Former Illini great and current Illini color commentator Doug Altenberger recently joined the IlliniGuys Sports Spectacular show for a conversation:
Larry Smith: We have a lot we want to talk about. I want to go back a few years to start off here. What do you remember about your recruitment back when you were in high school? Was there ever a possibility of you going elsewhere?
Brad Sturdy: So what was the deciding factor? So yet, you've got quite a few coaching legends who you got to talk to about your recruitment. What made you decide that University of Illinois and coach Henson was where you wanted to play?
Mike Cagley: So there was no question that Illinois was going to be your home. So that's good to know. You were the first person that I ever saw that can shoot from the outside. And I figure that if the three point line had been around, maybe your freshman year, you probably would be the all time leader in three points, no doubt, right?
BS: A lot of fans today have some animosity towards Kentucky. But you have to have more animosity towards than anybody, right? I mean, going back to that, what was that like? That game in the Elite Eight?
BS: When you take a look at this year's Illini, what do you think? How would you describe the team? And how would you approach playing them based on your experiences?
MC: Does this team have the potential to make that run to the Final Four?
LS: Hopefully you will come back and join us later on in the season and get more of your insights on this team.
DA: Yeah, no problem. Thanks for having me and I enjoyed it and good luck and keep it going. Go Illini!

CHICAGO — Peoria native Doug Altenberger can’t wait for Ayo Dosunmu’s first basket as a member of the Chicago Bulls
If it’s anything like the former Richwoods player's first Bulls bucket in 1987 — which sent the old Chicago Stadium into a frenzy — then Dosunmu’s first points might register on the Richter scale
“I remember I hit my first 3-pointer in Chicago Stadium and the stands were going crazy,” Altenberger recalled
they wouldn’t have cheered me like that.’ ..
Every time Ayo touches that ball next year … people are going to go to the game and want to support him.”
The Bulls selected Dosunmu in the second round of the NBA draft on Thursday night
The Chicago native is the first Illini to be drafted by the Bulls since Altenberger went in the sixth round as the 125th pick overall in 1987
“The key with Ayo was to go somewhere he could get comfortable
learn the NBA game and get bigger and stronger,” Altenberger said from Wyoming
“A team that is a little more patient with him
That’s the Chicago Bulls description. I think he’s going to be really successful there."
Ayo comes home: What Twitter is saying about newest Chicago Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu of Illinois
Altenberger believes that Dosunmu’s game — which is a contrast from the Peorian's sharpshooting style — will translate well to the NBA
“And those are areas where he will improve,” Altenberger said
“He’s improved dramatically since his freshman year
He sort of figures out how he can help a team and how to win
that’s sort of what he’s wired for.”
Even though his playing days are long over
Altenberger still regularly gets asked about playing for the Bulls
he guarded Michael Jordan in practice for a couple of months and was a late cut on the opening day of the season
Altenberger even made a cameo in The Last Dance
the documentary on Jordan and the Bulls’ dynasty
‘You got drafted by the Bulls!’ To this day
a week doesn’t go by when it doesn’t come up in some conversation,” Altenberger said
‘I played for the Chicago Bulls.’ "
'A dream come true': Inside Ayo Dosunmu’s NBA draft party in Chicago
Dosunmu fell lower than expected in the draft
and Altenberger expects the guard to play with a chip on his shoulder — similar to what happened to him
Altenberger was projected to go in the second round after his redshirt-senior year
but instead slipped to the Bulls in the sixth round
they usually had summer (rookie) camps you would go to,” Altenberger said
“And I had slipped down the draft because for some reason they were worried about my knee
‘Why isn’t anybody picking him?’ And they said
we heard he has a bad knee,’ which was not the case
So I got drafted by the Bulls and I was like
Former Bulls GM Jerry Krause labeled Altenberger a “steal” as a late-round pick
but the cancellation of rookie camps and a tight roster situation for the Bulls ultimately led to Altenberger getting cut on the first day of the season
“What happened was we had a center on the team
and he was guaranteed,” Altenberger said
Then the next thing was we needed a point guard to back up John Paxton
Peoria pipeline: How the city keeps its basketball talent flowing to Illinois basketball
It was too late in the year to sign in Europe
and Altenberger wasn’t too keen on playing in the Continental Basketball Association
He ended up going into business shortly after calling it a career
and has done quite well in real estate since then
“It was a dream to play in the NBA,” Altenberger said
“I didn’t make the final roster
but I played several games in Chicago Stadium and the fans were so supportive
and I wouldn’t be surprised if Ayo will be in the mix

(WMTV) - A Janesville man was sentenced to 20 years in the prison system on Friday for a 2023 crash that killed a mother who was on her way to work
according to the Rock County District Attorney’s Office
51-year-old Mark McCoy will spend the first 10 years in custody and the remaining 10 years on extended supervision
In January, he was convicted and found guilty of second-degree reckless homicide and negligent homicide by operation of a vehicle following a four-day jury trial
McCoy was sentenced for second-degree reckless homicide
Prosecutor Verity Altenberger told the jury during opening statements that McCoy was up late at a friend’s home
overtired and had drank alcohol the day of the crash
Altenberger argued in court on Friday that the victim was a caregiver
grandmother and friend who cared for veterans at the VA hospital
“He did not (get) behind the wheel intending to kill her,” said Altenberger
“But he made every choice that killed her.”
The judge expressed sympathy for McCoy’s background and that he didn’t intend to hurt anyone but said McCoy was responsible for every choice that killed Hohmann
The DA’s Office said a blood draw taken hours after the crash showed he had alcohol in this system
though he was found not guilty of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle during the trial
He was also found not guilty of second-degree recklessly endangering safety
Prosecutor Rick Sullivan said during closing arguments that McCoy’s choice to drive that night was like “playing a game of Russian roulette.” He said “every person on the road was in danger because of his actions.”

CHAMPAIGN — The developer of a new seven-story hotel planned for downtown Champaign said he now hopes to begin construction in September
Plans for the new Marriott Aloft hotel at 401 N
with a restaurant and open air bar on the ground floor
He was in Champaign on Tuesday to meet with city officials and others to provide an update on the project
The hotel was previously planned to open at the end of 2020
but the start of construction hit delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a shortage of materials
He now projects construction will likely take 18 months
though he’d like to see the hotel open by Christmas next year
the cost of the construction will now run about 20-25 percent more than originally planned
The hotel and restaurant industries were the first to be hit by what he calls the “COVID recession,” Altenberger said
and they will probably be the last to emerge from it
the city’s assistant planning and development director
said there was a building permit under review for the hotel before COVID-19 hit that will need to be updated
but city officials aren’t expecting a lot of changes in this project now that it’s being restarted
The Marriott Aloft will be just a block north of the Hyatt Place hotel
and Kowalski said the city remains very interested in the addition of a second hotel downtown as demand for rooms picks up
Altenburger is developing the hotel with Dave Mastio and Tony Block
and the property at the corner of Neil and Hill streets was purchased for $275,000
A ceremonial ground-breaking was held in October 2019
Aloft Hotels come with an urban design and cater to “today’s modern traveler who craves jet-setting style and a vibrant social scene at an affordable price,” according to Marriott
Visit Champaign County President and CEO Jayne DeLuce said this hotel will be a great complement to increased activity and promotion of downtown Champaign as a destination
Aloft hotels aren’t known for a lot of extra amenities
but more for “here’s a place to be and get out and explore your community.”
The local hotel industry has been rebounding this summer with the help of leisure sports and business travel
Demand for rooms is up nearly 40 percent over the past year of the pandemic
That’s even without the University of Illinois in full operation
and she looks for demand to pick up even more in the fall
“I think people are just so anxious to travel,” she said

Richardson heads into Senior Day when the Illini host Nebraska in Big Ten play
Since Manual High School’s Jerry Hester arrived in 1993
the Illini have had at least one scholarship player on the roster from Peoria
who attended Peoria Central for his first three years of high school before transferring to Findlay Prep in Henderson
“It’s disappointing,’’ Hester said of the impending end of an Illini era
you want to see great players come out of there
they’ll probably have some young guys there in Peoria
The Peoria area has a long tradition with Illini hoops
His 53-point game at Indiana in 1963 still stands as the single-game school record
Mark Smith and Doug Altenberger gave the Illini a boost early in coach Lou Henson’s tenure
Hester led the Illini to a Big Ten title in 1998
Marcus Griffin and Frank Williams carried the Illini within one victory of the Final Four
Peoria Central’s Jerrance Howard was a player and a valuable recruiter
With no incoming recruit or even a high Division I player on the radar from Peoria
the Illini had four players from Peoria on the active roster
“It’s pretty amazing,’’ Illinois coach John Groce said
We’re going to continue to connect with Peoria.’’
Richardson has scored in double figures in the last 10 games and leads the Illini in scoring in Big Ten play at 14.6 points per game
He’s averaging more rebounds and steals than at any other time in his career
and Richardson also has become a strong leader
But even he knows Peoria basketball isn’t the same

He led Peoria Central to back-to-back Class AA state titles
The run of high-major talent reached its peak from the mid-1980s to 2004
said former Peoria Central coach Chuck Buescher
“The area isn’t what it once was,’’ Buescher said
“There aren’t the type of Division I players turned out like during that span
“I don’t think what went on for 20 years was realistic
and there wasn’t much difference between Flint and Peoria.’’
Peoria Central won the Class 3A state title a year ago
Yet there’s been a lack of high Division I talent
The City/Suburban Hoops Report’s Top 80 prospects list in the class of 2013 in Illinois has just two players from Peoria
but Riley was ruled ineligible for the year by the IHSA after transferring from Manual to a prep school and back to Notre Dame last fall
there isn’t a single Peoria kid among the Hoops Report’s Top 80 prospects

the largest trailer manufacturer in Europe
has engineered a new line-up of aluminium fixed roof curtainsider trailers at its trailer manufacturing facility in Altenberge
The new range has been developed exclusively for the UK and Irish markets and is built alongside the sliding roof curtainsiders favoured by operators on the Continent
the Altenberge plant – one of nine Schmitz Cargobull production facilities – has the capacity to build up to 200 trailers per day
enabling the company to react swiftly to even the largest fleet orders
Key features include a new aluminium front bulkhead with galvanised steel front and rear corner posts – a specification favoured by many domestic operators as it allows free side loading (the ability to use standard forklifts to load through the side aperture
without requiring a side-shift capability)
It also includes wraparound curtains and a front ratchet tensioner
Schmitz Cargobull expects the majority of domestic fleets to specify two side posts per side without rigging boards
but also offers the option of three side posts per side with rigging boards
says: “We have engineered this new fixed roof curtainsider specifically for the UK and Irish markets. It allows us to compete head-to-head against domestic trailer manufacturers and be competitive on price.”
The company is exhibiting an example of its new aluminium fixed roof curtainside trailer at the TCS&D Show 2013 (18/19 September
where it has more than 126m2 of exhibition space
The launch trailer is 13.6m long and has been fitted with Schmitz Cargobull’s own Rotos axles
which are assembled in Altenberge and feature on 70 per cent of all new Schmitz Cargobull trailers
the trailer has full height aluminium mono hinged double doors and two roof-mounted load restraint tracks
it has been constructed using the company’s patented bolted and galvanised manufacturing technique
which is generally regarded as a more precise and high quality construction process for the 21st century
This also removes much of the need for costly welding and paint repairs in the event of damage at any point in the trailer’s life
This and other examples of the company’s products will be available for fleets to trial as demonstrators following the exhibition

Popularity of Schmitz Cargobull axles continue – part of the tried and tested ROTOS® running gear.
Eight years on from the launch of Schmitz Cargobull’s own trailer axles in 2005
the company has reported that more than 400,000 axles have been manufactured and incorporated in its in-house trailer production
Trailer running gear has a particularly significant impact on both maintenance costs and fleet uptime for a vehicle operator
so its ongoing development has been stepped up by Schmitz Cargobull. Additionally
the company has worked to optimise its axles to ensure perfect tracking and high suspension comfort combined with the safety features offered by innovative driving stability and braking programmes
Schmitz Cargobull’s Head of Production
emphasises the high quality standards: "Every wheel bearing
pneumatic suspension and shock absorber we use is sourced from world-class manufacturers
As the uptime of trailers is strongly dependent on the running gear
our manufacturing process undergoes constant
The ROTOS® running gear is manufactured by Schmitz Cargobull at its extensive production facility in Altenberge
where curtainsider and platform semi-trailers are also built
axles are also supplied to production plants in Vreden
approximately 80 per cent of all trailers manufactured in Altenberge are equipped with Schmitz Cargobull's own axle
and around 70 per cent of the company’s total trailer production
In recent years the axle production volume has levelled off at approximately 90,000 units annually
Primary features of the ROTOS running gear with the Schmitz Cargobull axle include the maintenance-free bearing
an innovative ventilation system for the disc brakes
the multi-ride-height pneumatic suspension for every ramp height along with the standard trailer EBS with RSP (Roll Stability Program)
the EBS unit enables comprehensive operating data recording and transfer for the trailer telematics system
tyre pressure and brake pad wear monitoring and load monitoring
As a variant to the tried and tested ROTOS running gear
the newly developed Schmitz Cargobull self-steering axle was presented at the IAA Show in September 2012
Its cornering characteristics – particularly when driving in tight turning circles
where damage to the tyres can often come about due to contact with the inside kerbs on roundabouts – is significantly improved thanks to the self-steering axle
A further advantage of the system is the reduction in tyre wear
as abrasion is significantly reduced when using a guided axle
this also leads to a reduction in fuel consumption

a new spa and adult-exclusive wellness facility designed by award-winning Hadi Teherani Architects
has officially opened at the five-star Hotel Krallerhof in Leogang
expanding the luxurious Alpine resort’s suite of recreational services and facilities
Blending harmoniously into the surrounding alpine landscape and creating a year-round space for relaxation and regeneration
‘ATMOSPHERE’ builds on the long tradition of luxury accommodation synonymous with Hotel Krallerhof
first opened by the Altenberger family in 1956
Making use of innovative Kebony wood decking
the spectacular hotel delivers a contemporary wellness experience enhanced by themes of sustainability and healthy architecture
German studio Hadi Teherani were commissioned to develop an extension to Hotel Krallerhof’s interior and exterior leisure facilities in 2019
with all works on the project successfully delivered last summer
“I wanted to create a building that is subordinate to this wonderful landscape
but is still present,” comments lead architect
“ATMOSPHERE engenders a quiet experience of great intensity
especially in the 50-metre-long infinity pool
embedded in a large natural swimming lake and the vastness of this unique landscape.”
minimising the visual impact for guests looking out from the hotel while
remaining characteristic of the local alpine terrain
The centrepiece of the new facility is a 5,500m2 natural swimming and bathing lake which incorporates a 50m Olympic sized heated infinity pool at its heart
surrounded by an open-floor sun lounging space decked entirely in Kebony wood
The wooden decking extends into a circular trail
moving outwards from the spa building and enveloping the entire lake
offering multiple viewing platforms that each provide unique
calming perspectives of the neighbouring Steinernes Meer plateau and Leoganger Steinberge mountain range
The use of Kebony embodies the eco-conscious ethos of the ‘ATMOSPHERE’ project
evident in the creation of a new plant belt in the lake which uses the excavated material from construction for the new zen garden
supporting biodiversity and local flora and fauna
the heating of the infinity pool has been delivered by means of a biomass power
utilising local wood chips from a timber construction enterprise only 200m from the hotel
the wooden path enters into the main resort via a descending glass façade
seamlessly linking the tranquility of the outdoors to the world-class suite of treatments available at Hotel Krallerhof
The new facility includes a sub-zero ‘Ice Grotto’ therapy room
a Finnish-style and herbal all-wooden ‘Amphi-Sauna’ and a café
each providing guests with a holistic selection of relaxation experiences
alongside the Hotel’s programme of wellness activities
Locally produced wood and glass adorn the exposed concrete walls of the building interior with vertical boarding
while special furniture carved from provincial alpine marble completes the calming
eco-friendly vision of this iconic new project
comments: “ATMOSPHERE by Krallerhof Spa and Hadi Teherani Architects is one of the largest applications of Kebony decking in the world

the world leader in trailer sales and technologies
has invested more than €30 million in its main plant in Altenberge
in the last business year alone to establish a completely new I-beam production line
“The beam is cold formed from a blank without a welding seam”
Series production has already started in Altenberge in July and
The product developed using the new technology had its global premiere at IAA
where the company also displayed a series of innovative products and solutions
much to the excitement of its customers who thronged its pavilion
The new production technology for the I-beam in the chassis module largely replaces the normal welding process and creates significant advantages
both for the customer and within the production process
Material stress which comes about as a result of the heat generated by welding can be prevented
“The single-piece l-beams increase both quality and precision,” points out the Board member for Research
Using bolted technology which has proven itself over the course of many years
adjustments can be made to suit customer requirements relatively late in the production process
As part of the introduction of the new process the development team has also further reduced the complete range of variants
“Approximately 20 l-beams manufactured using the rolling process replace approximately 280 welded variants used previously,” explains Mr
Both the old and the new production lines will initially run parallel to each other
but by the end of 2014 the plan is to manufacture up to 75 per cent of the l-beams using the new cold forming process
Schmitz Cargobull has invested around €10 million in the independent development of the new technology
Once this technological advantage had been achieved it was clear that these modern production processes would also be put to use at the new Wuhan plant in China
“The equipment required is unprecedented on this scale
It was developed and manufactured to identical designs,” says Board Member
who has lived in China since August 2013 and is co-ordinating setting up the production facilities along with the supplier and sales network in country
Since the foundation for the new plant was laid in the Chinese city of Wuhan in the autumn of 2013
preparatory work has been running at top speed
The factory building has been in place since the end of June 2014
and the series production has just started
suppliers and production workers are being trained
The aim is to deliver the first 500 trailers to customers from the Chinese production facility in this year – only two years after signing of the joint venture agreement with the Dongfeng Motor Group in November 2012
The detailed preparatory work has paid off
“We want to take advantage of the lead that we have gained over other competitors in Europe and America so that we may quickly take on a leading role in the rapidly-developing Chinese trailer market,” reports Schmitz
The market leader continued its strong growth during the business year 2013/2014
The number of trailers and rigid bodies delivered rose to 45,300 units while its turnover also rose by 7.5% to €1.625 billion
After the increase in sales during the previous year
“In the current business year we are aiming for a turnover of around €1.8 billion and a production volume of around 48,900 units
Our clear goal is to use the recovery of the markets in Southern and Western Europe to strengthen and further expand our leadership in terms of the market and technology,” adds Schümer
Schmitz Cargobull presented the new curtain-sider semi-trailer generation: the S.CS GENIOS
The model is distinguished by a redesigned body with a variety of new features along with the advanced chassis generation manufactured using the revolutionary cold rolling process
The high-tech production facilities were installed in a new production hall for this new generation
The approximately 12,000 m² production facility have commenced manufacturing the new components in July 2014
The facility takes into account both ecological and economic concerns
With this new technology Schmitz Cargobull has once again created a milestone which highlights the company’s competence as the market leader in the trailer industry
The production method for the new GENIOS generation utilises a ‘rolled’ frame profile rather than the former welded l-beam
state-of-the-art production facilities at the expanded plant in Altenberge are capable of manufacturing the l-beams using a cold forming process
The advantages at a glance: The chassis’ structural stability has been significantly improved and the durability increased while retaining the same weight as the material’s structure remains unchanged by welding processes
this enables perfect dimensional precision and also provides a high level of production precision for the subsequent industrial manufacturing process
serves to significantly increase the trailer’s overall quality
the enhanced bolting technology makes the vehicles even easier to repair and maintain
Thanks to the permanent and sustainable surface protection provided by the galvanisation process
Schmitz Cargobull grants a 10-year warranty against rust-through
The new production process increases the plant’s energy and transport efficiency while also making an important contribution to reducing its carbon footprint
The new design enables the l-beams to be loaded onto trucks in a modular manner
This greatly reduces the number of journeys required for the surface treatment
“The l-beams are key components of the new “S.CS GENIOS” generation and are manufactured in Altenberge and delivered to the plants in Spain
These plants assemble the individual modules to produce a complete trailer”
