Confidential agreements and medicines out of reach for millions
This investigation goes inside Europe’s secret drug pricing system
revealing a world of opaque deals and unequal access
NDR and WDR imply that the Indianapolis-headquartered firm helped engineer the confidentiality clause in the Medical Research Act
"Eli Lilly is linking its investment decision [in Alzey] to the federal government's promise to enable confidential discounts on innovative medicines," read the notes of a senior official in the Federal Health Ministry from a meeting in September 2023.The consequences will ripple across Europe and beyond
When a new drug is launched on the market in Germany
pharmaceutical companies are initially free to choose the price
hospitals and a body known as the Federal Joint Committee assess the value of the medication
If they decide that the new drug has no proven additional benefit compared to previously available therapies
This discount price has so far been publicly available – and has an impact beyond Germany
acting as a guide for other European countries who also want discounts
many will be threatened with rising prices.Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and officials at an event marking Eli Lilly's investment in Alzey in April 2024.The documents obtained by Investigate Europe and its partners confirm that Eli Lilly's demands and the government's concessions did indeed exist
A freedom of information request for documents relating to the law was submitted in December 2023
but the files only arrived in September after Investigate Europe filed a lawsuit for inaction
The contents of the files are therefore only now becoming known
after the law was passed in the German parliament
can be informed that the Federal Health Ministry is complying with Eli Lilly's request and is planning to enable confidential discounts for the manufacturer's price within the framework of the Medical Research Act."According to the document
the company had already "informed the Federal Health Ministry in a conversation with a department head weeks earlier that the investment would involve an amount in the low single-digit billions"
Notes taken by the department head suggest Eli Lilly’s stance was unmistakably clear: "Eli Lilly is linking its investment decision to the federal government's promise to enable confidential discounts on innovative medicines." In November 2023
the minister was presented with a document marked "EILT SEHR!" (“Very urgent!"): "The company Lilly
which had linked its investment decision in Alzey to the prospect of a confidential reimbursement amount
is particularly in favour of such a regulation."“Eli Lilly is linking its investment decision to the federal government's promise to enable confidential discounts on innovative medicines."”— Notes of a Federal Health Ministry official

but also the many other worldwide hits of the great band around Mark Knopfler
concert fans regret that this band has not been seen live for a long time
An absence from the stage for around 25 years gave reason to give the musical brothers in arms a kind of renaissance
So it was only natural that a handful of selected musicians were found for the “Brothers in Arms” formation
who not only know how to reproduce the hits
but also the spirit and atmosphere of Dire Straits live
And this with a fan base that is growing from year to year and far beyond the borders of Germany
The over 2-hour program not only takes the audience through the musical history of Dire Straits
the band's high musical standards have won over concertgoers in around 900 live shows to date and speak for a professional performance
“Brothers in Arms” are in no way inferior to the original and promise an impressive live musical experience

The Hungarian Iron Maiden tribute band ‘Iron Maidnem’ has existed since 1996
the aim of the band members was simply to play their favourite Iron Maiden songs in the rehearsal room
the first gigs soon followed and the band began to take themselves and their music more seriously
They acquired the necessary professionalism and now play at all the major metal festivals in Hungary
the band could only convince with their outstanding sound
but today they also inspire the audience with the appropriate show paraphernalia
The line-up of stage decorations ranges from backdrops to a 2.5 metre tall and movable Eddie figure
which gives the audience the feeling that they are watching a real Iron Maiden show
Look forward to classics such as ‘Wasted Years’
but also to songs that Iron Maiden have never played live such as ‘Back in The Village’

On Thursday morning, 16 German high school students met with their American counterparts for the last time at Dennis-Yarmouth High School
to say farewell and to celebrate the success of their exchange program
On Oct. 11, students from the Elisabeth Langgässer Gymnasium in Alzey, Germany, a town southeast of Frankfurt
visited Cape Cod as part of the exchange program with the German Club of D-Y High School
18 American students visited the town of Alzey for 10 days
“It is one thing to learn the German language in class
know the basics of the grammar and everything
but it was completely another experience to actually go to Germany and experience everything in person,” said Molly Gedutis
The German student group visited Plimoth Patuxet Museums, went on a day trip to Cape Cod National Seashore and visited Provincetown during their stay
the students conducted a workshop with sixth- and seventh-grade students who are learning German at the D-Y Middle School
The German exchange program is the only exchange program offered at D-Y at present
American students who went to Germany stayed with host families in Alzey and when the German students came to Cape Cod
a retired German teacher at Dennis-Yarmouth High School
which has been around for the last 15 years
the biggest challenge is finding host families in both Germany and Cape Cod
Colton-Mund used to live in Alzey and taught at the Elisabeth Langgässer Gymnasium
this is the first exchange program on the Cape that is operating overseas again," said Colton-Mund
“To see the program continuing to go on makes me really happy,” said Colton-Mund
I’m confident this will continue and I’m happy that it has a new overseer now.”
the program has been an invaluable experience
but here everybody has one school where everyone from different social backgrounds comes together,” said Philipp Petersohn
“The schools here have an integrated system which is great
even students who have learning disorders work together with others and thrive.”
schools have so many different clubs and other sports activities
Back home we usually have different activities outside of school,” said Lena Lutze
“The students here do all these in the school
The exchange program focuses heavily on student interaction and not just on learning a different language or culture
not just traveling around,” said Philippe Hillenbrand
the German teacher from Alzey who chaperoned the students
“The United States has great places where you can go
but actually meeting people from different nations
getting in touch with them and living their lives with them is what makes this program a rich experience.”
compared to Americans who always seem on the move
German students were taken aback by Americans who got their coffees to go and eat while driving in the car
“Germans like to sit at their cafes while getting a coffee
chat and do other stuff instead of getting it to go,” said Finn
The bigness of the United States was startling to some
efficient parking space and you can really see the different types of development the cities have compared to Europe,” said Joel Ullrich
D-Y student Finn liked what he saw in Europe
"The architecture in Germany was awesome and it was great to see all the old buildings
some of them were even older than our country," Finn said
Club supervisor Horn said the students forged strong ties
"I can see the bonding that happened between all of them," she said
German student Fenya Diehl shared her first-hand experience with American culinary practices
“A lot of people eat fast food here but back home we eat a lot of bread
we have a lot of bakeries and we always have a full set of meals during each time of the day,” said Diehl
“What I also found interesting is that Americans like to snack a lot and we don’t have that; we have three full meals a day.”
D-Y student Niamh Ryan said America is not just about big buildings
“We went into the grocery store and one of the German students was surprised to see such big portions of food
which they are not familiar with,” said Ryan
“They were even shocked by the pizza size here!”
D-Y senior Gedutis really connected with her exchange partner
"We got so close and we are practically sisters at this point," she said
I feel like even though we are separated by an ocean and live thousands of miles apart
Program supervisor Horn said she enjoyed the entire experience
“I’m from Germany and so it is very dear to my heart to be able to show my students the culture that I'm from

In the dynamic landscape of the pharmaceutical industry
With a commitment to securing supply chains and fostering partnerships
Lilly International embarks on a European expansion that promises a bright future
This expansion encompasses a new location in Alzey
As the pharmaceutical giant navigates uncharted waters
it seeks to forge strong alliances and leverage innovative practices
By bridging visionary science with practical implementation
Lilly aims to revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry landscape
In an interview for CHEManager International
Christene Smith sits down with Edgardo Hernandez
to delve into the intricacies of this bold endeavor
CHEManager: How do you plan to enhance manufacturing capabilities within Europe to strengthen supply chains and ensure timely delivery of medications
Edgardo Hernandez: Our purpose is to improve the lives of people worldwide
We research and develop innovative medicines in indications such as diabetes
Our most important goal is to provide a safe and reliable supply of our medicines to the people who rely on them
Germany’s role in this is growing and from 2027
our new facility will further expand Lilly’s global parenteral — injectable — product and device manufacturing network
helping meet increased demand for Lilly’s medicines
including our diabetes and obesity portfolio
The new plant at Alzey will produce medicines for the German market
Can you elaborate on the strategic significance of the new German location for Lilly in Europe
Hernandez: Every investment in manufacturing capacity around the world renews our commitment to patients today — and to those who may need our medicines tomorrow
Germany is strategically important for Lilly and the planned plant in Alzey brings us to a total of six major production sites in Europe
will create a cluster of manufacturing sites
strengthening links to academia and government
and diversifying our growing Lilly presence in the area
Did you compare different countries for this investment
What led to the decision to build up a new greenfield site in Germany
Hernandez: We look at multiple factors when considering where to locate new manufacturing sites; these are long-term decisions and major investments; and we’ve announced €10.2 billion — $11 billion — of investments in the last three years
and the ability to build the facility itself
We look at the political and fiscal context; we value stability
a workable planning framework and support and incentives for innovation
What specific improvements have been made to the facilities in Italy and France as part of the expansion efforts
What collaborative efforts are being fostered between Lilly and European research centers to drive innovation and advance medical breakthroughs
and we want our industry leading capabilities to drive additional impact for patients by supporting assets beyond our immediate pipeline and partnerships
how does Lilly differentiate itself in the European pharmaceutical market
Hernandez: We are committed to working with stakeholders and governments across Europe to build a more prosperous environment for R&D and find sustainable solutions for challenges within the healthcare systems
from procurement of raw materials through production
and materials which are procured globally across about 150 vendors
we can be flexible and adapt resources and supplies to ensure our medicine is available at the right time for each patient
Our global monitoring and risk mitigation systems allow us to determine the supply of medicines to meet our obligation to patients
How do you envision the long-term impact of these expansions on patient access to Lilly’s medications across Europe
Hernandez: This investment will increase our capacity to support increased demand for our existing medicines
including our diabetes and obesity treatments
and well as playing a critical role in bringing Lilly’s future pipeline to patients around the world
Expanding EU advanced manufacturing capabilities
while maintaining a diverse and secure global supply chain helps deliver flexibility in supply chains that protects against shortages
enabling us to access the resources we need and adjust avoid production disruptions and mitigate the impact of natural disasters or other public health emergencies
Are there any specific challenges or regulatory considerations unique to each country — Italy
and Germany — that you’ve encountered during this expansion process
We are committed to working with the German government to build a more prosperous environment for R&D and find sustainable solutions for challenges within the German healthcare system

Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey (LTAA) this December marks 10 years of experience with the maintenance
repair and overhaul of the CF 34-10E engine — a type used in the Embraer 190 and 195 regional jets and the Embraer Lineage 1000 business jet
a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik
added the CF34-1 and CF34-3 to its portfolio as early as 1991
and they were joined by the CF34-8 in 2002
LTAA's employees have supported over 550 CF34-10E shop visits and more than 270 on-site visits for customers
the 100th shop visit of a CF34-10E took place
Even if the engine manufacturer General Electric (GE) decided in early 2020 to discontinue new production of the 10E
explains: "More than 1500 CF34-10 engines are currently in operation around the world
and the 10E is currently experiencing a revival
We have up to 120 maintenance events per year
and we are assuming further growth in the coming years."
Prior to the introduction of the CF34 family's largest engine
which produces up to 20,000 pounds of thrust
preparations were needed for those engine modules that were likely the most maintenance-intensive parts for operators
Experience quickly revealed that the low-pressure turbine (LPT) in particular was showing signs of wear
Thus LTAA developed an LPT Module Modification Program
At the heart of the program is the on-site removal of the LPT followed by a workshop repair — cost-effectively and with very short turnaround times: up to four days for the removal and reinstallation of the LPT module
plus up to nine days for the required changes to the module in the workshop
The entire process thus lasted just 14 days — as opposed to the more than 35 days required for a regular workshop visit
it was possible to dispense with the test run that otherwise would have been necessary
LTAA itself largely developed the tool sets needed to replace the module and procured the fixtures for removing and transporting the engine as well as the transport containers for the LPT module
The program was not limited to the facility in Alzey; LPT modules were removed and reinstalled at sites such as Beijing or Tulsa
During the last expansion stage of the program
the LPT modules were even completely modified in Tulsa and no longer had to be transported to Alzey
"In addition to the benefits for customers
the LPT Module Modification Program also enabled us to eliminate the backlog created by the delayed introduction of the CF34-10 at LTAA
and maintain our standing with respect to the competition," recalls Thomas Breit
Entry Into Service Manager CF34-10 at LTAA
a "top and lower case procedure" for the compressor was developed with the engine's manufacturer
and introduced to deal with more sizable compressor damage
It considerably reduced the work needed for these repairs
The procedure was first carried out on-site for a customer in Australia
avoiding the transport of the engine all the way from Australia to Alzey
LTAA's long years of experience are valued by the engine's manufacturer as well as by customers: "Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey and Finnair have been collaborating on CF34 engine shop visits for several years successfully
we especially appreciate the clear and transparent shop visit process and that there is good communication and seamless co-operation," notes Marko Anttila
head of Continuing Airworthiness and Powerplant Management at Finnair
and innovative thinking from our MRO suppliers
which we think Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey has provided very well
This has been essential during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic as well."
LTAA collaborates on the optimization of manuals and pursues an ongoing exchange with GE
The company also supports the OEM in short-term projects

Eli Lilly is investing $2.5 billion to construct a manufacturing plant in Germany to support an increased demand for its diabetes and obesity drugs, the company announced on Friday
The plant will be built in the German town of Alzey
The new facility will create 1,000 jobs for highly skilled workers such as engineers
The company also estimates that 1,900 jobs will be created during construction
It will be the company’s first major German production facility and Germany’s workforce “will play a vital role in bolstering Lilly’s incretin supply when the new site is operational beginning in 2027,” according to the announcement
Lilly also said it will invest up to $100 million in the German early-stage life sciences ecosystem
The news comes as the biopharma industry is struggling to keep up with the massive—and growing—demand in the obesity treatment market
Novo Nordisk, another major player in the obesity space, last week announced that it was giving its manufacturing capabilities a $6 billion boost
which will fund the construction of a new multi-product facility in Denmark dedicated to the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients
particularly those used in its GLP-1 products
Novo and Lilly form a virtual duopoly in the multibillion-dollar obesity market
Some analysts project that the market could reach up to $200 billion in value
80% of which is likely to be captured by Lilly and Novo
Far behind Novo and Lilly is AstraZeneca, which last week set its sights on the lucrative obesity market with a potential $2 billion contract with Shanghai-based biotech Eccogene for ECC5004
The early-stage candidate is also a GLP-1 receptor agonist but is designed to be orally administered
type diabetes and other cardiometabolic conditions

Originally released in December 2024 and recorded into a 16-track tape machine
1 is as heavy as one would expect from The Wizard
“It’s raw as fuck,” boasts Jus. “It’s like a lost ’70s black metal demo rehearsal session or something
I always promised Electric Wizard was like rats in your face
As the COVID pandemic took hold in 2020, Electric Wizard wondered if they might ever play live again
Out in the wilds of the English Westcountry where singer/guitarist Jus Oborn and guitarist Liz Buckingham live
the band descended into their crypt-like jam space to make a live album like no other.
“We’d been gigging for two years at that point
and we were sounding pretty good by the end of it,” adds Jus. “When the pandemic happened we thought
maybe we’ll never play again.’ So we went into the jam room and played the songs to get them on tape to capture how we were playing at the time.”
and taking in signature apocalyptic doom staples like Witchcult Today, Satanic Rites of Drugula and the ever-destructive Funeralopolis
the set here shows how powerful and dominating The Wizard can be.
Jus says he wanted to capture a feeling like that of Motörhead’s classic No Sleep ‚til Hammersmith (1981)
(1975) that you were getting a window into something
an opportunity for a band as big and cult-like as Electric Wizard to bring something from metal’s dirty underbelly into the light
if only for the purposes of freaking out the unprepared
“We’ve always been trying to drag the underground into the overground,” offers Jus. “Rather than pretending to be playing some big stadium

Glastonbury Festival’s 2024 BBC Introducing headliner, 25 year old Lizzie Esau released her brand new single today. The darkly, euphoric, ‘Bugs’, is the artist’s most accomplished release yet, showcasing an aptitude for anthemic songwriting with lyrical depth. (LISTEN HERE)
The release follows a huge year for the artist
whose 2024 single ‘She’s a Scorpio’ received multiple plays by Greg James on his BBC Radio 1 show
Last year also saw Esau included in BBC Radio 1’s Future Artists Next Wave
added to Radio X’s Xposure Playlist
and selected by The Ivors Academy as part of their U25 Chair
Last summer, Esau’s heavy rock cover of Muddy Waters’ ‘I’m a Man’ was featured in the hit Amazon Prime series, My Lady Jane
Esau hinted there may be a debut album in the works
“I feel inspired and ready for a new era of music… I can’t wait for the next year of building up to my biggest
‘Bugs’ delves into the timeless link between creativity and self-destruction
The track emerged from a frustrating bout of writer’s block for Esau
who began to worry that a happier state of mind might stifle her creative output
she examines the tension between authentic songwriting and inner turmoil: “My downfall is my muse / If you asked me I would choose / To stay just as I am / I’m no fun unless I’ve drank.”
April marked a triumphant return for the artist to her home county of Tyne and Wear
with a sold-out headline show at The Glasshouse for BBC Introducing
Last year saw Esau embark on a UK tour with Oxford four-piece South Arcade and Anglo-Irish art pop outfit, Soft Launch, before announcing a number of her own headline shows for this Spring.
“She pulls in listeners with a charming rock-based first impression but can already offer an impressive range of tones.” – Clash
“… thoughtful and important commentary paired with an ever-expanding range of sonics.” – Dork
uptempo track will be followed by a stylish video directed by Charlie Sarsfield
The 27-year-old artist from Doncaster saw his last two albums hit Number 1 in the UK and break into the Billboard Hot 100
and he has amassed over 6 billion streams globally
is seen in the back of a Mini Cooperbefore arriving to live it up at a packed-out pub
The video is peppered with pop culture references
including a clear nod to the iconic 1982 Maxell “Break the Sound Barrier” advert
with Yungblud posing in an armchair
in-your-face anthem that celebrates the best of British pop and rock
Speaking about the new single, Yungblud said
‘Making this song was a f*cking party and you can hear that on the recording
“[I tried to] let my subconscious do a lot of the talking and then make sense of my words the following afternoon in a kitchen
“I’ve been on a journey trying to find meaning in different places all over the world
but it felt as though my feet left the ground a little too much and I had to bring myself back… to British music
‘Lovesick Lullaby’ follows the release of the nine minute and six second epic
which premiered as Jack Saunders’ Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1 in March
“…marks a new chapter for the seemingly irrepressible artist… sky shattering vocals worthy of Steven Tyler or Axl Rose” – The Independent
“Yungblud makes [his] grand return with an epic new single.” – DIY
with Yungblud attempting to embrace his truth.” – CLASH
Hello’]… might well be his Bohemian Rhapsody” – The London Standard
