Matyáš Chochola’s The Virtues and Vices of Our Time installation merges historical allegory with technology to reimagine the timeless duality of human nature
A series of twelve sculptures sprout at the EPO1 Contemporary Art Center in the Czech Republic
a former industrial complex transformed into a cultural hub
to present an expressive postmodern reinterpretation of classical archetypes
The vessels are shaped from 3D printed concrete and evoke Matthias Bernard Braun’s early 18th-century Baroque cycle Virtues and Vices
With each work standing at a height of 3 to 4 meters and weighing around a ton
the installation explores a stylistic spectrum ranging from antiquity and cubism to brutalism and sci-fi
creating a visual language that recalls temple ruins or a chessboard
Currently exhibited at a gallery space in Trutnov, The Virtues and Vices of Our Time is envisioned for a future permanent placement within an architectural setting designed to engage with public space. Here, Czech sculptor Matyáš Chochola revisits Braun’s allegories
originally crafted for the Baroque complex at Kuks
but strips them of their historical moral framework
Chochola introduces a contemporary reinterpretation that blurs the boundaries between virtue and vice
‘The sculptures and their unique characters
and references to various historical styles
or values have no clear continuity — they are incorporated freely into the sculptures
They carry both positive and negative qualities
Each piece invites the viewer to engage with its cryptographic meaning
allowing for personal interpretations beyond the rigid moral codes of the past
The sculptures bear evocative working titles
Produced using advanced concrete 3D-printing techniques
the works push the material’s limits through extensive experimentation
Forms that exceed standard printable angles were supported with lightweight clay aggregates
Chochola introduced hand interventions using glass
reinforcing the artisanal aspect of the 3D-printed structures
algorithmic simulations of printing errors and deliberate manual glitches disrupted conventional production methods
resulting in unpredictable and unique forms

construction of the D11 motorway will begin in Královec
The section between Trutnov and the Polish border is expected to be completed by 2027 and will connect to the Polish S3 expressway
The start of construction was delayed for several months due to disputes over the contractor selection
The Polish company Budimex SA and a Czech-Slovak-Hungarian consortium led by MI Roads of the Metrostav Group competed for the contract
the media reported that construction had stalled
All complications have since been resolved in record time,” wrote Martin Kupka
The Minister emphasised that the 21-kilometre section of the D11 motorway represents the largest road contract in the history of the Czech Roads and Motorways Directorate (RSD)
and three level crossings will be built between Trutnov and the Polish border
Czech media have highlighted that no other motorway of such engineering complexity has ever been built in the country
The first step will be the construction of a three-kilometre section between Královec and Bernartice
the expressway currently allows access to the Lubawka junction
will be opened when the D11 section in the Czech Republic is completed
“This is an extremely demanding project and the largest RSD order in decades
It’s crucial to maximise the remaining time before winter
We need to start construction as soon as possible
and we are now providing RSD with all the necessary support,” said Zdenek Ludvik
The Czech Roads and Motorways Directorate is also preparing the second missing section of the D11 motorway between Jaromer and Trutnov
the tender for this contract will be announced later this year
with construction expected to begin next year
most of the S3 route has already been completed
the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways opened the section of the expressway between the Bolków and Kamienna Góra Północ junctions
The S3 section between Świnoujście and Troszyn in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship is still under construction and is expected to be operational by the end of 2024
Once the Świnoujście-Troszyn section is finished
a modern transport route will span Poland’s western border
connecting the ports of Świnoujście and Szczecin to southern Poland and the Czech Republic
the route will extend all the way to Prague
forming a vital link between Poland and its southern neighbour

Heavy rains have once again raised the levels of many rivers in the Czech Republic
with over 40 locations reporting one of the three degrees of flood alert early this morning
the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMU) announced on its website today
The highest third degree warning was declared on the Labe (Elbe) River in Vestrev
Several dozen other places declared the second or first (lowest) degree of flood warning
a heavy rain warning is valid until Thursday morning
and a warning against flooding of rivers until further notice
The Otava in Rejstejn near Klatovy reached the third degree of flood danger before 3am this morning
and is now fluctuating between the third and second degrees
The Labe River in Vestrev near Trutnov has been on the third degree since 4am
The second degree of flood alert is in application on the Cidlina River in the Hradec Kralove Region
on the Vltava River in the UNESCO-listed Cesky Krumlov in the South Bohemia Region
on the Otava River in Susice and the Kremelna River in the Plzen Region
and on the Bilina River in the Usti Region
precipitation will be more frequent in the mountains
so fluctuations in water levels can still be expected in the mountain and foothill areas around the first and second degree of flood activity,” the CHMU said
Meteorologists forecast heavy rains in the South Bohemian Region around Cesky Krumlov
in the Plzen Region in the Susice and Klatovy areas
in the Liberec Region around Jilemnice and Tanvald
and in the Hradec Kralove Region in the vicinity of Trutnov and Vrchlabi until Thursday morning
the water levels of several rivers in the Czech Republic were already rising before Christmas Eve
and around 170 places reported some degree of flood warning during the Christmas holidays
