floods are affecting 207 locations in the Czech Republic
with extreme conditions at four river sites
Czech leaders will hold an emergency meeting at 6 p.m
Charitable organizations have already begun establishing funds for aid to victims and communities impacted by Storm Boris
According to the Minister of the Environment
the torrential rainfall is a one-in-50-year event
with hundreds of millimeters of rain falling since Thursday
the equivalent of three months’ worth of rain in just three days
primarily with the restoration of the houses and apartments of the most vulnerable who cannot help themselves," said Marek Štys
director of People in Need’s flood team which has activated help in most regions
“We are currently mapping needs with mayors and crisis teams
We sent 15,000 missing bags for the construction of flood barriers to Olomouc
which have already arrived in Šumperk and Jeseník
We expect to continue delivering material aid as needed.”
The Donio platform is welcoming donations as well
we will provide safe alternative accommodation
and help with the purchase of necessary equipment
The money will also go towards health care and other key needs."
While volunteering in the aftermath of the floods will be important to helping restore affected cities and communities
doing so requires careful coordination and adherence to safety guidelines
Officials say it's important to wait until the situation is safe before volunteering

The Czech Republic was hit by wide-scale flooding across the country this weekend
with the most severe conditions seen in the Moravia-Silesia Region and the north of the Olomouc Region
Large-scale evacuations were required in Krnov
100-year peak flows were observed; thousands of residents had to leave their homes and some villages were completely cut off from the outside world due to flooded roads
The Katerinky housing estate in Opava was inundated when the river overflowed
Firefighters were using boats to rescue people who had not yet left
The mountain village of Mala Upa in the eastern Krkonoše was inaccessible due to landslides
Extreme flood emergencies were declared for two places in South Moravia
and water was overflowing from the Husinec and Rimov reservoirs in South Bohemia
Around 260,000 households in the country were without power on Sunday morning due to the bad weather
with hundreds of faults reported on high-voltage lines
around half of these had been reconnected; the majority of those still without power were in the Moravia-Silesia Region (76,000 households) and the Olomouc Region (29,000)
There was also widespread disruption on roads and railways
with transport operators urging their passengers to postpone their journeys if possible
Firefighters in the Olomouc Region had evacuated about 1,900 residents as of yesterday afternoon
and had to use boats in some rescue operations
The inhabitants of Bohuslavice and Lestina in the Sumperk area were evacuated overnight on Saturday due to flooding on the Morava River
Several hundred inhabitants of Ceska Ves in Jesenice and neighbouring Pisecna also had to leave their homes
many residents refused the evacuation order
leaving hundreds of people in flooded houses
a town of 23,000 people in the foothills of the Jeseniky mountains
was completely cut off from the outside world
Regional Governor Josef Belica told CTK that the region and the fire service had sent an aid convoy to the town with food and drinking water
brought by Tatra trucks that can drive through deep water
we are ready to evacuate the entire town,” the governor added
Krnov’s Deputy Mayor Miroslav Binar (ANO) estimated that 70-80% of the town was under water
and the situation was much more serious than previous devastating floods in 1997
He said water was approaching the designated evacuation centres
which would themselves have to be evacuated
adding that the city could no longer effectively help its residents
part of the D55 motorway in the Zlin Region was closed due to flooding on Sunday morning
The D1 motorway was impassable at Bohumin in the Karvina area
and was already closed around Ostrava by Saturday night
Dozens of sections of railways were closed around the country
where railway transport was almost paralysed
At a press conference yesterday following a meeting of the Central Flood Commission
Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Interior Minister Vit Rakusan asked citizens to heed calls to evacuate during the current floods; Fiala told CNN Prima News later that the situation should not be underestimated
a helicopter was rescuing people who had refused to evacuate from rooftops and attics
He appealed for the public to be reasonable and not cause unnecessary work for firefighters and emergency rescue services
He said that a precautionary evacuation is better than people needing the help of a rescue helicopter in bad weather conditions
as there was a great demand for emergency services in many parts of the country
He said the same applied to those attempting to enjoy the stormy waters by engaging in leisure activities such as paddleboarding
Firefighters and police officers rescued a man from the Vltava River in Prague yesterday who wanted to swim in the swollen river.
Environment Minister Petr Hladik (KDU-CSL) said that four people were missing
and three in the Jeseniky area who were unaccounted for after their vehicle was washed into a waterway
The Central Flood Commission has asked citizens who want to show solidarity with the affected areas to direct any material donations through the Czech Federation of Food Banks
The firefighters currently do not have the capacity to coordinate aid
According to Agriculture Minister Marek Vyborny (KDU-CSL)
bottled drinking water is starting to run out in the affected areas
villages along the Velička River around Hodonín were partially flooded
there was also serious flooding of roads and properties at Podhradí nad Dyjí near Znojmo
Antonín Tůma from Povodí Morava said that the heavy rainfall in Austria and in the Dyje basin
causing sharp rises in water levels in the tributaries of the Vranovská Dam
Grolich noted that precipitation in the vicinity of the Vranovská dam was almost twice that predicted by meteorologists on Saturday morning
Water managers will gradually increase the outflow from the Vranovská dam to 150 and then up to 220 cubic metres of water per second
According to estimates from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ)
Veselí nad Moravou and Břeclav will start receding only on Thursday
firefighters are building preventive barriers in Veselí na Moravou and strengthening the dam of the river Svratka in Vojkovice (Židlochovice)
According to Povodí Morava’s estimates
and outflow from the reservoir will therefore increase to around 90 m 3/s
which could cause minor overflows into gardens in Jundrov
The Svratka river in Židlochovice was declared to be at the third level of risk
the river could rise to a maximum height of 530 centimetres
the river should have reached its peak yesterday morning
Rajhradice and Opatovice were the main settlements at risk
Anti-flood bags were produced by firefighters and volunteers at the Brno Exhibition Grounds
more anti-flood bags were made than needed
then shared with other municipalities in South Moravia
according to the forecast of meteorologists
rain will continue in the south of Moravia
“It doesn’t look 50 millimetres anymore
but it could be up to 30 millimetres,” added Grolich
the area is completely saturated and even minor rainfall could bring us problems
We must also be prepared for the fact that a large amount of water will flow from Jeseníky into the Morava River
a large amount will flow from Bečva.”
police officers had to rescue a 36-year-old man who fell into the Svitava river at Mlýnské nábřeží when the river’s bank suddenly gave way

the European manufacturer of the F2 and CT series of aircraft
is increasing production at its new Sumperk factory in the Czech Republic
The LSA manufacturer noted that the first two production F2-LSA models are now heading to U.S
According to Flight Design
the order list currently stands at more than 100 aircraft
and production is increasing to support four F2 aircraft per month by the end of 2023
The company said this was made possible in part by support from the Lindig Group
“The kind and timely support from the Lindig Group
the staff in Sumperk and Kherson [Ukraine] has made this possible
It takes a lot of commitment to create and sustain an aviation business,” said Daniel Guenther
and especially [Lindig Group CEO] Sven Lindig
He has stood beside us through the most difficult times.”
Not the least of these challenges was retrieving four CTLS airframes from the factory in Kherson and getting them to customers in Europe
The company noted that the completion of airframes will continue through 2023 and then move to production of new airframes by a manufacturing partner
Flight Design is anticipating an increase in business as a result of the FAA MOSAIC (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification) project
The Flight Design F2 entered the American market in 2021 and its design continues to evolve
The F2-CS23 is approved as a European Union Aviation Safety Agency type-certified GA aircraft in Europe
and the validation process has progressed with the FAA
It is expected that the F2-CS23 will be popular with flight schools and in rental fleets
“The F2 in its current S-LSA form can carry a much larger payload,” said Tom Gutmann
“We expect to increase the payload of the new F2-LSA aircraft that are now being delivered under MOSAIC and think there’s even more that can be done within MOSAIC.”
The company is also continuing the development of the Flight Design F4
is equipped with a Rotax 916 turbocharged powerplant and designed to carry four adults
The F4 passed a design review earlier this summer and is moving toward the prototype stage
The company noted the F4’s systems and tooling are identical to the F2
Different types of machine learning technology and one engineer’s determination to go outside his technical comfort zone helped save Sandvik division Dormer Pramet from an operational standstill during the pandemic
At Dormer Pramet
a new press at the company’s production facilities in Šumperk in the north of the Czech Republic couldn’t be set up because of restrictions imposed in the face of COVID-19
Engineer Ondřej Šebesta stepped into the breach
learning how to master hologram technology and launching the machine himself with the help of high-tech goggles and remote assistance.Ondřej Šebesta used different types of machine learning technologies to master the multi-axis press.
and the Czech Republic had just recorded the highest COVID-19 mortality rate in the world
The country was ordered into a strict lockdown
and a nationwide ban was imposed on all nonessential travel
Dormer Pramet’s Šumperk plant had just received a complex new multi-axis press
the operators needed in-person training from the Germany-based dealer
The COVID-19 travel restrictions put a stop to those plans
who had only just started at the Šumperk plant
took it upon himself to remedy the machine learning problem
“The press was a big and important investment for us,” Šebesta says
it was costing us lost production.” Šebesta
explained how he approached the IT department to try to find a way to do the training remotely
The IT team suggested using a brand new hologram technology
HL2 essentially projects holograms that respond like real objects when a user “touches” them
move and zoom in and out of the virtual elements
These holograms can be tagged to real-world objects
creating a true augmented-reality experience
The HL2 feed can also be displayed remotely
allowing others to interact with the user’s virtual reality display
by marking objects and dropping pins and other instructions
Šebesta had never encountered HL2 before
but he spent many late nights reading up on the technology
He also spent his free time testing the lenses – so much
that he began experiencing some of the side-effects of mixing the real and the virtual for too long: headaches
He overcame this by flying his own first-person-perspective drone during his breaks to “reset” his eyes
But before actually manipulating the press
Šebesta had a few HL2 initiation sessions with the supplier and set up a remote PC that allowed the supplier to connect to the machine and take over the controls if necessary
Using remote hologram technology is about as close as you can get to real in-person training
This is something we will continue to invest in in the future
Here Šebesta’s HL2 training proved doubly invaluable; a tool had been shipped inside the machine that would have caused considerable damage had it not been detected
Equipped with the goggles and connected to the supplier
and after completing the remaining maintenance tasks
“If it hadn’t been for Ondřej Šebesta the start of the machine operation could have been set back weeks
or even months,” declared Jared Mason
a representative for Dormer Pramet’s global communication department in the United States
“It goes to show how a crisis can push people to break through virtually all preconceived limits of creation and innovation
“Using remote hologram technology is about as close as you can get to real in-person training,” Mason adds
“This is something we will continue to invest in in the future.”

Flight Design and Aeroprakt officials said their manufacturing facilities in Ukraine were continuing to make aircraft
German company Flight Design employs nearly 200 people at an aircraft production facility in Ukraine
Flight Design USA President Tom Peghiny said the firm is deeply concerned about its employees
The Flight Design factory is located in Kherson, a city of 300,000 people in the southeastern portion of Ukraine, where Russian troops took control after overcoming days of resistance in a spirited defense by Ukrainian defenders. Russian tanks patrolled the streets on March 2, Reuters reported
though Kherson remained the only city under Russian control. It was unclear whether and for how long the Flight Design factory would remain in operation
Workers had continued building airplanes as the Russian military encircled the city
Flight Design USA has about 25 airplanes on order
there are about 10 to 12 airframes at the Kherson plant,” Peghiny said
the airframes would be sent to Flight Design’s final assembly and completion center in the city of Šumperk in the Czech Republic
25,000-square-foot site suitable for use as a production and paint shop
and will use that in the future,” Peghiny said
Šumperk is also home to the F2 and CT series’ completion center
and is a European Union Aviation Safety Agency certified and approved production organization
and flight testing is also conducted in Šumperk
Additional engineering work is done at the company headquarters in Eisenach
Flight Design is offering to move its Ukraine staff and their families to the Šumperk facility
Peghiny said that the Kherson plant will function as long as conditions allow
tooling currently remaining in Kherson will have to be replaced by newly manufactured tooling for use in Šumperk
but it may take six to nine months to build
“This is so sad,” Peghiny said
“We were all geared up and really rolling until the invasion.” Even so
Flight Design said it would have its usual presence at the upcoming Sun ’n Fun Aerospace Expo in Florida and Aero Friedrichshafen event in Germany
“We’re hoping for the best and preparing for the worst,” Peghiny said
a manufacturer of light sport aircraft in Ukraine
said he spoke with factory officials who said they plan to remain on the job
“They told me they’re going to keep making airplanes until they can’t,” he said
although my next two airplanes will likely have to be shipped from Poland because the port of Odessa is closed.”
and sells about a dozen two-seat Aeroprakt A22s and A23s a year
Business has been extremely good recently and he’s currently sold out through the end of 2022
“Sales have been great,” he said
I’m more concerned about the people over there than the airplanes at this moment.”

80s and 90s was a magic crucible of the blues
and one of its presiding warlocks was the harmonica player
who has died aged 74 following a heart attack
In a West Coast blues milieu that boasted formidable harmonica players such as William Clarke, Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza and Rick Estrin, Harman more than held his own. But what set him apart from many of his contemporaries was the skill and wit of his songwriting. BB King once told him: “You’ve got a real pretty voice
but you’re never going to become James Harman the artist if you don’t quit doing my songs and other guys’
Harman became an expert composer of what he called “stories about the human condition told through blues songs”
compared him to Raymond Chandler and John D MacDonald
and it took a decade for his recording career to get under way
gathering momentum in 1988 with the album Extra Napkins
which earned him several nominations for WC Handy blues awards
Over the next 30 years there were a dozen albums for Black Top
His sense of how blues should sound and look was central to his aesthetic. At recording sessions he insisted on old-school tube microphones and amps, and even vintage recording tape. “We tour Europe,” he told Powell in an interview for Blues Access magazine

During the past year Harman had been undergoing treatment for oesophageal cancer

Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence
big data and machine learning are increasingly important to the manufacturing industry
Sandvik has partnered with IBM on several digital key projects
How will digital activities impact traditional manufacturing
work has begun to incorporate Industry 4.0 into its production processes
one of the world’s leading data analysis companies
“These include using large amounts of data to map the value chain throughout every department of our production unit in Sumperk
and incorporating computer software to identify defects in tools during the early stages of manufacture,” says Radim Bullawa
advanced algorithms and statistical methods were used to track
determining how the item moved through the production unit and creating a network model of the entire factory
This model described how the machines interacted with each other and showed how any process disruption
“It identified critical points in the process where small issues can cause major inefficiencies later,” says Radim Bullawa
“All were ranked by severity to help focus on where improvements were needed to optimize performance and achieve the greatest impact.”
All these digital elements and projects aim to enhance our existing high standards of manufacturing
they looked at the definition of the metrics that quantified issues such as quality
maintenance downtime and compliance with the production plan
These metrics were again analyzed to identify further areas of operational change and suggest specific improvements
Dormer Pramet is using an IBM inspection station
This is during the first phase of the production process and can help improve the quality of its products at the very beginning of the manufacturing process
“An automatic machine image recognition is performed to locate and identify the type and severity of the defect,” added Bullawa
“This detection uses artificial neural networks – a computerized model that improves performance over time
its success depends on the accuracy of the recognition.”
This accuracy is influenced by the number of defect images that are input into the system and their variability
Adding as many examples and as much information as possible will continually help to teach the machine what is right and what is wrong on a given product
This not only increases the accuracy of recognition but helps to detect less obvious defects as well as reducing false alarms and identifying problem characteristics
“All these digital elements and projects aim to enhance our existing high standards of manufacturing capabilities
built on a century of knowledge and expertise,” says Bullawa
“We will use them to further improve our production processes
reduce waste and advance the service provided to customers.”

it had been exactly 50 years since the first house called type V was completed in a village close to a Moravian town of Šumperk
Under a widely used name “šumperák” it soon became a phenomenon
and as the most common new house it flooded Czechoslovakia
Its success is undoubtedly based on the period demand for individual housing and the possibility to build it relatively cheaply and easily in DIY manner using commonly available materials
The exhibition is based on the book by Tomáš Pospěch and Martina Mertová
It unfolds several variations of the šumperák phenomenon interpretation possibilities
It aims to uncover the variation series of the šumperák itself and at the same time to outline its complexity
and author of the project explains: “My project started with a simple fascination by the series as such
There were built more than 4,500 of these houses
though.” The exhibition thus also reflects on the question of originality and mass production in architecture

The ice-hockey club HC Palacký University has one big story among its players
Martin Žižlavský lost his leg below the knee in 2017 – but he returned to ice hockey and became a valuable member of the team
In this exclusive interview for HC Palacký University and hokej.cz
he talks about his return after the injury
Martin has been into many sports since he was a child
He lived for ice hockey and sidecar motocross
his sports career came to an abrupt end for some time after an injury at school ski training
It happened on the bobsled track…” says Martin Žižlavský about his painful accident that involved his classmates
Maybe it even brought some of us closer together,” he admits
The Šumperk native had a premonition for a time before the accident
I had a bad feeling something was going to happen,” he says
I realised things didn’t turn out all that bad
So I recovered and started my fight to become an athlete again,” says the current player of HC Palacký University and the Šumperk Dragons junior team when he reminiscences his battle four years ago
How did you cope during the first days after the surgery in the hospital
For the first three or four days I was in an induced sleep
When I woke up… For the next week or so I was spaced out because of all the medication
Did you let in depression and dark thoughts
But you have to pull yourself together and keep fighting
How did you handle it after you returned home from the hospital
I didn’t go anywhere for two or three weeks
Then I went to school a few times using crutches
I didn’t see my classmates and teachers for a long time
What was your greatest motivation – to play sports again
I didn’t play ice hockey for three years and I wasn’t sure I’d still be able to
How long did it take to get used to the prosthesis
they told me that some people would learn to walk with it after a week or two
I jumped down from the parallel bars and we went home
(He laughs.) I was able to walk right away… I don’t know
I have to go all the way to Uherské Hradiště to see him
I tried to go with the guys to a practice in Uničov
You probably went there because of your teammates
You miss those guys a lot… I was so happy when I came back to the teams of guys from HC Palacký University and the Šumperk Dragons
My comeback is due to having adjusted the weight on my foot
Last year I got a new prosthesis for a higher weight category
It turned out I can get back onto the rink… Well
You have also started playing matches since the summer
How would you compare it to your last matches before the injury
It’s not so easy to score against a big goalkeeper…
I actually played the first match for the junior team in Šumperk
I’ve been training with the guys from Šumperk since last Christmas
and it took me some time before I got used to it
So have you been preparing more since Christmas 2019
I started training with them during the Christmas holidays
The idea was to get going at least until New Year’s Eve
I got hooked and joined their training sessions until the end of the season
Did you prove to yourself that anything is possible
I don’t even realise I’m so handicapped anymore
Is there any change in how you look at life now
Did you believe that you would return to ice hockey right after the accident
But I learned that Craig Cunningham (a former NHL player – Editor’s note) also lost his leg just like me
I watched videos where he was learning to skate again
He had a conventional prosthesis with a skate blade
It’s probably a lot about the specific prosthesis
Do any of the spectators know that you are playing with a prosthesis
Maybe at those times I stumble easily and so on
Maybe in acceleration I don’t lag behind some guys
but I don’t have such stability in the curves
Even when it comes to sidecar motocross… It’s not perfect but you have to learn how to deal with it
Putting more weight onto the right prosthetic leg is not ideal
you never know exactly what’s going to happen and where it might take you
I try to use the left one as much as possible
Why did you start playing in the University League
I have been following the University League for a few years
And some guys who used to play for Šumperk – Dominik Hajšman
and Michal Dohnal – joined the Olomouc team
so I thought I’d give it a try when I got back to ice hockey
What did your new teammates say about your handicap
you have two options: either you will deal with it somehow
and you’ll be able to live with it and make fun of yourself sometimes – or you will fall apart
In the first league match for HC Palacký University
It was a very emotional experience because when you score after such a long time… It feels good
(He smiles.) After three and a half years… My teammate Zdeněk Formánek brought me the puck – as a trophy to keep
Was it the most important goal in your career
I don’t know… It was rather the most pleasant one
I don’t know if I have any goals in hockey
I don’t know how far I can get with that leg… Everything is worse after that long pause
I want to have fun and then I’ll see what’s next
I hope I’ll study many more years at the university and still play here
You first returned to sidecar motocross after your injury
One drives and the other balances it so that you can make turns and such
It’s about the interaction between the two people
Many people don’t even know that such a sport exists
Quite a few people are active in this sport
You can go to a bobsled track and you never know how it might turn out… (He smiles.)
And has it happened to you that you fell off
and there was a meadow full of people above the track
it’s just that my leg came off and I need to put it back on.” Such moments are hilarious
it’s never good to get on the rink with fear
Sometimes there are technical problems that prevent us from racing
because sometimes the races took place far away
we only managed to attend about half the races
You are riding an old motorcycle because you don’t have a new one
We’re not at a level where we can move forward
Is it possible to get into the national team
Every country is represented by three crews
But I think it would take us quite a lot of time to get to that level
There’s no way I could make a living in ice hockey
I assume that apart from ice hockey and sidecar motocross
And I often go cross-country skiing and hiking
but there is not much time for it because of school and everything else
there has always been a way to do what I want to do
At the beginning of this school year we did the breaststroke with legs…
(He laughs.) I was so good at it I almost drowned
they don’t even see it anymore and just take it as normal
Would you like to motivate other physically challenged people with your active lifestyle
And not only them but also people without disabilities
They could be motivated by this motto: If he can do it
What are you studying at Palacký University
But it’s good to combine physical education with another field
but I don’t know how I’ll be able to manage it timewise
You have returned to ice hockey and motorcycling
you’re studying at the university… Are you living your dream
(He smiles.) You could describe it that way
