A wave of factory closures is sweeping across Czechia impacting thousands of workers and signaling broader economic challenges in key industries and shifts in consumer behavior are prompting companies to streamline operations or relocate production An economic downturn in neighboring Germany is also exacerbating the situation with ripple effects felt across Czechia’s manufacturing sector which specializes in off-road tires for agricultural machinery has been deemed inefficient and reliant on outdated processes Approximately 270 workers will be affected Mitas continues to operate production plants in Zlín but the company has significantly reduced its output in recent years YRC cited inflation and rising operational costs as key factors making the Prague plant unprofitable Production will be relocated to other YRC facilities as the company adapts to evolving consumer demands and focuses on innovation and digitalization German food manufacturer Dr. Oetker will also shutter its Kladno plant this year, resulting in 114 layoffs from its 188-strong workforce. Rising employee, energy, and raw material costs, coupled with the plant’s inability to modernize, were cited as reasons for the closure The Kladno facility is the firm’s only production plant in the entire Czech Republic "The situation on the retail market has changed significantly in recent years due to the forced increase in costs Food manufacturers are exposed to ever-increasing economic pressure," the company said Administrative operations will continue to ensure product distribution in the Czech market American-Irish automotive seat manufacturer Adient will close its plants in Česká Lípa and Stráž pod Ralskem (both Liberec) eliminating 1,100 jobs over the next two years The closures are part of a broader restructuring effort driven by declining market volumes "The automotive industry is undergoing significant transformation with suppliers facing fundamental challenges," said an Adient representative The Česká Lípa plant is set to close by late 2026 while the Stráž pod Ralskem facility will cease operations earlier that year Economic and industrial woes in Germany have led to the planned closure of several plants belonging to major car manufacturers This is expected to affect several factories near the Czech-German border “The situation is serious because consumer demand has slowed in Western Europe,” Radek Špicar, vice-president of the Czech Union of Industry and Transport, said in 2024 He explained that the automotive sector’s shift toward clean mobility and regulatory costs and fines has increased economic pressure German automotive parts manufacturer Schaeffler may also cut jobs in Czechia it announced plant closures in Austria and the UK it operates plants in Lanškroun and Svitavy These closures underscore the challenges facing Czechia’s manufacturing sector long a cornerstone of the nation’s economy the closures also highlight the need for retraining programs and investment in modernized facilities to sustain employment and competitiveness in the region Your morning coffee deserves a great companion. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Zámek ÄŒastolovice (@zamekcastolovice) nicknamed the "gateway to Hell," will also reopen this month Chateau Kněžice will reopen this weekend with a special Easter market and the Dolní Kounice castle in Brno will begin special weekend tours later this month The Boskovice Castle north of Brno will also reopen this month after the winter break The opening of the Czech castle tourist season will culminate next month during the Days of Private Castles and Chateaux when many landmarks not normally open to the public will open their doors A total of nineteen privately-owned castles not usually accessible to the public will be opening their doors this year for the Days of Private Castles and Chateaux from May 25-28; more information can be found from the website of the Association of Castle and Chateau Owners While the standard of healthcare throughout the Czech Republic has been generally rising over the past two decades some areas may be getting better than others a Česká Lípa hospital that reportedly requires its patients to bring their own toilet paper with them upon arrival “If your mother is taken to the hospital by an ambulance and the first SMS that she sends after hours of nervous waiting is ‘bring me toilet paper,’ something is wrong,” Vít Vomáček, Mayor of nearby town Kravaře, told iDnes.cz Vomáček is peaking with personal experience regarding the issue: his 86-year-old mother was allegedly told to source her own toilet paper at the hospital “I pointed this out to the Governor in 2016,” Vomáček says Our fellow citizens are still required to bring their own toilet paper So we ran out of patience and got together and sent them some.” Kravaře ran a drive for TP funds that collected around 10,000 crowns which the town used to buy 1,600 rolls of toilet paper that it sent to the hospital While the hospital accepted 20 large bags containing the 1,600 rolls – its director even signed a donation contract – they made no official statement or acknowledgement of the shipment it isn’t only toilet paper that patients are required to bring and other personal items are also expected to be sourced by patients “Remember to take your personal needs (safe slippers, pajamas, cutlery) and personal hygiene items (towel, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, washcloth, toilet paper, etc.) for hospitalization,” the hospital website clearly states “There is no problem,” spokesperson Kateřina Amrichová told iDnes.cz “The fact is that toilet paper is available for patients and visitors at all hospital wards and non-hospital wards as well as in toilets freely accessible in the health center.” toilet paper and other items fall under a standard hygiene package that is reimbursed by insurance companies “The cost of toilet paper is covered for hospitals as part of overhead which is added to the value of the payment for the treatment day,” VZP spokesperson Oldřich Tichý says “It is therefore an item covered by health insurance companies The patient only needs to bring personal hygiene items to the hospital they do not have to bring toilet paper or even incontinence aids if they suffer from incontinence While that should be the final word on the issue it’s of little solace to Vomáček and other patients who claim that they have been forced to bring their own toilet paper to the Česká Lípa hospital for years and the Uherské Hradiště district in southeast Moravia are red in the latest traffic light map of the Czech Republic The red color indicates community transmission Health Minister Roman Prymula said at a press conference today The remaining 18 districts are green (low risk) Secondary schools in the yellow and red regions will close for two weeks as of Monday The following districts are green: České Budějovice "The negative trend of the COVID-19 disease still continues in Prague," Prague public health officer Jarmila Razova said "The average daily rise in the past week is 430 cases the positive cases are still mostly young people The positive cases are also related mainly with schools and school activities related to free time." Prymula said previously the map would have just one color soon He said the map may turn orange with some red areas or it might turn completely red To view the map, click here Czech railways are introducing a long-awaited change: the availability of a new mutually recognized by competing railway carriers, for all trains it has only been a pilot program with two routes running between Plzeň and Most passengers must purchase individual tickets for specific trains The new system will simplify the purchasing process especially when the trip involves several carriers on a specific route different carriers on the same route might not recognize each other's tickets Thirteen total carriers have signed a single tariff agreement with the Ministry of Transport This will mean added convenience for travelers who, for instance, miss a train and want to board via the next connection, even if it's operated by another company. Passengers will also be able to buy an e-ticket for the entire journey via the OneTicket mobile app (more details available on the app's English-friendly website) The flexible OneTicket system is based on a per-kilometer price to travel from Prague to Česká Lípa through Mladá Boleslav with Arriva Trains or through Lovosice on České dráhy (ČD) which means that having more options with the new ticket-type does not always mean it will be the most cost effective there are prepaid options that offer discounts Using OneTicket (via their mobile app or online) travelers can choose from three different ticket types which will be valid across all participating carriers along certain routes the new OneTicket will be available for the entire domestic network there should also be a discount plan available much like the current IN25 and IN50 discount programs from CD which provide passengers with cheaper tickets when they sign up and pay a yearly fee that will apply to all carriers participating in the OneTicket program These aren’t just staples of the Czech diet–they’re among 100+ different kinds of ice cream that you can sample at gourmet ice cream parlor Ralsko in Mimoň outside of Česká Lípa in the Liberec region of the Czech Republic Ralsko has become a destination stop in the small town of Mimoň during the summer months with a unique lineup of ice cream flavors that few other parlors in the country can compete with named for the traditional Hungarian sausage that it is made with “It’s better than sex,” proprietor Ivana Jablonovská, who has been making ice cream since 2000, jokingly tells Právo She’s quick to point out that sausage and other varieties are not artificial flavors but real ingredients the ice cream is made with “These aren’t ‘flavors’; these are the ingredients that the ice cream is really made from.” Ralsko’s sausage ice cream in Czech newspaper Právo Other ingredients used to concoct the unique flavors at Ralsko include mustard But the Hungarian sausage has been a best-seller this year “There’s been a great response to the Čabajková,” says Jablonovská “You can have [a scoop of] bread and sharp mustard with it and it’s a real hit.” The mustard ice cream Ralsko produces between 280 and 350 liters of ice cream They have so many flavors to offer that they can’t all be displayed we can no longer fit them all into the showcase [In total] we have already produced 427 different kinds.” If you’re looking for some sausage ice cream without making the journey to Mimoň Čabajková is among 15 flavors of ice cream that Jablonovská has patented with the Czech Industrial Property Office Ralsko’s Hungarian sausage ice cream may not even be the strangest ice cream to come out of the Czech Republic in recent years.
