Respeggt install second in-ovo system in AnkumThe two companies partnered and installed the first in-oxo sexing system in 2022 to support Germany’s male chick culling ban
HsinJuHSU | iStockPhoto.comGerman genetics company Lohmann Deutschland installed its second in-ovo sexing system in its Ankum-based hatchery
The hormone-based sexing company Respeggt’s Circuit technology was first installed in Lohmann’s hatchery in 2022 after the announcement of the groups’ partnership
“We are very pleased to be able to double our capacity for in-ovo sexing at Lohmann Deutschland in Ankum
This shows that we have been able to prove our practice and capacity maturity over the past year,” stated Martijn Haarman
“Despite the difficult economic situation in Europe last year
animal welfare and the production of more animal-friendly foodstuffs continue to be in high demand
Our sustainable solution to end chick culling means we can serve this demand well.”
Lohmann’s hatchery is the only hatchery in Germany that uses in-ovo sexing technology
Eggs produced through the Respeggt system are labelled with a “Free of Chick Culling” guarantee
“To be able to meet the increased demand for in-ovo sexed chicks using the Respeggt process
an additional circuit will be commissioned at the hatchery in Ankum in the near future.”
Around the same time the first Respeggt system was installed in Lohmann’s hatchery, hatchery equipment company HatchTech announced an agreement with supermarket chain REWE Group to take full ownership of Respeggt
HatchTech said it planned to accelerate international growth by utilizing its established network in the industry
Female hatching eggs contain a gender hormone in the allantoic fluid that is collected from each egg on the ninth day of incubation
The sample is collected after a laser creates a miniscule hole in the shell that is immediately sealed with beeswax to minimize contamination
After the fluid sample is evaluated using a patented marker
a color change on the marker will identify the sex of the chick depending on if the gender hormone was present or not, allowing producers to separate males from females before hatch

In 2011 Ullrich Kasselmann decided that the German competition calendar needed to be spiced with an indoor show circuit for professional as well as amateur dressage riders
Kasslemann recognized the need for shows at which riders could compete indoor during the quiet winter months and prepare their horses for a new level or expose inexperienced horses to a new level in a stress-free
The Ankum Dressage Club (ADC) was founded and in six years time its ADC shows have become a tremendous success
the club boasts incredible statistics for a local competition venue in Ankum
"Around six years ago, due to the changing competition landscape, we decided to come together and try to establish a competition series that would offer a platform for professionals as well as amateur riders," Kasselmann confirmed. "We have the See- und Sporthotel next door to the auction centre and there we offer international top conditions such as the High Score Performance Ground footing
It was only logical for the P.S.I Sport and Auction center in Ankum to become the home base for the the Ankum Dressage Club thank to its perfect location."
Especially the stress-free and low key environment are highly appreciated by top riders who want to show their inexperienced horses
or by amateurs who are not used to competing in highly electrical show environments
riders can deliberately prepare their young horses for top sport
That starts with young horse classes A-M and goes through classes specifically designed after the German young horse series “Nürnberger Burgpokal” and the “Louisdor-Preis” and then further to the Grand Prix," said Ullrich
and in 2018 even Children have classes custom-made for their abilities
We created classes for age groups in which many of the uncommonly offered national level FEI tests can be ridden."
and many more celebrity riders can be spotted in Ankum on weekends for the event
and young riders in Ankum creates a very special atmosphere
in which everyone can learn from each other
and at this 'Come-Together' there is an additional opportunity for discussion between trainers
The Ankum Dressage Club will host two more show weekends in 2017: On 25 - 29 October 2017 and on 8 - 12 November 2017

Former Chicago firefighters came from as far away as Phoenix to join current members of the department at the new clubhouse of the Black Fire Brigade
After more than 30 years with the Chicago Fire Department
Quention Curtis had grown weary of the discriminatory hiring practices that have cost the city nearly $92 million in settlements since 2008
Race and sex discrimination lawsuits have for decades dogged a department that didn’t welcome its first female firefighters until 1986
and which has discrimination lawsuits pending from as recently as 2016
“Everything that blacks have ever gotten on this force
now an emergency medical technician with the rank of lieutenant
“From the consent decree under Harold Washington to the class-action that got us the first 111 black firefighters — if we wanted anything
Quention Curtis founded the Black Fire Brigade
as a place for black firefighters to find fellowship and to mentor young blacks interested in joining the department
black firefighters from across the city will converge for a ribbon-cutting at their new clubhouse
It’s a place for fellowship and support when confronted by departmental racism
It’s a place from which to mentor black youth
a place where more young black men and women can be helped to prepare for and pass the firefighters exam
who in February bought the longtime home of the Gaelic Fire Brigade
The Irish firefighters group put the building on the market last summer
Curtis’ brethren came from far and wide to help refurbish the city’s first clubhouse for black firefighters
I had guys who actually came and were in tears
saying they were never allowed in this building under the former tenants,” he said
We’ve never come together as a whole to discuss our issues
Working on the clubhouse — even something as simple as choosing photos for the walls — has led to poignant moments
the brigade hosted a photo shoot for black female firefighters
In attendance was the very first — Mattie Rawski
They all wanted a picture with her,” he said
a photo shoot for the men was just as emotional
He was the first black fire department commissioner who’d come up through the ranks
We all feel a part of something,” Curtis said
A gathering of black women firefighters at the new home of the Black Fire Brigade included Mattie Rawski
Brooks and Rawski and a few hundred black firefighters are expected Saturday
honoring the 13 black firefighters who have died in the line of duty
Two awards will be presented — one honoring the most recent badge on that wall
fighting a fire at a vacant South Side building where a roof and wall collapsed
Also killed was firefighter Edward Stringer
The inaugural Corey Ankum Leadership Award will go to his son
he asked his mother to bring him to the Brigade
you’d know why he deserves the award,” Curtis said
The second award is named for Arthur “Lee” Lewis
who brought the 1998 class-action suit over the city’s discriminatory handling of a 1995 firefighters entrance exam
the city agreed to hire 111 bypassed black firefighters and pay $78.4 million to nearly 6,000 who never got that chance
The first to receive that award is Eric Washington
a black firefighter who in 2016 rallied his peers to collect and deliver thousands of cases of water to Flint
after the water there became poisoned with lead
our kids who are dying in the streets,” he said
“We have a responsibility to expose as many young black men and women to the fire service as possible
The black community suffers for lack of exposure.”

Have you ever wondered why so many people end up with impacted wisdom teeth
and often require expensive surgical removal
A University of Saskatchewan (USask) graduate student researcher says your childhood diet may have something to do with it
“Dialing back the clock just a few hundred years to before the Industrial Revolution
we don’t see impacted wisdom teeth in most people
including our great-great-great-great grandparents,” said Elsa Van Ankum
an evolutionary developmental anthropology PhD student in the Department of Anatomy
Physiology and Pharmacology in USask’s College of Medicine
“While working as a University of Alberta undergraduate student analyzing skeletons at archeological sites in Greece and China
I couldn’t help but compare their straight teeth to my own orthodontically challenged teeth
I’ve had braces and all four wisdom teeth removed
“I started to question why braces and wisdom tooth surgeries were so widespread today
and I’ve been following this thread ever since.”
Many things in the diet changed after the Industrial Revolution
including consuming soft-textured foods that were now being processed in factories by machines that partly ‘chewed’ our foods before we bought them
Van Ankum has found that mice raised on a soft food diet that was also deficient in vitamin D tend to have smaller
Vitamin D is important for healthy bone and tooth formation and growth
Lack of vitamin D also appeared to result in wider tooth roots
Because humans and mice process vitamin D in slightly different ways
Van Ankum is travelling to Britain to collect data from human skeletal remains excavated from archeological sites
She is sampling skeletal remains from before and after 1850
the year that serves as a general marker of when dietary changes due to the Industrial Revolution become evident in teeth and jawbones
Van Ankum plans to test whether wisdom tooth formation and jaw shape and size differ between pre- and post-Industrial populations
“Wisdom tooth surgeries are painful and costly. For instance, over a period of four years, even just one insurance provider in Saskatchewan processed 13,500 wisdom tooth extraction surgeries, costing $2.2 million dollars,” said Van Ankum.
“My PhD study is the first to test if the timing of molar development is linked to food texture
and jaw form using human archeological samples
We are closer to explaining why our wisdom teeth give us such problems
which could lead to non-invasive strategies
Van Ankum has presented her preliminary research findings at several academic conferences since 2019
and made an award-winning presentation at the 2020 meeting of the Canadian Association for Biological Anthropology
Her work is supervised by USask Professor Dr
“This project is an example of foundational science,” said Van Ankum
“This type of research seeks to understand why nature does what it does
towards one day shaping policy development and practical applications for dental patients in Canada and beyond.”
She’ll also further explore the links between vitamin D and tooth development in mice
using the information gleaned from human skeletal studies in Britain
She hopes to shed light on why differences in tooth size
shape and eruption can occur across time periods
“I feel grateful to be a part of this process
especially at a time with many exciting avenues of collaboration between disciplines.”
The research has been supported by the Canada Foundation for Innovation
a Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Grant
an NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Award
NSERC Alexander Graham Bell PhD Canada Graduate Scholarship
and a Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship
