an unusual historical site located in Těchonín in Czechia's Pardubice Region
welcomes visitors with a range of new exhibits and improvements
Known for its key role in Czechoslovakia’s pre-WWII fortifications
the site is unveiling a fresh collection of artifacts
the local government is seeking national heritage status for the site
which would further elevate its significance
which is one of only five completed and the only one still preserved in its original form
is now an interesting stop for history enthusiasts and tourists
The site’s updates are part of an ongoing renovation effort to preserve and enhance the fortification’s appeal for future generations
Among the major updates this year is the opening of a new exhibit in the munition hall M2
which focuses on the resilience of Czechoslovak fortifications during WWII
The exhibit highlights the various weapons tested on the fortress
offering visitors a chance to see German military equipment used in early 1938 trials
which prepared for operations such as a planned attack on Belgium
Visitors can also explore the recently refurbished command hall KS 22
featuring original tables with detailed plans of the fortress
as well as short films that will help bring the history of the site to life
The improvements also extend to the site’s infrastructure
Restored sections of the fortress’s access road now feature original guardrails
Additional informational panels have been installed
helping visitors better understand the site’s complex history and its role in Czechoslovak defense efforts
the current owner of the Bouda Artillery Fortress
has continued to invest in preserving the site
Ongoing restoration work includes the completion of brick walls
The interiors are also being refurbished to restore their original look
funded in part by the Czech-Polish Interreg program
has a budget of approximately CZK 20 million
with CZK 17 million coming from EU funding
The fortress stands as one of the largest and most robust military structures from the 1930s still accessible to the public
With five structures built to the highest defensive standards
the complex features 3.5-meter-thick reinforced concrete walls designed to withstand all known weapons of the time
Beneath the surface, over 1,500 meters of tunnels and corridors connect the site, revealing an impressive scale not seen above ground. More information about the Bouda Artillery Fortress can be found at its official website

Text description provided by the architects. The complex of the former Winternitz Automatic Mills in Pardubice
one of the first implementations of the architect Josef Gočár
Our intention was to integrate the listed building into the new complex
the region and a private person participated financially in the whole event
The aim was to create a new multifunctional urban space for cultural
a kind of triangle of important urban spaces and objects was created
Perštýn Square and the complex of the Automatic Mills
we enhance the dominant frontal portal with the entrance arch and at the same time allow an unobstructed view of the entire site from the side of the historic part of the city
which intentionally have a different character and function
is absolutely fundamental from the point of view of the revitalization of the mills
We confirm the main entrance with a designed square with a sycamore bosquet
where a water channel made of bricks for irrigation is led to each tree
which will be a lively space for holding exhibitions
The proposed public spaces are considered only for the movement of pedestrians
An integral part of the overall concept is the colour solution
The entire complex includes a number of objects of various functions
which were treated by four architectural studios
It was therefore very important to coordinate individual plans together
Our effort was to harmonize all new interventions into a uniform colour that follows the existing brick colour of the Automatic Mills
we wanted to make the entire area more unified
The variety of individual objects with various functional uses should not create a chaotic impression
© Aleš JungmannWhen solving the object
we asked ourselves the question of the truthfulness of the architectural expression
Our answer is recognized construction and material design
Where we see the bricks are actually masonry load-bearing walls
and where there is weathering-steel sheet cladding
there is a non-load-bearing shell of panels
The effort was to design a coherent material design in the interior and exterior
and thus follows the industrial construction of the mills
Brickwork not covered with plaster does not only mean a reference to a monument-listed building
but it is a natural effect of the wall itself
which plays a central role in shaping the space
It is a "bare" wall that does not need to be covered
The same can be said about other structural elements
The entire building tells us what and how it was really made
We colour matched all the materials to the brickwork
almost 30 different samples in the form of cubes had to be cast before the colour could be mixed
We decided to wall these cubes into the brickwork in the entrance hall as a memory of finding the right shade
we used coloured concrete for the structures and floors
The construction of the workshops is based on load-bearing concrete ribs in a grid of 3 × 3 meters
which support X-beams at the edges near the façade
We are helped to bridge the nine-meter spans by one-meter beams with openings that allow the installation of approved distribution systems in the interior
classrooms do not have to have additional internal supports
X-beams are a kind of hybrid perforated wall
which at the same time ventilate the entire building around the perimeter

a growing urban area in the Czech Republic
faced increasing challenges in managing parking spaces effectively
With over 3,800 parking spots divided between residents and visitors
and enforcing rules became progressively more complicated as the population grew and traffic density increased
Before implementing the new smart parking system
the city managed a total of 3,815 parking spaces
divided into 516 spaces for residents and 3,289 spaces for visitors
Parking operations were supported by 91 parking meters
processing approximately 65,000 to 75,000 parking transactions monthly
with two-thirds of payments originating from parking machines
This project became the largest deployment of Smart Parking technology in Europe
positioning Pardubice as a pioneer in transforming urban parking management at scale
Pardubice faced several challenges related to parking management:
The city aimed to improve parking efficiency
and enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors while balancing enforcement and legislative requirements
Pardubice turned to a complex of partners T-Mobile CZ
GOSPACE LABS (the Mother brand of Fleximodo)
The project began with a pilot in Pernerova Street
where 54 IoT Parking Sensors were installed to test the reliability and functionality of the technology
This trial phase ensured that the sensors met the city’s requirements
This trial period proved that the sensors meet the technical parameters
allowing the city to proceed with the modification of the remaining parking spaces
approximately 100 parking spaces should be equipped daily so that
work associated with new signage is completed by the end of September,” said Deputy Mayor for Transportation Petr Kvaš
The successful trial provided the confidence to scale up the system and expand to additional locations
rolling out the system across all parking zones
In historical zones such as Pernštýnské Square
sensor installation adhered to strict conservation guidelines to preserve the city’s cultural integrity
The solution was designed with both technological advancement and the preservation of the city’s cultural heritage in mind:
The new system delivered significant improvements across all major pain points:
the city has a clear overview of which locations are the busiest
and can respond to these situations with better planning
the data enables monitoring the effectiveness of implemented measures
such as new pricing zones,” said Bohdan Jacoš
One of the truly significant benefits of this technology is the continuous stream of information we will receive in real-time
which we can use for planning parking policies
We will be able to evaluate how paid parking zones are functioning without having to commission special analyses costing hundreds of thousands of crowns,” said Deputy Mayor Petr Kvaš
it highlighted areas for further improvement:
The Pardubice case study demonstrates how IoT technology
combined with thoughtful planning and collaboration
While legislative barriers remain challenging
the city has made significant steps forward in improving efficiency
setting a benchmark for other municipalities to follow
Pardubice’s success is a model for cities worldwide
If you’re looking to revolutionize parking management and increase efficiency
Fleximodo’s solutions offer a proven path forward
We are experts in IoT
Our team develops cutting-edge technologies

In their final home game of this Champions Hockey League Regular Season, the Straubing Tigers came from behind to beat Dynamo Pardubice 3-2
After winning their first two games at home decisively
Pardubice banked just one point from their two-game road trip in Germany
All three Straubing goals in the game were on the powerplay. The two teams traded first-period powerplay goals. Mario Zimmermann opened the scoring for Straubing just shy of the period’s halfway mark when his wrist shot from the point hit a Pardubice stick and went up and under the crossbar behind Roman Will
Pardubice tied it on a 5-on-3 with five minutes to go in the opening frame. Robert Kousal below the goal line relayed a pass out front to Tomáš Zohorna, and his quick shot beat Florian Manuel Bugl over the glove to the far side
The Tigers dominated most of the second period but Will stood tall in the Pardubice net, keeping the game tied. In the last minute, however, the visitors came with a mighty push, first ringing a shot off the crossbar and then, with just 25 seconds remaining in the period, took the lead. David Musil’s rising shot through a crowd hit Bugl
but the puck found some space between the goalie’s arm and body and dribbled across the line
Undaunted, the Tigers went back to the attack at the start of the third period and quickly drew a power play, and it took them just 12 seconds to cash in. From the half-wall, Mike Connolly sent a pass out front to Joshua Samanski
Then a penalty to Ondřej Vála with 5:45 to play gave the Straubing powerplay a chance to go back to work. Pardubice almost killed it off but, in the dying seconds of the penalty, Marcel Brandt absolutely leaned into a shot from the point that again hit a Pardubice stick and beat Will high to the stick side
The door opened a crack for Pardubice when Elis Hede was called for slashing with 1:32 to go
and with Will on the bench to make it a 6-on-4 advantage
they came close to tying it in a frantic final minute but just couldn’t beat Bugl
reaffirmed its status as a cornerstone of European motorsport
as it hosted Semi Final 1 of the 2025 European Under 19 Individual Speedway Championship
showcasing the next generation of speedway talent from across the continent
Known globally for its rich speedway tradition and the legendary Golden Helmet race
Pardubice provided a fitting backdrop for Europe’s rising stars to battle it out
Despite challenging weather conditions and heavy rain that disrupted the event
eventually forcing officials to call the meeting to a close after heat 12
the young riders showed exceptional determination and skill
but the racers put on a performance that reflected their passion and promise
At the center of the action was a gripping battle for the top spot between defending champion Nazar Parnitskyi of Ukraine and Mikkel Andersen of Denmark
but it was Parnitskyi who was awarded the win via a ballot
Andersen took a well-deserved second place
and Oskar Paluch of Poland rounded out the podium with 7 points
the top eight riders from Pardubice have qualified for the Final of the Championship
The competition now shifts focus to Semi Final 2
The grand finale is set for August 23rd in Grudziądz
where European best Under 19 speedway talent will battle for the coveted championship title

A Czech method for detecting pancreatic and two other types of cancer has received a patent in the United States of America
The method of scientists from the University of Pardubice
which can diagnose the disease from blood alone
is currently being clinically tested by Lipidica
Collaborating with 14 hospitals across the Czech Republic
the company calls for volunteers predisposed to the disease to help with the testing and gain information about their health
this research has gained significant legal protection in one of the world's most important markets
the unique method has patent protection in other countries
the granting of the US patent was not at all easy
The text of the document itself is 75 pages long
describing the principles of the method for early detection of pancreatic cancer by analysing lipids in blood plasma
The patent also covers the diagnosis of kidney and breast cancer
“I am thrilled that we have obtained the US patent
which opens up great opportunities for us in the future
If the clinical validation has good results within two years
we can expand our non-invasive test for pancreatic cancer outside the Czech Republic and Europe,” says Prof
Michal Holčapek from the Faculty of Chemical Technology
“Obtaining the US patent significantly advances the potential use of screening tests
I believe the clinical study will confirm the validity of the method
Our University’s research could lead to the availability of a screening test for this insidious type of cancer from blood alone,” adds Prof
DEL champions Eisbären Berlin will welcome in-form Dynamo Pardubice to Germany for a clash of two clubs with great European pedigree hoping to live up to their big names on the continent
The visiting Czechs have been the team to beat so far this season
having only let a single goal hit the back of their net while dishing out a staggering 12.
Berlin had a wobbly start to the season on the road but bounced back with a convincing win on their second leg of the trip
With their first home game of the season ahead of them
they'll have the advantage of no travel and a familiar and comfortable environment
Can they become the first team to stop the Pardubice train
With all these question marks around this game
it's no surprise why it's our pick of the round
Berlin have had mixed results to begin their 2024/25 campaign. A 3-1 loss to the Växjö Lakers made way for a 4-1 win against Polish competitors Unia Oświęcim with Berlin playing a much more disciplined game in their second effort
The team from the German capital haven't shown the dominance we expected and despite their recent win
they still have some tweaks to make as they get set to take on their toughest challenger to date
This starts with a lack in point production from their top players
The top scorer on last year's team, Zachary Boychuk, currently only has one point while Marcel Noebels
If Berlin can start to get more from their top players
their chances of claiming their second win become that much stronger
Pardubice are determined to finally make it to the very top where they look to settle down
Regardless of which one of these organisations you'll be cheering for
we're sure to have a game on our hands when they clash!
and cultural provocateur—will be on display in Eastern Bohemia
Pardubice’s Gočár Gallery will host The Lived Dream of Andy Warhol
an exhibition that situates Warhol’s work within the lesser-known contours of his life
A collaboration between the Pardubice Region and Slovakia’s Prešov region
the show draws from the collection of the Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce
a small institution located not far from the village of Miková
Visitors will find a familiar Warhol here—serigraph portraits
and silkscreened icons of American consumer culture—but also a less obvious one
Early pen-and-ink drawings will be exhibited alongside personal effects
and other works that have never before been exhibited in the Czech Republic
Warhol’s legacy is often reduced to a series of well-worn images—Campbell’s soup cans
his factory-floor aphorisms—but the reality was more complicated
he grew up speaking an East Slavic dialect at home and praying with his devout Catholic mother
By the time he arrived in New York in 1949
adopting an Americanized spelling of his name and working as a commercial illustrator before finding his way into the downtown art world
The duality of his identity—immigrant’s son turned celebrity
outsider turned ultimate insider—haunts much of his work
“The famous Andy Warhol was also a deeply anxious
director of the Warhol Museum in Medzilaborce
“He lived between extremes—hyper-visible yet withdrawn
wildly successful yet deeply insecure.” This tension—between Warhol the brand and Warhol the man—is central to the Pardubice exhibition
Curator Michal Bycko sees the show as an opportunity to complicate the mythology
“People tend to forget that Warhol was born into a world far removed from New York’s art scene,” he says
“His roots in Eastern Europe shaped him more than many realize.”
24 at the Gočár Gallery in Pardubice’s Automatické Mlýny complex will show more than 150 Warhol works
The Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce
is the only singular in the world that cares for the legacy of the brilliant artist
born in Pittsburgh as Andrew Warhola in 1928 to partents coming from the village of Mikova near Medzilaborce
The theme of death is often evident in Warhol's work
including in the presented portraits of Marilyn Monroe
The aim was not to create Marilyn Monroe laughing
He multiplied the same motif in different color variations
creating a psychological effect," the museum head Martin Cubjak said

Another multi-goal effort, including three goals in the second period, from Czech challengers Dynamo Pardubice propelled them to their second win on the season as they took down Tappara Tampere 5-1
It was another dominating performance from the Czech side as they've now secured 12 tallies while only giving up one through 120 minutes of hockey
Pardubice once again found themselves up a goal when Martin Kaut scored at 10:30 to give the hosts the edge. The Czech side's leading scorer received a pass in neutral ice before powering his way down the right wing and firing it stick-side past Juha Metsola
The hosts got to work in the second period
eventually putting a stranglehold on the contest as they would go on to find twine three more times
the Finns couldn't find a sustained offensive presence in the final period as Pardubice continued to hem them in their own zone
This pressure would eventually pay off when Robert Kousal manoeuvered his way to the front of the net where he slid one through the pads of the Tappara netminder to make it a 5-0 contest at the 46:23 minute mark
Tappara would eventually get on the board on the powerplay with a goal by Julius Mattila
A fortuitous bounce in the crease gave the Finns some life with just under seven minutes to play
But this would be the only time they lit the lamp as Pardubice's tenacious forecheck never waivered even as they held a four-goal advantage heading into the final seconds
the Czechs would go on to win once again in convincing fashion while Tappara suffered their first loss
Mitchell Balmas’ goal in the seventh round of the shootout gave the Sheffield Steelers a 3-2 victory over visiting Dynamo Pardubice
The Steelers are also off to the Champions Hockey League Playoffs for the first time ever and the star-studded Pardubice team
In a cautiously-played first period, Sheffield had a good chance early with Roman Will reacting quickly to snare Daniel Ciampini’s shot from the point
They didn’t seriously threaten again in the opening period despite two powerplays
Sheffield opened the scoring in the 25th minute after Pardubice turned over the puck trying to exit their zone. Daniel Leavens picked up the puck at the top of the circle and fed Mikko Juusola
who went off the near-side post and in with a quick shot from the hashmarks
After killing off a penalty, Pardubice tied it six and a half minutes later. After the puck went deep in the Sheffield zone following a faceoff, Vít Macek passed out front to Daniel Rákos, who fired it under Matthew Greenfield’s outstretched pad
Pardubice then put on big pressure in an attempt to take the lead
it was the Steelers who would score the go-ahead goal with 4:15 to go in the middle frame
with Balmas skating in and beating Will with a wrist shot over the glove
Pardubice tied it back up in the first minute of the third period. Tomáš Zohorna was first on the puck from a long pass from Andrej Šustr, which put him in alone on Greentree. Zohorna beat the Sheffield goalie to the blocker side.
The Steelers had Pardubice hemmed in their own zone and under enormous pressure for a lengthy stretch late in the third period but were unable to score.
After a scoreless overtime period, Pardubice twice took the lead in the shootout and Sheffield twice answered until Balmas’ game-ending heroics in round seven sent the fans home happy.
This year, 14 people from the University of Pardubice placed among the top two per cent of the most cited scientists in the world. Compared to 2020, the University of Pardubice has no fewer than six more names in the current prestigious ranking of researchers in all fields published by Stanford University analysts.
“I consider such representation a success. It proves that our university has great potential in science and research. I am also happy for the new names of researchers who, thanks to their work, have inspired their colleagues worldwide,” said the Rector of the University of Pardubice, Prof. Libor Čapek.
The published data shows where scientists stand throughout their careers. The information includes categories such as the h-index, the number of articles scientists have contributed to and all articles published since 1960. The scientists, covered by the Scopus database, were compiled by PLoS Biology experts from Stanford University and Elsevier.
The university's other most cited scientists are (in alphabetical order) Prof. Filip Bureš, Prof. Libor Dostál, Prof. Petr Hájek, Prof. Michal Holčapek, Prof. Andréa Kalendová, Dr.-Ing. Jan Macák, Prof. Ivan Mikšík, Prof. Ladislav Novotný, Ing. Roman Svoboda, Ph.D., Prof. Ivan Švancara, Prof. Karel Vytřas, and Prof. Svatopluk Zeman.
Former Danish champion Rasmus Jensen raced to victory at Pardubice’s prestigious Golden Helmet event on Sunday afternoon.
Jensen patiently took the fight to Australia’s Ryan Douglas in the six-rider, six-lap final, pouncing for the lead on lap four, bend two to snatch victory in one of world speedway’s most prestigious open meetings, staged in front of a crowd of circa 15,000 people.
Poland’s Robert Chmiel blazed through for second spot at the end of lap five, with Norwegian SGP2 bronze medallist Mathias Pollestad following up his victory at the DeWalt FIM SGP2 of Poland – Torun on September 27 by taking third place in Pardubice.
Swedish international Timo Lahti – winner of the event in 2023 – made it through for fourth spot, with Douglas ending a still impressive afternoon fifth and German racer Norick Blodorn placed sixth.
Jensen topped the score chart in semi-final group one on nine points, meaning he did not have to take his third heat, with only riders’ top two results counting towards their total.
He finished ahead of Chmiel on eight and Lahti on seven, with the Swede’s race win taking him through ahead of Denmark’s former world No.3 Niels-Kristian Iversen, who also ended on seven. Mads Hansen fell short of the final on six.
Douglas won semi group two on nine, with Pollestad and Blodorn both progressing on eight. Poland’s former world No.2 Patryk Dudek made an early exit on seven, with French international Dimitri Berge on six and German racer Erik Riss scoring two.
It was a tough afternoon for Czech Speedway GP star Jan Kvech, who failed to score in semi group one, failing to finish two of the three heats.
But he made up for that disappointment by winning the consolation final to take seventh spot overall. Kvech defeated Iversen in second, Hansen in third, Berge in fourth, Riss in fifth and Dudek in sixth after the Pole suffered a mechanical failure.
The quarter finals saw Latvia’s Andzejs Lebedevs crash out of the meeting after his left hand was caught in Kvech’s rear wheel. The rider suffered only minor damage to his thumb in the incident but took no further part in the event.

a researcher in Analytical Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the University of Pardubice has won the Czech Brains Jury’s Extraordinary Award for 2024
With the Czech Brain Award (Česká hlava) being the most prestigious research award in the Czech Republic
Michal Holčapek won the award for his research into lipids and discovery of a method that can diagnose the pancreatic cancer from blood analysis only
The 2024 award ceremony was broadcast live by the Czech Television.
The Czech Brains Award is the most prestigious award available to researchers in the Czech Republic
The award has been been presented in several categories since 2002
Since 2007 the Czech Brains Initiative has organized a similar award for secondary-school students called Little Czech Brain (Česká hlavička)
a graduate from the University of Pardubice
received the award in the Doctorandus category for technical sciences
Professor Michal Holčapek has been researching lipid analysis for a long time with special focus on the detection of some cancer types. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive tumours with 80% of the cases being diagnosed too late for the therapy to be effective and thus a 5-year survival rate of less than 10%
Professor Holčapek’s team has focused on lipidomic analysis using mass spectroscopy combined with liquid or supercritical fluid chromatography
which enabled them to develop a number of validated analytical methods for detailed description of lipids in biological samples
it was possible to develop new screening methods to improve early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer
The method is based on lipidomic analysis of blood
which determines the concentrations of more than 150 lipids
Thanks to the data from patients with pancreatic cancer and healthy individuals
a statistical model is created that can determine whether the patient suffers from the cancer with a certainty of 95%. The blood test has a number of advantages: it only requires a blood sample and it is reliable to detect even early stages of cancer and thus diagnose the cancer even before the onset of the first symptoms
similar concentrations of lipids have been observed in other cancer types
showing potential of a universal test for more types of cancer
a spin-off company founded by the University of Pardubice and FONS JK Group
is conducting the clinical trials in cooperation with Masaryk Oncological Institute in Brno
Olomouc University Hospital and another 13 hospitals across the Czech Republic
If the method is proved to be accurate and reliable in clinical testing
it can become a basis for national screening programme for those with high risk of pancreatic cancer
the team hopes to cover other types of cancer and implement a simple blood test into clinical practice
which would increase the chances of patients’ survival

has one of its three global research and development (R&D) sites in Prague
which is also the company’s largest hub outside the U.S
At the core of Pure Storage’s aim is reshaping how consumers and firms handle
The surging trend of artificial intelligence (AI) has made this even more relevant today
and the company now has its eyes firmly set on international tech talent to help drive progress
Pure’s impressive unit and nearly 10-year collaboration with Foxconn
the world's largest contract manufacturer of electronics
further underlines its huge market presence
With a campus area of over 1 million square feet
Pure’s Pardubice production plant ships components worldwide
with train links to Dresden and even China
one-third of all its materials are produced at this plant
For Paul Melmon
“innovation is the foundation” of Pure Storage’s growth and success
wants to “consistently deliver industry-first technologies and solutions to our customers.” To continue doing this
it needs top talent that can support Pure’s rapid recent growth
The company rigorously produces some of its flagship
its special cloud-operating storage-as-a-service model.
as flash storage systems offer many advantages over traditional disk storage
especially when handling random data access
and they use much less power—about one-tenth of what disk systems need—making them more energy-efficient and eco-friendly
Flash storage can also hold more data in less space and is much more reliable
It’s also key to note that hard disks have been evolving for over 70 years
leaving little room for further improvement
with around 30 years of development driven by its use in mobile devices
still has significant potential to become more efficient and compact
Pure is well-equipped to leverage AI due to its decade-long focus on building infrastructure specifically designed for AI applications
released in 2018 in partnership with tech giant Nvidia
ensures it can handle diverse AI workloads
The firm’s experience and early investments have positioned them as a key provider
with major references like Meta's AI supercluster
“Non-customized AI solutions will fall out of favor in 2025
Retrieval augmented generation [which pulls in external information using AI] will become a non-negotiable inclusion for enterprises and it will take over as the adopted method of implementing AI,” Pure believes
Pure’s focus on flash systems increases its efficiency and sustainability
Melmon says that Pure is meeting its environmental
and governance (ESG) goals by creating products that use less energy
Pure’s all-flash data centers consume up to five times less power and rack space than those of competitors
and their FlashArray and FlashBlade products use up to 86 percent less energy than similar solutions
Melmon says Pure Storage is also committed to responsible recycling
partnering with global services to ensure the sustainable handling of displaced technology
This bodes well for the company’s future growth
Czechia’s rapidly growing tech firm has an exciting future ahead of it—especially in the age of AI
Its strong commitment to innovation—investing around 20 percent of revenues into research and development
which is well above the industry average—ensures that the company stays at the forefront of technology
the Prague R&D center—it today has over 600 employees from over 50 different countries—plays a pivotal role in the company’s success
with its engineering team expanding sevenfold since 2020
and a good chance to join the company’s upward trajectory now
Passenger train was en route to Ukraine and carrying more than 300 people when it hit a freight train in city of Pardubice
Four people have died and 26 were injured after a passenger train heading to Ukraine collided with a freight train in the Czech city of Pardubice, officials have said.
“I can confirm that four people suffered injuries incompatible with life,” local emergency spokesperson Alena Kisiala told broadcaster Czech TV.
The crash occurred on Wednesday evening in Pardubice, part of the country’s main rail corridor from Prague, about 60 km west of the town.

Prime minister Petr Fiala offered condolences on social media platform X
saying the crash was “a great disaster” and that “we all think of the victims and the injured”
The interior and transport ministers arrived at the site in the early hours of Thursday
Interior minister Vit Rakusan said most of the injuries were light
and that the passengers had been evacuated into the train station building
Rakusan said that police were identifying the passengers gathered at the train station after the operator
two helicopters and more than 60 firefighters
“The rescue work was complicated because the first carriage was deformed
That made it hard to access the injured people,” firefighter Pavel Ber told reporters at the site
The train had been heading to the western Ukrainian town of Chop close to the border with Slovakia
The timetable shows the train leaving Prague at 1952 GMT and was due to leave Pardubice at 2047 GMT
It was expected in Chop at 0835 GMT on Thursday after crossing Slovakia
An investigation into the cause of the accident was under way
He added that the main train corridor connecting Prague with the second Czech city of Brno and the third city of Ostrava would remain closed for at least several hours
Footage after the crash on news website idnes.cz showed at least one carriage off the track
while police showed on their X social media account a line of emergency service vehicles and a helicopter
A spokesperson for the Railway Administration’s firefighters told Czech TV several were seriously injured
Local fire brigade spokesperson Vendula Horakova told Czech TV the freight train was transporting calcium carbide
Pardubice was also the scene of the worst-ever Czech railway accident in 1960 when 118 people died and about 100 were injured in a head-on collision of two passenger trains just north of the city

there is a chance the Swiss netminder will be seen in action in Davos during the last week of 2024
Monika Majer / RvS.Media
Spengler Cup participants occasionally reinforce their ranks with players engaged in Switzerland. Dynamo Pardubice—finalist last year and returning for this year—might be one of them, according to "hokej.cz." More specifically, they are said to be able to count on the services of EV Zug's Leonardo Genoni
The 37-year-old netminder just recently returned from injury and has made three games since. As a longtime member of HC Davos earlier in his career
it would not be his first time at the tournament
"hokei.cz" also writes that Roman Červenka
who returned to Czechia this past summer after spending eight years in Switzerland
may not be able to participate in the Spengler Cup due to injury

Ahead of us is the season we spend with our families and loved ones every year
These days are of great value not only for the closeness they bring
for shortening the distances between people
we each have a chance to look back and reflect on all the adventures
joys and experiences this year has brought us
and continued personal success to you all in 2025
Markéta Svobodová dreamed of becoming a detective or working in a lab
Now a student at the Faculty of Restoration
her childhood aspirations have come to life in an unexpected way
Markéta wasn't just tasked with restoring it – she also uncovered the identity and beauty of the young girl immortalised on its canvas.
Markéta knew very little about the painting
the piece had languished in the archives of Olomouc
Humidity and improper storage had taken their toll
"It was in terrible condition," Markéta recounts
"It looks like it had been standing in water for some time
which affected all its components – the decorative frame
which had suffered significant losses." Even the wooden supports bore signs of damage
the painting had been struck by something heavy
Her mysterious gaze immediately drew me in
as if she were trying to tell me something," she shares
Those haunting eyes accompanied her through countless early mornings and long evenings
Little did she know how far this unknown girl would lead her
When was the last time you saw the painting
About three days before the end of the exhibition
We created the exhibition to share the painting's story
and I gave guided tours at the museum in Olomouc
walking visitors through our journey together
Restoring it was an incredible experience – one I'll never forget
I was fortunate in every way to have had the opportunity to work on it
It became the focus of my bachelor's thesis
My supervisor had two paintings lined up for me and a classmate to choose from
we played rock-paper-scissors to see who would go first – and I won
My classmate ended up with the other painting
The story of the painting was so extraordinary that it inspired an exhibition titled Sister
which was showcased at the Regional Museum in Olomouc
and there is a possibility it may travel to other venues in the future
It captivated audiences not only with the intricate and meticulous restoration process but also with the almost detective-like journey of uncovering the painting's story
This journey led the student to identify the girl in the painting and piece together the broader context of her family history
"Being part of this incredible process has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience," says Markéta Svobodová
Currently in the second year of her postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Restoration in Litomyšl
Markéta also teaches at a Primary Art School and continues to pursue her own artistic projects.
When the painting first came into my hands
I knew the restoration process would be challenging
My first step was to take swabs from the painting for microbiological analysis to check for any infections
There's always a chance that something harmful could be lurking beneath the layers of dirt and dust
Next was a detailed photographic documentation process
an essential part of any restoration research
It helps us uncover important details about the artwork
I photographed the painting under various types of light: daylight
The final step involved an X-ray examination
The non-invasive analysis provided valuable insights into the painting's materials and structure
it showed that the artist used pigments with metallic compounds
When pigments contain heavy metal-based substances
I immediately recognised the use of lead white
such as taking microscopic samples from the painting
These samples revealed more about the binders
and the intricate layers that make up the artwork
To gather as much information as possible about the painting
This knowledge allowed me to create a comprehensive restoration plan
offering many unique insights into its creation and history
Were you surprised by anything revealed in the survey
The biggest surprise came when I used ultraviolet light
text appeared on the reverse side of the painting
It was faintly visible in daylight but completely illegible
sister of the painter of historical paintings Jos
telling everyone with so much excitement (laughs)
This discovery prompted me to delve deeper into Josef Kessler
but there wasn't much information about him in the literature
I stumbled upon a book specifically about him
who was a devoted admirer of Kessler's work
The book detailed Josef Kessler's life and mentioned that he had five brothers
What puzzled me was that there was no mention of a sister anywhere in the book
This made me question if the translation of the text was wrong
But the lack of any reference to a sister didn't make sense
so I turned to 19th-century records from Loštice
I started combing through the registers to see if a daughter had been born into his family
It was tough – the records were handwritten in German cursive
The lines blurred together as I read them over and over
All I kept finding were mentions of his brothers
It was 2:37 in the morning when I saw Pauline Kessler's name in the register
It was a monumental moment – not just for the painting but also for the historical record
I had disproved a detail in the book and uncovered the existence of a sister who had been completely overlooked
It was incredible to think that Pauline Kessler had finally been found after all these years.
Didn't the restoration take a backseat because of your search for the painter's history
Restoring the painting was the subject of my bachelor's thesis
and I had to complete both the restoration and the research on time (laughs)
What did you enjoy most about restoring the painting?
I aimed to restore the painting as a whole
which included the decorative gilded frame
That wasn't a typical part of my bachelor's studies
so it was both a challenge and a chance to learn new techniques
Once I cleaned off the thickest layers of dust and dirt
I removed the painting from the decorative frame and stretcher to access the underlying layers
That's when I discovered that the central scene had been painted on paper
The entire piece was supported by an additional layer of fabric on the reverse.
What restoration procedures did you perform?
I focused on preserving as many original fragments as possible
I worked to even out the surface and straighten the edges
I reinforced the paper backing with Japanese paper to mend the holes and cracks
I added a new canvas backing to stabilise the entire piece
I tested the solubility of the old varnish and began thinning it
the original colours started to emerge – vivid and breathtaking
so removing it brought the painting back to life
I used a blending imitative retouch technique to restore the areas where paint was missing
seamlessly integrating them with the rest of the artwork
Seeing it restored to its full beauty was incredibly rewarding
What is particularly important when restoring such a work
The key is to restore it without causing any harm to the original
Every intervention I made had to be both aesthetically acceptable and as reversible as possible
This means that if someone in the future decides my work isn't suitable
they should be able to undo it without damaging the original painting
When did you realise the painting might be included in an exhibition?
as I uncovered more about the identity of the girl in the painting
it became clear that the work could serve as the centrepiece of an exhibition
This added an extra layer of responsibility to the restoration
While I could have taken a purely conservative approach
the potential for an exhibition made it crucial to also restore the painting's aesthetic value
It was an amazing opportunity to undertake a more comprehensive restoration that could be shared with the public
Did you eventually uncover the entire history of the painting?
When I identified the girl in the painting
and we began working together to trace the painting's history
We were eager to see how far back we could go.
we found two branches of the family who owned other paintings by him – artworks we were keen to see.
They shared a wealth of valuable information and were incredibly helpful
It turns out they were the same family Hans Klinger had visited when researching for his publication on Kessler.
Did the other family contribute to the puzzle as well?
They had a painting we were particularly interested in
Klinger's book included a black-and-white photograph of a painting of a girl
we suspected it could be "our" Pauline – just older.
The girl in the second painting looked strikingly similar to "our" Pauline
we found Josef Kessler's signature on the painting
along with the year 1860 – exactly ten years after the first painting
I later superimposed photographs of both paintings on the computer
we confirmed that "our" Pauline Kessler is indeed the subject of both works
unmistakable characteristics left no doubt
The family had no idea who was in the picture
This name had been passed down through the family
The painter's style seemed looser and more graceful
"our" painting appeared to have a more representative or formal function.
But you knew right away that the other painting was of Pauline
we were shown a photograph of a woman they called Auntie Zhánělová
we knew Pauline had married František Zháněl at around 38 years old and taken the surname Zhánělová
we had three versions of Pauline Kessler before us at different stages of her life
That's when the whole puzzle came together
And that's when it became clear there would be an exhibition.
It's unusual to create an exhibition centred on a single painting
people were impressed by my restoration work
It's rare to uncover such a significant piece of history through restoration
we began planning an exhibition aptly titled Sister
How did you feel while working on the painting
It felt like solving a detective story (laughs)
Where did you record all the information you found?
I kept a journal to ensure all my notes were in one place
I maintained restoration documentation from the very beginning
I'd jot down quick notes on my hand (laughs)
You speak about your work with such enthusiasm – it's clear you've chosen the right field.
What fascinates me is how it combines so many disciplines
I always say you need to be a little bit schizophrenic in this field – you're part photographer
And that's what makes it endlessly rewarding for me
