The Stanley Cup was eaten. Thankfully not the original one but only its sweet copy prepared by a local pastry shop in Frydek-Mistek, a Silesian town in the eastern part of the Czech Republic where Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ondrej Palat welcomed the trophy Wednesday
A cake with grey icing the same size as the Cup was shown to more than a thousand fans on the main square of Palat's hometown
and a piece of 'Cup-cake' started to build up two hours before Palat and the trophy arrived at the square. After that
Palat brought the Cup to the local arena Polarka where he showed it to dozens of young hockey players from Frydek-Mistek."It was quite tough to carry the Cup around town all day but these are beautiful moments and no piece of my body hurts," Palat said at the ice rink
"I think I signed a couple of thousand autographs today
It is a busy day today but to bring the Stanley Cup here in Frydek has been my dream and I am really enjoying it right now."
Ministerstvo dopravy vyhovělo připomínkám a navrhuje v nové vyhlášce bezplatné užívání tří úseků dálnic v celkové délce 13 kilometrů
Nově by od příštího roku mohli řidiči využívat zdarma úsek D11 Sedlice – Kukleny (exity 84 – 90)
úsek D35 Sedlice – Opatovice nad Labem (exity 126 – 129) a úsek D48 Frýdek-Místek – Dobrá (km 50 – exit 54)
Konkrétně peníze mohou jít například na dva nejpřipravenější úseky tratí Velim – Poříčany a Dětmarovice – Petrovice u Karviné – státní hranice s Polskem

TAMPA, Fla. — The moment Ondrej Palat scored the game-winner in Friday’s Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final
as shown by the size of the crowd at Palat’s day with the Stanley Cup last summer
“The mayor said it was the biggest spontaneous people gathering since the Velvet Revolution in our town square,” Jakub Mikulik
And when Palat scored late in the third period — his 12th career playoff game-winning goal — his father
He’d have to go to the liquor store the next day
“We didn’t know if myself and Ondrej’s parents would be there alone and have to eat 100 servings of goulash,” Mikulik joked
And other than those who were too wiped out from a nearby music festival they attended first
with Palat scoring at approximately 4:30 a.m
“The atmosphere was truly magical because we had a big screen projection rather than a big LED screen
which works much better when it’s dark,” Mikulik said
“So we lit up the arena only with small lights that are on the stairs
and the whole atmosphere felt like a clear night with millions of stars around us.”
The Lightning win meant that Palat’s parents’ game-day rituals worked
Hockey players are notoriously superstitious
but Pavel and Hana may have them all topped
Here’s their routine on Lightning game days:
Pavel’s library and rum shelf have become almost like a scrapbook of Ondrej’s career
with every rum and book marked with the game opponent
it makes it that much more special with his added story behind it,” Mikulik said
Mikulik got to know Palat and his family over the past five years while working for the local hockey club in Frýdek-Místek
Pavel is in charge of recruiting and Mikulik is responsible for the professional team
so they put together events to connect them both
playing with borrowed or used equipment in the industrial town that is home to coal miners and steelworkers
Pavel a soccer coach who now runs the youth academy
they finally were able to afford to buy him Nike skates he had begged for
the family left the bag with the skates in the car while they went to the grocery store
But Palat recalled how countryman Pavel Kubina donated equipment to kids in their shared hometown after Kubina won the Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Lightning
Kubina brought hockey’s holy grail to Frýdek-Místek
sparking Palat’s dream of him one day doing the same
“He’s ‘Sneaky P,’” captain Steven Stamkos said
“You have a player that’s played for you this long
Palat practices with the local professional team HC Frýdek-Místek
getting on the ice with them and signing autographs
He donated equipment to them from Bauer through the NHLPA Goals and Dreams fund
which aided grassroots hockey programs for economically-disadvantaged children
There’s a sign under the big LED scoreboard at Palat’s local rink in Frýdek-Místek
It’s a large team photo of the youth team there
but translates to: “Congratulations Ondrej and thank you for being a role model for our young hockey players.”
“Everyone wants for Christmas and birthdays a Lightning hat or a shirt,” Pavel said
will those in Frýdek-Místek be wearing Lightning gear next year
Palat is set to be an unrestricted free agent in a few weeks
which means this could very well be his last few games in a Tampa Bay uniform
And Palat would likely have to take a team-friendly deal to remain with the only team he’s ever known
talked about how much the kid he once healthy-scratched in AHL Norfolk has become one of his favorites
And Tampa Bay has become Palat’s second home
settling in a Davis Islands home with their 3-year-old daughter
“I know Ondrej definitely wants to stay,” Mikulik said
“He absolutely loves everything about Tampa
Coach (Jon) Cooper has been with him for more than a decade
It would definitely be his number one choice by far to stay.”
Mikulik jokes that Pavel needs to be employed by the Lightning as their No
1 “international ambassador.” After Friday’s Tampa Bay win
Pavel took a dip in the pool and planned out his trip to pick up another bottle of rum
Said Mikulik: “It’s going to be one of the best from his collection.”

The growing trend in basic service provision has its own name – zero-fare
Transport mobility as a basic human right and free service: Who would’ve thought this could be possible some decades ago
in the EU more and more places are starting to embrace the idea and offer their residents (and tourists) the chance to move about their city without financial worries
comfortable life as a modern urban denizen is seen as a necessity in prospering societies
such as CO2 emission from private transport
traffic congestion and the need for more spaces have been weighed as issues that need solutions
And then there was the war in Ukraine and the consequent rise in fuel prices that showed the precariousness of having to rely on individual car ownership
The Luxembourg government was the first to respond, making the country back in 2020, the first in the world to offer free public transport and beyond
which will take the same step on 1 October 2022
Making public transport free across the board in larger societies could still be too complex and inefficient. Most recently, the case of Germany’s 9-euro ticket experiment showed that it can lead to overcrowding and problems during critical moments like public holidays
More practical and easier to manage is the introduction of free public transport in towns
it could then be scaled up to a larger area
The approach is also known as zero-fare or free-fare transport
it was actually first tried in a suburb of Toulouse called Colomiers in 1971 and the service there survived until 2016
when it closed down due to reorganization and inefficiency
Things are only looking up though as increasing number of European local authorities are showing their dedication to the provision of public goods that benefit the people
And they are not afraid to experiment in uncharted territory
the inhabitants of Tallinn (Estonia’s capital) voted overwhelmingly in favour of free public transportation
The problem in Tallinn can be compared to the problem in Luxembourg City: thousands of commuters travel to the city centre every day
many people with low incomes struggled to pay
The system has been functioning without any major hitches for almost a decade now
even if analysts say it hasn’t led to a reduction in private cars on the streets
residents can travel on public transport for free
A study conducted a few months after the switch found that it had discouraged locals to drive their cars
Although two-thirds of respondents said they had depended on cars
over half said they were now regularly riding buses to get around
About 5% even said the availability of free buses helped convince them to sell their car or not buy a second vehicle
Aubagne (also in France) was a pioneer in implementing the first free tram network in the world
and public transport has been free there since 2009
the initiative turned out to be a great success
there were 5,000 fewer cars driving around the city every day
The popularity of public transport also rose by 235 per cent
Cascais is, so far, the only municipality in Portugal to have opted for free-fare public transit. And it is happy with the results
Anyone who has heard of Livigno is probably also an avid skier
This village in the Italian Alps offers its public transport free of charge from 7:30 in the morning until 20:00 in the evening
The town is very clear to its visitors: nobody needs a car to discover it and this sure sounds like a good way to stand out among winter destinations
you might want to explore some island vibes in the North
where you can ride the bus for free all you want
It is known as the sunniest place in all of Denmark and its colourful houses and modest locals make it an easy-to-choose destination
Keep in mind that the ferry that gets you to the island
Many people would rejoice if Amsterdam were to implement a completely free public transit network
the good news is that the city ferries floating on its canals are indeed free to pedestrians
we would find that there are notable examples of free transport as well
people can use free public transportation in Frýdek-Místek
The number of passengers increased by as much as 40 per cent during the first two years
What’s really cool is that the free buses take you easily to villages further away and thus go beyond the town’s borders to provide a service for the adjacent regions
The longest free ride takes you 30 kilometres further to the touristy Beskydy mountain
The regional expansion aspect of zero-fare services has also been introduced in parts of the Lower Silesia region in Poland
in Lubin and throughout its canton and in some agglomerations of the canton of Legnica
an industrial city with 100,000 inhabitants
Samokov is a town in Bulgaria with about 27,000 inhabitants
lying at the foot of the Rila Mountains on the way to the country’s famous Borovets ski resort
The initiative was initially intended for residents only
public transport was offered free of charge to everyone
Velenje is the sixth largest city in Slovenia, and one of the 100 recently selected Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030
It has a network of free yellow buses that transport you around the city
These are some notable examples of European cities
which would be also worth visiting this summer in order to try their free transit offer first-hand
Whether they will serve as an inspiration for the scaling-up of zero-fare transport on a wider scale remains to be seen

In a cultural heritage building in central Frýdek-Místek, Czech Republic, sits Ondřej Bělica’s Clair Plum Salon, a multifunctional space uniting a hair salon with an architectural-sculptural studio and residences
centered around the core element of a suspended wooden triangle
this creates a stage-like podium which doubles as a sculptural centerpiece tying the various functional programs together at a focal point

and flowers to bring a cottage-like atmosphere into the city center
creating an ‘oasis of calm’ amid the busy space
the interior is defined by the key elements of local wood
shaped by simple techniques and low-cost materials such as roof battens
Clair Plum Studio offers a different kind of mood during the day
Clair Plum Salon was created in the site of former medical practices in the city’s central square. Architect Ondřej Bělica sought to bring a touch of cottage living into the city center
infusing elements of greenery and wooden materiality across the space
All pieces of wood were sourced from small local companies
The studio is dominated by a lattice structure that divides the space into a working and a rest area
which is connected to a vaulted multifunctional room and a workshop
Creating separate zones with efficient functionality
a system of solid spruce wooden shelves are anchored to the walls
meanwhile stainless steel work surfaces with storage spaces are integrated on either side
most furniture pieces in the studio were custom made by the team
while the remaining were adopted for reuse
Injected a sense of artistic sensibility throughout
the design team uncovered the original paintings on the main wall and created a single large-format image
the serene space sits amid a central square
the ‘brain’ of the studio is the designer table

was founded by Gevorg Avetisjan in Frýdek-Místek in 2003 and initially had only one employee
it has 340 employees and exports its products to 53 countries
made according to an old Armenian family recipe
The story of Marlenka honey cakes is closely linked to the life story of Gevorg Avetisjan
who came from Armenia to the Czech Republic in 1995
Gevorg Avetisjan and his sister founded the Czech company MARLENKA International s.r.o
producing MARLENKA®️ honey cakes according to an ancient Armenian family recipe
The cake was named MARLENKA in honor of the owner’s mother and daughter
increasing the number of employees to 85 and resulting in an annual production of 250,000 cakes
the company was operating with 186 employees and an annual production of more than one million cakes
MARLENKA®️ products began to be exported to neighboring countries
a new 4,000 m² production hall was completed
featuring a fully automated production line that took two years to develop specifically for the production of MARLENKA®️ honey cakes and is the only one of its kind in the world
The product range gradually expanded to include other family recipes
MARLENKA®️ products were being exported to more than 35 countries worldwide
a new Visitor Center was opened to the public
which in 2021 was expanded to include the first original MARLENKA shop
including 40 proprietary products and 10 licensed ones
the company produces over nine million products annually and exports to 53 countries worldwide
Marlenka also makes high-quality decorated cakes and custom cakes
including one made for Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday
and a birthday cake for the Czech presidential couple
A motorcycle-shaped cake was made for Petr Pavel
and a black cat-shaped cake for the First Lady
the company bought the former Lemberger textile factory in Frýdek-Místek
which it plans to preserve and renovate to expand its production capacity
This must be operational within three years to meet the growing demand
A Marlenka museum and a stylish café will be established on the site
and the surrounding land will be revitalized
the company also received significant awards
including first place in the Firm of the Year 2023 in the Moravian-Silesian Region and the Most Economically Successful Company of the Year 2023 in the Moravian-Silesian Region
for his contributions to the state in the economic field
the company's distribution warehouse is preparing the first nine pallets of Marlenka cakes
which are expected to arrive in Armenia at the beginning of May
The first products will be available in Armenia in May
The collaboration between Marlenka and the Armenian distributor was established with the active assistance of the Czech Embassy in Yerevan
which co-organized a mission of Armenian entrepreneurs from the Mantashyan Business Club to the Czech Republic at the end of February this year
during which the supply of Marlenka honey cakes to Armenia was arranged
The story of an Armenian native and prominent Czech entrepreneur thus symbolically enters a new phase
