There's a scene in Richard Linklater's 2004 film
where protagonists Jesse and Céline drift past Notre Dame on a Paris riverboat
Jesse tells a story of its near-destruction
Occupying Nazis filled Notre Dame with explosives and intended to blow it up during World War II
but the German soldier tasked with detonating the cathedral couldn't bring himself to do it
But you have to think that Notre Dame will be gone one day," Céline replies
The story is exaggerated. But the lesson is on display in Olomouc, an ancient city tucked away in the leafy eastern Czech Republic. The inner city's crown jewel is a towering astronomical clock said to date back as far as the late 1400s or early 1500s
Destroyed and rebuilt many times in its history
the clock is a stark reminder that the artifacts we see are never guaranteed to be final
It's often said that "history is written by the victors." So is the art—and that can distort or limit our understanding of the places we visit
The clock suffered damage during World War II
The resulting renovation (put wryly by that pamphlet as "the final negation of the astronomical clock's lasting historical worth as an artistic monument") in the 1950s left only the clock mechanism intact
introducing socialist realist depictions of laborers
The updated clock also honors old communist holidays
including the dates of Vladimir Lenin's birth and Josef Stalin's death
When the communist Czechoslovak regime fell and monuments of that era were removed, locals wondered what to do about the now-antiquated clock. There "came a question of legal precedent as to whether it would be possible to return the astronomical clock to a dignified appearance," the informational pamphlet explains
"Discussion was tabled at the very outset when the local Monuments Institution absolutely refused to consider the astronomical clock as a monument."
The clock, updated 70 years ago, is outdated once again. Rather than reminding onlookers of the virtues of a living, breathing regime, its face acts more as a gravestone, commemorating a long-abandoned state. The work, "in its own way, bears witness to a time which it would be advisable not to forget," the pamphlet notes
the famously poor artist often reusing canvases by working on the backside
but only because the post–World War II reconstruction effort following its total destruction was based on original plans from the 1720s
An observer might not realize that so much has changed in the meantime
The designers of Olomouc's astronomical clock had their sights set on the long term. They were "optimists," wrote the professional traveler Rick Steves
"The mechanism displaying the year is capable of spinning up to AD 9999."
The Long Now Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to long-term thinking, is building a clock that will keep time for the next 10,000 years—a length of time about equal to the age of modern civilization. "If you have a Clock ticking for 10,000 years what kinds of generational-scale questions and projects will it suggest?" wrote Kevin Kelly
"If a Clock can keep going for ten millennia
shouldn't we make sure our civilization does as well?"
The clock in Olomouc may have many more faces yet to come
But the mechanical core has remained constant for hundreds of years
If the current face represents the winning vision of a bygone era
the technology underneath represents a commitment to what comes next

Deep below the historical city centre of Olomouc
Blasted with explosives in the 1950s to host the headquarters of local Civil Defence (Civilni Obrana) in case of an atomic war
the bunker has served different purposes throughout the years
it was a military installation with all the requirements needed to survive for several weeks in the case of a nuclear apocalypse
In 1989, with the onset of the Velvet Revolution
and the gradual transition to a market economy within the 90s
the bunker fell into the hands of the local municipal council
the council rented out the bunker for free
This led to a grassroots movement called Civil Culture Bunker (Kryt civilni kultury)
which tried to turn the location into a new cultural venue
for the city's extensive student population
The COVID-19 pandemic brought an end to student events. Today, the bunker lives on as a museum, with an exhibition of the personal stories from contemporaries of World War II and the communist era.
Kryt Civilní Ochrany - Institut Paměti národa Olomouc (as it's listed on google maps) is easily identifiable by a large Czech flag with the first president of Czechoslovakia, Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, painted over it. Keep in mind that it is accessible from the Bezrucovy sady park, below the level of the historical city centre. Its interior can be visited each Saturday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.. It can be pretty cold inside, so do bring a jacket.
Entry is possible only in the presence of a guide and the visiting times are 10.00, 13.00 and 16.00 on Saturdays and 14.00 on Thursdays from mid May to mid September. There's a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 20 participants on each tour and the admission charge is a symbolic 20Kč.
Tickets are available and the tour begins from the tourist information office on the main square. The walk down into the park behind St Michael's takes about 5 minutes and it may take another five minutes for the guide to open the heavy steel doors that were the first line of defence against nuclear chemical or conventional attack.
An interactive museum-like experience takes visitors back to 1980s Communist Bulgaria.
Under the streets of La Rochelle, a former wartime bunker holds some surprising secrets.
A memorial to the atrocities of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania.
An antiquated aquarium housed in a converted government anti-nuclear bunker.
An underground city beneath Krakow's postwar socialist utopia.
In the heart of Tirana, this underground nuclear bunker has been transformed into a museum.
The monastery survived the Communist revolution in Mongolia as a religious museum.

The Czech Republic was hit by wide-scale flooding across the country this weekend
with the most severe conditions seen in the Moravia-Silesia Region and the north of the Olomouc Region
Large-scale evacuations were required in Krnov
100-year peak flows were observed; thousands of residents had to leave their homes and some villages were completely cut off from the outside world due to flooded roads
The Katerinky housing estate in Opava was inundated when the river overflowed
Firefighters were using boats to rescue people who had not yet left
The mountain village of Mala Upa in the eastern Krkonoše was inaccessible due to landslides
Extreme flood emergencies were declared for two places in South Moravia
and water was overflowing from the Husinec and Rimov reservoirs in South Bohemia
Around 260,000 households in the country were without power on Sunday morning due to the bad weather
with hundreds of faults reported on high-voltage lines
around half of these had been reconnected; the majority of those still without power were in the Moravia-Silesia Region (76,000 households) and the Olomouc Region (29,000)
There was also widespread disruption on roads and railways
with transport operators urging their passengers to postpone their journeys if possible
Firefighters in the Olomouc Region had evacuated about 1,900 residents as of yesterday afternoon
and had to use boats in some rescue operations
The inhabitants of Bohuslavice and Lestina in the Sumperk area were evacuated overnight on Saturday due to flooding on the Morava River
Several hundred inhabitants of Ceska Ves in Jesenice and neighbouring Pisecna also had to leave their homes
many residents refused the evacuation order
leaving hundreds of people in flooded houses
a town of 23,000 people in the foothills of the Jeseniky mountains
was completely cut off from the outside world
Regional Governor Josef Belica told CTK that the region and the fire service had sent an aid convoy to the town with food and drinking water
brought by Tatra trucks that can drive through deep water
we are ready to evacuate the entire town,” the governor added
Krnov’s Deputy Mayor Miroslav Binar (ANO) estimated that 70-80% of the town was under water
and the situation was much more serious than previous devastating floods in 1997
He said water was approaching the designated evacuation centres
which would themselves have to be evacuated
adding that the city could no longer effectively help its residents
part of the D55 motorway in the Zlin Region was closed due to flooding on Sunday morning
The D1 motorway was impassable at Bohumin in the Karvina area
and was already closed around Ostrava by Saturday night
Dozens of sections of railways were closed around the country
where railway transport was almost paralysed
At a press conference yesterday following a meeting of the Central Flood Commission
Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Interior Minister Vit Rakusan asked citizens to heed calls to evacuate during the current floods; Fiala told CNN Prima News later that the situation should not be underestimated
a helicopter was rescuing people who had refused to evacuate from rooftops and attics
He appealed for the public to be reasonable and not cause unnecessary work for firefighters and emergency rescue services
He said that a precautionary evacuation is better than people needing the help of a rescue helicopter in bad weather conditions
as there was a great demand for emergency services in many parts of the country
He said the same applied to those attempting to enjoy the stormy waters by engaging in leisure activities such as paddleboarding
Firefighters and police officers rescued a man from the Vltava River in Prague yesterday who wanted to swim in the swollen river.
Environment Minister Petr Hladik (KDU-CSL) said that four people were missing
and three in the Jeseniky area who were unaccounted for after their vehicle was washed into a waterway
The Central Flood Commission has asked citizens who want to show solidarity with the affected areas to direct any material donations through the Czech Federation of Food Banks
The firefighters currently do not have the capacity to coordinate aid
According to Agriculture Minister Marek Vyborny (KDU-CSL)
bottled drinking water is starting to run out in the affected areas
villages along the Velička River around Hodonín were partially flooded
there was also serious flooding of roads and properties at Podhradí nad Dyjí near Znojmo
Antonín Tůma from Povodí Morava said that the heavy rainfall in Austria and in the Dyje basin
causing sharp rises in water levels in the tributaries of the Vranovská Dam
Grolich noted that precipitation in the vicinity of the Vranovská dam was almost twice that predicted by meteorologists on Saturday morning
Water managers will gradually increase the outflow from the Vranovská dam to 150 and then up to 220 cubic metres of water per second
According to estimates from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ)
Veselí nad Moravou and Břeclav will start receding only on Thursday
firefighters are building preventive barriers in Veselí na Moravou and strengthening the dam of the river Svratka in Vojkovice (Židlochovice)
According to Povodí Morava’s estimates
and outflow from the reservoir will therefore increase to around 90 m 3/s
which could cause minor overflows into gardens in Jundrov
The Svratka river in Židlochovice was declared to be at the third level of risk
the river could rise to a maximum height of 530 centimetres
the river should have reached its peak yesterday morning
Rajhradice and Opatovice were the main settlements at risk
Anti-flood bags were produced by firefighters and volunteers at the Brno Exhibition Grounds
more anti-flood bags were made than needed
then shared with other municipalities in South Moravia
according to the forecast of meteorologists
rain will continue in the south of Moravia
“It doesn’t look 50 millimetres anymore
but it could be up to 30 millimetres,” added Grolich
the area is completely saturated and even minor rainfall could bring us problems
We must also be prepared for the fact that a large amount of water will flow from Jeseníky into the Morava River
a large amount will flow from Bečva.”
police officers had to rescue a 36-year-old man who fell into the Svitava river at Mlýnské nábřeží when the river’s bank suddenly gave way

Yunusa Muritala in action for OlomoucČTK / Kamaryt MichalCzech champions Sparta Prague were stunned by Sigma Olomouc in Friday's opening match of the 10th round of the Chance League
Although Sparta took an early lead with a goal from Victor Olatunji (25)
fellow Nigerian Yunusa Muritala (24) stole the show for Sigma in the second half
scoring an equaliser and also adding an assist as Olomouc won 3-2.With the result
the home side from Prague suffered their first-ever competitive defeat under new manager Lars Friis and lost at home for the first time since last May
As expected, it was the Spartans who stormed into the match with great vigour. They managed to get the ball into the net after only four minutes, but Lukas Haraslin was offside on his run and his shot could not stand
the home side made up for it in the 13th minute
Peter Vindahl's surgically precise kick found Veljko Birmancevic running on the right wing, who centred to Olatunji from the first
and the latter successfully finished off the wonderful move of the side in red with a superb header
They dominated the rest of the opening period at a rainy Epet Arena
they went into the dressing rooms with only the narrowest of leads
Key match statsFlashscoreAfter returning to the pitch
the pace of the match dropped slightly and the first major upset came after 10 minutes of the second half
Matej Rynes found himself untouched by anyone in the centre of the pitch
ideally prepared the ball and practically from a step he hit it with his left foot into the crossbar so forcefully that it was still shaking for a few seconds
Shortly before the start of the last twenty minutes, an Olomouc cross made it to Matej Mikulenko, from whom it bounced to Muritala to score
and despite Sparta's dominance so far
To make matters worse, in the 78th minute, Sigma's Nigerian striker took a shot at Vindahl, who flicked the ball to substitute Jan Fiala
Then, after a throw-in near his own penalty area, Jaroslav Zeleny mis-controlled the ball, offering it to Filip Zorvan, who finished into the empty net to shock the Spartans for the third time. The home team added a consolation goal through Ermal Krasniqi late on
No more goals were scored and Olomouc took a sensational three points away
Sparta must now prepare for a busy week when they first play in the Champions League in Stuttgart and then play the Prague derby against Slavia
Sigma will try to build on their surprise triumph at home against Bohemians
See all the match stats here.
Archaeologists from the Olomouc Archaeological Centre (ACO) have made a remarkable discovery near Olomouc while conducting a rescue excavation along the future route of the D35 highway between Křelov and Neředín
Two significant burial sites have been uncovered
including the largest burial site found from the Nitra culture from the Early Bronze Age in Central Moravia
is considered one of the most important findings in the research of this culture
we can reconstruct the physical appearance of the inhabitants of that time
and migration strategies,” explains lead researcher Vendula Vránová through a press release
The graves contained not only skeletal remains but also goods such as copper ornaments
some of the graves showed signs of post-mortem manipulation
suggesting that transitional burial rituals were performed even after death
This indicates a complex relationship with death and the afterlife within the culture
The burial practices at the site revealed distinct differences between how men and women were interred
Men were often buried with boar tusks and hunting tools
while women were accompanied by jewelry and antler beads
This distinction underscores the cultural significance of gender in ancient Nitra society
The site also yielded graves associated with the Corded Ware culture
suggesting a mutual respect between the two cultures
Earlier graves were likely marked by burial mounds
indicating that the younger culture acknowledged and respected the older burial traditions
Another significant area of the excavation
revealed four different burial periods spanning over 3,000 years
This area was used for burial purposes from the Late Stone Age until the 9th century
coinciding with the presence of Slavic populations in the territory of Great Moravia
archaeologists discovered 17 skeletal graves from the Corded Ware culture
four of which featured deep burial pits with rich grave goods
we also found a pair of axes—one polished and the other flaked,” Vránová explains
Surrounding the graves were circular ditches
likely remnants of wooden structures that delineated the sacred burial space from the surrounding area
This is only the fifth site where archaeologists have successfully identified such boundary ditches
a significant find was the grave of a 3rd-century Germanic warrior
complete with a shield and iron spear—an unprecedented discovery in Moravia
The excavation also revealed seven cremation graves containing typical metal jewelry associated with Celtic culture
The rescue archaeological research along the D35 route was conducted from August 2023 to April 2024
The next phase will involve analyzing the discovered artifacts and skeletal remains
Laboratory analyses aim to provide new insights into the physical characteristics
and genetic relationships of the ancient inhabitants of this region
“Our fieldwork has ended, but now we face the most critical phase—detailed analysis and interpretation of the findings,” Vránová notes

an Erasmus student from Camosun College in Canada
embraced a life-changing opportunity to study abroad last year
choosing the Faculty of Physical Culture PU for her experience
From attending engaging courses like Disability Studies to running a half marathon in Olomouc
her time was filled with growth and adventure
Lindsay opens up about the highs and challenges of her Erasmus experience
how it shaped her personally and professionally
and explains why she recommends the international experience to everyone
Curious about her story and the impact of this adventure on her life
Read on to discover Lindsay’s inspiring journey
Why did you choose our university for your Erasmus study experience
I chose this university partly because it offered extra funding to support living abroad
while also being a very central location for exploring Europe and it was going to be such a different cultural experience than living at home
Were your expectations different from the reality
I didn’t really have many expectations from the experience since I have never lived or studied anywhere else
So generally speaking I would say going into the experience with no expectations was a good way to go
Can you compare your study experience in Olomouc with the experience from your home university
The quality of content was less demanding here compared to home
A lot of courses that were transferable are ones I have already taken so I can compare them accurately and I would say that the ones from my home program have a lot more information and have more assignments and exams
The content was far more in depth at home. What was your favourite course and why
My favourite course was Disability Studies because it was very involved
I learned lots about different adapted sports and it was a lot of fun learning how to play them and run warm ups or drills to learn the skills required for them
I spent a lot of time traveling to other countries
and got into running which led me to signing up for a half marathon in Olomouc.
Was the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) helpful during your stay?
I enjoyed all of the events that they hosted and it was such a great way to create friendships with the other international students
I particularly enjoyed the national presentations to learn about different countries of the students studying here
What were some of the biggest challenges you had to overcome as an Erasmus student
I didn’t know about the beginner’s course offered until after arriving as it wasn’t on the course selection when I was organizing my semesters
Learning how to navigate the transportation was also challenging but once I figured it out it was easier
As an older student it was a bit harder to find common ground with my peers as well
What is the single most memorable experience you have from your Erasmus life?
Attending the pub quizzes with all the friends I made through the program was probably my favourite experience
Creating friendships with people from all over the world and expanding my knowledge on their homes and what is going outside of my country was also a great experience
And I will forever remember running a half marathon there
Have you changed because of your Erasmus experience
and proved to myself that sometimes doing scary
Life can be difficult no matter where you are in the world and you can pretty much adapt to anything if you believe in yourself enough
How can this experience benefit your future career
I learned about how different countries run programs which can be beneficial to bring to any future jobs
It makes you think about things in a different way
Would you recommend the exchange stay at the Faculty of Physical Culture PU to your friends
I think the courses could be more beneficial if some of the physiotherapy ones were allowed to be chosen when coming from the Kinesiology program in regards to the education aspect
the ESN group puts on such a wonderful set of events to attend
the instructors are friendly and easy to communicate with and the accommodation is fine and conveniently located regarding classes
I had a wonderful experience and while I might not be back for schooling
I hope to make it back to visit the people I met and see this lovely city again
I definitely recommend allowing students to choose from the physiotherapy program courses as when I looked at them further I think they would have been more applicable to my program at home which is really important for financial support and efficiency for completing the degree in a timely manner.

Local fire agencies will join a Firefighter Exchange partnership with Owensboro’s Sister City, Olomouc, Czech Republic. The first group will have 10 members.
The first representatives, including members from the Owensboro Fire Department, Daviess County Fire Department, Airport Sorgho Fire Department, and the Fire Academy of Kentucky, will spend a week in Olomouc.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in the 30-year friendship and collaboration between Owensboro and Olomouc.
Owensboro Fire Department Chief James Howard will be in the first group, and he said he is excited to take this step in Owensboro and Olomouc’s relationship.
“While we look forward to making some new friends, our main objective is to learn about methods, equipment, and infrastructure that can help us to better protect our own community,” Howard said.
Katerine Zbořil, an OSCAR Board Member, said the partnership aims to foster international cooperation and enhance firefighting capabilities through shared learning and training experiences.
“Our main goal for this exchange is to help save lives,” Zbořil said. “By opening our minds to new operations and techniques, we can broaden our tools in the use for saving lives. If even one life is saved from something we learn in Olomouc, that would be a priceless measure of success.”
During their stay in Olomouc, the group will engage in a series of activities to deepen their understanding of firefighting practices and procedures in the Czech Republic. Highlights include immersive tours of fire departments in Olomouc, collaborative planning meetings for future training programs, and participation in cultural activities in Olomouc and Prague.
“This exchange exemplifies the power of international partnerships in advancing public safety and strengthening community ties,” said City Manager Nate Pagan. “We are thrilled to facilitate this meaningful exchange and look forward to the positive impact it will have on both the Owensboro and Olomouc communities.”
