over 600 cadet athletes are descending on Teplice
the future champions are gathering to test their abilities
many within the top 10 in the world ranking list
Czechia have been hosting this Cadet Cup event since 2009
In the following year the EJU camps commenced and have been running successfully ever since
There is a notably strong presence from Australia
but Europe have some incredibly powerful contenders
including that of Anna OLIINYK-KORNIIKO (UKR)
who not only medalled in the Cadet European Championships last year
but then went on to take silver in the U23 European Championships
demonstrating she can already run with the more senior competitors of the -70kg category
Kristyna KASZPEROVA in the +70kg category is the highest of the world ranking list at #9
However she is one of 65 entries from Czechia hoping to earn some hometown glory and move up in the ranking lists
The two day event will run on the 6th and 7th of April. Follow the live draw on JudoTV.com at 20:00 local time on Friday 5th of April

It is the eve of the Teplice Cadet European Cup and with an astronomical entry of almost 1000
there is an especially exciting buzz surrounding the event
ensuring smooth and efficient running for our future superstars.
There will be athletes from 39 nations and four continents all battling
will likely have many contests on the road to gold
Among the vast entry are four world number ones
Dusan GRAHOVAC (SRB/-81kg), Nikita YUDANOV (UKR/-90kg), Abil YUSUBOV (AZE/-66kg) and Sinem ORUC (TUR/-63kg).
surprised her team mates and her opponents alike when she came out blazing in 2022 to become the Cadet European Champion
and then again at the World Championships she confirmed it wasn’t just a lucky day
This weekend will be her first time back in competition since her world title achievement in August and we are certainly looking forward to seeing her back on the tatami
From the host nation, there are 56 athletes representing, and the top ranked of them all is -70kg Stepanka HOJDAROVA
she is striving for the gold and maybe will have that extra push with the support of a home crowd
Her last performance saw her in the final block in yet another highly populated tournament in Zagreb but narrowly missed the podium.

GM Frederik Svane emerged as the winner of the Teplice Open
the event dating back to 1922 that has been held yearly since 2006

in the second-largest Czech spa town Teplice
The event brought together 218 players from 33 federations
The seventh seed Frederik Svane got off to a flying start winning five straight games
but his main rivals – the rating favourite Shant Sargsyan
Evgeny Romanov and his older brother Rasmus Svane – trailed by just a half-point
Frederik pulled off a crucial victory with the white pieces
Frederik Svane (pictured below) finished with two draws and came clear first with 7.5/9

As if there wasn’t enough for the Italian federation to celebrate at home in the Lignano Junior European Cup
they also managed to top the medal table in the Teplice Cadet European Cup
As we start approaching the major championships for the younger athletes
it is certainly looking great for team Italy
Now while the Italians did manage a fantastic collection of four gold
Despite recent events, the cadet team showed their strength on the tatami in Czech Republic, scoring two gold, two silver and three bronze medals. In the -81kg category, Igor TSURKAN (UKR) has strong results to back his potential for the Cadet European Championships event
and now back to back gold medals in Zagreb and Teplice are promising
The same can be said for Michela TERRANOVA (ITA) in the -52kg category. Following her home win at the Lignano Cadet European Cup in February, she once again stole the show and secured a second gold. Once again for Terranova she was forced to face her team mate Gaia MASSIMETTI in the final
the athletes are already participating in the training camp and are getting in much needed practice with many others across Europe
Nobody expected such a high participation of cadets during the Easter period
We can say that the Cadet European Cup Teplice 2023 is the biggest tournament of the EJU
For example there were 110 participants in the -66kg category and the winner had to win seven fights
For today’s interview we have chosen a young Slovakian cadet
Not only is this a great feeling for the young athlete
to take yet another cadet European cup gold medal
but she actually defending her 2022 win here
Tománková now claims seven cup gold medals
a Cadet European Championship silver and Cadet World Championship bronze
and she is yet to miss out on a place on the podium
The next tournament for me will be the Junior European Cup in Bielsko-Biala and I am looking forward to the EYOF
I would definitely like to take part in the Cadet World Championships in Zagreb
At the moment I would like to compete in the -40kg
but I am aware that I will be moving up to a higher weight category
I will be competing not only in the higher age category but also in the higher weight category in Poland.
The support for talented athletes in Slovakia is very good
I study at a business academy where I have an individual study plan
My home club is the Pezinok Judo Club and it makes sense that my coach is my father
who is the current vice-president of the Slovak Judo Federation and I have to admit that he is very strict with me
Do you have any free time for other hobbies than judo
I dedicate it to school or going to the gym
There seems to be a bright future for this young superstar
Join us for day two of the Teplice Cadet European Cup tomorrow at live.ijf.org
Just like in the -66kg category, on the second day of the Cadet European Cup in Teplice, we saw a medal duel between Serbia and Azerbaijan in the -81kg final. This time it was Dusan GRAHOVAC (SRB), the world ranked number one and Aslan KOTSOEV (AZE)
Both competitors met for the first time and had no special tactics prepared for the match
The Azerbaijani competitor Kotsoev won this final
There are usually about 50 judo players in my weight category at the Azerbaijan Championships
How does it feel to beat the world number one
My goal is to make it to the World Championships this year and this is a good step towards that
Of course I have the highest goals in mind
And it was natural for my father to get me to train as well
What message would you give to young judo players who want to be successful in the sport
Simple advice – there is only hard work in the form of honest training to get to the top
What do you like to do when you are not training
and we wish him well in his bid for the Cadet World Championships this year
It was a tremendous day to finish off the most populated event in the EJU calendar with a final entry of 920 athletes competing
and many will now stay for the training camp to gather even more vital randori before returning home
Kotsoev was the sixth gold medal for the team of Azerbaijan who finished top of the medal table
The home nation could be proud of Maria KOSNAROVA in the +70kg category who managed to take the only medal for the Czech Republic

have been placed around the Czech town of Teplice to honor the memory of Jews murdered during the Holocaust
concrete blocks with plaques with the names of the dead
were laid on Monday outside houses in which Jews had lived
Before the war around 5,500 Jews lived in Teplice
There are only 3,900 Jewish people in the entire Czech Republic today
Such memorial stones can be seen dotting streets across Europe
The concept was developed by German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992 with the idea that passersby actually stumble over them and learn something about those who are no longer here
Israeli Ambassador Daniel Meron stated that the stones should remind residents of the need to combat anti-Semitism and racism while Mayor Jaroslav Kubera said that without memory bad things can happen
In September 1938 we were forced to move to Prague and then we were deported by train to Lodz in Poland,” said Frantisek Lederer
whose parents lived in the city before the war
"I am glad that the Teplice Jewish Community tries to remember these events in this way.”
"The event attracted high attention of the public
We hear from Jews who had their families in Teplice once,” community head Oldrich Lata said
Czech club FK Teplice officially announced the extension of the loan of Egyptian striker Mohamed Yasser from Al Ahly for an additional season
The Czech club said in a statement on its official website: “We have agreed with Al Ahly to renew the loan of Mohamed Yasser for another season.”
Yasser will remain with Teplice until the end of the 2024/ 2025 season
completing three seasons in the Czech Republic
said: “We are pleased that Mohamed Yasser has become part of our team and that we have managed to renew his loan.”
Yasser moved to FK Teplice in February 2022
initially on loan with the club’s reserve team
before his loan was renewed and he was promoted to the first team
The 22-year-old has made 20 appearances with FK Teplice this season
scoring five goals and providing two assists
including two goals against Czech giants Sparta Prague
Teplice currently occupies the ninth position in the Czech league standings with 24 points

the organizer of one of the biggest open tournaments in the Czech Republic
was forced to make a U-turn after facing heavy criticism and intervention by FIDE as he initially refused to accept registrations from Ukrainian adults
In an interview with the NSS chess website this week
Kirs said: "The current political situation does not favor chess
and the tournament is deprived of grandmasters from Ukraine
After being asked by International Master Tadeas Kriebel to clarify on Facebook
"My personal opinion is that Ukrainian men of military age should fight with a weapon in hand on the battlefield for their country and not in peace with wooden pieces in hand on a chessboard for money."
and they should be prepared for possible deployment and mobilization
Many of Ukraine's top players have already fled the war-torn country with their families
while athletes still there can get permission from the ministry to compete abroad for major tournaments."
In another interview with Czechia
"I shouldn’t have said that we can’t accept Ukrainian grandmasters
but I should have said that we can’t accept players—men in the military age of 18-60 years."
One Ukrainian minor is currently registered to play the Teplice Open
Chess.com is aware of at least two grandmasters who were denied registration
The statements led to a wave of reactions after Kriebel shared them on Twitter
The refusal to accept Ukrainian players eventually led to a reaction by FIDE. Its CEO Emil Sutovsky told Reuters that the organizer had been warned.
The organiser changed his attitude upon getting a warning from FIDE
We were very clear that Ukrainians can't be discriminated (against)—and they will be invited," said Sutovsky
Kirs confirmed to Chess.com that he had retracted his comments
I will gladly accept them in the tournament," he said
The Teplice Open takes place in the Czech city on June 10 and currently has 21 grandmasters among 236 players registered. It has received funding from FIDE through the Open Aid project
Three years after his visit to Adršpach
the Belgian rock climber Sean Villanueva O'Driscoll has returned to this sandstone tower climbing paradise in the Czech Republic to attempt the so-called Teplice Trilogy in a single day
In his own words it's "a beautiful challenge"
and equates to climbing the three most striking offwidth cracks of the area: Údolní on Hláska Tower
Prásknutí bičem (Whiplash) on Věž Jardy Berana Tower and Muší spára on Lahvičk Tower

“Never give up!” Those were the first words Dayyan BOULEMTAFES (FRA) said with a big smile on his face when he left tatami after winning the thrilling -55kg final in Teplice European Cadet Cup
This was my first European Cup I was selected to represent France so I desperately wanted to prove my selection
Although I participated in two cups last year I was not a member of the French national team then
During lockdowns I improved my strength and endurance
Whenever it is possible I practice in different clubs to have as many partners as possible
Today I wanted to show that the selection of the French coaches is correct
On his way to the final he defeated every opponent before the time limit including Matija JEREMIC
But Adam MAJOR
is one of the greatest hopes of Hungarian judo
He scored waza-ari and dominated the fight
Dayyan was penalized twice and the result seemed to be clear. However in this desperate situation Dayyan mobilized his inner strengths
Although the fight seemed to be lost I did not lose my spirit
I felt that I could throw Adam and at the very last moment of the regular time I eventually succeeded to equal the sore with a sumi-gaeshi
The final then went in golden score with Dayyaan being more active
I believed that I could throw Adam again so I kept attacking and I am glad that my effort paid off when I scored the second waza-ari in the third minute of the golden score
Fighting spirit is a crucial factor in judo competition
No match is gone till the referee says sore-made
Dayyan demonstrated today in Teplice that heart is the strongest muscle of the champions
We should watch Dayyan carefully in Riga in August
finishing the event with an incredible 6 gold medals out of a possible 16 and reconfirming the lead on the cadet World Ranking List for judoka such as Abil Yusubov
who dominated the -66kg category from pole position
The Azeri team were among almost 30 delegations who stayed in residence for the training camp which followed the event
The weekend saw cadets competing in 3 other continents too
Luanda hosted the African Cadet Cup in Angola while Almaty organised the Asian Cadet Cup in Kazakhstan and Cuba mirrored the African
All results can be found at live.ijf.org for both past events and those coming up
Croatia and Poland are the centre of attention this coming weekend for seniors and juniors respectively

As we reported in Part I of our article on the Teplice Open
the event was won by the Icelandic GM Hannes Stefansson after he edged out his rival Evgeny Postny on the tie-breaks
The third place was taken by the Russian GM Alexander Rakhmanov
The top three prize winners of the tournament: (from left) Stefansson
GM Sipke Ernst of the Netherlands finished fourth
Top seed Sergei Movsesian had to settle for the fifth spot
The battle between the two above players who finished fourth and sixth had a very nice finish
The cold-blooded engines say that White is winning in this position after 61.Qc4
Ernst decided to end the game with 61.Qb8+
The reason for the exclamation is not because it is a good move but it is not every day that you see a stalemate with so many pieces remaining on the board
As soon as the queen was placed on the b8 square both players began to laugh and shook their hands agreeing to a draw
An unusual stalemate brings smiles even on the faces of the best players
Second best woman player: Mariola Wozniak from Poland
The playing hall was slightly cramped and lacked ventilation…

I would like to show you one of the games from the 1922 Schachkongress held in Teplice in 1922
Fourteen European chess masters were invited to participate in the round robin event
Despite the absence of World Champion José Capablanca
thanks to the participation great masters like Akiba Rubinstein
Representing Czechoslovakia were Richard Réti and Karel Treybal
The tournament achieved attention through its seven brilliancy prize games of amazing artistic and technical skill
The participants of the Teplitz-Schönau 1922
There were seven games in this tournament that received a brilliancy prize
but I think the game between Maroczy and Tartakower was the most impressive one
Please take around ten minutes to think over this position and then play through the game in our Javascript board below
look at it before you peek at the solution
Master of the attack – Savielly Tartakower

Nd2 {The fireworks begin from this point onwards
The beautiful thing about the following sacrifice is that it was intuitively made by Tartakower
It is impossible to calculate right to the end.} Rxh2 $1 18
Rc1 {making space for the king on d1 might well be the best option.} (20
Kf1 Nh5 $1 $19 {The knight enters the attack and Black has a decisive advantage.}) 19..
Nf6 $1 { The queen on f2 is irritatingly placed
Tartakower finds it the perfect time to include more pieces into the attack.} (19..
Re2 {This is definitely the most natural and the best defensive move available in the position.} Qxg3 {Black is a rook down and has three pawns to compensate for it
The queen on g3 is a monster and the bishop on d6 and knight on f6 are backing it up
Nb1 {This looks like the most natural move
clearing the second rank for the white queen to join the defence.} (21
Qe2 Bd7 $19 {followed by Rf8 will end the game
Look at how all the white pieces are completely tied up.}) 22
Bd7 $1 { Tartakower's play is a perfect example of attacking play
Rg2 {might have been possible but Black can bring his last piece into the attack.} Rf8 26
Nc3 Bc7 { clearing the g3 square for the knight.} 27
Qg2 Rf8 {Black is now only a down a piece and already has three pawns for it
Besides the knight on b1 is completely out of the game
We can conclude that this is a completely winning position for the second player.} 28
Be1 Rxf1+ $1 {Tartakower sacrifices material with great ease in this game.} (28..
Kg1 Bg4 $1 {Attacking the d1 rook and also threatening Bf3.} 31
Kf1 Ng3+ {A mesmerisingly beautiful attack by Tartakower
He could intuitively feel that his attack was decisive even though there was no clear path to victory
He brought all his pieces into the attack with great patience and finished off the game to perfection
No wonder this game received a brilliancy prize.} ( 35..
PRAGUE (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered in a northern Czech town on Saturday to honor a Roma man who died after a police officer responding to a call about an altercation knelt on his neck
Police said the preliminary investigation showed no link between the police intervention and the man’s death
displaying banners that read “Roma Lives Matter,” condemned the police
Video footage shows one police officer kneeling on the man’s neck for several minutes in the northern city of Teplice on June 19
Roma activists and participants of Saturday’s gathering rejected the police explanation
The protesters later marched to a local police station
Roma have long suffered racism and discrimination in eastern Europe and continue to face huge hurdles in employment and education
Some compare the Roma man's death to the killing of George Floyd
a Black American man who died when a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck
Amnesty International and the government’s envoy for human rights all called for a thorough and independent investigation while the country’s deputy ombudsman said she will launch a separate probe into it

The Sportshall ”Teplice” will welcome 383 athletes from an impressive 29 nations over the 3rd and 4th of July
For many this is the beginning of their international career and so there are bound to be some astounding performances with new names to put on the map.
Alongside these ‘newbies’ we will find five-time cadet European cup medallist Miljan RADULJ (SRB) who most recently took his first gold in Porec in the -81kg category
Teplice certainly doesn’t hold bad memories for the 17 year-old who took bronze on his last appearance here but will be looking to improve on his past results.
It was an all-Serbian final in Porec where Miljan RADULJ (right) defeated team mate Stefan ZUBOVIC
Ema FIZELOVA (SVK) is seeking double gold
Another returning gold medallist from Porec is Ema FIZELOVA (SVK) in the -63kg category
There may be pressure to stay on top form now that the cadet tournaments have returned but given the last performance
We are very happy to be able to welcome back the cadet athletes
and following a wonderfully organised event in Croatia
Czech Republic are looking to follow suit and continue with their terrific standards
having already hosted a major tournament – 2020 European Championships – as well as the Prague senior European Open this year
Aside from the strict but very necessary protocol
it is a relief to have the calendar brimming with action once again.
Vera Zemanova is the first Czech girl since 2005 who has won gold at the Junior European Judo Cup in front of the home crowd. In the middle of the week Vera Zemanova fought extremely well in Ekaterinburg and the Czech judo fans expected something special from her in Prague
“I returned from Russia on Thursday and I was bit tired after the team championships
I was very concerned about my performance in Prague but after 2 days of rest and one short training I felt much better
I looked very much forward to compete in Prague.”
The start of the competition was good but the second fight against Pia GRABAR of Slovenia was extremely hard
“I had big difficulties with Grabar´s fighting style but after that fight I felt comfortable and confident.”
Vera then won in style the fights on the road to the final and there she met Iva OBERAN from Croatia
Vera looked determined from the beginning of the final fight and managed to score waza-ari with yoko gake
Then she finished the fight by a second waza-ari scored by o-ochi-gari and won her first medal at home
It is the town where one of the biggest Cadet European Judo Cup is held every year
Regretfully I have never won a medal there when I was a cadet
Therefore the gold from Prague is a great satisfaction for me
The feeling on the top of the podium is terrific
My greatest achievement so far is the fifth place from the last year junior European championships
And I will do my utmost to improve this result.”
the national coach of the Czech junior team added:
“Her performance today was like a dream for me
I was with her in Ekaterinburg and know how difficult it was for her
I am very proud of her and I hope for a medal in Sofia.”
The death of Romani man after he was restrained by police in Teplice
has become the subject of a new hip-hop song
The death has been compared to that of George Floyd in the United States
Both cases involved a police officer kneeling on the victim’s neck for several minutes before the victim died
and both cases have sparked protests over police tactics
Both incidents were documented on cell phone video
Filip Šenki, the 15-year-old son of activist and musician Milan Šenki, released a hip-hop video called “To kleknutí na krk znamená smrt” (Kneeling on the Neck Means Death). The video, with English subtitles, is on YouTube but is age restricted, which prevents it from being embedded. You can see it here
It features the younger Šenki in street clothes
intercut with footage of police arresting individual people and responding in riot gear to subdue large crowds
The lyrics acknowledge that police need to respond to crime
but they have a choice of how to act when they do
“Kneeling on necks means death; it’s your choice to be a bastard,” is the main refrain of the song
which released the video on its YouTube page
but I don't think a person should be kneeling on another person’s neck.”
“Filip and his friends wanted to express their disagreement with the intervention by the police officers in Teplice
right now he is dedicating himself to high-level boxing and won a bronze at the national championship this year," Milan Šenki told news server Romea.cz
Filip was trained by a riot response officer who taught him that when rendering your opponent motionless it is better to put your knee on the shoulder blades because the neck is simply a danger zone," he added
A Romani man in Teplice died in an ambulance on June 19 after police restrained him by kneeling on his neck
Czech Police say there is no similarity between the Teplice incident and the George Floyd case
They described the Romani man as a repeat offender who was intoxicated and causing property damage
and who refused to follow police instructions to stop
The police also claim the man died from a drug overdose
and not from being restrained by having a knee on his neck for over five minutes
“[Police actions] had no connection with the death of the deceased
This was confirmed by a court autopsy,” the police tweeted shortly after the incident
People who claim to have known the victim dispute the autopsy findings
The hospital where he was taken also could not comment due to privacy laws
The Security Corps General Inspection (GIBS) says there was no crime in the police response
and there are no plans to launch criminal proceedings over it
Candles and flowers soon appeared on the street where the incident occurred
These included flowers with a black ribbon with the phrase “Romani Lives Matter” (Na romských životech záleží)
A protest in Teplice on July 26 attracted several hundred people
despite police closing off roads to the area for security reasons
Various speakers made comments and a priest delivered a prayer for the deceased man
The protest ended when police told the crowd to disperse and it also started to rain
The Roma community in Kosovo and local activists on July 6 staged a protest march to the Czech Embassy
There were also protests in Vienna and London
The Council of Europe has called for an immediate
and independent investigation into the event
Russia on July 1 announced support for the request
The Czech branch of Amnesty International has called the police intervention rough and unlawful
and the head of the Sinti and Roma Council in Germany
