discovered near the town of Budyně nad Ohří
This collection dates back to the Middle Bronze Age
with one axe dating to the Early Bronze Age
The discovery was initially made about a year ago by a metal detectorist who brought the items to the Podřipské Museum for further examination
confirmed that the items were part of a hoard
a collection of objects intentionally buried
Trefný highlighted three potential reasons for the burial: votive offerings to deities
a reaction to danger such as an enemy raid
or temporary storage by a producer or trader
This analysis may help identify the cultural context of the hoard
microscopic photography is being used to examine the axe blades for signs of ancient smithing techniques and use-wear patterns
Trefný emphasized the historical and scientific value of the find
“If we were to express the price in contemporary currency
the historical and the scientific value is much higher than the financial value.”
The exact location of the discovery remains confidential to prevent illegal looting and further disturbance
The artifacts are currently undergoing conservation and are expected to be displayed at the Podřipsko Museum in early 2025

Deutsche Bahn has unveiled plans for the German segment of a high-speed rail line designed to link Prague with Dresden
including a 30-kilometer tunnel under the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory)
The ambitious project aims to significantly reduce travel times between the Czech and German cities
cutting the current 2.5-hour journey to just one
A newly released visualization showcases the proposed route
including the modernization of the existing section from Dresden to Heidenau
where trains will enter the Ore Mountains Tunnel
The tunnel will emerge near Chabařovice on the Czech side
The video also highlights the inclusion of an emergency tunnel designed to facilitate passenger evacuation via buses if necessary
has drawn opposition from local municipalities along the proposed route
Border-area residents have filed over 600 complaints
including calls for canceling the project and finding alternatives
particularly in the northern city of Ústí nad Labem
construction is expected to begin no earlier than 2032
with the project slated to take approximately 12 years to complete
On the Czech side, the Railway Administration has divided the high-speed line into three sections: the VRT Podřipsko
featuring a terminal in Roudnice nad Labem; the VRT Středohorský tunnel under the Český městředohoří; and the VRT Krušnohorský tunnel
which will connect to a terminal in Ústí nad Labem
high-speed trains will reach speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour
while locomotive-hauled trains will operate at up to 230 kilometers per hour
The route will allow passengers to travel from Prague to Ústí nad Labem in about 30 minutes
offering a dramatic improvement in regional connectivity
The project represents a significant step in strengthening cross-border transportation links between the Czech Republic and Germany
include lines from Prague to Wroclaw in Poland and from Pilsen to Munich
as well as a branch from the main Dresden route to the Czech city of Most
The total cost of constructing the basic high-speed railway infrastructure in the Czech Republic is estimated at CZK 800 billion

A team of archaeologists in the Czech Republic have uncovered a remarkable hoard of weapons and jewellery
The discovery was made during an excavation survey in the town of Budyně nad Ohří, located 40km northwest of Prague
where researchers stumbled upon a treasure trove of bronze artefacts
Researchers believe the artefacts were intentionally buried
though their exact purpose remains a mystery
such hoards could be used as votive gifts or gifts to the deities,” archaeologist Martin Trefný told Radio Prague International
the items might have been buried to "some incident that happened in the village”
The third theory suggests that the site could have been a "storage pit of some producer or trader," says Trefný
The Bronze Age bracelets discovered at the site were worn as forearm ornaments much like they are today
while the pins were likely used to fasten clothing or style women's hair
While the artefacts could be worth "millions of crowns" - with a million Czech crowns equating to nearly €40,000 - the historical and scientific value far exceeds the financial value
The find offers a rare glimpse into life in central Europe during the Bronze Age and will help enhance our understanding of the craftsmanship of casters at the time
Just last month, a team of archaeologists from the University of Hradec Králové (UHK) discovered a prehistoric burial along a highway in the Czech Republic’s eastern Bohemia region
The monumental burial mound dates from the 4th millennium BC – making it one of Europe’s earliest known funerary structures
Invisible above ground prior to the excavation
two central burials were revealed during the dig: two human skeletons
and the second with five chipped artefacts
Researchers believe the orientation of the skeletons and offerings provide valuable information about the burial customs of the time
The burial mound was partially disturbed by a younger pit
suspected to be another burial site – although more analysis is needed to confirm this – despite no human bones being found
The artefacts will soon go on display at the Podřipské Museum in Roudnice nad Labem
Using metal detectors, scientists discovered the buried treasure about 35 miles northwest of Prague
the combined items could be worth as much as $42,500
“Axes could have been used as tools or weapons
The latter function also applies to the spearhead
and pins served either to fasten clothing or
Lucie Heyzlová/Český rozhlas/Podřipské Museum
Trefný and the rest of his researchers are still unsure why the hoard was buried where it was
or gifts to the deities,” Trefný told Ancient Origins
The third theory is that it could be a storage pit of some producer or a trader.”
The exact location of the hoard is being kept private to prevent amateur treasure hunters from desecrating the site
The found items will be subjected to “extensive conservation treatment,” after which they’ll be put on display for the public at the Podřipské Museum
though more valuable hoards have certainly been discovered in the Czech Republic
the historical and scientific value of this most recent discovery easily surpasses the others

The latest film version of “All Quiet on the Western Front” presents a harrowing indictment against a senseless war
While the German recruits were promised they would be welcomed home as heroes after a quick victory
history proved otherwise as World War I turned into a brutal stalemate
This third film version of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel
which can currently be streamed on Netflix
was filmed in and around Prague and in the Ústí nad Labem Region with additional scenes shot in Prague’s Barrandov Studios
It is the first version of the story to have a German director
but viewers can switch to English dubbing if they prefer
The two-and-a-half-hour antiwar film currently has a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes
Germany has submitted it for consideration for the Oscar for Best International Feature
The Czech Film Commission cites an extensive list of shooting locations: Buškovice
Prague just makes a brief appearance before the battle scenes start
four enthusiastic young men forge a signature so one of them can join the German army
The scene was filmed just outside the German Embassy in Prague
The iron window grates and stone bollards at the Valašská Street palace formerly owned by the Lobkowicz family are easily recognizable
The same scene also includes a brief glimpse of nearby Thunovská Street by the stairs leading to Prague Castle
As the singing soldiers march off into the Battle of La Malmaison in France a few minutes later
the spire of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Buškovice in the Ústí nad Labem Region can be seen in the background
The military infirmary and compound they arrive at is a farm in Postoloprty
which was once owned by the Schwarzenberg family
In the comments section of the venue’s Facebook page
the current owners point out that some of the damage was made with CGI
and that a lot of planning and work went into creating the war-torn look
The farm is actually in slightly better condition
and is also now being restored to its former glory
The fancy halls of the Supreme Army Command where the diplomat portrayed by Daniel Brühl
tries to convince the German military leaders to surrender are at Sychrov Castle
The carved dark-wood paneling interiors and the distinctive pointed archways in the courtyard can be seen at about 35 minutes into the film
Soldiers steal a goose from the same farm twice in the film
once just after the first battle scene and later toward the film's end
The farm and surrounding fields are in the village of Hředle
The lack of food is a running theme in the film
The balcony where a general appears to address the troops just before the final climax is at Hořín chateau
The building has a distinctive curved exterior and courtyard
The same building is seen very fleetingly earlier in the film
Wenceslas at Roudnice nad Labem at about one hour and 48 minutes into the film
and the church is seen again as soldiers file past just after the general gives his balcony speech
The trenches, where the bulk of the film takes place, were dug near a former military base at Milovice. The same base was used in George Lucas’ World War II film “Red Tails.”
“In Milovice … we found a very good area with good depth in the background. These days it’s a sports airport, which closed its operations temporarily for three months so we could shoot there,” production designer Christian M. Goldbeck told the Czech Film Commission
He also said that digging began in January 2021
Hundreds of meters of trenches covered the area of two football fields
Director Berger told Newsweek that the main reason for coming to Czechia was that Prague is very welcoming
was that he found unrenovated locations that matched the story
where the actual historical locations would be
Prague just felt like the right place to go,” he said
Oddly, this is not the first time “All Quiet on the Western Front” was filmed in what is now the Czech Republic. While the Oscar-winning 1930 version was filmed in Hollywood, a 1979 TV version starring Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine was shot in then-Czechoslovakia
The American and British co-production earned a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Made for Television and an Emmy for Outstanding Film Editing for a Limited Series or a Special

"Each of the national cultural monuments newly declared today is exceptional in its value
urban planning or landscape design," said Minister of Culture Martin Baxa
The current "set of national cultural monuments" was "another important piece in the mosaic of our historical knowledge and connections," Baxa added
Among the notable landmarks included on the list is the Augustinian monastery in Brno where Gregor Johann Mendel
a naturalist and the so-called father of modern genetics
Moravský Krumlov in Znojmo, which currently houses Mucha's "Slav Epic," also appears on the list. The Baroque Castle Jezeří, a highly endangered monument that is an attractive filming location

The art provocateur group Ztohoven has claimed responsibility for cutting a giant Pac-Man into a rapeseed field owned by Agrofert
the conglomerate associated with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš
Police have been investigating the damage to the field in the village Rovné in the Ústí nad Labem region
“Police officers from Roudnice nad Labem are investigating the damage to the rapeseed field in the area of the village of Rovné, and at the same time ask potential witnesses for help. A part of the field with an area of about seven hectares has been cut by an unknown perpetrator, causing damage of over CZK 350,000,” Ústí nad Labem regional police spokeswoman Šárka Poláčková said
The artwork was created on the 41st anniversary of the release of the original Pac-Man game
It was also International Biodiversity Day
similar to the business model of conglomerates
“Pac-Man ate subsidies and he also managed to perfectly eat concepts such as capitalism or socialism
when the right and left hemispheres are irreconcilably promoting their [ideas] without the ability to seek a common language outside the categories of the right-left worldview,” Ztohoven said on Facebook
whom we ourselves let become fully established and were not able to set functional barriers for
The ‘4 ghosts’ who have to stop Pac-Man on the field have failed
If a player guided by sufficient motivation to eat everything chooses a suitable strategy
he proceeds to the next levels of the game
even though we thought that the previous one must have been the last
“Pac-Man eats away individual components of the ecosystem in the landscape
leaving behind a monocultural toxic desert
and the ability to deal with crisis situations without the intervention of a central planner
Pac-Man has perfectly hacked the system of democracy and is constantly abusing it
Pac-Man has based its business on taxes that devour everyone in its playing field
Pac-Man throws up critical thinking and serious science
Pac-Man can't deal with individuals who refuse to share the playing field with him,” they said
Agrofert has confirmed that they own the land
and the matter is now in the hands of the police
“I can confirm that this plot of land is owned by Agrobech from the Agrofert Group
I don't want to comment on the motives of the creators
but it is striking how far some people are able to go
They unequivocally committed a crime in which property was damaged in the order of hundreds of thousands of crowns
It is up to the police to investigate the matter,” Agrofert spokesman Karel Hanzelka said
He also denied the criticism that Agrofert monopolizes state subsidies for the crop
“It is not true that all rapeseed in the Czech Republic belongs to Agrofert and that it occupies all agricultural land
Czech farmers grow rapeseed on approximately 16 percent of arable land
only 5 percent is accounted for by Agrofert's agricultural companies
If we draw some agricultural subsidies for cultivated land
we have them exactly the same as all other farmers in the Czech Republic,” Hanzelka added
Ztohoven has staged several acts that blend art and politics. The most famous perhaps was flying oversize red underwear in place of the presidential flag at Prague Castle in 2015. A year later, the Prague District Court decided that no crime had been committed
The Today Show first aired its broadcast “Lobkowicz Family Return to Bohemia” featuring Sarah Ferguson
taking a guided tour of Nelahozeves Castle with Prince William Lobkowicz
a descendant of the Czech noble family forced into exile in 1948 following the nationalization of the family property
The video is remarkable for telling the story behind the Lobkowicz family’s fairy-tale return to Prague to regain its collections and properties
while offering a behind-the-scenes look into the family’s not so fairy-tale home life in a modest Prague apartment
Eagled-eyed viewers will also spot some footage of celebrity tourist, Gene Hackman, in the video. (Film geeks take note, Wes Anderson would later use a replica of a 17th-century boar painting on view in the castle’s hunting room in a scene from his 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel)
After the fall of the communist government
Harvard-educated Lobkowicz and his wife Alexandra returned to the Czech Republic to manage the family’s property which includes castles in Nelahozeves
as well as wine cellars and a brewery in Vysoký Chlumec in Příbram
The most precious objects from the family castles all over Bohemia
were eventually brought to the ancestral Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle
where they were made available to the public in the family museum after more than 50 years

an international center for the study of European cultural heritage
in partnership with universities throughout the world
The Lobkowicz name is also attached to the development of the Dvořák House and Music Academy
a museum dedicated to renowned Czech composer
who was born in the village of Nelahozeves in a Baroque house adjacent to the castle

Mount Říp should be on any bucket list of places to visit in the Czech Republic
Not only is it an ancient pilgrimage site (“What Mecca is to a Mohammedan
Říp is to a Czech”) its 459-meter summit offers seemingly endless views of nearly one-third of Bohemia
April 6-7 marks the official opening of the spring season for trekkers interested in making the journey; a series of events and tastings will commemorate the occasion at Chata Říp
a small cottage atop the mountain that tradition says all Czechs should climb once in their lives
Here are some facts and legends about the storied cultural monument:
Říp is the spot where the nation’s history began: according to legend
settled here (Říp derives from a Germanic word for “elevation.”)
Čech is said to be buried in the nearby village of Ctiněves
-Rising up out of the Central Bohemian flat lands at the confluence of three rivers
the mountain is comprised of the remnants of a millions-of-years-old volcano and was bare until the 19th century
-One of the oldest structures in the Czech lands
the Romanesque Rotunda of Saint George (est
It houses an important stone sculpture of St
George with a dragon by Bernard Otto Seeling
-A number of forested trails lead to the mountain which is located 20 km southeast of Litoměřice
Visitors can approach from the north on the red trail from Roudnice nad Labem
The area also encompasses a number of bike paths
-In May of 1868 the foundation stone for the newly built National Theatre in Prague was taken from Říp

The Bohemian Sand Pink (Dianthus arenarius bohemicus) is an approximately 15 cm tall perennial with white flowers growing in dense clusters
It is an endemic species of Pleistocene gravel-sand terraces near the town of Roudnice nad Labem (North Bohemia)
In the late 1990s there had been only two hundred old clusters in the Kleneč National Nature Monument (NNM) and the only cluster near the village of Kyškovice at a substitute site
Preservation of the species for Czech flora was at least uncertain
In 1999 bulldozers removed humus level in part of the Kleneč NNM to gravelous sand substrate
This revolutionary intervention has opened a way to save the Bohemian Sand Pink for world’s flora
Many little seedlings appeared on uncovered sand substrate the following year
The population has been still growing there
the Action Plan for Bohemian Sand Pink in the Czech Republic was approved by the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic
The objective of the Action Plan for Dianthus arenariussubsp
bohemicusis to ensure long-term stability of a Bohemian Sand Pink (hereinafter BSP) population at the only original site – the Kleneč NNM and to establish a stable population at the substitute site near Kyškovice
There are six main areas of supporting measures:
1.Habitat management includes annual mowing
removing of competitive natural tree seedlings and expansive grasses such as the Wood Small-reed (Calamagrostis epigejos)
disturbances of soil surface and also mechanized removing of humus layer
2.Species management includes sowing and deposition of seeds in a genetic seed bank
3.Monitoring involves monitoring of populations
4.Research measures propose study of a) BSP’s population biology
b) effect of substrate on morphological variability in the BSP
c) genetic variability in BSP’s populations
d) relation between the BSP and phytophagous invertebrates
e) occurrence of insects in the Kleneč NNM
5.Education and promotion of the species and its Action Plan
6.Other measures involve mainly providing the substitute site near Kyškovice with legal protection
implementation of the Action Plan has brought some positive points:

but this will be their first Wildwater World Championships
“I’m excited to see what I can do in this type of boat
I have been paddling it on the river in Muskoka
but this race will be really different.” The three boys will also have the chance to race in the team event which will be held on July 8th
They will start together and the time stops when all three cross the finish line
The goal is to go fast and stay fairly close together
McKay says “Racing as a team will be fun.” Beaumont and Parry will be in Europe from June 9th where they will be racing in the European Junior Slalom Cup races every weekend
Parry and McKay will also be representing Canada and competing at the Junior and U23 Slalom World Championships in Poland
Parry will be competing in the kayak as well as the canoe disciplines at both of the World Championship events. When asked which he prefers he says: “It depends on the day!”
We wish these athletes the best of luck in their European racing endeavors
