During his multi-day visit to the Zlín region
Ambassador to the Czech Republic Bijan Sabet visited the facility of U.S
semiconductor manufacturer onsemi in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm
the company announced a planned multi-year investment totaling up to $2 billion (around 44 billion CZK) to expand its chip production and establish a state-of-the-art vertically integrated silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing facility at the Rožnov plant
One of the largest planned foreign investments in Czech history
this expansion would position Czechia and the Zlín region as a European hub for chip production and high-tech industry
Onsemi has operated in the town beneath the Beskydy Mountains for almost three decades
Following his visit to the Rožnov facility
Ambassador Sabet stated: “Onsemi is a great example of a U.S
company making a real and positive impact on Czechia
This investment would help realize the economic potential of this region and also strengthen the U.S.-Czechia relationship.” Ambassador Sabet further praised the company’s development efforts
leveraging brownfield investments in the existing industrial complex to bring additional high-tech manufacturing
“Silicon carbide is becoming increasingly fundamental as global demands for power and energy-efficient solutions continue to rise
This strategic investment would underscore the Czech Republic’s commitment to innovation and position the broader European region at the forefront of critical technologies enabling advancements in electrification and artificial intelligence
We are thankful for Ambassador Sabet’s support of our planned investment
which is crucial in driving these transformative global megatrends forward,” said Aleš Cáb

The Czech town of Roznov pod Radhostem was best known for its rum-drizzled sweet pies and an open-air museum showing off historical wooden houses
Then came an announcement that stirred the sleepy backwater
chipmaker ON Semiconductor picked Roznov for a new $2 billion manufacturing hub in June
The past few weeks have seen a flurry of visits by property developers
the head of a local university and government officials followed around by television crews.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
The interest isn’t surprising given the investment will be the biggest by a foreign company in the Czech Republic in three decades
But it also reflects how there’s more riding on the plan to make a new generation of microchips than the prospects of a corner of central Europe

will invest up to CZK 46 billion to establish a silicon carbide semiconductor factory in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm
This expansion marks a significant development for the Czech economy
with government incentives currently under discussion
Onsemi Vice President Aleš Cáb highlighted the company’s collaboration with local schools to train engineers
emphasizing that Moravian talent will play a vital role in the production process
which encompasses everything from technology development to customer support
"The entire process from technology development to chip design and production to customer support will take place in Rožnov," Cáb told Seznam Zprávy
While specifics of the government incentives are yet to be determined
they could potentially cover up to 27.5 percent of the investment amount
negotiations with the European Commission will take place
with construction slated to begin by spring 2025
The first products are expected to roll off the production line in 2027
This investment represents one of the largest foreign direct investments in the Czech Republic
surpassing Hyundai's historical automotive investment
The Rožnov factory will not only strengthen local production capabilities but also position the Czech Republic as a key player in the semiconductor industry
crucial for sectors such as electric vehicles and artificial intelligence
produce silicon wafers that are later processed in Moravia
The new facility aims to centralize production by handling everything from silicon carbide powder to final chip casings domestically
