it smells of urine on many sidewalks and streets
but never come across a situation this bad
The city really needs to do something about it
Although 10 percent of you said this is your neighborhood
just three people commented about the area
who describes herself as living in “Žižkohrady” (on the border of Vinohrady and Žižkov)
“If you go further into Žižkov you get a real sense of personality as well – the tree-lined streets are delightful," she said
Praha má nové nástÄnné malby (muraly) a Žižkov hlÃdá legendárnà Pérák od umÄlkynÄ Toybox! Jak se vám lÃbÃ? ð pic.twitter.com/7e8w0AMCXv
Reader James said that Žižkov was "more affordable than other districts close to the center," but also remarked it seemed dangerous at night due to some anti-social behavior
liked the "wide availability of pubs and social vibe" of the area
but found the hilliness of the area rather annoying
This large and green district is home to 9 percent of people who voted in our poll
said: “Living close to the river gives us a great opportunity for sports – running
Here it is cheaper than living in the city center
yet easily accessible by just one tram line.”
said that their area “has excellent transport options” that will “soon be even better with a tram line extension and a new metro station on the upcoming D line.” The only drawback
is the “lack of useful shops on the main street (Libušská).”

Despite receiving a sizable number of votes – over one in eight voters live here – not many people submitted their opinions about this part of Prague
Those that did comment on the area had generally negative things to say
Alois was particularly negative about the area
“Prague 5 is full of noisy alcoholics in the streets
“Authorities do not seem to do anything about solving the situation
who attend the area for a few minutes then leave
after which the troublemakers return.” He damningly calls it Prague’s “worst neighborhood.”
"Anděl is a real clash of normalcy and a serious drug epidemic”
Another reader who lives in Anděl similarly mentioned that the police “do nothing about homeless people and drug users.” Yet another reader said that they “love the location” of Prague 5
given its relative proximity to both Václav Havel Airport and the center
These were Prague 5 “not having enough dustbins” and too much graffiti in public and private areas
Chris – who lives a few kilometers southwest of Anděl (in Radlická) – describes his area as “safe
and central enough.” He likes how he is just a few metro stops away from the very center of the capital
Although just 8 percent of you said you lived in this part of Prague
this northwest area – the biggest district in Prague by land mass – drew among the highest amount of comments
reader Natalia had many positive things to say about the area
“I especially like how green it is,” she commented.
Divoká Šárka #vÄera pic.twitter.com/KUXLsaCact
“There are many parks in the area or very close by
I also like how well it is connected to all parts of the city – I live just 10 minutes away from Můstek
“Even though there are a few busy roads here
the neighborhood is still very quiet and peaceful
and thanks to the architecture it makes a nice place for a walk
I wouldn’t swap Dejvice for any other part of Prague to live in,” Natalia concluded
A star among the leaves is what you'll find at Letohrádek #HvÄzda. Go for a walk around this 16th century hunting villa which is shaped like a 6-pointed star. Just hop on the 25 tram and get off at "Obora HvÄzda" station. pic.twitter.com/ZoZxFeK1Zw
commented on the relative proximity of major hospitals (such as the Military University Hospital – ÚVN – and Motol University Hospital). Echoing Natalia
he said that the area was “more spacious than other parts of the city” with “lots of parks and nature,” and that the slightly higher altitude brings nice views of the center
He also commented that there was a “good amount of supermarkets” spread around and was a safe area. The drawbacks
include “the poor frequency of public transport at night” and “expensive rent,” according to Nrup
the majority of which is based in Prague 6
has a village-like feel with residents greeting each other on the streets
BÅevnov was the first male monastery in the #Czech lands. Its history dates back to the 10th century. (Try the beer when you go!) #Prague pic.twitter.com/KdGtJ45Y1v
Oleksiy, who lives in Bubeneč – split between Prague 6 and Prague 7 – likes the good transport options, variety of cafes and restaurants, as well as there being “plenty of shops, a farmer’s market, lots of things to do with kids, and the proximity to Troja and Stromovka.” He also appreciates that there are fewer tourists in this area.
However, there are some flaws of Bubeneč, he says. “What dog owners leave after their pets,” the difficulty of parking, low school-place availability, and large amounts of traffic on Korunovační Street and Letenské náměstí are some of the area’s negative sides. Oleksiy also says parking is quite difficult in Bubeneč.
This area, which includes Letná Park and the artsy Holešovice, drew generally positive responses. A total of 8 percent of respondents said they lived here.
“I live in the Letná area and I love it. It is a safe neighborhood. You have the best parks in Prague – Letná and Stromovka – and are surrounded by many cafes, restaurants, and bars. There are also various supermarkets and schools,” said Patty.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by MatousÌ Pudil (@matous.p)
She also added the area is “close to the city center without being among the tourist crowd and is well-connected by public transport.”
Another reader gave similar views: “I am on Marina Island, so it is very quiet and does not have any crime.” They also said that “the area also has instant access to bike paths that will bring me down to Karlštejn or up towards Troja and beyond.”
Although less than 10 percent of readers said they lived here, this area – encompassing Karlín, Kobylisy, and Libeň – drew the second-most responses out of any area.
Nathan, who lives in Prague 8 and has been a Prague resident for over five years, had a lot to say about his area. He says that it provides “great access to the countryside and peaceful spaces such as Ďáblický haj and Čimický háj.” He also noted that the area provides a good opportunity to “escape the city with a quick hike.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Korcan Songelen (@korcansongelen)
“There are some great restaurants, pubs, and fast food available around Prague 8. In general, the whole area still maintains a traditional Czech vibe with a good selection of independent stores and seasonal markets, at Ládví for example,” Nathan also commented.
He likes how the whole of Prague 8 “is not too busy” and that plenty of public transport options are available to reach the center of Prague. He also likes the fact there are many parks, sports areas, skate parks, and even a BMX track in the neighborhood. Nathan does, however, see some negatives in Prague 8. He says that “the dog poo situation is insane” – an issue he encounters every day.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by âðð¥ð£ð (@peka8822)
He also disapproves of graffiti in the area, which “looks nasty and can really bring the vibe of a place down, especially on nice buildings or public transport.” Also, "cycling north out of the city is very dangerous because there are no lanes leading to Zdiby, Ďáblický, or places around that area (except for next to the Vltava),” he adds.
He also believes a lot of sidewalks in Prague 8 could do with being renovated – particularly bicycle lanes, the placement of which he calls “random” and thus difficult to use in order to get to the city center.
The final negative point that he explains is the sheer number of people in Prague 8 “smoking at bus or tram stops.” The district should install more warnings and signs forbidding this, Nathan says.
Karlín is “very close to the center but without many tourists, safe, quiet, green, and has many shops and supermarkets available,” said one reader. Reader Amy liked how flat Karlín is, making it easy for walking, and appreciated the numerous (as well as fast) connections to the center.
“Karlín has everything I need, and sometimes I go almost an entire week without leaving the neighborhood”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kasárna KarlÃn (@kasarna_karlin)
“It has lots of nice parks and access to the bike trail next to the river
and it is very quiet during the day,” Amy added
She concluded by saying: “the only downside is that the rent prices are a bit high
but I’ve decided it’s worth the cost to be in such a great location.”
also appreciated the good transport connections that Karlín offers
though believes that there should be bus services near to Křižíkova metro station
He also criticized the non-working wifi at the metro and tram station at Křižíkova
Another reader who lives in the Prague 8 region of Libeň praised the “brilliant transport links,” proximity to the center
and the area’s cycle-path network (for example
along the Rokytka stream and Vltava).
They also commented on Libeň’s “lovely architecture,” giving Libeň Castle as an example
and the “great restaurants and cafes in the neighborhood,” citing the Palmkovka restaurant and EMA espresso bar. According to this reader
the “only real negative of Libeň is the amount of litter – especially beer cans and spirit bottles – in the area.”

Gabriella, who lives in the Kobylisy area, says: “The parks are very nice, however, there are many homeless and suspicious people in the area. This makes the neighborhood pretty unsafe – especially at night.”
Housing Prague’s O2 Arena, just 4 percent of people voted that they live in this northeast section of Prague, but it was generally rated positively by readers. Reader Justin who lives in Prosek said that the “location is a perfect distance out of the city center” to ensure quietness while maintaining relative closeness to the center. “Being close to the metro’s B and C lines means everywhere in the city is reachable,” he added.

Amanda agreed with this saying that the area had “excellent transport connections,” and noting that Vysočany is a “safe
quiet neighborhood” with “affordable rent.” She interestingly pointed out that “lots of construction and residential developments” may well bring a lot more local businesses to the area
Another advantage that Justin pointed out was being “close to a number of cycling routes,” although he did note that the area’s cycle network is disjointed
“It feels like a pretty safe area too,” he added
The disadvantages he mentioned were the amount of traffic and noise from passing vehicles.

with 8 percent of you saying you live here
Pavel said that Vršovice has “convenient public transport connections” and that it is “easy to get to any of the three metro lines
or pretty much anywhere in the city.” He also noted that it is a “nice
with lots of shops and service points (such as banks or post offices) in close proximity
reader Stefan commented on its “calmness and safety.” He also said there are “many restaurants and coffee places to choose from.” Stefan said Vršovice “generally has a very local vibe,” something he loves
“There are lots of trees and parks in Vršovice and the best craft beer pubs in the world,” said Susan
also commented on the presence of many parks in the area but said “the removal of trees and greenery at the Ruská tram stop” was a negative point

Reader Matic echoes other Vršovice residents’ views
commending the fact there are “many parks nearby” and praising its high levels of safety
“What I don't like is the cleanliness on the streets
also appreciates the fact that Vršovice is not “super touristy,” but still has access to everything
They particularly like Cafe Bar Pilotů in the neighborhood.
A small fraction of respondents said they lived here
and the convenient transportation.” He also remarked that rent in the area is “a lot lower” than near the center and offers more value in terms of square meters
Just 2 percent of readers said they lived in Prague 12
although they provided almost completely positive feedback about the area
describes the area as being “family-friendly” and affordable enough to buy an apartment over 100 square meters – something that would not be possible in the center
“The Modřanská rokle nature reserve and closeness to the Vltava River are perfect for when you have children,” she also commented

She remarks that the area “has great and fast access to the center” and is “quiet at night.” The convenience of having shops such as Billa, dm-drogerie markt, and Teta on one square is also a big advantage, Jody wrote.
One downside to Modřany, she says, is the “cuisine culture” in the area, which suffers from a lack of diversity and choice. Jody used to live in Karlovo náměstí, an area she describes as having far more options.
Erdem, who lives to the west of Modřany – in Kamýk – describes the area as having “a really chill neighborhood close to the office buildings in Chodov.” He mentions, though, that the construction of new tram lines on Novodvorská Street has disrupted traffic in Kamýk.
