A no-hit artist and Minor League Pitcher of the Year for the Yanks Arnsberg never fully panned out as a big-league hurler It does not take a very deep dive for the volatility of pitching in the Major League Baseball draft to become evident. It is an inherently risky business, and the Yankees found that out the hard way with one particular top selection in the 1983 June draft That was when the Yankees made 19-year-old right-handed pitcher Brad Arnsberg the ninth overall pick of the Secondary Phase Arnsberg did make his big-league debut with the Yankees—more than most can say—and he stuck around for parts of six seasons in the majors He was only able to find short-term success amidst injury trouble and bouncing around teams and was gone from The Show after his age-28 season but unfortunately for both him and the Yanks How They Left: Traded to Texas Rangers in November 1987 Bradley James Arnsberg developed his game and his status as an all-around athlete in Medford Arnsberg was an All-State tight end and also accomplished basketball player But the 6-foot-4 righty starred on the mound enough to be taken by Cleveland in the 19th round of the 1981 MLB Draft Arnsberg instead opted to play ball at Merced College in California and was selected several more times in later January and June drafts and Angels all making bids to come to terms with Arnsberg He resisted until the aforementioned Secondary Phase of the June ‘83 draft when the Yankees convinced him to put pen to paper Arnsberg quickly set about impressing his new team early on in his days as a pitching prospect the 20-year-old tossed 158.2 impressive innings across 23 starts for Single-A Greensboro The highlight of Arnsberg’s season was a May no-hitter at the expense of the Savannah Cardinals the righty went 14-2 with a sparkling 1.59 ERA and 0.991 WHIP the Pride of Merced seemed to be living up to what the Yankees had seen in him Born the same day as Kal Daniels in 1963 and passing through the Eastern League one year later, Brad Arnsberg won the 1985 ERA title (1.59) and tied for the lead in wins (14) for the Albany-Colonie Yankees.#MiLBmemories pic.twitter.com/tqZPkWZf1R The success that Arnsberg found did not go unnoticed, either. A 1985 article in the New York Times boasted the young hurler as one of the system’s best pieces leading the charge for a solid group of pitching prospects we’re going to have problems getting anyone to make it.” the quote now rings somewhat ironic given Arnsberg’s inclusion on this very list This praise was not unwarranted, with two impressive seasons under his belt and a 42-inning scoreless streak, the outlook for Arnsberg’s future in the Bronx was a bright one. He was named the Yankees’ 1985 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and Baseball America dubbed him New York’s best prospect ahead of the ‘86 campaign Even after a shakier season for Triple-A Columbus (4.21 ERA and 1.246 WHIP in an admittedly league-high 177.1 innings) Arnsberg trailed only Jay Buhner on BA’s pre-1987 Yankees top 10 I’ve already covered how delicate and volatile pitching can be and Arnsberg unfortunately serves as a good reminder of that concept Arnsberg got his call to the big leagues in September of that year making his debut in a three-inning outing against the Angels Arnsberg spent most of the next season with Triple-A to continued success before returning to the big club in August He tossed 19.1 unconvincing innings with the Yankees that season in a disappointing run for what would ultimately be his last in pinstripes Arnsberg was sent to the Texas Rangers as a player to be named later from a previous deal to acquire catcher Don Slaught putting a close to the rookie’s time in New York Arnsberg injured his elbow and missed all of 1988 and parts of the ‘89 season recovering from Tommy John surgery among the earlier recipients of the procedure Arnsberg was able to return to the big leagues with Texas in 1989 tossing 48 respectable innings with the Rangers and earning five saves along the way — one of which even came to close out the legendary Nolan Ryan’s 300th victory That solid 1990 season would sadly be the top of the mountain for Arnsberg as he disappointed in the following year in just 9.2 innings before signing on with Cleveland for the ‘92 campaign surrendering 14 earned runs in just 10.2 April innings ultimately putting a close to Arnsberg’s MLB career Comeback bids across the next year and a half with the Cubs and after a season in Taiwan with the CPBL’s Wei Chuan Dragons even if he did show flashes in the minor leagues and with other clubs The Rangers were the first team to give him a shot and he was a pitching coach for three different minor-league affiliates before the Expos made him their bullpen coach in 2000 Arnsberg soon became Montreal’s pitching coach and followed that with stints in the same position for the Marlins He technically won a World Series with Florida in 2003 as well though he was fired midseason along with the manager who brought him aboard in a shakeup that led Jack McKeon to skipper the Fish to October glory Arnsberg last coached at the big-league level in 2011 and currently works with Matt Herges as the Diamondbacks’ rehab pitching coordinators followed him into the behind-the-scenes ranks after his own career ended at Louisiana Tech as the Yankees were the first pro team to hire Kyle and he was their bullpen catcher from 2015-16 He transitioned to a front-office role in player development and has since moved on to the Phillies and Reds Taking pitchers in the draft is always risky business Brad Arnsberg serves as a reminder of just that Unable to pan out in the big leagues and with some major injuries along the way we will just have to wonder what could have been with Arnsberg Bob TewksburyFull List (to date) A voter casts his ballot at a polling station in Arnsberg of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) are taking the lead According to Friday's survey conducted by the Forsa Institute support for CDU and CSU stood at 29 percent compared with 21 percent for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and 15 percent for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's SPD It takes a majority of the 630 seats in the Bundestag to form a stable federal Arnsberg leaves a polling station after voting in Arnsberg either observed and verified directly by the reporter or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources she looked toward her years ahead with fear she dreaded the idea of becoming lonely and “useless in old age.”  I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life sitting on a couch The city where she lived in central Germany did not offer many volunteering opportunities to pensioners at the time she watched on Facebook as her friend Uwe Künkenrenken detailed his visits to a kindergarten to play music and participate in theater with children was engaging with kids from the same kindergarten by reading to them and teaching German to refugee students.  an engaged life well into old age is the norm where the Künkenrenkens live The product of a decadeslong project to build an aging-friendly destination quaint west German town of Arnsberg might be one of the most successful examples of senior-friendly urban development in the world A city department like no other: the Fachstelle Zukunft Alter—the Department of Future Aging.  Arnsberg’s Department of Future Aging (DFA) has its roots in foresight when then-city administrator Hans-Josef Vogel launched a citywide survey for the aging population.  conducted in 1995 with 28,000 respondents over 50 It explored residents’ wishes and expectations for old age They emphasized a desire to participate in social life to actively contribute to society and to continue learning in old age They didn’t want to live alone in their twilight years The information set into motion a mindset shift that fundamentally altered Arnsberg’s future the city’s approach to aging had been classically “deficit-oriented”—focused on what seniors could no longer do and primarily putting resources into nursing homes rather than creating programs that capitalized on what they could still offer.  Today “it is about strengthening resources and capacities and enabling elderly people to stay or become active citizens,” said Martin Polenz with a staff of two and a project budget of just €20,000 (approximately USD$24,000) per year its imprint on the city is unmistakable—both figuratively and literally Not only does the DFA support more than 200 projects through advice and direction but Polenz and his colleagues also collaborate with other departments in the city acting as advisors across the city government They work especially closely with the Department of Citizens Involvement and the Department of Planning and Building to ensure that senior-oriented planning isn’t just woven into the social fabric of the city supported or inspired by the DFA touch every sector in Arnsberg the city has numbered benches every 200 meters in some of its markets and on the promenade along the River Ruhr The benches provide essential resting spots but with an added bonus for people experiencing dementia: “If someone is lost they can call for assistance quoting the bench number,” Polenz says.  Volunteers in Arnsberg are available to travel with older people as bus companions on market days This allows seniors to continue shopping for themselves and engaging with city life with a sense of security Affordable residential complexes with small units and accessibility measures also dot the city equipped with optional assistance tailored to individual needs to allow seniors who wish to live independently to do so for longer.  But the spinoff impacts of the DFA’s influence show the systemic nature of the city’s mindset shift and illustrate the snowball effect a citywide commitment like Arnsberg’s can have.  One of the city’s most successful projects to develop Arnsberg as a dementia-friendly city Started as an initiative to meet the needs of people with dementia and their families it eventually grew into a dementia network.  citizens were called upon by the DFA to contribute ideas in their areas of work and interest “Almost 400 citizens turned up with ideas at the inaugural meeting,” Polenz recalled programs to change public attitudes about dementia provide information about the disease and reduce fear of contact with people with dementia have been implemented. Research from 2012 to 2015 found that of the 71 “multipliers” of the lab—people who spread the work of the lab by bringing their learnings into their personal and professional environments—62% felt that their knowledge of dementia had increased and 93% felt secure and empathetic while interacting with people with dementia.  One of the multipliers involved in the city’s dementia network is Dr a geriatrician who built a special 10-bed ward in a local hospital for hospitalized seniors who might be at risk of delirium an abrupt change in the brain that can cause mental and emotional confusion and disruption which has been shown to reduce the risk of delirium by 30% to 50% and reduce the rate of falls by 42%.  inspired by her friends’ vibrant retired lives Borzel made a life-altering decision: she moved to Arnsberg.  she was put in touch with the city’s senior citizens’ advisory council “I was welcomed with open arms and contributed as a member of the press team of the council until last year,” says Borzel she joined the editorial team of SICHT a quarterly magazine printed by the city and run by seniors for seniors I have enjoyed contributing to intergenerational programs in schools and theater held specifically for the elderly,” Borzel says And while Arnsberg’s vibrant senior social scene has kept Borzel company living alone in old age other programs help keep some seniors living together longer.  One example is Café Zeitlos (Timeless Cafe), an intergenerational initiative that aims to provide an inclusive space for people with dementia and their caregivers to unwind and mingle with people of all ages and create art people with dementia stay at home all day with their caregivers where there is a hierarchy in the relationship—the caregiver is in a position of power gives them a chance to communicate on an equal footing Studies show that art intervention into everyday care can mitigate depression and apathy and have positive effects on the mood of people living with dementia.  Café Zeitlos facilitated socialization for Walter Rupert Rupert looked after his wife for the 18 years that she had dementia “Martin introduced me to Café Zeitlos when it opened and it became my weekly break while I was busy taking care of my wife,” he said when I met him in 2019 at his home In 2015, when Germany’s erstwhile President Joachim Gauck visited Arnsberg, he said it impressed him to see that “with the help of municipal programs people are adapting specifically to a society that is living longer.” “In Germany, most local administrations provide only information and counseling services to help older persons and persons with dementia find points of support in their city,” says Anne-Sophie Parent, who has worked for 28 years on aging in the European Union and is now the Secretary General of the European Covenant on Demographic Change which brings together stakeholders to work on active and healthy aging.  “Arnsberg’s co-production approach is innovative because the city involves older persons and persons with dementia as key actors in the solutions that are developed for them,” Parent says a key element for them to feel valued and included in the life of their city.”     Parent says that Arnsberg’s work is “exemplary and replicable in other European cities with similar demographic profile and population size.” Polenz notes that limited resources and not having legal authority over stakeholders mean that DFA cannot push anyone for results “We can only give inspiration and lead by example,” he says.  Life in Arnsberg has not only given her ways to occupy herself fruitfully in old age I would probably have wasted away in loneliness by now,” she says This story first appeared on Reasons to archaeologists said that the items left behind were a testament to the last hours of people who were cruelly murdered German archaeologists have revealed some of the poignant artifacts that they have unearthed at three sites where the Nazis slaughtered 208 forced laborers just before the end of World War II and a prayer book are among the everyday items that have been dug up from sites in the Arnsberg Forest which is situated in a mountainous area in the North-Rhine Westphalia region of Germany gunned down 208 Russian and Polish forced laborers in the period from 20 to 23 March 1945 The slaughter took place in three separate locations in the Arnsberg Forest The first round of killings was carried out near the town of Warstein in the Langenbach Valley when Nazi troops forced 71 prisoners (10 men and one child) to march into the forest after telling them to leave their belongings on the side of the road as they would come back to collect them A firing squad then shot the unsuspecting victims after which the corpses were interred in mass graves — but only when the soldiers had helped themselves to anything that they wanted from the bodies The soldiers took all of the cash held by the prisoners The victims’ clothing was distributed to German people living nearby Most of the artifacts on display from the archeological dig were recovered from this first location but that the artifacts also provided valuable information about the manner in which this slaughter was conducted these personal possessions such clothing decorated with beads and buttons and crockery have lain underground along with evidence of the massacre and even the shovels used to cover the corpses It was in this location that 57 laborers were forced to dig trenches that had been laid out in a zig-zag pattern Little did they realize that they were digging their own graves Fewer artifacts were recovered from here suggesting that the Nazi forces were better prepared to hide the evidence of their evil actions The last site excavated was near the town of Meschese at a place called Eversberg The Nazis used hand grenades to create a pit They then lined up 80 victims along the top of the hole This mass grave was hidden under a paddock in which cows grazed archaeologists found over 50 items including Russian coins It is likely that the Nazis viewed these things with disdain but the archaeologists believe that these items would have held a special place in the hearts of the victims There were no bodies exhumed during the course of the excavation since American troops forced former members of the Nazi Party to exhume the bodies at the first two locations and bury them in a nearby cemetery This process was photographed and filmed by the Americans It was not until November 1946 that an informant told the British military of the mass grave the British exhumed the bodies of the massacre victims and arranged for them to be reinterred at the Fulmecke Cemetery in Meschede alongside the victims of the other two massacres this could change in the future as there is a renewed push to undertake a genealogical study to positively identify more of the anonymous victims and bring closure to their families Read another story from us: Genocide And War Crimes – The Worst Japanese Massacres of WWII the executive head of the Westphalia-Lippe region said: “We have been 'People who come from a war zone connect loud bangs more with shots and bombs than with New Year’s Eve fireworks' I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice Setting off fireworks at refugee accommodation and on the grounds of asylum centres in the German town of Arnsberg on New Year's Eve has been banned Authorities fear the loud sounds could have a traumatic effect on refugees who have fled war zones There is also concern the fireworks could result in potential injuries said “people who come from a war zone connect loud bangs more with shots and bombs than with New Year’s Eve fireworks," adding that the sale of rockets and firecrackers to residents of refugee shelters had been prohibited Signs informing people about the ban have been placed at the shelters In an effort “to avoid reawakening memories in people who have fled war and conflict of the horrors that threatened them," the town's fire brigade suggested people should consider not launching fireworks at all “For this reason it seems sensible to prohibit the customary New Year’s fireworks in refugee shelters and the surrounding areas," said Dr Bauer. Last year, people in Germany spent 120 million Euros (£89 million) on fireworks to celebrate the New Year. brain-bladder connection there is an ongoing dialogue where the brain tells the bladder whether it’s okay to go to the bathroom A man has to go to the bathroom really badly.via Canva/Photos the “The more you go to this place where you’re arriving at home and having to go to the bathroom immediately the more that pattern is going to start to develop,” Stern said A woman on the toilet.via Canva/Photos now that we know there’s a brain-bladder relationship happening Because it seems like the closer we get to home because the body isn’t sure where it’s safe to go many of our systems are running on ancient evolutionary data that meant that going to the bathroom in the wrong place could get you eaten by a wild animal communicating with our bladder and bowels without us knowing it so we have a safe and comfortable place to go to the bathroom it would be cooler if the brain tols us we have to go pee or poop after we opened the front door instead of a mile from home Duisburg and Arnsberg are the test beds for new remote assisted-living technologies that enable the elderly to live independently at home for as long as is possible secure in the knowledge that medical care and other assistance are never too far away The tests demonstrate how such a system can have a sustainable business model.  This project helps us to convince communities housing associations and senior citizens and their relatives that smart technology can be a big part of their solution Europe’s increasingly ageing population – and the services required for those who cannot fully care for themselves – are putting a lot of financial pressure on communities and healthcare services Experts predict that the costs for cities of providing health services for the elderly will more than double by 2030 A shortage of nurses to care for the elderly is also hampering healthcare services Building more care homes for seniors is one solution Another has been provided by the EU-funded Smart Service Power project which has developed an Internet of Things (IoT) platform – mainly accessible via natural language assistance software – for use with internet-connected sensor technologies to help the elderly live independently at home for as long as possible The platform can remotely monitor a person’s condition in real time and alert healthcare emergency services if help is needed The technology assures users that medical help will be provided when they need it The system can also predict when it might be better for a person to move into a senior care home The project team believes that the ‘smartification’ of a person’s home through internet-connected technologies has the potential to fill some of the gaps due to the shortage of nursing staff support the desire of many elderly people to stay at home longer alleviate relatives’ concerns about their parents’ care and cut costs for municipalities and healthcare services The platform integrates remote-assistance functions from the fields of e-health it can receive information from a combination of internet-connected sensors that track a movement Some examples include a special skin patch to monitor moisture levels through skin tension and transmit information to the platform It can alert the participant or a health service if the person is not drinking enough water or is suffering from dehydration A sensor on a weighing scale collects data and evaluates any abnormal change in a person’s weight – a sudden increase in weight indicates water retention which A connected drug dispenser allows the platform to measure out a person’s medication each day and ensures they do not forget to take their drugs and take them at the right time As people tend to forget to wear a tracker the systems sensors the person via a ‘time of flight’ sensor in the ceiling which detects falls and monitors whether the person recovers quickly or needs emergency assistance Participants can also maintain their cognitive skills through the service which provides interactive games to train the memory One of the project’s major innovations is to automatically record all the data from the various Internet-connected sensors on a single platform providing proactive support for participants and tracking their medical condition through ‘big data’ techniques and pattern analysis Intelligent algorithms recognise emergencies in the home and can identify individual needs which is most intuitive way for interactive communication with users who can also choose how providers can access their personal data The project has also developed innovative sensors monitor participants and predict whether they need preventative care Business models sustainably fund the service Innovative software and a new approach to the ethical use of personal data have been developed Some project members are planning to establish a public-private partnership to turn the research results into real services that can be marketed to municipalities Duisburg and Arnsberg as cities that represent the range of services needed across Europe for remote Total investment for the project “Smart Service Power” is EUR 2 808 606 with the EU’s European Reds have announced their 2023 coaching staff House are all returning – but we knew that already The rest of the coaching staff will be: Joel McKeithan as the hitting coach Terry Bradshaw as the assistant hitting coach Kyle Arnsberg as major league coach/coordinator of advance scouting Joel McKeithan was with the organization last year and was the assistant hitting coach in both 2021 and 2022 and now he takes over the job as the hitting coach The 31-year-old was the Detroit Tigers minor league hitting coordinator before joining the Reds organization Terry Bradshaw will take over the assistant hitting coach role Prior to joining the Reds he was with the Kansas City Royals organization for parts of 23 seasons He had served as their minor league hitting coordination from 2013-2017 before being promoted to the Royals hitting coach in 2018 He served in that role until May of 2022 when he was fired They will be backed up by assistant hitting coach He had been a hitting coach in the Houston Astros farm system for three seasons before taking over as the New York Mets hitting coordinator in 2022 New first base coach Collin Cowgill had been a manager in the Seattle Mariners farm system for the last two seasons He had a winning record in both seasons while he was the manager for the Arkansas Travelers Matt Tracy joins the organization to take over as the bullpen coach He had spent the previous three seasons working for the Toronto Blue Jays as a pitching analyst and development coordinator His pitchers will be working with new bullpen catcher Joey Singley Kyle Arnsberg has been with the Reds organization since 2020 He spent that year at the alternate site before joining the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts where he was the catching coach and game planning coach In 2022 he joined the big league club as an assistant coach Now he’s also going to be in charge of coordinating the advanced scouting for the club The Reds have hired Alon Leichman to be their assistant pitching coach. You can read more about Leichman here. Doug Gray has been covering Cincinnati Reds baseball since the 2006 season. Current bylines here, at Reds Minor Leagues, and Baseball America. Past bylines at The Athletic and a few other places I've forgotten and or cease to exist. Forever tired. I hope that David Bell gets a decent roster to work with this year. I’m just hoping for competitive baseball! Last year was brutal. Glad to see that they hired hitting coaches from such successful organizations. The Royals and the Tigers. Well, maybe they are really good coaches. Well, Tim Lamonte had been with the Astros. Collen Cowgill and Freddy Benavides are possibly first alternates when or if David Bell gets fired for another lousy season of Reds’ baseball. Well, I’m pretty excited by all this. Aren’t you? Those who can, do. Those who can’t , coach. Those who can do neither write comments on MLB discussion boards. Privileges of retirement-no longer have to do. However watching the Reds debacle makes one want be the boss just one more day. How long have you been retired LDS? Two years for me and I am bored silly. I was hoping to spend my golden years at GABP but there was a change in those plans. I did get married last month, so perhaps that will keep me busy. How about you? What do you do with your time? V4L, closing in on 3 years, but I accepted a buyout and left about a bit early. Not really bored. Just do t know what I want to do next. @Votto, Congratulations on your marriage, I just got married 2 weeks ago to. Retiring the end of the year. Like V4L I am a bit nervous. Spent 20 years in military and 30 as a manager in industry. My wife is going to have her hands full. A couple of things Im considering are volunteering at City Gospel. It’s a homeless shelter that sits on old Crosley Field site. Another option is volunteering at the VA. A fact that gets very little attention from our politicians is 22 Veterans a day commit suicide. They could all use are help. I’ve been encouraging you to apply for the job for quite some time, LDS, But, please, it has to be for at least a year or two. One day would allow you to avoid accountability entirely. @Greenmtred, sometimes it only takes a day to fire the deadwood and replace them with qualified people. Any experienced manager should be able to recognize the Reds organizational dysfunction. Only the dreamers that think the Reds have a plan don’t see it. The plan is to enrich Castellini as it has been for the entire time of his ownership. Maybe, LDS, but everybody thinks they have the answer, and we shouldn’t shirk accountability if our answers prove wrong. @greenmtred, ever been through a company takeover? The cleanup crew in the early days is seldom the folks that manage the enterprise going forward. I’ve been through 10-12, depending on whether I count the LBO’s. Assessing managers and staff is usually more than a day, but in the case of the Reds, it’s pretty obvious. So we have a retired Hall Of Fame QB as our assistant hitting coach now?….What have we got to lose I guess. 🙂 I have been a Reds fan since rhe 70s. All the moves they are making are just moves. Nothing to be excited about as a Reds fan. Like their moves at catcher ? Outfield ? Looking forward to Joey Votto return in his last guarnteed season. Never have I been so happy. These Coaches, don’t seem to be the answer to me. I would love to look forward to summers again. How can a once proud organization give up.As long as I see the name David Bell I will know that’s exactly what we’ve done You have to wonder how surrounding himself with yes men has served Bob in the produce business? He has been successful, so maybe it works with parsley and other green things. It hasn’t served him well with the Reds, but I doubt he has enough insight to realize it. I think Bob and Son actually understand the Produce business. David, I think Dick Williams did wonders reworking the front office. Just because he’s left doesn’t mean that the structure he set in place is gone. I’ve largely been impressed by the moves that Krall has made. Enough of the half measures and striving to be mediocre just because, for instance, we’re hosting the All-Star game. If they weren’t gonna be ultra competitive in the playoffs, they needed to scrap the course they were on and do it right. Sell the quality players on a .500 team for top notch prospects and rebuild from the ground up. They’re mid rebuild now and they need to stay the course. I’m excited to see the next Reds core led by soon to be veterans like Lodolo, Greene, India, and Stephenson guiding prospects like EDLC, Marte, Arroyo, Collier, Williamson, Abbott, et al. The future’s so bright, I’ve gotta wear shades. I like your Red’s optimism. Keep those shades on. Well that’s out of way. Coaching hires rarely excite me. Hope there is one or two players added that will give me some hope I’m a little confused with news from the hitting department. Have the Reds actually hired a hitting coach? More scapegoats for the ownership group…….it’s not reasonable to expect them to make a 20+ game improvement with this roster, including the field manager. The only thing that will move the meter for me this offseason is if they lock up some of their young core and/or spend necessary money in the FA market for deals that extend past 2024. Otherwise, Phil can enjoy selling bobbleheads. I’ll keep busy doing other things…..and spend my entertainment dollars into venues who actually try to entertain me. To me, this shows David bell is on thin ice. If you’re field manager has ownerships confidence, one would think coaches with better track records from more respected organizations would be hired and given multiple year contacts. This shows me this is David bells last year. Derek Johnson might survive since he is also the pitching coordinator. Let me ask why would you come to Cincinnati right now if you are established as a coach knowing the team is not going to be competing and be out of a job in less than a year again? Perhaps Derek Johnson will succeed David Bell as the manager in the tradition of Bryan Price. Wash, Rinse, Repeat. Not sure what the organization expects to achieve with these changes, but as long as Bell continues as manager it’s irrelevant. In my view until change is made in ownership and field management, the Reds remain in limbo. Glad DeShields is gone and like that they’re opting for the young guy as hitting coach……seems to suggest they’re taking a more forward thinking approach. Of course that ignores the company men running the day-to-day—Benavides and Bell. Would love to see both replaced with hires from outside the organization and no ties to the ownership group, but I doubt Krall has that much latitude in his job. LDS is spot on. I’m underwhelmed by these selections. Bell seems to be invulnerable. Jim T, you should be commended for your work. You set a great example. As a 32-year Veteran, thank you. There’s no question that this building is an appendage to a historic museum, but its monolithic travertine finish gives Bez + Kock’s design a presence all of its own When geological complications scuppered the viability of Bez + Kock’s design to extend the Sauerland-Museum in Arnsberg, Germany, the architects had to start again. Judging from the completed building, what could have been a major blow turned out to be a blessing in disguise.  Resplendent in a 1,170 m² facade of textured travertine, the new addition is a positive civic presence, providing a elegant, poised form within the streetscape that deftly navigates the intersection between the historic and newer areas of the town.  It could all have been very different. In 2012 the museum, now known as the Museum and Cultural Forum South Westphalia, held a competition for an extension capable of staging large temporary exhibitions. These were impossible to house in the existing museum building, which dates back to 1605 and was not able to provide the necessary spatial or environmental conditions.  The architect decided to seize the ensuing redesign as an opportunity to confidently articulate the extension as a building, rather than conceal it within the hillside. The challenge was to do this without obscuring views of the original museum while also retaining the ‘English Promenade‘ historic public path that runs across the back of the site.  The three storey building appears monolithic, wrapped in a deep stone interrupted only by two trios of windows cut into the main elevation, their oblique form serving to emphasise the depth of the cladding. Another three are diagonally cut into the bridge link to frame splendid views towards the Brückenplatz square and River Ruhr, with a full-height window at the end of the link giving panoramic views of Arnsberg. A public terrace on the lower roof of the museum gives further views. According to Bez + Kock project manager Meredith Atkinson, the architect was always keen to use natural stone, as something ‘massive and weighted’ which was seen as appropriate for the museum, and encouraged the idea of a building growing out of the hill. ‘We also wanted it to be light in colour and friendly,’ she adds. Another factor was that the architects were keen to choose a relatively local stone: ‘We didn’t want to be shipping stone from India’. The practice initially looked at using the same Grauwacke local stone that had been proposed for the original retaining wall design. But this was too dark and, with too much variation in colour, did not suit the new building form.  Instead, the decided on travertine from Gauinger in south Germany – a stone also used extensively at the Grimm Museum in Kassel, designed by Kada Wittfeld Architektur. Bez + Kock specified that it be rough sawn and then bush hammered on its facing surface to give a softly textured surface.  ‘We were having an extensive amount of wall, so wanted to make sure there was enough texture so that it offered something to the eye,’ says Atkinson, adding that the colour had the required warmth and gentle amount of variation to avoid it looking too busy over such a large expanse of elevation. When it came to the composition of the travertine cladding, it was ‘the horizontality that mattered,’ she says. The length of the stones was left random depending on what the quarry provided – a more economic option – and ranges from 20-70cm. These were configured in courses of three different heights – 12, 20 and 30cm – a range chosen to accommodate the various window and door openings on the elevation, and also to add variety. To further emphasise the horizontality, the travertine has a 10mm mortar joint horizontally, but only a minimal vertical joint, with the stones positioned hard up against each other. Expansion joints are sealed with tinted, sanded silicon. Dealing with the window openings presented particular challenges due to both the different thermal coefficients of aluminium, stainless steel and stone and the different tolerances between how stonemasons and glaziers work, according to Atkinson.  The stone clad walls have a thermal performance of 0.19 W/(m²K), with the glazed part of the facade performing at 1.30 W/(m²K). While the travertine certainly played its part in the thermal performance, the 250mm concrete frame and 180mm insulation were also significant, said Atkinson. The redesign inevitably delayed the project, which completed last year some seven years after the initial competition for the extension, and included a refurbishment of the historic building. But, resplendent in its monolithic travertine cladding, it has surely been worth the wait – with the benefit of hindsight, the initial plan for a retaining wall could well have been a missed opportunity.  ‘I think the success of the project was taking the new requirements and making the most of them. We thought ‘let’s use this opportunity to show this building’ rather than trying to hide it,’ says Atkinson.  Latest articlesRIBAJ Spec: Architecture for Housing and Residential Development Webinar20 face of a worrying trend The first in a CNA Insider series on how an ageing Germany is leading the way in long-term care The clinic clowns are a group of Arnsberg volunteers who bring laughter and picture-perfect just a short while ago and cared for her in their house on a hill she was like three-quarters of Germans with dementia – they live at home “The last six years were difficult,” he admitted She could no longer speak and I had to see her face to know the couple represent the flip sides of ideal and reality: The type of idyllic ageing that picturesque Arnsberg a medieval West German town of population 80,000 is striving for – and the sober challenge of a dementia epidemic as its residents age one in five townsfolk is over the age of 65 that proportion will grow to almost one in three That is like senior citizens making up a third of the residents of Singapore’s Bukit Timah which has the world’s fourth-oldest population “We don’t know much about (the effects) yet because it’s never happened on this scale before,” said Mr Martin Polenz from the local government’s Future of Ageing department What is clear is that roughly 1 in 11 seniors develop dementia the youth are moving away for better opportunities – so seniors can no longer rely on their children to care for them WHEN A COMMUNITY GETS BEHIND SOCIAL INCLUSION as the early 1990s when Germany’s over-65 population was just under 15 per cent The local government modified the city’s infrastructure to make it more senior friendly – old folks can be seen out and about all over town walking along the wide pavements with their strollers full of groceries Others hang out in cafes with friends and glasses of schnapps “We don’t want our old folks to live on the isolated fringes of the city,” said Mr Polenz One volunteer at a nursing home for those with dementia said: “In the past people were hidden because when they were old these same nursing home residents are a visible part of town festivals and parties The town’s Department of the Future of Ageing far from being a top-down exercise in planning ahead set about tapping Arnsberg’s strength: Its community spirit the Learning Lab Dementia campaign was launched to crowdsource ideas on how to make the town more socially inclusive of those with dementia We wanted to make it more normal to live with dementia and we want to establish that for everybody.” Some 400 people came forward with ideas from running dance studios to sports clubs Even the circus from the community youth centre started recruiting seniors with generations are getting to know each other better and we have observed that more and more teenagers are starting to understand why it’s important,” said Mrs Fromm Among her enthusiastic participants: Mr Rupert The café was an immense source of support for him during the difficult last few years of his wife’s life when caring for her was making him socially isolated “Coming here was his one day in the week where he could enjoy the company of others and it was a great relief for him to leave the house and get a break,” said Mr Polenz whose children live about three hours’ drive away lit up when CNA Insider arrived and immediately began engaging the new faces in conversation And when the seniors played pretend with their handmade puppets cheeky Mr Rupert went around asking for kisses from each of the giggling ladies “He was a bit reserved and quiet at the beginning One of the town’s main goals is for residents to grow old in their own homes Not everyone is as capably independent as Mr Rupert That is where a service like ElHadri Senior Care comes in worked in ambulatory care for 20 years and realised that seniors needed more than just medical care They said anything was better than staying in a nursing home and today she runs a team of professional caregivers who go around to some 300 seniors’ homes to help with housework She wants to continue living alone at home – like roughly a third of all dementia patients in Germany do – but her illness has made chores like cooking on her own impossible she is visited by trained healthcare worker Reben Manuela who does chores alongside her – so that Mrs Muller doesn’t become completely dependent on having everything done for her – and helps her throw out forgotten old food Ms Manuela also oversees Mrs Muller’s medication and keeps a logbook of her condition which her children are kept updated on they will be able to spend quality time with their parents since we have taken care of everything else,” said Mrs El Hadri it can have a major impact on the quality of life of someone with dementia and their ability to be independent has gotten better over the two years of using ElHadri’s service the bed is already made; she prepares breakfast and coffee.” Mrs Muller cuts a figure of a woman who still takes pride in herself – from her neatly permed hair to the beautiful necklace around her neck – and shows off pictures of her family’s Caribbean cruise vacation On the living room wall hang more holiday photos of places like Cinque Terre and Asia When they withdraw into their protective shell and if they don’t have social-emotional support the disease progresses faster,” said Mrs El Hadri Home care like this doesn’t come cheap – but the good news is the cost is covered by Germany’s mandatory Long Term Care Insurance (LTCI) which everyone including employers contributes to the 23-year-old scheme has been updated to increase the benefits for those receiving care at home (some 70 per cent of LTCI beneficiaries) it now takes into account the needs of people with dementia – meaning for the first time it considers not just a person’s physical but also cognitive and psychological impairments and the need for care arrangements to address issues like social isolation The result of this expanded insurance coverage is that services like ElHadri have been “booming” seniors who need professional home care can get benefits ranging from 689 euros to 1,995 euros a month This can go to subsidising a huge chunk of the bill (ElHadri’s services though most clients still end up spending out of pocket depending on the level of services requested Germany is one of only a few countries with a dedicated compulsory long-term care insurance system; others include Japan the system covers a range of care-related costs to even informal care at home – providing allowances for modifying the living environment and social security benefits for family members who spend a significant amount of time as caregivers they understand that these systemic provisions aside success in creating an elderly- and dementia-friendly community depends on people rallying together With a small annual budget of 20,000 euros the Department of the Future of Ageing sources for community solutions and supports volunteers with the resources they need What helps is the strong sense of volunteerism pervasive in the German ethos “There is a culture of ‘if we want something And that is why among the many volunteers and idea-starters are seniors themselves They want to help build the future of elder-care that they themselves can enjoy  “I would like to stay in a shared community and stay active in life for a long time,” said Mrs Fromm of Café Zeitlos who volunteers at nursing homes dressed as a red-nosed clown and I can’t assume that they will be able to care for me on a regular basis and I would wish for myself that someone comes and spends quality time with me.” They believe laughter is not only the best medicine it also breaks down walls and helps build emotional connections with lonely Take one elderly nursing home resident suffering from Parkinson’s Disease Even the speech therapist couldn’t get through to her began singing the first few lines of a popular folk song then pretended to not know the rest of the lyrics She pleaded and begged the silent old lady to teach her the rest of the song “The speech therapist was so happy,” Ms Willie recounted “She asked if we could try to get the old lady to stick her tongue out and then to chew The magic of volunteer work isn’t just the effect it has on the beneficiaries Particularly if they are retirees looking to find purpose in life by doing something meaningful for the community The city council conducts courses to help such retirees find their path Said Mr Polenz: “(They) feel that without work You need to offer to them a chance to feel like they are still a valuable part of society All sorts of programmes involving senior volunteers have resulted from this One even set up a repair cafe where townsfolk can drop off broken items like radios The sense of inclusion was never more evident during CNA Insider’s stay in Arnsberg the sound of marching bands echoed through the streets as the marksmen – many in their 60s and older – made pit stops around the town They made it a special point to swing past St Anna’s Nursing Home where the residents were lined up in wheelchairs outside to eagerly drink in the songs and festivities As roses were handed out to the elderly ladies and schnapps tossed back with the men many are not around anymore,” she cried hoarsely “This is where the young and old meet again this is all still just the start of building a community where people can age in place and in grace “We are at the very beginning of this development and there are still improvements needed,” he said “We need to build a local culture of respect and responsibility where people can rely on the support of the neighbourhood.” CNA Insider’s trip to Germany was supported by the Lien Foundation, which has set out to encourage a dementia-friendly community in Singapore where some 78,000 people are reckoned to
