Two women were fatally stabbed in a knife attack at a store in Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic on Thursday morning, authorities said.
Czech police have detained a 16-year-old Czech national in connection with the attack, which occurred in a shopping area on Akademika Bedrny Street, Czech News Agency reported.
"We caught up with the suspect about 10 minutes later, less than a kilometer from the crime scene. He was detained by the response unit," a police spokesperson told reporters at the scene.
The attack took place around 8:30 am local time.
According to police, the assailant stabbed one victim inside the store and another at the back of the premises. Emergency services responded swiftly, but both victims succumbed to their injuries despite efforts to revive them.
"Unfortunately, due to the extent of the injuries, the two seriously injured people could not be saved despite all our efforts," said Lucie Hanusova, a spokeswoman for the regional medical rescue service.
Authorities initially reported two injuries, including one serious case, before confirming that both victims had died. Their identities have not been released.
The National Center for Combating Terrorism, Extremism, and Cybercrime has joined the investigation. Police have not confirmed media reports suggesting the attack was random or that the victims included a store employee and a customer.
"There is no further danger," the police said.

River levels have been rising since Friday evening and the situation is getting worse as the rain continues
the Central Flood Commission called on the governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region to declare a state of emergency
The situation is also still serious in the Jeseniky area of Olomouc and the Frydlant area of Liberec
but there are problems in several other regions as well
Trains are not running on dozens of lines across the country since this morning due to extreme weather – some because of fallen trees
Railway managers are trying to get the lines back up and running as soon as possible
but heavy rain and strong winds have continued to complicate the situation since the morning
“The extreme weather is complicating rail traffic
The railway administration is working intensively to remove obstacles
and at the moment traffic is stopped on several dozen lines
We advise passengers to postpone their weekend journey unless absolutely necessary,” CD said
Railway firefighters intervened in 28 incidents from Friday evening until 6am this morning
mostly in the Liberec and Hradec Kralove regions
a spokesman for the Railway Administration’s firefighters
told reporters that the service was preparing for a demanding weekend
more than 60,000 households in the Czech Republic were left without electricity this morning due to extreme rain and wind
CEZ spokeswoman Sona Holingerova and E.ON spokesman Roman Spernak told journalists
CEZ said the most failures (more than 20,000) were in the Usti nad Labem Region
while over 13,000 were without power in the Liberec and Hradec Kralove regions
Several thousand households were also without power in the Central Bohemia and Karlovy Vary Regions
it is calmer in Moravia,” Holingerova said
Several rivers in the Moravia-Silesia Region reached extreme flood threat this afternoon
including the Opava river at Karlovice and the Cerna Opava river in Mnichov
according to data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMU)
the situation improved and the level dropped slightly
Severely raised water levels are expected to make their way to South Moravia by tomorrow
where preparations are underway to mitigate the damage
Around 180 patients were evacuated from the Hospital of the Merciful Brothers in Brno
as water rising through the sewer system put technical facilities at risk
including the hospital’s alternative power sources
“Even though the hospital probably won’t be flooded
technical facilities and alternative sources of electricity through the lower sewer
the hospital would not be able to function
which is why we are evacuating it to be safe,” said South Moravian Governor Jan Grolich
mainly to the Brno faculty hospitals in Bohunice and St
Today we are continuing mainly with follow-up care patients
We will transport them to hospitals in Blansko
Hustopeče and Boskovice,” said Pavel Piler

What do we really mean when we talk about the “student experience”
working hard and achieving qualifications form the core purpose of going to university
University is a place for making lifelong friends – whether in classes themselves
Young people thrown together by pure chance often end up forming deep connections that will last the rest of their lives
creating facilities that set high standards for the Czech higher education sector
the university is becoming an increasingly attractive location for foreign students seeking connections and comfort in their new Czech community
they’ll find a friendly community of foreign students navigating their way through studies in Czechia side-by-side
especially if you’re a foreign student.” She adds that “dormitories are good places to meet other students; quite quickly
a feeling of solidarity emerges among foreign students.”
Fellow student Luana Cunha agrees: “If you are willing to meet new people and make connections
You’ll be placed with roommates with whom you can share experiences and cultural backgrounds – students from the same region are usually put together
so you can meet and connect with people from all over the world.” This
does much to enhance students' “cultural sensitivity”
The dorms already get glowing reviews from students
The university has committed to further major developments
including an outdoor sports field and surrounding amenities
students perceive the social impact and personal development of sharing mutual academic and life experiences with their roommates very positively
these roommates become lifelong friends or partners.”
Bursar Klicnar adds that “over the past six years
the university has invested CZK 50 million in the renovation of the dormitories
The planned redevelopment of the sports field and adjacent areas will cost us an additional CZK 80 million.”
The dorms provide full-time student accommodation
as well as hotel-style options for students needing one-off or irregular accommodation
UHK student Linda Luna Aldana Teran describes the Palach dorms as “a meeting point for Czech and international students
UHK welcomes hundreds of international students every semester
“If you’re accommodated there for a long time
you become close to your roommates and get to learn about them and their culture
There are lots of opportunities to meet other students throughout the dorm
It’s a sociable environment; Linda adds that students “like to organize gatherings in their flats
This is one of the aspects I liked most about being there
and something you wouldn’t get to experience if you’re a student living outside the dorms.”
Rooms are typically shared with one or two other students and are described as “spacious” by Linda
Students praise the appearance and cleanliness of the dorms post-renovation – Luana describes them as “really comfortable and a place I could call home after just a few weeks.” While living check-by-jowl with other students “doesn’t provide much privacy or alone time
this is something you can adapt to over time,” she says
Continuous investment into the dorms is key to creating numerous opportunities to study and work on individual pursuits
Such spaces help unlock the academic success which students strive to achieve
“The quality and cost of housing provided at university dormitories is a deciding factor when choosing a university
students assess aspects such as the comfort and modern design of accommodation
proximity to the city center and to the university
and financial and time savings compared to renting or commuting from home,” explains Bursar Klicnar
Studying here saves students tens of thousands of crowns per year compared to dorms at other universities
“The quality of housing has a significant impact on overall satisfaction and academic success,” Bursar Klicnar concludes
It’s clear that forthcoming developments at UHK’s Palach dorms will only boost the university’s popularity among foreign and Czech students alike

Czech police near a police cordon in front of an Action discount shop in Hradec Kralove
where in the morning a teenager killed two women in a knife attack
A 16-year-old boy has killed two women in a knife attack at a discount shop in the Czech Republic with police saying the motive remained unclear
Police arrested the teenager, a Czech national, 10 minutes after Thursday’s attack at an Action branch on the outskirts of Hradec Kralove, about 100km east of Prague
“Both of those attacked suffered injuries which were so serious that they could not be saved despite all efforts of the rescuers,” police said on X
Police spokeswoman Iva Kormosova said the teenager
attacked a shop assistant and a service area worker
The attacker’s motive was unclear but that there was nothing to indicate a terror attack
“The information we have for now seems to suggest he chose the victims randomly,” they added
Police said later on Thursday they had charged the attacker with double murder
He is facing up to 10 years in prison if convicted
Rescuers received the first call about 7.30am GMT
we found two people stabbed,” Anatolij Truhlar
head doctor of the local air rescue service
told the private CNN Prima News TV channel
despite 40 minutes of resuscitation efforts
Witnesses told the public Czech TV there were about a dozen people inside the shop when the attacker hit
Police found a knife with a 20cm blade near the shop
The attacker was detained by a specialised police unit about 1km from the shop
Police were deployed outside the store where a lone candle flickered
and part of an adjacent carpark was closed with police tape until Thursday afternoon

Attacks in public are rare in the Czech Republic

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic’s southern neighbour Austria is reeling from the murder of a teenager in a knife attack by a Syrian asylum seeker in the city of Villach at the weekend
And eastern neighbour Slovakia was rocked by a double murder at a school where an 18-year-old student killed his fellow student and a deputy headmistress in another knife attack in January

the annual nationwide traffic safety event called Speed Marathon will start
the Czech Police will send hundreds of patrols to the streets
focusing exclusively on speeding - not only on main roads
but especially where citizens themselves most often complain about unruly drivers
Speed Marathon has been taking place in the Czech Republic for several years and its goal is one thing - to draw attention to the problem of excessive speed
which is one of the most common causes of traffic accidents
the police will not only stand at "traditional" places such as highways and expressways
pedestrian crossings or places with an increased number of accidents
Although the Speed Marathon does not hide where it will be held
this does not mean that it is just "theater"
The police mainly want to remind you that following the speed limit is not a matter of chance
keep your foot on the gas lighter than usual
but mainly for the safety of you and others
And who knows - maybe this day will remind you that driving according to the rules is not so difficult after all

Holy Spirit Cathedral in the Diocese of Hradec Králové
The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit is the principal church of the Diocese of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic
The Cathedral was probably founded by Queen Elizabeth Rejčka in 1308
the interior of the Cathedral reflected the influence of the second wife of Wenceslaus IV
the Cathedral was burnt down several times but was constantly renovated
it is the only surviving medieval Gothic church in this area
The Cathedral also features characteristic brick architecture
a rarity among Gothic cathedrals in Czech lands
The uniqueness here is the contrast between red brick and white sandstone used on portals
and a late Gothic altar in the South aisle
The ceiling of the Cathedral is decorated with painted coats of arms of the diocesan bishops
The rich church decoration and the diversity of its styles are a testimony of the intersection between cultural influences and local devotion throughout centuries of Christian history in Europe

se letos bude rozšiřovat na dvou úsecích; souběžně s nově zahájenou etapou bude i nadále pokračovat budování sousední části nové dálnice z Časů do Ostrova
