Brewing in Czechia is steeped in tradition
but there are corners exploring modern craft styles in a very Czech way
talk through their approach to classic styles with modern flair as well as modern styles with a local touch
It’s easy for New World brewers to lump Czech beer into the “historical” category
but—while many prominent brewers there focus intently on the lagers we all love—a growing contingent are also tackling evolving styles such as hazy IPA
and more—and they’re often doing it in their own ways
In Louny, a historic town about 40 miles northwest of Prague, Pivovar Zichovec is just such a brewery
but they’re not locked solely into traditional styles
and they’ve been exploring just how far they can go in making trendier styles such as hazy IPA
including this take from Huml: “When you’re doing a triple decoction and you don’t have [a direct-fired kettle]

The new proposals would not mean an end to funding for fossil fuels, but would represent a departure from previous regulations. Under these rules, the bank has provided sizeable financial support for coal-fired power stations in the developing world in spite of protests from governments and green groups
only the very poorest countries would be eligible to receive grants or loans for building new coal-fired power stations
and then only if they could prove they were necessary and that alternatives – such as renewable energy – were not feasible
An entirely new energy strategy is being written by the development bank
in part because of concerns that its current funding practices favour fossil fuel power
emphasise the potential of renewable sources of energy
But the proposals were criticised by campaigners as inadequate. "The draft strategy is disappointing. It looks as though the World Bank is trying to greenwash its activities while by and large continuing with dirty business as usual," said Alison Doig
senior adviser on climate change at the charity Christian Aid
"While it proposes a ban on coal lending to middle-income countries
the bank will continue its fossil fuel investments in the poorest countries
this means that the bank could still end up spending more than ever on fossil fuels
because it intends to keep backing such dirty projects in the poorest countries."
She added: "The draft strategy eloquently describes the plight of the more than 2 billion people who live in energy poverty
cooking on smoky open fires and with no electric lighting and no power for their small businesses
But it is worryingly vague about how it will tackle this and the target is woefully short on ambition - it would reach less than 2% of people who currently do not have electricity in their homes."
The World Bank's record on funding fossil fuels has long been a target of green campaigners. Last year, for instance, the World Bank was attacked for its controversial decision to grant nearly $4bn (£2.5bn) to the South African company Eskom to build what would be one of the world's largest coal-fired power stations
The bank spent £3.4bn – one-quarter of all its spending on energy projects – on coal-fired power in developing countries in the year to June 2010
That was 40 times more than the sum spent five years previously
has frequently spoken out in public about the need to realign the institution's funding criteria with its climate change goals
The World Bank is also one of the world's biggest funders of low-carbon energy generation
but critics complain that there has been a lack of a coherent
institution-wide strategy on energy funding to date
The bank has also been attacked for its attempts to take over the international funding of climate change projects. Under the 2009 Copenhagen accord
the bank could be charged with dispensing the billions of funding that rich countries are due to send to poor countries
in order to help them cope with the effects of climate change and cut greenhouse gas emissions
Doig said: "The World Bank seems to think it can manage the world's new climate funds while continuing to bankroll high-carbon development
credible strategy to promote thriving green economies which help developing countries to adopt technologies fit for the 21st century."
The new proposals are likely to take months to be accepted
gained an international reputation with his computer-generated compositions
produced in the relatively liberal environment of Czechoslovakia in the 1960s
He continued to work in both figurative and abstract styles after the Prague Spring of 1968
and in recent years his contribution has been acknowledged anew outside his own country
which played a dominant role in his life even while he was immersed in the cultural life of Prague
Although his education was interrupted by the German occupation and the onset of the second world war
in 1945 he became a student at the art education department of Charles University
2003 Photograph: www.prague-art.czSykora's early work
hurtled in no particular order through the history of modern art
impressionism and post-impressionism to expressionism
Much of his painting was based on the varied
especially the river Ohre and the valleys beyond the village of Cítoliby
which appeared in his first individual exhibition at the Ales Hall in Prague (1952)
Seven years later his artistic development was accelerated by his encounter with Henri Matisse's pictures at the Hermitage in Leningrad
The resulting transition from naturalism to abstraction can be seen most clearly in the remarkable Gardens series
which culminated in the high stylisation of Garden/Composition (1961)
During this era of thriving avant-garde activity
Sykora was at the heart of Krizovatka (Crossroads)
a disparate group of artists who gravitated around the poet and painter Jiri Kolar at the Slavia Cafe in Prague
consisting of black-and-white geometric forms
included his celebrated Structure paintings
as well as a fire-curtain in Louny theatre (1963) that only survives as a photograph hanging in the foyer
A year later his collaboration with the mathematician Jaroslav Blazek led to his first computer-assisted works
which explored different combinations of abstract elements in accordance with predetermined rules
While they have a passing similarity to Op art in western Europe and America
their rigorous mathematical method was unique to Sykora
Such striking innovation attracted international attention
leading in 1965 to Sykora's participation in an exhibition in Genoa
followed by other group shows in Germany and Yugoslavia
in which he was also appointed an associate professor at Charles University
culminated in some major decorative projects in Prague during the late 1960s
the glass tile exteriors of the towering ventilation flues above the Letná road tunnel
Political repression in Czechoslovakia during the 1970s did not hinder Sykora's experimentation
although he also returned to producing landscape pictures of his native region
as well as images of the Baltic island of Rügen in East Germany
he developed an idiom characterised by dense clusters of interwoven
which combined mathematical systems with a quality of randomness
reflected a quasi-scientific understanding of reality
As Sykora himself said: "The more I wish my paintings to be just what they are
reflected in such monumental pieces as Lines No 24
The Last Judgement (1983-84) as well as in collaborations with his wife Lenka
he received considerable exposure both at home and abroad
celebrating a century of the avant garde in central and eastern Europe
before becoming the subject of Jaroslav Brabec's hour-long documentary film for a Europeans series on Czech television (2001)
In this final period Sy´kora also produced some ambitious linear designs for architectural spaces
including the entrance hall of the new air traffic control centre in Jenec
completed a career of considerable rigour and integrity

A few weeks ago, we wrote about a new Christmas-themed Milka advert that was shot by Amélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet in the Czech Republic – specifically
it turns out that Milka wasn’t the only brand to visit the locale for filming a Christmas 2016 advertisement
For one of their global Christmas campaigns currently being rolled out in Europe
Coca-Cola also shot an advert in three locations withinin the Czech Republic
The advert, produced by Spanish ad agency Sra. Rushmore
features a familiar Christmastime theme as a young boy brightens holiday spirit with… well
which enhanced the majesty of Loket with a CGI Alpine backdrop
the Coke ad downplays the shooting locations outside of a brief establishing shot:
If you’re familiar with some of the Czech Republic’s more idyllic locales
you’ll instantly recognize the opening frames as the town of Loket
But what about that American-looking suburb
Yup: filmed in Prague’s own “Little America”
Additional scenes on Christmas village-like town streets were shot in Louny
Alternate versions of the advert catering to different markets can be found on Coca-Cola’s official YouTube channel

2019 • 14:00The new director of the Louny wagon works Vojtěch Vagner tells us that there is a hope to have a healthy company with a billion turnover within a year
the prospects looked pale: hundreds of people were left unpaid
and the police had to disperse the feuding parties with warning shots as they fought against each other with a machete in hand
the traditional Czech wagon works was rented from the liquidator by a group belonging to the holding of the arms manufacturer Jaroslav Strnad
The company led by DAKO-CZ and the new boss managed to resume production and give people the pay
Although you started as a new boss a few weeks ago
your personal history related to the company for quite some time..
I worked here for four years in the past
and over the time grew to the position of a procurement and logistics manager
the first thing I dealt with was to buy toilet paper
Then I assumed the position of a head of the sales department
but when I realized what difficulties the company was running into
What made you take the offer to come back and take over the factory in a situation that was definitely not roseate
The fact that I really like the factory
For me it's a matter of the heart
Perhaps it is not entirely right to take it so personally
but I wanted the people who have been working here for years to keep their jobs
These are not employees who come through labour agencies or spend a couple of months here and then go on somewhere where they are offered five hundred crowns more
Whole generations and whole families work here
What have you achieved in those few weeks in office
I noticed a poster saying that since the 2nd of September the canteen has been running again
to provide for that was almost the most important thing to do
Perhaps in addition to the pay the employees receive again
The important thing is that we managed to stabilize the factory and calm the employees
people were very scared of what was happening here
whether it was night shooting or the fact that there was a fight with machetes
Then they stood in front of the closed premises and could not enter
attempts were made by the former tenant to enter the premises and barricade themselves in the building
No wonder everyone perceived it very badly
I will come to work tomorrow and there will be someone with an axe
My main objective was to win back as many of the former employees as possible and give them jobs
these people have been working here for thirty years
and they want to stay for another ten years before they retire
everyone knows each other because Louny is a small town
We launched our recruitment campaign in early July
I do not even understand how it happened that in such a short time we took over almost 90 percent of employees of the former company
as it was very difficult for recruiters in such a chaotic situation
they didn't even hand over any documentation to you
so it wasn't clear how many people and in what positions they worked in
We signed the lease of the company in the second week of July and for the next two weeks we were frantically trying to get at least some of the staff documentation
I understand that the former tenant did not want to give us things needed for production or accounting
But not having any of the staff documents is bad
but you have to bring your original contract
your salary assessment or at least the payslip
let us know that you were really employed here
do the employees receive the remuneration regularly
as we paid out only an advance during the holiday season due to the lacking HR documentation
I believe the following fact contributed significantly to the trust of the people that the wagon works would rise from ashes and that they would receive their pay regularly
and the reason is the following: we are connected with Tatravagonka Poprad
which is together with the CSG the owner of DAKO-CZ
there is a strong financial group behind our back
that is why people were not afraid they would lose money and came to work here again
They believed we would build on the history and tradition of a good business
you can't even tell how many people worked here then
about ninety percent of those who worked here before
I do not include agency employees; there were about two hundred of them working here previously
We plan to employ approximately 150 of them by the end of the year
Did you take over anything from the previous company
I assume you have your own production program
We couldn't take over the work in progress because those things were processed according to the Legios Loco certification
We didn't even have a legal right to do it
We were very careful to do anything about things that belonged to another company
and the liquidator withheld as she had the lien
whether they were items related to production or inventory
Thanks to our partner wagon works in Slovakia
They had contracted many orders and did not have the capacity to produce
we began repairing freight cars for the Czech customer
Now we are about to hand over the fortieth car
the repairs are running; as for the production of new railway cars
And we will be at a hundred percent utilization of production capacities in about a month
About 40 finished cars and about a hundred in progress
We did not take over a functioning factory
so this year we will naturally finish in the red
This is also due to the fact that you first have to have the parts: the preparation process takes a month and a half
To manufacture a car takes the same time and invoicing takes another month
for four and a half months you have only generated a negative result
We already have three times more demand than we can satisfy next year
It seems logical since you are one of only three similar businesses in Europe
we feel the demand from the market already
Tatravagonka Poprad is the largest in Europe in this type of business
and yet it is not able to satisfy all customers
That means we definitely plan to expand our production capacity so that our two companies can meet the demand
Do you have any plans to expand your production portfolio
We will focus only on what we already know and can do
What will be the financial situation of your company next year
Our plan is to get into the black next year
I sing point at the turn of August and September exactly
we should finish in the black by a few millions
our goal is to have a billion turnover every year
which means a profitability of about a hundred million a year
as the margin in this business is about 10 percent
And do you plan to make some other investments next year in addition to increasing your production capacity
I spoke in person to at least a hundred people
And I told everyone what we wanted to achieve and asked everyone what they needed and wanted to change or improve
I remember all of that to such an extent that if my wife wakes me up at night
as long as we are only tenants of the premises
making investments can be a bit of a problem
I expected that workers would be unhappy with the cranes and other machines and would ask for robotic or automated lines and new technologies to make their work easier
the rough roads made of concrete blocks are really bad
and the volume of internal transport is high
but there is an issue: it is quite difficult to calculate the return of such an investment..

Jan Hus (1369/1370–1415) was an eminent medieval church reformer who paid for his convictions with his life
He was born around 1370 in a poor family in Husinec near Prachatice
Since 1390 he studied at Charles University in Prague and in 1409 he became rector of the university
Influenced by the English reformer John Wycliffe
Hus became a sharp critic of the moral failings of the Roman Catholic Church
His Czech language sermons at the Bethlehem Chapel attracted thousands of listeners
he had to account for his critical attitude toward the church at the Council of Constance
Despite assurances of safe passage
Hus was imprisoned after his arrival to Constance
Because he refused to retract his teachings
After his death the Hussite Wars broke out
in which Hus‘ followers attempted to break free from the Catholic Church
In the 19th and 20th century he became a symbol of the Czech National Revival
Everybody is most cordially invited to attend the opening on Friday

A WOMAN has spoken of her hellish three month ordeal of being kidnapped
and forced to drink from a dog bowl after a desperate early morning escape
The unnamed 27-year-old was allegedly snatched and tortured by a sick and twisted truck driver Karel N. from Sirem in the northwest of the Czech Republic
After fleeing the house of horrors around 3 am on February 16, the woman, who had a chain around her neck, begged neighbours for help before recounting the Fritzl-like hell she had endured
The woman was allegedly kept in the basement of the Sirem house for over three months where she was chained up and held in filthy conditions and forced to drink from a dog bowl
The resident who answered the door to the woman told Czech news outlet Idnes: "I was woken up by the doorbell at three in the morning.
"I looked out the window and there was a young woman standing there.
"I was terribly scared, she looked miserable."
"She was wearing leggings and a hoodie pulled over her head.
"She had a chain wrapped around her neck. She was moaning that she had been trapped in the basement since November and was begging for help.
"I woke my husband up and we took her inside. I locked everything, I was afraid someone was following her."
"She said he shaved her head and rarely gave her anything to eat
just sometimes a little bread and water from a bowl
raped her and did other crazy things to her."
One resident said that she looked like someone who had escaped a concentration camp
The woman told her neighbours how she managed to escape using the chain that had held her hostage on a bed
"She [said she] was tied to a heavy bed," a neighbour said
"She managed to pull the chain out and use it to climb out of the window."
Her abuser was not home when she managed her escape
they helped remove the chain from her neck and phoned the emergency services
Her ordeal appears to echo that of Elisabeth Fritzl who was abused by her evil father Josef for years in his cellar in Austria
Karel N has since been arrested and reportedly knew the victim
Locals have described the truck driver as "sociable" though he was often away due to his job
but local media have brought his dark past to light
He has reportedly been known to police after luring a 22-year-old woman to his home in Kryry
The monster allegedly promised she would get a job after she became unemployed and put a dog head mask on her
used chains to hand her up and tie her limbs together
It is claimed that a female accomplice helped Karel with these crimes
Hana Bachova, the president of the Louny District Court, told local outlet CNN Prima News: "She was then held in a torturous manner
one could even say tortured in various ways
"There was also a certain form of sexual intercourse."
the woman managed to escape which saw Karel jailed for three years for rape and deprivation of liberty
an appeal saw him released early on probation in 2022
the judge ruled that the three-year sentence was harsh as Karel vowed that he would never do anything so depraved again
He is now behind bars as he awaits trial for the alleged crimes committed against the second woman
Prosecutors spoke out about the rejection of bail
saying: "He is a person who often travels outside the Czech Republic
so the reason for his detention was found to be a fugitive
not all witnesses were heard and there is a risk that he could influence their statements and also repeat his criminal activity."
THE twisted dad asks his daughter Elisabeth to help him install a door in his cellar in 1984
She agreed and moments later she is drugged with an ether-soaked towel
She would spend the next 24 years locked up in the hellish prison in Amstetten
Evil Fritzl went on to rape her over 3,000 times in rat-infested bunker
He would beat and kick her and force her into degrading acts - including re-enacting scenes from violent porn films
Elisabeth gave birth to seven babies in the cellar with no medical care
Stefan (1990) and Felix (2002) were left to live with their mum in the underground hellhole
(born 1992) Monica (1994) and Alexander (1996) - were raised upstairs
by Fritzl and his wife Rosemarie after he convinced her they were left on the doorstep by Elisabeth
Alexander's twin Michael died shortly after birth with cruel Fritzl tossing his body in an incinerator
The family's nightmare sees Fritzl threatening them if they dare to escape and punishing them by switching off the electricity
Their nightmare comes to an end when Kerstin fell critically ill in 2008
Fritzl allowed Elisabeth to take her to the hospital where she revealed the shocking horrors she had suffered
Despite trying to argue he was trying to be a protective father, Fritzl was sentenced to life in prison in 2009
