AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) — Earlier this month five people were charged in the death of actor Matthew Perry
An autopsy revealed he died from the acute effects of ketamine
he had been receiving regular infusion treatments for depression
Ketamine has seen a huge surge in use in recent years as a treatment for depression
which is why it needs to be administered in very specific ways
DENT Neurologic Institute is one facility in Western New York that provides ketamine therapy
I went to DENT on Tuesday to speak to a doctor and a woman who relies on the therapy to learn more
Elizabeth shared that she's been battling depression her entire life
"It possible to get out of a deep depression," she said
"I tried so many different options and nothing had really worked."
That's until she tried ketamine infusions at DENT
"It's like turning on a light it really is," she said
"There was a point because of insurance I had to skip about four weeks or so and that put me back into a deep depression

Asbach: Old school anesthesia medication from the 1970s
So the cool thing about it is when it's used for anesthesia
much higher dosing than what we use for depression
it will essentially cause the patient to disconnect from their body where they don't feel pain
So that can be very helpful in an anesthetic setting
where maybe we need to set someone's fractured arm without anesthesia
then you can use ketamine to do that in a rather effective manner
What are the risks and benefits associated with ketamine treatment
when it was developed as an anesthesia medication
was developed because they were looking for an anesthesia med that would not cause your blood pressure to drop and would not suppress your breathing
And it's a great anesthesia med from that perspective
and we use ketamine quite frequently for those exact reasons
but it also has abuse potential that can be used in this party scene
and a lot of times people use it as a club drug because it causes you to have dissociation
we're typically doing it at a very low dose
So there are risks associated with it when it's used in the improper setting
If someone is just going out on the street or on the internet and buying ketamine
they'll come in and they'll meet with one of our providers
That's usually about a 45-minute conversation
and we go through things just to make sure that they're a good candidate
We want to make sure that they've tried many other options
We want to make sure they're treatment-resistant
but also that they're a suitable candidate
if they've had a history of strokes or heart attacks
then they may not be healthy enough to undergo ketamine therapy during this time
we also talked to them about risks and benefits
because certainly this is a treatment that can be quite safe when done correctly
it can have some potential risks and concerns and certainly abuse potential
So we talked through all of that with the patient
If everything is a green light will have the patient then come in later that week to receive their first infusion
Usually the patient is a little bit groggy or tired
are having real significant innovation and breakthrough in how we can treat these patients
it's brought a lot of that to the forefront
I think people that are interested in these types of therapies
it really is important that you speak with your medical team
and you do it in a supervised medical setting
I think so often people think that they can just order it online or get it from a friend in that that'll have the same effect
but it really is important to speak with your medical team to make sure that it's done correctly and safely

Underberg previewed its limited-edition Asbach Freiheitsbrand (freedom brandy) 1989 vintage and new herbal digestive Brasilberg at last month’s TFWA World Exhibition.
Created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, only 1,000 bottles of Asbach Freiheitsbrand are available worldwide.
The limited-edition bottle is presented in a wooden gift box, with an original piece of the Berlin Wall.
Asbach Freiheitsbrand was officially launched on 9 November, 25 years to the day since the Berlin Wall came down. Underberg International Marketing Director Andrea Baumgartner said the company plans to introduce the brandy to German airports and is currently in talks with Heinemann.
She added that Asbach Freiheitsbrand has the potential to be sold in Chinese duty free as the premium bottle design and box is expected to appeal to Chinese consumers.
Brasilberg, a miniature herbal digestive, was also unveiled at the TFWA World Exhibition.
The story behind Brasilberg began in 1932 when Dr Paul Underberg, grandson of Underberg Founder Hubert Underberg, emigrated to Brazil. There, Dr Paul began the production of his version of Underberg, Underberg do Brasil.
During World War II, the production of Underberg could no longer continue in either Germany or Brazil. After the war ended, Dr Paul’s brother Emil said that the family in Rheinberg would resend the herbs so that Dr Paul could restart production of Underberg in Brazil. Dr Paul refused, explaining that he had his own recipe; this resulted in a fight among the family.
When Paul married, he moved the recipe rights – which were owned by the family in Rheinberg – to his wife Anna. Following Dr Paul’s death in 1959, there was a continuing feud between his wife and the family until 2005, when the family bought back the production rights.
Brasilberg da Casa Underberg do Brasil, as it is known today, was launched in February 2014 in time for the World Cup this summer in Brazil. Initially promoted by word of mouth, it was first introduced in Germany, followed by Denmark and Switzerland.

2023 11:15 p.m.The tort claim centers on Aron Christensen’s puppy
and the attorney’s belief that the sheriff’s office “maliciously damaged” the dog’s body.Aron Christensen pictured in an undated photo
Christensen's family's lawsuit centers on a theory that Lewis County tampered with evidence in his death investigation
Family members of a hiker slain under suspicious circumstances in Lewis County have filed a legal claim against the county
stating their intent to seek roughly $20 million in damages
Attorneys representing Aron Christensen’s estate claim the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office “sabotaged” the investigation into his and his 4-month-old puppy’s deaths in August 2022 on a hiking trail south of Packwood
was traveling on Friday and did not provide a statement
His office released a copy of the tort claim
a filing that often proceeds a formal lawsuit
The tort claim centers on Christensen’s puppy
and the attorney’s belief that the sheriff’s office “maliciously damaged” the young Australian cattle dog’s body to tamper with the case
two Lewis County Coroner’s Office staffers
a contracted forensic pathologist and two veterinarians
Representatives with Lewis County could not be reached on Friday
Christensen died of a gunshot wound on Aug
19 while on a camping trip with his dog and friends at Walupt Lake Campground
The 49-year-old told friends he and his dog would go on a solo hike and return the next morning
and a 17-year-old companion began hiking in roughly the same area and reportedly heard growling
Asbach said he fired one shot from a 9-millimeter pistol
He later told investigators he found Christensen and Buzzo dead
Christensen's family's lawsuit centers on a theory that Lewis County tampered with the puppy's body during the death investigation
Forensic experts have not identified whether a single bullet killed both Christensen and his dog
Canine DNA did appear on the bullet recovered from Christensen’s chest
but medical experts have suggested multiple possibilities
“The chances of Buzzo’s DNA being on the outside of Aron’s shirt is pretty likely,” said Lewis County Coroner Warren McLeod in a recent interview
McLeod also noted that search-and-rescue teams carried Christensen’s and Buzzo’s bodies wrapped in the same tarp
In the wake of the shooting, Christensen’s family and some Lewis County residents have raised questions about how effectively the case was investigated. A detective also told Christensen’s family that Asbach was a “good kid with a good family,” according to The Oregonian/OregonLive
they questioned why the responding deputy reported that Christensen died from a puncture wound by a stick and then diverted detectives who had been en route to the scene
Lewis County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer announced he would not charge Asbach with any crimes
Since then, multiple medical professionals have reported dueling findings while examining Christensen’s puppy. The dispute was first reported by The Chronicle newspaper
Brandy Fay conducted a necropsy on the puppy
She reported a wound that was more consistent with a stabbing than a gunshot
the sheriff’s office commissioned a second necropsy that reported an exit wound from a gunshot
a board member of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association
Christensen’s family reportedly asked Fay to take one last look at Buzzo
She said she found a broken rib that was not present earlier
Fay left open the possibility the second wound was made after Buzzo had already died

The limited edition on two coloured (blue and yellow) double-vinyl comes in a deluxe gatefold sleeve

The latter is also Rummelsnuff’s first real a cappella song
For those readers unknown with Rummelsnuff
he is a German musician and lyricist and the son of a family of renowned musicians (Renate and Peter Baptist)
Roger Baptist began experimental work with old keyboards
Under the influence of the Leipzig band Die Art
which was mainly devoted to English-language music
In 1989 he joined the Dresden underground band Friends of the Italian Opera (FDIO) and
as a co-author of Jänz Dittschlag and RJKKHänsch
including on the record “Um Thron und Liebe” and the CD “Edle Einfalt Stille Größewere”
After the Friends of Italian Opera broke up in 1992
Baptist founded the EBM and NDH band Automatic Noir
After the decline of the project followed several years of abstinence from music
It was his contact with the Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard that made him create the figure of “Rummelsnuff” in 2004
The first album was released in March 2008 on Alfred Hilsberg’s label ZickZack Records
Christian Asbach likes to regard himself as oldschool european intellectual and fan of craftsmanship
Trained scholar in the fields of aesthetics and media history

Let's explore COVID-19's impact on psychiatric research..
shared how he feels COVID-19 impacted psychiatric research and drug development
"It really does have an incredible impact on drug development
especially when you think about how expensive clinical research is
I think your average clinician doesn't realize how difficult and how high stakes they are," said Asbach
there are almost 100 clinical trials going on—some of which are still recruiting from the COVID era
AI and technology may have transformative changes in this field of research though
"I'm hopeful that COVID will actually be an opportunity for us to look back 10 to 15 years from now and say
that's was when we realized we have to innovate and get better at this."
Background/Info: Five years have passed since the last Rummelsnuff-album
which was already featuring Christian Asbach
The new work reveals sixteen cuts of pure fun
Content: Rummelsnuff remains the weirdest and most surprising formation from this underground scene
The success story of the band is 99% spread over homeland Germany and that’s mainly because of the German vocals
It remains a challenge defining the sound of this formation
which rather sounds as the offspring between Electronics
One of the songs features the chorus sung in French
the pronunciation of some words being too fun to be true
+ + + : Rummelsnuff remains a challenge
There’s only one Rummelsnuff and it’s an antidote to Dark-Electronics
Rummelsnuff makes people happy and gets them into dance; it’s music for tough sailors with a sugar heart
The song “Berlinverbot” is my personal favorite; sounding a bit more Electro-like and into Pop
– – – : It remains a mystery to me why Rummelsnuff is so much appreciated and recognized in Germany
but it’s remains fun and that’s what people need today
Conclusion: If you feel depressed and you can’t laugh anymore
try Rummelsnuff; better than all antidepressants

Aron Christensen’s family say the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department bungled an investigation after he was shot dead with Buzzo
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
The family of a hiker who was discovered dead next to his dog on a remote trail in Washington state have launched a $20m lawsuit alleging sheriffs “sabotaged” a criminal investigation into his death
Portland musician Aron Christensen
was camping with friends at Walupt Lake in Lewis County when he went on a solo hike with his four month-old Australian Cattle Dog Buzzo on 19 August last year
Christensen’s body was discovered lying next to the dead puppy on a trail in the Cascade Mountains the next day by a pair of hikers
His brother Corey Christensen told The Chronicle that sheriffs initially claimed he had died of a heart attack from laced marijuana and fallen onto a stick
autopsies appeared to show both Christensen and Buzzo had died from gunshot wounds
A bullet recovered from Christensen’s chest showed traces of canine DNA
suggesting they may have died from a single shot
A 19-year-old, named by The Chronicle as Ethan Asbach
later told investigators he had been hiking in the area with a 17-year-old companion when he fired a single shot from his father’s 9mm pistol
Mr Asbach told authorities he came across Christensen and Buzzo’s bodies
He claimed he continued walking and became lost
In a transcript of his phone call with law enforcement obtained by the Wall Street Journal
he admitted he hadn’t called 911 when he got back to cellphone range because he was worried about getting into trouble
He said he had fired at a wild animal which was threatening him
The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office referred manslaughter and animal cruelty charges to prosecutors
who announced in April they were declining to charge Mr Asbach
veterinarians who examined Buzzo have offered conflicting reports about his cause of death
An initial autopsy conducted by local veterinarian Brandy Fay claimed the dog’s injuries were more consistent with a stabbing than gunshot wounds
a second necropsy commissioned by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office found an exit wound from a gunshot
When the Christensen family requested Dr Fay examine Buzzo a second time
she reportedly found a broken rib that was not present during her earlier necroposy
suggesting the dog’s body had been tampered with
The first deputy to reach the bodies had determined there was no sign of suspicious activity
“It is difficult to tell if it was from a bullet or from a tree limb or stick that may have protruded into his body,” deputy Andrew Scrivner wrote
in a report viewed by the Wall Street Journal
He said he spent 25 minutes searching shell casings
before diverting detectives who were on their way to the crime scene
Deputy Scrivner carried Christensen’s body down the mountain with help from other campers
Ethan Asbach’s father contacted authorities to say his son had accidentally shot Christensen after being approached by what he thought was a wild animal
Sheriff Rob Snaza told The Chronicle that the deputy who responded to the shooting had made a mistake in not identifying the cause of death as a gunshot
Corey Christensen, who recently filed a $20m lawsuit against the sheriff’s department, told the Wall Street Journal his attempts to find answers about his brother’s death had been infuriating
“I thought I was going crazy for a while,” he told the paper
“But there’s a difference between you being crazy and it driving you crazy.”
The family has set up a GoFundme page to cover legal fees as they continue to search for answers about Christensen’s death.
Mr Christensen’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment by The Independent.

THOMSON - Ray Blessing has been a firefighter in Martinez for 18 years
But when he started taking fire science classes at Augusta Tech a few months ago
I've struggled," the Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue captain said
We're used to just going in and putting the fire out
Firefighters from several Augusta-area departments are already enrolled in the school's fire science program
the head of the school's Fire Science Technology Department
people participating in this aspect of our program are already working in field or possibly a related safety field," he said
"These are persons with an eye towards the future
This is the future of the fire service in America
and many professional firefighters are recognizing the importance of advanced education."
students do much of their classwork online
"We operate nearly entirely in the virtual world," Mr
"But there are a few classes that require some hands-on or other outside
students spent part of a recent Saturday learning how to investigate a suspicious fire at an abandoned house in McDuffie County
a room at a hotel - called "No-tel" - had been torched
and the students had to figure out which character did it
everything counts," said Elizabeth Hankins
a volunteer with Govan Fire Department in Bamberg County for eight years and with Barnwell City Fire Department for eight months
She hopes the degree she's working toward will help her eventually move to the administrative side
Augusta firefighter Miranda Turner said the arson class has already brought her new perspective
"It opens my eyes for things I should be looking for
but I wasn't necessarily looking for in the past when we get a call," she said
While some students are working toward a degree in the program
others are working toward achieving the National Fire Association's National Professional Qualification Firefighter 1 level
The Firefighter 1 curriculum is spread over 20 weeks
mainly at night and on Saturdays - allowing firefighters to balance regular jobs with school
Thomson Fire Chief Rick Sewell said the class seems to be working well and could prove very beneficial in the future
"The thing that I look forward to is the fact that
in the future it would create us a pool of potential applicants to maybe choose from when we have an opening," Chief Sewell said
having to send them to school and train them
I'm hoping that eventually these classes will produce a pool that we can just say
'Hey we've got an opening.' And we'll get some applicants for that."
Asbach said he's grateful for the support he has received from area fire departments
"Without the support of the fire department in Thomson
it would have been impossible to offer this learning experience to my students," he said
adding that Thomson fire officials helped with the mock arson and McDuffie fire officials set up a January practice fire for students
WASHINGTON STATE: The devastated family of a 49-year-old hiker
have sued Lewis County in a last-ditch effort to ascertain the cause of his death after examiners found a bullet in his body
Aron Christensen and his four-month-old Australian Shepherd puppy
were found dead at around 4 pm on August 20
on a trail three to four miles away from Walupt Lake on a trail near Randle
Christensen had been camping around the trail with his friends till August 19 when he decided to ditch the group to go on a 13-mile solo hike with his dog
They left at about 9.30 am with the intention of coming back for supper the following day
But no one heard or saw Christensen after that solo hike
The sole account of what would have happened to the hiker was provided by a 19-year-old boy
who subsequently admitted to firing a shot after hearing some suspicious noises while hiking with his unnamed 17-year-old girlfriend
Scrivner decided there was no suspicious cause of death
so told dispatchers to inform detectives they weren't needed
The Forest Service then assisted in removing Christensen's body off the route
Christensen's brother Corey recently claimed that an officer indicated his sibling could have had a heart attack brought on by ''laced marijuana."
Deputies continued their investigation on August 21 when Asbach’s father Michael came forward to notify officials about the shooting
Scrivner eventually made contact with Ethan and stated in his report that he was acting nervously and seemed upset
Corey didn't learn about the alternate narrative regarding Asbach and the 9mm firearm until two weeks after his brother’s death
''It's a huge burden for the Christensen family
but no one feels sympathy for Ethan and the things he had to go through
There was never ever ill intent out of that kid," Michael told Wall Street Journal
A ray of clarification in Christensen and Buzzo's death finally came after a slew of repeated autopsies
the forensic pathologist who performed Christensen's autopsy
subsequently admitted to prosecutors that she believed the investigator wanted her autopsy report to support a certain theory
when her autopsy was finally released in October
it listed Christensen's cause of death as a ''gunshot wound'' and classified it as a ''homicide." Christensen would have been alive when the gunshot impacted
adding that there was evidence of a heart attack within 12 hours of his passing
Local veterinarian Brandy Fay also examined Buzzo’s body and determined that he died after being stabbed
She told the Journal that she was shocked to learn of Asbach's story because there was no sign of a gunshot wound
Prosecutors and sheriff's deputies then asked another veterinarian in the Portland area
for a second opinion after Fay examined the dog
Otteman reportedly found an exit wound on Buzzo's right side
Another key difference in their findings was a broken rib in Buzzo's torso
She pointed out that there was no blood surrounding the exit incision
indicating that it had been made after the dog had died
even though the Lewis County sheriff's office had suggested charges of manslaughter and animal cruelty against Asbach
local prosecutors announced earlier this year that they would not press the accusations against the teen
''The responding deputy made the obvious error when indicating detectives were not needed to respond to the report of a gunshot victim,'' the county's top prosecutor
wrote in a letter to the sheriff's department
''The old adage of 'investigate it like it's a homicide until it isn't' was not followed here
We can only speculate about what might have been
This Office must base its decision on the evidence we have," he continued
Christensen's family filed a $20 million lawsuit against the county
alleging that county officials botched the investigation into Aron's death and tampered with Buzzo
The family claims the Lewis County Sheriff's Office ''maliciously damaged the estate's property
in order to sabotage a criminal investigation."
