After a week of fruitful discussions involving senior figures of European and international particle physics, convergence was achieved on recommendations that will guide the future of the field. The drafting session marks a key stage of the strategy update process. The attendees of the Bad Honnef drafting session successfully carried out their ambitious task of identifying a set of priorities and recommendations. They built on the impressive progress made since the last update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, in 2013, and the rich input received from the entire particle physics community in the current update process. The next step in this process will be to submit the document outlining the recommendations to the CERN Council. It will be discussed by the Council in March and submitted for final approval at an extraordinary Council Session on 25 May, in Budapest, Hungary. Once approved, it can be made public. But farmers have never been given their fair share of the revenueImage: DANIEL MUNOZ/AFPAdvertisementOliver Coppeneur, a chocolate maker from Bad Honnef in Germany, has been in the business since the 1990s he's struggling due to rising prices for a key ingredient of his treats: cocoa he had to raise the prices of his chocolates like many other chocolatiers across the world.   Coppeneur told DW that the current surge in cocoa prices will make "chocolate products equally costly," which could eventually result in a "significant decrease in volume" on the market he's coping without laying off parts of his workforce and wants to keep prices for his chocolates stable.  About 65% of the world's cocoa beans come from four West African countries — Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon.   At the heart of the current spike in cocoa prices is a major shortage of cocoa beans A catastrophic 2024 harvest hit plantations all over West Africa It was caused by the so-called cocoa swollen shoot virus (CSSV) which spreads from tree to tree and can reduce crop yields by 50% in just two years A report by the International Cocoa Organization showed that 81% of plantations in Ghana — the world's second-largest cocoa producer after Ivory Coast — is infected with CSSV As the disease is also spreading in the Ivory Coast about 60% of the world's cocoa production is affected Moreover, US media nonprofit organisation Climate Central has reported that "climate change is causing hotter temperatures to become more frequent" in places such as Ivory Coast New Jersey-based science outlet shows that temperatures above 32°C (90°F) could reduce the quality and quantity of harvests which is why excessive heat would adversely affect major cocoa-growing regions Additionally, the so-called El Nino weather phenomenon led to a wetter rainy season than normal in Western Africa last year news agency Bloomberg has reported that "at least a dozen family-owned chocolatiers have closed down across Europe" in 2024 Hussel and Eilles filed for bankruptcy protection in 2024.  the cocoa shortage is also being directly felt by European consumers with chocolate prices rising by 35% since 2020.   But Friedel Hütz-Adams, a researcher at the SÜDWIND Institute in Bonn said European chocolate manufacturers have "generally been able to pass on rising cocoa prices."  "Their stable profits last year indicate that at least the large companies have managed to cope with high prices .. and in some cases even managed to achieve higher profits than before," he told DW.   the creator of TheChocolateLife — an online community for "chocophiles & aspiring chocophiles" said in an email statement: "Chocolate has been a recession-proof food." He claims on the platform's website that  "people buy chocolate to make themselves happy." and said that current "relatively stable sales" are an indication that "customers are able to cope with the higher prices and continue to buy chocolate."  the majority of farmers in West Africa had "barely any resources to implement good agricultural practices," which led to a decline in crop yields per hectare Persistently low cocoa prices in previous years, he said, led to workers often not being paid and widespread child labor. "Massive human rights violations are commonplace and could decrease in the future due to higher prices," Hütz-Adams added.  Higher cocoa prices raise standard of living in CameroonTo view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Chocolatier Oliver Coppeneur also thinks that the price of cocoa has been so low over the decades that farmers haven't had the resources to boost their output. Like other industry experts, he warns that without investment in higher yields and crops that are resilient to climate change, cocoa price swings are inevitable in the future.  "The next generations [of farmers] have to ask themselves: 'Do we want to continue this job at all, do we want to continue working on the farm?,'" said Coppeneur, adding that if chocolate companies don't invest in cocoa farmers "we shouldn't be surprised if the next generation has none left." 53-year old Martin Brehm has been appointed General Manager of the MAXX by Steigenberger Bad Honnef with immediate effect. Now climate change is adding to the continent’s woes An impassable river could halt the flow of everything from fuel to chemicals as governments try to prevent the energy crisis from tipping the region into recession Snaking roughly 800 miles (1,288-kilometers) from Switzerland to the North Sea the Rhine is vital for deliveries and exports of heating oil “With the Rhine transport disrupted and alternatives such as rail and road looking increasingly expensive it will be difficult for Germany and Switzerland to build gasoil/diesel stocks before temperatures cool,” said Josh Folds a European oil analyst at consultants Facts Global Energy “This is especially true given the situation with Russian gasoil/diesel imports.” the water level at Kaub fell to its lowest since 2018 a year that saw widespread disruption for key industrial users It’s now a little over 60 centimeters and is forecast to drop to 47 centimeters on Saturday according to the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration A representative for Germany’s Federal Institute of Hydrology said in July that it becomes uneconomical for barges carrying commodities to sail past Kaub when the measured level drops to 40 centimeters or below The low levels are already disrupting trade flows limiting how much fuel barges can carry into inland Europe which uses the Rhine to import oil-based fuel is releasing stock from its strategic reserves Parts of inland Europe’s fuel supply are also being hampered by refinery outages in Germany is also releasing fuel from its inventories The low water is backdrop for a serious battle between the German junior and young riders  The national competition at Bad Honnef was the last one of a series of qualifiers for the 2001 European Championships Hardly any surprises arose in the Young Riders' division In both qualifier tests did the current Preis der Besten winner Nicole Giesen dominate with her Dutch bred gelding Slow Fox V (by Saros xx) Giesen is champion Jurgen Wirths Wirths rode to a third and second place in Bad Honnef She further strengthened her position as young rider in Germany by claiming a double victory in the Piaff Förderpreis Julia Katharina von Platen ensured the fourth position in the German team with her Hanoverian Mocca Last year this elegant young rider from Wietze won the silver team medal at the European Championships in Hickstead The DOKR committee selected the following riders as reserves for the team: Dorothea Rohde with Rapino Christian Ritter with Bernstein and Katja Weisbrod with Hazleton was faced with difficulties during the junior rider qualifiers a local rain storm descended upon the idyllic island causing the first junior riders' qualifying test to be scratched entirely This meant that the German junior riders only had one final test in order to qualify for their country's European championships' team Shooting Star Lena-Alexandra Torloxten dominated her division aboard the famous Oldenburger gelding Rio's Chalston Juliane Brunkhorst created a comfortable second place niche position aboard La Boom Dirk Viebrock and his Willy The Kid settled themselves in third position Three times team gold medallist at the European Pony Championships was luckily enough to have scored constantly throughout the season because her performance in Bad Honnef would not have been good enough to be selected for the team Kroncke messed up two important flying lead changes in her test and did the DOKR-committee find her previous performances convincing enough to select her as fourth member for the German Junior Riders' team Reserve combinations are Jessica and Benjamin Werndl with Nokturn and Duke and Isabell Kettner with Avandgard Piaff-Förderpreis: Sovereign Victory for Nadine Wirths The premiere of the Piaff-Förderpreis at Bad Honnef Dressage 2001 received enthusiastic reactions from the German dressage world The Piaff-Förderpreis is a special competition in which twelve riders under the age of 25 are selected to compete two tests an S-level test (PSG) and a special Grand Prix The German Equestrian Federation created this formula in order to stimulate rider to make the difficult transition from Prix St Georges to Grand Prix level won both the Prix St Georges and the special Grand Prix aboard her father's schoolmaster Souveran W Second place was covered by Cora Jacobs with Granat while the judges put Aachen citizen Jana Kun on Metternich third German team trainer Holger Schmezer was very pleased with the results of the first Piaff-Förderpreis the Piaff-Förderpreis in Bad Honnef was a huge success The participants had to ride a simpler version of the Grand Prix and did not have to compete against top combinations like Capellmann the Preis is interesting too as the class is limited to only 12 combinations and each ride is commented on afterwards by the judges," Schmezer explained Stalls for Rent at Durondeau Dressage in Peer, Belgium Exceptionally Well Located absolutely hits a nerve with the target group of teens and twens The hoodies are still pre-ordered," says Tim as he holds up one of the brightly coloured shorts "prototypes" these are also made entirely according to his design: With "Moi Demain" such as the special wash of the hoodies and "I also look to see if anything needs to be changed in the cut the quality of the material is important to him with which he will soon be able to dress the fans of "Moi Demain" from head to toe in the literal sense of the word: hip sports shoes good-humoured skateboarders or basketball players immediately come to mind Tim was twelve years old when his textile career began - with shirts for himself and his friends for which the enthusiastic skateboarder created motifs his mother Susanne had started studying design The design software interested the youngster and he worked his way into it designed motifs and printed T-shirts with skateboards and stuff The graduate of the Siebengebirgsgymnasium - Abitur class of 2018 - and now a Bachelor's graduate in business psychology owes the brand name "Moi Demain" to his school lessons "I guess I wasn't paying attention again and thought I heard my name," he recounts but "Aimé moi demain" that the teacher had said: "Love me tomorrow": The name for the future fashion label was born "At that time I started again," Tim reports First with ready-made shirts that he bought from manufacturers and for which he created the motifs on the computer He did the printing himself and at the same time got more and more involved in the business including all the "boring stuff" - boring stuff as it says on his website - like general terms and conditions Finding manufacturers was not easy: "I have written to many manufacturers Often they just ask for very large quantities too large for me." The young entrepreneur kept his eye on the ball and found producers in Turkey Tim had long since registered his business and had the brand name protected And he had become very familiar with the industry "I wish there was some kind of roadmap of what you have to think about taking entrepreneurial risks with savings like communion gifts for example in the ice cream parlour," says Tim Do textile manufacturers get paid for the "prototypes" He also proved his knoff-hoff when it came to shipping: in his search for custom-fit solutions "I ordered so many of them that my grandma got an enquiry from the tax office asking if she had set up a pizza service," Tim says and laughs He also produces smart promotional photos and videos "a great network has developed in the meantime" Even the models who also promote his designs on Instagram ("This is my business card") or Tiktok belong to his circle of friends Known how: "Some influencers got models for free.“ But a personal highlight was: when he visited sister Lisa during her Erasmus stay in Barcelona he met skateboarders in front of great scenery "I approached the guys and they immediately put on my hoodies "We just had a shoot for the shorts," Tim continues as he demonstrates the elaborate packaging of his models It's not least the family that lends a hand when it comes to this kind of work including a bachelor's thesis - on the subject of brands of course - the dream of his own fashion company has been gaining momentum for about half a year "Sold out" - sold out: That's what they're saying more and more often for his hip fashion I still live at home," Tim says and laughs again "Moi Demain" should continue to grow organically And where does he see himself and his company in ten years "Already that the brand will be big then." Maybe even with its own skateboards at some point "I'm in contact with a manufacturer in Canada So we can continue to be curious about "Moi Demain" made in Bad Honnef (Original text: Claudia Sülzen; Translation: Mareike Graepel) Historical view: The postcard shows the Titanic as it departs Southampton on April 10 for its maiden voyage and a sailor on the most modern passenger ship of the time sounds the alarm There is a collision with a 20-meter-high iceberg The sinking of the Titanic exactly 109 years ago still moves people today - twelve films alone have been made about this maritime disaster in which 1496 people lost their lives There are more than 3000 books about the maiden voyage of this ship of the British shipping company White Star Line Jens Ostrowski now contributes another exciting story about the luxury liner that sank 300 nautical miles southeast of Newfoundland The special feature: Under the title "The Titanic was their fate," the journalist from Dortmund writes of the 22 German passengers and crew members out of a total of 2208 in his book "There has not been much to read about them so far," says the author who lived for years in Bad Honnef and was buried in the Melaten Cemetery in his hometown of Cologne in 1972 Nourney was one of the 712 survivors of the disaster Alfred Nourney was one of the few German passengers reported on "but not particularly in depth." He therefore did extensive research watching television interviews with Nourney he also spoke with the daughter of Titanic passenger Nourney false information was taken provided without being asked - by journalists or even by eyewitnesses themselves," Ostrowski said it was told that Alfred Nourney and also the steward Alfred Theissinger had swum for their lives in the cold water They got into a lifeboat." But they can't be blamed for climbing into the boats as men hardly anyone believed the Titanic was sinking; so the boats were only half occupied The men had nothing to be ashamed of in their rescue." Jens Ostrowski writes in his exciting piece "In order not to look like a coward in public when so many women and children went down with the ocean liner Nourney invented an alternative story." Thus he told his Cologne friend Ernst Groll on a postcard a few days after the drama that he had swum for his life Ostrowski: "The laws of nature alone made that impossible The chances of survival in the ice-cold ocean at that time were a few minutes." Instead the twenty-year-old was in boat number seven the first to touch down on the ocean's surface but he still portrayed his rescue very dramatically in a full-page article in the Honnefer Volkszeitung in 1952 Nourney also described the moment when he entered the boat to the editor and later mayor of Bad Honnef Franz Josef Kayser: „The crowd is unstoppable Alfred Nourney also said 40 years after the disaster It's the death cries of more than 1,000 people They are struggling not to freeze to death in the freezing water Hundreds of hands would drag our boat into the watery grave." Whenever Alfred Nourney later spoke about the sinking of the Titanic he embellished his eyewitness accounts with details that did not exist Thus he had also reported in the HVZ about a spiral staircase over which he had climbed to reach the boat deck "That did not exist at all in the construction plans of the Titanic." Also the dance events on the evening of the sinking had not existed in such a way as presented by Nourney So he had a first-class cabin given to him on the very first day on board and traveled as Baron von Drachstedt in order to gain admission to higher social circles Alfred Nourney agreed to an interview with Süddeutscher Rundfunk even though he was "sick to death" of the Titanic affair On one condition: a television set as a reward but he came from a merchant family in Cologne His father died when Alfred was 16 years old and attended the Bad Godesberg Pädagogium a young lady was expecting a child from the now 20-year-old his mother sent him to live with relatives in America went beyond just voting for the NSDAP in the 1933 Reichstag election; he became a member at age 45 In 1938 he married for the second time and moved to Honnef He remained associated with the Eudenbach flying club until his death (Original text: Roswitha Oschmann/ Translation: Mareike Graepel) There are 2016 in St Paul's Church in Friesdorf the Jens Bleck initiative is looking for witnesses to the death of the 19-year-old student from Bad Godesberg Jens Bleck drowned in the Rhine on 9 November 2013 after going to a disco near the island of Grafenwerth The circumstances have not yet been resolved but his parents have always ruled out suicide or an accident The initiative is supporting the family in their search for the truth and hopes that new witnesses will come forward: If someone did not intervene at the time the statute of limitations has now expired "Take heart and get in touch if you saw or heard anything If you didn't say anything or help back then such omissions are time-barred," is the current appeal signed by Jan Maresch and Änne von Bülow from the Jens Bleck initiative The search for witnesses took place between obituaries on Saturday but even after ten years many people cannot and do not want to come to terms with this death The circumstances under which Jens Henrik Bleck died near the former "Rheinsubstanz" discotheque in Bad Honnef have still not been clarified Since the case with all its inconsistencies became public it has been suspected that organised crime from the rocker or drug milieu was behind it The initiative remembers the law student as a "wonderful young person" who was suddenly torn from life with the many people who followed his death with all those who repeatedly asked the investigating authorities for more intensive clarification in long lists of signatures and with the many who donated money to give to witnesses who could contribute to the clarification." the crime is so well documented and yet so little is known about it: "We believe that there are still witnesses who were in the discotheque or in front of it on the night of 8 to 9 November 2013 and observed Jens Bleck's desperate escape as he tried to flee his pursuers ran onto the bridge to Grafenwerth and fell into the Rhine from there.“ Hochwasser an Weihnachten in Bonn und der Region the Rhine had risen to a level of 6.70 metres from Wednesday to Thursday the water level had risen by more than one metre A few centimetres more were added overnight: on Monday morning the water level had already reached 6.70 metres There were no flood-related operations on Sunday according to a spokesperson from the Bonn fire brigade in response to a GA enquiry the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) was called out on Friday afternoon to secure a jetty in a dead arm of the Rhine The fire service alerted the THW at around 4.30 p.m which leads to a landing dock belonging to the Honnef water sports club had become unmoored and was floating on the water The 30 or so THW emergency workers used boats and a drone to investigate the jetty There was only one motorboat and a slightly larger motor yacht at the landing stage on Friday evening As there was a risk that parts of the jetty could come loose if the water flowed more strongly They did this with the help of a 26-tonne-mounted crane and an articulated truck which were then held in place by the crane The THW also fitted steel cables to trees to provide additional temporary support Helbrecht went on to explain that the water sports club would have to decide in future what to do with the structure this will only be possible when the Rhine level drops tram number 66 from Oberdollendorf was partially suspended on Saturday 18 November until and including Monday 20 November at the earliest This was announced by Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB) on Friday buses will run from the Oberdollendorf stop instead of trams; these will run to the Bad Honnef terminus and back the step has been taken as a precautionary measure for the safety of passengers and transport operations The stops for the rail replacement service are located five to ten minutes' walk from the railway stations and can be viewed here If the river level allows it again from Tuesday the trains will run the entire route again the riverside promenade near the Königswinter/Mehlem ferry is already submerged The ferry operator was forced to raise the safety ropes of the ferry landing stage early on Friday afternoon Bonn's public order office and the city's civil engineering department have cordoned off the footpath and cycle path in the area of the landing stage as it is blocked by the ropes high water mark I is reached at six metres But we won't reach a really critical level of over seven or even up to eight metres," said weather expert Karten Brandt Major flood damage is only to be expected above the 7-metre mark High water mark II is only reached above eight metres. At this point, shipping traffic will be suspended. However, there are already minor restrictions from six metres upwards: Ships are only allowed to proceed slowly and in the centre of the river. An overview of all the effects of the water levels on the Rhine in Bonn can be found here. a water level of around 6.50 metres occurs on average every three to four years in Bonn " It's nothing out of the ordinary," says the operator of the internet portal "Donnerwetter" Nevertheless: "We'll have to see how it develops next week." The reason for rising water levels of the Rhine is the ongoing rainy weather especially in southern Germany," says Brandt the current weather is good for the natural environment - even if many people are unhappy about it The meteorologist believes that the intervals between the downpours are certainly positive as they are one reason why the water level will not rise above seven metres Two factors in particular are relevant for this to happen in Bonn: The water levels of the Moselle and the Upper Rhine "There will be a lot of water coming from the Upper Rhine in the next few days more water has to come from the Moselle," explains Brandt The water level there is currently stagnating: "The water level in Trier was already falling on Friday" The probability that the water level will rise so high that shipping has to stop is therefore less than one per cent Brandt expects the water level of the Rhine to remain at around six metres or slightly above for a longer period of time in the coming week "This is a prolonged spell that will last for days or weeks because we won't have a big surge coming through as we would during a major flood." There could still be slight restrictions for shipping Ferry operators are already noticing more and more flotsam "It's very dangerous for the propellers and engines on our ships at the moment," says Jacek Spalek The wood debris is mainly coming from the Sieg and can cause expensive damage to the ships Everything goes a little slower," says Spalek This also has a slight impact on the customers: The crossing may well take a little longer you might be a bit late for work," says the operator But this is still possible due to the powerful spotlights on the ship "More driftwood is normal when the water level is high," says meteorologist Brandt During the heavy rainfall in the Black Forest over the past few days trees have certainly fallen over and are now floating in the Rhine text: Marie Schneider and Johanna Lübke / Translation: Jean Lennox) Anita Olsem had planned to visit a friend in Bad Honnef The vehicle she intended to use to get there is a white caravan (Knaus) with the Luxembourgish number plate AN0220 Those who may have pertinent information regarding her whereabouts are asked to contact the Museldall Police Department by calling (+352) 24470 1000 Eine Story von Seminaris Hotel- und Kongressstätten-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH Melden Sie sich an und bleiben Sie informiert.
