This year’s edition of the Anifilm International Festival of Animated Films
set to take place in Liberec from May 6 to 11
will spotlight science fiction for the first time in the festival’s 24-year history
Alongside its established international competition
the event will also offer a wide-ranging look at both Czech and global animation
The main competition will present works in eight categories
ranging from feature-length films to student projects
Czech animation is well-represented across the board: Kristina Dufková’s puppet-animated feature Living Large (Život k sežrání) will compete in the children and youth category
and Anastasiia Falileieva’s I Died in Irpin are among the Czech short films vying for awards
Anifilm winners in the short film categories will become eligible to compete for 2026 Academy Awards
Czech student works are also present in record numbers
with five films selected for the international student competition
a broad selection of recent domestic work will be featured in the Czech Horizon section
which spans five categories and will be judged by the Czech Animation Council
This year’s thematic focus on science fiction will cut across the program
Classic sci-fi animated films like René Laloux’s Fantastic Planet (animated in Czechoslovakia)
and Time Masters will screen alongside Mamoru Oshii’s anime landmark Ghost in the Shell
and lesser-known genre gems from Eastern Europe and the U.S
The sci-fi retrospective will also explore the legacy of Czech sci-fi animators such as Václav Mergl and Jiří Trnka
and the series Scavengers Reign highlight how the genre continues to evolve
The science fiction theme also informs this year’s festival identity
and will be visible throughout the program
including the late-night Midnight Animation slot and the children’s section Animo
Among the notable international guests at this year’s Anifilm festival are Love
Death & Robots and Scavengers Reign collaborator Diego Polieri
and French film historian Xavier Kawa-Topor
The international feature competition includes two Oscar-winning directors: Australia’s Adam Elliot with Memoir of a Snail and France’s Michel Hazanavicius with The Most Precious of Cargoes
Also competing are Julian Glander’s Boys Go to Jupiter
and Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass from the Quay Brothers
In the children and youth category, Czech film Living Large will compete with titles like the Oscar-winning Flow by Gints Zilbalodis, Ghost Cat Anzu from the Japanese manga, Claude Barras’ Savages, and The Magical Adventures of Angelo by Vincent Paronnaud and Alexis Ducord.<a href="https://www.festival-cannes.com/en/2024/the-magical-adventures-of-angelo/"></a>

with competitions for independent and experimental games
Czech and Slovak productions are again in the spotlight
with the town square hosting open-air screenings each night

The company Librec is building Switzerland's first large recycling plant for electric car batteries in Biberist (canton of Solothurn)
A new hall has been built for this purpose on the site of a former paper factory
Librec plans to recycle 12,000 tonnes of electric car batteries per year in Biberist
so does the need to recycle electric car batteries
especially as the working conditions for mining the metals required for batteries are often unfavourable
Battery recycling therefore offers the opportunity to produce at least some new electric car batteries from reused materials and thus alleviate the problem somewhat
the company Librec is about to open the country&#8217;s largest recycling plant for electric car batteries
The company has built a new recycling hall on the site of a former paper factory in Biberist
The plant is due to go into operation at the end of October
the batteries are first completely discharged
connected to discharge technology and all remaining energy is sucked out of it,’ explains Jodok Reinhardt
The energy obtained in this way is to be used for the recycling plant and thus covers a third of the energy requirement
Librec wants to recycle batteries from all manufacturers

&#8220;Each battery is placed in a separate fire compartment

Recycling is due to start at the end of October
The maximum capacity per year is 12,000 tonnes of electric car batteries

The recovery rate is said to be 97 per cent

GoCritic! continues its partnership with the <a href="https://animationfestivalnetwork.eu/">Animation Festival Network</a> (AFN) with the second workshop at the <a href="https://www.anifilm.cz/en/">Anifilm International Festival of Animated Films</a> in Liberec
Up to six promising film journalists and critics will be selected, and their tutoring and accommodation expenses will be covered by the programme. The workshop will be tutored by film critic and GoCritic! head of studies Vladan Petković. The articles will be published on Cineuropa and <a href="https://www.zippyframes.com/">Zippy Frames</a>
Anifilm is the largest event dedicated to animation in the Czech Republic
technologies and animation techniques to a wide audience
There are seven International Competition categories and five Czech Horizon categories in the National Competition
Festival visitors can enjoy a vast non-competitive film programme
as well as an accompanying programme consisting of exhibitions
the festival offers an extensive industry programme focusing on animation
Anifilm takes place in Liberec, the capital of the North Bohemia region, a cultural university city with a rich historical past that is surrounded by beautiful mountains, easily accessible and one hour's drive from Prague. Text description provided by the architects. The main aim is to build new multifunctional centre of Vlasta Burian. The building will serve as a social and cultural centre of the former <a href="https://www.archdaily.com/tag/liberec">Liberec</a> native Vlasta Burian, presentation of his life and lifestyle through lectures, leisure activities, courses, creative workshops etc. The building should increase attractiveness of adjacent old town.
Plot is located in a historical part of the town, near the city centre. This object completes the free vacant lot, trying to complete a city district that is damaged by time interventions and inaction of real estate owners and developers.
House respects the scale, volume, street line, architectural typology, morphology, rhythm of surrounding buildings.

Hipped roof is a result of analyse for the optimal roof volume from the insolation of the neighbouring house point view. Floor plan copies the limits of the plot.
Scheme</a>Colour and material uniformity of the external skin including roof and facade is reached by the slate tiles. The main architectural principle of the exterior material should be naturalness, truthfulness. Rhythm of the windows is symmetrical, and respects the surrounding apartment buildings articulation.
The proposed building has four floors, no basement.

On the ground floor level is located entrance hall, staff room and toilets. The visitors of the centre continue to the upper floors when they can find the common rooms for leisure time activities, exhibitions, projection, etc.

Phil De Fries is set to face the man who gave him one of his worst nights in the cage as he prepares to face Todd Duffee at KSW 79
De Fries and Duffee first fought at UFC 155 in December 2012
with the heavy-handed American&#8217;s punch power proving decisive as he handed De Fries one of the most crushing defeats of his career with a first-round knockout at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas
The Englishman went on to suffer another first-round stoppage in his next fight at the hands of Matt Mitrione
After a patchy run of form following his UFC exit
De Fries eventually signed with KSW in 2018 and has gone unbeaten ever since
But now De Fries is set to face Duffee once again
with the American signing to KSW and immediately stepping into a title fight with De Fries
Once considered a potential UFC heavyweight contender of the future
Duffee never quite established himself with a lengthy run in the Octagon
with injuries plaguing his time with the promotion
He eventually called time on his career with a career record of 9-3 (1 no contest)
Duffee was a powerful presence in the UFC&#8217;s heavyweight division
and his seven-second knockout of Tim Hague at UFC 102 remains one of the fastest KOs in UFC history
He also finished Neil Grove and Anthony Hamilton in 34 and 33 seconds
His win over De Fries was the longest victorious bout of his UFC career
But the Sunderland man will be looking to turn the tables on the powerful American
who is coming out of retirement to fight for the first time since a September 2019 no contest with Jeff Hughes at UFC on ESPN+ 16
Duffee has appeared in feature movies &#8220;Batman vs
Superman&#8221; and the &#8220;Never Back Down&#8221; franchise
but has also been in training ahead of a comeback
where he&#8217;ll look to claim his second win over De Fries and capture the KSW heavyweight title in the process

and Ricardo Prasel as he cemented his status as the most dominant champion in promotional history
Now the Englishman is set to return for the eighth defense of his title against an opponent to be confirmed
Also booked for the card is Czech veteran Viktor Pesta
who is moving back up to heavyweight and will hope to make a run at De Fries’ heavyweight crown
The card will also feature former Glory heavyweight kickboxer Arek Wrzosek
The promotion’s trip to the Czech Republic represents their first international event since 2019
and marks the first of a number of international shows as KSW continues to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic
