The Mondelēz factory in Mariánské Lázně isn’t just a place where delicious wafers are made — it’s a place where dedicated
passionate women come together to create something magical every day
there are special places like the factory in Mariánské Lázně
this factory employs 70 people who produce the traditional Kolonáda spa wafers on two production lines
Let's get to know some of these incredible women
Vlaďka has been with Mondelēz for 16 years
and has led the quality department for the past 13 years
"I still have room to grow in this position," Vlaďka says
highlighting the ever-increasing demands for food safety
Sylva has been part of the Mariánské Lázně team for an incredible 43 years
She began as a planner and has been the HR manager since 1993
Sylva’s role involves everything from meeting colleagues and ensuring safety and quality to managing work clothes and supplies
“I try to find time for everyone who comes to me
satisfaction is a smiling and well-adjusted employee.” Although Sylva is retiring this May
she will always be a cherished part of the team
Radka joined Mondelēz straight out of school
starting in an administrative role supporting production and quality
she has become the logistics and warehouse manager for the external warehouse
I learned the importance of every link in the production process
It doesn’t matter if you’re a manager or a cleaning worker." Radka’s day is filled with monitoring stock levels
and coordinating with suppliers and colleagues across departments
She thrives on the variety and the daily challenges
which are made manageable by the support of her team
Denisa is the youngest member of the factory's management
having joined two years ago from a different industry
She started as administrative support for quality and production
giving her a comprehensive understanding of the plant’s operations
she became the Administrative Coordinator and will fully take over the HR responsibilities from her mother
Denisa loves the close contact with her colleagues and the ever-changing nature of her job
we asked these remarkable women what they were most excited about
They all shared the same anticipation: the completion of a major project to launch a new automatic line for sintering hazelnut wafers
Vlaďka: "We’ve been working on partially automating one of our two lines for over nine months
It’s the biggest project I’ve seen in my 16 years here
I can’t wait to see it successfully completed
I’m really looking forward to a holiday with my family
who have been a great support to me."
while Sylva is looking forward to retirement: "But I won’t be idle
and supporting hockey and handball matches
And I’ll always remember my beloved Kolonáda."
The Mondelēz factory in Mariánské Lázně isn’t just a place where delicious wafers are made—it’s a place where dedicated

leading to the emergence of grand international resorts that impacted urban typology around ensembles of spa buildings such as baths
kurhaus and kursaal (buildings and rooms dedicated to therapy)
colonnades and galleries designed to harness the natural mineral water resources and to allow their practical use for bathing and drinking
as well as spa-specific support infrastructure
These ensembles are all integrated into an overall urban context that includes a carefully managed recreational and therapeutic environment in a picturesque landscape

Baden-Baden y Bad Kissingen (Alemania); Montecatini Terme (Italia) y City of Bath (Reino Unido)

The Great Spas of Europe bear an exceptional testimony to the European spa phenomenon
which gained its highest expression from around 1700 to the 1930s
This transnational serial property comprises eleven spa towns located in seven countries: Baden bei Wien (Austria); Spa (Belgium); Karlovy Vary
Františkovy Lázně and Mariánské Lázně (Czechia); Vichy (France); Bad Ems
Baden-Baden and Bad Kissingen (Germany); Montecatini Terme (Italy); and City of Bath (United Kingdom)
dynamic and international spa towns among the many hundreds that contributed to the European spa phenomenon
all the towns developed around mineral water sources
which were the catalyst for a model of spatial organisation dedicated to curative
treatment facilities and colonnades designed to harness the water resources and to allow its practical use for bathing and drinking
was complemented by exercise and social activities requiring visitor facilities such as assembly rooms
villas and related infrastructures (from water piping systems and salts production to railways and funiculars)
All are integrated into an overall urban context that includes a carefully managed recreational and therapeutic environment of parks
Buildings and spaces connect visually and physically with their surrounding landscapes
which are used regularly for exercise as a contribution to the therapy of the cure
Criterion (ii): The Great Spas of Europe exhibits an important interchange of innovative ideas that influenced the development of medicine
balneology and leisure activities from around 1700 to the 1930s
This interchange is tangibly expressed through an urban typology centred on natural mineral springs and devoted to health and leisure
Those ideas influenced the popularity and development of spa towns and balneology throughout Europe and in other parts of the world
The Great Spas of Europe became centres of experimentation which stayed abreast of their competitors by adapting to the changing tastes
sensitivities and requirements of visitors
the principal agents of transmission were the architects
designers and gardeners who created the built and ‘natural’ environments framing spa life
the property displays important examples of spa architecture such as the ‘kurhaus’ and ‘kursaal’
colonnades and galleries designed to harness the natural mineral water resource and to allow its practical use for bathing and drinking
Criterion (iii): The Great Spas of Europe bears exceptional testimony to the European spa phenomenon
but gained its highest expression from around 1700 to the 1930s
either externally (by bathing) or internally (by drinking
and inhaling) involved a highly structured and timed daily regime and a combination of medical aspects and leisure
including entertainment and social activities (e.g
dancing) as well as taking physical exercise within an outdoor therapeutic spa landscape
These parameters directly influenced the spatial layout of spa towns and the form and function of spa buildings or ‘spa architecture’
Urban parks and promenades allowed people taking the cure “to see and be seen” by others
The eleven component parts that comprise the serial property represent the most exceptional examples of European spa towns
All component parts share a set of determining characteristics formed during the most significant “culture-creating” phase of their history and development
the heyday period from around 1700 to the 1930s
Each and every one continues to function for the purpose for which it was originally developed
The series illustrates the main stages of the development of the spa phenomenon
starting with the most influential spa towns in the 18th century
to the development of model spa towns in the 19th century
to towns that are testimony to the last stages of the phenomenon in the early 20th century
Boundaries are determined in relation to the mapping of the attributes that convey Outstanding Universal Value
namely: the most important spa structures and buildings used for thermal-related activities; the social facilities and buildings for leisure and pleasure; accommodation facilities; related spa infrastructure; and the surrounding therapeutic and recreational spa landscape
Buffer zones are drawn both for the protection of spring catchments and important setting
All component parts and their constituent elements are generally in good condition
Elements requiring conservation either have works already planned
with their current state of conservation maintained
Upgrades and redevelopments made to keep pace with standards of services
can create tensions with their conservation as historic buildings
Challenges in the adaptive reuse and technical upgrading of industrial structures pose similar challenges
The property meets the conditions of authenticity in terms of form and design
All component parts express the Outstanding Universal Value of the property through a variety of common and highly authentic attributes: mineral springs
which maintain their natural physical qualities
location and setting; a distinct and highly legible spatial layout and a well-maintained location and setting that combine to retain an enduring spirit and feeling; spa architecture
even though some buildings have experienced change of use; the spa therapeutic landscape
and continues to be used for the purpose for which it was designed; spa infrastructure
much of which is either original or evolved on original principles and remains in use; continuing spa use and function despite the need to meet today’s standards
The veracity and credible expression of attributes embodied in structures that date from around 1700 to the 1930s
the principal period of contribution to Outstanding Universal Value
is further evidenced during substantial and sustained conservation works that are informed by expansive archival collections of plans
publications and photographs held at each component part
Responsibility for the protection and management of each of the eleven component parts of the property rests with the national/regional government (in the case of Germany
and local authorities of that State Party)
Each component is protected through legislation and spatial planning regulations applicable in its State Party or individual province
as well as by a significant degree of public/charitable ownership of key buildings and landscapes
Each component part has a property manager or coordinator and a Local Management Plan in place conforming to the overall Property Management Plan
An overall management system for the whole property has been established
with a Property Management Plan and Action Plan agreed by all stakeholders
made up of national World Heritage Focal Points and/or a representative of the highest monument or heritage protection authority
keeps track of matters relating to the property
made up of the Mayors of the eleven components
is responsible for the operational coordination and overall management of the property in close consultation with the Inter-Governmental Committee
The Board sets and manages the budget for the overall management functions
and directs other activities for the property as a whole
The Site Managers Group includes site managers for each component part
The Site Managers Group is essentially an expert group for debate and exchanges of experience and to advise the GSMB on relevant management issues
The international structure is supported and serviced by a Secretariat jointly funded by all the component parts
An important concern will be to continue to develop cooperation and collaboration between the individual component parts and to ensure that the property as a whole is effectively managed and the overall management system is adequately resourced
Development pressures may be an issue since these are living cities which will need to continue to adapt and change to maintain their role as spa towns
Managing tourism so that it is truly sustainable may also become a challenge
A management approach at the landscape level
which considers the relationship between each component part
and the broader setting is also needed to maintain views to

Marienbad had the misfortune of being held too close to Baden-Baden
Some of the stronger players were evidently too exhausted to take part
and Marienbad had the ragged feel of an after-party.
and then laid out in written form in My System
Marienbad was the chance to see Nimzowitsch’s approach on an international stage.
His play here does seem like chess from another dimension and is far more shocking than inoffensive ideas like prophylaxis and overprotection might suggest
The hoarding of potential in constricted positions
and apparent tergiversation in the formative parts of the game all seemed close to a mockery of classical chess.
stood for something like the extremes of abstract expressionism
Akiba Rubinstein was the ascendency of an almost vanishing minimalism — Donald Judd to Nimzowitsch’s Rauschenberg
At this point in his career Rubinstein seemed to be skipping not only the opening but also the middlegame
forgetting altogether such concepts as the initiative
and the attack and instead looking for minuscule levers by which he could win in the ending.
Marienbad was a near-perfect imitation of San Sebastián 1912
Nimzowitsch took revenge for his high-stakes loss to Rubinstein in that tournament by winning their individual match-up
but Rubinstein kept his head slightly better down the home stretch than the ever-excitable Nimzowitsch and caught him in the last round.
The tournament was also an important step in the development of the legend of Carlos Torre
It was the single-best placing of his short career — shared third place with Marshall
And it featured the game that he considered the best game he ever played — a convincing win over Fred Yates
It’s not entirely clear what Torre thought was so special about this game
which was impressive but not stunning in its fireworks
is the deep strategic play that went into his attack.
Something about Torre tended to produce hysterics in everyone around him
after his 13-move thrashing by Torre at Baden-Baden
had sworn to take revenge but instead was at the receiving end of another brilliancy
"A new genius has arisen in the world of chess."
I don't quite get it with the Yates game but the Gruenfeld game is a good chance to see what all the fuss was about
Torre seems to have a slightly different calculation from anybody else of the relative value of all the pieces
with a slightly greater emphasis on dynamism and mobility
and the possibility for a rook lift to the kingside
even though concrete compensation takes place only many moves after the pawn’s sacrifice.
Marshall was yesterday’s man by 1925 but in his first trip to Europe since before the war he finished in shared third and effortlessly uncorked this Morphyesque game against Haida
He recalled finding everything in Europe "different and sadder" than it had been.

England's King Edward VII was so fond of the spas in today's Czech Republic that he made nine visits around the turn of the last century
He stayed at the Nove Lazne (New Spa) hotel in Marianske Lazne (aka Marienbad)
Maybe his preference got a nudge because the resort installed the Royal Cabin as his exclusive treatment site
The property also created the similarly splendid Imperial Cabin for the Hapsburg emperor Franz Joseph I
guests at Nove Lazne or its affiliate properties can book a mineral-water soak in the English king's space
but clients don't have to be guests to arrange a tour of the royal facilities
I saw both "cabins" during sightseeing offered to visiting travel advisors and press in advance of CzechTourism's Travel Trade Day
an annual gathering aimed at boosting international arrivals that returned this year after Covid cancellations in 2020 and 2021
Travel writer Nadine Godwin was thrilled to return to the Grandhotel Pupp and to Karlovy Vary
more than 30 years since her initial stay at the riverside property
agents from 22 countries attended the event in Karlovy Vary
which is the capital of a Rhode Island-size Czech region of the same name
The city of Karlovy Vary (aka Carlsbad) along with the other two localities in the Czech "spa triangle" (the towns of Marianske Lazne and Frantiskovy Lazne) made the Unesco World Heritage list last year in recognition of their place in European spa culture
While the towns' mineral springs have been sought after for centuries
their visual appeal reflects a heyday -- late 19th/early 20th century -- when many colonnades
spa houses and hotels were built.Although some facilities are staffed for medical spa treatments these days
clients can opt for pampering with massages and mineral baths
As for the colonnades and pavilions in each town
they shelter taps offering mineral waters of varying compositions and temperatures
one must take the waters using a local invention
the porcelain sipping cup with a handle that doubles as a straw
Tourists traveling to and within the Czech Republic totaled about 22 million in 2019
The numbers were roughly half that in 2020 and 2021
said at a press conference in Karlovy Vary that domestic travel is now recovering
but international business remains severely curtailed because of Covid shutdowns in Asia and the loss of the Russian market due to the war in Ukraine
"We are hoping to find other possibilities."
Herget and his colleagues emphasized that the Karlovy Vary region's attractions aren't limited to spas
highlighting "mountains and amazing nature" as well as Czech cultural heritage
while trails for hiking and biking extend farther afield
There also are 10 golf courses in the area
But heritage was on the menu for our preconference tours
14th-century Becov castle-and-chateau complex in the picturesque town of Becov

• Another hilltop castle in an eponymous town
The castle's features range from the tower
Travel Trade Day guests experienced a medieval-themed banquet here
The town hosts its own events a few weekends each year

now a spa town but formerly a center of silver and
A look at two new hotels sharing a square in the Czech capital -- one that gives a nod to the past
looks at mining history plus the production of silver coins called "thalers" (this gave us the word "dollar")
As silver mines gushed wealth in the 16th century
the town assembled an astonishing collection of books that were hidden for safety in 1625
they are now displayed in the Latin Library at the town hall
• The Karlovy Vary region has about 12 breweries
including a small one on the town square in Loket
"Urquell" signifies this is where pilsner lagers originated
for two sites in Karlovy Vary itself: At the Becherovka Visitors Center
located where the Becherovka herbal liqueur was first made
tours are also generally topped off with a tasting
conclude with a visit to the small Moser museum -- and much larger showroom
The war in Ukraine initially produced a significant dip in U.S
Herget said the country is quickly assimilating refugees (among roughly 350,000
including many children; 55,000 of the refugees have jobs already)
Ukrainian flags fly on quite a few buildings
Herget said there is "no physical danger" to visit
adding that the Czech Republic remains "a good-quality destination at good prices."

The freight train, which was carrying limestone, derailed on Sunday between Chodova Plana and Marianske Lazne, Czech authorities said.
Limestone could be seen scattered around the derailed wagons.
A spokesman for the Czech Rail Safety Inspection said a total of 13 wagons derailed and that the damage to the train and rail track was estimated at 29 million Czech crowns, which equals $1.3 million.
An investigation into the cause of the accident was underway.
Authorities said preliminary findings suggested the train was traveling three times faster than the permitted speed limit on that section of track.

Long considered one of the pearls of the world-famous Czech spa circuit
Mariánské Lázně recently added a new distinction to its long list of therapeutic superpowers – climatic spa destination
confirms that the UNESCO World Heritage town’s dynamic bioclimate and air quality help to alleviate acute and chronic respiratory diseases
The Falkensteiner Spa Resort Marienbad
incorporates Mariánské Lázně’s many resources – mineral carbonated water from centuries-old springs
and muds) and now air quality – into its diverse therapies
There is no better time than fall than to take a time-out and concentrate on your wellbeing
And there is no better place to rejuvenate your immune system than at the Falkensteiner Spa Resort Marienbad
pampering and a fabulous culinary experience
One of the resort’s most popular fall treatment programs centers around respiratory therapy. The therapists at the Falkensteiner Spa Resort Marienbad combine expert knowledge of human anatomy and breathing techniques to help relieve respiratory problems
The therapies are also suitable for post-Covid rehabilitation.
The respiratory program offers 24 specially tailored treatments
and time in a “forest spa,” which increases the number of naturally regenerating cells and strengthens the immune system
helps to measurably lower blood pressure and heart rate and also contributes to relaxation
especially chronic problems with depression or anxiety
“It is important to understand that the ‘forest bath’ is not about physical exercise and cannot be done without proper guidance
in its original Japanese name Shinrin Yoku
is not a walk in the woods,” said Reinhard Wall
“It is a sequence of exercises designed for a small group but performed individually
The trainer must be certified and the part of the forest where it takes place must meet specific requirements
each participant can repeat the exercises afterwards somewhere else
The resort has an on-site medical center situated in a stunning Art Nouveau house
“These packages are aimed at an educated population that is actively engaged in healthy living,” said Wall
“They serve not only for therapeutic purposes
as well as for active health maintenance and early correction of negative habits,”
Falkensteiner Spa Resort Marienbad has a modern gym and a yoga area in the garden
which combine plated and buffet meals and are prepared according to healthy cuisine principles
The price is from EUR 279 per night per person

there is no better time to start planning a spring getaway to the crown jewel of the West Bohemian Spa Triangle
Mariánské Lázně provides a nice mix of historic splendor
Located where the first bath house was built in 1812, the four-star Centrální Lázně is the oldest spa complex in Mariánské Lázně

The four-star Hvězda Health Spa Hotel is an outstanding example of spa architecture in the center of the town’s Goethe Square

you will be treated with modern medical competence and the experience of almost 200 years of healing
The impressive exterior of the three-star Svoboda combines several different styles of a bygone era; its guest rooms offering sweeping forest panoramas
Medical consultation and treatment rooms are located in the Palladio Spa Centre
which was renovated in 2014 and uses water from the Josef and Forest springs for mineral baths and drinking cures
The three-star Vltava is a hidden gem when it comes to affordable and outstanding medical care
Situated on the edge of the lush forest above the town center
the hotel offers a wide range of health services
reliable service and lovely panoramic views
Mariánské Lázně has a storied history as a spa town
It was already welcoming names like Goethe
and King Edward VII to its healing springs two centuries ago
Some of those same treatments that helped to heal the monarchs and composers of yesterday are still used throughout the spas of this lesser-known gem of a town
What do you need to know before you book a stay to take advantage of the healing properties and treatments available here? MUDr. Markéta Hovorková, Ph.D., chief physician of Ensana Health Spa Hotels, Mariánské Lázně explained what to expect on your first visit to a Czech spa
For those who know nothing about the Czech spas
explain how the concept is different from what we might find in the West where spas focus on relaxation and beauty procedures
Medical treatment in Czech spas is significantly different from the concept of other spas in the West. Not only do we offer clients relaxation in our wellness centers but also real medical treatment via natural healing resources
This is all conducted completely under the supervision of specialists (physicians
and nurses) in an accredited medical facility
Do you have to have a chronic condition to benefit from such treatments
The effects of spa treatment are beneficial for everyone
They can adjust and restore physical and psychological strength
Subsequent non-pharmacological rehabilitation care is intended not only for patients with health problems (acute diseases
chronic diseases) but also for clients within preventive programs
I can say that we expect an improvement in the patient's condition after a spa treatment
Do you need a recommendation from your doctor
Patients whose spa stay is covered by an insurance company need treatment approval from a reviewing doctor
we are always happy to receive information about a patient’s health from their attending physician
you will have a consultation with a doctor who will prescribe an individual treatment plan
Depending on the development of your health condition
the doctor may adjust the prescribed treatment during your stay
the doctor will perform a final examination and give you recommendations regarding your lifestyle
Mariánské Lázně is famous for its natural resources
What kind of ailments have traditionally been treated here and how is it different from other Czech spa towns
Mariánské Lázně is unique in that it has a total of three natural healing springs
Maria's Gas for dry gas baths and injections
Mariánské Lázně has always belonged to the most important representatives of the treatment of chronic kidney diseases
A large group of our clients are also patients with diseases of the locomotor system
The number of clients with oncological diseases
and diseases caused by an unhealthy lifestyle has also been increasing
we will also undergo the final tests of measuring the quality of the air as part of our efforts to obtain the status of a climatic spa
This is a prestigious status that only a few spa towns have received
We would be unique with four natural healing sources
Have treatments been added in recent years that reflect a rise in burnout and other lifestyle issues
Modern medicine is increasingly focused on the prevention of chronic non-infectious diseases
These diseases arise as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle
Mariánské Lázně is also involved in the fight against the consequences of modern lifestyles
We have created a special preventive program for people with a high risk of cardiovascular disease
a consultation with a nutritional specialist
individual exercises with a physiotherapist
evaluation of the state of the cardiovascular system
our new modern rehabilitation method – Five Konzept
This unique method a form of active stretching that effectively helps
people with significant back pain caused by sedentary work
Have technological developments led to new spa procedures and treatments
Progress is moving forward at lightning speed
and even though we at Mariánské Lázně have not rested on our laurels
In addition to using our natural healing resources and physical therapy
we are always looking for new rehabilitation methods
the newest induction system – pulse magnetotherapy
which we use in the treatment of incontinence and chronic prostate diseases in addition to acute or chronic painful conditions
a modern laser helps patients with post-Covid syndrome
which significantly contributes to improving the function of lung tissue
we also use non-traditional cold treatment
either in the form of local cryotherapy for diseases of the musculoskeletal system
we are also very interested in the use of telemedicine
which we will now use as a pilot in a project for the specialized treatment of oncological patients
Are there procedures that have stood the test of time
Might we receive the same treatment today as in the 19th century
Traditional natural healing sources have not changed
but the way they are administered has changed
we can now apply Maria's gas safely under the skin
Mineral baths and gas envelopes were mostly given in groups
now we try to preserve the intimacy of the client
and most procedures are given individually
you can definitely go back to the 19th century
A special Royal Mineral Bath Cabin was built for King Edward VII
who was repeatedly treated at the Mariánské Lázně
And today you have the opportunity to take this bath in the same elegant environment
in a room lined with original tiles and in an identical bathtub made of a special metal alloy that can maintain the same water temperature for a long time
Is it possible to do a treatment over the course of a weekend
It depends on the reason for your spa treatment. Whether you are dealing with a health problem, prevention of serious diseases is important to you, or you just want to relax. A shorter stay "Healthy in Marienbad" lets you get to know our treatment
such short-term stays cannot be expected to have a significant and long-term therapeutic effect
Spa places have historically been associated with culture as well
can be experienced at Ensana hotels and in Mariánské Lázně
Mariánské Lázně is undoubtedly one of the most magical spa destinations in the Czech Republic
landscaped parks and forests that invite long walks
Regular concerts by the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra accompanied by well-known artists and regular performances in the Municipal Theater
chamber music evenings with live music take place in every spa house
the concerts on our wonderful colonnade are an amazing experience
and definitely don't miss the evening performance of our charming and colorfully lit Singing Fountain
Mariánské Lázně is among 11 exceptional spa towns from seven countries that have been inscribed on the UNESCO World and Cultural Heritage List
They received this title after a multi-year process based on a positive decision by the World Heritage Committee at its 44th session in Fuzhou
Fast Facts about Mariánské Lázně|The spa town has been visited by world-famous personalities since the beginning of the 19th century
Among the most important visitors were Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Aside from workouts with a fitness trainer
which was founded by King Edward VII in 1905
You can also take part in individual or group Nordic Walking
or you can explore Mariánské Lázně on a borrowed electric bike or scooter
What benefits does a spa stay offer and for how long should a client come to relax
Short-term stays for relaxation can range within a few days
preventive programs should not be shorter than a week
Based on our experience and taking into account the client's individual state of health
we recommend a minimum length of treatment stay of 2-3 weeks so that the effect of our treatment is long-lasting
Children are often facing respiratory ailments and other ill effects of modern life
Can families come for treatments and what are the program options for children
We do not have indications for pediatric patients at Mariánské Lázně
but we try to accommodate families with children as much as possible
parents can purchase certain procedures for their children that are approved by a specialist pediatrician
Is there a traditional "spa season?" What time of year is the best time to visit a spa hotel
And personal health is the most important thing in the world
It's never too late to start taking care of it
we take care of our clients all year round
our hotels are connected to each other through a corridor
you can indulge in relaxation in our unique and original Roman baths
individual exercises with an expert physiotherapist at Five Konzept
or special procedures housed in another spa
Name some treatments that might sound unusual to someone who has never had a Czech spa experience
Although the name of this procedure raises concerns about the painful application
the subcutaneous application of a small amount of Mary's gas really does not hurt
the effect of this procedure is immediate: pain is suppressed
the blood supply to the area improves and inflammation recedes
The gas contains up to 99 percent natural CO2
therefore the risk of an allergic reaction is minimal
What is your own personal favorite treatment and what shouldn't we miss when visiting Mariánské Lázně
My favorite procedure is certainly mineral baths
And not only for its healing effect but also for its relaxing effect
it is sometimes necessary to stop for a moment
This procedure beautifully combines the balneological effect with the psychological effect
In addition to completing our unique spa treatment
there are also walks in the clean foothills air
a visit to the colonnade with the Singing Fountain
and an evening concert in the truly classy Marble Hall of our social house
it will certainly be an unforgettable experience

She graduated in Political Science and International Relations
She moved to Brussels from Romania for her studies and Mont des Arts made her fall in love with the city and remain here
The Czech Republic is famous around the world for its spa culture
there are numerous spa towns in the country
All of them are welcoming people looking to enjoy the wellness effects of the spas
but Czech people have the additional benefit of having spa treatments covered by insurance
Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně) were inscribed on the UNESCO “Great Spa Towns of Europe” series
Moreover, the Karlovy Vary region is home to the first Radon spa in the world
The city is also inscribed as UNESCO heritage
but for its mining landscape rather than the spas
Jáchymov is known for the mining of uranium and this is where Marie Curie and her husband first isolated Radium and Polonium from Uraninite
During my recent trip to the Czech Republic I got to visit some of these famous cities
There was so much to see and do in the region that there was ultimately no time left to just sit in the spa
so while enjoying at least one day of relaxation is certainly a must
The city of Jáchymov is mostly known for its mining history
from which the mining of uranium takes the lead
at some point it was discovered that there was more to be harvested from the uranium mine
the uraninite mineral releases radon and that this new element helped release joint pain
there are 4 springs of the noble gas enriched water that are ‘harvested’ from the former uranium
mine and sent directly to the different spa hotels in the city
The Radon bath treatments are especially used for treating illnesses related to the musculoskeletal system
“Radon baths have beneficial effects on the human body since low doses of radiation in the form of radon baths stimulate the cells and their self-healing processes
The result is a strong anti-inflammatory effect.”
The second largest Czech spa, Mariánské Lázně
is the southernmost point of the West Bohemian Spa Triangle
the beauty of the era is showcased in the city’s architecture
from the singing fountain to the numerous colonnades
There are quite a few spa hotels in the city offering a variety of treatments, but one of the most beautiful and sought after experiences is the roman baths at the Nové Lázně Hotel
which combine the great history of the spa with soothing relaxation
adorned with beautiful tiles and marble columns
date back to 1896 and have been enjoyed over time by prominent rulers from around the world
The northeast point of the West Bohemia Spa Triangle is represented by Karlovy Vary
What differentiates Karlovy Vary from the other two great spa towns in the region is the hot water springs that surface around the city
including a geyser that naturally throws water up to 12m in the air
With the first records of it dating back to 1571
it is the oldest hot spring in the city and currently the only one used for baths
with water from it being redirected to different spots
The water from the mineral springs is believed to have healing properties and one of the treatments prescribed to patients is drinking it daily in diets lasting up to three weeks
There are 12 hot springs suitable for drinking around the city
with temperatures varying from just under 30˚C and up to 72˚C
There is a special type of cup that is used for drinking the water
the handle of which also serves as a straw
Naturally I asked about the reason behind this particular shape
which can be noticed by the reddish deposits on the base of the fountains
drinking it daily for several weeks can stain the teeth
a straw is used so the water has as little contact with the teeth as possible
A regular cup with a simple straw has evolved over time in the distinctive design used today
In the centre of the city lies the former Becherovka factory
now a museum dedicated to the famous herb liqueur
Although there is no hot water spring here
locals call the beverage the 13th spring of Carlsbad
The historical building was built by Jan Becher in 1867 and served as the original factory for more than 100 years
It is only in 2010 that production was moved to a new factory
built to be able to cope with the increased export demand
Becherovka is a proud product of the Czech Republic and part of its national heritage
Christian Frobrig and perfected by Jan Becher who started selling it in 1807 as a stomach illness medicine
His prescription was that a small shot in the morning and a small shot in the evening would cure any upset stomach
This is still showcased in the 100 ml “travel size” bottle that comes with the specific sized cup
The factory now produces a few variants of the liqueur: the Original
still following the 1807 secret recipe; the Unfiltered; the Cordial; the KV14
which to me tasted like the sour cherries liqueur my mother makes at home
but my suspicion of the ingredient was of course not confirmed; and my personal favourite
and each showcases a different side of the original herbal mix

Set among the rolling green hills of West Bohemia
this little sister of Karlovy Vary was visited by the elite of Europe and beyond
Chopin and HRH King Edward II all gave it glowing recommendations and Mark Twain was even tempted to become a hypochondriac here
But isn’t it better to visit a spa in the summer to take advantage of the hiking
one doesn’t visit a spa to rush about sweating
in summer the “Mariánky” are overrun by foreigners
but in the wintertime we “Czechs” have it to ourselves
after a snowfall the town turns into a winter wonderland that would make even Rudolph’s nose glow green with envy
the dead season between New Year’s and Easter is the best time to get deals on accommodations
Among those deals are free passes to the Roman baths which come when you book with most hotels
A loll in the whirlpools amidst marble columns and Neo-Renaissance arcades would make Nero himself gurgle with delight
he would waddle over to the sauna or steam baths
or paddle about in one of the three warm (32 degree Celsius) water pools or just sit on the edge
He might even pull out all the stops with an underwater massage in the original royal cabinet of HRH Edward II
If you’re going to splurge, do it in royal fashion, like HRH Edward II, at the Nove Lazne or “New Spa” Hotel
as this grande dame has been queening it over the colonnade since 1903
In addition to 97 rooms furnished in lavish Biedermeier style
the hotel offers a wellness center with an on-site mineral spring and a Mariánky speciality
In the afternoon you can take tea in the renowned Viennese Café or play chess
If you find the 97 rooms in the Nove Lazne a mite overwhelming, turn the corner to the Villa Patriot
this little classical gem set in the middle of lush gardens guarantees you the personal attention you crave
The hotel’s chic restaurant serves Czech specialties made from farm fresh local produce
paired with the best wines Moravia has to offer
Mariánky is surrounded by acres and acres of bogs full of top-quality mud. Chock full of minerals, it eases achy joints, boosts circulation, relieves muscular cramps and slows the aging process. You can get a mud pack cure at one of the many spa houses or buy a jar full to take home from the Konopná Apatyka on Hlavní 309
(Note: people with heart problems should opt out

In the evening, why not don a tux and gown and play James Bond and Vesper Lynd in one of Europe’s most beautiful casinos? From the 180-year-old cut crystal chandelier hovering above the marble lobby, to the marble pillars and stuccoed ceilings, the Casino Bellevue is a living tribute to Belle Epoque over-the-topness
is money well spent even if you don’t choose to spend the evening waltzing with Lady Luck
You can sip cocktails in the bar (forgive the regrettable hot pink bar stools) or eat an excellent meal in the casino’s Restaurant Chopin
While much of the original spa architecture the center of town has been modernized or streamlined to suit modern tastes
a tribute to a time when form was on par with function
its iron ribs and soaring vaults are reminiscent of the upturned nave of a ship
spa visitors still promenade in fair weather or foul
munching the yummy Marienbad wafers and listening to string quartets playing tunes from times when life and style were synonymous
you can watch the Singinging Fountain play world famous compositions every odd hour
the Skiareal Mariánky on the slopes of the Krakonoska “mountain” is a nice place to ditch the kids for a morning of shopping
Or you can go night skiing and follow it up with drinks at the cozy bar at the bottom of the slope
There are some beautiful trails in the vicinity of the Villa Patriot or in the nearby Slavkov Forest

Do you love beer so much you could swim in it? A fifteen minute train ride to the village of Chodova Planá, or rather to the Chodovar brewery
You can either use their beer to wash down a huge plate of goulash with dumplings in the 11th century cellar restaurant
The friendly staff will run you a tub full of the hot
then bundle you in sheepskins and let you sleep it off in their salt cave
complete with real doctors and nurses who treat real ailments
there are over 50 springs successfully used to treat disorders of everything ranging from the nerves to the kidneys
They’ll even help you shift a few of those post-Christmas kilos
But take care: not all springs are for everyone
Read the plaques and don’t drink more than 200 ml
Also note that you might feel worse a few days after you start “taking the waters.” This “Spa Reaction” is actually a good thing: it shows the waters are doing their work
Those funny flat cups everybody’s sucking on – a purely Czech invention
btw – are a perfect marriage of form and function
The flat shape makes them easy to tuck into a jacket pocket or handbag
the jutting handle prevents you from getting scalded when dipping the cup into the really hot springs and the genial built-in straw in the handle protects both your teeth (the water can damage tooth enamel) and the general public: the part of the cup that touches the mouth never comes in contact with the water

Fighting cancer not only takes a toll on the body but can deeply impact one's mental and emotional state. For those who endure surgeries and chemotherapy or radiation treatments and come out in remission, a significant recovery period during which the body regains strength still lies ahead
a country where cancer is now the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular disease
a unique program at one of the country's renowned spas wants to help ease that recovery period with soothing treatments that boost both mental and physical wellness
"Living with cancer takes an incredible physical and mental toll. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy represent an additional burden on the immune system," says Reinhard Wall, CEO of Falkensteiner Spa Resort Marienbad whose new Facing Forward
program was launched as part of an initiative that began on World Cancer Day and is continuing
The resort's holistic program is specifically designed to help guests who've overcome cancer but are in need of some additional healing
Wall describes the pillars around which the program is based as strengthening the immune system
As those who come to the program require different kinds of care
stays can be tailored to individual guests
after which an individual therapeutic plan is created for the guests based on their particular diagnosis,” he says
The program, which consists of 22 carefully selected procedures and lasts six nights and seven days, is administered under the watchful eye of the Falkensteiner medical team
comprised of highly qualified hydro-therapists
and physiotherapists led by chief physician Dr
immunity is boosted by special therapeutic baths
or laser therapy – in addition to physiotherapeutic massages and individual physiotherapy – help restore the musculoskeletal system.
Mindfulness exercises and walks in the forest (known as forest therapy)
and special water therapy aim to restore inner well-being
In addition to the Facing Forward! program, guests can take advantage of the luxurious facilities available in the recently renovated five-star hotel in Mariánské Lázně
as well as refreshing beauty treatments
and therapeutic treatments tailor-made for each guest.
Balanced and nutritious meals that include fresh seasonal ingredients and incorporate plant-based proteins
as well as preparations and cooking techniques that preserve vital nutrients are part of the hotel's culinary offerings
According to statistics from the Czech National Cancer Registry
the cancer burden in the Czech population ranks among the highest worldwide
The country has the second-highest incidence of kidney cancer in Europe and the third-highest of pancreatic cancer
Programs such as the Falkensteiner's advance awareness surrounding the unique needs of cancer survivors post-treatment and highlight the ultimate importance of stress management and self-care to one's overall wellness in both sickness and health

I have heard many times about Karlovy Vary, but I have never visited them before. Fortunately, I finally made up for it and I regret that I did it so late. This is one of the most beautiful Czech spas (located in the so-called spa triangle) has much to offer. Karlovy Vary for the weekend is a great proposition, check it out!
You can also know the city in the German name – Karlsbad
Karlovy Vary is about 125 kilometres away from Prague
Karlovy Vary has 15 districts and is inhabited by almost 50,000 residents
A significant part of the city is occupied by mountainous areas
some of the peaks exceed 600 meters above sea level
Karlovy Vary is part of the so-called spa triangle
which also includes Marianske Lazne and Frantiskove Lazne
The history of the city dates back to 1350 when Charles IV decided to build a city next to a hot spring discovered during the hunt
The settlement was named Teplé lázně near Loket
from the name Karol adopted the name Karlovy Vary
Doctor Vaclav Payer published the first book about the healing properties of water from Karlovy Vary
The city came back to life and its spa function in the 17th century
Karlovy Vary gained the status of a royal free city
Jan Becher started to produce Becherovka here
which are still standing today – Grand Hotel
the city was within the borders of the Third Reich
the stations and part of residential buildings were destroyed
Germans living in the city were displaced (about 20,000 people)
the International Film Festival takes place
which attracts the greatest stars of the world cinema to this Czech spa
and water has slightly different properties
The water temperature varies between 41 and 73 degrees
Some of the springs are included in colonnades
Water is used to treat diseases related to the digestive system
As in every spa associated with the waters
sizes and materials from which they were made
Treatment with waters from Karlovy Vary is precise and recommended by doctors
We receive recommendations from them which specific springs we should drink
The high mineralization of water can be proved by the fact that the paper rose inserted in them after several days “turns into stone”
Such flowers can be found in some places with souvenirs
One of the rivers that flow through Karlovy Vary is Tepla (Warm)
Its name comes from the fact that one of the hot springs comes to it and the river has a definitely higher temperature for some time
Above the spring there is currently something like a fountain
and the water that evaporates in the morning makes a nice effect
Karlovy Vary at various times hosted many famous people
we often come across memorial boards or information about famous people who used to be in the city
If you already visited the most important points of the city
it is worth looking at Karlovy Vary from a different perspective
there is a funicular that you can go to the top of Výšina přátelství (556 m above sea level)
The funicular was established in 1912 and then it was the longest in the Austro-Hungarian Empire
The route is 453 meters long and the inclination angle is impressive
The ticket for the train costs 90 CZK in both directions (45 CZK discounted)
At the top there is a restaurant waiting for us
drink some kofola and something that I like very much in the Czech Republic
and from its top there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area and Karlovy Vary
There are several products that are associated with Karlovy Vary. Apart from Becherovka (which was invented here and is still being produced here) and the Mattoni water
which is almost entirely available in the Czech Republic
one of the characteristic products is Karlovar Spa Wafers. The tradition of baking them dates back to 1800. They come with a variety of fillings – chocolate
cinnamon and hazelnuts or almonds. They are served both cold and hot. Wafers are about 19 cm in diameter and embossed with a symbol of a goat or a fountain. Karlovy Vary wafers are marked with the Protected Geographical Indication
given to the product in July 2011. My favourite ones are probably cinnamon served hot!
If Karlovy Vary city is not enough for you, the area around the city also has much to offer. Moser Glasswork (actually located in Karlovy Vary yet) is a place worth visiting. In addition to getting to know the crystal production process, we can also visit the museum located next to the steelworks. You can read more about this place in the text
Charles IV set off to hunt and discovered hot springs thanks to visiting in Loket
Pivovar Svatý Florian located there is another reason to visit
I had the opportunity to live in the Grand Hotel Pupp
The first rooms were built in 1701 (Saský sál)
The current appearance of the hotel is the result of the reconstruction completed in 1907
the owners bought neighbouring plots and buildings and adapted them to the hotel complex
the hotel was nationalized and was called the Grand Hotel Moscow
the hotel was privatized and the original name was restored to him
The hotel currently has 228 rooms and it has 5 stars
The interiors are stylish and make a huge impression
and among the more famous were Last Holiday (from Queen Latifah) and James Bond – Casino Royale
The list of personalities who slept at the hotel is very long
You can see the splendour in the size of houses and their ornaments
it has a great charm and walking between the tenement houses we can admire the history of the spa itself as well as stories related to famous people who visited them
be sure to visit Karlovy Vary for the weekend
The city is also perfect to become the main destination of the trip
My name is Jakub Juszyński and I create this place
Nie zabraknie tu lokalnych smaków i ciekawostek
