Tudor rider breaks Bora-Hansgrohe's dominance in Bad Dürrheim
Marco Brenner (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) won the elite men’s road race at the German Championships in Bad Dürrheim after dropping breakaway companion Florian Lipowtiz (Bora-Hansgrohe) on the final climb with 7km remaining
The pair were part of a five-man move that forged clear after just 20km of racing
Brenner and Lipowitz rid themselves of their fellow escapees with 35km remaining
and they duelled on the final lap of the course
Lipowitz was riding his first race since his promising Grand Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia was cut short by illness
while Kim Heiduk (Ineos) claimed bronze at 2:35
just ahead of Ben Zwiehoff (Bora-Hansgrohe)
the remaining member of the decisive early break
with the next chasing group coming in almost five minutes down
Heiduk and Teutenberg quickly established a lead of two minutes in the break
Bora-Hansgrohe were content to control affairs in the peloton
Former champion Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates) was active in trying to bridge across
but he was unable to make much leeway with Bora-Hansgrohe marking him tightly
and it was apparent from a long way out that the break would go the distance
Brenner looked the strongman in the early move
and he marked Lipowitz’s attack with 35km to go before dropping the Bora man in the run-in
the 21-year-old’s victory here was another indication of his considerable potential

UAE Team Emirates rider beats Max Scachmann and Miguel Heidemann in Bad Dürrheim
Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates) confirmed he was in top Tour de France form by going back-to-back at the elite men’s German national time trial championships just over a week ahead of the Grand Départ
The UAE rouleur beat two-time German road race champion Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) to the title in Bad Dürrheim in a time of 36:51
Schachmann set a time 17 seconds slower with Miguel Heidemann (Felt Felbermayr) taking the bronze with a time of 37:16
Politt dominated the 30.6km course as he led at all three of the time checks
only losing time from T2 to the finish due to the more hilly terrain in the final 5km suiting Schachmann’s characteristics better
The trio on the podium were the exact same as the 2023 race
except Heidemann and Schachmann swapped finishing positions
powerful German will be at the services of Tadej Pogačar throughout the three weeks
with his work as a rouleur to control the breakaways and pace on the flat vital for the Slovenian’s Giro-Tour double attempt

German Tour de France winner maintains his positive outlook with new Black Forest installation
Jan Ullrich is to open his own cycling museum this Friday
in his home Black Forest region of Germany
The Jan Ullrich Cycling Museum's tagline – 'Wo täglich neue kraft wachsen' (where new strength grows every day)
suggests a step forward for the 50-year-old
as he opens the new project in Bad Durrheim
But setting up a museum requires a lot of time and energy and is certainly not easy.”
Ullrich also borrowed the celeste colour-matched helmet and gloves he wore that day to display among his own installations
“That bike is really a piece of cycling history,” said Ulrich
“It's fantastic that we can borrow it and yes
Koers curator Thomas Ameye explained how the bike came to be at Koers in the first place: “The bicycle has been one of the masterpieces in our collection for more than 15 years,”
"It ended up here through Freddy Maertens and former Dutch cyclist Jacques Hanegraaf
who were responsible for public relations for Team Telekom [another of Ullrich's teams]."
He said the loan was the beginning of a "wonderful collaboration" and revealed that in return
Ullrich was loaning Koers one of his 1997 yellow jerseys
Ullrich embarked on another tour – this time of the museum – and said he had picked up a few ideas for his own

Weldon said that Sowieja’s training in the United States is in jeopardy due to his injury
Sowieja said he did not feel well enough yet to endure a day of flying to get back to his home in Bad Dürrheim in southern Germany
(the pain is) going through the leg,” Sowieja said
“(The pain) is getting stronger all the time.”
Weldon said that Sowieja’s story should reach drivers around Savannah who need to be more cognizant of sharing the road with cyclists
“You don’t try to go around a bike; you just wait patiently,” Weldon said
Sowieja added that he has experienced the issue of drivers lacking caution around cyclists in several cities throughout his extensive international training

They were all part of a selection of a dozen or so riders that had formed on the front of the race with 70km or so remaining
it was immediately apparent that they would fight it out for the medals

Ethan Hayter finished off a superb team performance from the INEOS Grenadiers to claim victory at the British National Championship road race.Hayter put in a well-judged ride to add a first road race gold to a pair of time trial national titles
The Brit had pushed clear on the roads around Saltburn
as part of a three-man group that went away in the second half of the race. After fending off attacks from Max Walker (Astana Development)
Hayter was able to out-kick Lewis Askey (Groupama-FDJ) on the final climb to win solo.Connor Swift was part of a chasing group
and on the final lap the Yorkshireman pushed clear in a bid to bridge across
with Swift eventually finishing fourth.Josh Tarling came home seventh to make it three Grenadiers in the top 10
while Ben Swift was also incredibly active during a hard-fought race.Reaction- Ethan Hayter
It’s been quite a hard period – I’ve not actually won a race since I broke my collarbone for the second time last year
“There were about a hundred different groups and attacks
and that was the really hard part of the race
You can’t be in every move yourself but one of us was always there
Then in the second half of the race I think I was always on the front foot and felt quite good
I just knew I had to be patient and pick and choose the times to go as everyone was looking at me a bit
“One of the motorbikes with a chalkboard told me Connor Swift was coming across
You don’t really want to use the other guys like that sometimes but that’s bike racing and I had to do it
Connor trying to come across gave me that extra bit.”

The 17-year-old made his first appearance and played the full 90 minutes for England U19s in their 2-0 win over Italy on Thursday
But with coach Ian Foster shuffling his pack in his final friendly ahead of November’s U19 EURO ‘qualifying’ round
Baptiste began Monday’s game in Bad Durrheim on the bench
And while the first half passed by without much incident
Germany made a blistering start to the second when Armindo Sieb rifled home an overhead kick on the hour mark after England had failed to clear their lines from a corner
Dane Scarlett responded for England just three minutes later
with a poacher’s finish at the near post after some fine work down the left wing
And it was with exactly 20 minutes remaining that Baptiste entered the field of play wearing the No16 shirt
replacing fellow centre-back Reece Welch of Everton
Deployed on the right-hand side of a back three
the West Ham United defender subsequently played his part in a strong defensive effort as the hosts knocked on the door in search of a winning goal
but struggled to create anything substantial
with a combined total of 110 minutes under his belt for Foster’s side
Baptiste will feel confident he has done enough to impress his coach ahead of England’s first UEFA 2022 U19 EURO qualifiers later this year
