Please Support Continuous Local Covid-19 Coverage on Glenside Local The Cheltenham Township Historical Commission included in its May 2025 issue a thorough background of the House of Magic building The new entertainment venue opened in a former bank (most recently PNC) according to Historical Commission chair Tom Wieckowski a group of community leaders formed what The Philadelphia Inquirer called ‘the first bank in the Easton Road area north of Philadelphia,'” a Glenside resident and partner in the Philadelphia brewing firm of Class and Nachod who served as first president of the new Glenside National Bank.”  In the 1870s he lived on north 6th street and worked in various breweries apparently gradually learning the trade before going into partnership with Charles Class In 1890 In a profile that appeared in The Philadelphia Times of May 18 The great increase in the business must be ascribed largely to him.” The business apparently was very successful as the Times noted that “Class & Nachod has secured in this city an enviable reputation for making a superior lager.”With his success in business Nachod first moved to a rented home in Glenside in 1887 He then purchased a hillside plot on the turnpike directly from Widener and Elkins in 1898 in what would soon become Glenside Farms There he commissioned architect Charles Barton Keen to design a gracious home was featured in the October 1902 issue of Scientific American Building Monthly magazine and it still stands.Nachod appears to have thrown himself into the work of developing the new community He was elected to the first board of directors of the Glenside Fire Company in  March of 1900 elected to the Board of Commissioners of Abington Township about 1904 serving as the chair of the highway committee and the lighting committee in succeeding years  At the same time he joined the Glenside Protective Association whose mission was to improve living conditions in the neighborhood One curiously anachronistic effort they undertook during his tenure was to force the post office to ban smoking in the Glenside post office No documentation can be found to indicate whether their efforts were successful.Nachod spearheaded the effort to form a bank and purchased a property next to the train station The site quickly proved unworkable for the style of building Nachod wanted and he purchased a plot on the southeast corner of Glenside Avenue and the Germantown and Willow Grove turnpike (now Easton Road) “one of the most desirable building sites in the business heart of the town” according to a report in The Philadelphia Inquirer of December 19 The building was completed in late August of 1910 and the new Glenside National Bank opened for business  The first Board of Directors included Ernest Nachod in order to avoid confusion with his father He was a 1908 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and had just completed his law degree at the same school when he was appointed.Another new financial organization appeared in 1922 as the community continued its steady growth The Glenside Title and Trust Company was invited to share quarters with the Glenside National Bank and by 1925 the two organizations merged  The combined organization had total assets of $2,982,588.97 upon its merger a far cry from its initial capitalization of about half a million Nachod died suddenly in 1923 from a heart attack and did not live to see the expanded organization Fritz Quittner served as interim president Renninger took over as president of the new Glenside Bank and Trust Company in 1925 and the success of the organization led to a decision to build a new larger and more opulent home for the bank The bank moved its operation across Easton Road into one of Martin Luther Kohler’s stores on the opposite corner while the old bank was demolished Construction was under way by August of 1928 and The Philadelphia Inquirer seemed particularly enamored with the four vaults that were being installed in the new building the newspaper in a boastful tone noted that “particular attention is being paid to the vaults The walls of the vaults will be twenty-seven inches thick and of specially designed reinforced concrete They will have a steel lining on the inside as additional protection.”The new bank building of the Glenside Bank and Trust Company had its grand opening on December 14 The event “attracted thousands” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer and hundreds more political officials and banking executives The Inquirer proclaimed that the new building “is equipped to [meet] requirements of a rapidly growing suburban area for many years.” Sadly the anticipated “many years” condensed into only two Mankind labors with the trust that we can control the factors that impact our enterprises but we can be outpaced by forces of nature and society that arise to confound our efforts Such was the case with the Great Depression that inflicted the nation as the new building opened that fall and Glenside was not immune to its damaging forces A steady seepage of deposits and shortfall in investments took its toll and on Saturday Renninger gave the shocking order to lock the doors of the bank and suspend business The Philadelphia Inquirer the next day quoted Renninger’s explanation: “The directors decided it would be best to suspend business and place all affairs in the hands of the banking Department of Pennsylvania This action was absolutely necessary.”On Tuesday the Department of Banking announced that the assets of the institution would be liquidated the Department announced that assets could be returned to investors only at an estimated 47% of their original value The effort to enhance assets resulted in a public auction of several properties in Glenside that had been mortgaged by the bank Nachod’s contribution to the business life of the community was terminated after only twenty years You can also read the commission’s history Using original sources, I decided to document a direct ancestral line going back 500 years. From the past 45 years of working on my family tree, I’ve learned my great-grandmother came from an old Prague family. In recent years, through secondary sources, I broke through and showed how she was related to the famous Maharal of Prague and many others. But I wanted to see for myself if I could prove these sources were correct. So in October, I went on a trip to Prague to find evidence. I chose a different line from the Maharal because that seemed a bit too predictable; I selected the equally famous Maharik (Joseph ben Solomon Colon), perhaps the most influential Italian rabbi of the 15th century. Various sources made this quest seem possible but there were many steps along the way. This trip to Prague helped start me down the path. Most Jews have a tough time tracing their families more than 100 to 200 years back, but if you are lucky and can find a connection to Jews living in large cities, going deeper is a real possibility. Pauline Nachod, the mother of my grandfather, Arnold Schoenberg, was born in Prague in 1848. Her ancestors are buried there in the crowded old cemetery — the one with all the headstones going this way and that. Most Jews have a tough time tracing their families more than 100 to 200 years back, but if you are lucky and can find a connection to Jews living in large cities, going deeper is a real possibility. The municipal archives have more than 300 boxes of Jewish-community records that still are uncatalogued and off-limits to researchers. However, among the catalogued records are files from 1721 relating to Benet’s second marriage and some contracts concerning his house. I still need to decipher them to figure out what, exactly, they are. I also found marriage records from the 1730s, which will be very helpful for other families, but not this line. I visited the archives of the Jewish Museum of Prague, where young archivist Tomas Krakora gave me the 1748 census page for when Moses Nachod and son Avigdor were admitted back to Prague after Empress Maria Theresa had expelled all the Jews for three years, and another record of the permission and taxes for Avigdor’s 1760 wedding to Pessel Bunzel (a descendant of the Maharal). The success of this trip makes me eager to return. I am so lucky to have found so many traces of my ancestors, who lived for many centuries in this part of the world. Thinking of them walking the same streets made me feel almost like I was home. E. Randol Schoenberg is an attorney and a law lecturer at USC. As voting for the U.S. elections in the 39th World Zionist Congress nears conclusion—voting closes May 4—American Zionist Movement (AZM) Executive Director Herbert Block said there were few barriers of entry to voting in what Jewish leaders are describing as a consequential election. We are here today because Jewish fathers and mothers wanted more than happiness from their children. The bipartisan group includes Los Angeles representatives, Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) and Ted Lieu (D-West LA). Speaking ill of someone once most likely leads to a second time. And hearing gossip, just like the flu, is contagious. Many people know this city only by sight. It is the first town after crossing the Czech border (from Poland). We pass it often on our way to Prague. However, it is worth stopping in. Today I am going to introduce you the Nachod Castle, which is enough, but not the only reason, for a break on your tour! It is located a few kilometres from the Polish-Czech border you can get there on foot (we have a large number of stairs to climb The parking lot is on the opposite side of the hill (from the city) Nachod is located on the Warsaw-Prague route and is often passed by Polish tourists so it is often associated with heavy traffic jams it was rebuilt from the Gothic style to the Renaissance (16th and 17th century) the castle was supposed to defend the trade route The story of the buildings was not simple like the most castles It belonged to Hron from the Naceratic family the Piccolomini family received the castle with the surrounding area It was a reward for Ottavia Piccolomini for his conspiracy against the life of the emperor (he murdered his competitor – the owner of Nachod – Albrecht of Wallenstein) The family’s ownership in Nachod lasted until 1783 The next owner of the castle was Petr Biron his family fell out of favour after the court conspiracy of 1740 and was exiled to Siberia the family returned to favour and bought the Nachod state the castle was bought by Prince George Wilhelm Schaumburg-Lippe for 2.5 million guilders It would take a long time to write them down here so I refer you to the website of the castle they also vary depending on what we want to see It’s best to check the current price on the castle website you can also visit the underground and climb the tower If you want to see the view of the city of Nachod and you do not want to climb the tower from where you can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the area it is worth paying attention to the tapestries They make an impression with the size and compilation of the scenes presented on them Visiting the rooms you will also find a lot of paintings a large part of them due to the use of lead in paints is very dark and sometimes even barely legible A nice thing about Nachod is the rich equipment we can visit the representative salons dedicated to the Piccolomini family You can see them in the pictures hanging on the walls We can also admire the tapestries brought from Brussels (they were then considered the most valuable and the best) The Nachod area is also rich in interesting places An interesting fact is the nearby Josefov fortress or the Dobrosov fortress group we also have the Stone City of Adrspach or attractions on the Polish side (eg Kudowa Zdrój) it is also worth visiting the local Primator brewery Two brown bears live in the (drained) castle moat Looking at them it gets sad that they have to be locked up but they came here from a traveling circus so their retirement is much better than working on the road After you climb to the top where the impression is located It is an impressive structure worth visiting The body of the castle itself is composing If you are going to Prague or planning to stay in the area My name is Jakub Juszyński and I create this place Nie zabraknie tu lokalnych smaków i ciekawostek 2013-2023 © tymrazem.pl | made with ♥ by fajne studio kreatywne Link IconCopy linkFacebook LogoShare on FacebookXShare on XEmailShare via EmailLink copied to clipboardFour same-sex couples ready to tie the knot legallyThe four couples were complete strangers when they excitedly rushed into the municipal clerk's office Friday afternoon to apply for marriage licenses The four couples were complete strangers when they excitedly rushed into the municipal clerk's office Friday afternoon to apply for marriage licenses They will make history Monday when they become the first same-sex couples in Cherry Hill to marry in ceremonies acknowledged by the state to be legal All four couples will take their vows before Mayor Chuck Cahn It's nice to share it with somebody who understands," said Megan Nachod The New Jersey Supreme Court cleared the way Friday for same-sex nuptials to begin in the state Monday rejecting a delay requested by the Christie administration The high court stated in its decision "that the public interest does not favor a stay." gay couples began applying for marriage licenses Because of the state's 72-hour wait period they must hold off on saying "I do" until Monday "I've waited this long - another 72 hours is no big thing," said Dennis Gaspari will celebrate their 33d anniversary Monday by finally getting married were the first Cherry Hill couple joined in a civil union in 2007 The Nachods were the first to apply for a civil-union license that year "I'm very excited to benefit from the hard work that people have put in for a long time to fight for marriage equality," said Leigh Nachod senior minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Cherry Hill were the last to apply for a marriage license Saffos eagerly processed their applications "This is the best part of my job," Saffos said As the couples stood crowded at a counter in the cramped foyer of the clerk's office posed a question to his parents: "Why are you getting married again?" 10:22am cities across Czechia have decided to adopt quieter ways to celebrate the arrival of 2025 Many municipalities have chosen to replace traditional fireworks with drones responding to concerns about noise pollution and the environment Prague City Hall has decided once again not to hold fireworks or pyrotechnic displays in the city center The decision highlights the importance of protecting animals and preserving historical sites The ban covers pyrotechnics in the city center For those seeking official fireworks displays cities and towns surrounding Prague offer alternatives and Nymburk in Central Bohemia will continue with traditional fireworks will debut a drone show with animations and music on Jan the region will feature one of the few remaining traditional fireworks shows Hradec Králové will present a musical show instead of fireworks The shift away from fireworks is most noticeable in the Karlovy Vary region where most cities stopped organizing firework displays years ago private firecracker sales by visitors from Germany have made fireworks more of a nuisance with many setting off their own displays outside the city The Pilsen region will offer a mix of fireworks with cities like Pilsen and Přeštice planning quieter versions of their usual displays towns like Jindřichův Hradec are preparing "pyromusicals"—fireworks paired with music that are gentler on the ears Strakonice will hold a traditional fireworks show several towns are resuming fireworks after a break the displays will be more modest than in previous years The Pardubice region will feature quieter pyrotechnics in towns like Chrudim and Ústí nad Orlicí while Přelouč will continue its traditional fireworks only Znojmo and Břeclav will host fireworks New Year's fireworks will be extended by five minutes with part of the display using silent pyrotechnics for the first time Karviná and Nový Jičín will host traditional fireworks Your morning coffee deserves a great companion.
