Punctures were problems for both title contenders as Dominik Stříteský won his first ERC event
Words by Luke Barry
Hayden Paddon has emerged as the European Rally Championship favorite after a dramatic Barum Rally Zlín in which title rival Mathieu Franceschi retired and Dominik Stříteský won.
Reigning ERC champion Paddon only finished 13th, but with Franceschi bowing out on Sunday morning (and recording his second non-score of the season with just one dropped score allowed) Paddon is now in the championship box-seat with just two rounds in Wales and Poland remaining.
Paddon’s own title hopes looked to be in tatters at the end of the first day though, as the Hyundai New Zealand driver was forced to stop and change two punctures on what turned out to be Saturday’s final stage.
That dropped him outside the points to 18th overall, with title rival Franceschi up in sixth.
Paddon looked as if he was going to lose major championship ground after the first full day
But the tables turned at the start of the second day, as it was Franceschi’s turn to run into tire trouble. The Škoda driver suffered tire damage on the leg’s first stage, and incredibly picked up another puncture on the next – forcing the visibly distraught Frenchman into retirement with an insufficient number of fully-inflated tires.
“Disappointing weekend, we wanted to come away with more,” Paddon said.
“From a championship perspective it could’ve been worse of course but we don’t want to have to be relying on others’ misfortunes.”
All of the title drama was white noise to Czech championship leader Stříteský though. The 24-year-old settled into an early third behind compatriots Adam Březík and Kopecký, but hit the front after SS5 when pre-event favorite Kopecký stopped to change a puncture.
Dominik Stříteský drove a near-faultless rally
From there Stříteský simply checked out to record a maiden ERC win, despite spinning over the finish-line of the penultimate stage.
Březík eventually finished fourth ahead of the leading non-Škoda driver Filip Mareš (Toyota), while 2022 ERC champion Efrén Llarena was sixth.
Kopecký also suffered a high-speed spin throughout the weekend but recovered to ninth, behind Marczyk and Hermann Neubauer, but ahead of Václav Pech who completed the top-10 on his first rally in an R5 car this decade.

Fly it: If you want to own a piece of aerobatic history
Skip it: If you want to cover long distances
Airshow spectators know these aircraft for the wild
end-over-end gyroscopic maneuvers that have become popular among aerobatic performers around the world
negative-G maneuvers called the lomchevak—which
means headache in the Czech language—was perfected by Zlin pilots in the late 1970s
The brawny Zlin Z 50 was designed and built for the sole purpose of winning international aerobatic competitions
in the 1970s and 1980s where state manufacturers used the competitions to showcase the very best of their aircraft design and manufacturing capabilities
Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) had been at the pinnacle of Eastern aircraft production since the 1930s
The Zlin 50 took aim at the Soviet Union’s then-dominant Yakovlev Yak-50
Lycoming IO-540-powered Zlin debuted in competition in 1976
and two years later it won the top prize in international competition
and Czechoslovakia finished first in the team event
and the Zlin is rated for up to 9 positive and 6 negative Gs
Its full-span ailerons allow it to roll quicker
Aerobatic clubs throughout Europe began purchasing Zlin 50s
and the manufacturer set out to improve them for Western pilots by adding more fuel
and adding frills like airshow smoke systems
But the Zlin 50’s reign atop the competition aerobatic world was brief
The Soviets upped their game with the composite Sukhoi Su-26 that far outperformed everything else
and new entrants like Extra from Germany and CAP from France stepped into the niche market
The implosion of Communism didn’t help Zlin
The company offered different versions of the Zlin 50 for the international market
but by then its best airplane had already been eclipsed by others with even greater performance
Zlin 50s are prized by pilots for their strength
but they’ve largely been relegated to rarities
and answers to obscure aviation trivia questions

Louis CITY SC have loaned Bosnian defender to Czech First League club FC Zlín through June 2024
“We wish Selmir good luck during his loan to Europe,” Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel said
“He will have a great opportunity to get more minutes at a competitive level and help continue his professional growth
FC Zlín is a competitive club in the Czech First League
who has a deep history and recently won the league title.”
has appeared for both CITY SC first team and NEXT Pro team in 2023
The Bosnian defender started and played the full 90 in both U.S
while also appearing in two MLS regular-season games
tallying two assists and helping the team to six wins
the Czech city of Zlín found itself searching for an identity that many felt had been lost during the Communist regime
The modern city developed alongside and because of the Baťa shoe brand
citizens of Zlín galvanized around the idea that their city should be built on shoes
they kick-started a renewed interest in their town’s unique history
The New York Times summed it up: “Czechoslovaks want Thomas Bata
head of the world’s largest footwear company
to come home and help revive the shoe industry that his father created in the Moravian village of Zlín earlier in the century.”
Two notable results of Zlín’s efforts are its Museum of Shoemaking, which boasts a comprehensive collection of Baťa artifacts, and the Baťa Institute
which is housed in two converted factory buildings
The museum showcases both local heritage and influential designers from around the world
while the institute offers an educational experience and immersion in the town’s history
The modern era of that history began in 1894
a small startup in a town of what was then 3,000 people
The company strengthened as a result of Tomáš’s study and implementation of mechanization techniques from around the world
Baťa Shoe Company (also known as the Baťa Shoe Company or simply
Baťa) supplied the Austro-Hungarian army in World War I
Baťa had become the leading manufacturer and marketer of footwear in Czechoslovakia
During the time Tomáš Baťa served as Zlín’s mayor
the number of Baťa employees in Zlín grew from 1,800 to 17,000
The city’s population swelled right alongside the company
so did the need for housing and other facilities in close proximity to Baťa’s factories
The architectural style that developed in Zlín was influenced by those factories as well
The same construction materials were used for both public and private spaces
the garden city movement (an urban planning philosophy in which self-contained communities are surrounded by “greenbelts”) played a role in the town’s layout
The hope was that those green spaces would help residents feel less penned in by the brick structures in which they worked and lived
In addition to bringing the world quality footwear
Baťa brought its employees excellent perks
introducing in 1923 what is believed to be the first employee profit-sharing program
but individual entrepreneurs with a significant stake in the business beyond their own employment
The company continued to grow after Baťa’s death in 1932
Baťa had stores and factories in 38 countries and over 65,000 employees
and nearly all industry was halted as infrastructure was destroyed
When Zlín was liberated by Soviet and Romanian armies in 1945
Baťa’s surviving relatives (and co-founders) had relocated to North America
leaving the town that Baťa built without a Baťa
The new Communist regime took over management of Zlín and Baťa factories
nationalizing the company and even changing the name of the city to Gottwaldov
after the first communist president of Czechoslovakia
As the company continued to grow on a global scale
The city of Zlín was in effect abandoned by the industry that had given birth to it
Bata returned to Zlín to do his part to help the city reclaim its legacy
Though his return did not ultimately kick-start the shoe industry in the city
it did energize its citizens to revitalize their history
still exists,” says Silvie Lečíková
the marketing manager for Zlín’s Museum of Southeast Moravia
“Most of the buildings raised before World War II
including the houses for employees of the Baťa company
and some still serve their purpose.”
In addition to the notable structures that survived the war (including the aforementioned hospital
today Zlín’s museums and educational institutions are focused on telling the city’s own fascinating story
the influence of which remains palpable in the spirit of its people
“One simply cannot live in Zlín and not feel its history,” Lečíková says

Designed by Studio Loom on the Moon, the design exhibition is located in the now disengaged chateau park, on the site of the Zlín Castle. A series of multimedia installations is sprawled across an area of 36,000 sqm on the historic castle’s park—titled Encyclodepdia
While the former two are conceived as long-term exhibits
Enclyclopedia, located to the south of the castle, is a curved wooden wall displaying historical perspectives laid out by Czech writer Pavel Kosatík, whose work focuses on the modern history of Czech Republic and Slovakia
The 40 m long wall meanders around existing trees on the site, creating an internal space, which allows the users to experience the display on its concave plywood interior surface, while on the exterior a mirror—a polished steel sheet, clads it. A combination of illustrations and texts highlight significant events in Czech history through a sequential timeline
creating a dialogue between different moments in history
Imerse is a screen facing the southern façade of the castle
it represents a zoomed-in catalogue of the city's history with a range of comparative lenses—across different periods
Additionally, it features transformative developments through the course of the city’s inception—the Bata Boom, the introduction of the railways, significant instances of rural life etc. The resultant film is a collection of paintings
each of which forms singular frames for the film
whose inner side (facing the former) is lined with mirror-polish steel sheet
while the side facing the castle acts as the screen for display
Statements is dispersed across the park on the north side of the castle
as a constellation of amoebic mirrored surfaces
The ground-hugging mirrored platforms reflect the tree tops
while simultaneously celebrating the cycle of time through the sound composition it plays
The sound installation is an auditory manifestation of solar anomalies and patterns—like changing seasons
solstices and equinoxes—derived by mapping the sound of bells in the belfries of the region
toll in sync with the solar calendar that encompasses the patterns and anomalies.
a concealed speaker rings the musical composition

The integration of the three components: mirrors
sound and light—creates an abstract and ethereal map of the movement of the sun and stars of the Zlín region
and therefore its existence is confined to the place and time it inhabits
The series of three exhibits that constitutes the Mirrors of Zlín is thus a record of place
and transformation that not only engages its users in an immersive understanding of the city’s history but also revives the hitherto abandoned park it occupies

was pleased to make his first official visit to the southeast Moravian region of Zlin
Ambassador King plans to visit all fourteen regions of the Czech Republic during his tenure
and has instituted an embassy program for diplomats and staff to do the same by regularly traveling “Beyond Prague.” After ten months in office
Ambassador King has already visited six regions of the country
He explained his objective as follows: “It occurs to me that 80 percent of Czechs live outside of greater Prague
and we [Embassy officials] spend too much time in the capital city and not enough time out in the country.” Mr
King believes that the legacy of his three-year term as U.S
Ambassador will be “improving and growing the economic relations between the United States and the Czech Republic.”
They discussed potential economic cooperation
and also spoke about the 100th anniversary of an independent Czechoslovakia and the centennial of U.S.-Czech bilateral relations
Cunek invited the Ambassador to view the original office of Tomas Bata
the renowned founder of the Bata shoe company
and showed him the regional capital from the roof of the seat of the regional government
which is known as “Bata’s Skyscraper.” Later
introduced to Ambassador King how legendary Czech entrepreneur Bata planned beyond just his business
and how he positively influenced the development of the city of Zlin and the lives of its residents
Ambassador King found it interesting to learn that Tomas Bata
the Ambassador was impressed “by people’s interest in growing and expanding the entrepreneurial spirit that in this area is represented and exhibited by Tomas Bata.”
During a visit to the Center of Polymeric Systems of the Tomas Bata University
the Ambassador was particularly impressed by the research and development the institution has achieved since its establishment only 17 years ago
Ambassador King noted that: “Czech history would tell us that Czechs are famous for their golden hands
is in high technology and that is exactly what this university is trying to do.” The Ambassador also appreciated the university’s cooperation with U.S
universities and use of U.S.-made equipment
Ambassador King concluded his visit to the region in the city of Uhersky Brod
where he appreciated the friendliness of the local people: “I come from the middle of the western part of the United States

22-year-old local driver Erik Cais was poised to win his first ever ERC event
Erik Cais threw away Barum Rally Zlín victory on the final stage as he rolled out of the contest
handing Jan Kopecký an historic 10th win on the rally
and assumed the lead of the ERC at the season’s midway point as defending champion and erstwhile series leader Alexey Lukyanuk crashed his Citroën C3 Rally2 in testing and wasn’t able to start the Barum Rally Zlín
Filip Mareš rounded out the podium in third
who has won every single Barum Rally Zlín since 2015
was quickest on Friday evening’s street stage and duly set about stamping his authority on an event he knows so well the following morning
opening up an eight-second lead over old Intercontinental Rally Challenge for Mikkelsen at first service
The local driver was adjusting to tackling his home event in a four-wheel-drive car for the first time and soon found a rhythm
moving into the overnight lead with a stunning effort in the darkness of SS9 to beat Kopecký by 7.9s and establish a 2.1s advantage
Six stages remained on Sunday and perhaps natural order was expected to be restored
Quickest on both of Sunday’s first two stages
Cais really stamped his authority on SS12 Májová with a time that was a scarcely believable 13s better than Kopecký’s – and Kopecký was a strong 8s clear of next-quickest Mikkelsen
“I think he deserved to win,” said a stunned Kopecký when he reached the end of the final stage and learned that Cais had crashed
changing conditions first day today this last stage also
DirtFish spoke to Erik Cais ahead of the 2020 ERC season - his first in a Rally2 car - about his rallying aims
“Yesterday we had a nice fight with Andreas and Erik and from last [run of] Pindula [yesterday] he was too fast
But it’s a shame because he [Cais] really deserved that win.”
Mikkelsen’s second place earned him his second ERC podium of the season on his first event alongside Jonas Andersson
as Mikkelsen and Ola Fløene parted company after Rally di Roma last month
Mikkelsen’s co-driver for his next event
hasn’t been confirmed but Andersson – who usually navigates for Ole Christian Veiby – is now eligible to compete in the WRC again following the suspension he and Veiby received for breaking COVID-19 protocols before Rally Portugal
Andersson’s ban lasted for three months while Veiby still has another three months left to serve before he can compete again in the world championship
Norbert Herczig and Mareš were locked in an intense fight for third place
separated by just 0.6s ahead of the final stage
Mareš has form on final stages of Barum Rally Zlín
having beaten Chris Ingram by 0.3s in 2019 and taking the ERC1 Junior title in the process
and repeated the trick again in 2021 to defeat Herczig
However had Mareš not checked into the first time control of the rally one-minute late
he would have comfortably secured third in his Škoda
Mikołaj Marczyk finished fifth ahead of another tight final-day battle
Efrén Llarena – who’s having a stellar season so far – was a touch off the pace in the Czech Republic and found himself defending from an inspired Callum Devine who was punching in his most impressive performance of the season to date
Llarena lost what became sixth to Devine on SS13 of 15 but retook the spot on the penultimate stage
Devine chose a slicker compound tire in the damp SS15 conditions and ended up 13.4s behind at the finish
Yoann Bonato and Martin Koči completed a top 10 which didn’t feature Hyundai junior Jari Huttunen – driving the usual MRF entry that’s occupied by Craig Breen – as he ran wide wide
slid the rear-left of his Hyundai off the road and felled a tree
Simon Wagner was another casualty as he was running as high as fourth before a puncture led to his retirement
The final stage was canceled for all competitors that started behind Kopecký as Cais’ crashed Fiesta was blocking the road

Bulgaria receives first three Zlin 242Ls
the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence launched a tender for the purchase of four light propeller training aircraft
A contract for four Zlin 242L training aircraft was signed on 4 March 2020 with the Czech company Zlin Aircraft
The value of the contract is € 2,1 million
to the Bulgarski Voenno Vzdushni Sili (BVVS
It is expected that the fourth and last Zlin 242L will be delivered to the at the end of this week
The Zlins departed from Zlin airport Otrokovice (Czechia) and arrived at Dolna Mitropolia/12 Air Base in the late afternoon
The new training aircraft belong to the 12th Air Training Wing (UAGr)
but is has not been reported to which individual sqaudron
The Wing operates L-39ZA jet trainers with Utchebna Avio Eskadrilla L-39 and Pilatus PC-9 turboprop training aircraft with Utchebna Avio Eskadrilla PC9

European champion Llarena crashes out of Rally Zlín Jan Kopecký remains on target for seven in a row on his home event
Words by Alasdair Lindsay
Newly crowned European Rally Champion Efrén Llarena has crashed out of Barum Rally Zlín only three stages in
Llarena had wrapped up the title before the rally began courtesy of Simone Tempestini’s non-participation
mathematically securing the championship in the process
But his first outing as champion-in-waiting has ended in disaster
going off the road and crashing into a tree on the wet Držková test
The impact was sufficient that the engine from his Škoda Fabia Rally2 evo was ejected from the chassis
Llarena and co-driver Sara Fernández were able to get out of their crashed Fabia
with Llarena walking unaided to an ambulance for checks
— eWRC-results (@eWRCresults) August 27, 2022
MRF team manager Vivek Ponnusamy said that an issue with Llarena’s car
“It’s not Efren’s mistake; something happened to the car,” said Ponnusamy
Ponnusamy also confirmed that the substantial damage to Llarena’s stricken car will prevent him from restarting on Sunday
Držková proved to be a typically challenging Barum stage
with earlier rainfall making the stage wet and slippery
a nine-time winner in Zlín and currently on a seven-in-a-row streak on the event
mastered the conditions to go 18.4s faster than anyone else before the red flag flew
A challenge from Simon Wagner looked to be brewing but he was also caught out by Držková
Tom Kristensson had also stopped earlier in the stage than Llarena
while Kopecký’s main rival in the Czech championship
Erik Cais had nearly won this event last year before crashing on the last stage but is already 26.1s off the lead – and is at a loss to explain how Kopecký dominated the Držková test that had caught Llarena out
“I don’t know,” said Cais of how Kopecký had pulled off his fastest time
The interruption means the current leading order is somewhat unclear
Miklós Csomós isn’t registered for ERC points but had taken the lead on stage two
taking advantage of running far down the road order as a non-priority driver to traverse Brezová in drier conditions than the other frontrunners
He hasn’t had a chance to run Držková yet due to the red flag and may well end up with a notional time

The Kiwis always knew the sixth championship event would be challenging given the bumpy tarmac stages with unpredictable grip
which were made even harder because of the rain
After being the 10th fastest on Friday’s late run of the popular Zlin superspecial stage
Paddon then came through Saturday’s four stages in seventh overall and 13sec off championship rival Mathieu Franceschi
"We always knew it was going to be tough as the Czech Rally is one of the most challenging on the ERC calendar," Paddon said
"We focused on trying to have a clean rally and make no mistakes
Things went relatively smoothly until the rain on Saturday afternoon
and when they changed to a couple of rain tyres
"We stopped to change the first puncture but later in the stage had another puncture
"That cost us the best part of four minutes and dropped us down to 18th in the standings and out of the points."
the pair fought their way back up the leaderboard
improving a position stage by stage until they held 13th place by the rally’s end to get back into a points-earning position
The third-fastest time on the bonus points-earning power stage netted them a very welcome three extra points
Paddon now has 95 points to Franceschi’s 82 with two rounds to go
"Sunday was all about damage limitation ..
as we tried to get back into the points for the top 15 finishers
"We also pushed as hard as we could on the power stage to get some bonus points
which we were also able to do — third place on the power stage was a good result to come away with
which is obviously very unfortunate for him and not what we want to see for any of our competitors
but it puts us in the position where we were able to salvage some points from the weekend and take the positive of extending our championship lead."
Paddon now heads to the Rali Ceredigion in Wales from August 30 to September 1
Paddon has competed at the event once before

Developers PWDT and Adrián Nagy-Hinst have released a freeware Zlin Z-142 for X-Plane. PWDT is well known in the X-Plane freeware community and has previously released a fantastic Yak-18T, while Adrian Nagy-Hinst has previously released a well known Carenado Cessna 152 Mod for X-Plane
The PWDT and NHAdrian representation includes a full PBR 3D model
highly detailed textures and a Setup Sheet that acts as a payload manager
Those who are reluctant to try the Zlin because of its Eastern European avionics will be able to switch with a Western world panel
The Zlin Z-142 is derived from the Zlin 42 and was designed in Hungary during the 1970’s
It is the most sold iteration of the Zlin Z-42 family of aircraft
able to pass most aerobatics and that can sustain inverted flight for close to 3 minutes
The latter Zlin Z-242 is still in production
The PDWDT and NHAdrian Zlin Z-142 can be found for free on the X-Plane Forums and is definitely a must have for all X-Plane pilots

I am in love with a Czech ballerina of a ‘certain age’
Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder
few deny she’s the most graceful and I have been holding her close as much as possible lately
For the youngsters among you who’ve never heard of her and her sisters
in my youth the Zlin-26 family comprised rare
exotic and almost mythical Eastern European beauties
The constant companions of my boyhood heroes Neil Williams
They were the top competition and display aeroplanes of the 1960s
and I grew up watching them gracefully swing and swoop around the sky
They flew rings around our Tiger Moths and Chipmunks
and even the flashy imported Franco-Belgian Stampes with their simple
cobbled-together Rollason two-lever fuel injection systems
Zlins introduced to British aerobatics their flabbergasting Czech signature manoeuvre
The Zlins’ Walter engines sounded wonderful too
they chortled on the ground but snarled into the air
sounding for all the world like mini-Merlins
I watched and admired them as they flowed and tumbled through their energetic display routines
I never even dreamed of flying one?that was way beyond my London suburb ambitions
The most I could hope for then was maybe to have a part share in a simple and inexpensive autogyro
One Monday in June the lovely couple that is Tim and Emma Cooper visited me to discuss another aviation topic
You will know Tim from his excellent Pilot series ‘Under African Skies’
“We have a Zlin and would like some help to improve our aerobatics
Would you come and fly with us to give us a few tips?”
As you get older making friends becomes less easy
but I knew at first meeting that the Coopers would quickly become firm buddies
With them I am getting to know their aeroplane
and having an absolute ball into the bargain so
2018 will always be ‘the Zlin summer’ for me
a million things more important to do (including two aeroplanes in urgent need of rebuild)
and I’m way behind with my chores and admin
but I have learned that chances like this rarely come around a second time
Also I have vowed never to miss any more great opportunities
When I had an island in Africa and an airstrip all I wanted to do was to fly around inverted – a hangover from schooldays air experience flights in Chipmunks
my wife Emma and I knew we needed another aeroplane
Ideally the aircraft should have the potential to earn its own keep so
It would have to be a taildragger – in 8,000 hours of flying Emma had just a handful of hours in aeroplanes with proper undercarriages
It had to have a sensible range but only needed two seats
It would have to be able to carry minimal luggage for a few days away
Spinner who loves flying and fits in a small
It would have to be excellent at aerobatics – a machine which would teach us how to fly
Ideally it would be a classic – it would be joining a stable that included a 1930 Riley race car and a Mk 2 Jag
It needed spare parts availability and sensible running costs
We started with a long list and it didn’t take a great effort to whittle this down to either a Decathlon or a Zlin
The Zlin was a little less practical but it could work with optional tip tanks for touring
and spare knickers and a toothbrush stowed in the parachute cut-outs in the seats
The clincher for us was the association with the late
If the Zlin were a car then it would be a sixties Ferrari 250 GTO
Regular readers may have seen my single-seat
constant-speed Zlin 326 air test in Pilot September 2009 but
I only got a one-hour flight to assess its qualities
Now I have had a much better chance to become acquainted with its two-seat sister
a beautifully restored and low-hours example of a 326 with a lighter
five and six aerobatic sorties per day in beautiful summer weather with temperatures in the upper twenties and low thirties
The whole affair had serious echoes of the Battle of Britain
glistening contrails criss-crossing the wide blue vault above us
in a tailwheel aeroplane and that six cylinder in-line engine
plus a trio of joy-flying Boultbee Spitfires coming and going in clouds of propwash dust
In some ways it’s been like that movie Groundhog Day
filled a water bottle and dashed out of the door
We flew all day until we were out of either fuel or daylight (or both)
showered away the salt and tumbled into bed
One day I didn’t get back until nearly 11 p.m.
although both Tim and I have had to take a couple of days out (despite the ongoing frustratingly glorious weather) to write Pilot articles
and we also explored tail slides and other recoveries from botched manoeuvres… initially deliberately
The aerobatics proper started with simple loops and ballistic aileron rolls
before progressing to the slow (axial) and barrel varieties
Then we could start joining up these manoeuvres to make combination figures like quarter clovers
Stall turns followed?to the right of course: this is a European engine?followed by exploring and extending the vertical up line for humpty-bumps (tight radius
canopy-down pull-overs) and quarter vertical rolls
The Walter engine’s dual-carburettor inverted fuel system helps here
warning you with its famous ‘Zlin cough’ the moment you go beyond vertical
I became adventurous and experimented with combining half vertical rolls and push-humpties
before going on to avalanches (a tight loop with a full positive flick-roll on the top) and my favourite figure (extremely difficult in my usual Fournier RF4D) the quarter vertical roll
Then it was time to explore sustained inverted flight (this aeroplane’s forté) and knife-edges
Bewo’s long control column is great for reducing stick loads at normal speeds and allows great precision
and it needs to go a long way forwards when you’re upside-down
At first I found myself grasping the big round aluminium ball on its top because
with my fingers around the normal handgrip
I just couldn’t push it quite far enough forward
but an extra lumbar cushion soon solved that problem
I also initially found it hard to keep the nose up in knife-edged flight
and with similar configuration and power to our familiar DHC¬1 Chipmunk
The Zlin¬26 family was obviously designed as elementary/primary/basic trainers
but the Czech aerobatic aces soon realised that certain characteristics made them capable of so much more
The fuel and oil systems permitting four minutes of inverted flight
the swept¬back leading edges and their beneficial effect on flick¬rolling
its clean lines and drag¬reducing retractable main undercarriage legs and consequent increase in vertical climb performance
the gyroscopic effect of that long fuselage nose with its propeller set well forward
all combine to give Zlins remarkable aerobatic versatility
keeping the airspeed below about 110 knots (200kph) and the g loads within +4/¬2 then its handling
capability and control forces are not too dissimilar (although the much bigger rudder is heavier and does need constant attention)
It is only when you start diving to gain speed and pulling serious g for some of the more adventurous manoeuvres that the aeroplane’s character almost transforms
The controls become heavy in all three axes
so flying a six¬minute sequence can have the same muscular effect as an hour¬long gym workout
While Zlins have an airframe life of 3,000 hours at the usual +6/¬3g limits
increased limits of +8/¬4.5g were permissible but with a greatly reduced 100¬hour airframe life
Clearly this is what the Czechs did when they flew their Zlins in international unlimited competitions (there were more than forty of them at the 1970 Hullavington WAC) and presumably that is why the sixties pilots complained of heavy control forces
smacking the controls into all corners of the cockpit with vigour and violence
sorely abusing this graceful aeroplane in pursuit of the square corners suggested by the Aresti notation
This aeroplane simply does what you ask of it
I regard the Chipmunk’s light and well¬harmonised controls as among the best
The Zlin’s controls are definitely heavier
and much heavier at higher speeds (the reason for those then¬innovative spades) although their harmony is nearly spot¬on and their effectiveness is amazing
The Zlin’s huge and very capable rudder has no aerodynamic assistance
so I used full left rudder trim in the climb and needed to ensure it was re¬set to neutral before starting aerobatics
Even more so than in a Tiger Moth or Spitfire
you need to get your rudder inputs just right
and all the time – varying them with every change in airspeed and power
The big difference is the Zlin’s pedal forces
I was also surprised to find the Zlin’s spin different from that of the Chipmunks
Stampes and Fourniers to which I am more accustomed
In recovery the Zlin’s rudder and elevator forces are really quite heavy
and it seemed to me to behave more ponderously
like a more massive aeroplane – in the erect spin at least
Mindful of the handbook’s cautions about keeping the tick¬over rpm below 600
being prepared to kill the engine by switching off the magnetos
we limited our initial explorations to just two turns each way
but recovery was completely predictable within approximately half a turn
if you don’t want to lose height during aerobatics you need to keep the Zlin’s airspeed below its maximum full¬throttle level speed – two¬up at 4,500 feet this was around 195kph
Doing so limits the control forces in all axes to reasonable levels but restricts you to standard level manoeuvres
Luckily this Zlin’s propeller is well matched to its airspeed band
This means you can leave the throttle wide open (giving approximately 80 per cent power at 4,500 feet) provided you control the airspeed
that removes one of the three rudder variables
so you need only to coordinate with aileron inputs and airspeed changes
for the longer vertical lines you need an initial speed¬building dive
with attendant throttle and rudder juggling
but well before you’re going straight up you can open the throttle again
I’ve found you need increasing forward stick as you climb (if anybody can explain the aerodynamic theory I’d be interested) but otherwise the length of the vertical line seems only to depend on your entry airspeed
half¬down roll push¬humpties in this aeroplane
although you really do need lots of rudder if you leave the power on over the top
Later 526F versions have 160hp and that magic Avia constant¬speed propeller
they can accomplish a full 360¬degree upward vertical roll
but I’m not even going to attempt one two¬up with just 140hp and a fixed¬pitch prop
I can only find two areas where caution is needed
The aforementioned spin behaviour may be one
although that’s no practical problem because a) competition spins never require more than two turns and b) if you fly it sympathetically you’ll never get into an unintentional one
The other is the Zlin’s very clean airframe
Like an Extra or Fournier (or their Slingsby progeny)
it does accelerate spectacularly when going downhill
The tricks are: always start with the nose higher than you think it should be
and keep pulling whenever it’s below the horizon
Those long wings cause such little induced drag that you don’t lose energy
and that low drag makes vertical figures a doddle
I can only reiterate the advice of every other aviation journalist who’s sampled one
Tim did count-time my first super-slow roll at twenty seconds?although I suspect it was probably really nearer fifteen?so I was eventually getting the hang of flying along sideways
One day we flew six sorties for more than three hours of flying
And of course it took a while to flush out the adrenalin from my system with beer
They have generously shared their aeroplane with friends
One was the local aerobatic ace who was more familiar with modern Zlins; another capable companion was BA 747-400 colleague Chris
who demonstrated his skilful repertoire while I just relaxed and admired his flying
Then there was his seventeen-year-old daughter
whom I took for her first ever aerobatic flight
She didn’t say very much during the briefing
although she intimated a keenness to do quite a lot
I always insist that just one or two manoeuvres are quite enough for a first aeros flight
but Becs was in the early stages of her PPL syllabus and said she wanted more
After starting gently with an aileron roll and a 3.5g loop
in the end we flew two of every manoeuvre I could accomplish in the aeroplane so far
This ended up as half-an-hour of her whooping and laughing with delight through everything I could do
half upward vertical rolls with canopy-up humpty-bumps and fifteen seconds of inverted straight-and-level flight
It was one of those unforgettably delightful flights
I’m certain we have another aerobatic pilot in the making
I have been a bit like that young supply teacher we’ve all encountered
only reading up tomorrow’s lesson in Rob Dorsey’s notes and Alan Cassidy’s book the night before – although I think I have managed to stay ahead of the game so far
I have improved both my repertoire and my technique
thanks to the Zlin’s inverted systems and remarkable capabilities
Because we were going all the way up to 4,500 feet before starting
there was the ever-present problem of getting down again expeditiously without shock-cooling the engine
for the first descending 2,000 feet I was happy to loop
barrel-roll and quarter-clover our way downwards at half throttle
but below that a simple speed increase seemed the best way to scrub off height efficiently
Never one to miss the chance of showing off to a beautiful woman
well of course you can easily fly aeros without any power at all
I am definitely old enough and wise enough to know that those words (or any similar phrase) said anywhere near an aircraft should ring loud and jangling alarm bells; but I couldn’t hear myself for the rush of blood in my ears
dived to 230kph and pulled firmly and steadily into a loop
All went well until we approached the inverted
by which time the roaring slipstream had dwindled to a sigh and the controls had become slack in my hands
I knew I was in real trouble when the propeller disc morphed into individual blades flicking past
Then there was silence and a single blade sticking up ahead in mocking admonition
unresponsive controls to regain a sensible attitude
a little airspeed and the merest smidgen of self-respect
my headphones rang with the melody of Emma’s laughter
I now know that a) it is possible to defecate upwards and b) you can’t fly power-off aerobatics in every aeroplane
But otherwise the willing Zlin will do virtually everything else you ask of it
Mostly that I?universally acknowledged to be (by family and friends at least) the world’s most parsimonious man
no fewer than four unserviceable aeroplanes to fix
and a wife I hadn’t seen for thirteen weeks?would nevertheless drop absolutely everything for days on end in favour of flying aerobatics in sunny weather and a strong
And I say this as a former 33-year airline pilot who never exceeded 25 degrees of bank
while I would sell my soul for an hour in the Coopers’ Zlin
I find it difficult to explain that attraction in ways a non-aerobatic pilot might understand…
Surely flying should not be just about droning from hither to yon in a single dimension?however sizzling the speed or fancy the avionics?clearly that could never supplant the sheer visceral pleasure of throwing an unbreakable aeroplane joyously around the skies
carving curves in the air like a delinquent adolescent squealing smoky donuts in a stolen car
There is nothing in life like the thrill of aerobatics for making you feel free
master (or mistress) of your destiny – Master of the Universe
Please don’t waste your hours droning around in just the single
flying track lines to some other airfield for that £100 coffee
Don’t go right from getting your hard-won PPL to the slog of an IMC Rating
Break those surly bonds of gravity… dance aloft on laughter-silvered wings
Explore all three dimensions: go and fly some aerobatics
You don’t have to get the rating or even fly aeros solo
Just go up with an instructor to fly a single loop or aileron roll?then see how you feel
If you only ever want to fly aeros with an instructor for confidence
The human body wasn’t designed to be thrown around the sky?not yours
go and experience the god-like sensation of turning our world upside-down
Be a real three-dimensional pilot for once in your life
like me you might become a lifelong addict… and frankly
