Researchers from the Czech Republic and Brazil recently shared data that seems to point in this direction
The study was presented at the recently held Congress of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE)
The researchers wondered whether pigs in a stable group form preferred associations
relatedness and social dominance influence social preference
The background of the study was that if indeed pairs of preferred partners can be identified
it might be a way to ensure better welfare in pigs
domestic pigs often experience disruptions in the social bonds
at weaning or when being moved from one group to the next
The group observed a relatively small group of 24 Přeštice pigs
The animals were of mixed gender and consisted of pigs from 3 litters
They had access to indoor and outdoor areas
the animals were followed for 33 hours over the summer of 2016
Both situations of rest and of activity were taken into account
The team of scientists noted that there was only a minor effect of gender on proximity at rest
with pigs of the same gender associating more
the researchers found that pigs form ‘non-random associations’
which seemed to be mainly determined by factors other than gender
They added that additional research will focus on other drivers
Also they stressed the importance of considering the behavioural state when examining individual relationships

SHARON – Torah scroll number 655 has traveled far – from a village synagogue in Czechoslovakia
to a London synagogue and Temple Sinai in Sharon
It escaped destruction during the Holocaust
and then survived neglect at a Prague museum before it came to the Sharon synagogue
Now the 250-year-old scroll’s odyssey will meet a fitting end Sunday
as the congregation celebrates its restoration – and a return to use in worship services
“It’s being brought back to life,” said Temple Sinai member Robert Soffer
one of those who organized the project to put the parchment scroll back in condition to be unrolled and read
A “completion ceremony” will be held at 9:45 a.m
Guests will include Rabbi Kevin Hale of Leeds
the scribe who lettered and re-stitched the scroll
the chairman of the Memorial Scrolls Trust in London
where the scroll had been kept as one of 1,564 rescued from Czechoslovakia
The scroll will be brought into the synagogue in a procession with nine other Holocaust scrolls
including one from Temple Beth Am in Randolph
The ceremony will be led by Rabbi Joseph Meszler
Scroll 655 has been on permanent loan to Temple Sinai since 1991
As with all other Torah scrolls – which include the first five books of the Hebrew Bible – it’s hand-copied
Rabbi Hale said the stitching style and ink condition show it was created around the time of the American Revolutionary War
Originally owned by the synagogue in Prestice
it was kept in hiding after hundreds of Jews who lived in the town were rounded up by the Nazis in 1941
and sent to the Terezin concentration camp 100 miles away
that scroll and others were taken to the Jewish Museum in Prague
when – amid the Cold War – the Czech government sold them to British buyers and they were taken to London’s Westminster Synagogue for safekeeping
Since then more than 1,000 of the scrolls have been loaned to synagogues in the U.S
They would be returned only if the original synagogues were revived – which no one expects
Ohrenstein said the Temple Sinai scroll is one of 14 from Prestice
Two are in Israel and one remains in London
Orhenstein said a restoration like Temple Sinai’s is “very special,” since it bears witness to “our survival and beliefs.”
the Temple Sinai scroll could only be displayed
because much of the Hebrew script had faded or flaked away
The sinews that held the parchment sections together were rotting
Rabbi Meszler wanted to repair the scroll soon after he arrived at Temple Sinai a decade ago
wouldn’t it be a great to restore it and use it?”
said it was too fragile and would cost too much
and Rabbi Hale said he thought he could do it
He’d just been certified by the Museum Scrolls Trust
including the one on display at Temple Beth Am in Randolph
The Temple Sinai scroll is too worn and fragile in places for a complete restoration
but Rabbi Hale re-inked faded and missing letters
and stitched the sections so the scroll can be unrolled
“Anything else like this would be in a museum
It’s taking its place among more ordinary scrolls.”
the Temple Sinai congregation participated in multiple ways – fundraising
Now Rabbi Meszler said everyone is ready to watch Rabbi Hale ink the final three letters of the fifth book
on Sunday – an “Amen” to the whole project
Rabbi Meszler said Scroll 655 will be unrolled for high holiday readings and other special occasions
and can be ceremonially carried for bar and bat mitzvahs
“Seeing it is a very powerful feeling,” he said
“It’s something other people have touched and used
They were reading it and studying it 100 years before the Holocaust
Draw to conclude the UEFA Youth League group stage
The Barça Under 19A side tied 1-1 with Viktoria Plzen with nothing riding on the match as they were group winners whatever the result
and vice-president Rafael Yuste from the stands
Barça put on a good performance in their final group stage game
The game in Stadion TJ Přeštice began frenetically
Dani Rodríguez scored a superb free kick after five minutes to put the Catalans 0-1 up
however Deml quickly levelled the score for the home side just six minutes later
The first half saw debuts for first year Under 19 player Pau Prim and the young Under 16 player
in the process becoming the third youngest ever to play in the Youth League for Barça after Lamine Yamal and Ilaix Moriba
The pace of the game dropped after the initial flurry
but Barça were dominating possession and gradually getting closer to a second goal
Lamine Yamal having a good chance to retake the lead
The only downside was an injury to Joan Anaya just before halftime
No goals in the second half but Barça were still in control
Luzzi and Lamine himself having the clearest opportunities to break the deadlock
and an Under 19A side that completes a great UYL group stage with 14 from a possible 18 points - unbeaten with four wins and two draws

We sat down for a chat with the chef-owner of Sansho…
Paul Day is the driving force behind butcher’s shop ‘The Real Meat Society’ and Asian Bib Gourmand restaurant ‘Sansho’
He took some time out to tell us about them and explain his plans for the future.Where did it all begin for you?I was born in Staffordshire and by age 17 was an apprentice at a butcher’s shop and quickly progressed to owning my own business
I then had this notion that I wanted to cook and that London was THE place to learn
I started out working in a supermarket in Chinatown and from there secured jobs at various Chinese restaurants and finally at Nobu – all of which helped me develop my love of Asian cuisine. What brought you to Prague?Initially I was asked to help set up a restaurant here but that didn’t work out – by which time I had met my wife
How did The Real Meat Society start?I opened the butcher’s shop seven years ago (almost 2 years after Sansho) and it was much smaller than it is now
I could source all the meat for both the shop and the restaurant knowing its provenance and being assured of the quality
How has the shop grown? When I opened The Real Meat Society no other butcher was sourcing their animals directly from the producer
Over the years we have worked with farmers and owners of smallholdings who tend to rear breeds native to Middle Europe
with the advice and encouragement of the Czech National Veterinary Service
we became a fully certified bio/organic butchery
We are still the first and only one in the Czech Republic and it has been one of my proudest achievements
We also recently enlarged the shop so we have more preparation and storage areas
and space for some tables where people can enjoy dishes such as homemade hotdogs
In time we would like to produce our own cured meat and charcuterie too
And what are your plans for Sansho? With the new larger space at The Real Meat Society
I took the difficult decision to close my other business
so that I could focus on one shop and one restaurant
We have some very exciting plans for Sansho
with a refurbishment and a new kitchen installation currently taking place; it will re-open in February after a one month closure – exactly 9 years since we first opened
We never sit still and already have plans for research trips to Thailand
as we really want to become stronger and achieve greater things
It’s important that we enjoy the job that we do and that we all keep learning
the chefs also spend at least one day a week at the shop performing butchery and serving customers
We caught up with the Czech-born chef-owner on a recent visit to Prague

Leading automotive interiors supplier International Automotive Components (IAC) has announced recently its new Prestice 2 production facility in Prestice
is fully operational and has started producing its unique
lightweight injection molded inner dash insulation for superior interior acoustical performance for two premium European OEM customers
With the future start of a major door trim program
the facility is expected to reach full capacity in 2018
The new 18,000-square-meter (193,750-square-foot) facility went from concept to start of production in just eight months
The plant is set up following the IAC Production System (IPS) lean and quality principles and also currently produces trunk trim and dash insulation components for the 2016 European Car of the Year
IAC’s Prestice 2 plant is located approximately 2 kms (1.2 miles) away from the Prestice 1 facility
which is the company’s European Center of Excellence for Overhead Products
The greenfield site produces IAC’s industry-leading injection molded dash inner
which provides an estimated 40 percent weight reduction compared to a conventional vacuum-formed product
The IAC injection molding process provides exact
forming of lighter inner dash insulation without compromising acoustic performance and also delivers better mass distribution to match the acoustic hotspots within the component
IAC also has developed the customized injection molding resin to fulfill the high quality requirements of the two premium customers
Injection molded dash inner insulation complements IAC’s offer of lightweight acoustical insulation products
which also includes the industry first sprayed polyurethane (PUR) inner dash technology
PUR sprayed inner dash insulation with back foaming reaches weight reductions of about 20 percent coupled with a superior acoustic performance
PUR sprayed dash inner insulation has been in production at IAC Spartanburg
where it just debuted on the new luxury SUV Maserati Levante
“IAC is a world leader in injection molding and operates more than 1,000 machines around the world
Leveraging this extensive product and process development expertise
we have been able to offer our customers unique lightweight insulation solutions and ensure flawless production starts” said Marcus Nyman
