many companies are currently pushing through long-planned mass redundancies and site closures in addition to VW Baunatal and Opel/Stellantis this particularly affects the automotive suppliers Schaeffler and Continental The latest IG Metall contract in the metal and electrical industries which guarantees two years of “industrial peace,” has given management the green light Continental plans to close its sites in Schwalbach am Taunus and Wetzlar by the end of 2025 Some of the workforce there are to move to Frankfurt or Babenhausen with 630 jobs also being destroyed at the Frankfurt site One hundred and ten jobs are also to be cut in Babenhausen Continental is cutting 1,200 of the remaining 8,000 jobs in the region and 1,100 workers are to be forced to relocate Continental plans to cut 7,150 jobs worldwide in order to reduce personnel costs by €400 million annually an important manufacturer of drive technology has also announced job cuts in Schwalbach am Taunus Schaeffler only took over Vitesco Technologies Group AG the automotive supplier spun off from Continental Schaeffler announced 139 job cuts at Vitesco in Schwalbach The company plans to cut 3,700 jobs across Europe wants to “utilise synergies” and “increase the savings potential to €290 million per year” over five years—in other words: lay off employees There is great anger and a willingness to fight among those impacted A faint reflection of this can even occasionally be seen in the local press a young Continental worker from Wetzlar told Hessenschau regional news programme “All our plans for the future have been turned upside down now have a child and wanted to build a house Another called it a “slap in the face,” adding “It’s sad that this is coming to an end.” Employees in administration research and development have been particularly hard hit In the protests and warning strikes of recent weeks and months, the workforce has been almost totally united. There can be no doubt about their determination to fight. However, IG Metall is refusing to lead the necessary fight. It made this clear with its latest wage agreement where it committed to preventing industrial action at least until the early elections in February has been a deputy chairwoman on Continental’s Supervisory Board for years at an annual salary of €270,000 With its officials in the pay of management IG Metall blocked any resistance three and a half years ago when Continental destroyed over 10,000 jobs and flattened its large Aachen plant Many still remember the dispute at Continental in Karben and other branches in Hesse At no point did IG Metall organise serious industrial action uniting workers at all locations it helped ensure the closure of one location after another Karben will also be finally wound up next year Workers must draw definite conclusions from this experience independent rank-and-file action committees to overcome the division fostered by IG Metall between sites groups and sectors and unite all employees The ultimate goal must be to take control of such important global production companies themselves to put them at the service of society and to expropriate their current owners These owners and their managers are waging a ruthless class war The so-called “social partnership” has turned into a one-way street: The trade union ensures that any resistance is nipped in the bud The attacks on jobs and wages are part of a global capitalist offensive and a new wave of trade war paving the way for armed conflict The captains of industry and shareholders belong to a class of the super-rich This applies above all to Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler and her son Georg Schaeffler who are in 27th place on the list of the 500 richest Germans The Schaeffler family is also the main shareholder of Continental AG and recently acquired its spun-off automotive division Vitesco The management boards of both companies were paid bonuses totalling millions Continental shareholders decided to pay out around €440 million in dividends 46 percent—more than €200 million euros—will once again end up in the Schaeffler family’s bank account Both Continental and Schaeffler owe the origins of their wealth to crimes committed under Nazi rule culminating in the Second World War The origins of the Schaeffler fortune also goes back to the Nazi era which was officially founded in Herzogenaurach in 1940 actually had a Jewish predecessor: the “Davistan Krimmer Plüsch und Teppichfabriken AG” owned by the Frank family which was quickly renamed “Wilhelm Schaeffler AG,” also produced armaments for the Wehrmacht during the war and profited from the proximity of its owners the direct ancestors of the current owners the struggle in defence of jobs and wages is once again inextricably linked to the fight against war and military rearmament It must be waged internationally and on a socialist basis IG Metall stands on the other side in this struggle We therefore call on all Continental and Schaeffler employees: Take part in the formation of rank-and-file action committees Get in touch via Whatsapp message at +491633378340 or fill out the form below June 2 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rains have caused catastrophic flooding in southern Germany prompting the evacuation of over 600 people from their homes Continuous rainfall over several days has caused water levels to rise in several rivers in Germany leading to widespread flooding in coastal cities and towns Water levels in many areas have reached their highest levels in a century The two southern German states of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg are the hardest hit In our press the activities of its Wetzlar and Schwalbach sites in Frankfurt and Babenhausen in the future The company had already announced its efforts to bundle the sector’s business activities in the Rhine-Main region on February 14 They are part of Continental's plan to increase the competitiveness of the Automotive sector which Continental is consistently implementing The consolidation is expected to take place gradually and to be completed by the end of 2025 The locations in Wetzlar and Schwalbach that are no longer in use are to be sold The aim is to continue to enable employment at the sites shortening development times and reducing costs through better utilization of the existing infrastructure the headquarters of the Automotive sector in Frankfurt will be strengthened A competence center for future technologies such as high-performance computing is being built there strengthening cooperation in research and development," explains Philipp von Hirschheydt, member of the executive board and head of Automotive we will make even better use of our strengths in the field of vehicle software and architecture at the competence center in Frankfurt and thus bring our technologies and solutions to market maturity more quickly." The measures to increase competitiveness are expected to have an impact on a total of around 2,300 jobs in the Continental Automotive sector in the Rhine-Main region around 1200 jobs are to be cut and around 1100 are to be relocated to the sites in Frankfurt and Babenhausen Continental's Automotive sector currently employs around 8,000 people in the Rhine-Main region "We will work closely with our social partners to find good and fair solutions for the planned changes," said von Hirschheydt.  Automotive is taking the next step in the organizational spin-off of the User Experience business area and is bundling the research and business activities of the area from the Rhine-Main region at the Babenhausen site Development projects in the User Experience business area will be continued from Babenhausen in the future Activities unrelated to the User Experience business area will be transferred from Babenhausen to Frankfurt The consolidation of the sites in the Rhine-Main region is part of the already announced bundling of the research and development network with a total of 82 locations worldwide and the announced streamlining of the administrative structures The aim is to sustainably strengthen competitiveness through more efficient processes closer cooperation and a focus on particularly promising growth areas.  The Automotive business sector plans to reduce the share of research and development expenditure (R&D ratio) to less than 10 percent of sales in 2028 Despite the reduction in the R&D ratio absolute expenditure on research and development can increase based on the expected sales growth in the medium term By streamlining its administrative structures worldwide the Automotive sector intends to reduce costs by EUR 400 million per year The full scope is to be achieved from 2025 I recently learned about a heartwarming friendship that has endured through time and distance for five decades Not entirely enamored with living in a one-room apartment in the Bachelor Officer Quarters he received special permission from his commanding officer to live off-base in a local home “(It was) my first time overseas,” he said “I wanted to live with a German family I figured that would be a way to explore something different that I had never experienced.” He found a basement apartment in the home of Anna Schramm who lived in the village with her 9-year-old son He became very good friends with Anna’s older son “He was like a little brother to me,” Dennis said Dennis stayed for two years at Anna’s house before heading back to Rochester But he never lost touch with the German family with whom he had become so close Anna and Ralf were among the guests and Axel was best man When they traveled to Europe the following summer And in 1999 Dennis and two of his sons attended Ralf’s wedding in Babenhausen 50 years after Dennis Bielewicz first entered that village home as a young soldier Dennis and Sheryl have been hosting teenagers Tim and Leo Guinet in their Ontario home are Ralf’s sons — grandsons of Dennis’ one-time landlady The visit was first proposed last September when Dennis and Sheryl were visiting the little German town and their mother wanted them to also learn English ‘Why don’t you send them to America?’” Sheryl said It took a little while for the boys to warm up to the idea “I was a little scared because we didn't know anything about the American culture just a little bit (from) school,” Leo said “we wanted to learn more about the country and get to know Dennis and Sheryl better than we have known them before.” The Bielewiczes have been enthusiastic tour guides filling the days with activities and sightseeing The boys were especially impressed by Niagara Falls and have been surprised by how sweet American food is They like “anything grilled,” Dennis said Tim and Leo will be heading home Friday July 21 but the end of their visit will not mean the end of the international friendship The Bielewiczes would love to host the boys’ younger brother Emil someday “We hope this connection is going to continue,” Sheryl said “We feel that Americans need to do our part to encourage peace and friendships among varying countries and this is a way Dennis can give back for the sincere kindness that was shown to him in his youth.” Pittsford Family Movie NightsPittsford's Family Outdoor Movie Nights begin Thursday with the presentation of Trolls inflatable screen at Sutherland High School I’ll highlight a different east-side special event every week this summer. But I was a….musician for the US Army….I heard the news while driving to choir rehearsal a the International Chapel on base it takes all kind of people to make an army I was an Air Force TACP assigned to the Air Liaison Office of an armored brigade in Germany was as happy and amazed as any other German But I don’t really remember much about that day certainly not with the clarity I remember while sleeping on his B-29 and had to go thru the full rabies shot program… While I still consider the unification to have been premature economics-wise @OzarkHillbilly: This sounds like a great idea for a Tumblr I’m getting old enough that I forget how unique some of the things I now consider mundane are in the real world at a time when the only way that people expected the Iron Curtain to ‘fall’ the Blue Ridge Mountains an hour south of Chattanooga is the hauntingly beautiful ruins of a stately 16-bedroom manor home built in the 1840s by an Englishman Barnsley came to America in 1824 and soon amassed a fortune in the cotton and shipping trades He married a Southern belle and set out to build her a manor house keeping in with her upbringing — and his unbridled success The cotton and the most well known in Germany strange phenomena began occurring in the office of lawyer Sigmund Adam Telephones would ring with no one at the other end and desk drawers would open without being touched A German paper installed equipment to monitor the phones and in 3 month they recorded over 600 calls to the speaking clock – despite the fact that all of the telephones were unplugged 46 calls were recorded – a rate that seemed impossible given the mechanical dialing system in place all light bulbs in the building went out with a huge bang After installing cameras and voice recorders investigators were able to discover that the events only took place when 19-year-old Annemarie Schneider (a recently employed secretary) was present It was claimed that a suspended light would swing violently when Ms Schneider walked beneath it and the lights would flicker whenever she walked in to the office When Schneider went on holiday the events stopped Schneider was fired and the problems stopped for good Pictured above is Schneider beneath the lights that were seen to swing One house in one street in Bélmez de la Moraleda Spain has recently become very famous thanks to eerie faces that have been appearing in the floor Street Real 5 has become a popular attraction for ghost tourists as the faces appear frequently and can be easily photographed The appearances in Bélmez began on August 23 1971 when María Gómez Cámara saw a face appear on her cement kitchen floor Her husband took a pickaxe and destroyed the face Connecticut is not just the most haunted cemetery in Connecticut it is considered by many to be the most haunted cemetery in the United States The most famous ghost there is the White Lady Numerous photographs have been taken of her and she has even been caught on film She has long dark hair and wears a bonnet and nightgown She frequently appears in the roadway along route 59 and sometimes route 111 where she is often “hit” by oncoming vehicles a fireman was driving along the road when he hit the lady – he heard a thud and a dent was left in his vehicle As the woman appeared in front of his car he also saw a farmer with a straw hat sitting beside him in the car The cemetery is locked at night and regularly patrolled by the police The image above is one of many that can be found on the Internet England that is believed to be the most haunted village in England In addition to the 12 (some say 13 or 14) ghosts in Pluckley the village is also famous for the television program The Darling Buds of May which was filmed there the most spectacular are the ghostly highwayman and coach and horses seen near the town hall the ghost of a gypsy woman burned to death in her sleep The Screaming Woods is an area just outside the town haunted by the ghosts of many people who were lost there Their screams can be heard coming from inside the forest at night This residential area of London best known for the song A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square is also home to the most haunted house in London Number 50 Berkeley Square is home to a large number of ghosts the earliest of which is that of a young girl murdered in the 1700s by a sadistic servant She is frequently seen on the top floor sobbing and wringing her hands in despair Another woman trying to escape her uncle fell from a window – her ghost is often seen hanging from a windowsill the neighbors heard numerous screams and moans coming from the house Years later the house was occupied by a Mr who locked his insane brother in a room on the top floor He fed the insane man through a special opening in the door This is the room that is supposed to be central to the haunting The house is currently home to a bookstore – strange occurrences have been noted by all of the staff of the shop The top floor is kept locked at all times and no one is allowed to enter it This article is licensed under the GFDL because it contains quotations from the Wikipedia articles cited above As part of measures outlined in February on 26 March 2024 Continental announced the planned closure of its Wetzlar and Schwalbach sites in Germany Both belong to the company’s non-tyre Automotive group sector The company will transfer the activities currently conducted at both sites to other Continental Automotive plants in Germany relocating around 1,100 jobs to its facilities in Frankfurt and Babenhausen Continental will cut a further 1,200 or so jobs Following the anticipated conclusion of this process by the end of 2025 Continental will sell the Wetzlar and Schwalbach sites Continental describes these measures as a merger of the sites and says that by doing so the Automotive group sector is “leveraging synergies shortening development times and reducing costs through better utilisation of the
