Two teams from the Czech Extraliga meet in the Champions Hockey League Round of 16
with domestic rivals Sparta Prague and Oceláři Třinec locking horns in Europe's biggest club ice hockey competition
but the first time – 2017/18 – they advanced all the way to the Semi-Finals
Třinec finished fourth in the Regular Season and Sparta 13th
and yet only two points separated these two teams
which was one fewer than Třinec’s 16
One big reason for Třinec’s offensive strength is their powerful powerplay – at 31.25%
they might find it difficult to score on Sparta
Sparta’s powerplay (18.52%) and Třinec’s PK (78.95%) are both very average
In goal, Josef Kořenář is the clear starter for Sparta, having played five of six in the Regular Season, and veteran Marek Mazanec
who took fellow Czech team Mountfield HK all the way to the 2019 CHL Final, is showing shades of his past CHL form in goal for Třinec
With so much shared domestic history between these two
it's impossible to give key areas to focus on
Home-ice advantage will play an important role in this match-up with higher-ranked Třinec getting the deserved advantage for the big Return Game
In this make-or-break match-up, Sparta Prague claimed redemption over Oceláři Třinec
defeating their fellow Czech challengers in this Champions Hockey League Round of 16 series 5-2 on aggregate
the visitors finished in this fixture as Sparta will return to the Quarter-Finals for the first time since the 2021/22 campaign
In a period of errant passes and unforced icings
neither team seemed to have much going as the puck dropped in the Werk arena
Late in the first frame, however, both clubs seemed to settle down and with 22 seconds left in the period, it was Valtteri Kemiläinen converting on the powerplay to give Sparta a 5-1 aggregate advantage and lead in the Return Game
The D-man positioned himself at the top of the triangle where he wired a shot through traffic to open the scoring
In a second period where Třinec needed a response, the hosts were unable to mount any extended time in the offensive zone. Sparta's defence did well closing gaps and forcing the hosts outside into the low-danger areas. Whatever opportunities they did generate were effectively snuffed out by Jakub Kovář as the Czech netminder continued to deny his opponents' attempts on net
Problems persisted for the hosts in the third period as the pressure continued to build with a four-goal aggregate deficit still hanging over their shoulders. Třinec were unable to exit their zone for stretches of play and this afforded Sparta more opportunities on the attack. Marek Mazanec managed to hold off the visitors' offensive
but the gap was too much for Třinec to overcome
As time wound down on their season, the home side didn't do themselves any favours, racking up multiple penalties including a game misconduct from Petr Sikora
leaving Sparta with consecutive powerplays and even some 5-on-3 play
Some consolation would eventually come to the struggling home side when Patrik Volas redirected a shot from Marko Daňo at 57:41
But the breakthrough came too little too late as Třinec
who ended the Regular Season in fourth place
exited in the Round of 16 for the second consecutive season

It aims to become more environmentally friendly by motivating its citizens to use trains
this EU-funded project helped construct a parking tower for bicycles
automated system can park up to 118 bicycles and is next to the city’s busy transport terminal
The Třinec smart city strategy is built around three pillars: smart administration
Each pillar is broken down into sub-pillars
Transport is focused on developing clean public transport and encouraging use of bicycles and electric vehicles
At the heart of this effort is the construction of a new railway near the city’s main square
Not only does the new terminal provide residents with modern amenities
it also serves as the hub for the city’s smart transportation system
By relocating the station to the city centre
city administrators next turned to creating the conditions to encourage people to use their bikes – not only for recreational use
but also for their daily commuting to work
The city also installed charging stations for e-bikes
Although all this infrastructure is essential
the star attraction of this phase is the bicycle parking tower
The tower is state-of-the-art and high-tech

National League runners-up Lausanne HC hosted reigning Czech Extraliga champions Oceláři Třinec in their opening encounter of the 2024/2025 CHL season
riding high on confidence from their successful previous campaigns
delivered a fierce battle at the Vaudoise Aréna
The first period was slow in terms of offensive action as both teams focused on defence. That resulted in few scoring opportunities. Despite both teams being rewarded a one-man advantage, neither were able to capitalise on the powerplay. The closest chance came early in the game when Damien Riat nearly tapped one past Třinec’s goaltender Marek Mazanec
securing a 2-1 victory for the Czech visitors
Oceláři Třinec represent the largest steel producer in the Czech Republic – the group Třinecké železárny – Moravia Steel
The hockey club was founded in 1929 and has been playing in the highest Czech hockey league since the 1995/96 season. The first major success came in the 1997/98 season when the club fought their way to the Czech Extraliga finals but failed to win
The team have now won five titles in the Czech Extraliga
Their first came in 2010/11 when they won the regular season and the playoffs, confidently defeating local rivals Vítkovice Ostrava 4-1 in the finals
After losing to Kometa Brno in the 2018 finals
they defeated Bílí Tygři Liberec in six games in the 2019 finals to secure their second title
In 2020 they finished second in the Czech Extraliga regular season (the playoffs were cancelled due to COVID-19) and in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons they won back-to-back national championships for the first time in the club's history
fourth if you skip the cancelled COVID season, in 2022/23 and then made it five with their most recent championship win in 2023/24
After qualifying for the first two Champions Hockey League seasons
Oceláři Třinec and their fans unquestionably fell in love with the European competition in 2017/18 on their run to the Semi-Finals
The team from the northeast corner of the Czech Republic were backed by hundreds of fans on weeknights in Northern Europe and thousands at their home games
Třinec eventually came up just short of reaching the Final
going out in a shootout to JYP despite having levelled the aggregate score with a 4-2 home win
with the club failing to qualify for the Playoffs on all four occasions.
2023/24 marked the club's eighth season on Europe's biggest club ice hockey stage and saw the Czechs make it out of the Regular Season but drop out in the Round of 16 to eventual Finalists Skellefteå AIK from Sweden
The Belfast Giants welcomed Czech Extraliga champions Oceláři Třinec for their second duel after a 4-0 shutout win by Třinec last time around.
This time, Belfast got straight to work, with Will Cullen cracking open the scoreboard with a wrist shot at the blue line
giving the home team a 1-0 lead at the nine minute mark
A few minutes later, Jan Zahradníček was sent to the box for hooking
but the home team were unable to add to their advantage, as the opening period came to a close with a 1-0 lead for Belfast
Coming into the second stanza, Třinec, looking to get the equaliser, upped the ante, as the Giants found themselves heading to the box for the first time on a high sticking call on Colby McAuley, followed by a face-off penalty for Ben Lake
giving Třinec a five-on-three opportunity
Just when it looked like Belfast had silenced Třinec, Petr Vrana put them on the board at the fifty minute mark with the assist by Miloš Roman. Picking up on that momentum, Tomáš Marcinko came in with the equaliser
making it a 2-2 game with fifty-seven minutes on the clock
Belfast's Sam Ruopp's penalty for checking on the head or neck looked as if it would settle the score
After an unbelievable shootout, the game was decided in the tenth round, giving Belfast their first CHL win of the season at the hands of Mark Cooper
Each Wednesday we're going to tell you some things you might not know about our stars in this season's Champions Hockey League
This week we look at a Czech forward who was literally born to play hockey
It's not uncommon for players to have parents or siblings in the game, but Oceláři Třinec's David Musil takes it to another level
played 797 NHL games over the 1990s before returning home and retiring in 2002
He also won every colour of World Championship medal with the Czechoslovak national team
Musil's uncle is the great Bobby Holik
who played 1314 NHL games over 18 seasons in North America
and won two Stanley Cups as well as a World Championship Bronze
Grandfather Jaroslav Holík played his entire career in Czechoslovakia
mostly for the family's 'home town' team in Jihlava. Great Uncle Jiří Holík also had a distinguished career
winning three World Championship gold and five silver medals; and two Olympic silver and bronze medals for Czechoslovakia
Musil's 21-year-old younger brother Adam is currently in the AHL having been drafted by the St
When you also add in that Musil's mother was a tennis player who reached a career-high of 65 in the world
but Oceláři Třinec scored three times in the third period to win the home leg of their Quarterfinal over Brynäs IF 3-1
Buoyed by their energetic home fans and an early power play
firing nine shots at Linus Ferström before Brynäs managed to test Šimon Hrubec at the other end
Brynäs came back with a mighty push in the last half of the period
and would have opened the scoring if not for two spectacular saves by Hrubec – first off Aaron Palushaje
with Kevin Clark unable to put in the rebound
who tried to flip the puck over the fallen goalie but Hrubec got his arm on it to knock it away
Both goalies continued to shine in the second period
with the teams trading brilliant chances in the middle of the frame
Andrew Miller opened the scoring for Brynäs
taking a pass and shooting from a sharp angle off the arm of Hrubec and in
but Brynäs took two penalties in the last minute of the second period
Daniel Rakoš scored just 25 seconds into the third
taking a pass from Tomáš Marcinko down low and firing home a one-timer over Fernström’s glove
the home team took the lead on Martin Adamsky’s slapper from the top of the circle through a crowd
they opened up a two-goal advantage when Aron Chmielewski took a pass in front and backhanded it past Fernström from in close
Brynäs got a late power play and a chance to at least get within a goal heading into their home leg but were unable to get any really good scoring chances in the final minutes
meaning that Třinec take a two-goal lead into Sweden next week
The Lahti Pelicans faced a hungry Oceláři Třinec squad in their first-ever Champions Hockey League game but
thanks to a 45-save shutout performance by Tomi Karhunen
they escaped with a 1-0 victory on home ice.
The first two periods were scoreless and were
dominated by Třinec – especially the first period
both teams had decent chances to break the deadlock but goaltenders Karhunen and Patrik Barošák were perfect
The Pelicans finally broke through on the power play four minutes into the third period when captain Hannes Björninen took a pass in the slot from Juhamatti Aaltonenand beat Bartošák to the near-side post.
Třinec's best chance after that came midway through the third period when Marek Adamský was hooked on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot
Coach Václav Varaďa elected to have Matěj Stranský take the shot and he tried to go five-hole
Třinec tried to pressure in the late going but Tomáš Marcinko was penalized for goaltender interference with 3:29 left
which greatly hurt their chances of scoring and they never seriously threatened again.
A pair of teams that qualified as league semi-finalists last year
Brynäs IF and Oceláři Třinec now meet to decide who will go to that round of the Champions Hockey League for the first time this season – only one of them will
While both teams are strong at both ends of the ice
it will be interesting to see if the stingy defence of Třinec – led by goaltender Šimon Hrubec – can contain the high-flying offence of Brynäs
Třinec have been among the leaders of the Czech Extraliga all season
while Brynäs have struggled in the first half of the Swedish Hockey League season
Here's how the two teams match up head-to-head:
Daniel Vladimir Tkac scored the tie-breaker with 2:56 left in the third period as Slovakia kicked off its tournament with a tough 3-1 win over Kazakhstan on Friday
a World Junior rookie born in Pittsburgh to Slovak parents
rushed to the net and converted Michal Mrazik's feed
After the play was video-reviewed and ruled good, the Werk Arena crowd of 4,915 erupted
"Michal Mrazik took the puck behind the net and he found me back door," said Tkac
It was nothing like Slovakia's 11-2 romp over Kazakhstan last year in Victoria
their hopes of avoiding the relegation round have taken a hit despite their valiant effort
since this was likely their most winnable Group A option
They are now 0-2 after their first-day 5-3 loss to Switzerland
"They had six or seven players who played last year," said Slovakia's Maxim Cajkovic. "So they had that experience
We had only two players back and most of the team was basically rookies
And we also played in front of our own fans
We knew we had to win this game to make it easier in the future
I think our hands and our minds were a little bit slower tonight."
Oliver Okuliar and Robert Dzugan also scored for Slovakia
This was Slovakia's fourth straight win over Kazakhstan in World Junior history
The former Soviet republic won the first encounter 5-2 on 28 December
"It's a great feeling," said Cajkovic. "It's awesome
Kazakh goalie Vladislav Nurek and his Slovak counterpart Samuel Hlavaj staged a good duel
Trinec is just minutes from the Slovakian border
and Werk Arena was packed with flag-waving
Slovakia has never had a smooth ride at this tournament
easily the biggest highlight remains winning bronze in 2015 in Montreal
which broke up a string of seventh- and eighth-place finishes
nothing quells hockey fever in the Central European nation of 5.4 million people
The evenly played first period was scoreless
After Kazakhstan failed to capitalize with the game’s first man advantage
Hlavaj foiled a dangerous shorthanded rush with Kazakh assistant captain Ruslan Demin feeding Andrey Buyalskiy
Slovakia had its own power play opportunities late in the frame
Okuliar finally drew first blood for Slovakia on the power play with a great shot from the right faceoff circle at 4:49
Kzakhstan equalized with a power-play marker near the midway mark
and he stepped off the side boards to snipe one short side over Hlavaj's right shoulder
It was the Kazakh assistant captain's team-leading third goal of these World Juniors
"We just kept playing our game," Tkac said
We just knew what we had to do and we did it in the end."
The grit and intensity picked up in the third period
Konstantin Bondarenko hobbled to the bench after blocking a big drive by Slovakia's David Mudrak
Poor discipline nearly cost the Slovaks as they took back-to-back minors with under 10 minutes left and were besieged by coach Sergei Starygin's men
Asked if taking fewer penalties is a priority
That's all we were talking about in the exhibition games
We knew that our discipline is not as good as it should be
We need to manage our sticks and our hands and stop making those little mistakes with tripping and hooking
we shot the puck [over the glass in our] zone
We just need to focus and play simple."
Dzugan added an empty-netter to round out the scoring
The lively atmosphere at the arena provided a nice distraction from HC Ocelari Trinec's opening 4-1 loss to Canada at the Spengler Cup in Switzerland
which is the reigning Czech Extraliga champion
faced host Davos in its second game on Friday night
Belfast matched the hosts for much of the game
before a third period brace and an empty netter from Třinec iced the game
Mark Cooper’s big hit at the blue line sent the Giants onto the penalty kill in the second minute
Třinec turned the screw on Belfast back at full strength
camping out in the zone and peppering goalie Peyton Jones in the crease
Belfast’s opening power play at 12:07 was short lived
Seconds after Marko Dano took a seat for interference
Scott Conway was hauled for high sticking- sending the sides to 4 on 4.Jones was stellar in the 11th minute as Daniel Kurovsky struck a pair of grade A shots in quick succession
and the Giants continued to hang in there with the Czech Champions
Gabe Bast’s high stick on Alan Lyszczarczyk at 14:34 drew a 2+2 penalty
but as he left the box following a successful kill
an Ocelari shot from the right circle bounced awkwardly off the boards and into the path of Daniel Vozenilek
who edged the hosts into the lead at 18:38
Ciaran Long provided Belfast’s first big chance of the middle period
skating into the zone and deking defenceman Karlis Cukstre before ripping a shot from the right circle after 25 minutes
A scramble in front of the open net brought the Giants agonisingly close to an equaliser mid-period
but Mark Cooper’s dish across the front of goal couldn’t find the blade of a Giant’s stick
Darik Angeli’s hooking call at 33:22 sent Oceláři Třinec onto their fourth power play of the afternoon
but Kevin Raine and the Giants special teams held firm
Raine was called for a dubious tripping penalty with just over 10 seconds remaining in the period
leaving the Giants on the kill to begin the third
The Belfast Giants opened their third period by going 5 for 5 on the penalty kill
an impressive display of resolve against a highly offensive Czech side
Colby McAuley’s effort in-close on Třinec’s Marek Mazanec looked to have tied it after 45 minutes
but a video review deemed that the puck did not cross the goal line
Chad Butcher and Tyler Soy’s 2 on 1 in the 46th minute was shut down by Mazanec
intercepting the puck before it reached Soy at the back door
Jakub Jerabek’s tripping call at 47:01 looked like it could have ended up a Giants 5 on 3
an astonished Scott Conway could do nothing as the referee waved play on
but Marko Dano found the puck on the breakaway short-handed; entering the zone and cutting inside to rip a shot from the right circle at 50:33
Libor Hudacek’s puck across the face of goal was met on the left by Petr Vrana to add a third at 53:43
(3-0)Vladimir Dravecky’s slashing penalty at 56:21 was Adam Keefe’s cue to pull Peyton Jones for the 6 on 4 power play
but Jan Zahradnicek’s sauce from the neutral zone sailed into the empty net at 57:29 to end the game

Oceláři Třinec had a successful run to the Semi-Finals of the Champions Hockey League
thanks in large part to the goaltending of Šimon Hrubec
Hrubec's statistics in the European championship were eye-popping: he won 9 of his 10 games
with a goals-against average of 1.07 and a save percentage of 96.19
It was little wonder he won the NordicBet MVP Trophy.
Hrubec and his teammates are in another intense battle for the championship of the Czech Extraliga
Třinec is in the finals against another team that had a good CHL run
both teams were eliminated in successive CHL stages by eventual champions JYP Jyväskylä. After the teams split the first two games over the weekend in Třinec
the scene shifts to Brno for games 3 and 4 on Wednesday and Thursday.
"It’s been an offensive style of hockey with lots of goals," Hrubec said of the first two games "If I look for the main factors
I would say power plays and who scores the first goal
but the second was a bit unlucky for us."
Hrubec says: "It would be great to have as good a start as we had in the first game
We're very strong with the puck and can create a huge amount of scoring chances
As many CHL players commented this past season
DRFG Arena is not a welcoming place for visiting teams
"The playoffs are always about great atmosphere
but it will definitely be helpful for us as well."
but the playoffs are when championship teams are made
They haven't buckled under the pressure
beating Dynamo Pardubice and Mountfield HK in six games in the quarter-finals and semi-finals
Hrubec believes that the intensity of the CHL games
and victories over three Swedish teams along the way
have given the team the necessary confidence
"The young players realized that they can play against top players," he said
"The competition in the Champions Hockey League is very tough – there are former NHL and KHL players and national team members from Sweden
we realized that we can play with these strong teams and even beat them
a great experience and I’m very pleased that we've qualified for the next CHL season as well."
If playing in the Extraliga finals isn't enough to keep his mind busy
and he explained how his wife has helped him be able to properly prepare himself mentally for games
"After the first two semi-final games
my wife took the baby to České Budějovice," he explained
she took him to the other room so that I could have a good sleep
