Collapse of East European market and pressure from Asian competitors hits profits for textile recycler
Clothing/Footwear, Sustainable
Soex Group – one of only five European textile waste collectors
sorters and recyclers currently equipped to handle annual volumes of over 80,000 tons annually – has filed an application to open insolvency proceedings under self-administration with the district court in Reinbek
The company is seeking a new investor and restructuring expert Oliver Dankert has taken over management of the company as chief insolvency officer and is setting up a merger and acquisition purchasing process
Business operations are to continue without restrictions and wages and salaries have been secured up to and including November 2024
Soex put the reasons for the insolvency filing down to traditional markets in Eastern Europe having collapsed and competitors from Asia simultaneously putting pressure on the market with their excess capacity
This had led to significant short term losses in earnings and liquidity for the company
which in previous years achieved annual sales of around €460 million
“We are well prepared for upcoming legal developments
including the planned extended producer responsibility for textile waste in the EU and the introduction of separate textile waste collections in 2025,” said managing director Fred Ponath
“These changes offer Soex an opportunity for further growth in the area of sustainable textile recycling.”
A preliminary administrator has been appointed for the German companies Soex Textil-Verwertungsgesellschaft
based in Ahrensburg with around 130 employees
based in Bitterfeld-Wolfen with around 300 employees
also based in Bitterfeld-Wolfen with nine employees
and I:Collect based in Ahrensburg with 17 employees
Soex Processing Middle East is not affected by the self-administration procedure and no insolvency application has been filed for it

German HR SaaS company Zvoove Group has acquired Fortytools
a commercial cleaner SaaS startup based in Ahrensburg
Currently used by some 500 cleaning companies
Fortytools' SaaS model is an app-led play that simplifies small business admin like invoicing and time recording
Zvoove says the acquisition will enhance IT functions available within its enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform for the cleaning industry
Until now Zvoove's software lacked a sure-fire draw for smaller cleaning firms
with its ERP functionality more often appealing to larger companies
An industry poll last year revealed digitisation is a priority for an estimated 83% of cleaning service providers
It's also the case that Zvoove has a broader operational remit as it serves temporary staff recruitment in all areas of field work
Zvoove previously acquired the Dutch commercial cleaners' communication platform Leviy.
Oliver Muhr
we often hear from smaller cleaning service providers that they are interested in a sleek solution
"We are very pleased that the acquisition of Fortytools will enable us to provide an easy-to-use and intuitive ERP-SaaS solution to these businesses
Fortytools is the perfect addition to our existing product portfolio."
Sebastian Gauck
added: "Our vision has always been to make the benefits of digitalization available to smaller businesses
We are delighted that we can concentrate on this even more in the future with the help of Zvoove's great expertise
I am particularly pleased that our clients will benefit directly from this thanks to new solutions for quality management and recruitment and that we will soon be able to offer them complete payroll services."

Vision and Automation Solutions for Engineers and Integrators Worldwide
Germany) is making it easier to connect machine vision applications
Two imaging companies—Basler AG (Ahrensburg
Germany)—have launched products to make such integration far less time consuming and expensive
They have done this by joining a diverse set of companies with products that are integrated with Siemens’ Industrial Edge ecosystem—software and services to access
analyze and store data from IoT automation devices located throughout the plant floor.
Products from the two imaging companies will also be integrated into Siemens’ SIMATIC S7-1500 System
a neural processing module for the SIMATIC S7-1500 controller and the ET 200MP I/O system
This integration will reduce the complexity of integrating machine vision products into AI-enabled industrial automation applications.
“Integrating cameras into automation currently is a cumbersome process
requiring a high level of specific expertise to match compatible components
It is expensive and is often implemented on standalone ‘islands’ (e.g.
dedicated industrial PCs),” Siemens explains in a new release
ecosystem manager for Industrial Edge solutions at Siemens
"We collaborate in open ecosystems and look for partnerships to combine our Siemens domain knowhow in automation with those from strong players in the market that make it easier for our customers to adapt new technologies with industry proven solutions."
Basler launched the Basler Vision Connector
which will be available as an app in the Siemens Industrial Edge Marketplace by the end of the year
It defines a standard interface to connect Basler’s GigE cameras throughout Siemens’ automation portfolio
The basis for the Basler Connector is the company’s pylon SDK.
The software’s functionality includes vignetting correction
sharpness indicator and bandwidth manager.
The AI-enabled app automates detection of logical and structural defects on product surfaces.
"By bringing the first application for visual quality inspection to Siemens Industrial Edge
our two companies help customers use AI to detect both structural and logical defects on objects and thus improve the quality of components
and use because it does not require programming or an in-depth knowledge of machine vision
customers do not need third-party stand-alone solutions," explains Meier from Siemens
Linda Wilson joined the team at Vision Systems Design in 2022
She has more than 25 years of experience in B2B publishing and has written for numerous publications

Axel Springer opened a highly modern printing plant in the Berlin district of Spandau 30 years ago
Environmental protection and sustainability already played an important role back then
We are all familiar with the black fingertips that come from spending time browsing through or reading a newspaper
producing a newspaper is not the most environmentally friendly of processes—starting with the felling of trees to make paper
and including other steps in the production chain like transport and post press
But publishers have always been aware of that
The main question is: how did they and do they deal with this
German chancellor Helmut Kohl opened the newest printing plant of the Axel Springer publishing house before 700 guests of honor in Berlin-Spandau
At the time Europe’s most modern printing house
it cost 500 million Deutschmarks to build—worlds away from the four million Marks for the first Springer printing plant in Hamburg
it was the job of 600 workers to make sure around 40,000 newspapers left the presses every hour
This was guaranteed by a monster plant that weighed just over 3,000 tons
The entire site measures 40,000 square meters
and the built-up area is 24,000 square meters
The plant took only two-and-a-half years to finish—from the start of construction work in July 1991
through Friede Springer laying the foundation stone in June 1992
Appropriate for such an occasion and for the times (three years following German reunification)
Chancellor Kohl praised not only the technical innovation of the plant but also the publishing decision
especially bearing in mind the principles that were so important to the company founder
Kohl said: “Axel Springer’s vision has fulfilled itself
He never lost sight of his goal to see Germany once again united.” Chairman of the Board Günter Prinz emphasized that “the company is investing in the free word and in a free and reunited Germany with its old capital city Berlin”
The printing plant that preceded the new one in Spandau was located in Kochstrasse in Kreuzberg and formed the company’s Berlin publishing base together with the golden high-rise in 1966
and work in the printing plant got underway in the early summer of 1961
the Berlin Wall was erected a mere 40 feet away from the publishing house.
Helmut Kohl alluded to another idea that played a role in the 1993 investment in Spandau
saying: “A forward-thinking and highly modern technology is being brought together here with the greatest possible environmental sustainability.” The publishing house employees were able to read about what he was referring to in the company’s in-house magazine Springer aktuell
gave detailed information about technical parameters related to the plant’s environmental impact
Energy: The publishing house spent three million Deutschmarks on its own combined heat and power plant with cogeneration
The heat generated through combustion was not wasted but used to heat the rooms and cool the machines (refrigerator principle)
The environmental advantage of this was that the exhaust air contained only a third of the permitted pollutant levels
Noise: Highly efficient sound absorbers led to the rotary presses having their nickname changed from “the roaring giants” to “relatively quiet giants”
The printers also worked behind a thick glass wall for noise protection
Water: To make sure the machines did not overheat
they were cooled using water in a closed cycle
Only evaporation losses were compensated for
Oil or gasoline lost by delivery trucks during loading was filtered out before any substances could reach the sewer
Material recycling: In the Spandau printing plant
20 different recyclable materials were separated
And the aluminum from 760,000 printing plates was recycled every year
returns) that collected every month were used as raw material for new sheets in the paper factory.
Recycling printing ink: Old inks were reconditioned in a special plant
Then the ink was vigorously mixed through and added to fresh ink at a ratio of 1:10
Recycling detergents: Petroleum-based detergents were used to remove printing ink and paper dust from rollers and cylinders
The dirty concentrate was filtered and then reused again and again
150,000 liters if detergents per year that would otherwise have to be disposed of as hazardous waste
but this attention to environmental factors was by no means a rare thing in the history of Axel Springer’s printing locations
When the publisher laid the foundation stone for the offset printing plant in Essen-Kettwig on September 5
the day on which this printing plant is inaugurated
is the start of the ‘Week of Environmental Protection’
I can say proudly and with gratitude that we have been able to fulfil the requirements rightly placed on a newly constructed business site in cooperation with the responsible authorities.” The new printing plant
was to be heated using natural gas and liquid gas butane
Its chimneys would emit pure steam without any sulfur residues
and its wastewater was to be neutralized in a plant that removes all acid residues
a re-cooling plant was installed that ensured the water heated up in the other plants was cooled and reused.
the traditional letterpress was replaced by offset printing
while conventional lead type made way for photosetting
Processes that had once taken hours only required minutes now
the procedures were also kinder to the environment
1984 saw the Ahrensburg site near Hamburg get an offset printing plant
giving it a top position in printing in terms of environmental protection
it was said—both by reducing the emissions of harmful substances and by recycling raw materials
The experience gained here later flowed into the planning of the Spandau site.
It makes what you write about environmental questions sound better and more credible when your own company actively takes on responsibility for its environmental duties
A quick glance at the in-house magazine shows that climate awareness was not only applied in the printing sector 30 years ago
Florian Nehm was appointed as the company’s first environmental officer and introduced in the company magazine in a new section titled “Publishing and the Environment”
Here employees were encouraged to think actively about such matters and submit their suggestions for environmental protection in the workplace
office materials were no longer merely ordered from the warehouse
notebooks and the like could be ordered in a catalog that highlighted particularly climate-friendly products with a smiley
A survey also showed that the secretarial employees really took that on board
and it affected their ordering habits.
newspapers converted to using paper made of chlorine-free pulp
internal memos and photocopying began using exclusively recycled paper
Printing ink with fewer heavy metals was used
while developing and fixing solutions used in photo production
were disposed of in a climate-sensitive manner
A report was written about a survey asking the question
“What expectations do people have regarding the environmental sustainability of print media?” The high point came when company representatives carried out a dialog with the environmental organization Greenpeace when it protested outside the Hamburg publishing building about deforestation
https://www.axelspringer.com/en/inside/greenpeace-captures-axel-springer-building
“It makes what you write about environmental questions sound better and more credible when your own company actively takes on responsibility for its environmental duties,” former Chairman of the Board Jürgen Richter explained when presenting the 1995 Environmental Report—also a new feature
Axel Springer issued a Sustainability Report compiled in line with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)
making it the first media company worldwide to do so.
Every newly built printing plant was a small pioneer project in terms of environmental protection
The printing plants are only considered at the margins of our corporate strategy today
their technology was one of the five columns of the publishing house alongside management
lovingly nicknamed the “disciples of the black art”
who had completed his training in his father’s company with two journeyman’s certificates: as a typesetter and as a printer
When the new printing plant in Spandau was inaugurated
only 4,000 Axel Springer employees still worked in this sector
spread over the following five large printing works: rotogravure printing in Darmstadt (since 1960) and in Ahrensburg (since 1967)
and offset printing plants in Essen-Kettwig (1973)
Ahrensburg (1984) and of course in Berlin-Spandau (1993).
Printing plants form the bridge between the editorial offices and the readers
but in times of digitalization and waning interest in print products
fewer and fewer printing plants are needed
Axel Springer will close the Ahrensburg site
something that Florian Nehm alluded when he took office in 1992: “Every newly built printing plant was a small pioneer project in terms of environmental protection.”
From 2001 to 2018 Lars-Broder Keil was an editor in the domestic politics section of the WELT Group with a focus on contemporary history
Since June 2018 he has been employed in the company archive
The corporate archive of Axel Springer is growing
and a number of researchers have gifted us their research material
And we also have some great new books – most of which were written by our own employees
an arson attack destroyed the chalet of the WELT publisher
a Swiss author claimed responsibility for the fire—not for the first time
his description of the incident does not fit in with the findings of investigators in Zurich
The “Golden Steering Wheel” celebrations in Berlin’s Axel Springer on November 9
were interrupted by a very surprising event: The fall of the Berlin Wall
A memorial to 18-year-old Peter Fechter was already erected at the Berlin Wall on the day he died
It is also part of the story of Axel Springer
Axel Springer laid the foundation stone for the company’s Berlin headquarters
At a historical location with a journalistic mission
German TV legend Wolfgang Menge began his career at Axel Springer
reporting as a correspondent from places like Tokyo and Hong Kong
We honor him on what would have been his 100th birthday

BeA Group offers a wide range of fasteners for industry
The BeA brand stands for industrial applications of staple and nail technology in industrial timber construction
The autotec brand comprises customer-specific solutions with a high degree of automation in the production process
KMR offers screwdrivers and compressed air or gas devices
that are tailored to the requirements of the trade
The company employs around 450 people at 17 locations worldwide
Around 180 employees work at the headquarters in Ahrensburg
administration or customer service: Digitalization is a big priority in the company and is intended to help improve production processes
speed up processes or strengthen customer loyalty
increasing digitalization also increases the scope of attack for cybercriminals
This was the experience BeA Group had to make in 2023 November when the company was the victim of a cyberattack
In order to protect themselves against cyberattacks in the future and increase the cyber resilience of the company as a whole
the parties responsible decided to modernise and completely restructure the IT infrastructure
The project started at the end of 2023 and is expected to be completed next year
During the course of the complete renewal of the infrastructure
the focus also shifted to the previous storage solution
This solution was almost ten years old and repeatedly reached its limits in terms of performance and capacity
“That’s why we had long-term plans to install new storage and use modern storage technologies such as All-Flash,” says Tobias Biermann
Since autumn 2023, the BeA Group needed to reliably support the value chain with new IT infrastructure extremely quickly. “Our long-standing IT service provider provided us with a Huawei OceanStor Dorado 2000 as live storage with a capacity of 18 terabytes at short notice,” recalls Tobias Biermann
The solution was fully utilised by the data from the BeA Group’s file server
Huawei responded right away and provided the fastening specialist with the Huawei OceanStor Dorado 6000 almost overnight
Tobias Biermann and his IT team had very good experiences with the high-end device designed for mass storage
it quickly became clear that Huawei’s storage hardware will continue to be used by the BeA Group in the future
Huawei immediately helped the BeA Group build the new infrastructure at the end of 2023 with powerful storage solutions
performance and capacity bottlenecks - the BeA still recorded in the old storage landscape - have been a thing of the past
“Our Huawei OceanStor Dorado 5000 provided an enormous performance boost - both in the storage and network environment and in the application landscape,” says Stefan Krause
Not only has the performance of the ERP system improved significantly
but data backup is also faster: The backup processes installed on multiple servers previously ran overnight and took up to eight hours
the backup jobs are now done in less than three hours
In addition to the broad range of functions
it was important for the IT team that the storage solution not only fits the new infrastructure
but also the strategic direction of the company
As the BeA Group will be subject to the EU NIS2 directive
the IT team is already placing great importance on a secure
we are not part of the critical infrastructure
which is why we have to meet the cyber protection requirements associated with NIS2
It is therefore advantageous that the Huawei solution also increases cyber resilience in the company."
Speaking of the directive: With the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and other regulatory requirements at European and national level
BeA must also fulfil demands in terms of sustainability
the new storage solution helps us to be more energy-efficient,” reports Stefan Krause
as it consumes less energy than the old storage hardware and scores points with an environmentally friendly design
The company processes several million staples
No other manufacturer supplies more self-loading nailers and staplers for automated industrial production
There is also a wide range of compressed air-operated fastening systems for furniture production
The company employs 450 people and is represented in more than 40 countries with 14 subsidiaries
three branches and additional sales partners

Tobias Biermann (left in the picture) and Stefan Krause
“Thanks to the Huawei OceanStor Dorado 5000
our performance increased significantly - both in the storage and network environment and in the application landscape.”
“Huawei’s storage solution helps us meet security policies and strengthen cyber resilience across the business.”

An entirely plant-based liver loaf is also available
The best part is that manufacturers only need one system to make all of them

Hamburg, September 2023 – Roast chicken, pork knuckles, and the familiar wurst classics are getting some back-up. For Oktoberfest, Planteneers is offering favorites like Bavarian veal sausage
Team Leader of Product Management at Planteneers
Meinlschmidt adds that the demand for plant-based alternatives to brats like Thuringer and Nuremberg is currently high due to the summer grilling season
Planteneers has finished formulations ready to go
likewise for the liver loaf and veal sausage
“We can supply the systems either as all-in compounds including seasonings

2020 – Clariant announces availability of color masterbatches for use in producing new FAKRA high-speed data connectors for next-generation automobiles
were developed by Clariant in cooperation with major global polymer producers
the color concentrates help ensure performance and color stability in high-temperature engineering plastics – including Nylon 66
polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyphenylene amides (PPA) – used to make the FAKRA connectors
This new application – FAKRA connectors are slated to begin appearing in 2021 model cars – poses a number of challenges
so faithful reproduction of the standard hues is essential
they must tolerate not only the thermal stresses of injection molding and lead-free hot-air reflow soldering during assembly
but also the long-term mechanical and weathering stresses of under-hood
Global Segment Head and Business Development for Consumer Electronics
Electricals and Electronics at Clariant Masterbatches
satisfying this combination of requirements can be difficult
“Clariant Masterbatches is one of the few companies that have the experience
knowledge and global capabilities to deliver a complete masterbatch solution,” he says
these new masterbatches produce materials that not only meet FAKRA standards for color
but also meet UL94 flammability resistance requirements without the use of halogens or SVHCs (Substances of Very High Concern)
With FAKRA connector production ramping up
Dufour adds that the new masterbatches arrive at an important time: “The market for FAKRA-compliant colored resins is in flux
color-stable supplies but in relatively low quantities
Molders are typically not yet able to commit to the large volumes that resin makers supply
especially in the initial stages of production or for the smaller colors’ production
Clariant’s masterbatches enable the creation of color-stable ‘natural plus masterbatch’ resin mixes of any volume
with any of a range of high-temperature engineering polymers
and in any of the 14 FAKRA standard colors.”
Named for the German auto-industry group that developed the standard
FAKRA connectors provide 6 GHz of bandwidth to handle 5G cellular/data traffic and enable the next generation of automotive monitoring
FAKRA details 14 dimensionally standard plug/jack combinations
and a coded mating configuration that prevents mis-connections
Connectors are made with high-temperature-resins (HTRs) because their coaxial circuits are often bonded to printed circuit boards (PCBs) using lead-free reflow soldering at peak temperatures of 260°C (500°F)
Clariant offers change-controlled manufacturing and technical support for FAKRA-compliant color masterbatches from facilities in Shanghai

Developers and end users can test and debug their GigE Vision client applications and receivers, utilizing the GigESim GigE Vision simulator from A&B Software (New London, CT, USA; www.ab-soft.com) which turns a computer into a set of virtual GigE Vision cameras
users can select between GEV 1.2 and GEV 2.1 versions of the standard
inject artificial error conditions to the network
assign a pre-recorded image or video file as video source and control virtual camera features from their client application
"GigESim is bundled with a powerful GigE Vision Server SDK which allows developers and design engineers to turn their application or embedded computer into a customizable GigE Vision device with an assignable set of GenICam features," said Nalibotski
"This can be used to convert non-GEV camera interfaces such as CameraLink or USB
into GigE Vision cameras without utilizing any additional hardware."
"The SDK can also be used to transfer data in the GigE Vision format between multiple computers on the network for temporal and spatial multiprocessing
The latest version of GigESim supports 10 GigE and multi-NIC connections which makes it an ideal choice for developing distributed image processing systems based on the GigE Vision standard."
Of course, by the time this article is printed, there will almost surely have been more GigE Vision cameras released into the market, with many more to come. Keep an eye on all of the latest GigE Vision releases and more here: http://bit.ly/VSD-PROD.
