MW Storage has enlisted optimiser Entrix to commercialise 50MW/100MWh of the capacity of a project twice that size in the town of Arzberg
Entrix will trade half of the 100MW/200MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the Bavaria region once it is commissioned in April 2025
one of Europe’s largest batteries according to MW Storage
Entrix will play the BESS into ancillary services and day-ahead and intraday wholesale markets
and it claims to be able to minimise downtime and optimise the operational life of the batteries using an emphasis on close technical integration
The MW Storage Fund is primarily backed by investment firms Reichmuth Infrastructure and MW Storage while German distribution network operator (DNO) Bayernwerk and utility consortium Zukunftsenergie Nordostbayern GmbH (ZENOB) are minority investors
Although not mentioned in Entrix’s announcement, it appears to be the project deployed for MW Storage by system integrator Fluence
The announcement comes after a period of intense discussion around the evolving revenue opportunities, business case and risk management strategies in the German grid-scale storage market, which many see as one of the most attractive in Europe
While the ancillary services markets are beginning to saturate, most commentators say the volatility and depth of its wholesale market mean revenues will not drop like in the UK in 2023/24. Revenues and performance are also becoming more transparent with the emergence of more publicly-available indexes and benchmarks recently.
Entrix did not say whether its deal with MW Storage is a toll or a merchant
but a company of its size would not typically have the balance sheet to offer a toll
MW Storage has not said how the other half of the BESS will be commercialised
The owner-operator’s first project was in Switzerland and it also recently expanded to the Finnish market
the famed home goods store Crate and Barrel is turning 50

Each of the twelve teapots features a design by a world-famous artist
Janine Rewell and Julia Rothman participating
One teapot design will be unveiled at the beginning of each month
The history of the Arzberg Teapot traces back to the very origins of the famed home goods store
and the day it opened its doors back on December 7
was drawn to the simple shape of a teapot produced by the Arzberg porcelain factory in Germany
Segal originally purchased the teapot as a birthday present for his mother
but when he opened his first Crate and Barrel store in Chicago
he decided his customers would like its pure
The teapot was a hit with the new store’s clientele
and has been a staple ever since that day some fifty years ago

Weil advised MW Storage Fund with respect to a joint venture regarding the development
construction and operation of Germany's largest battery energy storage facility in Arzberg
Construction of the facility will begin shortly
with operations scheduled to start at the beginning of 2025
It will have a total output of 100 MW and a total storage capacity of 200 MWh
making it one of the largest battery energy storage systems in Europe
Further joint venture partners include Reichmuth Infrastructure
a leading Swiss asset management company for infrastructure investments in the mid-cap segment; ZENOB
a regional consortium of several municipalities for the construction of wind power and photovoltaic systems; and Bavarian local distribution system operator Bayernwerk AG
MW Storage Fund is an investment vehicle of Swiss KMU Partners AG that was launched specifically for the battery storage power plant project
The Weil team advising MW Storage Fund on this transaction was led by Munich Corporate partner Gerhard Schmidt and included counsel Andreas Fogel as well as associates Amelie Zabel, Severin Scholz, Laurin Schmidt and Christopher Schletter (all Corporate

A group of investors and utilities from Switzerland and Germany have inaugurated a 100MW/200MWh BESS project in Bavaria
deployed by Fluence – concurrent with separate announcements from S4 Energy and EnBW
The 2-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the town of Arzberg was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by Bavarian Prime Minister Dr
Markus Söder and State Secretary Martin Schöffel
Söder commented: “During periods of lull in solar and wind energy
battery storage is needed to ensure base load capacity and to balance tensions in the grid
The new storage facility in Arzberg will store regionally generated energy and feed it into the grid.”
The project’s main investors are Switzerland-based investment firms Reichmuth Infrastructure and MW Storage while German utilities Bayernwerk and Zukunftsenergie Nordostbayern GmbH (ZENOB) are minority investors
The BESS units were deployed by system integrator Fluence using its Cube product, with 312 units arranged in 26 arrays of 12. The project was first announced by Fluence and one of its parent companies Siemens in July 2021
when Siemens said it would handle project management and civil engineering works
The Wunsiedel project connects directly to a nearby 110 kV high-voltage transmission line
Bayernwerk is the largest distribution network operator (DNO) in Bavaria
while ZENOB is a consortium of utilities and other stakeholders deploying clean energy and energy system modernisation projects
The companies said the project represents an ‘interweaving’ of local and regional networks
estimates the country will need 23.7GW of energy storage by 2045
The announcement coincides with two other big news items in Germany’s large-scale BESS sector
Utility and independent power producer (IPP) EnBW will build a 100MW/100MWh BESS project in Marbach
“The timing for this project is ideal,” Wauschkuhn said. “Battery modules have become significantly cheaper
there is increasing demand on the energy markets for short-term dispatchable capacity
these two factors also improve the economics of large projects like this one.”
EnBW has previously said it will add storage to all its solar projects in Germany, which you can read more about on our sister site PV Tech
Just weeks after it acquired a 6GW portfolio of BESS projects in its home country of the Netherlands from developer Low Carbon
developer-operator S4 Energy has entered Germany with the acquisition of a 310MW portfolio
The seller is developer Terra One Climate Solutions

Construction is set to begin soon on a 100MW/200MWh battery storage project in Arzberg
through developer MW Storage and asset manager Reichmuth & Co Infrastructure
In the southeastern part of Germany near the border with Czechia
the project in Arzberg will be on the higher end of grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) project sizes in the German market
which is seeing something of a return to activity in 2022 and this year
The imminent start of construction was announced by Weil and MLL Legal
two companies which advised MW Storage on the developer’s formation of a joint venture (JV) to work on the project with infrastructure investment manager Reichmuth
With MW Storage and Reichmuth as majority shareholders
the E.On-owned distribution network provider Bayernwerk and municipal power production consortium ZukunftsEnergie Nordostbayern (ZENOB) are also involved in the JV
The two majority owners are both headquartered in Switzerland
while the energy companies are both local to the Bavarian region
MW Storage is itself backed by an asset manager, Swiss KMU. The developer put its first BESS project into operation in October 2020 in the Swiss municipality of Ingenbohl. The company noted at the time that the 20MW/18MWh project, performing frequency regulation for transmission system operator (TSO) Swissgrid, was funded without subsidies or public assistance
The company has done a similarly-sized project in Finland which went into operation a year after Ingenbohl
but to date those are the only two listed as part of its portfolio on MW Storage’s website
Global system integrator Fluence – which recently showed quarterly profit in financial results for the first time since its IPO – is MW Storage’s BESS supplier
having worked on the companies’ previous two projects
The Arzberg project was claimed to be the biggest BESS facility in Germany
according to the announcement from legal firm Weil
but only retain that title for a short time
Germany’s utility-scale BESS market is finally back on the rise and it is perhaps primed to accelerate
given growing commitments at national and European Union (EU) level to renewable energy
The main economic opportunities in Germany are for frequency regulation ancillary services and energy trading on the wholesale market
While the market enjoyed a short boom in the mid-2010s as an early adopter of battery storage for frequency regulation
primary control reserve (PCR) quickly became saturated
Growing shares of renewable energy and growing volatility in electricity markets across Europe in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine pushing up gas prices
have amplified the fundamental drivers for battery storage
while a waiver on fees storage operators in Germany were being charged for their use of the grid has been extended for three years
there is now also a market for secondary reserve (aFFR) which is pan-European
being rolled out across the continent’s grids
A feature article for our quarterly journal PV Tech Power (Vol.32) last year examined whether Germany’s utility-scale market was due for revival
despite having seen just 32MW of large-scale BESS deployed in 2021
The German market also saw some uplift from the launch of Innovation Tenders – government-backed reserve auctions for projects that combined two low-carbon technologies
which has resulted almost exclusively in contracts for solar-plus-storage plants – and so-called ‘NetzBooster’ (‘GridBooster’) projects
which are individual large-scale battery assets deployed to directly support the transmission network
One of those GridBoosters, to be delivered by Fluence, is 250MW/250MWh and could come online subject to regulatory approvals by 2025 while Fluence was awarded two more, each of 100MW/100MWh
In November, developer Kyon Energy got approval for a 137.5MW/275MWh BESS project in Germany’s Lower Saxony region, and while it might not be the biggest BESS in Europe as Kyon claimed
The MW Storage-Reichmuth JV project in Arzberg is scheduled to come online in early 2025
Germany’s biggest BESS project was Lausitz Battery Energy Storage System (60MW/52MWh)
at a coal plant operated by generator LEAG
Energy-Storage.news’ publisher Solar Media will host the 9th annual Energy Storage Summit EU in London, 20-21 February 2024. This year it is moving to a larger venue, bringing together Europe’s leading investors, policymakers, developers, utilities, energy buyers and service providers all in one place. Visit the official site for more info.
Developer Tion Renewables AG has acquired a 10MW/13MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Thuringia
The lithium-ion BESS is connected directly to the German electricity grid and is currently under construction
scheduled to come online in the second half of 2024
it will acquire 90% of the Thuringia project in two phases
with the project developer and seller to remain invested with 10%
The grid-scale BESS market in Germany has picked up in the past year, as explored in a special report in an edition of our quarterly journal PV Tech Power last year
Most recently, developed Kyon Energy revealed it had sold nearly 200MW of projects to investor Obton as part of a 600MW framework agreement while a 100MW/200MWh project started construction in Arzberg
Wind and solar project are prominent within Tion’s portfolio
however in November 2022 it acquired its first BESS project – a 8MW/9.3MWh in Bacup in the northwest of England
Although the project was expected to go live in the first half of 2023
the company confirmed in the same release announcing its Germany acquisition that it has exercised its right to withdraw from the purchase agreement in December 2023
due to “to subsequent delays in the construction phase
in particular relating to the grid connection.”
Grid connection delays represents one of the major challenges to deploying BESS
with interconnection queues flooded by far more projects than can be built or accomnodated for with network upgrades
UK transmission system operator (TSO) National Grid recently took steps to accelerate the connection of some 10GW of large-scale BESS projects by up to four years
Energy-Storage.news’ publisher Solar Media will host the 9th annual Energy Storage Summit EU in London, 20-21 February 2024. This year it is moving to a larger venue, bringing together Europe’s leading investors, policymakers, developers, utilities, energy buyers and service providers all in one place.
