Archaeologists have discovered a remarkable medieval artifact: an ice skate made from animal bone
Radio Prague International (RPI) reported that the object was uncovered during excavations in the center of Přerov
a city in the Czech Republic's Moravia region
Experts from the Comenius Museum in Přerov were in the midst of a rescue dig in the basement of a house located on the city's Upper Square when they came across the bone skate while sifting through soil
told Newsweek that the artifact probably dates to the second half of the 10th century or the first quarter of the 11th century
This estimate comes from the fact that researchers found it amid pottery fragments that are characteristic of this period
"It dates back to the time when there was a very important fortress in the area of the Upper Square
It served as a stronghold for Polish King Boleslav the Brave
who occupied Moravia at the time and had his soldiers stationed there," Schenk told RPI
The object is most likely made from a horse bone
it is curved into a tip which has a hole drilled in it and there is another hole at the back
which was used to attach the skate to a shoe or to a wooden sledge," Schenk said
the people who used this item around 1,000 years ago did not use the blades for sports or leisure but simply to get around in the frigid winter months
they would shuffle along the frozen surface with the help of a stick or two
They would also attach the blades to sledges to carry a load of goods across the frozen water," Schenk said
The bone skate is not the first such object to be found in Přerov
a similar artifact was uncovered in the city
ice skates made of cattle or horse bones have been found in other parts of Europe
"The bone skate from Přerov is nearly identical to skates recovered in northern Europe
for example from Birka in Sweden—a very famous archaeological site from the Viking Age—and also from York in England or Dublin in Ireland," Schenk told Newsweek
Do you have a tip on a science story that Newsweek should be covering

Archaeologists from the Comenius Museum in Přerov
recently unearthed a 1,000-year-old ice skate crafted from animal bone during their rescue excavations in the city’s Upper Square
was found amidst pottery fragments dating from the 10th or 11th century
initially comprising several smaller settlements along the branches of the Bečva River
eventually evolved into a fortified square and fortress
under the reign of Polish King Boleslav the Brave
an archaeologist involved in the excavation
the skate’s design is both simple and ingenious
It features a curved shape with drilled holes
This strap would have secured the skate to a shoe or sled
enabling individuals to traverse frozen surfaces with relative ease
Rather than being used for leisurely skating
these bone skates served as essential tools for transportation and trade during harsh winter months
particularly in Viking settlements in Central and northwestern regions like Scandinavia
highlight a shared knowledge of survival techniques among diverse cultures facing the challenges of harsh winters
The Upper Square area was once a series of smaller settlements along the branches of the Bečva River
centered on a fortified square where a fortress would later be constructed
coupled with the necessity of winter travel
likely contributed to the prevalence of bone skates in the region
will be displayed at the Comenius Museum in Přerov Castle
serving as a tangible link to the past for visitors

reflects the experience of everyday prejudice
Mike Reed’s Flesh and Bone is an extreme example
The 42-minute album (out August 25) was inspired by a violent run-in the drummer had with neo-Nazis in 2009
were told by a train conductor to make a connection in Prerov
There they found themselves trapped between riot police and hundreds of skinheads pouring into town for a rally
The band hid out in a secluded part of the station for more than four hours before escaping
The terror wasn’t over: Skinheads on board chased them through the cars
Train employees and a small SWAT team eventually came to the rescue
but the harrowing experience still haunts Reed
discusses using that incident as inspiration for the new piece
which he will perform at his Lake View club Constellation on July 28
We found out after the fact that the rally had been well publicized
And we also found out that there was never any connection to Kraków in Prerov
Transferring in Prerov would be like transferring in downtown Wilmette
except without a big city like Chicago near it
So why did the conductor tell us to get off there
the police were just trying to get us out of there
I did want to thank the officer who helped us
but all I had were some records and a photography book about Chicago jazz
the guy sends a message to our record label’s Myspace page
we’re sorry for such a bad day in the Czech Republic
Thank you for your music,” with a picture of him holding the book
“I wanted to use the experience to reflect on everyday prejudice—to distill it down to something mundane and simple.”
When did you know you wanted to turn the experience into music
I didn’t want to exploit the experience for the sake of making a record
and I didn’t want to make my “black record.” It took a while to figure out a way of doing it that I felt spiritually OK about
I wanted to use the experience to reflect on everyday prejudice—to distill it down to something mundane and simple
If I were to make a piece of music that just reflected the rally in Prerov—like
“Look at me and my grand experience”—that would separate me from everybody else
origin stories—they’re big things we use to talk about the everyday world
so I started by going back and listening to those tracks
I’d pick an improvised nugget and use that to get started
then have my bandmate Greg Ward play it on alto sax so I could hear it
The band on Flesh and Bone is my quartet from that tour
So you wrote the piece with your band in mind
I don’t think there’s a reason to make music without thinking of who’s going to play it
That’s why Duke Ellington had a band on the road with him at all times
He needed to hear the music as he wrote it
with each person playing their specific part
You tapped the poet Marvin Tate to do spoken word on a few songs
Words balance people’s expectations of a piece
all of a sudden they’re not just listening to a jazz concert
It’s almost like putting makeup on the album
in the same way Amiri Baraka is the voice of the New York Art Quartet
Sometimes I couldn’t even understand what Marvin was saying
so I cut up the poems and rearranged them to create the meaning I wanted
Hate groups in the United States were mobilized during the last election
those sentiments have been evolving for some time because of the refugee crisis
race is quite literally what the country was built on
It’s a defining piece of American history
there’s this thought that because we had a civil rights movement
But that’s just a pin on the timeline
How did this experience affect you outside of music
I’m definitely more cautious in Europe—even Western Europe
I’ve been more cognizant of finding music that is truthful
there’s a lot of mythmaking that happens—really intense jazz players with all this crazy philosophical BS behind their music
I’m much more interested in finding honesty in music

International investment fund Carlyle Group has confirmed in a press release the purchase of a majority stake in the Czech Meopta-optika (known simply as Meopta) company
which manufactures optical products for various uses
The U.S.-based investment first will take over Meopta – founded 90 years ago – for about CZK 16 billion
The transaction is subject to regulation and is expected to be completed this year
Meopota produces optical and optoelectronic items for military
Some of the products that it manufactures are binoculars
“We believe Carlyle is an ideal partner for Meopta on the next stage of our journey
with its deep experience in our industry and track record in the growth and internationalization of leading European technology businesses”
includes 140,000 square meters of production space and employs over 1,700 people
According to current majority Meopta shareholder Gerald Rausnitz
Meopta reported a record net profit of CZK 806.4 million – a year-on-year increase of almost 800 percent
Its total revenue that year was around CZK 3.7 billion; annual sales increased by CZK 1 billion crowns and were the highest in the company's history. Better sales were mainly due to increased global demand for optoelectronics and chips used in the semiconductor industry
Same price for 1–3 students learning together
The managing director of the investment advisory team at Carlyle Friedel Drees said that Meopta “offers world-class expertise in the design
and testing of optical components and systems," adding that it was "well-positioned to benefit from strong secular tailwinds.”
Carlyle owns the Phrase (formerly known as Memsource) start-up
which develops a cloud platform for automation and improves the efficiency of language translations
when the company was labeled as one of the top 50 fastest-growing IT companies in Czechia
In late 2022, Carlyle also announced its plans to acquire a majority stake in Czech firm Tescan
which produces electron microscopes and other high-tech scientific instruments
such as 4D scanning. Carlyle has an estimated USD 376 billion (over CZK 8.3 trillion) of assets under management and in 2022 was the world’s sixth-largest private equity firm raised by capital

The jazz drummer’s composition culled from a harrowing experience in the Czech Republic premieres tonight at the Art Institute
to make a connection toward a tour stop in Krakow
where they found lines of police in riot gear
"We thought it was some type of race," recalls Reed
"until one of these SWAT guys stops us
'There's a skinhead rally here today.'"
What happened next isn't easily condensed
but it's the stuff of nightmares: Thinking the rally would begin at the center of town
the racially integrated quartet returned to the train station to take cover
hundreds of neo-Nazi skinheads were arriving for what Reed later learned was a massive
violent protest against Prerov's Roma population
"It was complete confusion from all directions," says Reed
an officer led the band to a makeshift police compound to hide
but a gang of straggling skinheads tailed them and hopped on too
In what could be a scene from a twisted Hitchcock film
Reed and his band found themselves dodging in and out of train cars to avoid the skinheads until two riot police stepped in
Reed and his bandmates learned they were on a train to Warsaw
The connection they’d been told to make in Prerov hadn’t existed in the first place
Reed sat on the experience for years before letting it fuel Flesh and Bone
a jazz-cum-poetry piece premiering tonight at the Art Institute
He attributes the long incubation not only to grasping a life-and-death brush with racism
but the mechanics capturing such a vast day
"If you're an artist and you can't make something out of that experience," he says
The program is based loosely on a Catholic mass
with Coval and Tate's sections miming verse and Reed's music taking the place of prayer
On top of turning that nightmare in Prerov into something rich
Reed says he's used Flesh and Bone to prod some of his questions about race
too: "I have a very middle-class life," says the drummer
"Experiencing this extreme version of bigotry made me [wonder whether] I could battle it on the front lines
I can't imagine the amount of courage that took here."
People, Places and Things premieres Flesh and Bone November 20 at 7. Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S. Michigan. $10–$15. artic.edu

As global automakers compete to bring the first flying car to market
Czech pilot Pavel Brezina is trying a different tack: Instead of creating a car that flies
he has made a "GyroDrive" -- a mini helicopter you can drive
a company producing motors for small flying machines
insists his vehicle is the first in the world authorized to operate both on roads and in the air.
"This is the only road certified flying vehicle I know about," Brezina told AFP in a hangar at the Prerov-Bochor airport in the eastern Czech Republic
"Everyone is trying to make a high-speed car that can fly
but this is a different thing," said the tall
who has 30 years' experience as a pilot under his belt
tanks petrol to his autogyro at a gas station near Pribram City in the Czech Republic
His GyroDrive vehicle is based on a gyroplane
that uses a copter-style rotors to move up and down
and an aeroplane-type "pusher propeller" to go forward
Brezina's company buys gyroplane kits from a German firm
and then assembles and equips them with a system allowing the pilot-driver to switch between a petrol engine propelling the rotors and an electric engine that drives the wheels.
The two-seat GyroDrive has a maximum driving speed of just 40 kph (25 mph) and can take its crew of two on short drives to a petrol station or a hotel
It needs less than 100 meters (110 yards) to take off and reaches a top speed of 180 kph in the air
Brezina during an AFP interview in front of an autogyro at the airport near Prerov City in the Czech Republic on May 17
the pilot only has to fix the main rotor blades along the axis of the GyroDrive and pull out a built-in licence plate to transform it into a road vehicle
Prices start at 1.5 million koruna (57,000 euros
While Brezina is already planning to take his wife
and two children to London aboard GyroDrives
inventors worldwide are frantically working on prototypes of cars that fly
the AeroMobil company says it has received dozens of orders from customers for a flying car expected to hit the market in 2020
"We want to build a vehicle that will not only be able to fly and drive but also fulfil each technical and legal requirement," says AeroMobil CEO Juraj Vaculik
Brezina arrives with his autogyro at a gas station near Pribram City in the Czech Republic
He told AFP that AeroMobil initially plans to produce 500 units of its winged car
which uses a turbo propeller to get off the ground
The AeroMobil is expected to reach a top ground speed of 160 kph and up to 360 kph in the air
with a flying and driving range of some 700 kilometers
Japan's Toyota also unveiled plans to launch a three-wheel flying car dubbed SkyDrive using retractable wings and drone technology
The vehicle is expected to have a top flight speed of around 100 kph
hovering around 10 meters off the ground. It will have a top land speed around 150 kph
Brezina tanks petrol to his autogyro at a gas station near Pribram City in the Czech Republic
reportedly backed by Google co-founder Larry Page
released a video in April of its airborne prototype and announced plans for deliveries of a "personal flying machine" this year
also have soaring ambitions for their flying car prototypes
Brezina got the licence plates for his GyroDrive in March
he flew some 230 kilometres west to an airport on the outskirts of Prague
then drove downtown to have a cup of coffee in the Czech capital's central Wenceslas Square -- and got stopped by the police on the way
adding the police merely checked his papers and did a breathalyser test
Brezina prepares his autogyro at the airport near Prerov City in the Czech Republic
Brezina told AFP he has already been safely flying gyroplanes all over Europe and beyond for the last seven years with a group of friends
"I would liken it to a group of motorbikers
We also travel to other continents where we rent gyroplanes," he said
Brezina said he doubts GyroDrive will take over roads and airways.
it requires a set of certain qualities to become a gyroplane pilot
People watch Brezina sitting in his autogyro
AeroMobil will not be everyone's flying car either because of its eyewatering price tag of 1.2-1.5 million euros ($1.35-1.7 million) per unit
It will rather serve as "some kind of a flying Uber service," Vaculik said
"Our concept is that not many people would own this flying car but many will be able to use it," he added

A bizarre scenario went down yesterday in Přerov, as a naked man walked through the city streets in his birthday suit during the middle of the day
But it’s the story behind the story that makes this one so strange
his mobile phone or boots behind as collateral
he instead left everything else he had on him
And off he went through the city to retrieve the cash to pay his bill and get his clothes back
Reports of the naked man flooded the local police line
Video from Přerov City Police, via iDnes.cz:
But don’t take my word for it. Here’s the official report from the website of Přerov City Police:
a witness informed line 156 about a completely naked man on the street
A further five people reported this occurrence as well
A motorized policed patrol was sent there and the sharp eye of the camera system quickly identified the Adamite walking happily on the sidewalk making a phone call
and he stated that he left the clothes as collateral at a restaurant
He left naked to get money from another one to pay the debt
He eventually paid the debt and put his clothes back on
which calmed down the pedestrians and drivers
“Since his conduct bore the signs of a crime
the case was handed over to state police for further investigation.”
Construction of the first section of the Czech Republic's long-awaited high-speed railway line is slated to begin next year
Transport Minister Martin Kupka announced the news at a conference organized by the Association of Construction Entrepreneurs on Friday
The first section of the high-speed line to be constructed will run from Brno to Přerov
work on the section between Brno and Břeclav will begin in 2026
and the Moravská brána section will start by 2028 at the latest
Work on sections connecting to Prague is expected to begin around 2030
“Next year we will start the construction of the first high-speed railway in Moravia,” said Kupka
who added that special efforts have been taken to ensure the new line begins construction on time
A new system has been introduced where the remuneration of Railway Administration officials is tied to the speed with which they process all necessary requests and actions to start the construction of high-speed lines
Kupka’s announcement of the start date came as a surprise
as in March he had indicated that construction would begin in 2026
include lines from Prague to Wrocław and from Pilsen to Munich
as well as a branch from the main Dresden route to Most
The total cost of constructing the basic high-speed railway infrastructure in the Czech Republic is estimated at CZK 800 billion
Long-term plans for the high-speed line are primarily aimed at the Czech capital
the construction of the Prague section of the line will start in 2030
Kupka emphasized that regional construction should "put pressure" on Prague to accelerate the preparations for connecting the tracks to the metropolis
the Railway Administration will also build a central dispatching workplace for remote control of traffic on high-speed lines in the Czech Republic
This new building will be constructed near the existing central dispatch center in Prague's Balabenka area
Suburban trains in Prague are already overcrowded
and the construction of high-speed lines should help to alleviate this
New underground lines called New Connection II or metro S
“The year 2030 can be the milestone when the people of Prague will see construction activity on the line that will bring high-speed trains to Prague,” Kupka stated
The minister added that the capital's current governing coalition supports the construction of the high-speed railway
and the city is already approving the necessary changes.
