GM Robert Huebner, the best German chess player since Emanuel Lasker
has died at the age of 76 after a long illness.
it won't come as a surprise that this quote is from him
As one of the smartest intellectuals among all the chess grandmasters that ever lived
Huebner knew better than anyone about the endless depths of our beloved game
He was famous for his meticulous and profound analysis
showcased for example in his Twenty-five Annotated Games published in 1996
a book that stretched a stunning 400 pages
His motto as it came to working on chess—in mostly a pre-engine era—seemed to be that chess
in what would officially become West Germany half a year later
He learned to play chess at the age of five from his father
In 1957, Huebner joined the railway chess club Turm Koln and soon started representing it in team competitions. In 1963, he became German youth champion in Bad Schwalbach, winning with a four-point lead. The following year, he tied for first place with GM Hans Ree in the Niemeyer tournament for European players under 20 in Groningen
Then, at the World Junior Championship in Barcelona in 1965, Huebner tied for fifth to seventh places. Two years later, in the same event but then in Jerusalem, he finished fourth behind IM Julio Kaplan and GMs Raymond Keene and Jan Timman
His international breakthrough came at the Interzonal Tournament in Palma de Mallorca in 1970, the tournament that was famously won by future world champion GM Bobby Fischer
He became Germany's youngest grandmaster in 1971
He faced former world champion GM Tigran Petrosian in the quarterfinals of the Candidates Matches in Seville
he blundered a piece in a drawn position in the seventh game and then abandoned the match
disturbed by the noise in the tournament hall
He did beat Petrosian at the Chess Olympiad in Skopje in 1972
where Huebner won the gold medal for Germany's board one with an undefeated score that year: +12 =6 -0
Eventually he would represent Germany 11 times between 1968 and 2000 and score 80.5 points over 122 games
He had been leading the match by one point after six but dramatically lost the seventh by blundering a knight fork
and the last two (adjourned) games remained unfinished but were awarded to Korchnoi
Huebner was also involved in what is arguably the strangest finish to a Candidates Match in chess history. As a finalist of the previous cycle, he qualified for the third time and was paired with former world champion GM Vasily Smyslov in the quarterfinals
the score was 5-5 and a playoff saw four draws
this match was decided by fate at the roulette table in a local casino
Smyslov was the lucky one whereas Huebner was eliminated
A further twist is that the ball first ended on zero before it hit a red number
Huebner qualified once more to the Candidates but lost his first-round match in 1991 to Timman
The Dutch grandmaster provided a brief statement to Chess.com about the tragic news: "Really sad news
Robert and I were good friends for many years."
quick win against Korchnoi at the 1987 Interpolis tournament in Tilburg:
He had a bad score against GM Garry Kasparov (and that was nothing to be ashamed of)
but in the very last classical game they played
Huebner managed to beat the reigning world champion from an incredibly complicated opening and early middlegame:
Huebner was known for his deep analytical skills and his remarkable contributions to chess literature
he also wrote Fünfundfünfzig feiste Fehler ("55 Fat Blunders") in 1990 featuring only losses by him
There was also Materialien zu Fischers Partien ("Material Related to Fischer's Games") from 2004
where he deeply annotated all of Fischer's encounters from My 60 Memorable Games
and Der Weltmeisterschaftskampf Lasker-Steinitz 1894 ("The World Championship Match Lasker-Steinitz 1894") in 2008
Huebner also had a keen interest in Chinese chess (xiangqi) and played it competitively
obtaining his doctorate from the University of Cologne in 1976
He specialized in the study of ancient manuscripts
He was a linguistic genius, as attested by the following anecdote that Hartmut Metz wrote in an article on the occasion of Huebner's 75th birthday:
Huebner is said to speak 22 languages. His genius in this regard is underlined by an anecdote: he once played a game against GM Heikki Westerinen
Huebner was unable to communicate with the Finnish grandmaster because
So Huebner went home and learned Finnish so that he could talk to Westerinen after the next game
It should be noted that Huebner self-published a German edition of satires by the Finnish author Vaino Nuorteva in 1993
which makes the above story more likely to be true
From the same interview:Q: You have always made very deep analyses of your games
Weren't you too merciless on yourself?A: I don't think it was a matter of mercy or lack of mercy
& by doing so I have seen that I do not understand too much about chess
he held the opinion that every player had a right to his game
and that a game could therefore not be published without the player's consent
Like others who tried to uphold the claim of copyright over chess games
Huebner was not successful in the court of law
When doping controls were introduced in international chess after the 2000 Chess Olympiad
Huebner announced his withdrawal from the German national team
He saw the controls as a "measure of bureaucratic power" that represented a "degradation
incapacitation and disenfranchisement of the individual."
One of the last tournaments Huebner played in was a four-player rapid tournament in Leiden in early March 2020, just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the Netherlands. He was the oldest participant alongside Karpov, Timman, and the tournament winner GM Predrag Nikolic
and Timman gave a public post-mortem on stage
The Huebner variation goes 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e3 c5 5.Bd3 Nc6 6.Nf3 Bxc3+
In 1993, Huebner served as a second to GM Nigel Short in his PCA World Championship match in London against Kasparov
He worked as my main second against Kasparov and organized many things
I had great respect for him as a player and as an analyst
but he was interested in getting to the bottom of things.
Others will speak about his career and his achievement
but I want to share something more personal. We spent hours and hours talking about all sorts of things
Robert was reading The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde out loud
This is a side to Robert that people never saw
He had a biting sense of humor and was very self-deprecating
Not that I knew anything about Inuit grammar
And he had a fantastic collection of chess books
When he analyzed a game of his for Chess Informant
it would lead to a work of several pages full of moves and symbols
nobody reads this,” he replied: “I know nobody reads this
I do it for myself.“ He was doing it for his own understanding
My friend and co-author CM Arne Moll provided a nice anecdote
It was at the Ter Apel tournament in 1997 where all the players stayed in the same hotel
I was analyzing with a player of my level and a patzer
Suddenly Huebner came to sit with him and started giving very constructive commentary
The loser kept saying: "I'm already totally won here," to which Huebner said: "Yes
You can always make it difficult for your opponent
I found that extremely instructive at the time and have always remembered it
I have saved many points in my career by thinking about Huebner
and still every day in blitz and bullet my motto is: "You can always make it difficult for your opponent
We can remember Huebner when we end up in bad positions—so he continues to inspire us to fight harder
Or simply as the world-class player that he certainly was at the peak of his career
We've lost one of those very special characters of the chess world
of stomach cancer in a hospital in Cologne-Dellbruck

but thankfulness for her long and full life
the family announces Donna’s passing peacefully at the Guelph General Hospital on Tuesday
2024 at nearly 86 years of age from a complex of illnesses
dear aunt of Michael Burt (Sherry) of Mississauga
Gail and Lynne Doupe of Stratford and Jan McIntyre (Larry) of Salt Spring Island BC
Cousin to Debi Alleway and Bobby Alleway of Toronto
Donna was daughter of Jack and Ella Burt and grew up with her brother John (May)
in the Pape and Danforth area of Toronto where she loved the colorful community spirit of the people
she was part of the first class of graduates taught entirely at Royal York Collegiate
There she edited the yearbook and won a Ford Scholarship to the University of Toronto to study Modern Languages in her final year
This was followed by a varied and rewarding career as a teacher
Albert Schweitzer School near Bad Schwalbach
followed by stints at Clarke Road Secondary
followed by 40 wonderful years in the stone farmhouse in Ariss
Donna was a founding member of The Elora Co-operative Preschool
a volunteer role she carried with her to Ariss
While living on “the farm” she volunteered at Guelph General
and was a Homewood Library volunteer for nearly twenty years
Donna possessed a great but quiet sense of duty and loyalty to family
She was happiest enjoying a quiet evening in the living room on the farm enjoying the aroma of the open woodstove with a good book
She also enjoyed our many trips to England
But her happiest moments were with Jonathan
telling stories of his “adventures” of the day with great humour at the supper table
One of her proudest memories was witnessing him getting his doctorate at her old school
Special thanks to all for the medical care she received during her final illness at Guelph General and St Joseph’s
Particular thanks to her endocrinologist Dr
Cameron Purdon for his exceptional care for many years
Donna was a modest person who could sense affectation and phoniness in others easily
She allowed Roy to engage in all his pursuits without complaint
She was the heart of our family and is irreplaceable
Donna’s memory will be honoured at a private family gathering
or perhaps enjoy a glass of unoaked French Chardonnay
Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com
Parkinson Canada or a charity of your own choosing can be made in Donna’s memory
A tree will be planted in memory of Donna E
Doupe in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest
together with his friend and collaborator Miguel Beato
In 1975 he returned to Germany and led a working group at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin until 1980
when he was appointed head of the Division of “Molecular Biology of the Cell I” at the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum
where he stayed until his definitive retirement in 2015
Since 2008 he had been appointed as Helmholtz Professor
In 1988 he received the most prestigious research award in Germany
with his creative mind and impressive working capacity
contributed more than 450 scientific publications over his entire career
Throughout his life he was interested in understanding how steroid hormones could regulate gene activity
This idea drove his research towards understanding the genes encoding the nuclear receptors
to which steroid hormones bind to transduce their effect into the nucleus of the cell
As many as 134 publication can be found from Günther on nuclear receptors
Günther Schütz was among the first to recognize the value of genetically-modified mouse models to study gene expression (in particular that of nuclear receptors responding to steroid hormones)
his lab was among the pioneers in Europe to produce transgenic and mutant mice
and also a constant source of mouse-related technologies that were later universally adopted
Numerous knockout (KO) mouse models with inactivated glucocorticoid or mineralocorticoid receptors were originated in his lab and have been distributed all over the world
or sophisticated tissue-specific and/or inducible KOs
where he could gather more information on the role of these nuclear receptors in cell differentiation
eventually how sexual hormones influence brain functioning
In his laboratory all postdoctoral researchers we had the freedom to explore side scientific projects, on the top of the activities that we had been assigned to develop. This open mind attitude was a constant through his life. He said: “Our research continues to be very exciting
because it often happens that we come across new
unexpected results.” I remember when I joined his lab and we had the first meeting in his office
After briefly discussing the projects that I would be working on
with the talent to impact on people’s careers
I landed in Heidelberg as a plant molecular biologist and returned to Spain five years later as a mouse geneticist
several former collaborators from his lab we organized a ZOOM virtual meeting to remember him and share our memories
Over 30 people showed up at this spontaneous gathering
we quickly managed to get over 70 addresses
and I am sure we are still missing many more
It is impressive to see how many generations of researchers we have been in Günther Schütz’s lab over his 40 years of research as group leader (1975-2015)
and how the large majority of us remained in science and succeeded establishing as leading independent labs
We all recognized his influence in our careers
and how he transmitted his enthusiasm (and hard work) for science
Note: Lluis Montoliu (CNB-CSIC and CIBERER-ISCIII
Spain) was a postdoctoral researcher in Günther Schütz’s laboratory at DKFZ in Heidelberg between 1991 and 1995

Opponents of the Wiesbaden light rail project in a queue of traffic alongside a bus lane
GERMANY: Development of the Citybahn proposal for a light rail line linking Mainz
Taunusstein and Bad Schwalbach has been stopped
after a referendum in Wiesbaden on November 1 saw 62·1% of voters oppose the project on a 46·2% turnout
The proposed metre-gauge line would have been around 35 km long
connecting the Aartalbahn rail corridor with the existing Mainz tram network
Opponents said the estimated €426m cost was too high and the line would have taken up road space
There were also claims – disputed by the proponents – that many trees would need to be removed
The local transport authorities who promoted the project will now consider a bus rapid transit scheme instead
but pointed out that this would take up more street space and require the construction of large concrete tracks
There would also be less non-local funding available for a bus project
‘The citizens of the city did not recognise the opportunity of the century’
Managing Director of promoter CityBahn GmbH
‘The CityBahn project did not deserve this result’
head of Transport for the Rheingau-Taunus district
‘It is a shame that many Wiesbaden residents have been guided by false claims’
Although the result had been particularly disappointing for the Rheingau-Taunus area
he emphasised that ‘we will not let ourselves get down and will continue to fight for local rail transport.’
GERMANY: The further development of plans for a 15 km two-line light rail network in Regensburg was rejected by 53·6% of voters in a referendum held alongside the European Parliament election on June 9
The city council now plans to wind up the Stadtbahn Regensburg committee
GERMANY: Kiel city council has voted by a large majority to develop a 36 km tram network across the northern port city by 2034
The network would have four routes overlapping with each other in the city centre
GERMANY: The first three of 56 Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses that Daimler Buses is supplying to Wiesbaden transport operator ESWE Verkehr were handed over on November 18
Seven more are scheduled to be delivered from Daimler’s Mannheim factory by the end of December

When the new RMV timetable comes into force on 15 December
especially on the route to and from the airport
Because that's when the new Gateway Gardens S-Bahn station will be included in the route
and after less than four years of construction
"The commissioning of the Gateway Gardens S-Bahn station is part of the largest infrastructure expansion in the RMV network for decades
The new station will enable passengers to travel to the metropolises of Frankfurt
Offenbach and Wiesbaden every 15 minutes and without having to change trains," said RMV Managing Director Prof
"With only five years from the award of the financing to completion
Gateway Gardens is the first construction project that I have accompanied in my professional life from the ground-breaking ceremony to the commissioning
The station is a prime example of rapid planning and construction and a model for all other major projects."
The connection of Gateway Gardens to the S-Bahn network is particularly advantageous for the approximately 19,000 employees in the district: the travel time by public transport from Frankfurt's main station is reduced to 10 minutes and the previously necessary change of trains is no longer necessary
For passengers in or from the direction of Wiesbaden
the journey time and about 5 minutes longer
15-minute cycle in the S-Bahn network is further expanded
is not the only change in the new timetable
After the S-Bahn frequency has already been steadily expanded in recent years
S-Bahn lines that run through the Frankfurt Citytunnel are now generally every 15 minutes from 6 a.m
the S6 now also runs at continuous hourly intervals on party nights from Friday to Saturday
Saturday to Sunday and before public holidays
Every 30 minutes between the Rhine-Main and Rhine-Neckar metropolitan regions
.The RegionalExpress line RE60 runs on the highly demanded axis between Frankfurt
on weekends at hourly intervals between the Rhine-Main and Rhine-Neckar metropolitan regions
With now 15 connections per weekday and 14 connections on weekends
this is almost double the previous number of trips on the RE60 between Darmstadt and Mannheim
Together with the hourly regional trains RB67/68
this results in an approximate half-hourly service between numerous cities
RheingauExpress: at hourly intervals from Eltville to Frankfurt
Through the cooperation of the transport companies VIAS and HLB
additional express connections of the RE9 will be possible
which was newly established in December 2018
will be supplemented by five additional trips in each direction at hourly intervals
The advantage for Rheingau commuters: the RE9 runs from Eltville to Frankfurt without stopping at Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof
This results in a travel time saving of 10 minutes compared to the Rheingau line RB10
the range of services will also be expanded so that all trips of the RheingauExpress' will have connections in Niederwalluf to and from Bad Schwalbach
Also on the bus line 171 there are new connections in Eltville to Geisenheim in the afternoon
But the RB10 also runs more frequently: there are additional trips in the morning and afternoon between Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof and Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof
as well as an additional late-night trip between Frankfurt and the Rheingau in each direction on party nights
Many timetable extensions in the entire RMV area
individual additional trips will be offered on numerous lines
