‘we chose a house used by glassmakers as long as two hundred years ago
and breathed new life into it — a life intertwined with glass and with the roots of this traditional craft in this area
showing how traditional materials can be united with modern design and cutting-edge technology,’ says leon jakimič
LASVIT invited a number of architecture firms to submit proposals for a design that would ‘dazzle and inspire’ yet respect the history of the site’s existing buildings
the brief also called for a scheme that would provide employees and visitors with a pleasant
the buildings also had to fulfill demanding technical requirements
as LASVIT is known for its intricate and large scale kinetic glass installations that react or move to music
one of the project’s key goals was to include a hall where these works can be displayed under different lighting conditions
alongside the restored traditional houses, the complex has a new sleek black cement house and a glass house, both designed by OV-A
the glass structure is clad with tiles developed specifically for the project by LASVIT
the square glass tile is reminiscent of the shape and application of traditional slate shingles — square templates are placed diagonally
LASVIT devised a technical solution that gives the glass a similar texture to slate
the façade of the adjacent black house is overlaid with a cement wall tile
the houses on palackého square in nový bor have been occupied by glassmakers since the late 18th century
171 was a glassworks belonging to the carl schappel company from leipzig
glassmakers returned to the ancient wooden house on cast iron pillars
and set up a glassmaking school and filing shop
LASVIT has carefully restored both these protected historic sites
and is dedicated to restoring the authentic glassmaking traditions of nový bor

Novy Bor won the 2022 European Club Cup on Sunday after beating Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier in the final round
The Czech team won the tournament nine years after their first European gold in 2013. Third-seeded ASVOe Pamhagen became the surprise winners of the women's tournament as the only team to finish the competition undefeated
GM Magnus Carlsen scored an excellent 5/6 on board one of Offerspill, the seventh-seeded team that also finished in seventh place. GM Viswanathan Anand ended on a decent 3.5/6 but his team CSU ASE Superbet
As we're covering the final three rounds of the event in this report
Novy Bor was the only team to have started with four victories
The key match was played in round five, when the Czech team faced the powerhouse from Romania sponsored by the sports betting and gambling company Superbet. Playing with Anand and GM Richard Rapport on top boards
the favorites couldn't score a single win in this match
which ended in a resounding victory for Novy Bor: 4.5-1.5
GM Pentala Harikrishna won a fine game against his legendary compatriot:
The other wins for Novy Bor were scored by GM Vidit Gujrathi vs. Rapport and GM Nils Grandelius vs. GM Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu
In this round, Carlsen improved his score to 3.5/4, thanks to an impressive win with the black pieces against GM Anton Korobov
The game was part of Offerspill's 3.5-2.5 victory against Silla (Valencia)
which meant that the Norwegians could still hope for a medal—especially after their 4.5-1.5 win vs
Schach ohne Grenzen ("Chess Without Borders," from Austria) in the next round
it was Carlsen's turn to try out a Colle System with the white pieces—a setup with d4
and Bb2 named after the Belgian master Edgar Colle
The world champion won another game where he made it look so easy:
Novy Bor defeated the Viernheim Chess Club (Germany) and with one round to go
the Czech team was already two match points ahead of Offerspill (Norway) Vugar Gashimov (Azerbaijan)
and Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier (both France)
Needing just 3-3 for the gold medals, Novy Bor finished in style with a 3.5-2.5 victory vs. Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier. A key game was Harikrishna's win vs. GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
who was tricked late in the endgame after some very deep theory in the Grunfeld
The Superbet team finished in a disappointing sixth place after failing to beat Ljubljana Chess Club (Slovenia) in the final round
saw Anand playing another compatriot and winning this time:
Superbet's GM Gukesh D., however, lost his game to GM Andrei Volokitin
The Ukrainian grandmaster scored 6.5/7 or a 2931 performance and won 18 rating points
It's somewhat comforting to know Volokitin could forget about the war for a few hours each day and concentrate on chess
but now it's back to the sad reality that the Ukrainians have to deal with
While I am sitting at the Warsaw airport, the terrorist country is now bombing all Ukrainian cities, including my native Lviv. All family and friends are in shock. https://t.co/ejw7KcJnYG
Meanwhile, Asnieres's board-two GM Andrey Esipenko (who plays under the FIDE flag
like some of Russia's grandmasters who don't want to represent their country since the start of the war) had a great week as well
Rapport probably expected something else from his first tournament under the Romanian flag
2022 European Club Cup | Final Standings (Top 20)
ASVOe Pamhagen's victory in round three against top seed Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo proved to be the sign on the wall that this was going to be their week
The winners are a local team (with international players
but that's the case for most top teams): Pamhagen is an Austrian town about 60 km southwest of Vienna
Pamhagen held the Superbet women's team to 2-2 in round four before beating SK Erste Bank Baden (also Austria) and Odlar Yurdu (Azerbaijan)
BGK KS Gwiazda Bydgoszcz secured the gold medals for Pamhagen
Osmak scored a good win in the final round with the black pieces:
Although Danielian scored minus one overall, her quick win in the penultimate round was an important one. The players followed 54-year-old theory, but when they deviated from a GM Miguel Najdorf game
2022 European Women's Club Cup | Final Standings
The 37th European Club Cup and the 26th European Women’s Chess Club Cup took place October 3-9
Both events were a seven-round Swiss with teams of six players in the open section and teams of four in the women's section
The time control was 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move

GM Ihor Samunenkov (2533) and GM Gergely Aczel (2460) respectively
Praggnanandhaa made a very nice practical pawn sacrifice 27...b3
to create a passed pawn 28.axb3 a3 29.Bc4 Qb4 ensuring the b3-pawn remains fixed
so that the white bishop cannot control the a2-square
Black eventually used his passed a-pawn to his advantage and went on to win the game

Novy Bor Chess Club defeated Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier 3.5-2.5 in the final round to win European Chess Club Cup 2022 with a perfect score 14/14
Vidit Gujrathi's fantastic six game winning streak came to an end against Andrey Esipenko

Photo: WIM Fiona Steil-Antoni/European Chess Club Cup 2022
Harikrishna's 64.3% performance was second after Carlsen on the second board
Vidit tied with Esipenko 85.7% on Board no.2
the final round loss pushed his tie-breaks lower. Thus
ASVOe drew with BGK KS Gwiazda Bydgoszcz in the final round to finish with a score of 12/14 and win the Women's event
Both CSU ASE Superbet and Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo scored 11/14 each

Although Superbet lost to Monte Carlo in the penultimate round
The total prize fund of the tournament was €40000
€25000 in the Open and €15000 in the Women
€4000 and €2000 each respectively along with trophies and medals
Individual board prizes were awarded €500 and a medal each
Pentala Harikrishna (2717) defeated the reigning World Blitz champion
Vidit Gujrathi (2710) lost to Andrey Esipenko (2668)
Both players exchanged pieces at regular intervals and the game arrived at a rook and bishop endgame after 23 moves
the Frenchman made an unforced error of retreating his bishop to prevent a checkmate at f8
The better alternatives were 25...Kf7 and Rb8 which would have kept things in balance
25...Bg7 created an opportunity for White 26.d6!+- which sealed Black's fate
He opted to play with rook and bishop against a queen 26...Bxh6 27.d7 Bxc1 28.d8Q+ and soon Black had to give up his bishop
The queen versus rook endgame was completely winning for White
It was just a matter of time and technique
something we all know Harikrishna can convert without any difficulties as endgame is his forte
Vishy Anand (2756) once again showed the world why he is still the World no.9 and India no.1
despite taking an administrative and mentorship role
The maestro is certainly going to make the teenagers work hard to earn the top spot
Nihal Sarin (2673) drew with Bogdan-Daniel Deac (2707) and D Gukesh (2732) lost to Andrei Volokitin (2645)
Arjun opted for a sideline in the Ruy Lopez which really did not give him a comfortable position in the middlegame
The only sacrifice Black could have made on White's kingside is 24...hxg3 25.hxg3 Bxf4
he opted for 24...Nxh2 25.Kxh2 hxg3+ 26.Kg2 Bxf4 and things quickly fell apart for White

Offerspill Chess Club was crowned as the champions in the open division of the recently concluded 2023 European Chess Club Cup (ECCC) after scoring six match wins and a draw against some of the world's top club teams in Durres
Led by GM Magnus Carlsen on board one (5/6) and Indian maestro GM Raunak Sadhwani (5/7)
Offerspill won the €10,000 first prize ahead of Gokturk Chess Sport Club and Novy Bor
In the women's event, the GM Nino Batsiashvili-led team Superchess secured victory in the final round with a 2.5-1.5 victory over the eventual runners-up, Garud Ajka BSK, which featured Batsiashvili's compatriot GM Bela Khotenashvili
The 38th European Chess Club Cup and the 27th European Chess Club Cup Women concluded yesterday in Durres, Albania 🇦🇱! @ECUonline Congratulations to the winners! 👏👏Open Section🥇 Offerspill Sjakklubb 🥈 Novy Bor🥉 Gokturk Chess Sport ClubWomen's Section🥇 Superchess🥈… pic.twitter.com/89OhQhR8DK
Taking place at Durres' five-star Grand Blue Fafa Resort and boasting a €32,000 prize fund
the ECCC brought in many of the world's best players to play for their respective clubs
registered teams were required to build eight-player rosters and elect six players to participate in each round of a seven-round team Swiss tournament
To many chess fans, it would almost seem a surety that a team stacked with Carlsen, Sadhwani, GM Eric Hansen, and GM Aryan Tari would win comfortably
Offerspill Chess Club was only seeded fourth in the event
After coasting through the first four rounds of the event
round five is where the slugfests truly began as the top four folded inwards and determined which two teams would play for the lead
Team Superchess lived up to expectations and toppled the French team
Draws on all boards, including one between Anand and the newly minted super-GM Haik Martirosyan, were outshone by Fedoseev's win over Armenia's GM Sergei Movsesian
which tipped the match in Superchess' favor
A similar tale panned out in Novy Bor-Offerspill Chess Club
and the former world champion came in clutch against Keymer to break the deadlock and upset the defending champions 3.5-2.5
the determination shown in his first four games (which he won) indicated a will to help carry his team to his first European chess title and an opportunity to forget the woes of Norway's recent Olympiad performances
the inevitable match between Superchess and Offerspill Chess Club took place in round six
two illustrious crews of GMs hungry for victory
the round was merely an exhibition of what happens when an immovable object meets an irresistible force..
the draw was most favorable for Offerspill
who led by 1.5 game points (which would act as the first tiebreaker in the event of a tie) heading into the final round
the top four teams had all worked their way back to boards one and two and were all within reach of seizing the title
Meanwhile, in the other critical matchup, Asnieres- La Grand Echiquier-Offerspill Chess Club, tense draws in GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave-Carlsen and Martirosyan-Sadhwani left the result in the hands of the lower boards
Board six GM Matthieu Cornette's winning position against GM Frode Urkedal gave a glimmer of hope to the French club. However, Tari and Offerspill's youngest player, GM Pranav Venkatesh
won their games and secured a historic victory for their team
Upon receiving the colossal winner's trophy at the prizegiving ceremony
Carlsen spoke with gusto: "I am so surprised
every single one of the boys did amazing."
Magnus Carlsen wins his first European title! 🔥🥇 Offerspill Sjakklubb, comprised of five-time World Champion and world #1 Magnus Carlsen, Raunak Sadhwani, Aryan Tari, Pranav, Eric Hansen, Johan-Sebastian Christiansen, Frode Olav Olsen Urkedal and Benjamin Haldorsen, won their… pic.twitter.com/yhTToAFdH8
the final round was a disappointing one although as a club they could take solace in the fact that their women's team surged to victory in their section
A single-match loss at the hands of TAJFUN SK Ljubljana in round three spooked the 2454-average-rated Superchess team but the second seeds were simply too strong for their other competitors
Many of the tournament's participants will now travel to the Middle East for the Qatar Masters
where one of 2023's strongest open events will commence on October 11

The fifth annual Czech Architecture Prizes were awarded in a ceremony streamed from Prague’s Divadlo Archa. The main prize went to Jiří Opočenský and Štěpán Valouch from the studio ov architekt for the renovation and completion of the headquarters of glassmaker Lasvit in Nový Bor.
The jury chose from among six buildings that made the final round, selected from an original total of 27 nominees presented in June. The contest is organized by the Czech Chamber of Architects (ČKA)
The seven-member international jury was headed by French architect Henri Bava
They met in early September to view and discuss the nominated buildings in detail
The jury welcomed the breadth and scope of the submissions
which ranged from large buildings to a parking lot
imagination and sensitivity to wider relationships were evident in many projects,” the jury stated jointly
“Our surroundings have a huge impact on our lives and how we live them
Thoughtful designs that are carefully implemented to create places encouraging social contacts and allowing for decent conditions through a suitably chosen scale are the basis of good architecture
the architects from ov architekti designed a sensitive renovation of a group of traditional 19th century North Bohemian wooden buildings
supplemented by two new buildings of similar building volume
"The awarded work is a combination of the original and the proposed
the traditional with the completely contemporary
It was the bravura approach to the given problem and the ease with which the final output operates in such a complex architectural environment that led the jury to the final verdict and the award of the main prize,” the jury stated
adding that the complex signals a bold attempt at a non-standard
five other works from across the Czech Republic received the honorary Finalist Award
Two of them are from Atelier 111 architekti: a family house in Jinonice and a workshop in Opatov
Both were appreciated for their simplicity
The revitalization of Prague’s Náplavka by Petr Janda and brainwork was praised for its high quality installations and simple modifications to the walls of the waterfront
Chybik + Kristof Architects & Urban Designers were recognized for their attention to detail in converting a brewery in Znojmo
Vyšehrad atelier’s renovation of a nursery school in Pacov made it a pleasant environment for children
The Ministry for Regional Development Award for promoting quality construction through architectural competitions went to Ehl & Koumar Architekti for a fire station and technical service center in Líbeznice
The Ministry of Industry and Trade Award for a generous approach to new industrial construction was gained by ellement architects for the Pilana Karbid production and administrative center in Hulín
earned the Czech Agency for Nature and Landscape Protection Award for inspiring solutions in the natural environment
Chybik + Kristof Architects & Urban Designers took the Central Group Award for an innovative approach to new housing for their Vila Park Olomouc
Progres Atelier’s Jára Cimrman Elementary School in Prague’s Lysolaje district won the Velux Award for working with daylight
The Vekra Award for affordable housing with a timeless perspective went to Pro-Story for the Na Sylvánu housing project in Plzeň
The Academy of the Czech Architecture also gave an Outstanding Achievement award to Czech Television for its Noisy Cities and Noisy Footprints programs

One of the main concerns of our member federations and the chess community
was the uncertainty related to the two next Olympiads: Moscow 2021
hosting the chess Olympiad comes with the associated responsibility of organizing the World Cup as well
which under the current situation is an additional complication
The FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich explained the situation and the decision made as follows:
“Given that the Republic of Belarus and its government have decided that they cannot hold the Olympiad
another host for the 2022 Olympiad and the World Cups
we have been left with no other choice than to have just one Olympiad during this period
We have received a kind proposal from the Russian government to host the two World Cups simultaneously next year
and to have the Olympiad in Russia 2022.”
Khanty-Mansiysk will still host the FIDE Olympiad for players with Disabilities and the FIDE Congress in Khanty during the summer next year
No one was happy to hear that we all will have to wait until 2022 to enjoy a chess Olympiad
but the slight disappointment quickly dissipated when the representatives of the Hungarian Chess Federation presented their project for Budapest 2024
The tournament is scheduled to run from September 10 to September 23 at the renovated Hungexpo Exhibition and Conference Centre
and prominent members of the Hungarian Olympic movement and the sports administration have expressed their unconditional support to the event
You can download a complete presentation for Budapest 2024 here

GM Vishy Anand (2756) had a relatively calm draw against GM Rauf Mamedov (2646)
GM D Gukesh (2732) defeated IM Ahmad Ahmadzada (2488) comfortably
Black's position is already quite difficult to play
38...Rxd5 only hastened his loss 39.exd5+ Qg6 40.Qd4 Qe8 41.d6 Qd7 42.Qxb6 and Black resigned
GM Pentala Harikrishna (2717) had an 80-move long draw against GM Maxim Rodshtrein (2602)

How did Pentala Harikrishna bounce back after losing to Magnus Carlsen? By winning against Vishy Anand for the very first time in his career. Harikrishna played to his strength and outplayed the maestro in the endgame. Vidit Gujrathi scored his fifth win in-a-row. He defeated the new Romania no. Richard Rapport to become World no.24 in the live ratings
Novy Bor Chess Club defeated CSU ASE Superbet convincingly 4.5-1.5 to maintain their sole lead 10/10
They will face Schachclub Viernheim 1934e.V
who is currently in sole second place
There is a reason Novy Bor Chess Club has claimed a podium finish in the last three editions of European Chess Club Cup 2022
One of the reason could possibly be that most of the players are playing for the team for a very long time
Harikrishna is playing for Novy Bor since 2014
He will face Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the penultimate sixth round
while Vidit Gujrathi who is back in his form
Pentala Harikrishna (2717) and Vidit Gujrathi (2710) defeated Vishy Anand (2756) and Richard Rapport (2754) respectively
This was Harikrishna's first win ever against Anand of his career
D Gukesh (2732) drew with David Navara (2676)
It is well-known that he is very strong in the endgame
arrived into a bishop and knight endgame in less than 25 moves
31.e5 posed an innocuous question of where should the knight retreat
the maestro displaced it to e8 which was not the best choice
31...Ne8 32.Nd4 Ng7 33.Kf2 h6 34.Ke3 Be8 35.Bc4 Bd7 36.b4 and soon the lack of squares for the black knight to move around freely became evident
White improved his position slowly and at an opportune moment exchanged his bishop with his opponent's knight which gave him a completely winning knight vs bishop endgame
The Berlin Defence in Ruy Lopez is a solid opening for Black
It is considered drawish due to the nature of the opening
A draw with the black pieces against a strong opponent is often considered to be a good result
The last time Vidit Gujrathi defeated Richard Rapport with the black pieces in a rated game was in World Team 2015, over seven years ago
exchanging the pawns first does not give Black the opportunity to get rid of the doubled c-pawns which is what happened in the game. 29.Kf2 c5 30.Ndc2 Bf5 31.cxb4 cxb4 32.Ke3 c5 and the position is completely in favor of Black
33.h3 c4 34.bxc4 Nxc4+ and Vidit has shown over the years that he does not miss these opportunities of converting substantial advantages in the endgame
replying to a GM Peter Svidler's analysis during the live stream
Arjun Erigaisi (2728) drew with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2747)
Nihal Sarin (2673) missed a win against Yuriy Kuzubov (2612)
White does not need to rush and take the g5-pawn
use it as a blockade to keep his g4-pawn alive
64.Rxh6 + Kxh6 65.Nxc5 Kg6/7 66.Nb3 Kf6 67.Nxa5 Be1 68.Nc6+-
Black cannot even easily attack the g4-pawn
A half point more would have drawn the match for the team

GM Johan-Sebastian Christianssen buckled under pressure in the second round

The first museum of glass has opened in Prague
Portheimka Palace in the Smíchov district will house close to 200 works from Czech glassmakers as well as showcase pieces from international exhibitors
The best glass artists to emerge from the Czech lands are represented across six rooms in this Baroque villa where Dvořák once played
The palace was constructed in the 1720s by the architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer as a summer residence for his family
According to the curators of the new space
the second half of the 20th century saw the rich history of Czech glass-making give birth to a new genre of art
so-called studio glass with works comparable to today’s painting and sculpture emerging during that era
