The fatal attack took place around lunchtime in the quiet town of Uhersky Brod, about 180 miles southeast of Prague near the border with Slovakia.
Czech Interior Minister Milan Chovanec told reporters at the scene that what was widely described as the worst shooting in the Czech Republic’s history “was not a terrorist attack.”
One woman, believed to be a waitress, was seriously injured and was rushed to hospital after being shot in the chest. A man escaped by cowering in one of the bathrooms.
The gunman, described by the town’s mayor as a local man in his 60s, reportedly phoned the crime hotline of a Czech TV channel shortly before the shooting. He reportedly said he had problems with many people and that authorities would not help him so he had no choice but to “take things into his own hands.”
The mayor said the man carried two weapons and burst into the restaurant where about 20 people were dining and opened fire at random.
“Nobody believed anything like that could happen in such a small town,” Mayor Patrik Kuncar told Czech media. “I can hardly imagine what consequences it will have for the future life in this town.”
Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, who is on a visit to South Korea, released a statement saying he was shocked by the events and offered his condolences to victims’ relatives.
One customer, Petr Gabriel, said he only escaped with his life by remaining holed up inside a bathroom for nearly two hours until police rescued him.
“At first I thought that someone was celebrating something,” he told Czech media. “But then people started shouting.”

Česká Zbrojovka Uhersky Brod (CZUB) is one of my favorite firearms manufacturers
Iconic weapons such as the Vz.58 and the CZ-75 came from behind the Iron Curtain and are still relevant today
The company itself has a rich and interesting history
as our guide – who had worked at CZUB for almost 40 years
and whose grandfather worked at the factory during World War II – explains
One thing I’ve wondered about for quite some time is exactly how to pronounce Česká Zbrojovka (the name of the company) and Uhersky Brod (the name of the town where the main factory is located)
Boris of CZ was working the booth at IWA and prounounced them both for me
our guide explains the difference between “CZ” and “Vz.”

Attack in hospital waiting room in Ostrava is deadliest mass shooting in country since 2015
A gunman has killed six people in a hospital waiting room in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava before fleeing and fatally shooting himself
It was the worst shooting in the Czech Republic, where gun crime is relatively rare, since a man shot eight people dead and then killed himself at a restaurant in Uherský Brod in 2015
It was unclear what motivated the shooting
which happened in the early morning at the outpatient clinic of the University hospital in the city
The 42-year-old gunman fled the hospital after the attack
prompting a search involving hundreds of officers
He later shot himself in the head in his car as a police helicopter flew overhead
He died about half an hour later after police were unable to resuscitate him
citing the director of the firm where he worked
identified the suspect as a local construction technician and said he had been on medical leave
Reuters could not immediately confirm that
Police said they received calls at 7.19am (0619 GMT) and officers arrived at the scene five minutes later
said five people died in the attack and one died in surgery
Another two were seriously injured and no medics were hurt
The head of the regional police department
said the attacker was silent as he carried out the shooting and there was no indication of accomplices
From the eastern part of the Czech Republic
Česká Zbrojovka (CZ) supplies its products to hunters
innovative engineering and modern machinery still characterize the arms factory founded in 1936
CZ (Česká Zbrojovka) has always been part of the national risk prevention system of the Czech Republic
This can still be seen in the architecture: many widely spread and rather flat buildings used to protect against spying and attacks from the air
A walk across the long factory premises also shows that tradition and modernity are successfully combined here
The buildings largely correspond to the architectural style of the 1930s
they conceal a modern machine park of the latest generation that can manufacture both civilian and military products
It is impressive how efficient the traditional Czech company presents itself
Around 1700 employees work here in the southeast of the Czech Republic near the border with Slovakia
transforming steel and other raw materials into high-quality service
If you enter the individual production facilities in the buildings
you will come across traditional craftsmanship in addition to the latest technology
smelting furnaces in which frames are cast with the help of previously manufactured clay molds
CZ also has its own efficient barrel production facility – the barrels are cold-hammered
Each product then passes test firings before it is sent for final cleaning and then for worldwide shipment
the CZ catalog includes around 500 different products
It exports to almost 100 countries in all continents
which complements the successful striker fired pistol family
The family man and passionate hunter also brings expertise from the field of security consulting
His sales team will grow in the coming months
On account of its history as a state weapons factory
the small and fine sample collection at the company headquarters contains some unusual pieces
the aircraft LK30 machine gun was manufactured in Uherský Brod
Czechoslovakia also relied on its own weapons technology expertise
and no other Warsaw Pact modification of the Avtomat Kalaschnikova (AK) was issued to the Czechoslovakian armed forces at that time
Other world-famous products of this era include the Scorpion vz
61 submachine gun – one of the first personal defense weapons ever – or the CZ 75 pistol
which has long been considered a classic in the field of handguns and on the basis of which countless pistols were developed
While shooting and hunting guns were still part of the catalog
58 assault rifle ended in 1982 and almost three decades later CZ re-entered the military weapons sector
the sturdy CZ 805 Bren 1 assault rifle was introduced
followed a little later by the modernized Bren 2
Both weapons are now in the arsenal of the Czech and partly also Slovak armed forces
CZ also offers modern service pistol families, both hammer fired (CZ P-07, CZ P-09) and striker fired (CZ P-10)
The catalog also includes the Scorpion Evo submachine gun (in 9 mm Luger)
CZ sold its modern range of handguns to its NATO partner Hungary
the decision was made to modernize the handgun inventory with CZ products
Hungary attaches great importance to know-how transfer and in-house production
the Scorpion Evo submachine gun and the P07 and P09 hammer-fired pistols are built under license
armed and security forces from over 40 countries currently use CZ weapons
CZ has achieved great commercial success with its P-10 family
Currently three sizes of the rugged and ergonomic striker fired pistol are available: F for "Full Size"
Common to all models is the polymer grip with interchangeable backstraps and the slide stop lever that can be operated from both sides
as well as the slide with a coating that the company claims is extremely durable
Front and rear cocking serrations simplify loading and check operations
The magazine release button can be remounted by the user on the other side of the gun
The iron sights with self-illuminated night dots can be easily adjusted
there is an Optics-Ready version that accepts optics
the magazine capacity is between 12 and 19 cartridges
It was only in April 2020 that the Czech armed forces awarded CZ a framework contract worth almost 90 million euros for the supply of guns and ammunition
If the full scope of the contract is called up
over 1600 CZ 805 G1 accessory grenade launchers and around 100 CZ Scorpion submachine guns could be delivered by 2025
In 2010 and 2016 CZ had already equipped the armed forces of its home country – 26,000 professional soldiers and 11,000 reservists – with around 40,000 new weapons
"The Army of the Czech Republic demands only the best armament
This contract is an assurance for us that we are doing our job well and create high-quality and innovative products that hold up even in the most demanding military and law enforcement markets,” says Luboš Kovarík
CZ's CEO Ladislav Britanák is also pleased with the order: “We are honoured to be able to further supply our army
which is historically one of the most important customers of CZ and also an important reference in world markets.” Luboš Kovarík and Ladislav Britanák also welcomed the fact that with this order the Czech government is sending an important signal of support for domestic industry and thus also for national security in times of crisis
In May 2020 CZ was joined by the innovative gun designer and tuning specialist Hakan Spuhr from Sweden
We are curious what this means for the popular sport pistols based on the CZ-75
And so there will be a lot of news to report from Uherský Brod in the future

construction of what would become a major firearms manufacturer started in the Moravian town of Uherský Brod as part of an effort to move a vast portion of the Czechoslovakian military and otherwise strategic manufacturing industry eastward given the worrisome aims of Nazi Germany towards the what they called the Sudetes – the western portion of the Country
That factory, today, survives as CZ - Česká Zbrojovka Uherský Brod A.S.
and is known on the global markets as one of the biggest and most important manufacturers of firearms for hunters
law enforcement bodies and military operators

a fixed front post fiber-optic sight and a fully adjustable rear sight
complete this embodiement of the top sport pedigree and the precision manufacturing that's part of the CZ heritage

“A clean-sheet design”: this is how CZ introduces its new iteration of the Bren model
With a trimmed-down aluminum receiver and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer
it’s now a much lighter gun in pistol form
It’s offered in multiple barrel lengths and two chamberings
- the most important firearms manufacturer of Czech Republic better known worldwide simply as CZ - introduces a new iteration of its Bren rifle
“the Bren 2 is a clean-sheet design” in pistol form - which means it's a semiautomatic gun
not a full auto weapon - with multiple barrel lengths and two chamberings
The new Bren 2 Ms Pistol’s aluminum receiver has been trimmed-down
while the lower is made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer
resulting in a lighter gun (depending on the version and barrel length
The reciprocating charging handle of the previous CZ-805 Bren has been replaced with one that stays stowed in the forward position until it is needed
It can be swapped left or right side and also doubles as a forward assist
an AR-style bolt catch/release system has been added into the front of the trigger guard
AR-style fully ambidextrous magazine release and safety complete the controls
The .223 variants also use the familiar AR-15 style magazines and magazine capacity is 30 rounds in both calibers
11” and 14”) are available for the 7.62×39 version and two (8” or 11”) for the .223/5.56x45mm version
“All variants are swappable to different barrel lengths and chamberings and also feature a modular forend that can be swapped to different lengths,” guarantees CZ
the Bren 2 Ms comes with a flush rear plate that has the provision for attaching a AR-style buffer tube for the installation of an arm brace
cheek rest or similar pistol stabilizing device
a Carbine buffer tube and stock can be installed or the entire rear plate can be removed and replaced with a factory folding/adjustable stock.”
The MSRP in the US is luckily the same for all versions and calibers: 1799 USD

The CZ 97B made its debut in 1997. It’s manufactured by Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod in the Czech Republic – now part of Colt CZ Group – with a U.S
(I guess 97 is a lucky number for me; 1997 was my college graduation year!)
As I’ve mentioned in some of my previous gun reviews
which gives me a tendency to pull slightly high left with many handguns at the 7-yard line
Not so with the 97B: it absolutely chewed out the center of the target’s face at that distance
(One lousy proverbial “black sheep” strayed slightly rightward to spoil the one-hold group)
four strayed rightward into the hip and thigh
and three whiffed; I daresay those were my fault
and private military contractor (with assignments worked in Iraq
Czech-based CSA manufactures and distributes worldwide a line of semi-automatic rifles and carbines based upon the tried and true Czechoslovakian Vz.58 assault rifle
Formerly an emblem of the Cold War and of international terrorism
the Vz.58 rifles and the "Škorpion" sub-machineguns are now largely regarded as obsolete and no longer apt for modern militaries − although they still see official service in some Asian
mid-Eastern and African Countries − but their semi-automatic
civilian-grade versions are highly sought after by collectors and recreational shooters; THE Vz.58-based rifles are particularly apt for use in 3-Gun matches
while generally the CSA line of firearms are perfect for private security duties and private ownership for personal
All the Vz.58 and Vz.61 variants manufactured by CSA are built according to the most modern quality canons and standards
although maintaining a high degree of faithfulness to the original military firearms; nonetheless
their mechanical components have been modified so that they would only fire in semi-automatic and may not be converted to full-automatic fire without risking to permanently damage the guns themselves: that's what laws and regulations in many Countries mandate for civilian-grade
Currently, CSA's versions of the SA Vz.58 rifle platform are regarded as some of the best ever made
The company offers its Vz.58 series rifles and carbines with standard black polymer furniture or Israeli-made CAA Tactical handguards and pistol grips; a small batch was manufactured some time ago with the original wood furniture
The CSA Vz.58 rifles and carbines are available with a standard black polymer fixed stock or with a thumbhole stock
with the original metal side-folding stock of the Vz.58V assault rifle
or with a CAA Tactical side-folding and collapsing buttstock; all share the short piston
falling block working system and the wide bolt opening and ejection window that make the similarities between the Vz.58 and the AK-47/AKM systems only aesthetic in nature
CSA's Vz.58 "Sporter Rifle" come with a 410mm barrel
while the Vz.58 "Sporter Carbine" sports a shorter handguard and a 300mm barrel; both versions are available in the original 7.62x39mm caliber − feeding through original-type Vz.58 magazines − and in the .223 Remington (5.56x45mm-NATO) chambering that's much more common in western Countries
these variants feeding through a proprietary translucent polymer magazine
although a snap-in adapter with free-fall magazine release button is available to convert them to use STANAG 4179 (AR-15 style) magazines
both calibers are available for the ultra-short Vz.58 "Sporter Compact" version
featuring a side-folding metal stock and a 190mm barrel
Czech Small Arms has the capabilities to produce its Vz.58 rifles and carbines in full-automatic/select-fire versions upon request
only and solely for military and Police customers

Americans sometime suffer from the "If we didn't invent it here we're not interested" syndrome
but just often enough it can get in the way of a good thing
We've covered CZ-USA pistols before in Police
and frankly were very impressed with their new PO-1 duty pistol
After having our minds opened with that experience
when the opportunity to test a brand new design from CZ appeared as if by magic
especially since we had a small part in its final design
allow us to clear up some confusion concerning the "CZ" name
Established in 1936 in the small Moravian town of Uhersky Brod in then Czechoslovakia
today's CZ has undergone several make-overs before arriving where it is now as one of the leaders in firearm design and manufacture
Thanks to the Cold War and related politics
all gun makers in Czechoslovakia worked under the same umbrella of the "state" and all firearms had to bear the Czech "BRNO" mark
regardless of which maker or factory they originated from
those of us outside the communist block generally assumed "BRNO" was the maker of a wide range of designs
It was as if all the makes in the United States were sold under one label
along with the VZ 61 Skorpion sub-gun and rifles
Czech weapons factories were "de-centralized" and began business on the free market
CZ "UB" (for Uhersky Brod) was the first to take that leap and promptly dominated the market in more than 60 countries
CZUB established a permanent presence in the United States in the form of CZ-USA
specifically created to handle the American market
over the years a wide range of firearms made in the Czech Republic have been imported into the U.S.
Think of the "CZ" label as simply saying "USA" and you'll get the idea
It would be as if Europeans started calling all guns made in the states "USA" brand
I'd imagine Colt would be a bit upset if they were called by the same name as S&W
working out of its facility in Kansas City
where it offers warranty service and a complete parts department
CZ-USA is only one "brand" of firearm made in the Czech Republic and others may say "CZ" on them
I was fortunate enough to tour the CZ Factory late last year and was able to examine some prototype handguns
who smiled and said it was a gun called the RAMI
Therein began a semi-spirited discussion where Milan tried to convince me it didn't need one and I tried to explain the peculiarities of the American market
but the realities of our market remained true
Two months ago I received a call from Alice Poluchova
who happily announced the RAMI had passed import inspections and was now available for testing
"It's got a slide stop on it." It seems CZUB understood after all
The test gun is an early import and is roughly Colt Officer's ACP-sized (or a bit smaller)
and attention to detail of late-model CZUB products
but it felt just a bit "foreign" in the hand
A lifetime spent with 1911s and S&W revolvers creates muscle memories hard to break
but one that still fit easily in my smallish hands
One of our testers did comment he'd like to see a magazine extension for the little finger
even when firing hot .40 S&W ammo.[PAGEBREAK]
This is an off-duty or concealed carry pistol
there's no doubt all the major holster makers will come up with leather and synthetic CCW gear quickly
Some of the more generic "belt-slide" holsters will probably fit it now
The entire gun is finished in CZ's Black Polymer finish
which is basically a black powder coat (baked finish) applied over a "phosphate" or Parkerized base coating
It's the same finish used on CZ 75 pistols and other CZUB arms
Holding 8+1 in .40 S&W (10+1 in 9mm) the RAMI offers a fistful of power in either guise
the RAMI comes in a plastic box with a spare mag
including cleaning gear and a comprehensive manual
The manual covers all aspects of the RAMI and is very well produced
CZ has elected to leave the trigger guard rounded
but will make legions of holster-makers happier
The tang is an extended "beavertail" type and forward cocking serrations on the slide make "press-checks" simple and secure
Grips are black rubber and do the job just fine
The action is where things get interesting
This pistol can be carried "cocked and locked" with the hammer back and the safety on
making the first shot a classic single-action one
It can also be carried with the hammer down
you've got to pinch the hammer between your fingers
once you press that trigger and begin the hammer-down
But we're all adults and there's no reason you can't do this safely (we've been doing it for a hundred years with the 1911)
unless you're a certifiable idiot-and then you shouldn't have it to begin with
and move it backwards about a "hair" to move it ever so slightly out of battery
A "hair" is less than "some" and more than a "tad" if you know what I mean
It isn't an exact science and it took us a few tries to get the hang of it
Use the base plate of the magazine to push out the slide stop
then the slide and barrel slip off the front
generic .40 through it just to make sure it ran
We took the liberty of cleaning and oiling it prior to the range trip
We ran a list of "who's who" of ammo makers from Winchester
and it didn't find anything it was compelled to complain about
The feed ramp was nicely polished and as long as we held a firm grip and arm
Any smallish gun may stumble if you have a loosey-goosey grip so keep that arm and wrist firm so your autopistol can have something stable to recoil against
it began to rain like the dickens as we started the test
so we didn't actually measure any groups-targets were wet and sorta pulpy
at an honest 15 yards (which was as far as I could get someone to run to post targets in the rain) you could have easily covered the groups with the bottom of a coffee cup
I think the little gun will do much better than that
The RAMI was fast-handling and sure-footed in the hand
Our test gun barked a bit and snapped some in .40 S&W (mostly with the stout loads) but with a 150-grain load at around 950 feet per second or so
And I reckon it will be hard to send this one back
if I could just figure out what "RAMI" means

People lighting candles near a restaurant where a gunman opened fire in Uhersky Brod
A man shot dead eight people in a restaurant in an eastern Czech town yesterday and then killed himself
in the worst peacetime shooting in the country’s history
The interior minister said the attack was done by an “insane murderer” and was not an act of terrorism
The attacker called a national television channel before he started the shooting
and that he had a gun and hostages and that he would deal with it his own way,” said Pavel Lebduska
head of regional broadcasting at Prima channel
He said the man had given his name but the station would not reveal it for the time being
The man fired about 25 rounds as people were eating lunch in the Druzba (Friendship) restaurant in a residential district of Uhersky Brod
a normally quiet town 300km southeast of Prague
A woman wounded in the shooting was taken to hospital
said the man had walked in and started shooting with a handgun
“I immediately ran out through the back door
along with other guests who then called ambulance and police,” he told news website www.idnes.cz
Interior Minister Milan Chovanec said: “We can say this was not a terrorist act,” adding that the attacker was a local man who was at least 60 years old
Mass shootings are very rare in the Czech Republic
National police chief Tomas Tuhy said the incident was the worst on record
Uhersky Brod is a town of 17,000 in the Moravia region
Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said in a statement: “I am shocked by the tragic attack that happened today in Uhersky Brod
I would like to express my deepest sorrow and condolences to the families and relatives of the victims.”

U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- The Czech nation has a long and proud reputation for quality arms manufacture
the British army used both the BREN (“BRnoENfield”) light machine gun as their main section suppressive fire infantry weapon during WWII
After Czechoslovakia was forced to succumb to the influence of the Soviet Union in 1948 and absorbed into the Warsaw Pact, the arms development continued. Two brothers, Josef and František Koucký
and included among them is the “CZ-75,” which debuted
Due to American import laws and the lack of Czech intellectual property protection
this high-capacity 15-shot “Wondernine” handguns was not only unavailable here
they were also copied by other countries without penalty
The Swiss “Sphinx” and the Turks (various manufacturers) possibly built the preponderance of these for the worldwide market
while our own “Springfield Armory” commercial entity offered the “P9” for a bit under a decade and it became the darling of competition shooters in IPSC
The pistol was originally a full-sized service handgun of conventional Browning short recoil tilt-lock design made completely of carbon steel
It uses the annular locking lugs with corresponding recesses in the interior top of the slide to provide mechanical delay during recoil
while the fixed lug below has a kidney-shaped hole that uses the slide stop pin to govern the timing of the unlocking
Some other sources suggest that this is similar to the Browning Hi-Power
as the Hi-Power has a fixed cam lug that is transversely pressed into the frame that governs the unlocking and locking cycle
The Hi-Power’s slide stop pin serves only to locate the rear of the recoil spring guide and is retained by a spring-loaded ball bearing within said guide
The CZ 75 B Handgun also differed from the single-action-only Hi-Power in that it is equipped with a double- and single- action trigger mechanism
with a manual thumb safety that operates in the ergonomically-correct same fashion as both the M1911 and Hi-Power do
This allows for “Condition One” cocked-and-locked carry if one does not want to use the long and heavy trigger D.A
stroke which can reduce first round hit probability
The “problem” with the CZ-75 is that it didn’t have any domestic or international sales potential until after the end of the Cold War
The Warsaw Pact still insisted on its 9X18 Makarov caliber for service pistols
and the 75 was chambered only in 9X19 at that time
The late Jeff Cooper once opined that it was his first choice as a 9mm service pistol
though he loathed the cartridge’s performance forty years ago
it remains one of the most ergonomic high-capacity pistols extant
the pistol’s front frame strap has a tighter radius
making it easier for those with smaller hands to grasp it firmly
The pistol’s raised rear lower grip frame shape also makes it point a bit better than the Hi-Power in my hands
the grip angle also mimicked the most prevalent design
it makes for a very comfortable to use shape
Add to this the very convenient locations of the left-rear mounted thumb safety with its generous thumb-shelf
and the slide stop lever and magazine button in similar familiar locations
little wonder American shooters took to the design so readily
is very soft-shooting and accurate rapid-fire strings are pretty- easy to accomplish
Two other interesting things about the 75s design include a slide that runs inside the frame
while the conventional norm is one that rides outside of the frame rails
as well as a semi-unitized fire control system that incorporates the sear and spring
located with a single spring roll pin as well as the thumb safety pivot pin
The original 75 was replaced by the CZ 75 B Handgun in the early 1990s and remains the currently offered most common variant
This update included the now de rigeur firing pin safety plunger required in the US for most pistols
as well as the squared and serrated trigger guard for which I have little use
The CZ 75 B Handgun remains a very good pistol
but the 75’s fine single-action trigger pull disappeared in the B-model and turned rather creepy
I understand that there are several fine gunsmiths who can make the trigger very good indeed
by re-cutting the sear and hammer engagement points so that they are not undercut
The only other demerit with the piece is that the long double-action first shot means that it’s quite a stretch for the average sized hand’s index finger to use anything but the first pad
Made from precision investment castings for both frame and slide
one German IPSC competitor commented that his personal pistol fired 150,000 rounds of ammunition with only a barrel change to replenish accuracy
so there is good quality indeed in an all-steel pistol with good heat treatment whose recoil-absorbing design structures largely preclude cracking of either frame or slide under lots of use
CZ-USA offers a wealth of other models
and other calibers including the .40 S&W and .45ACP (“CZ-97”)
One special mention is the “Omega” version
that eliminates the unitized fire control in favor of having separately housed components
and it is said that the single-action trigger pull is thus much easier to tune and a bit better out of the box
a new 9mm CZ 75 B Handgun with two magazines and cleaning brush inside its plastic case can be had at a street price generally under $600 (2017)
This compares rather favorably with many of the polymer-framed
It is one of a handful of NATO-approved service pistols that must all be chambered in 9mm for duty use
I also have a “Czech Made” marked CZ 75 B with the old original CZ logo which I think looks much better than their new logo
These were probably contract guns for a police/military force of another country
I have another CZ 75 SC MASSADA with a menorah on the slide
The SC denotes SEMICOMPACT as it has a full-size frame with a compact slide
Acquired both of these from an importer who sells on GunBroker.com
Although I carried a 1911 45 for over 21 years and still love them

This was the first home defense purchase specifically to be used by anyone in our household
it has great shooting characteristics for anyone to shoot well
Ours is the Omega with ambi safety (I’m left
and the safety/decocker offers a little peace of mind for them as newer shooters
I love the fact that it’s kind of old school

it appears that CZ from Czech Republic have also joined the foray into producing a Scout rifle
the Scout rifle concept was meant as “one rifle for all purpose” and works great as a survival rifle of sorts
and feature a detachable magazine for quicker reload
The Scout rifle has once again had a resurgence as of late, and has come into discussion again with the Canadian Rangers rifle program in 2017 requesting for a Scout type rifle in 308 Win and a magazine holding 10 rounds. Eventually Tikka won the procurement with their T3x ARCTIC rifle
CZ introduced this rifle to the commercial market as the CZ 557 Range Rifle
And here we have a closer look at the double stack magazine and its iron sights that are visible even with the factory scope base in place
Here is a long description off CZ Europe’s product page
CZ 557 Range Rifle – a universal rifle from Uherský Brod
the legendary gun guru Jeff Cooper formulated a concept for the Scout Rifle
His ideal was a compact and powerful repeater suitable for hunting and combat
rifle with a total length of up to one meter and weighing less than 3 kg
capable of repeatedly hitting a target the size of a human figure up to 450 meters using mechanical sights
Mentioning this historical fact is not a coincidence – I think Jeff would have liked the new Uherský Brod rifle
Cooper’s vision of a universal rifle is an interesting phenomenon
Many experts and customers were excited about such an idea
there aren’t many mass produced weapons meeting or at least approaching the criteria of a Scout Rifle on the market at all
The reason is simple – to meet all these visionary requirements is not easy
The first real factory-made Scout Rifle was not created until the second half of the 1990s
and it came with the emergence of a new generation of modern materials and technologies
Even then it only just met the requirement for weight
because the 3 kg he aspired for is still a pretty big hurdle for a .308 capable of the required accuracy
The topic of rifles belonging to the Scout Rifle category has recently come to the fore because of a tender for the rearmament of the Canadian Rangers
This distinctive patrol unit operating in hard to reach areas of the Canadian wilderness has required
as a replacement for its outdated military repeaters
a modern universal rifle in the spirit of Jeff Cooper’s concept
Only a bit more embellished with some tried and tested elements of the discarded Lee-Enfields
Supporters of the Scout Rifle concept no doubt sing their thanks to this tender
several new models have been created and tested
which Jeff Cooper would have definitely approved of
Among them is a brand new rifle from Uherský Brod
Now this would have probably impressed Jeff even more
since it is no secret that he had a soft spot for Česká zbrojovka weapons
created by extensively modernizing the popular CZ 550 series
the changes were so significant that a completely new model has been created
The 550s and the 557s share just some structural and functional principles and several minor parts
CZ 557 is a modern repeating rifle with a cylindrical ‘push feed’ bolt
It is locked into the receiver by two symmetrical locking lugs
The firing mechanism is cocked while the bolt is being opened
The 557 is equipped with a fully adjustable trigger mechanism and uses a technologically simple method of attaching the barrel into the receiver
which has a positive effect on high accuracy
Uherský Brod weapons are known to be accurate
it was regarded that concerning technology
the company remained as if was still at the end of the 20th century
A regular customer would probably not have noticed
the new 557 was from the beginning designed to use the latest manufacturing processes
led by the use of modern mill-turn machining centres
Thanks to its sophisticated design and technology
the CZ 557 is not only easier and faster to produce
but can also be easily and quickly adapted to market needs
which began to be created according to the requirements by the Canadian Rangers
of which there are quite a few on the market now
is between 1,042 mm and 1,083 mm in length overall
The weight is about 3.3 kg (an approximate value as it is strongly influenced by properties of a particular blank)
Some versions are equipped with mechanical sights and all allow the attachment of a scope onto a 19 mm dovetail groove on the receiver bridges
All versions also have a fully adjustable trigger mechanism (with the resistance adjustable in the range of 10 to 22 N)
for which you do not need a double set trigger
the basis was a two-position safety without a bolt block
Another safety feature is the indicator in the form of the rear end of the firing pin
which protrudes from the bolt head when the bolt is cocked
There is no need to discuss the cold forged barrels in length; they have long been significantly contributing to the respected accuracy of CZ rifles
The CZ 557 entered the market with a cartridge box
which was also typical of all previous versions
Although there were rumours that Česká zbrojovka had also designed a magazine version
The situation changed only with the arrival of the Range Rifle of .308 Win
which was launched after the completion of the Canadian tender
the Uherský Brod model did extremely well in this tender
During the development of this rifle according to the specifications of the Canadian Rangers
it was essential for Česká zbrojovka to maintain the maximum specifications of the current CZ 557 version
whose length of 520 mm is a well calculated optimum
It is short enough for the weapon not to be too long and long enough for the proper burning of the powder charge in cartridges of the calibre used and to maintain high accuracy
it was clear that the criteria required by Cooper – incidentally
once the standard for infantry weapons intended for combat in trenches – was an unachievable goal
the overall length of the new rifle reached only 1,028 mm
A little was saved by shortening the system
but since it is a rifle with a wooden stock
it is extremely difficult to keep it below 3 kg
much depends on the properties of the particular blank.) Nevertheless
shooters with a weaker constitution will not regret it
because a shot fired from a .308 is not easy
amplified by a new element in the form of a long Weaver mounting rail (Picatinny Rail)
it is nice to see that the middle part of the rifle gained a bit of bulk
Therefore the user does not have to rely on CZ assemblies only and can choose from a substantially wider selection of the optical or electronic sights
In other words – the well-designed mechanical sights (with the option of adjusting the rear sight inclination and with the front sight accentuated by fibre optic) can be used without having to remove the rail
This feature has been tried and tested and it really is no problem
the longitudinal groove in the middle of the mounting rails may even improve results
The magazine – mentioned so far just briefly
the Canadians strictly asked for a capacity of 10 rounds (à la Lee-Enfield)
it is double stacked with a double stack mouth and therefore it is easy to fill and of a reasonable size
The catch is on the front wall of the trigger guard
The lacquered beech stock of American type has two pins on the bottom part of the forend
one is used for attaching a bipod and the other for a loop to attach the sling
The CZ 557 Range Rifle was originally intended as a de facto military weapon
although the Canadian Rangers would use it on bears rather than people
it received a double action trigger in a traditional military style as the basis
with the first resistance between about 12 to 18 N
the trigger mechanism is designed in such a way that after appropriate adjustments
Do consider using the services of a specialist workshop
because the CZ 557 trigger can be set really “sharply”
There is one more significant difference from the current CZ 557: when secured
This rifle is intended for use in bad weather and impenetrable terrain
and in this configuration there is no risk of the bolt being inadvertently opened when you push your way through dense undergrowth
Česká zbrojovka calls the CZ 557 Range Rifle model “a rifle for a real man” and combines it with a photo of a tough guy
This “Cooper” from Uherký Brod is really not for everyone
It is a weapon belonging to the working tool category
of high performance and with great fire capacity
It is ideal to be constantly at hand in real wilderness where you can suddenly come across predators and not necessarily just the four legged variety only
I would not recommend this rifle for Sunday shooters; nonetheless
in addition to the positives mentioned before
experienced users will certainly appreciate its readiness and high accuracy
I really think that Jeff Cooper would really like the CZ 557 Range Rifle and I am sure he certainly would have forgiven those few extra millimetres and grams
which separate it from his ideal – the Scout Rifle
it is undoubtedly a fully-fledged universal rifle that one need not be afraid to entrust his life to
Sadly, this rifle is not available in the US. If you are interested, perhaps you should contact CZ USA and express your interest in purchasing one
